Major flooding causing a state of emergency in Alaska

those incredible images from Alaska at least two homes crashing into flood waters sparked by rapidly melting glaciers several other homes are now at serious risk here's ABC's zarine Shaw oh there it goes there goes tonight the dramatic moment a massive house collapses into this River in Alaska we're just watching the the banks are slowly erode then all of a sudden the whole roof and everything just came down watch as the Raging Rapids of the Mendenhall River erode the banks in Juneau triggering the destruction this giant tree toppling into the Rushing Water before being swept Downstream officials tonight issuing an emergency declaration blaming the flooding on the rapid melting of the Mendenhall Glacier experts say Alaska is warming at twice the rate compared to the rest of the country that warming contributing to this unprecedented flooding event this is a one percent to a point two percent chance of this type of flood taking place at any given time so this is a very rare event the Mendenhall Glacier considered the Region's Crown Jewel drawing thousands of tourists each year but right now officials say the banks of the Mendenhall River remain highly unstable tonight and they are urging people to stay away Lindsay we understand why zorin thank you hi everyone George Stephanopoulos here thanks for checking out the ABC News YouTube channel if you'd like to get more videos show highlights and watch live event coverage click on the right over here to subscribe to our Channel and don't forget to download the ABC News app for breaking news alerts thanks for watching
