hi friends traci here from the sewing channel welcome back and if you're new here welcome last year i shared a tutorial with you on how to make a drawstring gift bag for a gift card it was a magic drawstring gift card bag this year i'm going to share with you the measurements and how i made this darling scrappy christmas magic drawstring gift bag if you're a beginner i'll take you step by step now if you're a more advanced sewer skip to the middle of this video where i get right to the point on how i construct the magic in this bag right here let me know down in the comments if you've ever made a reusable gift bag before enough talking already let's get busy making some magic in this gift bag you can use a jelly roll that you already have on hand or you can take all of your scraps like i did and just cut two and a half inch wide strips in just an array of different fabrics this ruler right here comes in really handy and it's a two and a half inch wide ruler it's 18 inches in length i cut them in six inch lengths so that way it could truly be a really scrappy look you'll also need to cut these end pieces so that way we can position them when we sew our rows together this seam right here will be in the middle of this block right here and these are two and a half inch in width and they're three inches long you'll need six of these end pieces at two and a half by three you'll need 39 strips that are two and a half by six if you want to make it just like mine i just laid out my six inch strips in the order kind of how i want to see them place them however you would like i don't want to do a lining on this bag you can totally do a lining and use some fleece or some batting within the project like what i did in this poinsettia block and it looks really cute and you can do that too but today i'm just going to show you a simple magic drawstring scrappy inside out gift bag wrong sides together on these strips and you might remember this from my inside out jelly roll strip quilt that was really fun you can catch the link in the top right hand corner here well i'm going to be sewing these wrong side together so i have exposed seams and i'll do that not only when i connect them here but also as i go down the rows so that way on the inside it'll be all nice and clean and i will not have to have a lining in this bag and you know i always say the party's always on the outside so no worries about the inside on this one let's take this over to the sewing machine and we'll start to connect our rows wrong sides together [Music] i'm just going to kind of finger press them here open at the sewing machine as i go here are the strips what they look like after i've sewn them wrong sides together after you've sewn all of your pieces in your rows you are going to open up these and we're going to press them do this to all of your seams before you connect the rows together and after you sew each row together you're also going to press this seam the long one right across here open after you have all of your rows sewn together just like this and you've opened up all the seams and pressed them all real nice and you press the back so everything lays nice and flat we're going to put a wide zigzag stitch all the way down each of these seams go down here and back and forth we're going to have that wide enough so that it lays that seam allowance down i'm going to try a 6.0 millimeter in width stitch i'm going to back stitch and i think that's the size i want to go with what i want you to take note here is that notch that's in the middle of my sewing foot right there that's actually my guide to follow along the middle of this seam right here so that notch is going right along there and and that ensures that i'll have an even zigzag stitch all the way down [Music] so i hope you can see that zigzag stitch all along there nothing fancy it's just going to hold these pieces back for us so that way that part right there the very edge will shred and fray so continue doing your zigzag stitch down all of the other rows once you get your zigzag stitch on there go ahead and fold it right in half now what we're going to do is just square this off and make this side straight i should have probably cut these at three and a quarter inches so hopefully you guys catch that in the beginning i'll go ahead and make a note of it in the description box as well with all of the measurements for today's project what i do is just find the shortest one along here and just line it up i line this area up make sure this side's nice and straight so i'm going to turn this around here so you can see that this is the top and this is the bottom for the top ruffle of our bag you're going to need 36 inches in length of a coordinating fabric just one solid piece of fabric and the width is going to be seven and a half inches wide so 36 inches long seven and a half wide and you'll need to fold it in half with wrong sides together and give it a nice press so that you get a nice crease in there this piece and yet again a different pattern or fabric in coordinating you know christmas if it's christmas will be 33 inches in length and two and a half inches wide so 33 inches long two and a half inches wide and then what i want you to do is fold this one in half give that a press open up your ends and i want you to fold once fold twice about a quarter to a half an inch there folded give that a press close it back up and press it down again making sure that that's creased nicely there and you'll want to do the same thing on this side fold in once fold in twice give it a good press fold in half and re-crease that so you have these two sides are nice and creased and the middle is creased now if you didn't make your scrappy like you see i did here what you will need is one piece of fabric in whatever print you choose 32 and a half by 14 and a half and that's what my piece ended up being and again i will list all the measurements in the description box so no worries this is the top of the bag and this is the bottom of the bag i want you to take your seven and a half inch strip and open it up just like that so right side is facing up then i want you to take your sheet of either scrappy fabric or one sheet of fabric i want you to lift it up onto this down for you lift it onto this fabric so the wrong side here is touching the right side and that's open this is open and right side facing up see that crease right there that we made that's facing up and we're just going to center it it's okay that that's left over there on the edge i do that because we're going to square that up in the end and that just allows us to have some wiggle room now you're going to take this piece right here and if you didn't do it already i need you to just put a straight stitch right along there so that tacks that down i almost forgot to give you that step i'm gonna go do that right now and i'll be right back okay so as you can see here that's tacked down all across there just with a regular straight stitch now you're going to take this and you see here it's folded and you want to keep that folded i'm going to line this up somewhere in the center of my sheet of fabric and you should have roughly about you know three quarters of an inch left on the edge there right here right here you should have about three quarters to half an inch left and then this of course is extra right there you're going to just clip all these layers together so you have the two layers from this well let me go ahead and let me show you here you're going to clip all those layers together so this is going to be this sheet is going to be clipped the sheet of scrappy fabric or one piece of fabric and then you'll have actually two layers of this that are getting clipped right now make sure everything is nice and up to the edge so that's nice and clipped now just roll this up just this one piece of fabric this is why they call it the burrito roll-up method make a nice little roll there do not grab this piece right here not yet so you're just going to keep rolling that up to about there now one note i want to tell you about this right here you can make this gift bag any size that you'd like the one thing that you have to take note is this piece right here needs to be wide enough to do the burrito roll up method seven and a half for this size project is perfect now you're going to take this piece right here remember it's already clipped and on this side and you've just rolled this up now we're going to lift this up to meet these right here and if you haven't guessed it already once you pull this up here you're going to pinch with your fingers unclip and then re-clip pinch that together with your fingers unclip re-clip pinch unclip reclip you're going to do that all along here the reason we put so many clips in is because we don't want anything to shift within this seam right here it's really easy to do when you have multiple fabrics all together now everything is clipped nice and secure i'll flip it over and you can see there everything is nicely clipped now it's time to take this over to our sewing machine we're going to sew a quarter inch seam allowance all the way down being sure to grab all of these layers within this burrito all the way down since this is pretty long right here i just drop it right between my legs and send it through the sewing machine and it works out great [Music] so everything is sewn up and you're left with this tube this next step is probably the reason why you even clicked on my video this is where all of the magic happens go to one side it doesn't matter whichever side and flip it open like that and try to find one of the bottom ends there and you're going to tug gently and you're going to pull this right side out you end up with no seams exposed where you connected these pieces next i want to iron this part right here where this meets together this and this we're going to iron that so it's nice and flat and then we have that memory crease already there so that's going to help us as well before we go any farther what i want you to do next is see this flap right here it will lay much better on our drawstring gift bag if we tack this down just doing a simple top stitch all along the edge just until you get to the end of this particular fabric and just back stitch right there so a top stitch all the way down so it doesn't flap up and down so here i've top stitched that entire casing all the way down and i just want to show you here what that looks like now you will have two openings there so to speak but you're only going to weave your twine or your ribbon or your cord whatever you're going to use for your drawstring you're going to put it right in that little slot right there first we need to square these edges up put wrong sides together and even everything up best you can and we know that this is straight because we straightened it earlier so that's a good guide to follow now since this bag is going to be so cute and scrappy and frayed i myself wouldn't mind having the edges out but i'm going to show you how we're going to close everything up just as if we weren't exposing the seams so if you had just one sheet of fabric and whatnot you're going to still use the same method that i'm going to show you right here we are going to use a french seam to close everything up so what you're going to do is start here close this up go down to the corner pivot and go across here and you're going to do an a scant eighth of an inch all the way around so here you can see hopefully i've done a scant eighth inch all the way around a french seam is going to close this up and i don't want any of this peeking out on the inside of this bag so i'm going to cut and trim as close as i can to that seam that i just made just getting rid of this excess bulk next you're going to turn it inside out take whatever pokey tool you have and just poke those corners out really good be careful not to poke through your fabric though so i'm just going to push those corners up there with the french seam you want to make sure that we are hiding those seams in there so we want to take our fingers and just roll that seam to the very edge and i think i'm going to grab a couple clips just to help me keep that edge to the edge see because it has a tendency to tuck back in and we don't want that we're going to just encase that seam that's right there once we close that over we're going to sew that so you can't see it so let's take it to the sewing machine and i'll meet you right back here so you can see here that i have that all encased nicely and now we're going to turn it right side out so you can see here there's that seam enclosed could captioning not available i mean this bag is so darling so far so i've decided that i would like to put this twine that i had in my stash i never use it and i thought that would be perfect for this christmas gift bag so we need to get this twine in there i made this myself it's just a plastic one of those plastic reusable straws i drilled a hole in it and put one of my safety pins right there so i'm just going to open that up i'm going to clip that in i'm just going to tie this so that it stays hopefully in there then i'm going to take this end and remember i'm going to put it right between those two same fabrics i'm not going to go under to the bottom fabric i'm going to go right inside of that little tube we made and it worked it's a nice little tool you probably have one in your kitchen drawer somewhere i know i had several of these oh my word this is so cute oh my word oh my goodness oh my word that this is so darling i can't even stand it i don't think i'm even going to wash this and make it any more afraid i like the look that it is right now [Music] until next time on the sewing channel take care
