foreign football is the home of the Super Bowl and this historic matchup is brought to you by EA Sports It's the Detroit Lions in the Kansas City Chiefs and it's coming up next it's the National Football League presented by EA sports tonight it is all on the line we play for the Lombardi trophy as it'll be the AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs taking out the NFC champions the Detroit Lions alongside Charles Davis I'm Brandon Gordon but Charles we don't like to throw around the word dynasty Loosely but for the Chiefs it applies I mean they're looking for their third title now in five years and with the way this league is configured now it absolutely applies I think you're totally On Target remember they lost a Super Bowl in there too so to be back for the fourth time in five years in today's NFL that's pretty incredible meanwhile for the Lions it might be a state holiday in Michigan tomorrow if they can pull this one off their first ever Super Bowl appearance is they try to win their first NFL title since 1957. I love how you announced I love how you like to govern as well a state holiday absolutely if they pull this one off and remember this team trying to win as you said their first title since 1957. if they pull this off it officially buries the Bobby Lane curse [Applause] thank you [Applause] and off we go from Las Vegas foreign Here Comes Pacheco just shy of the 25 [Applause] set to go LED is always by the Gunslinger a former MVP in this league it's Patrick Mahomes and simply put for many he's a gold standard for quarterbacks in today's NFL create find the open man use all the different arm angles that he has he's a complete package and boy his team loves to play around him right to the air is Mahomes man open that's Marquez Valdez scadley 11 yards there on the first play from scrimmage well this defense certainly knows they're gonna have their hands full trying to slow down this passing game here's an example on the very first play from scrimmage I think we'll see some different looks maybe some pressure from different places but it didn't work there and it's a quick first down throwing on first down is Mahomes Cannon complete and he is going to lose yardage here he was unable to shake free there they'll cover him for a loss of a yard defense you're more balance when you're in zone coverage because you're able to keep your eyes on the quarterback and see the play develop in front of you they're able to keep the Quick Pass in front of them and stop it right at the line of scrimmage on second down here's Mahomes that's complete it's Travis Kelsey and it's going to be another first down as they'll get him to the ground at the Lions 43. 23 yards to pick up there that was good protection there no that was great protection there because it allowed him to lock in on his receiver although I think he was looking for his tight end on the corner out all the way not nice connection there for a really nice gain so the ball moves into lion territory now here's First and Ten at the 43. Mahomes firing complete so give him five yards there on the pitch and catch and that will bring up second down well we know he can run the football too but he's a good pass catcher that's been on display here Charles on this opening drive and we certainly have seen the benefits of what he did in the off season which was spend more time with wide receivers working on routes working on Cuts in order to make himself a more complete running back and even more of a threat downfield foreign again on second down but this time it's incomplete and partner to me that one was all about timing if he's there too early it's going to be a pass interference call if he's too late it's a completed pass he was Johnny on the spot on that one they come up now third and five following the incomplete pass [Applause] the home's gonna throw yeah that would be incomplete even in today's NFL when we think of the tight end position Now is really a glorified wide receiver we're still asking a lot of those guys they have to block as well and every now and then they don't come down with the football so now on comes the field goal unit and wow this is no ordinary try here and he has got it from 55 yards away that was never end down every possession in the postseason magnified and look it's just the opening drive they didn't get the touchdown they wanted but at least they got on the board they got on the board they've got their into it as well and remember the game slows down a little bit so every point is precious thank you after the field goal here's butker to kick it away comes Khalif Raymond from his end zone and that decision to bring it out ends up not being a good one costs him about five yards as he's tackled it to 20. so here are the Lions now coming out for their opening drive they're LED onto the field by the former Cal bear and the number one overall pick in 2016. Jared Goff rumors of golf demise greatly exaggerated it seems boy what a big year he had last year 29 touchdown and led the Lions to their first winning season since 2017. under his leadership the Lions expect to make the playoffs for the first time in a few seasons and he'll get it up near the 35 right at the 34 here first play of the drive going for 14 and a first down when he runs he seems to do a nice job of knowing when to be patient and find the hole and then when the hole is there he goes quickly you're exactly right he knows how to just take off but you know what else brings a little thump with him doesn't he he does he packs the Boom at the end of the run and finishes it going forward that's what you want to see out of your backs first down Lions on a pickup of 13. now a give running right as Montgomery got some space here and he'll go down down 28. good yardage as he rumbles for 24 at a first would you say this offense is locked in right now they're having no trouble on this truck what is a free place three first downs yeah you talked about on the March they keep this up they'll get to that end zone real fast yeah so now First and Ten in Chiefs territory as they've got it to the 28-yard line they'll keep pounding here with Montgomery brought down by Willie gay that's a really nice tough run inside and they gained five yards on it and be frank about it most offenses don't expect to hit five yards on a play call like that so when they do they go back to their huddle with a little pep in their steps they're starting to think that they're starting to dominate the line of scrimmage coming right this is Montgomery on the toss he is taken down at the 21 after a short gain of two today's NFL you hear all the time about stretching the field and creating space in order to run plays a toss play will help accomplish that because now you're pushing a defense to chase you all the way to the edges into the sideline that's a nice run probing now early to try and get things done later here's the 12th overall pick in April's drafts Amir Gibbs and he is going to have a Lions first down as they convert on Third and three with a nice gain of seven yards quite the opening drive March they're on right now it looks a lot like what we saw in practice prior to the game doesn't it you know because on that last big practice beforehand you go through your offensive script you go through your play call and you go through all the stuff and establish things and it looks like it's going like clockwork right now for them and now a throw on first down there but it's incomplete it's pretty early in the game but they've already tried to establish him not just as a runner but as a receiver as well didn't happen there but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them try again shortly so now second and ten after the end completion on first down and effective running here he'll take it down inside the 10. 52 yards rushing for him now on their opening drive in the Super Bowl well this play sequence was really kind of called in Reverse incomplete pass on First and Ten nice run on second and Tim when probably everyone was expecting him to throw the football now if you're the defense on third down you're a little off balance this is cool and the lions are going to have first and goal as they try to finish off this drive with six points and in a lot of ways that catch is inspected Red Zone presence and that one was realized there you've got to find your tight end in that situation all right thank you they'll run with Montgomery it's out it's loose but fortunately he's able to recover his own fumble and that could have been trouble all I can say about this play is that someone's living right I mean he's trying to game yard he's trying to get up field ball comes free what's that Panic that we've talked about oftentimes that you feel when you lose the ball you can sense it oh you can sense it and somehow he got to it it was able to recover for his Squad very fortunate to get another shot here second and goal there's gone and they're gonna get it they bring him down to the shack back in the 16-yard line Michael Dana he's the one that got home and takes him down for a loss of nine second goal last thing you need to do is get pushed backwards to take a sack but he couldn't find anywhere to go with the football had to eat it and ended up on the ground yeah now now on Third and long they'll look to throw and that is incomplete the Kansas City defense tough to throw on there and now it's fourth down while so a drive that spans all that time and yet you may only Come Away with three points here well your defense all right they actually like these long drives they get to rest over on the sidelines for a while but when you're not finishing with points in terms of touchdowns that's frustrating they've got to figure out how to close out these long drives and get sixes instead of threes so matching field goals on our opening two drives yeah it feels like two boxers feeling each other out here in the early going of the game right exchanging some Jabs but none of the heavy stuff just yet yeah each team with a possession each team with a field goal as the kick is away foreign and he'll get it up across the 20 to the 21-yard line and the Chiefs now getting set to go [Applause] they run with a second year man Isaiah Pacheco will pass the 25 to the 26 a gain of five not a huge play but I think they're more than happy with how it turned out don't be surprised to see them revisit that call because there was a lame there for more than just five yards put in your back pocket and break it out when you need it later so from the 26 yard line here's second and five here's Pacheco once again and he'll get a couple up to the 29. [Applause] the dime looked defensively for the Lions on third working from the gun Mahomes and this pass broken up for the contact well of time there and now fourth down nice call by the defense there on third down just flooded the field with extra defensive backs in their dime package nowhere to go with the football forces the incompression on fourth down Tommy Townsend to punt for Kansas City back deep Khalifa Raymond it's taken to the 26. 11 yards and it will be First and Ten as they take over back onto the field come the Lions for their second overall drive and they had a long drive last time but they had to settle for a field goal and I'm sure that's how it felt to them settling they probably should have gotten in the end zone yeah not all now Joy right because that's what you get when you put the ball in the end zone but there are benefits to that type of a long drive your defense gets a chance to take a break adjust a little bit maybe get themselves ready to get back out on the field and play a little bit better so he'll take the benefit even though they wanted the six points maybe wore down the other defense we'll see his first Carry of their second Drive pretty solid and of course remember back in their first drive really strong throughout that one not only is he getting good blocking up front but how about his vision to find the holes and he's seeing things before they even open and hurdle and Throne so eight yards on the completion there and that'll bring up a second down in just a couple nothing flashy there the slant to the slide oh and the frustration for the defensive guys because it's a quick play and you know it's going to be a bang bang play in terms of the throw in the catch and he's able to absorb the contact and complete it they'll fake the give now golf and same brown gonna have the Lions first down as he'll be brought down at the 37. back-to-back receptions for him and it's another first down we've seen quite a bit of the short passing game here early on first quarter haven't we we have and I think it works a couple of ways for for this team because number one you throw the short game until they stop it if they're not going to stop you keep throwing in occasionally you'll break a tackle and turn into a bigger game also if they start to creep up start to pressure receivers now you go over to the top take it deep and I get some of those big shots downfield officially no gain on the play and it's second down he's already fumbled once in this game and I thought the ball started to jostle there a little bit but they got to him quickly at the line of scrimmage it sure did and remember if you're not a very competent Runner and you've he dropped it one once if there's traffic around you the only thing you think about is protecting the football not gaining yards and a second down pass play there but it's incomplete one thing you hope to see out of a rookie tight end is a real concentration when the ball's in the air and I'm not sure that he didn't but he has to be prepared for people making a play on it when that Ball's up for grabs an incomplete pass on second now that muddles things a little bit here this is third and ten setting up the screen this is Gibbs and he'll be marked down at about the 26-yard line 11 yards there and a line first down Russian defensive coordinator get upset and throw his headset this is the guy to play that'll do it you force third and law this is almost sort of a give up play you're just hoping to get something positive and it winds up breaking big and they convert on third down they had to settle for three last Drive hoping this second go around ends in six in good position First and Ten man oh man open here is Jones 25 yards that time not quite enough to get into the end zone but what a nice play there he makes the catch tries to turn up field and get to the byline but doesn't quite get there but they're going to be set up with a first and goal from very short range they'll run with Gibbs it's nice right one is touchdown Jamir Gibbs taking it in from a yardout and the Lions have taken the lead sometimes offense if you get too cute down near the goal line but there's nothing fancy about this one as coach Lombardi would say we get a seal here and we get a seal here and we rub this play in the alley and that's good work to hit the whole hard and finish in the end zone an extra point by Patterson up and good and the lead is now 10-3 here are the Lions now as they line up and kick this one away foreign and he's up past the 20 to the 22-yard line now the Chiefs offensive unit ready to do battle again they trailed early on in his Super Bowl as they come up First and Ten swing this out to tactic officials here gonna pause the game for a second looks like there's an injured chief on the field we'll take a break and get a report from Vegas after this [Applause] from the 34 now here's First and Ten from the gun it's Mahomes a dump down to McKinnon and he'll be out of bounds after getting this one across the 40. so the completion results there in nine yards and they'll have a second and one fourth coming so Patrick Mahomes as he's playing at such an elite level defensively coming into a game like this Charles what there's got to be a lot of things but what worries you the most I think you're exactly right about that the list is extensive about what worries you the way you can move make completions on the run the way you can throw against his body you name it he gets it done the biggest thing though is once he gets into Rhythm trying to get his timing chipped away trying to stop that that is really difficult to do second and short that's a rundown so it's definitely a good time to go play action if you're feeling it and they do so and pick up a first down [Applause] so the ball moves into lion territory now here's First and Ten down at the 31. and again it's Mahomes this one is caught it's more that's back-to-back plays of over 20 yards that brings us to the end of one in Super Bowl 58 much more to come from Las Vegas after this 10-3 the score you're watching the NFL on e a sports two big plays in succession not sure this D knows what hit him but now they got to get ready it's first and goal this one to the right caught by Valdez scantlick that's good for a gain of six seconded goal come on here's Pacheco and and from time to look up before he was planted in the backfield that's a big loss of three and it brings up third down that's a tough one right there he ran right into the teeth to the blitz as the linebacker was freed up in order to stop that one for a loss and quarterback's got to see that gotta find a way to audible into something a little more advantageous yeah here's Mahomes third and goal that's caught it's Kelsey touchdown Kansas City four yards on the touchdown ground and the Chiefs are an extra point away from tying up this Super Bowl no surprise there third and goal down here that's where they're going to look for their tight end yeah you want that big guy running his routes because it doesn't matter who they cover him with it's another big guy he might use against him if it's a shorter Defender might go over the top either way you tend to find a little bit of a mismatch in that area an extra point by bunker Is On Target and we are even at 10 a piece [Applause] all level now at 10 a piece as the kicks away thank you no run back here for Raymond this will be a Touchback now the Lions offense they get ready to head back out there this drive here beginning probably with a pair of motivated groups remember the offense scored a touchdown another last time out looking to repeat that and Charles's defense they were very frustrated after giving up six the last time on the field and Franklin is just a battle of wills in a lot of ways because you know game plan for this drive and they both have specific outcomes in mind to me it just comes down to who can execute better and which side can step up and assert its will over the other an incomplete pass leads to Second and ten from the 25. they'll try the Middle with Montgomery bended at the 33 following a good pickup of eight that was a good run and it got to the second level and what I mean by that is that's where the linebackers usually play first level being the defensive front last level being the secondary but the strong safety position ended up making the tackle and oftentimes we call them a hybrid combination defensive back combination linebacker we saw the linebacker make the stop and he is going to have a Lions first down as they're able to get the third down conversion did you see that route the way that I did I thought he was trying to get dead that wasn't the first option no no it came off of that guy the Deep guy and came underneath on the drag completed it very well he'll find his rookie tied in Sam laporta and they'll get to him after a gain of seven to the 47. not a big window to throw coverage wasn't too bad there yeah they had him under wraps pretty well but somehow able to muscle his way open and catch the ball [Applause] on the 47-yard line here's second and three golf now to throw looking middle and it's incomplete those are the ones you dream of his Defenders I think if he gets eyes on the ball a little bit earlier he might come away with it instead it's going to wind up as just an incomplete pass the offense on third down tonight they've been near perfect four for five to this point this time it's third and three throwing again is gone looking left side and he's got a man that's Jones and he is going to have a Lions first down as they're able to get the third down conversion hello football 101 there you just see the receiver try to run down the defender meaning he goes right at him and really trying to move him a little bit towards the center of the field so he can put his foot in the ground and break to the out to the sideline and make a catch off play action here's golf he's going to get this one out to his fullback and he'll be brought down losing yardage back at the 40. that one unable to develop never got going a loss of a couple and it's second down yes it to me pass catching fullbacks nowadays partner in fact you'll see too many full-backs period good news though he does have decent hands and we saw it right there on display golf now looking to throw that's going to be caught by Josh Reynolds it's a pickup of 12 and that'll set up a third down fired that one in there it will make connection on a nice end route with those faster passes and they're going that fast any hesitation as a quarterback that the deflection if you miss might be bigger and leave you an interception yeah and the deflection works both ways maybe a Defender gets a hand in the way and it pops in the air and sometimes you throw it so hard your receiver can't handle it and he pops it up in the air for the Defenders to grab as well but a moot point there is they were able to connect they only get two there but on Third and one that's all they needed to keep the drive alive Brandon what were they thinking on defense there that looked like they were planned for the pass that was third and short yeah it was an easy pickup because they handed it to him that was way too easy just looked like absolute confusion defensively not sure why they were in that set yeah I'd say you should ought to have a few men in the box there while golf throw a complete there to Saint Brown and out of bounds right around the 20. let's make this one simple what a catch especially the finishing part of getting his feet in bounds toe tapping and of course foot dragging little tapestry if you will oh I like it it's golf off the bootleg he'll go right back to Saint Brown's touchdown Jared gone to almond rossane Brown and the Lions have broken our tie as they take the lead partner remember that old film of Peyton Manning going through the route tree with his great receivers in Indianapolis I think we're seeing the results of the same type of work here today these guys know each other so well they don't even have to call the play they can just look each other and know the route that's going to be run and usually the connection is perfect extra point by Patterson up and good and that makes it a 17-10 score [Music] here are the Lions now as they line up and kick this one away from a couple yards deep he'll bring it out of the end zone and he's able to get this across the 20 but not by much as he's marked out officially at the 21. Patrick Mahomes on his way out for their next Drive last series the ball never hit the ground 6-6 touchdown pass so whatever he did then do it again right yeah it reminds me a lot of when I watch the best quarterbacks throw seven on seven or even routes versus Air they're accurate the ball never touches the ground what if you want to take it to basketball a well-executed fast break right pass pass pass finish at The Rim basket yeah ball never hits the ground there either foreign [Applause] ergized this offense a little bit they've been kind of sluggish until then but they're showing signs of life here and they get good yardage that time in a first down so here's a First and Ten at the 38. here's Mahomes to throw short throw hauled in by Kelsey now that's staying ahead of the chains really good pickup on first down hitting the tight end there now brings up a second and manageable just found a hole in that zone [Applause] [Music] from the 44-yard line here's a second and four Mahomes to throw once more throw here's incomplete and I think he was a little surprised to see the ball sitting out there like that that's a ball he had a chance to come away with but it winds up an incomplete pass now they face a third down and four after that incompletion on second down Mahomes now the throw [Applause] and complete and boy he is very close to a first down but from where they're spotting that football he's going to be a foot or so short at this for baseball we call this small ball instead of pushing it down field they throw a short pass trying to pick up the first down but the defense rallies to the football and stops in short bringing up a fourth down the kicks away as he angles this one for the sideline no returning this one it sails out of bounds and they'll spot it right at the 20. we have time for another look at this Lions offense and they have to be pleased with the way that they move the football thus far and why wouldn't they be two touchdowns on a field goal in their first three possessions they're playing so well right now the field goal probably feels like a disappointment here's a fake on the Jet Sweep and instead of give up the middle and he stopped right at the 25 after a gain of five Brandon five yards on that run let's get back to the Hubble and make sure you're back you spend time with your offensive line and give them credit hard to move those 300 plus Pounders at the line of scrimmage and they did for a significant chunk of yardage foreign [Applause] this time 98 yards for him on the ground so far tonight as he has been terrific in his first half they went with the nickel look defensively so they had five defensive backs in there didn't help him stop the run yeah I love that vehicle look five cents five DBS but what also happens then you take a big body off the field in order to insert that guy to take a big off for a little and oftentimes you can run the football effectively against that defense odd First and Ten here's Gibbs and some solid footwork there as he'll take this down to about the 38th 15 more there and they're on a roll that's another first down we both know it's difficult but they've made it look effortless out there through the air on the ground they've moved the ball with relative ease so now First and Ten in Chiefs territory at the 38. Montgomery on the counter and he'll be brought down losing yardage back at the 40. two yards the loss second and 12. they have three tight ends in that formation that's almost a universal sign that they're planning to run the football but how about the defense there they met force with force and caused a stack up behind the line of scrimmage and threw him for a loss in motion the tight end to Montgomery on second down and they went the wrong way there losing yardage back at the 43-yard line it'll be a loss of a full three yards there and it also brings up third down but with the kind of half he's had I think we could forgive him that run right not every Run's going to be a big play isn't it no and also the blocking just wasn't there no room to run yeah defensively they gotta find a way to build on that because he's eating them alive in the first half [Applause] down there but he cannot connect the frustration evident there because he couldn't find anyone on third down and he left no doubt that he was throwing that one away Jack fox out to punt here on fourth down waiting on it will be Richie James they did he put that on a dime he did WOW Out of Bounds at the one-yard line well on that pun we've got a man shaking up we'll take a break and get a report from Vegas after this foreign the Chiefs offense about set to begin this drive and a bit of a Dawning task here for this offense as they'll start out at the one yard line I guess you could easily say there's a whole lot of real estate in front of them if they want to achieve their goal which is get to the other end zone yeah 99 yards to go if they want to do just that well no matter how they phrase it staying on schedule staying ahead of the sticks whatever you want to call it seven yards on first down that fits the bill a good run got seven on first here's second and three on play action it's Mahomes open on the left side this is 11 yards for number 11. this has to go down as one of the simple routes in the Playbook but oh so effective nice completion there keeps the sticks moving all right [Applause] foreign on first down is Mahomes he's got a man on the Crossing Round that's more and they're going to get this beyond the 40 before he's taken down 23 yards the final tally the goal for any offense versus his own defense find the holes where guys are available and put the ball on the receiver before any Defender can step up and fill it they did it well there perfectly executed Crossing round two minutes on the clock in the second quarter of this Super Bowl [Applause] a reminder as we did all through the regular season we'll check in with Jonathan Coachman at halftime he'll have highlights and Analysis of this first half completely and he goes out of bounds it looks like right at the 50. [Applause] second and two from Midfield here's Mahomes he'll check this one down to Pacheco and he'll go down inside the 45 before going out of bounds seven yards there and a first down and a nice gain and a broken tackle along the really we shouldn't be surprised shouldn't we that's what Runners do especially the best ones they break tackles and gain extra yardage [Applause] now it's Mahomes again pitch and catch here to Travis Kelsey yeah this will leave him a yard short nice pickup of nine yards on first down and he's the epitome of what we call the move tight end a guy that you can line up anywhere in the slot out wide in tight doesn't really matter because he has such great skills you want to utilize him in all aspects of your passing offense and there he was in the slot for the catch that was right here to his running back four yards the pickup first down another catch for him there on this drive Brandon it looks like they're going to utilize him out of the backfield any way they can and that time they pick up a first down so now on defense do you assign a man to him and try and cover him before he gets going creeping up on a minute to play in this first half thank you and he's gonna go down they get to and back at the 40. that's that courtesy of Jack Campbell now that was a pastor's nightmare the front door totally shut down by the defense so he kept going backwards hoping to find another Avenue of Escape it didn't exist [Applause] well they're in some hot water now after that sack it's second and 21. they'll set up the screen to Pacheco the Chiefs now going to use the first of their timeouts as they'll stop the clock with 24 seconds to go in this first half not an easy spot here and they'll be in search of 13 yards to try to pick up the first now on Third and long they'll look to throw he's got his man Valdez scantley and they are going to have a first down and Aaron field goal range as well it's a down inside the 20. operating from the red zone now Mahomes [Applause] down Travis Kelsey his second touchdown of this Super Bowl and the Chiefs go 98 yards and finish it off in the end zone I don't think it's any state secret to know what they were saying before the start of this drive let's go and punch one in the end zone and go into the halftime feeling a heck of a lot better about ourselves let's go get this done yeah tight and now of course all scoring plays are reviewed and I think they're going to take an extra long look at this one they're taking a peek at whether or not those feet were in bounds and obviously a big call here in the end zone and not just the feet how about the hands how's the ball possessed while the feet are hopefully getting down in bounds that's what they're trying to look at to see if it all comes together so they called it a touchdown originally and this will stay a touchdown after the video review so they had it right extra point by bunker Is On Target and that is going to tie our game as we approach halftime so not much time to speak of remaining in this first half as the kicks away and able to get this out to Detroit the Lions offense ready to kick off their next drive and with 10 seconds left not really enough time to put something together the run there on first down gonna get him five up to the 30. now with timeout taken perhaps a chance for one more quick play and then Khalifa Raymond to return and he'll get it up past the 20 to about the 22. the Lions offense now with a football first here to begin Corner number three and through one half at least his Super Bowl has been everything it was cracked up to be all tied what's your key for them Charles in the second half Simplicity partner because in the Super Bowl with the extra time at halftime I think some stats get caught up in trying to design too many things it's all tied up they have to remember what they did to get here put that back into play here in the second half and I think they'll be all right from the 29 here's second down and three foreign they'll get three as the drive continues it's a first down it's no accident they've been moving the ball well all game long this offensive line has done an excellent job adapting to everything the defense is throwing at him and creating holes for their Runners so they'll come up first in 10 now from the 33. back to the ground this time Montgomery and he'll be brought down just shy of Midfield at the 49-yard line 114 yards rushing forward now as he's carried it 16 times he had a really solid first half running the football and picking up where he left off here in the third quarter how about the yardage he's piling up right now this feels like a full game not just the series that we're watching right now I know people are screaming what are the adjustments from halftime on the defensive side of the ball sometimes they're just not there sometimes you just got to find a way to tackle someone just a yard on the pickup there and it'll bring up a second and nine yeah things were pretty stacked up there in the middle of the lot a lot of bodies not much space I think ultimately he was fortunate to get anything out of that run ball right on the 50-yard line here's the second and nine no ground with Montgomery they'll get a dozen there and the Lions have a first down we don't talk about it very often but sometimes just a dip in intensity when you start the second half which can manifest itself in some sloppy tackling and how about right there he ran right through that weak tackle attempt Shane Brown in motion right hey he'll get it here on the Jet Sweep and he's brought down at the 34. call it a gain of four I don't care what the emphasis is in the NFL at any given time every defense is still going to say their number one goal every game is stop the run and right now they're not doing that and that really chips away at your confidence line of scrimmage the 24. this is second and six there's gone shoves him aside going underneath it and he'll be brought down with a first down as the tackles made at the Chiefs 15-yard line 19 yards there on the catch and run and this is why trying to cover the angle route is so difficult anyone playing the linebacker position when they see it running back out of the backfield widen because he hits towards the flat first oftentimes you widen too much and over commit he cuts up inside and that's what we saw there nice pickup for a first down foreign from the red zone now gone he's got it complete to Gibbs and he's brought down just outside of the 10 at the 11. they'll give him four yards there and it'll be second down offensively that's the mismatch that you want you want to force a linebacker to try and cover your back out of the backfield out in some open space the linebackers nowadays they run like bats and they take a lot of pride in covering what a nice play he made there Neil touchdown I'm in Ross Saint Brown his second touchdown of this Super Bowl and the Lions have taken the lead as they go right down the field and score on the opening drive of the second half fighting his Target and that'll put six up on the board just like they drew it up in their playbook and reiterated on the sidelines right perfect route a good throw at the defense they had no answer for that right there Patterson now for the extra point foreign [Music] lead now so that drive consumes nine plays all told and it's capped off by a touchdown for the Lions how does the kickoff unit as they run up and send this one away and here comes a return from just beyond the goal line and he'll be dropped at the 21 yard line so bringing it out of the end zone proves not a good decision loses him about four yards so here's the Chiefs offense ready for their first reps in half number two and this game was all square at halftime but now they find themselves down seven following the opening drive touchdown here in the third quarter and they need to take a good relaxing deep breath don't you think because right now they might start to feel like they've got to play catch up here and start matching them point for point but it's still too early to get there they can still run their offense plenty of time to get back in this game one play has him up past the 40 already and another First and Ten looking to throw his Mahomes the tight end Kelsey has it over the middle another first down this time on a gain of 19. now have they completed a couple on this drive but they peeled off some pretty good chunks of yardage too absolutely great start two nice plays in the pass game now can they continue to feed off that yeah so the ball moves into lion territory now here's First and Ten right at the 40. now here's Mahomes Valdez scandaling the result only four yards there on the play and that'll bring up second down [Applause] again they'll throw with Mahomes another catch for barbell Stanley he's up to 70 yards receiving now as that last catch gets him a first down thank you here's Mahomes to throw and that is incomplete now the coverage a little too good there and it's second down well that was all about the defender making life difficult for the receiver very tough for a guy to hold on to the football through all that contact he ends up forcing the incompletion an incomplete pass on first down that leads to a second and ten shotgun snap to Mahomes and he's got his man in stride complete and he's going to be taken down right at the 10-yard line [Applause] so not quite a first and goal it's First and Ten from the 10. and again it's Mahomes touchdown Marquez Valdez scandling bringing in that one from Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are an extra point away now from time this ball game to a strong drive here to lead off this third quarter that has him an extra point away from tying things up and partner this is pretty much what they envisioned when they were sitting there in the locker room thinking about getting things going to start here in the third quarter getting out there a field goal would have been fine but going ahead and scoring here x point away from time things up that's exactly how they drew it up on the board extra point by bucker Is On Target [Applause] foreign Square here in this third quarter as the kicks away and it'll come out to the 25 as Raymond will elect not to bring it out getting set to go again here on offense Jared Goff trots back onto the field and he had the touchdown on the last drive also four for four very very effective what does he need to do to translate that forward into this truck not think that what he saw in coverage as last time is exactly what he's going to get again he's got to play ahead and start and start thinking to himself okay we just did that what are they going to take away now what do we go to as a counter and continue to encourage his offensive line to continue to give him time they were really good on the last Drive on second down Montgomery and from the 25 they worked this to the 29 a gain of four well partner they've been running it well the entire game and the big guys up front they're a huge reason why and now they're reaping the benefits as they continue to open up big holes and gain nice yardage they are in need of six yards here if they hope to move the chains throwing on third golf [Applause] he's got it and he'll be taken down but he does have first down yardage that one goes for 29 yards on third down but the kind of game he's had so far he had to know that on third down that they would be looking his way if they did for big yardage and a first down I think the defense fall asleep but the switch on that one I would have doubled him tripled him anything to keep the ball out of his hands so now First and Ten in Chiefs territory at the 43. [Applause] chance of turning the corner he can only get back to the line of scrimmage second and ten coming up he's having a big game running the football but that one will hurt the yards per carry a little bit Yeah but the average he's got so far that's the type of average he wants to take with him to contract negotiations nothing so after the run for No Gain here's second and ten straight ahead with Gibbs here oh that one well designed as he'll take this down to the 30-yard line first down Lions on a pickup of 13. Pardon if you want more carries I think we saw how you get them showed that he's got the fresh legs and he picked up the first down on that run don't just ask for him show him that you're supposed to get the up so First and Ten now from the 30. they'll fake the give now gone a good pick a pick here 26 yards for a tight end he's got good straight line speed and on that route he's often the guy that gets overlooked nice job there finding him inscribe for really good yardage man they've got three tight ends here on first and goal to add some extra mass off play action here's gone touchdown Detroit James Mitchell from four yards out and the Lions have broken our tie as they take the lead wears a tight end you've got to really sell that this is a run they're gonna fake the give hope the linebackers bite and here they do just enough that Split Second that's all it takes for that tight end to leak out into the end zone touchdown extra point try now for Patterson seven-point lead now so that drive seven plays in length and the end result a Detroit touchdown here are the Lions now as they line up and kick this one away thank you from a yard or two deep here comes a return and he'll wind up getting a couple extra yards here for his trouble to bringing it out of the end zone as he's down at the 27. another Drive coming for KC and we'll see Marquez Valdez scambling once again pretty good game for him so far I guess he's still got time here to make this a great game but so far he's been solid I like where you're going with that because it has been pretty good but there's always that hint that things can really escalate for him and right now they feel like they're somewhat keeping him in check but he has found the end zone once but boy he can explode at any moment man when you hit that end zone once you want to find it again don't you yes you do you get you hungrier you get greedy in a good way quarter of a tight football game as we've come up on a second and ten Mahomes gonna throw able to find gray here they get six that'll leave him with third and four Mahomes now to throw oh he's got a man Wide Open complete and he gets us to the other side of Midfield across the 45 before going out that's a third down conversion to 24 yards there nice play and passing yardage-wise now up over 350 in this game pretty nice performance definitely that which usually means you're putting a lot of pressure on guys trying to cover if you're defensive back and they put over 250 yards on you you've had a long day the key to everything if you're doing it without throwing interceptions or turning the ball over throwing on first down is Mahomes [Applause] homes multiple Defenders getting home there for a loss of 11. okay I'm not sure you could actually draw a better pass rush than that one right there nowhere to go outside he had to keep backing up and backing up and backing up eventually dropped for a huge loss [Applause] well they're in some hot water now after that sack it's second and 21. now whistles and a flag down looked like one of the chief linemen might have moved jumping early from his tight end spot maybe trying to get a jump start on that route yeah I think you're exactly right about that and oftentimes when you see that that means the play call was supposed to come in his Direction and he was eager to go catch a pass [Applause] on the play and it makes it third down and two yards to go that's a good bounce back play right there after taking a sack on first down didn't quite get it to the marker but now they're in a much better spot for a third and short yardage call through the offensive coordinator you like looking at that section a heck of a lot better than trying to figure out third and long now meanwhile a pest that should have been intercepted but it winds up falling incomplete whether that's a little grabbing a little hand Fighting by any means necessary on third down he was able to get the job done in the secondary and SWAT that one away boy a call like this certainly tougher to make in his Super Bowl but they'll go for it on four down to Valdez gambling over the middle and he is going to have the chiefs first down it'll wind up being a gain of five there on Fourth and two fourth and two they got it that was kind of that gray area is that a feel thing whether you go run or pass there offensively I think it's a field thing it's a tendency thing about what you like to do with yourself on offense as well as knowing how strong they are against the run down he goes the second back at the 36. flying in for that sack Aiden Hutchinson well partner I would say just avoid play action but that's not just been the problem this defense they've been getting pressure on all types of pass plays and really piling up the sacks in this contest throw it's Mahomes he'll drop this off to Pacheco it'll be a gain of five and that'll bring up a third and 11 situation [Applause] backed up here tough spot needing 11 yards to pick up the first throwing his Mahomes on third short throw hauled in by Kelsey and he'll be stopped at the 27-yard line well short of the first down marker we are through three quarters of play here from Allegiant stadium in Super Bowl 58 you are watching the NFL Audi a sports and we're back in the Super Bowl time to decide who gets to hoist that Lombardi trophy as we begin the fourth and final quarter of action Rutgers kick here is good and that'll bring him back within four so an interesting call there to take the three but I guess they're thinking that their hands were tied but you know fourth quarter that field goal might not help him that much in the air yeah eventually they're going to need the touchdown the thinking must have been they didn't feel confident about picking it up there hoping maybe on defense they can get better field position get a turnover get a better play and then they'll have a chance to attack the end zone [Applause] after the field goal here's butker to kick it away no run back here for Raymond this will be a Touchback here's the lion offense now as they get ready to take over they have the lead obviously late in the game I guess the good news for them is if for some reason they would make a mistake a field goal does the opposition no good everyone loves to have a little bit of a cushion and that helps you immeasurable that is do all the things that you're taught in order to close out the game don't even let that become an issue yeah but still a one possession game this one not fully over yet well we looked at each other right when he flinched we knew that that flag was coming yeah offsides easy call Mark off the five and keep it moving a boost here to start the drive after the penalty it's first and five now it's gone Wright's got it 22 yards on the catch and run a first down for many team evaluation of tight ends has really changed we used to wonder about how they would block first and foremost now we want to know how these guys can run because we envision them in offenses catch the ball how much yardage can they gain after that and that on display there for a good pickup first down here's the Rumba Montgomery now the result here a pickup of eight leaves him with two to go on second down if you can keep getting gains like that Charles with the lead here in the fourth quarter I mean keep running it right no doubt about it but with the offense coordinator has to do is understand they're going to continue to stack the line of scrimmage what runs do you have in your Arsenal that'll work against a stacked box and continue to move the ball back to Montgomery runs second down a gain of five good enough for the first down well with the fumble he had earlier we know how key keeping the football is here at fumble earlier probably at the Forefront of his mind just hold on to this thing it's also at the Forefront of the mind of the guys who are trying to get the ball from them and since they've seen him drop it on the ground before they're doing everything possible to have him do it again they need that turnover they'll keep pounding here in Montgomery and nothing much materializing there on the first down run he'll get a couple and that's it trailing in the fourth this close of a game that's a penalty you just can't afford it's an absolute killer and it's one that drives coaches and teammates insane so a big penalty there on the face mask leads to First and Ten [Applause] and he'll get him inside the 15 down to the 14-yard line that'll be a pickup of four as they work with this four point fourth quarter lead and he continues to pile up the yardage that puts him over a buck 50 now and this defense has really had his problems trying to keep him contained if nothing else they've already taken a couple minutes off the clock here already as they come up second down they'll try the air now with gone got Saint Brown running the quick slant here and now they're inside the 10 as he's brought down at the nine give him a gain of five on the completion and it'll leave him with third and a full yard to go [Applause] let's go [Applause] there's gone [Applause] and he's able to get this down to the five-yard line before he's out of bounds give him a gain of four able to convert and that sets up first and goal now great mix of play calling so far three runs three passes all three passes have been completions first and goal I think on defense now you have to almost take a chance rely on your scouting pick what you think they would run here and just load up for it and see what happens and able to give one man the slip there as he works his way forward for about three not a whole lot there after the penalty but remember it was first and five not First and Ten so now they can keep grinding out first downs and good things can happen for him just second and short coming up second and goal from the one [Applause] once more Montgomery and this time he'll score touchdown Lions well he bit the Workhorse on this drive and it would have been unfair to bring someone else in to finish the job so they go back to him again and he delivers with a touchdown run Patterson now for the extra point [Applause] and he's been a busy man five for five now as he knocks another one through to extend the lead foreign total eight plays and it was David Montgomery's touchdown run that polished it all off the kickoff team on the field now as they will send this one away [Applause] he'll bring it out of the end zone and tackled at the 21-yard line so a net negative there of four yards another Drive coming for KC and we'll see Marquez Valdez scambling once again they might want to mix something up defensively because he's been shredding them a bit hasn't he that he has and even with all the changes that you know are going on on the defensive side of the ball he's still finding ways to get open in the right s and the delivery has been pretty good too there's over 100 yards has the one touchdown score to this point first down yardage on the first play of the drive 14 yards Charles he's now over 400 yards passing in this one it feels like he has a zillion completions just a very memorable effort from a guy that we thought could be in line for a big game and he has exceeded our expectation that he has and I'm not really surprised at all because when he looked at this offensive unit they are loaded across the board and of course the guy throwing them he's a big time player himself they brought it from start to finish and really helped get the better of the opposing secondary this linebacking core they've done a good job of keeping that running game in check haven't they they certainly have and what they'll also do when this game is over the guys up front the big defensive line because they've kept them clean so to speak not letting blockers the Chiefs on third down they've converted three times and eight chances this is third down and 12. man open it's Tony he's got it and it's going to be another first down as they'll get him to the ground at the Lions 44-yard line give him 22 there on the third down conversion and in a two score game obviously every play every third down like we saw there magnified big pickup it was a huge pickup but they really want though is they're not even getting to third down they've got to maximize time and can serve as much as possible so the ball moves into lion territory now here's First and Ten at the 44-yard line they go play fake Mahomes finds his man it's Kelsey on the crossing route here another strong gain on the last two plays they've moved it a combined 33 yards but give them credit for a good read right there because they read the man coverage on the right side and said to tight end a few steps down the field and then angled him to the left on a Crossing route and he was able to get enough Separation on this play to turn it into a nice game on First and Ten here's Pacheco [Applause] gets those one-on-one blocks and creates a crease for your Runner hold the Converses though you've got a Windows one-on-one blocks and when you don't that's the result you end up with that loss of three a rare stumble on a promising Drive here's second and 13. they'll throw there but that's going to wind up incomplete when you're leading in the final quarter your radar has to be up for any potential deep shot and probably not the last one they're going to see in this game not as long as they hold this lead a long way to go here on third down for the eighth play of the drive now here's Mahomes that'll be caught it's Tony and he'll be taken down but he does have first down yardage 27 yards there on a very nice third down conversion and now a tip of the cap to the man under Center Charles he just went over 400 yards passing in this ball game he's got the touchdown passes to boot taking pretty good care of the ball just all around a really solid performance yeah just check check and check right because he certainly showed he was worthy of the trust that his team put in it a handful touchdown to his credit thus far nice just crossing off yardage milestones and win or lose his name has to be in serious discussion for player of the game he released that awkwardly it almost looked like a pitcher who gripped his fastball a little too hard and let it go late and it bounced in front of the plate yeah one of those fast balls it ends up at 57 feet not 60 feet six inches just a little short with the arm which is unusual because we saw him in warm-ups he's got a big strong arm when he delivers it with confidence and they'll lose yardage here they go backwards to the 13-yard line that's going to go down as a loss of five and it brings up third down tried to go draw play out of the gun down here yeah they tried to spread things out didn't they they want to move people away from the center of the field away from the line of scrimmage near the ball so the runner could find some space unsuccessfully though now on Third and long they'll look to throw and a turn they're going to be incomplete they converted twice a third down that drive already but make it a third we always talk about in adjustments they're able to shut them down on that attempt so on fourth down Mahomes off Harrison bucker on for the Chiefs field goal from the right hash and this one just a chippy bucker's kick here is good and that'll make this an eight-point game all right so they needed two scores to get back in the game the field goal there maybe not exactly what they wanted but the necessary First Step there's still time remaining and there's enough time to get it done they've got to get it the least a three and out here to get the ball back preferably a takeaway foreign goal here's butker to kick it away this taken in at the goal line and in hindsight probably should have taken a knee as he only gets this out to the 16-yard line Detroit's offense ready to take over their lead back down to one score after the field goal a moment ago and so they'll be looking to string together a few first downs likely on the ground as they begin First and Ten to Montgomery to begin the drive credit him with a one-yard gain there to make it second and nine a tight game like this such a tough spot for the offense to be and even though they have the lead Charles back up so close to their goal line they got to protect the football and that's when you have to take care of your team with play calling as well not a lot of misdirection not a lot of counters not a lot of plays where you have extra ball handling get it right to the hands of your running back tell them to take care of the ball and try to move forward are they trying to throw on second down but this one is incomplete David Montgomery the target out of the backfield and it'll bring up third down foreign here needing nine yards to pick up the first golf now looks to throw they'll set up the screen to Montgomery yeah he will be very close to a first down but I see the closed Fist of the referee and that means fourth down so the completion results there in nine yards and that's gonna bring up the fourth down I hate to surrender the football when you're nursing a slim lead but they're gonna have to punt it away trust that defense play at this stage of the game as well you don't need to press it here because you do have that little bit of a cushion and you count on your D to make it stand up Chief just in town now this offense back out and set to go for their next drive and last time they got three points but it was a chip shot field goal and when you go to the sideline after a chip shop he'll go maybe the offense not too happy it's a balancing act isn't it because you're exactly and in this league you take points when you can get easily done another example right there how this defense really is winning the entire game at the point of attack yeah right there the line of Scrooge because they are dominating it allows their interior guys to get up field and spill into the backfield so how are you going to combat that you know does it bringing your tight end keep him in your running backs they have to step forward bottom line your offensive line has to block them first to give yourself a chance working the sideline there good route good catch first down and he gets out of bounds they have to let the play call because you have to run some guys down the middle of the field to draw some of the Defenders away they can't just let them guard the sideline exclusively that's how it's going to work Sidelines and incompletions to use the clock [Applause] field here's Mahomes and that one drops down incomplete good coverage there of course the ball free and it's second down this is certainly a team that has proven that likes to Target its backs through the air and defensively they were aware of that and certainly we're prepared on that throw under four to go now as they come up on second down okay throwing now is Mahomes [Applause] seven out of that so they're left with a third and three right there he rose to the occasion late in a close game it's something he thought about dreamed about and worked out throughout his career because in these types of situations he wasn't going to allow extra coverage to keep him from getting the football [Applause] Mahomes looks to throw on third down pitch and catch here to Travis Kelsey and he will have a Chiefs first down by a couple of yards as they're able to convert here on Third and three there's a completion to the tight end and I think that we're looking at something out of Central Casting frankly absolutely I mean size the hands speed I mean can flat out run you put that whole package together you light up the eyes of an offensive coordinator don't you think [Applause] you're short of the mark good gain of nine on first down foreign [Music] run by Pacheco on second down and it'll be a little shy of the 25 here at the 26-yard line fourth quarter down to the final two minutes and we've got a one score game the Chiefs in possession of the ball as we welcome you back they come up on a First and Ten desperately needing a score here on what could be their final drive got an open man it's Valdez gambling nice well coached a team that understands what's going on they still have time to work the middle of the field as they just did there plenty of time all three timeouts still remained here's First and Ten now [Applause] and he'll get it here to the 10-yard line I know a lot of people won't like the draw called in that situation but every now and then that pops big in this case it didn't happen [Applause] second and Six coming up Holmes [Applause] touchdown Chiefs Richie James from 10 yards out and the Chiefs have a chance to tie things up as they Trail by two here in the fourth so they got the touchdown they needed to cut this to two but now they've got to get back to the Huddle no celebration time can't figure out what they're gonna do on the two-point conversion thank you one more hurdle here they need the two-point conversion to further moment stay alive in these playoffs the homes [Applause] dancing to his left and he is in in the Super Bowl is tied huge huge conversion there to tie this thing up but they're not done yet their defense needs to get a stop yeah there's still plenty of time for those team to come downfield and put some points on the board but job one was taken care of the two-point conversion to give this thing tied thank you [Applause] setting up to be a finish for the ages here all tied in the final minutes of the Super Bowl as the kick is away Raymond now on the return [Applause] not much happening on the return as he'll get this to about the 23. ends now all right here here it is they've got the chance to win the game you'd have to think they need to get it near the opposite 40 to have a chance to kick a game-winning field goal we'll see what they can do and you're right about that because if we look at it in mackerel that's what it looks like but I think it might grow the head coach has already asked a special teams coach what is he feeling what does he think where does he want the football what's the yard line we have to get and he's already relayed that to his quarterback in his offense they know what the goal is now the key can they get there thank you they come up now on second and two gone timeouts as they get it with 26 seconds to go in the football game two-timeouts still in their back pocket it's First and Ten as he's going to be stopped before he could even get started the Lions now going to use the second of their timeouts that'll leave them with just one remaining in this fourth quarter of play thank you they'll come up now this is second and long thank you now go off same brown making the catch on the outroad and he'll be brought down with a first down as the tackles made at the Chiefs 30. and the clock will now stop as a timeout is called with five seconds left every eye in the stadium locked in on Riley Patterson the chisel used the first of their timeouts that'll leave him with two remaining we'll be back after this and now it all rests on the right foot of their kicker this undoubtedly the biggest kick of his life and this one is right down Broadway and it's sideline as they have taken the lead in the final seconds so they tried to ice him there but it's fair to say it did not have the intended effect and I've known kickers that take it as an affront and there he says you think you're going to Rattle me think again the kickoff unit is out on the field and they will send this one away [Applause] and the Lions yes the Detroit Lions have won the Super Bowl and to the Super Bowl champions they etched their name forever in NFL immortality that's pretty phenomenal right there actually gave me chills just to hear you say that because immortality forever and ever when you look in the record books you'll see this team you'll see their picture that your name will be a part of it that's got to be an incredible feeling because it's been a long journey to get there and now they get a chance to enjoy it foreign thank you [Applause] foreign foreign foreign
