[Applause] it's Madden NFL 24 on EA Sports and coming up next it's a cross-conference showdown it's the Detroit Lions and the Kansas City Chiefs and it's all up next on EA Sports it is a beautiful night for football here in the Midwest as we are at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City Missouri Straight Ahead we've got a pretty good one on tap here as it'll be the Detroit Lions Chiefs with Charles Davis some Buena Gordon basini this Chiefs Club you'd have to imagine well positioned to make a run at repeating a Super Bowl champions but it all starts and ends with number 15 and then of course the reigning League MVP Patrick Mahomes and it's not just his talent as you know partner because we've seen that on display it's his leadership and the trust that the organization has in him to help bring along an offense and turn it into one of the League's best but meanwhile for the visiting Lions they're going to be a pretty trendy sleeper pick I feel obligated contractually to mention that they've only won one playoff game since 1957 and that number gets more and more impossible every year but finally Charles Davis can they break the string in 2023 break it snap it cut it whatever you want to use this Lions team I fully expect to be in the playoffs in 2023. I like the way that they're being built here's the kicker Harrison butker ready to get this one started and we are underway from Kansas City [Applause] and he's up across the 25 and down at the 28. the Lions offense getting ready to go to work here and under Center a man whose career has been rejuvenated a bit as of late and season number eight now out of Cal it's Jared Goff rumors of golf demise greatly exaggerated it seems boy what a big year he had last year 29 touchdowns and led the Lions to their first winning season since 2017. under his leadership the Lions expect to make the playoffs for the first time in a few seasons [Applause] now the former bear this is David Montgomery and he'll get it into enemy territory just across Midfield at the 49. good yardage as he rumbles for 24 at a first opening quarter his opening carry of the game I think they'll give it to him a few more times as they should you're exactly right about that but that type of a run you want to repeat it many times until they show signs of stopping it Anki did his visualization exercising before this one and they're paying off and not a whole lot of room to operate there on the first down run he gets maybe three it went right back to him but he pretty much had nowhere to go on that play yeah the previous carry looked pretty good that one maybe he's a little tired I don't know yeah maybe he should have tapped out and had a second bat come in and maybe make that run who knows from the 46 here's second down and seven five he's definitely tough to get down we just saw it right there but how about what we did see Pursuit ramp up and then the big finish with the tackle now on third down an extra DB out there for the Chiefs foreign that's going to be incomplete the contact there enough to jar that ball free and it brings up fourth down how about that red man coverage and decided to test them early but they've turned up to the task and forced the incompletion on fourth down Jack Fox on to punt for Detroit back deep is Kadarius Tony and a little too much mustard on that one it hits a couple yards into the end zone a missed opportunity there maybe to pin him back for the Chiefs offense now ready to go to work for the first time led by Patrick Mahomes the 2018 NFL Most Valuable Player there's nothing the League's best quarterback didn't achieve last season Super Bowl trophy check MVP award check League leader in yards and touchdowns check how does he top the season he had last year I don't know but Patrick Mahomes he usually finds a way the Holmes will lead the Chiefs up First and Ten at their own 20-yard line they'll come out throwing here to start the drive got a man that's Richie James it'll be a game of 10 to start to drive out and buy a few inches that'll be a first down but one of the ways that quarterbacks keep all the receivers alive in a play never walk in on any one guy make sure you keep your eyes moving scan the field and here he finds the open guy for a nice pickup [Applause] throwing on first down is Mahomes Cannon only able to gain a couple there and it'll be second down I know it was a game but you have to sense probably a little bit of disappointment there because when it's out there in open space I think they expect to get more out of a play don't you especially when you're getting it to your guy out of the backfield you're expecting him to be able to create something to be a little more Shifty yeah no doubt about a good open field tackling held it to an okay game Simon he's got a million that's James and he goes out of the 12 yards there as they keep this drive rolling it's another first down Bill Patrick Mahomes as he's playing at such an elite level defensively coming into a game like Charles what that's got to be a lot of things but what worries you the most I think you're exactly right about that the list is extent about what worries you the way you can move make completions on the run the way you can throw again you name it he gets it done the biggest thing that I got to be careful here all right he's on the plus side of 30. there may be a little gray in the beard but that's not slowing down the speed as far as he's concerned what he's saying I'm on the plus side of 30. but if you're on the plus side of third you all know what I'm on the plus side though all I know is that run right there let us know there's still some life in those legs absolutely still got a lot of life left in those legs accepted it's man coverage I don't think it's going to be the only time he'll try and hit that route to the outside in this game he'll test the perimeter at that time they were up to the challenge an incomplete pass on first down that leads to a second and ten now Mahomes foreign in couldn't hang on third down he did a fine job there of not hitting him before the ball arrived and I've got to tell you you can often miss time that play because of the angles of approach when you're going to get him sometimes you panic as well and think I've got to be there right now instead in this case time to perfectly yeah that's not going to get it done he'll come up well short of the first at about the 21. two yards on the pickup there and it'll be fourth down what we hear so often how tackling has become almost a lost art in the NFL game but it's so important to tackle well on these receivers especially in a play like this one third down they gave him the underneath stuff you got to go up and make the tackle right away bucker's kick here is good cheats around to a three-nothing lead so they're able to end that drive with three points in this one possession ball game and ideally you went into every drive with points most quarterbacks in Taylor's ended with a kick right a p-a-t that's number one field goal you'll take punts you really don't want to do that in this case they'll take the field goal and get prepared for the rest of the game foreign [Applause] goal here's butker to kick it away [Applause] and it'll come out to the 25 as Raymond will elect not to bring it out back onto the field come the Lions for their second overall Drive the last series form a little disappointing forced to punt and now they'll try to do better here and Come Away with some points as they begin this drive First and Ten [Applause] they'll start on the ground with Montgomery and he's going to get a good gain of nine here up to the 34. well they're making an effort to get the ground game going tonight so far it's working I like what we're seeing from the offensive line they seem to have the leverage going and they're controlling things and re-establishing the line of scrimmage moving that defensive front backwards but also like with the runners giving us too it appears that he's been waiting all day long to get out here and take off [Applause] the second down pass play there but it's incomplete foreign [Applause] pass on that last play and that means they'll need to come up with something here on third down golf now looks to throw oh they would have gotten a conversion if he gone instead the drop means it'll be fourth down no surprise at all they're looking for the big man early in this one the only surprise for them he couldn't hang on to the pass Jack fox out to punt here on fourth down fair catch called for and made at the 16 or maybe the 17-yard line so possession goes over here on the punt and it's Chiefs football First and Ten minutes [Music] before on play action it's Mahomes over the middle that's hard in by Tony brings it up just shy of the 25 of that quickness there on the Move it'll go down as a gain of six headed second down we've seen quite a bit of the short passing game here early on first quarter haven't we we have and I think it works a couple of way for this team because number one you throw the short game until they stop it and if they're not going to stop you keep throwing in occasionally you'll break a tackle and turn into a bigger game also if they start to creep up start the pressure receivers down here a six yard pass on back-to-back Place picks up the first it'll start for them near Flawless defense gets them a three and out two Quick Pass connections on offense so that's how a team works together just what you described get on the ball give them a little momentum and they're capitalizing off of that thanks a lot guys now a seventh round surprise from a year ago it's Isaiah Pacheco and he's going to take this ahead for right around three yards but no more than that second down yeah I don't know if it's exactly a win-win but if you're on offense you'll take that kind of a run all right it was kind of stacked up found a little bit of yardage and frankly they're pretty close to stand on schedule on offense The Playbook is still open for the coordinator and now he'll fire deep downfield for James [Music] oh that's some good closing speed there defensively because that looked open for a minute but that's great work with the ball in the air never gave up converged on his man and broke the play up they head to the line facing a third and seven following the incompletion on second down here's Mahomes to throw and they'll set up a screen to Pacheco they'll be taken down but he does have first down yardage a strong eight yards will keep this drive rolling I'm assured that was necessarily a safety valve or a check down throw on third down sometimes just trying to find the open guy and get him the ball he did exactly that and found a way to pick up a first down [Applause] so two first downs and that moves the ball to the 42 now first and 10. a give right side for Pacheco nothing doing he's immediately taken down at the line of scrimmage tackled by Emmanuel Mosley we try to create space for your running back the first thought is how physical is the offensive line sometimes it's just positioning on that play it didn't matter about positioning or being physical the defensive front they out leveraged him and won the battle Mahomes gonna throw complete this is part of why this guy's got multiple MVPs on the mantle we're used to seeing him make the impossible throws but here Mahomes knows he's got nothing so wisely just gets rid of it [Applause] here comes the eighth play of the drive and they need a full 10 yards on third down throwing now is Mahomes [Applause] yeah foreign fourth down Tommy Townsend to punt for Kansas City back deep Khalif Raymond and that one hits at the seven but bounds into the end zone and that'll be a Touchback here's the Detroit offense now as they head back out onto the field the crowd may be losing just a little bit of the edge after back to back punts they want some big plays they want to see some offense they want to see somebody break away whether it's through the air or on the ground now it'd be interesting to see where the patience is on both sides each head coach can you hang in there and not try and force something they can put your team in some Jeopardy golf on first down completing it here to Marvin Jones into space at the 45 and all the way down to the 41-yard Line 39 yards the distance covered on the catch and run well that's something that this defense is not going to be able to allow if they're going to have success here they've got to be able to wrap up and get guys on the ground they end up letting him get away and it turns into a big play here early on I could just see veteran observers of the game shaking their heads and talking about the dearth of tackling in the game today so the big play gets them across Midfield now for First and Ten now a play fake and it's gone [Applause] incomplete took a shot couldn't connect but there is a certainty in this game we know that wherever he goes he's going to draw a big time crowd throws into double coverage there and look that's something that he's going to have to deal with a lot in this game I'm sure yeah they were lucky to get away with that one where it just fell incomplete but they're going to count on him to uncover Leighton routes and make some difficult catches [Applause] field and he'll be brought down with a first down as the tackles made at the Chiefs 18. 23 yards the pickup there well that certainly has to feel good that's not all the time that the play caller should get all the credit sometimes I think in the Huddle the quarterback just says hey who's going to make a play for me I just need something right here and the end result there nice first down God keeps moving and he's able to get it down to the two-yard line 55 yards rushing for him now as he has gotten the night off to a hot start and they really need to get something going didn't they they had punted on the last two possessions the running game starting to come to the front for them providing a nice pickup there to keep this drive going two big plays in succession not sure this D knows what hit him but now they got to get ready it's first and goal Montgomery diving for the End Zone will get there touchdown some good running there at the end of the drive he had the burst that set up the first and goal and then one play later he's in the end zone Brandon what I liked about that sequence is I'm not sure who made the play call but they understood the situation understood the momentum a nice hard charging run give it right back to him and let him cap things off yeah [Applause] extra point by Patterson up and good and that makes it a 7-3 lead [Applause] here are the Lions now as they line up and kick this one away [Applause] now Isaiah Pacheco going to bring it out of the end zone and the decision to come out of the end zone is going to cost him five yards as he's taken down right at the 20. the Kansas City's offense Now set ready to go over on the sideline hoping to hit that reset button between possessions last time out they had to punt it away this time hoping to finish this thing off in the end zone the Holmes will lead the Chiefs up First and Ten at the 20. I'll try and start this drive in the air has this man that's James first down yardage on the first play of the drive give him 14. slam routes effective no matter who's running the route and catching the ball but when you have a receiver of that stature you have to be a little bit more precise throwing it you don't have the same catch radius with the bigger targets so they'll come up first in 10 now from the 33. swing this out to Tony there goes again to 10 in the Kansas City first down that was a lightning fast decision that time he just caught it got rid of it because he saw his guy was going to be open immediately so he took the r the run out of the play he took the O the option out of the play and immediately got to the pass back to back good plays have him on the move on first down now here's Mahomes James has got it complete that'll go for a gain of seven and that's going to bring out second down foreign [Applause] incomplete too much contact to hold on to that one at its third down in any event it happened pretty quickly I'm not sure he made the right decision on that one I think if he had to do over again he would have found a different Target downfield but he made his decision and that one's incomplete again they'll throw with Mahomes and he will have it have it as they get five there on Third and two at first glance I thought he just used his size in order to win the route but he also have a little subtle move in there as well made the defender think he was going One Direction I was able to track the ball in another Holmes now on first down left side complete that's James and it'll get him down after a pickup of Eight Second and two Nothing Fancy on first down but a very consistent type of a play hit that slam a lot of people call an extension of the running game and it can be if that pass is completed because you hit a guy on the run like that you often can go for big yardage sets him up nicely for second down staying ahead of schedule his first catch good for eight for eight first down well this is what reading defenses and practice comes into play gotta know what you're running versus Zone versus man and how to run the proper route and they just executed that one pretty well [Applause] play action now it's Mahomes [Applause] and complete well momentary speed bump there with that throw partner the defense had other ideas and they're trying to mount a small stand before this drive reaches the end zone so after the incompletion on first now second and ten foreign [Applause] this drives taking up quite a bit in the first quarter now they are set up first and goal looking to throw his Mahomes and that throw behind his man he missed him incomplete down this close to the goal line first down surprise that wasn't a run I second down that gives me an option of running play action maybe throwing it the line of scrimmage once again the five as they get ready for second and goal they'll run out of the gun with Pacheco and he has met in his tracks behind the line at scrimmage it'll go down as a two-yard loss and it brings up a third down after one 7-3 the score on EA Sports second quarter from KC it's the Chiefs in possession of the football the Chiefs on third down they've hit two for four thus far this is third and goal to throw it's Mahomes Chiefs Marquez front timing there on that short slant Charles exactly right that was timed up so well the route the throw touchdown Harrison bunker is on for the extra point [Applause] and it's through and that makes the lead 10-7 so that drive 12 plays in length and it's capped off with a Kansas City touchdown [Applause] thank you foreign [Applause] now after the touchdown here's butker on to kick it away [Applause] and he's up past the 20 to the 22-yard line you see David Montgomery heading back out to begin the drive and I'm wondering if maybe they don't go away from him on this drive a little bit he's he's been great but they haven't scored a lot of points I think they still have to show him as a threat make sure he touches it a few times but as you pointed out use him as a decoy a little bit and get the ball in the hands of some other people in order to put more points on the board but he's done a really nice job of establishing them with his running he's established himself well now can they put more points up and they'll send the tight end in motion here to Montgomery to begin the drive and he'll get it out near the 40 to the 39. 74 yards for him on the ground so far tonight as he has been terrific in his first half Montgomery with a good game there and he broke 800 yards to the Bears NFL best ground game last season divisional rival Detroit took notice and brought him in to boost their growing offense play action it's gone he's going to get this one out to his fullback and he'll lose yardage on the play back at the 37-yard line that one unable to develop never got going a loss of a couple at its second down heck of a play there to get to him quickly and get him down for a loss I think they did a really nice job getting ready for this game scouting watching Phil and understanding defensively what the play design was now here's a deep shot that's complete give 32 on the play real important I'm not sure how this drive is going to end but how about the way they flip field position there a nice attacking play that picked up a heck of a chunk of yardage [Applause] foreign so the big Play Changes the complexion of things here's First and Ten just outside the 30. off play action here's golf that is caught Josh Reynolds back-to-back plays of right around 30 yards in the field position has totally been flipped how about the way they're moving the ball down the field they had a big play a moment ago followed it up with another nice one here and before you know it it's already looking at first and goal two big plays in succession not sure this D knows what hit him but now they got to get ready it's first and goal golf now looking to throw touchdown Sam laporta from four yards out and the Lions have taken the lead you get down near the goal line This is where having a sure-handed tight end becomes a luxury and it pays off big time especially when the defense sells out against the Run he finds himself open for an easy touchdown extra point try now for Patterson [Applause] and that makes it 14-10. the drive summary that time five plays and it's capped off by a touchdown for the Lions [Applause] here are the Lions now as they line up and kick this one away [Applause] and up to about the 26 yard line just across the 25. and the Chiefs now getting set to go a long drive last time out for this offense Charles if you remember they started basically in the shadows of their own End Zone marched it down the field and a lot of that was through the passing game and partner as a former defensive back I'm having almost a physical reaction watching what's happening right now but let's give credit words too because they've done an excellent job moving the ball through the air secondary getting picked apart pass by pass obviously they need to make some adjustments there on the back end and because offensively we know that they're not going to be shy about throwing that football he takes us beyond the 35 before going out of bounds a gain of 11 to kick off the drive and it's a quick first down a lot of tight ends just use their size and their strength try to occupy some space and kind of body people away and catch the football but not this guy he's a refined route Runner makes me wonder if he did some dance classes in his background with his footwork on First and Ten here's Mahomes sure too strong down he goes Alex anzalone coming in from that outside linebacker spot and he buries him for a loss of seven you know on these types of plays we're always looking to assess blame okay where did it break down sometimes it's just a great play don't need it all back at once but you figure they're going to need something here 17 yards to go on second down [Applause] it's going to wind up incomplete as a defensive back you have some weapons at your disposal that we don't often talk about and you can read the receiver's eyes you can read his hands and you know that the arrival of the ball is imminent and that allows you to make a play on it and oftentimes knock it away the Chiefs on third down they've converted three out of five thus far this is third and 17. yeah throwing there but this pass is going to wind up incomplete well they came up with points in their first two possessions but looks like they'll come up empty here on their third Drive the defense finally starting to get locked into them a little bit might have to go a little bit deeper into their playbook on their next possession here's Tommy Townsend now as he'll kick it away for the second time [Applause] he'll get credit for putting him inside the 20th the fair catch is made right at about the 19-yard line so a change of possession here on the punt and the lions will take over Jared Goff and the lion offense heading out he had the touchdown pass last time they had it and they'll start here with the First and Ten here's the 12th overall pick in April's trap Shamir Gibbs and he'll go down at the 26 following a gain of six but I think after that run the defense getting back in the Huddle and looking at each other and maybe starting to question her confidence a bit they give up a significant run six yards and now you're saying to yourself how do we stop them and do I have enough confidence to make a play thank you now a throne complete to his full back out of the backfield that what a first down pickup of eight good short hands there from a guy not accustomed to catching a whole lot of passes but how about the waves able to pull that one in and pick up good yardage from the 34 now here's First and Ten they'll fake the give now gone and he bats it away and it falls down in complete Zone coverage there and they were playing deep that makes it obviously a little bit harder to run by guys and that time it was not much of a window to get the ball in there and it winds up incomplete from the 34 they'll come to the line on second and ten give the gives he'll take this all the way up to Midfield first down Detroit 16 yards on the pickup pardon if you want more carries I think we saw how you get them showed that he's got the fresh legs and he picked up the first down on that run don't just ask for them show them that you're supposed to get the football foreign [Applause] wide trying to create a chance for the big shot and they took it if he comes down with that one that's a huge offensive swing but credit the defense with a nice play knocking that one away so now second and ten after the incompletion on first down a give to Montgomery out of the gun and a good one here is he'll Rumble all the way down to the 40-yard line 84 yards on the ground so far for Montgomery it's a first down I'm not sure how much more evidence they need partner than to understand that they don't start to slow him down it's going to be a long afternoon here at the stadium because he is just shredding him at this point and let's face it coming into the game they knew he would be the focal point of their attack this is going to take an 11-man unit on the defensive side to start making plays so eight yards on the completion there and it'll be second in a couple let's go it's showtime up the middle it's Montgomery what a great effort there he's going to get this inside to 15 and they'll spot it at the 13-yard line nice run first down for the Lions on a nice pickup of 18 yards well that last run makes this a hundred yard night I've loved the way he's hit the holes he's been quick he's been decisive and he's been a whole lot of fun to watch from the third team now they work on First and Ten [Applause] Brown so the completion good for seven there and that will bring up second down [Applause] they'll try the middle in Montgomery and the lions are going to have it first and goal is he'll take this down to about the three I hope we give enough respect to the big guys up front because they have been getting it done on this drive the holes have been large and they've been barreling through them picking up first downs they come out five wide three of them to the right side [Applause] here's golf and he has his receiver that's Jones Lions touchdown the three-yard touchdown pass as his guys are able to extend their lead that's just how they drew it up CD his first read was there got it to him quickly and into the end zone absolutely excellent execution by all involved in the coordinator Gotta Give him credit found the perfect play call quarterback Let it Fly as soon as the target came free and his guy made a nice catch just how you draw it up in practice and then executed in the game extra point by Patterson up and good and that makes it a 21-10 game thank you [Applause] the kickoff team on the field now as they will send this one away [Applause] and he'll get it up past the 20 to about the 22. Casey's offense ready to take over they'll look to make some inroads here trailing 21-10 as they come up on a First and Ten man together now Mahomes looking for his running back and he's got it and he's able to get this one up to his 30 before he's out of bounds the Gate of eight there on the play and they'll be left with second and a couple [Applause] they go play fake Mahomes he'll drop this off to Pacheco and he'll get it up near the 35 right at the 34 here four yards the pickup first down another catch for him there on this drive Brandon it looks like they're going to utilize him out of the backfield any way they can and that time they pick up a first down so now on defense do you assign a man to him and try and cover him before he gets going Mahomes firing complete and this will leave him a yard short nice pickup of nine yards on first down simple drag route here lined up out left and tried to work his way back across the field you probably saw me Twitch there partner because I think he wanted the ball a little bit sooner by the time he looked it in Defender was right on him from the 43 here's second down and one they go play action now Mahomes [Applause] down our Midfield spotted at the 48. it'll be a pickup of four good enough to earn him yet another first down many different ways to create space but on that play he did it with that big wide body of his didn't get a whole lot of yardage on the play but it did what it was supposed to pick up a first down 17 yards on the catch and run it's a first down [Applause] thank you [Applause] [Music] Pacheco gets it up the gun and he'll work his way inside the 30 now to the 28. a solid run on first down gain of seven leaves him with a second and three that's a strong pickup right there on first down and as this drive goes on we're seeing an offensive line and running game imposing its will ball on the 28-yard line here's second and three here's Mahomes to throw [Applause] Drive continues and the chains move again they like going to him in the slide he catches another one I think this comes under the heading off until they stop him why not go back to it he has something going really well great working relationship with the guy throwing the ball and they keep making the connection operating from the red zone now Mahone 's touchdown Kadarius Tony a 20-yard touchdown and the Chiefs have got it back to within the score as a former Defender I would be angry as well could not get off the field well executed offensive Drive no matter what the defense tried they couldn't stop them butker on for the p-a-t that one here and he's got it to make this a 21-17 game so that drive takes him down the field in eight plays and it's Kadarius Tony who catch things with a touchdown reception now after the touchdown here's butker on to kick it away foreign and his guys will get the football right at the 20-yard line David Montgomery and the Lions about set to begin this next series he's already cruised past the hundred yard Mark we haven't even gone away for halftime yet he might not want halftime all right why cool off keep everybody here let's stay out on the field and keep going but all that being said everything is really working well for them the play calling has been excellent the blocking's been terrific and obviously his vision and legs have hurtled him to this big number so far we could be seeing something really special here and we'll see how much they give him the ball here here's a throw complete right side to start getting and he'll be brought down with the first down after a gain of about 11 as that takes us to the two minute warning a reminder coming up here at halftime we'll ship you off to Orlando Jonathan Coachman will have first half highlights and Analysis from a back and forth first half that we've seen throwing on first down but this one winds up to be incomplete they always say the real estate is about location well guess what when it's a slant route the quick ones timing timing timing can't be able to lead your man with the football and the timing off right there threw it behind after the incomplete pass here now is second and ten now it's gone and that's going to be incomplete feels like they're getting caught in between here because that incompletions on first and second down now you got to worry a little bit about the clock because you prefer not to give another shot here in the first half if you don't pick up the first down guess what you're likely going to have to now they face a third and ten after back to back in completions there's gone but a Chase are gonna get him but she he's now going to use the first of their timeouts so as they take it over we step aside [Applause] here's Jack fox now foreign he's been a busy man here in this first half as he gets it away a 41-yard punt there with no return and they will take over First and Ten as the offense re-emerges there's wide receiver Kadarius Tony leading him out he's been good so far to this point in the second quarter need to get him even more involved maybe I would agree with that definitely yeah it's not even a question for me the way he's playing he's doing a nice job increase things more touches more opportunities maybe that can reverse things on the scoreboard for them they'll try to ratchet things up then maybe here in the second quarter Mahomes throw on target to James and he'll take this to the other side of Midfield before going out of bounds a good pick up there 21 yards he's been a busy man here in this one and they're showing off some nice footwork to stay in bounds and with those types of catches and the volume that we've seen in this game wouldn't you keep him busy as well I would of course you got to keep throwing it to him he keeps making plays Mahomes now on first down now he'll dump it underneath to his running back complete and a five-yard gain gets him to the 42. and we see another pitching catch there to the running back this position just continues to evolve they become just as critical to the passing attack as a lot of receivers tight ends because their ability to make people Miss in the open field can really generate big plays for an offense [Applause] bearing down on him there he could not hang on it's third down so it hasn't been a banner first half for the defense trying to cover him today but they'll take that one right there helping force that incompletion they come up now third and five following the incomplete pass throwing now is Mahomes [Applause] sets up the first and goal times now has now behind you and that's exactly what they did on that play First with the pass through the air nice chunk of yardage there and then additional pickup with his legs after the catch foreign so it's first and goal and a great opportunity to get that lead back before the break they'll try and run with McKenna and he's got he's got his touchdown jarek McKinnon punching it in from a yard away and the Chiefs will take the lead here the final not in the first half sometimes offensive you get too cute down near the goal line but there's nothing fancy about this one as coach Lombardi would say we get a seal here and we get a seal here and we run this play in the alley and that's good work did the whole hard and finish in the end zone extra point by bunker Is On Target and that gives him a three-point lead [Applause] foreign [Applause] [Applause] now after the touchdown here's butker on to kick it away and not wanting to risk anything here late in the half he'll just take a knee and they'll bring the football out to the 25. see David Montgomery heading back out to begin the drive and Charles you can't really fault him he's over 100 yards already he's not the reason they're losing and that is really unusual because ordinarily when you set the tone this way and have run it this effectively usually your team's in control so that's a very strange situation and you're right you can't follow him he's done a great job for his team thus far I'm guessing he's saying feed me on the sidelines now will they continue to do it now a first down throw gone the Lions will use the first of their timeouts as they'll stop it with 25 seconds to go here in half number one foreign [Applause] a big hitter to start the drive has him up near Midfield here for First and Ten now gone he'll go right back to Saint Brown the Lions now going to use the second of their timeouts so that means they're down to one remaining here as we head toward halftime [Applause] now a second down and six [Applause] throw golf green down to 15 seconds in to this point I've been impressed with the work defensively they have not allowed a lot of receivers to run free and there's another example another incompletion so after the second down in completion they'll come up now against a third and six [Applause] golf now looks to throw the left side completion he'll get it inside the 20. touchdown Detroit Marvin Jones in the final seconds of the first half and the Lions have taken the lead here in the final stages of this first half these two teams in this first half it's been fun back and forth back and forth well it's not fun for the defensive coordinators but offensive coordinators are enjoying it yeah they're having streaks here aren't they being able to put scores together and really Bunch them up and we have a tight game here you know we often talk about having the right shoes for the right Turf today is track shoes because that's what we've seen with these offenses yeah it's been an absolute track meet so far and fun to watch extra point by Patterson up and good and that will make this a four-point game all right [Applause] so just eight ticks remaining here in the first half is they'll kick this one away [Applause] and makes it across the 20 as his guys will set up shop at the 23-yard line and with time running short here they'll simply take a knee and that should do it for half number one so we've reached halftime in a wild first half we'll take a minute to catch our breath as we'll send you down to Orlando and we check in with Jonathan Coachman for our EA Sports halftime report coach okay Brandon thanks very much and welcome in everyone to our downtown Orlando studios and this EA Sports halftime report we saw a couple of high octane offenses getting it done in the first half both teams had no problems moving the football and you'd have to think the team whose defense shows up in the second half is gonna be the one who walks out of here with a victory okay Coach thanks as always this one still anyone's game as we welcome you back for quarter number three foreign [Applause] both these offenses have been in fine form what will the second half bring us as we are underway in quarter three [Applause] and he'll be tackled just shy of the 25. the Chiefs ready to go on offense to begin Corner number three well Charles in that first half we saw a fair amount of offense on both sides of the football and now the team trailing here will start with it in the third quarter and we both know this coach pretty darn well don't we because his game planning is always on point and now he's getting the ball to start the second half how about all the offense that you already referenced in the first half he'll put that all together and come out with something really strong I believe to get things going here in the third quarter [Music] on First and Ten here's Mahomes has his man that's James catch of corner number three I'll tell you what a lot of those mid-range throws have been available because sometimes teams get too concerned about the Deep ball and they leave too much space in front of them and these guys have been taking advantage so far ball up to the 35 now as they come up on First and 10th play action now it's Mahomes and now he'll fire deep downfield for James James and too much juice it'll be out of bounds incomplete they were maybe hoping for a little bit of a back shoulder fade there and that's a play has been in Vogue the last few years in all aspects of football but they couldn't get the hook up there here's second and ten now from the 35. Mahomes now to throw he's going to find his tight end gray complete dining room at Midfield and it's going to be another first down as they'll get him to the ground at the Lions 39. a big giant time on a catch and run and the Chiefs are going to get a fresh set of downs and this was a nice example of an offensive coordinator scheming his guy open just a little underneath route just trying to free up some space and it worked awfully well got him not just space but plenty of room to run after the catch to pick up really nice yardage again they'll throw with Mahomes James has got it another good one has two players whenever the discussions were at that time they're trying to slow down this offense it has not worked to this point yeah I have a vision right now of everything that was disgusted to have just being torn in shreds or being erased off of the Microsoft Surface tablets because none of it is working they are really locked in on offense [Applause] down there was Tony back in touch another night and the Chiefs have taken the lead here in this third quarter I know we often laugh and sometimes we even exalt the guys who are great trash talkers and give us some really funny lines but the bottom line is absolute production on the field his second touchdown to the game and they lead and now they'll be looking to their defense to preserve that lead bucker now to add the extra point [Applause] that time 75-yard drive five plays and it's Kadarius Tony who catch things with a touchdown reception [Applause] now after the touchdown here's butker on to kick it away here's Raymond bringing it out and we'll get him down right at the 25-yard lines in the same result and he opted for the Touchback a long time NFL vet Marvin Jones leading out this offense seems like the measuring stick for a receiver for a great game is 100 yards well he's well past that now and as we analyze how he's getting him that's what really becomes fun because let's face it they keep sending coverage at him keep trying to put the pressure on yet he finds ways downfield and finds openings that's a really crafty receiver [Applause] come on first down a little short pass here taken in by laporta and this will be a gain of five as he gets it to the 30. nice Rhythm throw there on first down he located his tight end made it nice easy pitch and catch hoping he can break a tackle or two wasn't able to do that there but still good yardage ball on the 30. they'll come up with a second and five golf now looking to throw [Applause] and it's Joe that'll put him over 150 yards receiving now quite a ball game and a first down and that last reception puts him over 150 yards now on the game Charles and now it's not just execution it's not just performance it's a mental aspect that's going on because right now he has got the defense so much on their heels got them looking at each other who's going to cover this guy and what type of coverage can we put out there it's good for a gain of six headed second down just about every quarterback is trained to really look down field first before you come back and make a nice safe throw and in this case that's exactly what he did found his running back let him create some space and it turned out to be a nice play for the offense ball right on the 50-yard line here's the second down and four they'll fake the handoff now golf this one swung out to Montgomery so give him two yards there on the completion and that's going to bring up third and two caught that look from you there partner I think we're on the same page on that one just his first catch I think we both thought he'd be a little more active in the passing game let's see if that's the start of them trying to get the ball to him a little bit more here in the second half they'll run it here's Montgomery foreign blocking downfield as he's got this almost to the 35-yard line 118 yards for him on the ground now he has been a tough man to bring down all night he continues to be effective running the football a big reason that they have the lead and I love one of the quotes that I read about him where he said of himself I love it when a team just hops on my back and I just carry him along first down they run again nothing doing barely able to muster a yard to hit the 35. I bet everyone crashed into ballcare before he even made the line and they hold them to just a yard from the 35 here's the second and nine enough now to throw open man right side of the same brown and he'll be brought down with a first down as the tackles made at the Chiefs 25-yard line give him 10 yards there as this offense is on a roll this drive continues to plunge forward yeah foreign [Applause] trucks down incomplete good coverage there forced the ball free and it's second down that's an excellent play by the defender he diagnosed that one closed quickly it helped Force the incompletion and incomplete pass leads to Second and ten from the 25. here's gone he'll leave it for Montgomery complete they do get a couple but they'll be left staring at a third and eight coming up that's a good job there by the corner we do talk about this a lot that a lot of Corners see their job as simply covering receivers tackling isn't everyone's thing but in this case he came up quickly and made a nice short tackle [Applause] throwing on third gone and this pass broken up but the contact well timed there and now fourth down one thing you have to see out of a rookie tight end is a real concentration when the ball's in the air and I'm not sure that he didn't but he has to be prepared for people making a play on it when that Ball's up for grabs foreign again here in the third so give him three on that drive you know normally you'd say we'll take it but the way points have been flying around it feels like a little bit of a letdown yeah you just have to wonder our field goal is going to be enough because as you pointed out the way touchdowns have been scored does kicking a field goal actually put you at a disadvantage the rest of the way all right nothing separating these two teams on the scoreboard as the kicks away here [Applause] and there will not be a return here it's a Touchback and it'll come out to the 25-yard line and now here comes Kansas City we have seen a lot of points here in this quarter for us up here in the booth it's been fun to watch the defensive coordinators probably scratching their heads yeah they're going a little bit crazy right now but let's face it all of our friends who play Fantasy they're enjoying the heck out of this show because most of them are creating and getting a bunch of points yeah points certainly not at a premium here we'll start the drive here with Pacheco and this will be a game of five as he gets it to the 30. the way things have gone in this one the running game's been something of an afterthought and that's not been too bad for them has yeah the offensive returns have been good but I guess we figured he and the ground game would be a bit more involved ball on the 30 they'll come up with a second and five Alma Holmes coverage and intercepted by Tracy Walker and they'll set up shop in enemy territory at the 45-yard line that throw Charles over the middle of the field and a few too many bodies in there got picked that's a normal situation too isn't it no matter how hard you try and spread the field sometimes there's always going to be a traffic jam it feels like towards the middle and if there's any type of a missed throw or maybe the ball's tipped or just too many bodies in the area an interception can result thank you [Applause] first down here's the realm of Montgomery there may be a measure of Revenge there he's had his way in this one but this time they get him behind the line officially it's a one-yard loss that's going to bring up second at 11. well that was one of the few times they've been able to contain him thus far he's over 100 yards for the game but he lost a bit off his total total Carrie back to Montgomery on second down and he's going to get back to the original line of scrimmage but that's about it the second down play not much better than the first just a gain of one there sometimes you're aligned perfectly in the play comes to you and sometimes you got to cover some ground to go make the plays we just saw there we saw a great great example of perseverance right there on that play gotta be careful they might want to throw one over his head as this game progresses they'll set up the screen to Montgomery and he gets this only to the 41 not near enough for the first he did his best to just get four out of that but not enough and now fourth down good reactions there defensively that screen was a little slow in developing and they shut that one down with little gain here comes the Lions punter now as he's on to punt for the fourth time tonight foreign well into the end zone for a Touchback now the Chiefs offense they get ready to head on the field and we'll see if they can bounce back from that last Drive in particular if they can bounce back at the quarterback position Charles after throwing their first interception of the ball game yeah some guys you know they're going to want to try and get a big play right away and take control back others they go I looked ahead a couple shorter passes a good little momentum back that way but for the defense that goal's not changing a bit they want another pick you're exactly right about you've got to watch them a little bit because in coverage they may cut down their gaps a little bit maybe their splits a little bit in order to try and get to the ball even faster after the incompletion here second and ten from the 20. it's Mahomes [Applause] put him over 150 yards quite a ball game and a first down this offensive game plan has just been sensational I mean when you think about everybody getting their receivers open so far it's really been impressive scheme design execution from the 34 now here's First and Ten looking to throw his Mahomes there before he's brought down on a nice little game good yardage there on first down because sometimes all you need to do on the screen is get one key blocked that might set your man free and that was pretty good pursuit to the football defensively or it could have gone for more ball under 40 now here's second down and three now it's Mahomes again [Applause] and it's going to be another first down as they'll get him to the ground at the lions 36. that one goes for 24 yards [Applause] so the ball moves into lion territory now here's First and Ten at the 36. here's Mahomes to throw short throw hauled in by See it'll be a gain of five and it'll be second down completion was given up but that's why you play zone defense so that you can have people around the ball when it's caught and you don't give up much run after the catch second and five a throw just before the line to game four-yard pickup leaves him with third and one [Applause] this will be play number seven on the drive third of the yard again it's Mahomes [Applause] and it's going to be another first down hold on instead of instead of a third and one run they go piss and they get 12 yards out of it and that's well executed there on third down and I love the confidence that they had to let their tight end try and find some space in the middle of the field right in their quarterback's line of vision and QB is love to make that easy throw and they hooked up there for a first down foreign here's Pacheco was here gonna pause the game for a second looks like there's an injured chief on the field we'll step aside and get an update when we return to KC Pacheco gets it again on second down trying to bounce it outside but he's only able to get it back to the line of scrimmage call it no gain that time as it's going to leave him with a third and about three to go tried to get the edge there the defense just too quick to the ball that's what we call Total Team defense there can't get to the edge no place to move it inside and then allows everyone else to run to the ball and create a Big Time Tackle for no gain for the offense [Applause] it's really tough to create a lot of wonderful debts but that was designed there and they're able to pick up a first down foreign touchdown grab and the Chiefs have moved out in front here in the final minute of the third quarter there was no going through the progressions on that touchdown pass yeah nor was it necessary his receiver won that route early presented himself no reason to wait go ahead and put it on him and score a touchdown [Applause] Is On Target and they will take a seven point lead [Applause] now after the touchdown here's butker on to kick it away there is taken in at the goal line [Applause] and not much happening on the return as he'll get this to about the 23. David Montgomery and the Lions about set to begin this next series he's up over 100 yards and he'll be looking to get in the end zone again has a tremendous nose for her doesn't he the ability to pile up yardage and find the end zone that's the combination you want in your Runner It's a combination any coach wants and we'll see if he can find that end zone once more golf in this Lions offense set for a First and Ten at their own 23. gone [Applause] Off the Mark incomplete and there's a good opportunity just want to ride there a drought pass I guess that's why they call them running backs and not catching bats third quarter of a tight football game as we come up on a second and ten [Applause] [Music] they'll be brought down on the 30-yard line after a gain of six but really that was no surprise there they've been running it well all game and I know goals change all the time but any team will take that type of run each and every time [Applause] these guys have punted four times already and they're staring at a fifth barring a conversion here on third down to throw is gone throw left side complete that's Montgomery now he's going to be out of bounds on what's going to wind up being the final play of quarter number three three quarters have come and gone we'll return with more after this break you're watching the NFL on EA Sports [Applause] see it's the Lions trailing but with possession of the football as we get set to bring you the fourth quarter [Applause] it's the Lions putter now as he'll come on for his fifth kick of the night they had a fair catch signaled for and taken successfully as the offense re-emerges there's wide receiver Kadarius Tony leading him out so far he has the trio of touchdowns obviously it's been a pretty good game for him so this were hockey they'd be throwing their hats out on the ice for the hat trick right I'm not sure exactly what you do in the NFL except applaud and continue to hope you see a little bit more of this what a tremendous game you want to start a new tradition what can we throw on the field oh no we'll throw your mic out there a lot of fans would like that cut his mic off three touchdowns so far here's Pacheco to begin the drive [Music] and it's second and 11. so fourth quarter a nice run there to start this drive Charles what do you think the split will be here between run and pass well partner I think it'll lean towards the run but this is also not a time where you just totally do that you still have to possess the ball move the sticks and keep the clock moving as well so they'll run their offense but yeah when they have a chance inside a receipt down saloni able to drop him that time for his second sack of the evening now Charles dealing with the third and long they'll have to try to go back to the air again and this time avoid the sack certainly hard to try to establish momentum when all you're doing is going backwards not protecting the passer and he gets dumped on his backside throwing his Mahomes on third and that's James and he'll be taken somebody down he did have first yardage that third down conversion good for 23. and that pickup number first down that's going to leave a mark because they really needed to stop them there didn't they it's so frustrating defensively your play away from getting that football back here down late tough now they've got to find a way to create a turnover or take away otherwise this one will probably get away from them First and Ten here's Mahomes oh and a heck of an effort there as he'll make the diving catch two chunk plays in a row the last one was over 20 yards and so is this one these guys are running offense like you drive the pedal is down stomp down how about that back-to-back completions they are rolling so much for being conservative and running that football headed straight it's Pacheco that one opened up for him well as he'll take this down to the 26-yard line they get 10 more there and I believe that'll be enough for another first down it will and I'm guessing you'd say this is kind of the key here grind out some yardage work on that clock see if you can continue to take it down definitely you want to bleed things out at this point right continue to possess the football gain some yardage and put the onus on the defense didn't have to use timeouts what are they gonna do to stop you you taking but he does he assigns right around the 10-yard line 17 more yards on that one as they keep the drive rolling just picking up yardage and bunches here these last few plays they have moved right down the field and just like that they're gonna be set up with a first and goal so first and goal six points here would go a long way toward wrapping this one up shotgun snap to Mahomes sideline throw it's complete and a nice job there of keeping the toes inbounds that'll bring out second and goal after the gain of five was that a receiver actually it was it was a running back who was a receiver on the play Ike's been spending time in the receiver drills getting his feet down well those guys out of the backfield they got to be good angel with their feet he showed the agility there with a toe tap no doubt about it down there it makes this a two-score game but as we've seen no lead nobody safe in this defense you want to get involved involved one big play from you that the game for us butker on for the p-a-t and the lead is up to 14. so an eight-play Drive covering 80 yards and it winds up with the Chiefs hitting Pay Dirt [Applause] now after the touchdown here's butker on to kick it away here's Raymond bringing it out and only able to get again for another look at this Lions offense see if they can put this Drive In The End Zone Charles because it's been a little bit of a rough go at times they've had to punt the football a ton in this ball game because of stalled out drives so are you saying that you're kind of tired of seeing the punter run out there and do his thing during this game is that what you're trying to say well I mean I'm okay with it I have a feeling that this offense they don't want to see the punter again and frankly the punter doesn't want to run out there anymore himself he would love to see his offense put together a drive and give his leg a rest he'll be dropped at the 25 after a gain of six you got the big lead defensively willing to give him that underneath stuff right and this is why you work on your tackling tackle them after the catch inbounds keep the clock running just go ahead and bleed the game out that way [Applause] to throw on second down is gone that'll be caught by Saint Brown and Saint Brown going to have the Lions first down as the tackle made up near the 35. go off to Saint Brown for the Detroit first down good yardage on the completion there and when they look at the scoreboard they do understand a field goal is not going to do him any good my guess they're going to press the ball downfield as far as possible try and throw it into the end zone and get a score because they know they've got to get that done and get the ball back as quickly as possible brought down by Willie gay not a huge carry there on first down but not all of them will be but still all in all a positive play for the offense it's all about picking up at least a few to set up what you're going to do here on second down from the 38 now here's second down and seven the gun golf [Applause] toward the sideline and look at that catch dragging the toes and that's going to be a first down well done they give him 14 yards that time and a fresh set of downs and with that last play he's now up over that 300 yard Mark and in today's NFL it almost feels routine and I hate that when you talk about a 300 yard passing game to me 300 yards still signifies excellence and he's achieved that in this performance so now First and Ten in Chiefs territory at the 48-yard line they run Montgomery and if there was a lane there it closed up quickly as he stopped for No Gain second down his carries tonight they're getting up there so maybe one of those every now and then is understandable I would agree with that understandable every now and then sometimes you come back and you fake it to him and go play action but other times you say okay they got him on that one we'll come back to him in another carry I'm gone Off the Mark too far out in front and it's incomplete the coverage keyed in on him since that last completion his way he earned a little more attention on that route and that made it a lot tougher to get a clean throw as well now play number seven of the drive as they're looking at a third and ten now it's gone and he finds Montgomery complete and he will get him down a couple yards shy of the first down marker a nice tackle coming up from his free safety spot eight yards on the screen there not enough and it'll be fourth down and that's a play that's not uncommon on Third and long because the offense just opened it somehow they can get a guy in space and follow some blockers downfield does a pretty nice job there getting a few yards but he ends up getting stopped before you get the first down [Applause] and this is good from 57 yards out that was bombs away right there and that will get the disadvantage now back down to 211. these kickers now it's like we've taken for granted kicks like that used to be such a big deal and now you just expect them to make it yeah you're exactly right and we shouldn't take them for granted but I have a theory about it you want to hear it yeah they are more athletic now than ever before it's about kickers Trace their backgrounds Trace their histories you'll find that they were big time athletes all along but their kicking was so prevalent that we made them Specialists and now those 50-plus yarders seem easy for some reason here are the Lions now as they line up and kick this one away from a couple yards deep he'll bring it out of the end zone and the decision to come out of the end zone is going to cost him five yards as he's taken down right at the 20. [Applause] as the offense re-emerges there's wide receiver Kadarius Tony leading him out they have to like what they've gotten from him in this game think about the accumulation of catches hey the yards per catch now because you're getting more than a first down every time he's touching the ball this is the kind of game you want when you're able to throw it out watch absolutely over 100 yards has the eight catches the Holmes will lead the Chiefs up First and Ten at their own 20-yard line they'll start this start this about four it's second down that's it that's what you want Straight Ahead positive gain just keep that clock ticking they'll come up second and six now from the 24. and that was going to be off Target and incomplete I see the surprise in your face there partner that is a rare incompletion from him he's been on point this entire game he has percentage completion Wise Way up not that time foreign the offense on third down tonight they've been really good converting seven of their ten tries this will be third and six throwing now is Mahomes now they go screen it's complete and he'll be taken down but he does have first down yardage that one goes for 13 yards and it moves it sticks and when you have success throwing the football Hill cliche becomes true The Playbook opens up wide and these green passes they become even more difficult to stop [Applause] so from the 36 now First and Ten now here's Mahomes and his throw here's incomplete yes sir how about an atta boy there on first down got his hand in and knocked it away they'll try again from the 36 on second and ten [Music] Mahomes to throw once more and he comes back with one complaint five yards now it's third and five they'll need five on this play to move the sticks throw James has got it complained and he will have a Chiefs first down they needed five there on third down he winds up getting seven he's been the go-to guy they needed a big play there on third down went his way it worked out doesn't matter whether they've scouted it or that they think he's going to get the ball he has a knack for finding his way open and completing the connection [Applause] over the middle that's called in by Tony they showed off a nice Juke of the defender before the next wave could bring him down but normally you might say start running the football you've got the lead here in the fourth quarter but the way that they've passed it with such success I don't know maybe keep throwing it yeah I think you brought up something that goes against conventional wisdom right in this stage of the game you would think you would switch to a running attack but you're exactly right they're throwing it so well throughout the game and trusting this quarterback I think he continued to do so that backs him up one yard and brings up third down hey a lot of points have been scored in this game against them but tally that one on the side of the defense do you think maybe possibly it could be a little bit of a changer for them maybe not a game changer but a little bit of a momentum one that maybe they can string together some pretty good plays and slow them down but he cannot connect from a defensive perspective they had exactly what you want anytime they want to throw the football there's pressure on the quarterback they were getting after him and they tightened down on the receivers and forced the incompletion so look at this here's the field goal unit coming out and he is gonna need to bomb this one foreign Charles All Things Considered I guess that's not a critical Miss at this stage is it no but still everything helps when you're trying to finish off a ball game and you're right not critical in terms of the scoreboard and the team but the guy with the golden foot he knows he's only as good as his last kick golf in this Lions offense set for a First and Ten right at the 50-yard line from the 50 it's gone he's got a complete to give and he'll be brought down at the 27-yard line 23 yards the final tally a good start there on this fourth quarter Drive they need more of what we just saw down a couple of Cup scores there's still time all right it's not like you know they're totally out of it but they have to score quickly and they're going to need some big time plays Chunk plays explosive plays they need yardage on each snap now he dumps this off over the middle and he'll be brought down at the 21 just shy of the 20 in the red zone so the completion good for six yards and that'll make it second down and a nice gain and a broken tackle along the way and really we shouldn't be surprised should we that's what Runners do especially the best ones they break tackles and gain extra yardage there's gone throw that side caught by the corner the pickup goes for 13 and sets him up first and goal this offense can certainly move quickly when they want to three plays three pass completions in the blink of an eye they've got it first and goal almost felt like a lightning bolt hit in this game didn't it for them to get downfield that quickly and now first the goal expect him a tackle right here on this play throwing again is gone Chris Jones his second sack of the night first and goal looked like things were set up nicely and now all of a sudden on second and gold Charles a big challenge ahead of them and you have to know when you're this close to the goal line things are going to happen faster so you've got to get the ball out quick not gonna have much time in the pocket before the Defenders bring pressure going underneath Gibbs has it and he's blocked down just outside of the 10 at the 11. and in his size he's a smaller back you can get him to football he can kind of get lost make someone Miss it's good for him yeah it's great for him I like what you said there sometimes he gets lost in the traffic a little bit but get him out in the open field into some space that's plays to his strengths the best and keeps him out of it where all the big boys are you know make him make someone Miss in the open field all right now golf on Third and goal and this is caught now for a late touchdown so hold everything here this one's not over yet okay game on don't go anywhere yet you get a one score game now probably going to rely on the onside kick coming up yeah they have to it's not a high percentage play but it's better than not having a chance at all and that's when you put your leapers and your flyers on one side get that high hop and hope that one of the guys can come up with it and on the other side you get that hands team ready no doubt about it and this is car they got it and that could be an important two points that gets him back within a field goal so the deficit now three after the huge conversion but they need to get the football back so this is where special teams really comes into play because getting the ball back it starts with this next kickoff how do they get downfield either jar loose or get the ball back themselves that's going to be key for them so just a three-point game now as they send this one away and they'll start this drive just across the 30. pretty nice work on the return the Chiefs offense now making their way back onto the field well they can smell Victory partner they can see it on the horizon but certainly we're not done yet here defense still has three timeouts and obviously this is a very slim lead they're holding on to and let's face it the easiest way to get this done Challenger ground game Challenger offensive line your tight ends your receivers anyone who's going to lay down a block don't let there be penetration because they're going to stack the line of scrimmage and maybe bring extra people to the ball if you can do that run out the clock life will be good but if you really want to gamble a little bit a quick play action quick throw might be able to get it done just make sure it's not incomplete and stop the clock I have to imagine this will be on the ground as well as they come up second and seven another run on second down trying to cover up and he'll get this one up to about the 39 here the Lions now going to use the second of their timeouts as they'll head to the sideline and talk over what to do next they'll come to the line needing only two yards to gain the first here they'll try for the First with Pacheco the Lions quickly now going to use the last of their timeouts yeah this is going to depend on the spot but I believe he might be a few inches short [Music] here's the chief's Potter now as he's on here to put it away so here's Golf and the here we go maybe the biggest kick of the game forthcoming four seconds to go this would send us to overtime and his kick is good and in the fourth quarter this game is tied and we need overtime to decide this one after four quarters of play we're all even the extra session in a moment this is the NFL on EA Sports It's a little teaching moment here overtime rules remind us how this goes partner okay so in the past we had sudden death first team to score wins but no longer now if the team receives the ball scores a touchdown they win the game if they kick a field goal though or don't score the other team gets a possession and after both teams get a possession then we're into sudden death first team to score wins the game so four quarters couldn't decide it and it'll be the Chiefs who get the foot football first in this overtime session this fielded right at the goal line and taken down just past the 20 at about the 21-yard line here's the Kansas City offense now as they get set to take over all set up for him right now Charles opening possession of overtime they've got the football they also obviously have this home crowd behind him in a big way they give that extra energy from them but they've got to be careful not to let that adrenaline get away from them and play too fast or create errors of their own making use that energy embrace it but make sure they Channel it the right way they've got a chance to go down field score a touchdown and end this game and he's going to be stacked up right at the line of scrimmage nothing there for him second down as usual the Hallmark of a good run defense linebackers making plays near the line of scrimmage absolutely nowhere to run there so after the run for No Gain here's second and ten first throw of overtime from Mahomes that'll be caught by James and he's upended after a gain of four up to the 25-yard line and we've seen him have success earlier on with the ball in his hands because he has to get it in space and make a play kind of a receiver but that time they closed on him quickly and held him to a short game opening drive of overtime and now facing a third down at six big play coming up Mahomes gonna throw [Applause] he'll be taken down but he does have first down yardage that'll go as a pickup of eight no surprise to see his sideline Fired Up by that big play heck we're fired up and we're supposed to be neutral that's a quarterback putting his body on the line to fight and just barely get the first down when he does something like that it gets everyone ready to lay it all out there and try and match his intensity Alma Holmes on the bootleg that's complete to Tony call it a gain of three on the play and that'll bring up second down so a little dinking and Duncan that they're doing it at some point is it appropriate to maybe take a shot it is if you feel good about it but otherwise you do what a coach told me a long time ago take what they give you but make them tackle in other words get into one of your guys in space if he makes someone miss that could turn into the big play you're looking for meanwhile Mahomes throw on target to James his huge night it just continues as he's now north of 200 yards receiving they go back to that well he's had a great game defensively they haven't been able to stop him same thing here in overtime and sometimes that goes to the play caller's ego because a lot of times you have so many different plays you want to call but when you spot a matchup that's working for you or a player that has the hot hand keep giving it to him that tells me you're mature as a play caller and it's working for them in over [Applause] he helped out a guy can turn it loose and boy he rifled one in there on that one not much run after catch but it worked really well ball of the 47-yard line here's a second and four and again it's Mahomes foreign seven catches for him now and his last one the first down Charles you get into these overtime situations that's not a bad guy to dial into well when you have to have plays especially in a spot as you just described we're an OT you've got to go to the guys you can trust and you know are going to make the plays well they say it's not the x's and the O's can you call a wide receiver screen no matter how many blockers you get in front of the guy that catches the ball there's still an aspect of the guy catching it turning into a runner breaking tackles and creating his own yardage and he just did on that play [Applause] and it's going to be another first down is a 21. they pick up 12 on the play there and they move the chains shaping up to be a very efficient opening drive here in overtime and can you feel the tension building because I'm feeling it all right I've got the I've got the sweaty Palms here with each play because of the enormity of what's going on each play means so much in overtime and they're handling it well as this drive continues foreign 's firing complete and this will be a gain of six when it's all said and done down to the 15 from the 21. now it's Mahomes again soon through the air in overtime overtime four quarters quarters to a game like this all the way through who's going to win it we're getting overtime great for us a lot of tension on the field very tough not a surprise it ended with a passing touchdown that's the way we play in the NFL but the execution is pretty darn good [Applause] extra point by butker Is On Target and they will take a seven point lead potatoes [Applause] now after the touchdown here's Buckner on to kick it away no run back here for Raymond this will be a Touchback Detroit's offense ready to take over and last time able to get three it's not what they wanted they wanted six but they got at least something they mustered something out of the drive you've described it not ideal but they'll take it anything to put some points on the board but this time on offense they don't want to see the field goal kicker Trot on the field they want that ball in the end there they'll be going for six golf in this Lions offense set for a First and Ten at their 25-yard line bringing the pressure yet again that's his third sack here tonight he found his way into the backfield and he simply would not be denied but they said that life's all about opportunities and that holds true when you're playing defense as well how about him seeing that chance making the most of it did a great job of wrapping him up and bringing him down well meanwhile a pass this should have been intercepted but it winds up falling incomplete I'd like to come because that's all right attractive from the moment it left the quarterback's hand that's just where he needed to be he did not get away an incomplete pass on that last play and that means they'll need to come up with something here on third down to throw is gone well this is taken in it's complete a huge play there in overtime 45 yards and how about that in a game is at just about everything has that for an answer remember in the past this game would be over already but that's a huge play there to give him a fighting chance to go down and possibly tie this game foreign so how about that for a chain mover they're all the way down inside the 40 now for First and Ten now gone his throw incomplete so many times we talk about conference we're just talking about a Defender running with a receiver but a big part of it is understanding where the football is finding it in this case when it arrived it wasn't a surprise and he was able to bat it away an incomplete pass on first down that leads to a second and ten [Applause] has become a bigger and bigger part of the passing game in the NFL but if you drop the football that position can get swapped out with a wide receiver in that spot or running back in that spot there are other ways they can go if you're not gonna catch the ball and that's not just his first drop his second drop of the game get off throwing again he lets this one fly toward the back of the end zone they took their shot but it's going to bring up fourth down s during this game this scheduled Revenge right there for the secondary they've been shredded throughout the game and finally forced it in completion they go ahead and snap it gone [Applause] it's incomplete they cannot convert then they turn it over the Lions turned away on fourth down and the Chiefs defense comes up with a stop so it's a win for the Chiefs here and no surprise it was Patrick Mahomes who really led the charge yeah this was a game for the ages wasn't it six touchdown passes he had this offense running to its absolute Peak efficiency and I tell you what that's as good a game as you'll see at the quarterback position that'll do it for us for Charles
