hey guys so while i was out of the house my sister came to visit and started cooking something while watching a video on her macbook pro i then got a frantic phone call from her and came home to this apparently she spilled a bottle of cooking oil on it and became down bad but i'm up good now cause this is free content [Music] let's take it apart to see how far the cooking oil penetrated it now before you ask yes this was my old macbook pro i gave to her after i upgraded you can tell by the stickers still on it that's also now covered in oil it's only been several months since i gave it to her and while i was working on it she had to go back to her old macbook air which was also mine before i handed it down to her if i didn't upgrade macbook so often this family would fall apart as you can see oil had seeped through the keyboard and got into many of the components she is down bad so much oil that the us military is knocking on my door at the moment she did have a keyboard cover on it so it did provide some protection i tried my best to wipe off all the oil i could see with rubbing alcohol but the problem is there is definitely more oil on the other side of the components but after looking up a guide on how to disassemble the macbook i deemed it to be too complex for my skills and put it back together remember my main profession is destroying technology not fixing it so i decided to take it to a third party repair shop but the question is does it still turn on and the answer is yes it does this is due to oil being non-conductive but it looks like some oil got into the bottom part of the screen let's see what the third party repair shop says they told me that this was the first time anyone brought in a laptop that had cooking oil spilled on it but they told me they could do their best to clean it out for a fee of course and it would take about one to two weeks after dropping off the laptop i went to best buy to consider if i should buy my sister the new m1 macbook air but decided against it because it will be awarding her for causing an oil spill one to two weeks pass and i go to pick up the macbook the total charge for the water damage repair was 129 dollars also on the same day i went to pick up the macbook i also got a cheap mac mini for my collection or maybe this should be my sister's new replacement mac when i got it home i plugged it in and it still booted up but the first thing i noticed was the little bit of oil on the screen had turned the screen into a picasso painting can i sell this laptop for millions as abstract art now but that wasn't the only problem the keyboard still felt sticky and when i unplugged it there was now oil on the charger so i went to town with a toothbrush some rubber alcohol and some compressed air to finish it off i also had to do the same with my current macbook pro because i was switching between charging the two and i didn't notice the oil on the charger plug at first unfortunately no matter how many times i scrubbed oil kept on coming out of the usb-c ports i also noticed that the bottom was bulging because the repair shop had put the laptop back together wrong so i had to take it apart to fix that and inspecting the components there was still a decent amount of oil on the motherboard and it looks like the warranty was voided if that wasn't obvious yet i decided to take it back to the repair shop and asked if they could attempt to try to get more oil out they said they would try again for free and they also mentioned that their process was not to take it completely apart to clean each component but to pour rubbing alcohol through the laptop let it dry then keep on repeating that process guess it was too complicated for them to take it apart also thanks apple after another one to two weeks i went to go pick it up again and the repair guy said that they tried their best but there was still a decent amount of oil in it and when i got home that was true since it was still leaking oil through the track pad i understand that they tried their best again not many people spill a lot of something that repels water on their laptops before if i take it to an official apple repair shop they probably would have told me to buy a new laptop because it would probably cost way more to replace all the oiled covered parts actually that's some pretty good advice that i should have just followed in the first place so i did presenting the new refurbish to save money m1 macbook air ah despite being refurbished it still has that sweet sweatshop smell but this isn't for my sister it's been proven she can't handle cooking oil this is for me what macbook am i replacing with it my travel laptop aka the 2017 12-inch macbook i take with me when i travel which it hasn't experienced for a while now basically it's the bedroom macbook for when i need a macbook to do things in the bedroom but i'm too lazy to go to the office to get my main one that's what this newly refurbished m1 macbook air will replace and this 12 inch macbook would go to my sister is it a downgrade from the macbook pro she spilled oil on yes but at least the screen won't look abstract and the whole thing won't be gushing oil is it an upgrade from our 2015 macbook air maybe but whatever everybody wins and by that i mean me up good the repair shop did provide some value i'm gonna retire this macbook to a room decoration and i don't want it leaking too much oil everywhere and so with that thank you guys for watching comment like and subscribe and i'll see you guys later and no i'm not gonna destroy it so many memories were made on this thing how dare you
