mistaking uh uh welcome rose i could tell by the comment that you may be joining us uh for the first time pasta catano masimova comes online when we have played the texology began when we have played empty screen should not trouble you um i i i'm there just getting ready before we come online so we are reading uh luke chapter 11 verse 1 to 13 and it says now it came to pass as he was praying in a certain place when he sees that one of his disciples said to him lord teach us to pray as john also taught his disciples so he said to them when you pray say our father in heaven hallowed be your name your kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us day by day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us and do not lead us into temptation but deliver us from the evil one and he said to them which of you shall have a friend and go to him at midnight and say to him friend lend me three loaves for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey and i have nothing to give and set before him and he will answer from within and say do not trouble me the door is now shut and my children are with me in bed i cannot rise and give it to you i say to you though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him many as he needs so i say to you ask and it will be given to you seek and you will find knock and it will be opened to you for everyone who asks receives and he who seeks finds and to him who knocks it will be open if a son asks for bread from any father among you will you give him a stone or if he asks for a fish shall you then give him give him a serpent instead of a fish or if he asks for an egg will you offer him a scorpion if you then being evil know how to give good gifts to your children how much more will your father who is in heaven give you the holy spirit to those who ask of him the lord always adds a blessing to the reading of his word let's pray together father in the name of jesus we thank you for the gift of the word now that we have read this word we pray that the word becomes life in us that we may not only know it in words in our minds but then we may experience it in its power in the fullness of life that you have given to us this we pray through christ jesus our lord and savior amen now the bible here in the book of luke um luke is one of the the the interesting authors of the new testament that i like there is not much that we know about him except that in the book of acts he tells us that he was a medical doctor by profession a physician and as i have raised this before that although today doctors are highly respected individuals in the days of luke particularly in israel doctors were actually not that highly regarded they were highly regarded in greece they were highly regarded in rome but they were not so highly regarded when it came to uh israel this is because at times doctors physicians had to deal with diseases which according to the book of leviticus if you touch the person with that disease you were unclean so doctors put themselves at risk in that while they were trying to help the community they were also becoming unclean they were in many times not permitted to enjoy worship to enjoy synagogue services or even to enter the temple because they would be unclean because of a particular patient that they had touched or someone who had died in their presence and so this profession of a medical doctor which is so well glamorized today and so well and loved and it is a good thing to love it it wasn't always such a positive career path in israel it was really associated with a lot of spiritual and cleanliness because of the clients that the the doctor had to see luke was a doctor but he tells us also more he tells us that his mother was a jew and his father was greek and so we know that um luke was not of pure blood and israelite he was in many ways like i am i am not a of pure blood of one particular nation i am quite a mixture of of of many nations in in my uh upbringing and my parents come from different tribes as well and luke was the same he was not 100 percent israelite he grew up some have suspected some scholars have suggested he grew up in greece or in rome for the first many years of his life he then moved to israel later on one of the reasons why scholars will say so is that when we read the book of luke and the book of acts remember the book of acts was not written by paul it was written by luke one of the things we see in the book of luke and in the book of acts is that the geography is not always accurate sometimes he puts certain cities of israel let me just say a few kilometers off from where they are supposed to be and he sometimes will use very uncommon names for particular cities and towns it indicates someone who was not familiar with the israelite uh territory or someone who arrived when they were already older and unlike someone who was born in israel they understood um the the layout the topology the geography of israel quite well but also this background of luke helps us to understand the way he writes his gospel because you see among the four gospel authors luke records more stories about jesus and women jesus and poor people and this is because the poor and the women were the outcasts of society at that time the poor and the women were the rejects of society at that time and because he was not a jew one hundred percent he had experienced what it is like to be treated as an outcast to be treated as someone who does not belong that is why look focuses a lot on other outcasts in order to inform all of them that in jesus we all belong it doesn't matter where we were born it doesn't matter whether our blood is pure or mixed as long as we go to jesus we will find belonging that is why also luke does something different to matthew you know when matthew tells the genealogy of jesus he starts with abraham the father of the israelites but did you see what luke does luke starts with adam the father of all humanity because luke wants to prove jesus is not for the jews alone jesus is for all of us jesus descends not just from abraham he descends all the way from adam and of course he then adds adam who was the son of god in order to connect that jesus is the son of god so that we understand that everyone belongs in jesus everyone belongs in jesus it is the same message that i have been sent by god to keep reminding all of us that is why i keep saying to you this space called the word and life ministry it is not for any denomination catholics belong here adventists belong here there are baptists here there are ludeans here there are zionists here there are people who don't go to any church who inbox me and they say we watch the world in life ministry because we want to make it clear everyone belongs in christ you don't have to be a member of a particular church to make it to heaven you don't have to have a particular skin color or gender or race or glass or anything in order to belong to jesus the only thing required to belong to jesus believe and repent then you will be saved and you will have your belonging it is really that simple now look writing this gospel he then comes to us in chapter 11 records to us this portion he tells us that jesus was praying and while jesus was praying the disciples were waiting for him and when he finished praying one of the disciples comes to jesus and says to him lord teach us to pray lord teach us to pray as jesus was praying it must have been a very interesting thing for the disciples watching and listening the disciples observed something you see the disciples were jews they were hebrews and they prayed five times a day why would the men who pray five times a day say to jesus teach us how to pray what have they been doing all along they have been praying five times a day from childhood but now the bible says they were watching they were listening to jesus praying now it means whatever they heard whatever they saw that made them realize something is missing in our prayer life something about it the way we pray is not giving us access to power like he is praying something about the way he prays produces more answers from god than what we are getting something about the way jesus prayed would explain how jesus would die something about the way he prayed explained how he raised the dead something about the way he prayed explained how he healed the sick something about the way he prayed explained how he forgave the woman caught in adultery there was something about his prayer that brought two worlds together the world of ability and the world of acceptance what am i talking about you see when jesus prayed he had power to raise the dead when jesus prayed he had power to open the blind eyes when jesus prayed he could multiply loaves of bread and feed thousands yet the same jesus whose prayer gave him so much power is the same jesus who when he was dying instead of praying for power to avoid death he prayed for power to welcome death oh you've got to listen to that one something about the way jesus prayed gave him power when necessary and gave him peace when necessary it appears something about the way jesus prayed could give him answers when he wanted answers but could also give him peace when the answer was difficult to live with the same jesus who prayed and wrote and raised people from the dead is the same jesus who prayed and said if it is your will i accept this cup the same jesus who would pray and in his prayer he would say son your sins are forgiven and raised the lame man from the ground was the same man who through prayer was saying elohim my god my god why have you forsaken me something about the way jesus prayed did not there was something about the way jesus prayed that didn't just give him power when things are happening his way but it gave him power to also trust in god when things were hard and difficult something about the prayer life of jesus shocked the disciples they were watching him pray and they were amazed how does all this happen in a single prayer how does prayer give you what you want at the same time give you peace when you don't get what you want how does it work how does prayer do both and the problem is they were watching it they were watching it in jesus in jesus prayer was doing all of it and so the disciples realized no man it looks like we haven't been praying it looks like we don't know what prayer is this guy one moment he prays and he raises the dead the next moment people are stoning him he doesn't pray for angels to defend him he doesn't pray for angels to deliver him even when he was tempted by the devil he didn't pray to escape he simply asked for power to go through it how how does prayer do that because you see i suspect the disciples were like me when i am praying i'm not giving god an option to do anything other than what i say and now i think that disciples are looking they are thinking to themselves this man this man's prayer life it is a mysterious thing because for the things he wants he gets and for the things he should not want instead of trying to avoid them he simply has the strength to go through them what kind of a prayer life is this and that is the question can there be a prayer life that allows me to be blessed and get what i want and get what i have asked for at the same time can that prayer life give me strength when i don't get what i'm asking for give me peace when i go through difficulty how do i balance the two when do i know that this is the time to get when do i know that this is the time to make peace what is the outcome how do i know it and the disciples realize we will need to ask him to teach us how to pray so that we may get these things so that when we pray we also may heal the sick we also may raise the dead but at the same time we also shouldn't come a time that it is time to die we may pray for strength and indeed did you notice all the disciples all the apostles they had raised the dead but when it was time for them to die none of them none of them prayed to be delivered they all welcomed death which means it worked when they asked jesus whatever he taught them it worked they learned to pray like him they learned to pray like jesus and receive the power that is similar to the power that head and that jesus had when he was praying they say to him teach us to pray like john the baptist taught his disciples to pray so now we learn that there are true teachers who have touched their disciples to pray john the baptist also taught his disciples to pray it appears then that the forerunner and the rana they understood that prayer had to be more than just the five religious times you see it wasn't the five times that was the issue it appears that at the heart of it was whether praying was a routine praying was a liturgy praying was a repetition a prayer was a real conversation that tackles real life issues between the prayer person and the god receiving the prayer so jesus begins with the lord's prayer and this becomes difficult because for as long as i can remember in my own christianity i can't remember how many prayer seminars i've attended and what is very confusing about prayer seminars is that you have everyone tell you you must pray this way and not that way and when we look here which i think is the simplest and most direct teaching that requires simply to understand its richness for our own prayer life if you look at the lord's prayer which is where we begin i will not focus so much on analyzing each and every line rather i will want to talk about the spirit of the prayer and you will see when we get to the end why we will do so the first thing you notice is that the lord's prayer is a community prayer it has no i it has no me it has our we us it is a prayer for the community and then you begin to notice have you ever noticed whenever jesus needed to help someone he would pray but whenever jesus needed help himself he never prayed did you notice that did you notice that when the crowd wanted to stone jesus he didn't pray he escaped did you notice that when the clouds were where was were spitting on him when the clouds were taking him to the crucifixion did you notice he didn't pray for himself instead he prayed for them he prayed that they might be forgiving have you noticed jesus always prayed when we need help but whenever jesus needed help he simply accepted his situation what a strange thing in fact when you read the number of prayers where jesus prayed for others and you look at the prayers where jesus prayed for himself did you notice that there was only once yes the only time jesus prayed for himself asking for something to be done for him was when he said father if it is possible take this cup away from me that was the only time in john 17 when he prays did you notice that he is not praying for something to be done for him no no no where he says father i pray that we might be one it was now a celebration prayer because he was at the end of his mission he was saying thank you that you've been with me all along now i am about to finish the work you sent me to do but when it comes to asking he only asked for himself once but the rest of the prayers were always for us this now explains why jesus teaches us a community prayer i love this it appears that jesus is saying to us the more you pray for others they pray for you you will be covered in their prayers you cover them in your prayers learn a prayer life where you are showing concern for god's people where you you you deliberately put an end to self in in in the seventh day adventist church vernacular hymn books there is a hymn there him 124 not i but christ not i but christ this is the prayer that jesus is lifting that when you pray first defeat your own desire to always put yourself fast when you pray defeat this self-preservation mentality when you pray defeat this i have to get what i want and jesus says rather part of a community jesus is not saying don't pray for yourself he is saying pray for the community in other words listen very carefully don't pray for yourself what you are not willing to pray for the community you want god to make you a millionaire then let that be your prayer for your community you want god to heal you then let that be your prayer for your community what is jesus teaching us are your prayers prayers of jealousy are you praying so that god may set you higher than others or are you praying so that others may prosper together with you when you kneel are you kneeling so that you may use god to prove a point against us or are you kneeling so that we may all enjoy the power of god jesus prayed community prayers and he teaches us now pray the community prayer and the question is lord then where am i if i pray for the community where am i jesus says you are in the community you are part of the community that you are praying for that is why as you pray you cannot ask for things that you yourself are not willing to get do you understand what that means hence jesus says forgive us our sins as we forgive our debtors why because jesus is saying if if being forgiving is good for you then it must be good for the whole community you can't come to god and say forgive me but not my community no if you deserve forgiveness then surely the community deserves forgiveness it is a very very challenging thing that jesus is taking us through community prayer community prayer now did you also notice in his community prayer it is not for your relatives it is not for your family he said our father give us he didn't say give my family bread did you notice why why did jesus do that simply because it is easy to define your community based on who you love but when the community is us we our suddenly suddenly even me then you don't like i'm included you can't exclude me once you say our father you can't exclude me no matter how much you hate me if you have prayed our father you can no longer exclude me i am in your prayer whatever you are praying for it will happen to me as well what a what a challenging thing jesus is doing jesus doesn't teach you and listen very carefully jesus is not saying don't pray for your family no but if your family is part of the community what's the problem because when you pray for the community you've prayed for your family when you've prayed for your family you should be praying for the community because it's we our us our father give us we forgive and did you notice that in this prayer the only individual is god the rest is a community we pray to one god but we cannot come one on one we come one for many to one i come i come for the many i come to the only god i go to the only god to present the many in my one voice so that one god may answer many through me what a challenging thing jesus is setting up about prayer and again jesus is not saying don't pray for your husband don't pray for your children don't pray for your friends jesus is saying don't just pray for the community that has a name family friend spouse jesus says pray for the community of god pray for the other pray for the entire community that depends on god and the whole world depends depends on god our father give us forgive us as we forgive our us we our us we not i me and then they them there is no i there is no them is our us we the second thing i notice in the lord's prayer did you notice that the lord's prayer is structured according to the ten commandments let's walk this journey together our father who art in heaven thou shalt have no other gods besides me the prayer is the fulfillment of the commandment hallowed be thy name do not take the name of the lord your god in vain the prayer fulfills the commandment and jesus continues thy king don't come remember the sabbath to keep it holy because on it god came on the sabbath god arrived thy kingdom come keep the sabbath holy because the sabbath is the coming of god the sabbath is the arrival of god so when we say thy kingdom come then we keep the sabbath in order to fulfill the coming kingdom then he continues to say thy will be done honor your father and your mother because will is authority if you want to honor god whom you have never seen thy will be done you shall reveal it when you honor your parents because in honoring them you fulfill their will and by so doing you taste the will of god are you noticing these parallels jesus continues he then says to them thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven then listen give us this day our daily bread thou shall not steal because god is the provider i have no reason to take from others i have been given by god and because god gives i will not steal i will not covet because the things i desire god gives and so to pray is to fulfill the commandment so when i say to god give me today my daily bread i then distance myself from stealing because i've already prayed to be given bread why must i steal my prayer contradicts the commandment i must be given this day my daily bread and he continues to say and forgive us our debts forgive us our sins as we forgive our debtors then the commandments say to us very important things do not commit murder do not commit adultery and do not covet what belongs to your neighbor and jesus here says in everything you do forgive others as the father has forgiven you and in the commandment he says do not murder now this is very important because it is easy to think of murder as murder when someone is killing you what we have not thought about is the murder as the revenge i deserve for what has been done to me that is the challenge because these three commandments murder adultery and to covet they are the three that inspire us to be revengeful the most these three are the ones that inspire us to seek revenge no one wants revenge like a person whose family member was killed no one wants revenge like someone whose spouse has been cheating on them if you want to know people who want to revenge it's those whose loved ones have been killed it's those whose spouses have cheated if you want to know people who want revenge it's the employees when your colleagues who covet your work sabotage your work and you want revenge you want to destroy them as much as they tried to destroy you and jesus says forgive forgive if you want to be forgiven then understand that forgiveness is for the whole community it cannot be yours alone it must be for the community as i leave the lord's prayer then jesus tells them a story to help them understand prayer he says which of you having a friend goes to the friend at midnight and says to the friend please open i have another friend who arrived and i have no food please give me three loaves of bread so that i may give to my friend did you just notice here did you notice what happened a friend went to a friend to ask for bread to feed another friend community prayer a friend woke up at midnight to go wake up another friend because another friend came at midnight what is happening a friend came at midnight no one arrives at midnight in good times you understand that when someone arrives at midnight it means they are in trouble makes sense midnight represents trouble a friend in trouble arrived to border a friend this friend was touched by the trouble of the other friend and they went to another friend to wake that friend up about the troubles of the other friend oh man you've got to love what jesus is doing here jesus is very clear prayer is intervention for others prayer is worry for others why am i praying here i am god i've come to you god my friend to tell you about my other friend whose marriage is in trouble knock knock god it's me i've come for another friend you are my friend god but i am here to tell you another friend sent me a whatsapp saying they have no food this is a conversation of friends not about each other but about what the other friend needs i am in pain at midnight why because my other friends are in pain so i go to my only true friend to tell him about my other friends and what they are going through i have come to the greatest friend to tell him about my friends who are in trouble to tell him about my friends who are unemployed my friends who've got cancer my friends whose families are falling apart my friends whose children are in drugs i have come to tell god about my friends in tanzania who've lost their president i've come to tell god about my friends in the united states in brazil whose countries are perishing because of covet i've come to god to talk to him about my friends in zimbabwe whose economy needs their help is there no coffee in my country there is is there no paid economy in my country there is did i not just lose a king i did but i have come to god not to talk about me i am a friend waking up a friend because another friend is in trouble it is a community thing to pray it is for all of us to pray jesus says this friend if they say to you i am already sleeping with my children jesus says even if they don't open for the sake of friendship they will open for the sake of your persistence then jesus says but god is not like those friends god wouldn't even sleep god wouldn't even sleep psalm 121 i will lift up my eyes to the hills from whence cometh my help my help cometh from the lord who made the heavens and the earth he said he will not suffer thy foot to be moved the lord which keepeth thee he shall not slumber nor sleep know now that the lord is thy helper the lord is thy shade you shall be under his right hand in the parable the friend sleeps and jesus says how much more god because god is a friend who never sleeps god is a friend who's always waiting for prayers to come in which means i can go to god anytime and talk to him about my friends who are going through a midnight in their lives which means you can go to god anytime and talk to him about me your friend in my midnight while i tell him about you in your midnight and because god doesn't sleep then all of us will be heard then jesus concludes now in the prayer parables this is the second time jesus talks about people who don't want to answer a prayer and have to be pushed by persistence the first one was a charge do you remember that parabol a widow who went to a charge but the charge refused and only answered because the woman was persistent the second is this one a friend who refused to answer but only answered because the other friend was persistent and in both cases jesus says but god is not like the judge god is not like the friend god actually wants to answer prayer god actually answers prayer we don't need to even persist he will answer so when we pray and we pray persistently we don't pray because god is sleeping we don't pray because god is a wicked judge we pray because prayer is about bringing the community i will always pray i will always persist because there will always be a community to pray for do you see the difference we don't persist because god is ignorant we persist because there is always a community in need of prayer there is always a friend that i need to go to god my friend on behalf of so jesus says then you better keep knocking because it will be open you better keep seeking because you will find you better keep asking because it will be given for as long as the community of god exists we have a reason to keep praying to always pray but look at how jesus finishes it jesus says in the last line if you then bring evil know how to give good gifts to your children how much more will your heavenly father give the holy spirit to those who ask him wait a minute what is jesus saying you mean to tell me all along we were learning that the greatest gift of prayer is the holy spirit watch how jesus finishes it jesus says it is all it all culminates when you are giving the holy spirit that is the final objective of prayer that you are giving the holy spirit knock and it will be open what will be opened the holy spirit seek and you will find what will you find the holy spirit ask and you will be given give in what the holy spirit you've got to love jesus when jesus finishes this lesson on prayer he tells us who is the greatest gift of prayer he says the greatest gift of prayer is for you to be given the holy spirit when you have him you will have everything now it explains why in matthew 6 33 he said seek first the kingdom of god and his righteousness for after that all things will be given ah jesus unlocks it jesus unlocks it all you can pray for all of it until you have the holy spirit you will get none of it all of it comes through the holy spirit that that is why we pray so that the holy spirit may be given i go to god in prayer for my friends and i say lord my friends marriage is in trouble and god says i give them the holy spirit because when there is the holy spirit a husband stops cheating when does the holy spirit swearing stops when there's the holy spirit beating up stops hallelujah jesus says you go and you pray lord my friend is unemployed then god says i give your friend the holy spirit because when the holy spirit is there what will happen you asking me let me tell you when the holy spirit entered david he moved from a shepherd to a king when the holy spirit enters we move from poverty to prosperity give them the holy spirit and they will make their way out of poverty the holy spirit the greatest gift that we could ever ask in prayer is to be given this third member of the godhead the holy spirit and if i could sing i would sing that him in the vernacular it says holy spirit faithful guide you are the ultimate gift of why we pray because when you have arrived we seek and find we knock and open we ask and get not only me my whole community when the holy spirit arrives my prayer becomes a fulfillment of the commandments i pray to the only god i fulfill it i pray and i exalt the name of god i don't take it in vain i pray and the kingdom comes as i rest on his holy sabbath when the holy spirit allah arrives i no longer read the commandments i pray the commandments i leave the commandments that is why he said in jeremiah he will write the commandments in our hearts when the holy spirit comes the commandments become my life they become my prayer because i have been given the greatest gift of them all i pray i'm going to pray right now i pray that god may give you the greatest gift of them all and i pray that you pray for me and you pray for others as we pray for the community and in the community prays for you and the community prays for me we pray and the greatest gift of them all is given now the question the disciples had was answered what was different about the prayer life of jesus all his prayers whereby the holy spirit through the holy spirit for the holy spirit in the holy spirit after all the bible tells you jesus was conceived of the holy spirit that is what changes a prayer are you being religious or are you under the holy spirit the format doesn't matter the question is are you praying in the spirit are you praying through the spirit are you praying under the spirit is the holy spirit uttering your prayer in unknown groanings is the holy spirit the ultimate gift of your prayer life and my prayer life what do we do now now we pray our father what in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread forgive us our sins as we forgive those who are indebted to us lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil grant us we pray the gift of your holy spirit father i pray bless us with your holy spirit i pray for each and every person watching watching in their homes watching where they work watching the outside on the law under verandas watching in the bedrooms watching in the hospitals now father we pray give us the greatest gift of them all give us your holy spirit let him fill us up inside and outside let us be ourselves worthy for him to work to work in us and through us to work around us to work within us now father i pray may none of your children who are listening be in a life that is without your holy spirit father i pray manifest your holy spirit in their lives father i pray the fruit of the presence of your holy spirit let them hear and now begin to be revealed in their lives in our lives in us we pray that your holy spirit may be poured afresh on us that we may know life through him that it may be our joy to live in him that he may find in us a place to tabernacle this we pray in the mightiest name of all the only name given that we should pray by the name of jesus christ your son our savior our soon coming redeemer now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we could ask or imagine to him who is able to present us faultless and blameless before the throne of grace to the only true god invisible and incorruptible be honor and glory through christ jesus amen
