president biden has been heckled over his handling of afghanistan while touring parts of new jersey left devastated by the recent hurricane he was speaking to local policemen onlookers erupted over the military withdrawal i discussed this a short time ago with my colleague annelise nielsen in washington and elise joe biden was on a tour highlighting what he says is living proof that climate change is here kieran that was joe biden's very clear message as he toured around these areas impacted by hurricane ida he said climate change is here and as he was talking to locals he had a very clear message that that was a priority of the biden administration as they looked at a summer that has had very extreme weather events right across the united states he was also traveling to california as well to visit areas impacted by wildfires but there was also a motive you could see to try and steer the conversation away from the afghanistan withdrawal as the heat's dying off about that in the united states however a few neighbors who did appear to have a donald trump flag flying in their backyard nonetheless made their feelings uh very much known to the president as he went past leave them in the ruins and leap americans behind leave americans behind he will leave you behind you guys protected here yeah that's great buried in arlington 2011 december 11th for what he lost his life for one and annelise congress is returning from its august recess with a number of important deadlines all happening at once karen this is one for the political die-hards out there that want to watch everything happening in congress because it's going to be a jam-packed few weeks that could potentially see the us default on its debt ceiling for the first time ever and trigger what we've already seen three government shutdowns in the last decade this could end with shutdown number four now this all starts with the federally assisted unemployment benefits now coming to an end seven and a half million americans from today will no longer get federal assistance and what was notable there is there was really no pushback from joe biden or his administration about this uh very much optimistic there that the economy is going to bounce back as the us gets vaccinated moves on from the pandemic but certainly taking a gamble that the delta variant isn't going to get much worse so we're not going to see another worse variant throughout the summer but when we continue on there's a few really key deadlines here reconciliation draft deadlines due september 15. now reconciliation is a really interesting process because that's where either side can agree on a certain number of amendments now they have to be amendments that impact something that raises money something like tax but they can be passed with a simple majority that means they don't need that 60 votes they can do it with just 50 which both sides have and it also means that neither side can resort to a filibuster so it triggers what's known as a voter rama where in quick succession they'll vote for a number of different resolutions it doesn't happen every year and we could be seeing two this year so it shows that this is going to be important especially when they're trying to get through big infrastructure package which is due on the 27th now that's a deadline that's been set by nancy pelosi to vote on this infrastructure bill at least 550 billion but there's still debate about whether that could end up as high as 3.4 trillion depending on what happens in reconciliation but the progressives said they're not looking at the infrastructure bill until that reconciliation draft passes now all this is going to culminate in government funding running out on september 30 if they don't hit those deadlines and that means the u.s could hit its debt ceiling of 28.4 trillion dollars now that's significant but we did see a number of times during the trump administration the uh they did vote to extend that debt ceiling so it's likely there will be a bipartisan showing to do that again but these are tenuous times especially leading up to the midterms the republicans don't quite have the advantage they did before now with this abortion legislation coming through because this is where democrats are likely to have people angry and come out to vote especially young women so that's where they could see an advantage there so it could be within the republicans mind to cause a bit of chaos and be able to then say oh the economy's not being managed well because of joe biden and uh let the politicking continue another couple of additions that they've wanted to make to these spending allocations has been another 14 billion dollars in that disaster and hurricane relief uh that the biden administration wants but also another 6.4 billion dollars to help reset all those afghan refugees money for the pentagon to be able to allocate extra money to screening but also state department to help resettle them and this is all going to play out into that debate about what's happening with afghan refugees as well so plenty happening in the next few weeks and not many legislative days to do it so this is going to be for all those political die-hards out there as we said be time to be watching congress
