Living in a Van in the Mountains

after the past few weeks of some Wild Adventures [Music] [Music] [Music] hello good morning when we wake up in places like this we can't help but have a little bit of a slow morning which I love we've both been reading doing a little bit of work but mostly just hanging out there's nothing I hate more than when Maddie puts her freezing cold hands on my bare belly I know that she hates it so much and it's so evil of me that I still want to do it so badly my hands are ice cubes right now so cold [Music] this site is so strange because we're we're camped right at the foot of these mountains and when you look at them they look so close it looks like I could just walk right up there but then I look at the van at the base of it and that van looks so tiny so the depth perception is way off it's such a cool experience like look how far away those birds are but the mountain looks so close what is happening to my eyes I wish I could just tell Bowie it's okay we're coming back here later tonight sometimes he loves spots so much and he just lies down in protest as soon as we start the band this is Bowie's form of protest I'm not leaving sure we are driving into the town of Seward right now we're just getting our bearings circling around it's so camper friendly there are so many RVs parked along the ocean there are cruise ships the waterfall looks amazing so let's go for a walk seems like the place to be it's all right what if you gotta lose baby it's all right it's all on the way oh yeah look where Bowie wants to go you know are you crying why are you crying to go in there you don't even know what it is or can he read mads has a tiny bladder so uh Bowie and I spent a lot of time sitting on streets waiting for her I don't mind it so as you can see by where we are the main attraction here in Seward is getting out on the water and seeing a number of things whether it's the wildlife the glaciers or the Kanai fjords National Park but all of those tours are at least five to six hours we don't love the idea of leaving Bowie in the van all day because we have kind of done it a couple of times already in the past few weeks so we're gonna take a back seat on this one and just enjoy the size from Land look at this one I feel like if you drive that boat you have to wear a captain's hat and you got to yell all aboard baby baby wow it does look good I love her okay so there is a hike in Seward called Mount marathon and we were gonna just do that hike for the scenery because you got a very beautiful view of Seward the town and Resurrection Bay and I mean selfishly because I flew the Drone into the canyon I'm very sad that we won't get that Vantage Point anymore so I would love to do a hike that gives us that bird's eye view we just found out that on Mount Marathon there is a trail that brings people from all over Alaska to race in what is known as the toughest 5K race on the planet and we've been working out so we're kind of wanting to challenge ourselves make it over how much I love this spot you're just in this big wide open space in between the mountains there's a little river close by so there's the faint sound of the water flowing it feels good to be here the other reason I love it is because when we go to pee don't have to close no doors or Windows just let it all hang out speaking of using the bathroom a lot of you have been asking if we have a bathroom in this tiny van and the answer is not very straightforward but I want to show you how we go to the bathroom in our little home Billy say hello to one of the best upgrades we've made on the van this is our Cuddy composting toilet a lot of you that aren't in the van Life Community watch these videos and just comment how do you poop in your van and to be honest I'd probably be wondering the same thing so I'm going to show you okay it's very simple you flip that knob and you open the hole you poop in there you pee in there that light tells you when the P jug is full and you have to empty it and then when you're done pooping you take this out and you turn this around and that agitates the soil voila and then about once a month we empty it and put new soil in and start again the main reason we went with the Cutty is that it's smaller in size and as you can see we don't have a lot of space and also it doesn't have to be vented out to the outside of the van the fan works internally and all you really have to do is wire a 12 volt wire we don't need to leave these beautiful campsites in the morning to go look for a bathroom because we have this composting toilet I hope that was a little bit helpful if you're building a van or moving into a van making the decision to get composting toilet is a no-brainer in our minds oh the sun is out our chairs are set up Bowie's happy we're happy oh a helicopter whoa tonight for dinner we're having potato salad broccoli and cauliflower and what else veggie oh veggie burgers but in the potato salad we really really love this so we'll share it with you in the dressing there's Mayo lemon Dijon garlic salt and pepper red onion and green onion and normally we would put Dill but apparently they don't eat Dill here in Alaska because we haven't had it in months we like to put lots and lots of veggies in it [Music] we're gonna sit down to eat but after dinner we are finally going to have a fire so let's do it [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and my favorite part about having a fire are all of the snacks that you can make on the fire like Jiffy Pop [Music] [Applause] do I just leave it on top yeah it's on fire man [Music] I don't know if you're supposed to put it straight on the Fire I told you so what are you supposed to do we're learning apparently you're just supposed to gently shake it over the fire we just put it right we're gonna lose a lot of respect here I think pulls their phone up to Google I'm cutting this out how am I not gonna burn my hand Outdoors girls the best it does I think I already ruined it though no keep trying keep trying oops we opened it prematurely we are losers maybe we'll just open it and see what's in there now it's really buttery I think it was worth it I'm not defeated we'll try again another time we'll be lighter for our 5K race tomorrow we're just trying to make you laugh you know it was all scripted [Music] laughs okay friends uh so I think we agree to this um challenge of running the toughest 5K in the world when we were a little down in the dumps and then when we actually looked into it yeah like it's the toughest 5K on the planet for a reason the main issue is that there is still loads of snow on the trail so it might not even be possible to get to the top but we still want to do a hike and get active so we found another Trail and we're gonna go do that and let me tell you it is a little bit hard to go back on what we say when we are filming everything because this morning I woke up and I thought we still have to do it we told everybody yesterday we're doing it but the reality is things change you learn on the go and you have to be flexible so we're gonna make something else work and we'll bring you along as always I'll take it well before we moved into a van we were always watching YouTube videos to just kind of get a gist of what living in a van would be like so I hope that that's what this video is for you things are always changing baby things are changing adapting is living and on that note we're going to a bakery we absolutely had to come back and check out this Bakery first of all because I love bakeries and second of all because it's in an old church and the church has rainbow stairs and the sign that says love is love that we saw yesterday so here we are [Music] what a perfect place for a coffee or in our case pastries a lot of them [Music] I like that we went from running the toughest five days we're just sitting here with a box full of pastries I'm gonna have a little uh appreciation moment because there's no way in heck I'd be running right now it's nice to have someone around that pushes you to do things so let's go do those things nothing is more humbling than trying to run up the hill I can't believe we were gonna try and do that okay this is already super challenging oh usually listen to music when I'm running but when I'm in places like this when you hear the water and the birds it's so nice to run without music and Bowie's just stopping for a little drink oh [Music] wow and running in such beautiful places like this is so motivating I can't feel like I could just run and run please look how cute talia's Rosie Post Run cheeks are oh my God you're so close who needs blush you wanna you wanna green me do you want the creamy brush your teeth first you are so dirty who let you go on that muddy Trail so we are on our way up to Whittier right now we just pulled over to make a smoothie and we have these little ice trays in our fridge that freeze your fingers when you pop them out so I need to I need to do the rest yeah berries protein powder yogurt ice and water sometimes a mango if we have one oh it's a great road trip meal you just slurp and drive slurp flurp and drive flirt slurp and drive okay [Music] thanks you too thank you so to get to Whittier we actually need to go through a massive tunnel that takes us through the mountains wait actually I read it's one of the only tunnels that is a multi-vehicle tunnel so the train also uses this tunnel we just missed the last tunnel the next one is opening at 4 30 and it tells us right there and it looks like we're gonna be the first ones it's just so funny to think about how this town is only accessible through this tunnel or by ship and this tunnel closes at 11 at night so people living in this town are really isolated it's also okay to be waiting in lines like this when you're in your home it doesn't really change anything I'm just gonna go hang out in the house [Music] all right it's a full house behind us and one minute until tinkle to take off mom did I just shot you through the tunnel that would be my kind of title why is this like the most exciting thing we've done in days we're last and we got here first how does that make any sense this is awful I'm calling to complain call them yeah it's green go go go go [Applause] this is a long tunnel like we've been now driving through it seven minutes no that's when I'm open like five five minutes we'll look up how long this Bowie well look at how long this tunnel is and put it here all right we see the light we're exiting the tunnel transporting transporting to another universe that Road is closed which is where the campsite we wanted to go to is and over here it says no overnight camping so I think we might break the rules this evening no I think we just stay here I don't like breaking the rules babe she does [Music] good morning [Music] we decided to follow the rules and find somewhere that we are legally allowed to camp we are in Whittier and for now I'm just going to try and enjoy the rain but we does not like the rain and he gets really spiky hair you're so cute we'll see you next week for our last Alaskan Adventure you will not want to miss this one [Music] that is a glacially Fed Lake in early summer in Alaska I feel amazing now
