continually be in my mouth my soul shall make its boasts in the lord the humble shall hear of it and be glad oh magnify the lord with me let's exalt his name together everybody verse 3 o magnify the lord with me let's exalt his name together one more time oh lord magnify the lord with me let's exalt his name together i sought the lord and he heard me and delivered me from all my fears they looked at him and were radiant their faces were not ashamed this poor man cried out and the lord heard them and saved them out of all his troubles the angel of the lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them o taste and see the lord is good blessed is the man who trusts in him everybody oh taste and see the lord is good blessed is the man who trusted him oh fear the lord you his saints there is no one to those who fear him the young lions lack and suffer hunger but those who seek the lord shall act no good thing today's new testament reading will become from the book of mark beginning at verse 40. now a leper came to him imploring him kneeling down to him and saying to him if you are willing you can make me clean then jesus moved with compassion stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him i am willing be cleansed as soon as he had spoken immediately the leprosy left him he was cleansed and he strictly warned him and sent him away at once and said to him see that you say nothing to anyone but go your way show yourself to the priest and offer your and off and offer for your cleansing those things which moses commanded as the testimonies to them however he went out and began to proclaim it freely and spread the matter so that jesus could no longer openly enter the city but was outside in deserted places and they came to him from every direction the word of the lord different components of that ministry serving our seniors the sos ministry we have the evangelism ministry we have the food service ministry and as you are aware this morning sister gail made an announcement from reverend bowman that we need cooks this is a vital ministry to the church this ministry is more than 30 years old and it has always served our community well now the those who have been cooking in the past some of them retired this is the second wave the first wave of cooks when i came here they're all retired now brother gus is still with us this morning he was one of those faithful individuals and then a second wave came and they are now reaching the age of retirement so we need some of you to step up we need you to step up with faithful service to this ministry we feed our homeless neighbors we provide meals for individuals we we have a crew that take meals to the homes of seniors and others in need and that way we ensure that at least for a couple of days they get a healthy well-balanced well-cooked meal and so we need to continue that so we need some of you saints to step up for that we have the the counseling ministry under reverend daphne swinton the stephen ministry where you are trained to walk next to other believers you are trained to help them along the way to walk side by side with them to listen to them amen to pray with them and pray for them it is this ministry is effective it's it's been effective since its establishment a couple of years ago and while we have been in business as the stephen ministry for two years we only have one man we need men we need men because men need men iron sharpens iron we need men to walk with men in these troubled times amen and so we need some of you the lord may move on your heart you may just be a good jesus christ we pray amen amen this is a reminder that we are going to observe the lord's supper following this this word and the praise team so you can get your elements of the table together now we will we will observe the lord's the lord's supper would you stand with me as we turn to our in our devices or in our bibles whatever you have to first chronicles chapter 16 first chronicles chapter we are looking at verses 28 and 29 from the new king james version first chronicles chapter 16 verses 28 and 29 give to the lord all families of people give to the lord glory and strength give to the lord the glory do his name bring an offering and come before him o worship the lord in the beauty of holiness this is the word of god amen this morning i want to try to say something about three elements of true worship three elements of true worship i want you this morning to prayerfully move with me through this 16th chapter of first chronicles in order for us to get a proper understanding of the background the context for this for this song uh what the biblical scholars call the sits in lieben it's the setting out of which this psalm is inspired the psalm was written by king david and we just selected a portion of the song it really begins with verse seven and you can if you keep your devices open or your bible is open you can read along with me i need you to follow me through chapter 16. the the psalm begins at verse 7. the psalm was written by king david at a pivotal point in kingdom history the city of jerusalem had been established by king david the bible says that he's a man after god's own heart david is the one chosen by god to be the king through whom the king of kings would come you know what i mean by that right you do do you know what i mean by that david is the one chosen by god and out of his lineage would come who the king of kings in the chapters that lead up to 16 david has decisively defeated the philistines and as you know the philistines were the enemy of god's people and they were the enemy of god's people because they were against what god had for them and anybody who is against what god has for you is your enemy not only had david defeated israel's enemy the first few verses of chapter 15 says david built houses for himself in the city of david and had a prepared a place for the ark of god and pitched the tent for it now i'm gonna need you to i'm gonna need you to put on your thinking caps with me today you can't be sleepy today hey man if you're awake just just wave your hand around so i can manage my own expectations this is the setting david the victorious king the people are ready to rejoice the ark of the covenant is to be brought into the city of jerusalem you have a victorious king who has established a place of rest for the covenant people now it was time for david to bring the ark of god up from the city of obed eden i wish i had some bible readers in here this morning they had to bring you already know that the ark of the covenant was a sacred chest it was built by the israelites under this exact specifications given to them by god and it included god's pledge to them that he would dwell among his people and that he would give guidance from the mercy seat at the top of the ark y'all know something about the mercy seat it's on top of the ark of the covenant two angels facing each other with their wings stretched forward over the mercy seat where god was thought to dwell and lead his people the ark of the covenant the ark of the covenant symbolized the very presence of god among his people the ark of the covenant was god's message to his human creation his chosen people of his desire to be reconciled to them and to dwell among his people on earth it pointed to the resurrection or the restoration of the divine human relationship that was lost in the garden of eden are y'all with me you do you know what i mean by that so let me just i just want to make sure you know what i mean by that as we move forward so in the garden eaton god created the garden he created the animal kingdom he created the fruit and vegetable and then on the sixth day god created man and woman and put them in the garden and said this is your kingdom tend the garden and i will take care of everything else you won't have to worry about a thing because the divine human relationship is perfect and the only requirement you have is to tend the garden the only prohibition don't eat from the tree when adam ate the relationship was broken and god has been desiring to restore that relationship that was broken in the garden but he had to take us through salvation history to do it but he wanted to give us some signposts along the way of what his intention ultimately would be his intention ultimately is to be re-established to dwell on earth among his people he wants to turn the earth again into the garden y'all don't see that's what that's what the book of revelation means when it talks about the new heaven and the new earth it's restoration of that which was broken so the ark of the covenant was important it was a major communication from the creator god that i want to be with you you're not ready yet but there will come a time when you will be ready and until then i want you to remember i want to be with you y'all got that in this text david has brought the ark of god into the city of jerusalem and the covenant people are rejoicing in worship and there is high praise in the city david is dressed in a linen robe fine linen as were the priests and the levites were on duty as prescribed by the law it was a perfect worship situation chronicles 1 16 1-3 says so they brought the ark of god and set it in the midst of the tabernacle that david had erected for it and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before god and when david had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings he blessed the people in the name of the lord then he distributed to everyone of israel both men and women man and woman to everyone a loaf of bread a piece of meat and a cake of raisins it was a major worship experience this is a grand worship with a kingdom theme that i don't want us to miss this morning this psalm was written by david and he's the one who is celebrating israel's king yahweh and his kingdom stay with me look at three things before we get to our text first i want you to see the king's power in verses 8 through 12 in the psalm he is the god who is known by his deeds he has the power to deliver from bondage yahweh proved more powerful than all of the gods of egypt he spoiled the egyptians without using a sword he has power over nature he commands the sun and the clouds the power to part the red sea he has the power to protect his people and provide for his people in miraculous ways he is known by his deeds he caused water to flow from rocks and he sent down manna from heaven and that same god is available for those who seek him by the power of the lord's presence and by his protection he provides for his people he is known for his deed i just want to stick a pen in it right there and ask you has he done anything for you no seriously has he exercised any power in your life no no for real no no you see if he has done anything for you you ought to respond better than that [Applause] right israel in this worship experience is worshipping the king of kings because of his power and then in verses 13 through 17 we see the king's people the king's power the king's people it says o seed of israel his servant you children of jacob his chosen ones these are the covenant people those whom he has set aside for himself a king is not a king if he doesn't have people he needs people to be the king and he does not change and israel realized that they have been chosen they are a covenant people god chose them and his judgments are to remember to be remembered over all the earth his covenant is forever the text says the word which he commanded for a thousand generations a covenant which he made with abraham and then with isaac and confirmed it with jacob to israel for everlasting to everlasting it's a covenant people don't y'all know who you are don't sit here and act like you don't know who you are you have been chosen you were chosen before god laid the foundation of the world as messed up and as wayward as i was as messed up as i can be right now god and his omniscience knew every mistake that i would make he knew every wrong turn that i would take he knew every bad decision that i would make and in spite of all of that before he laid the foundations of the world he chose me and he chose you let me make this more communal as messed up as you are as indecisive as you have been as many bad decisions as you have made as messed up as your life has been god in his fort knowledge knew every mistake you would make and in spite of all that he chose you he chose you to be his covenant people king's people you know what sometimes we need to start living like we're the king's people we are the king's people but then in verses 18 through 22 we see the king's place and the king's place is earth that's why jesus says when you pray say our father in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven the earth is the lord's and the fullness thereof listen you are king's people living in the king's place the text says 18 to you i will give a place i will give the land of canaan as an allotment of your inheritance in the text where israel is worshiping is in canaan when you were few in numbers you didn't have a place you went from nation one nation to another and from one kingdom to another god protected you from the kings of the earth i wish i wish you can get i wish you can grab hold to this your king protected you from the kings of the earth your king has the last word for his people on earth young are you getting this are you getting this your team when you want to look to somebody to meet your needs look to your team because it is your king who has protected you from the kings of the earth saying do not touch my anointed and do my prophets no harm david lives then david lives three elements in the psalm of the king he lifts these three elements in in the psalm the power of the king the people of the king the place of the king patrick shiner who was an author in his work entitled the kingdom of god and the victory of the cross i recommend it highly the kingdom of god and the victory of the cross this is what he says and i quote the kingdom is the king's power over the king's people in the king's place these three realities power people in place interrelate and while they can be distinguished they are never to be separated they are like strands of a rope tightly twisted together end quote there is a kingdom theme here and i don't want you to miss it the psalm moves from the king's power to the king's people to the king's place to praising the king and we see that in verses 23 through 27 sing to the lord proclaim the good news of his salvation declare his glory for the lord is great and greatly to be praised but then solomon makes a right turn in the text from 7 to 27 he's addressing the immediate audience he's talking to the people of israel in the city of jerusalem rejoicing because the ark of the covenant had been brought to the city that day that season but then in verse 28 he begins to talk to all the families of the earth david is no longer speaking to the israelites alone who are celebrating on this occasion he is now speaking to all the nations and that includes us he's now speaking to all the nation and here here is where we find the three elements that are essential for worship for true worship that i want to live for our consideration and this morning i want you to measure your response measure your attitude and worship against what i'm about to present to you right now for those who worship the lord here there is a pattern for worship that's presented by the psalmist a pattern for worship in the text that's presented by the psalmist look at it it begins give or ascribe to the lord the glory do his name you got to come in right what does it mean to ascribe glory to god can we add anything to god the answer is no does god need anything from us the answer is no can we somehow make the lord more glorious than he already is and the answer is no to ascribe glory means to give to him what he alone deserves we can't add a measure to his glory but we can reflect back to him the glory that he has inherently placed in us and are coming before him he occupies the first place there is no one and no thing more honorable more worthy more faithful more awesome more glorious than god and his name is above every name in heaven and on earth and under the earth give honor ascribe to the lord the glory through his name we are the exalt god we ought to lift him up we ought to reflect back to him the glory that he has we ought to ascribe in the old testament his name is revealed by moses to moses y'all remember that right his name is revealed to moses i am that i am in the new testament we are told that his name shall be called jesus for he saved his people from their sin now you need to know his name is jesus let me tell you something i run into people often these days especially people who have some measure of financial success individuals who might be on their way to being very wealthy or prosperous at least more money than i don't see in my lifetime amen and it is almost inevitable that they come up with the phrase when it comes to jesus i can't worship a man i worship god if if that's your attitude and you grew up in church it means that you have traded your god for money listen to me listen to me if you get to the place in your life where you no longer see the worth of jesus you are in trouble your very soul is in danger what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul his name is jesus and when you come into the church don't come if you can't exalt his name come on now come on now you're in the wrong place if you come into his church for which he died on a cross on calvary and you can't give glory to his name that's why david is instructing us that a crucial element in worship is to ascribe to the lord the glory through his name the name gives expression to the self-determination the independence of god his sovereignty for there is salvation in no other name there is no other name given under heaven among men by which we must be saved only through the name of jesus for god has given him a name that is above every name every name his name is above every billionaire whose name you know his name is above every captain of industry that you want to be like his name is above every name god has given him the name the god you say you worship he has given his son the name that's above every name that at the name of jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess past present and future every time we'll confess that he is lord to the glory of god the father can i get some praise in here [Applause] ascribe to the lord the glory we're talking about the christ of god israel's messiah jesus of nazareth who is the son of god and who is god and who was with god until he became flesh and dwelt among men who beheld his glory as the only begotten of the father give glory to his name ascribe to his name the glory do his name y'all got that don't come in here talking about some other god god is first jesus says no man cometh to the father but by me so if you happen to get into the presence of the god the father you need to look back look around and find jesus and thank him for making it possible amen because you see there are some right living people in the world there's some devoted people in the world and they don't know anything about jesus but they're devoted people my african ancestors were devoted people they may not have known the name jesus but they lived in harmony with the community they lived in harmony with nature they didn't take anything from anybody and they were very religious they were spiritual they may not have known the name of jesus but when i meet my african ancestors who didn't know the name of jesus in heaven i'm gonna be able to talk to them about the one who made their presence in heaven possible do you get this because there's some people running around calling the name of jesus that we ain't gonna meet when we get there ascribe to the lord the glory through his name secondly bring an offering and come before him now before you start talking let me clarify as you know there were various kinds of offerings that were to be made under the old covenant and these offerings had to be made by the people in order to get an audience with god the burnt offering the sin offering they were made for atonement for sin to cleanse the individual so that the covenant people can come into the presence of a holy god in the new testament the lord jesus has atoned for us he was crucified on a cross on a tree outside of the city he was the sacrificial lamb offered to satisfy god's just demands so we don't have to come to worship bringing animal sacrifices notwithstanding we are instructed to bring an offering and come before uh the burnt offering was made jesus has atoned for our sins right he was crucified so we don't have to bring animals we don't have to bring animals to get into the presence of god we have that through jesus christ notwithstanding we are to bring an offering and come before something of substance according to your ability underline that something of substance according to your ability if you have much you can bring much and more if you have little bring little god is not really concerned with the amounts he's concerned with your motive bring an offering don't come empty-handed bring something amen you know bring something it's between you and god can i talk if you got nothing you know what right on an empty envelope thank you lord for all you've done for me and put it in the box the trustees might not understand it but who cares because god knows your heart god knows your motive if you got a quarter left and it's all you got and god has moved on your heart to put it in the envelope put it in the envelope ask god's blessings over it seal it and put your name on it god is not concerned with your amount god is concerned with your motive now for those of you who have more than you need i'm getting ready to go derek on y'all don't be one of those kind of christians don't be one of those kind of christians if you make 9.57 for you to put 95.7 in your envelope go on and round it up don't put 95.67 in your offering don't do that don't do that don't do that that's legalistic right if that's exactly 10 that's what god wants and if you put exactly that you being legalistic gonna round it up to 96. for those of you who have much and you give little while god is not concerned with the amount he is concerned about your motive come on come on don't come empty-handed the offering is first of all an acknowledgement that god is your provider have i got a witness here that he is the source of all of your blessings it honors the lord when you give him the first fruit of your harvest the first part of your income bring an offering from the material blessings that god has bestowed upon you it's an expression of appreciation for all that he has done and is doing come on bring an offering but then the offering is an offering of thanksgiving give an offering of thanksgiving that's the fruit of your lips that offering is an articulation of your gratitude to the lord because he has kept you and has blessed you you are to say it out loud thank you lord because he's blessed you out in the open here's the thing about thanksgiving as i thought about this you know you have done some things for people in their lives a long time ago and they said thank you for it that was back then you did it you remember it because you did it they said thank you and would appreciate it back then but now they forgot all about it am i the only one right and so the reason we want to thank god at every worship experience is because we want him to know that we haven't forgotten about anything that he has done for us janet jackson had that song what have you done for me lately it's a good question what has he done for you lately he woke you up this morning started you on your way gave activity to your limbs amen he put breath in your body he got you from there to here and you're sitting up in here right now closed mouth and the preacher is talking about giving thanks to god for all that he has done for you it's an articulation thank you lord for all that you have done for me we ought to give the praise to thanksgiving of praise and then that's the articulation and then and then we ought to praise him uh bring the offering of praise y'all ever heard the offering of praise the offering of praise that's an offering that's that's animation that's animated by your participation i see some people in here this morning they praise god they raise their hands in the air that's animated they stand up and give god applause that's animated or they sit in their seat and they rock back and forth that's animated or they raise their hand you might not can see it but the lord can see it that's animated praise you want to be able to give god some praise for all that he has done all that he is doing and just praise him because he is who he is he's god all by himself he's inexhaustible he is he is never tired he is he has no beginning has no end god is infinite he is limitless he is self-existent he is sovereign he is eternal he is incomprehensible he is worthy of praise he is majestic he is powerful he is glorious there is no god like our god and he is worthy of all our praise [Music] worthy of our praise and then ascribe to the lord honor do his name bring an offering and come into his presence and then worship the lord in the beauty of holiness this holiness is not an act it's not a behavior uh holiness is a way of being things that are holy have been set aside by the lord for the lord's use the holy bible is the lord's book amen the holy land is the lord's land the holy city is the city chosen by god through david amen they are all holy because they belong to god to worship in the beauty of holiness god looks at the heart he sees past the labels in your suit he's not concerned with armani or noel or romeo hunt he is the one who has blessed you to wear all that stuff that's not impressing him god does not look at your generosity nor your personal success nor your self-sacrifice or service though all of those things have some value god is really interested in the worship experience is the condition of your heart the proper adornment is required you need a white robe holiness is beautiful in the eyes of the lord holiness is presenting oneself before the lord without spot or blemish without sin from staying and the hard part about that is that you and i can't do that on our own no matter how hard we try we can never achieve holiness amen but god has made a way for you and i to be holy hallelujah by redeeming us through the blood of jesus christ so when we come to the table this morning and drink from the cup we are reminded of the blood that washes away our sin we are covered by the blood of jesus god looks at us and he sees the righteousness of christ god made him who had no sin to become sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of god in christ jesus when he looks at us he doesn't see our messed up self because we have died with christ we were crucified with christ and we were raised with him when we put our faith in him thank god for the blood the songwriter says what can wash away my sin nothing but the blood of jesus what can make me whole again nothing but the blood of jesus all precious is the flow that makes me pure as snow no other sound i know nothing but the blood of jesus if you're excited this morning if you are thankful this morning that you don't have to rely on your own righteousness to be accepted by god if you are happy this morning that you are the righteousness of god through jesus christ why don't you just give god some praise up in here thank you for the blood hey hey thank you for the blood there's is a fountain filled with blood drawn from emmanuel's veins and sinners still plunged beneath that flood watch all their guilty same thank god for the blood give to the lord glory do his name bring an offering and come before the lord oh worship the lord in the beauty of holiness [Music] oh [Music] god [Music] world that he gave his only son his son so love this world [Music] that he gave his only life and i don't know why jesus suffered let him die for you and i but because he did it we have eternal [Music] [Applause] [Music] that he gave his only son his son so loved his world that he gave [Music] and is but because he did [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] and all the people said amen thank you thank you vanessa [Music] let us prepare now to renew the covenant with one another we are not passing out papers in the sanctuary no bulletins so i advise you if you can if you have notes in your device you can download the church covenant so on first sundays when we are ready to recite the covenant you have it handy we also have it printed on the screen so let us stand now to prepare to renew the covenant one with another and i will read the leader's part and you read the congregation amen having been led as we believe by the spirit of god to receive the lord jesus christ as our savior and on the profession of our faith we do now in the presence of god angels and this assembly most solemnly and joyfully renew this covenant with one another as one body in christ to contribute cheerfully and regularly as god has prospered us toward the support of the ministry the relief of the poor and the spread of the gospel throughout the world to walk circumspectly in the world to be just in our dealings faithful in our service to be slow to take offense but always ready for reconciliation being mindful of the rules of the savior to secure it without delay altogether when we remove from this place we engage as soon as possible to unite with some of the church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of god's word and all the people said amen union i want to thank you for doing your best to keep the church covenant thank you thank you for not just making the covenant empty words but for your attempts to live out this covenant god bless you now let us prepare for the lord's supper take whatever you have to the congregation once you have had your lord's supper you can place your receptacle right in the pew the holder in the pew you see in front of you there's a little holder in the pew for your cubs aren't there okay some people looking like they don't see it the first row wouldn't have one yours is behind you all right i'm gonna give you a minute to open your [Music] there's a little plastic seal on top that covers the little wafer so you have to cover you have to pull a little plastic seal back and once you have exposed the wafer then you have to pull the seal back for the drink and be careful because it's only a thimble full and if you spill it you have to fake drinking are we ready let us ask god's blessings on the elements of the table god our father we do thank you for this sunday thank you father for so many of the saints being in this place today we thank you for the sweet spirit of worship that's in this place for the koinonia that we feel when we're together in the worship experience thank you for your spirit who moves from heart to heart and breast to breast providing each of us what we need we come to your table now we ask your blessings upon the elements the solid which is representative of your body that was broken jesus body was broken for us jesus body was nailed to a cross jesus blood was shed we thank you for the solid the bread the wafer which represents your broken body thank you for the cup that is the new testament the new covenant that you made with your covenant people in your blood never to be broken we thank you for the bread we thank you for the drink the fruit of the vine and ask your blessings on them in jesus name we pray amen now on the night that jesus was betrayed he took bread blessed it broke it gave it to the disciples and said eat this is my body which is broken for you in like manner after supper he took the cup and after he had given thanks he said drink all of it this is the new testament of my blood which is shared for you let us commute let us commune together [Music] bless you i'm going to be on the front porch and in the parking lot i'd like to see you shake my hand before you go out especially if i haven't seen you i'ma rush out and now may the grace of god the love of christ and the sweet communion of god's holy spirit rest rule and abide with you both now and [Music] forever me [Applause] [Music] um [Music] [Music] you
