and [Music] is [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] good morning brothers and sisters in christ welcome to the saint ambrose anglican church in the parish of saint thomas shigonas we are truly delighted that you have chosen to join us on this or harvest morning we know that some of you have been with us throughout our patronal festival and we say thank you if you wish to relive both the talent show or receive the strong message shared at our praise and worship healing service simply log on to the anakin outlook facebook or youtube page where you can access these activities at your own convenience harvest time is when we as christians give god thanks for continuing to provide for us which also gives us the ability to share our bounty with others which is really the joy we receive as we get ready to receive god's word i ask you to meditate on this or harvest theme thanks be to god we strive to be rooted and grounded in love taken from ephesians 3 verse 17. we will be led by our parish priests father eric thompson and our guest preacher reverend deacon david ferdinand pollard we trust that our service will be a blessing to you on behalf of our parish priests father eric thompson the clergy and parishioners of saint ambrose i say welcome and i bid you to enjoy our harvest service and to continue to spread god's word i wish you a christ filled me and we now join the live stream from ambrose anglican at the right hand of the majesty on high having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than this now god did not subject the coming world about which we are speaking to angels but someone has testified somewhere what are human beings that you are mindful of them or mortals that you care for them you have made them for a little while lower than the angels you have crowned them with glory and honor subjecting all things under their feet now in subjecting all things to them god left nothing outside their control as it is we do not yet see everything in subjection to them but we do see jesus who for a little while has made lower than the angels now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death so that by the grace of god he might taste death for everyone it is fitting that god for whom and through whom all things exist and bringing many children glory should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings for the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one father for this reason jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters saying i will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters in the midst of all congregation i will praise you the word of the lord [Music] uh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] yes [Music] yes [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] i [Music] [Music] hallelujah [Music] hallelujah [Music] [Music] [Music] the lord be with you [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to mark some pharisees came and to test jesus they asked is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife he answered them what did moses command you they said moses allow a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her but jesus said to them because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you but from the beginning of creation god made them male and female for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh so they are no longer two but one flesh excuse me therefore what god has joined together let no one separate then in the house the disciples ask him again about this matter he said to them whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her and if she divorces her husband and marries another he commits adultery people were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them and the disciples spoke sternly to them but when jesus saw this he was indignant and said to them let the little children come to me do not stop them for it is to such as these that the kingdom of god belongs truly i tell you whoever does not receive the kingdom of god as a little child will never enter it and he took the children up in his arms laid his hands on them and blessed them the gospel of christ i share my thoughts with you in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen please be seated i would like to take this opportunity to thank father thompson for inviting me to be a part of this harvest festival and i bring greetings to you from the cathedral church of the holy trinity from the river from the dean clergy and parishioners of holy trinity our theme today is we strive to be rooted and grounded in love and how how do we as christian strive when we are already in love well on our christian journey our christian journey begins in baptism begins in baptism our christian life is not just accepting jesus it is also committing ourselves to a lifetime of learning and willingness to read and study god's word as we train and to listen to the holy spirit for direction it is a contingent process of surrounding surrendering our lives to the will of god it is not a process that we do when we feel like doing it if we have to be surrender and we have to be rooted in god we have to do that at every possible time not convenient to ourselves but every time that we have to be rooted in to that love of god and how can we live a life rooted and grounded in god when we live in a world that is mean corrupted unkind bitter angry and demanding of us our catechism from number 88 to 107 when we look at page 400 and five our catechism helps us and subject development and growth page 405 in our book of common prayer prayer and worship and it gives us here what form of worship are available to a christian it goes on two forms of worships are available to the christian person personal christian personal worship or private prayer and corporate worship or common prayer and what is prayer prayer is responding to god by thought by feeling and by deeds with our own words see my dear friend we don't have to go and find words to praise god you know what comes off from our heart that is praise is to god what is christian prayer christian prayer is relating to god the father through jesus christ and the power of the holy spirit what prayer did christ teach us our lord gave us the example of prayer known as the lord's prayer and of course we have the recital of the lord's prayer here in 93. what are the principle acts of prayers the principal acts of prayers adoration praise thanksgiving penitence oblation intercession petition meditation and contemplation my dear friends we are guided we are guided we are not left alone to find our way in this world what is adoration and we it is explained adoration is the lifting up of the heart and mind to god asking god but to give asking nothing but to gaze steadily upon god's presence why do we praise god we praise god not to obtain anything but because god's being what he is in himself and god's action what he does draws praise from him for what do we offer thanksgiving thanksgiving is offered to god for all the blessings of this life for redemption and for whatever draws us closer to god i study as your thanksgiving has been demonstrated to god by what you have offered god that what you have worked and labored hard for what is penitence in penitence we confess our sins and make restitution where possible asking forgiveness with the intention to amend our lives what is prayer of obligation oblation oblation is an offering to god of ourselves our lives and our work in union with christ what are intercessions and petitions intercessions brings before god the needs of others in petition we present our needs that god's will may be done what is meditation meditation is a form of prayer in which under the guidance of the holy spirit we focus our minds on a portion of scripture or some truth or experience ponder it in our hearts and resolve to give expression in our lives to what we have learned what is contemplation contemplation is a form of prayer in which we keep our hearts and minds still and attentive to god allowing god to work in us as he wills through the indwelling spirit what is corporate worship as in private worship the individual relates to god the father through jesus christ in the power of the holy spirit so in corporate worship the christian community united by the spirit acknowledges the holiness of god hears his word offers prayers and celebrates the sacrament as one body what is fasting fasting is a voluntary act of denying oneself pleasure or legitimate need for a certain for a certain length of time why do christian fast fasting me is a mean of self-denial some something the will to strengthen the will to respond to god's message to his people and reinforcing repentance intercession and identification with the needy why is fasting often associated with prayer our lord's example and other spiritual sources teaches us that this form of self-discipline is an aid to prayer what is abstinence abstinence is a voluntary act of lessening the quantity of food one eats or of denying oneself other pleasure and finally what when do we fast the following days are observed for special acts of discipline and self-denial ashwanzee and other holy and other weak days of lent and of holy week except the feast of the annunciation my dear friends this is what it means to be grounded in feet this is what it means when we are walking and we are journeying jeremiah also tells us how to be rooted and grounded in christ jeremiah chapter 17 verses 7 and 8 it says blessed are those who trust in the lord who put their trust in god they shall be like a tree planted by water sending out its roots by the stream it shall not fear when he comes and its leaves shall stay green in the year of drought it is not anxious and it does not cease to be a fruit here jeremiah shows us that when we stay connected to god who is our living water the stream we will be well we will not be anxious there will be bountiful and excellent food even in the season of drought you know sometimes we go through a period and we believe that god has abandoned us we have seen that today in job's reading where job's job was challenged because of job's loyalty to god his love for god his unwavering commitment to god the time of drought is now the heat is here and we are all called upon to share our brothers our sisters our neighbors those less fortunate than ourselves and our leaders we cannot be a tree that it only shades ourselves and we have fruit for ourselves because we are rooted in the living water of christ if we if we bear food for ourselves my dear friends and we shared ourselves we become a selfish christian when we look at the cross we see what perfect love love looks like what perfect love is all about when we trust in god we will not wither when trial comes and the trials do come up the christian life is not worn without trials and temptations a deep-rooted life in the lord of love will strengthen and preserve us through trials and we will flourish no matter what life throws us us in life we can always tell those who are planted by planted in god by their fruits and galatians 5 chapter galatians chapter 5 verses 22 and 23 says beloved we would always recognize those who are planted by the river because their fruits are the fruits of the holy spirit which is joy peace patience goodness faithfulness gentleness and self-control just as those who are committed just as those who are committed connected sorry to the river bears like christ-like fruits it is by virtue of our baptism water that we are called to be imitators of god as beloved children and walk in love as christ loved us and gave himself up for us a fragrant offering and sacrifice to god ephesians 5 12. how are we imitating christ in this world today how can we imitate christ in our little corner of his vineyard as we look around we see god's people who are on rocky grounds those who are homeless those in need of food shelter and clothing those in need of prayers deliverance healing counseling they are lonely tired and afraid how can we help them how can we direct them how can we bring them to the rock that is higher than high for their roots to be grounded in that love that we as christians demonstrated do we only bring that love on sundays or can we only express that love on a sunday because my dear friends when we are asked to go out into the world in peace and be of good courage and who will find out what is good and love and serve the lord we are now sent out in the world to do the work that god has commissioned us to do we have now going around the world to share the world what we have received the living god that we have received and we are shining in the darkest light rather than sometimes five of us trying to pass through one space five cars trying to pass through one space in that parking lot have you ever seen that after church good questions don't receive the sacraments and we are fighting that is not what god called us to do that is not rooted and godly the love and we have to be careful john 3 16 for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son god gave his only son not just for you and for me but for all the world all the wood centuries of avalor says and i quote here christ has nobody but our body christ have no hands but our hands no feet on the earth but ours ours are eyes through which god looks compassionately on this world hours at the feet with which he walks to do good ours are the hands through which he blesses the world ours at the feet ours are the eyes we are his body christ has nobody but our body and when father thompson or any priest lifts up the host and the body of christ we are my dear friends a part of that body singly we can do not as much collectively as the body of christ we can move mountains we are asleep and giant that freighter wake up my dear friends we are going to assault fight with a pen knife and we cannot do that anymore we are called to serve god and love god and show the world what we are and who we are we cannot be hiding under the bed and under the bushel we walk brave we walk free and we don't burn we had any wrong as though we lost 25 cents and trying to find it we look up and we look them in the eye so they can see the light of god reflecting through our eyes my dear friend that is what it calls to be rooted and grounded in love for christ how deep is the root of our faith and love are we the envy of the world are we bringing glory to god by what we see and here are we using our hands to bless are we bringing glory to god and the way we live and the way we treat others are we allowing god to lead us to where he wants us to be of service bearing fruit for his kingdom my dear friends we are called to task and that's us we are called upon to do god is with us we are not doing it on our own we have to make the difference we have to show the world that christ is not dead he is alive is it possible we can sing that christ's not dead he is alive christ our dead he is he is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] my dear friends i once again i thank you for inviting me and to be a part of this uh harvest celebration do have a blessed week
