and gloria affable presiding today is cardinal mahoney please stand [Music] come to me [Music] keep us [Music] must we is [Music] deeply [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit peace be with you my friends welcome to ash wednesday in the beginning of our wonderful lenten journey each year the blessing of ashes and giving you the ashes on the forehead will occur right after the final blessing that way we don't have to move everybody twice for communion in ashes so on your way out we will have the ashes station here so we begin this this joyous time lent is not supposed to be a time of misery but rather a time of renewal in our own lives kind of rebooting our lives to be more focused on jesus and living out the compassion and mercy of jesus so we pause to call to mind our sins but the penitential right is omitted today because that will really take its place in the ashes we will receive let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever let us be seated to listen to god's word a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting in punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber [Music] between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord [Music] [Music] me [Music] have mercy on me o god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipeouts [Music] thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sins [Music] we [Music] foreign [Music] lord for a clean heart create for me o god and a steadfast spirit renewal within me cast me not out from your presence and your holy spirit take not from me [Music] give me back the joy of your salvation that no willing spirits will stay in me o lord open my lips and my mouth shall proclaim your praise [Music] a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord [Music] glory [Music] if today you'll hear his voice [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to saint matthew jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your almsgiving may be secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogue and on street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except to your father who is hidden and to your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord my friends today's gospel is just a perfect blueprint for our lenten journey the three wonderful practices throughout the centuries prayer fasting and almsgiving so we're called to include those for at least one or two of them in our own lenten journey because they are all meant to have us give up something for others we give up something in prayer and fasting and almsgiving so particularly in the work today's world we have a lot of opportunities to be of assistance to others but i would like to focus primarily today on the first one prayer and it is the quality of our prayer that jesus is interested in and so there are three aspects of our prayer that i think we could pay attention to more during our lenten season the first is jesus asked us to pray with faith with belief that god is listening to us that god is hearing us but the element that makes our faith in prayer stronger is our coming to god reconciled to each other eliminating conflicts in our lives taking away obstacles that keep us from one another and so the kind of faith that enhances our prayer is that faith which has laid aside grudges and gossiping and all the rest of the stuff so that's a very important quality for our prayer the second is persistence persistence and that doesn't mean that god hears us better if we keep saying the same thing over and over again no by persistence we mean presenting our needs to god at the same time growing expanding our own hearts so that what we ask for becomes not so focused but a little bit broader for example if i want to pray for a sick relative we pray lord please help aunt jane or uncle john or whoever it might be but then to make it more expansive and all the sick people all who are ill all who are suffering so our persistence means to expand our prayer expand our hearts and then finally the the element that helps make our prayer really important is that we are are really filled with this wondrous expectation and hope that we are really enamored with god's goodness and we don't give up hope we always keep hoping and praying and you know why because we don't know how god will answer our prayer so often when we pray we bring a request to god and also what his response should be god wants us to make our request and lay ourselves before him and let god decide what in the long term is the best way for our prayer to be answered i know in my hospital ministry visiting very ill patients with cancer very often there is not an immediate response to that but you know what is happening broader and broader circles of family of friends are now returning to god so that god's prayer is being answered in ways we never thought of so during our lenten time let us have our own prayer be filled with those very simple but effective elements and then each day a few few moments that we have and some of the best prayer as we've learned through our synod is listening to the lord some quiet time not just rattling off prayers in a book but listening just some quiet listening so my friends as we continue our mass today as we place our gifts of bread and wine upon the altar let us also place our own needs those needs of our friends families loved ones all those intentions we bring but also as pope francis as asked us let us today make our prayer and fasting especially for the suffering people of ukraine and maybe throughout lent that intention might be very high on our list so let us place all of our intentions here in faith and hope trusting in god's love and mercy towards us we make our prayer in jesus name amen blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received we have received the bread we are for you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine work of human hands it will become for us our spiritual drink pray my friends that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father [Music] as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the paschal passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that our self-denial should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and so help us imitate you in your kindness and so we glorify you with countless angels as with one voice of praise we acclaim [Music] oh [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] foreign [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope jose our bishop his assistant bishops and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters we have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles with saint charles boro mayo and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we now pray father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always and let us offer each other a sign of peace [Music] [Music] is [Music] peace [Music] is [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed an act of spiritual communion my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot now receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you [Music] [Music] oh my god [Music] is love of christ joins us [Music] in return [Music] is [Music] is is [Music] may is [Music] oh [Music] yes [Music] me [Music] oh [Music] is merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out your blessing on your servants and those who wear these ashes who are marked with them as they follow the lenten observance they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son amen the lord be with you may almighty god bless you the father and the son and the holy spirit nourish strengthen with our
