[Music] hello everybody welcome to my latest live broadcast today is the 23rd of july it's thursday and the year 2020 is we're still in lockdown living amongst the coveted 19 pandemic and uh working every day very hard to bring you content keep you distracted keep you educated keep you on top of the ball let's use this down time and this boredom to find other things that are interesting and empowering and that's my intent today hello to all my friends in blue joining and some not yet blue i appreciate that very much thanks you guys for uh jumping in early and a couple of couple of quick items one is there's a new windows 10 debloading tool which is a lot more user friendly than the previous one we discussed and i've got a link to that in the video notes and perhaps i'll make a quick tips video on that another quick tip is that the new amd chipset driver has been released a couple of days ago several of you have emailed me to let me know and i appreciate that if you have an amd chip you must get those drivers manually or wait until some point in the future when windows update will deliver it to you at some point maybe a month or two from now so if you want the added security the features compatibility and performance upgrades of an uh the updated amd chipset driver you must seek that out yourself it is not automatic like it is with intel well assuming you have the intel driver updater amd offers no such driver updater except for their graphics cards and even that they only introduced within the last year something nvidia has had for many years so not the slam amd i'm just telling you how it is that's the facts um well still want to say i've had uh on occasion on occasion i'll have some people uh criticize the way i run my business and i will tell you that's a quick way to get yourself banned not only from my channel but for many businesses business owners i have to deal with things you have no comprehension of and if you're looking out if you don't approve of the way a business is working with its customer now i'll give you an example i show you how i work with customers computers here and i've had numerous people over the years say well if you'd have done that to my computer and it's like go away i wouldn't work on your computer and i would i would warn every business about you because you sound like you need psychological help um a business has a business relationship with a customer is not your business unless you are the customer otherwise mind your own business a business that makes routinely bad decisions and is performing poorly will go out of business there are a lot of bad business owners and they're not going to listen to you neither are the good ones and there are business liabilities and there are other uh aspects uh in my videos for example that you know nothing about you don't know about the private conversations and i'll be darned if i'm gonna share my uh repairs with you only to have you criticize me as though that was your computer because i if you're somebody like that i wouldn't work on your computer i would i would suggest you take your business elsewhere or do it yourself those are people with deep deep psychological problems and i want to warn all of you if you catch yourself doing it stop you will never ever improve a business by offering an uh your opinion about how they run their business by observing how they dealt with another customer that will never work out for you take your business somewhere else that's what i advise you to do please please please don't make an attempt to stand up for a customer you don't know anything about it is profoundly abusive and bullying and it is uh very offensive for example if i walked in and found a sales clerk at mcdonald's chewing out some customer uh at the counter and i'm walking mid conversation it's not my business i don't know what started it i don't know what happened stay out of it adding fuel to the fire is only going to end up getting you involved in something you shouldn't be involved in and potentially uh if you don't leave on your own you may be required to leave and banned forever so think about what you're doing think about what your authority is if you're not an authoritative figure if you're not law enforcement if you're not a you know somebody who's a lawmaker it has nothing to do with you mind your own business i mind my business you mind yours everybody will be happy so this came up again and i had to ban somebody and it's just frustrating because they didn't change anything they ended up getting themselves banned for no good reason like that's the hill you want to die on and nothing's changed other than you know it's upsetting that i take my time my money and my effort to demonstrate to film the work i do for my customers who it is my responsibility to keep happy it is my liability for the decisions i make and it's my consequences for my actions and then have somebody judge that without any other information other than what was filmed wow just wow there's seriously something psychologically wrong so please don't please please don't be that person and if you are never bring me your business i don't want it i do not want that i will practically pay you i won't i'll just call the police and send a cease and desist for that type of harassment all right uh let's see we had a few uh i'm gonna get into the wi-fi thing here in a minute this this comes up every once in a while and every time it's gonna come up i'm gonna talk about it in the attempt that if you're getting ready to you're thinking oh i think i'm gonna type that don't do it it's not going to work out well for you you can leave on your own or i can kick you out or just keep your thoughts to yourself when it comes to that stuff if you don't like the way i run my business don't go to my business if you don't like the way anybody runs their business don't use their business but don't tell them how to run their business unless they ask you all right a couple of contributions have come in and let's see we've got oh i see marty kicked us off here with a five dollar contribution hey marty i hope you're you're doing well i hope you're feeling better alan wimp has contributed to two pounds it was his birthday yesterday happy birthday alan he says have a coke on me pal i had a good birthday all right nell and i i think i will thank you very much i got my coca-cola here i'll get emails from time to time telling people will be telling me that coke isn't healthy you should get your blood checked you should get your blood sugar checked somebody sent me a diabetes kit this assumption that again we go back to these assumptions you only see what i choose to show you on camera i'm not taking the camera with me to the doctor's office and showing you my blood test results and how often i go so well i appreciate that your heart is in the right place it's offensive you don't know me i don't know you you don't know me well enough to suggest what i'm doing is harming me if you want to ask questions that's fine you know hey do you monitor your blood sugar yes i do stuff like that i don't mind but when it's sort of like all assumed and you don't know me at all you just know what i choose for you to know on these videos uh again it's it's this overreach it's bizarre and it's very uh offensive so please i in that case i understand what the intent is but uh that's not the way to express it believe me okay uh getting back to the contributions daryn gilhom has contributed a pound james flattery has contributed five dollars he says your subjects are always interesting and informative thanks carrie rick hubbard has contributed five pounds he says have you eaten all 32 packets yet well i've had to throw away about five of them so far sadly because the the bags were punctured and uh when i open them up and i bite into them they're stale they're gross and i have to throw them away but i do try them i don't assume they're bad so that was not a good way to pack them i've already lost five bags i'm probably eating about five or six so i think i got a little about 20 more to go thank you again for sending the crisps and the 200r case that's very kind of you alan shaver has contributed five dollars john craig with five pounds he says my business is my business and your business is your business and if you want advice you can ask for it yeah that's pretty simple john you know he's a very generous uh contributor here as well and i appreciate the support you know be be kind and supportive i'm telling you anytime you're critical of somebody who didn't ask for it and especially if it's business that doesn't involve you you are really really overstepping you have no authority to do that and if you don't like something walk away from it just walk away because it ends it ends a couple of different ways it can escalate in person into a vocal argument leading to fists and violence to any end until one or the other walks away or is taken away you know in an ambulance that's just stupid it's absolutely stupid that that is a sign of two very insecure people that need the other person to agree with them in order for the for them to feel like they're right i don't care if you think the earth is flat i really don't care i'm not gonna fight you over it i'm not gonna argue with you about it because it doesn't change anything my world is still the same my bills are still the same and uh i don't lose money and i don't gain money if you agree with me if you're confident in your beliefs it will you will not require other people to agree with you you will seek out other people who agree with you trying to change somebody's mind is like somebody trying to change yours think about that it's not going to likely be happening anytime soon unless you both agreed that we're going to discuss this and share uh ideas which you know there's a time and a place but that's usually done between people face to face typically it's not something strangers do on the internet that typically ends well so i'm just trying to give you some tips to have a better time on the internet better to make friends than enemies i don't know what this human condition is for conflict it seems like the vast majority of people that that i seem to look around me and see they just like conflict they just like it they like violence they like hurting they like bullying they like being authoritative they think what they have to say is important and yet they are nobody of any consequence that anybody's ever heard of they have no position of authority and they have this self-inflated sense of importance which is very very strange and i'm suggesting for the benefit of everybody keep those negative thoughts to yourself and seek out others that are birds of a feather like you where you can get along and if you want to join a debate club because you enjoy a healthy debate or you make friends with somebody who also enjoys a healthy debate well that's seeking out somebody like you don't force other people uh don't force yourself onto other people so uh if you do that if you choose to that is your choice but i'm telling you it will very rarely ever pay off in a positive way and the consequences of it can be quite severe just watch the news and it's really if you really think about it it's just the person that insists on doing it is very insecure in their thoughts and they require the other person to agree with them so if you're on the opposite side of it don't take their bait turn your back and walk away and in my case it's banning people they could have said hey i don't like this guy and they could have just walked away themselves but when they choose not to they're very insecure and so i have to push them out which is really stupid i don't know what is there to be gained i don't know why it's worth it for somebody to do that other than this human condition of conflict in any event enough of that a couple other contributions came in i've got uh two pounds came in from thomas robinson with uh he says excellent computer videos carrie god bless thank you david griswold contributed five bucks he says just because it's thursday stay safe and well kerry hey thank you david you rick hubbard contributed three pounds again he says five bags open blame customs yeah now they were i think they were smashed open like they were compressed like i don't see any physical tears in the bags but they don't have any air in them you know you can tell they're different than the other bags and then when i do open them there's got to be a tear or a hole somewhere in those bag of chips or crisps that has caused them to go stale which is unfortunate but there were a lot of bags in there so and again i really appreciate the effort and the thoughtfulness you put into that rick that was very very kind of you pat mullins with two euros says uh sure what's two euro hey thank you pat and ronaldo torres with five dollars is carrie i bought two mouse pads and i got them already right on right on somebody else had received a mouse pad and a picture of it is freeze i hope the crease when it shipped it's folded to save some money if the crease doesn't come out please let us know and uh give it like a week or two if you know delay it flat if the crease doesn't come out and it bothers you please let us know we'll get it replaced for you thanks you guys for for all the kindness and all the support okay the subject of today's video is gonna happen in just a minute ten dollars just came in from husky boy 1993 vr chat gaming ten dollars so kerry i've been watching us since 2014. i love your videos here's ten dollars for your coke well that's a case of coke thank you and rick lakes with five dollars again i want to remind you your contributions help keep me sponsor free i have roboform as a sponsor currently and i'm very happy with them as a sponsor because they don't tell me what to say or what to do or fleece me in any way shape or form i love that love it complete freedom and trust it's very important in a relationship i also want to remind you it's very unusual for a youtube channel to grow as mine has and to have an amazing community that has been created all organically there's been no search engine optimization there's been no marketing there's no manipulation everything here on this channel is real and organic and i intend to keep it that way forever what i want to remind you of and this is the danger of youtube youtube in my opinion is slowly becoming just one giant commercial i lose a lot of respect for other tech channels that grab the the check from the corporation to do a review now look if a company wants to send me a product to evaluate i'm all for it but i never get paid for that never i'll take the product i'll evaluate it if i like the product i will buy it just like you would what what ends up happening is because youtube revenues are so low and people say well if you ask for contributions you're panhandling which i disagree with i'm not panhandling here i've not asked for any contributions i will acknowledge when they come in and i will say thank you but i'm not i'm not asking you for them but but because you're doing it i will also tell you that it gives me more freedom better camera equipment and the ability to make more videos because you're doing it and then i don't have to charge you for the videos so what do you do if you want to make videos it's getting expensive the camera equipment and all the production equipment's expensive my internet's expensive and i'm not generating any revenue from my business when i'm making a youtube video right generally speaking and uh what do you do when you need to bring in more revenue you can charge people for your videos but you might say oh i don't want to charge people for my videos all right well you can ask people for contribution well i don't want a panhandle or you can start taking checks from questionable companies to promote potentially illegal stolen or gray market software or you could take money from companies that ask you to review their products but the review has to be approved by the company before you can publish it so your review can't i don't know i'm not going to say it can't be honest but how can you as a viewer know the difference between an honest review and a paid review and then if it's a paid review how do you know that there's no bias there because if you get paid by the company to make a review you want to go back to the well and get some more money from that same company that's not going to happen if you're generally speaking that's not going to happen again if you're not kind to their product they they're not paying you for fun they're paying you to generate sales so i'm watching these youtube videos and i'm i'm seeing the ads that start before the videos and then when the video comes on it's nothing but a big advertisement and this is tech channel after tech channel after tech channel and i'm like what's happening youtube is becoming nothing more than a great big advertisement corporations are tricking people effectively deceiving and manipulating because youtube the audience you the audience because the content creator is selling you you're being sold the content creator is saying i've got uh 400 000 subscribers so you need to pay me x amount of dollars they're making a deal and using you as leverage in that deal and they're not necessarily sharing honest true reviews because the consequences of honesty may result in losing that deal in fact it may result in not only losing the deal but being unable to publish the video because again if you're accompanied and you're paying somebody to make content about your product you're going to put a stipulation that i need to see this video before you release it and you need to agree to make any corrections we request and generally there's a deadline you need to publish the video by this date and time well that's just an advertisement that's a commercial most of the time now obviously it's possible that you can enjoy a company's product and get paid to promote it but now how can you as the viewer be sure because if there's constant product after product after product that's being paid for by corporations then i would suggest that that content creator isn't very picky it's really not as picky as me on the other hand they are creating content that they otherwise would not be able to afford do without asking for contributions or having people pay because youtube is the pay on youtube is very very low very low you know you need like a million subscribers if you want to do this full time i would say you need about 1400 videos in your library and so you just have to keep making videos making videos making videos and letting it grow or you have to manipulate search engine optimization techniques and you know all this other stuff to try and do enforce and manipulate and control your audience which i i just i cannot get on board with it but but what i can do is help to make you aware what's going on with the youtube content creator platform and it's not just youtube channels it's uh i mean uh content uh it's not just technical content on youtube it's almost anything makeup or you know what have you mr beast on youtube seems like he he does a a wonderful job and gives to charities and and all of it seems a little too good to be true and i don't know what the percentages are but i i very much enjoy the spirit of those videos and then i immediately start losing respect journalistic integrity from tech channels specifically that continually take checks from manufacturers to do reviews from hardware to software whatever it is you'll see it very rarely here in fact it's really only happened once and that's with roboform and i use that product anyway so it it's not that just doing it is a problem it's doing it over and over and over again it's got to make me wonder you know is this person not that picky were they just in it for the money and you need to know that if you subscribe to a channel like that they're selling you subscribers don't equal more money in the sense of youtube revenue subscribers subscribers only equal more money when selling your your value to us the sponsor youtube pays you based on how many minutes of video that viewer has watched so you might have a million subscribers but if only 10 percent of them are active you'll find most of your views are not coming from your subscribers and therefore most of your money is not coming from your subscribers so the business behind youtube is is a kind of a complex one when it comes to my particular value system my morals and ethics are mine and it's not for me to put them on to anybody else but rather to share with you my thoughts and concerns when i'm watching youtube channels i'm looking for something away from television and movies which are very corporate and obviously very paid for and at least with television like sitcoms and and dramas they're telling a story and then breaking that story up interrupted by the commercials that pay for it it's not just all about the product from start to beginning as many youtube tech channels content uh can be so i'm trying to be very very cautious of wading into those waters and find the balance between um sponsorship and products that i truly believe in and then if i'm going to sell you then i'm going to make sure that you get part of that profit by offering for example i require the company to offer a discount i'm not going to sell you and then say that you don't get anything but the content i'm going to say okay we're going to make this content on the condition that my viewers get something they have to receive some benefit i'm going to share the profit with you so in the case of roboform that's 60 off that's not offered anywhere else and it won't be offered for very long just till the end of august now somebody might say oh that was very clever how you just work that in okay it's genuine though you've got to use judgment to define what is genuine from what is manipulated and i will do my best to always be genuine that is my promise to you and i hope that's why my channel will grow i hope that my viewers will see a value in that and understand that there are many temptations a lot of checks are being offered to me right now from companies i would never use in my business and therefore i will not subject you to them for i'd say any amount of money but i mean clearly everybody's got a price but these companies don't have that kind of money so that'll never be an issue um in the meantime my thanks to uh abdul azeem patel just contributed fifty dollars thank you abdul thank you very much david smith with five pounds says hey carrie keeping it real and honest one of the few please never change i'll do my best david thank you for supporting the channel michael dain you're the man contributes 10 bucks he says thank you kerry for your videos when i have a problem i look at your video for help thanks again for your videos and guidance here's 10 bucks for pizza i see you got the coke just had the pizza last night thank you though terrell cochran has contributed five dollars it says just built my amd 3700x with 32 gigs of ram with a gigabyte b550 motherboard and a sapphire 5600 xt using a one terabyte sabrin nvme in a 200r case and got compatible ram off the qvl list nice that sounds great terrell it's uh sounds like a really good system i will say my honesty has gotten me into a lot of trouble a lot of places don't want to deal with honesty i was uh once reprimanded at a job for letting a customer in another department know that his computer that i was repairing was taken away from me and that they wanted to format and reinstall the operating system because i was taking too long to find what was causing the problem which turned out to be a real simple fix but besides that i hadn't gotten there yet and the customer had data on it and that customer was a very high-end uh the the client was a very highly paid employee of the organization much highly that employee's salary and the data they created was worth probably four or five of what i got paid right four to five times when i got paid so i'm not going to really nearly wipe the customer's data and say well it's your problem you didn't properly put it on the server like you're supposed to which was the attitude of the person in charge of that of the department i worked for so when it was taken from me against my objection i called the customer and said you better call that my supervisor's boss because he intends to wipe your hard drive and claim that any data you lose is your problem so you better right now time is of the essence they've taken it from me there's nothing else i can do well he did shortly thereafter i was called into that supervisor boss's office and um it was explained to me that if i have a problem like that in the future i should go directly to his boss to to my supervisor's boss the guy who's you know bringing me into his office go directly to him and not air our dirty laundry to other departments like i don't care like that's just politics all i cared about was the customer data and customer respect and that customer needed to know what was about to happen and uh i just said okay but internally i was like how about this just doesn't happen how about you put policies and procedures in place that ensure that there won't be a need for anybody to ever do that so it didn't ever happen it never did happen again but i will tell you my honesty has gotten me in a lot of trouble because well not in a lot of trouble but it's it's caused some pains because it doesn't play well with uh people looking good in the politics of a corporation right even though it's honest they don't want honesty they're not paying that was my message i got was we're not paying you to be honest i don't know i mean they didn't say it but that's it's kind of like what they said between the lines and so my my time in corporate america as i shifted from one company to another was the same sort of issues and customers love me every customer love me the bosses you know some not so much but i always i'm always driven to do what is what i feel is the right thing and damn the consequences because if i have to pay a price to do the right thing it's worth it and if i get rewarded for doing the wrong thing i cannot sleep at night it bothers me it just blame my mother it's how i was raised i cannot i cannot in good conscience uh rest well it will bother me until i make it right that's kind of ocd i have to make it right at any cost well at nearly any cost so it's just something that drives me brendan looney contributes five pounds acm dad with two dollars thanks you guys for your contribution he says can i use your videos to teach kids at home yes please do some some lessons however have to be experienced right you can sit there and you can tell somebody about your experiences and they'll say yeah but that's you i'm not you i'm different you have to give people the freedom to figure that out but you can let them know you can let them know i'll tell you this is the potential here this is what could happen and you should be aware of it now decide and if it works out well for you i'm happy for you and if it doesn't at least you didn't get blindsided and maybe you'll make a different decision next time abdul azim patel with another contribution 20 this time he says wow the data wiping yes because officially the policy in the corporation was it's your responsibility to back up your data it's not the it department's responsibility but it's not a big deal for the it department you know what i mean like that's just being a jerk there was no reason for it ted has contributed 50 s-e-k i can't remember what that is he says i truly appreciate the way you came out clear for us to understand and thank you well thank you ted i appreciate your contribution your support and being a part of this amazing community we've built here jezzy mcloy contributes five dollars this is kerry i got an nvidia gtx 1650 with the same displayport issue as mike's pc but it works fine with dvi or hdmi on a different monitor i would contact the manufacturer definitely check your displayport cable but i contacted gigabyte way back on monday today's thursday i finally got a response they approved the rma for mike's old graphics card and tomorrow i plan on taking that over to uh fedex i'll let fedex box it for me they'll pack it and box it for me the video card will not go back in the original box because i don't have it it'll go into an anti-static bag and i will instruct fedex to put it in a box as small as possible that allows for two inches of packing all the way around bubble wrap whatever they want to use i'll give them the address and rma number it'll probably cost me 20 25 for the packing and the shipping to ship fedex ground i'll have a tracking number and then within two weeks i should have that graphics card back mike has already replaced the graphics card so i will use it on another upcoming project thank you to jason cordrey jason sent me a cougar for 400 series mesh case he wants me to review it so i'll take a look at that ryan out nevada sent me a leon lee case he wants me to review so all that will be coming up hopefully in the next week or two um al has says sck is swedish krona thank you i i really wish i knew how to pronounce your name al if you can write out the pronunciation of your name because i i see you often and i'm not quite sure i would like to make the effort to pronounce your name correctly david smith contributes five pounds he says carrie it's a sign of times that honesty is frowned upon well that's just in the in the case where honesty is frowned upon is all politics everything i'm talking about is politics it's about people's egos it's about how people think they're being seen it's about people obviously wanting to hide nobody's going to be happy if you expose what they're doing if what they're doing is not on more computer parts just arrived i apologize for the interruption they they seem to know when i'm live and then that's when they decide they want to deliver i'm home all afternoon all morning nothing and then go live and i'm live not even what 30 minutes and there they are but it's here it's here jose and veronica lopez have contributed two dollars it says love your attitude mr kerry well thank you um i'm glad that you appreciate and value like i said rather than argue with people if you don't get along with them if you don't agree with them find other people that you do don't try and change anybody's mind their decisions their consequences your decisions or your consequences don't waste your time with people who have a different value system if you're going to argue about it and that's why i left corporate america because once i figured it wasn't just one company i didn't know i was a kid is it just this company let's try another company no there how about over here how about over here about a government agency oh the government agency made the companies look like a dream you don't even know politics and bureaucracy until you work at a government agency holy smokes john craig has contributed five pounds he says carrie i've experienced the corporate life and they can shove it where then he says oops i suppose the sun don't shine huh yeah um i just um i you know there's this manipulation that occurs in corporate america that i've personally experienced where they would counter what i'm saying by suggesting i'm not a team player which is preposterous it's a manipulation of wording in order to deflect the responsibility that i'm calling them out on and so what i have found is rather than force myself on them and this goes all the way up the chain this it's not like i can say well i'll just make it my mission to take your job so i can run this department because now i'm going to have to answer to a boss or a board that is also a different value system than well it's just not going to work out now i got to take that guy's job and i got to get on the board and now i'm going to disagree with everybody on the board and then the board's going to outnumber me and kick me out so that's the best i can hope for it's very very cynical however there are good companies to work for there are companies that will take care of you with the politics that aren't so extreme unfortunately i didn't have enough patience to keep going from company to company to company to find such an organization though i have friends that have worked for some corporations for very long time and are very happy where they're at i witnessed a co-worker move up in the company by never arguing with the preposterous requests he would just say okay and then he wouldn't do it and that guy moved up it was the most bizarre thing i'd ever seen they would pile more work that he could possibly do and he'd say okay and then they'd say how's that coming so i haven't gotten to it yet and he never did he as far as i know he never did until they eventually had to sign it to somebody else because it wasn't meeting a deadline but he never said he wasn't going to do it he never said he was too busy to do it he smiled he nodded and he said okay and he moved up that company i don't have it in me to do that but wow what an interesting thing to witness this guy go from down here above you know we were together and he went above me and above me i mean i was like i guess that's how it's done at least at that company yeah it's pretty fascinating see if they teach you that at college alvin shaver says i've been a boss i've been a supervisor and i've been an employee a lot less pressure and stress being a regular employee well for sure absolutely no doubt that's why you get paid more as a supervisor the boss has to deal with all these very important decisions and a lot of pressure and every boss has a boss an employee you can replace an employee pretty easily boss is a little more difficult yeah for sure that's true jeff jankowicz contributes ten dollars he says thanks for sharing your vast knowledge i always transfer customers data from old drives to new god bless jeff that's a choice you don't have to do that right you can let your customer know if you go into any professional corporate computer repair shop they will have a sign on the wall we're not responsible for your data it's your responsibility to back it up everyone's got that disclaimer in corporate america in computer repair they have to because you also have customers that will try and take advantage they'll lie they'll manipulate they'll cheat find loopholes in the system and find a way so they have to protect themselves against the bad guys on the flip side david says my company was a stand-alone business and then they sold it to a high power company and they fired all the old people and hired all new people yeah that's politics stewart wants to know if i've ever read any scott adams and dilbert books absolutely yes back in the 90s there's a guy named scott adams for those of you unfamiliar and he wrote a book he wrote a couple of books but they were based on a cartoon series called dilbert dilbert and there was a dilbert character right back here speaking of which this was sent to me was it uh patrick that sent this i can't remember who sent this to me it's been back there a long time that's dilbert you guys might remember dilbert from back in the days hey there's marty hey marty he says sorry i had to eat well no eating is good especially when you're sick eat let me go back in my other room here and see if i have those dilbert books i think they're on my bookshelf they are books i will never throw away because they speak the truth in sarcastic comedy uh yeah yeah how many do i have one two three now i don't know how true these books still stand today with the times have changed you know obviously since then but they're pretty dusty so here's a few of them i'm sure they're available on amazon these are comedy classics and they're funny because they're true like if you've ever worked in the workplace then you will relate look at the dust wow that's pretty bad i guess it's been a while so here's uh the joy of work dilbert's guide to finding happiness at the expense of your co-workers here is the dilbert principle this is a fantastic if there's any one to read it's this one and then finally i've got the dilbert future and the back it says there will be a huge market in the future for technology products that help workers goof off and still get paid well he's uh dead on that's true i've never seen when i was in corporate america we didn't have cell phones and you weren't allowed to make personal calls and i see people messing about with their personal cellular phones everywhere i go from you know fast food restaurants to uh in the corporate workplace and how they allow that no idea no idea how that's allowed and many of my uh clients that are offices allow their employees to use their phones they don't require them to stow the phone or to set it uh you know to leave it at the door if you will or to they're in fact allowed to get on the network they asked me to configure it so they can connect their phones to the network so they're not eating into their data plan on their phone it's crazy to me it's crazy that certainly was not allowed in my time time to bring out the leaf blower yeah htmpcc says it's not only corporate america it's the corporate western world nothing but compliments for your presentations regards from the netherlands hey thank you yes i i do believe that's true there's a a great book i read um they talked about it not too long ago about the automobile industry and the the misdirection of the people in charge making all the decisions all about making profits right now and what damage it causes to the community and we're gonna lay off a thousand people and that's gonna bring our profits up and then the company's products go down the tubes and the people that made those decisions you know take an early retirement package and then three four years later when the consequences start hitting that company because it takes time the person who made that decision is long gone it's somebody else's mess to clean up and then they're looking for a shortcut on how to generate a quarterly revenue to impress the shareholders or keep them happy there's only you know if a doctor says you've got to lose 20 pounds so you cut off a leg there's only so many times you can do that so it doesn't address the problem and quite often that's the decision being made let's let's find the quick easy fix and then we'll be out of here before the consequences will cash out eric kaufman with a five dollar contribution says goofing off and still getting paid i must have missed that memo at my last job but i get to goof off now and i just lose billable hours probably the difference in being self-employed so yeah there's a there's a great series of books about it and um it is uh if that interests you check them out if you've never read them before because it certainly was true at the time they were written which i think was the 90s so they're about 25 years old or so but but still at least for me as i remember them hilarious because of how relatable they were are you feeling better marty i mean i'm seeing you more so i'm assuming that's because you're feeling better can i call you can you talk on the phone are you i'm sure if you have a shortness of breath it would be difficult to talk let me know all right so getting to the subject of today's video a question i get from common everyday ordinary pc users is all about wi-fi how do i add wi-fi they're very puzzled about wi-fi a lot of people don't realize that wi-fi is not fm radio like many people think if you just add a wi-fi adapter you get wi-fi they don't realize that they need a router they don't realize that the speed of the router and the performance of the router affect the speed and performance of the wi-fi adapter and vice versa they both have to be at the same level in order to achieve maximum performance and throughput and range so whatever that level is the wi-fi standards were always very technical whether it was 802.11b 802.11g 802.11 ac what does that mean so then the wi-fi standards committee said we're just going to call it wi-fi 6. five five five wi-fi six the next generation will be wi-fi seven this is easier for the general end user to understand however what does it mean well what it means is if you have a wi-fi adapter that's wi-fi six and you connect it to a router that's wi-fi four then you're only gonna be able to reach speeds of up to four you won't be able to utilize all of the benefits and features range performance of wi-fi six until you upgrade the router to wi-fi six the opposite is true the router is a wi-fi six and the adapter is a wi-fi four whichever one is the slowest that's the speed it's going to run then there's a question of how many people can jump on the wi-fi at the same time so if you're in a big household by big i mean you've got a lot of wi-fi devices maybe televisions kids with smartphones and everybody's at home at the same time especially now during this pandemic and everybody's on the wi-fi depending on you know if you bought a cheap router hey it's 40 bucks like what a deal i got you're going to find that wi-fi to be painfully slow and that it's only pretty much serving one person at a time as quickly as it can here's yours you're sure it's doing it very fast but one person at a time then they have multi-stream routers the multi-stream routers allow for simultaneous concurrent connections to send and receive data at the same time which improves performance and those also generally also have better range and then you've got mesh routers to extend around the house for weak spots because you've got signal strength signal strength is going to play a role i don't care how nice of a stereo you have if you're turning the dial and you can barely get a station from another city coming into your radio it doesn't matter how good your amplifier is or your speakers it's going to sound staticky and noisy well i guess not staticky anymore because everything's digital but it's the the quality of your signal is also as important as the quality of the equipment so for example i don't find many people have a big screen tv and then watch sd video on it all day it's terrible if you look at a television from the 1980s and you watch a video of vhs recording of a television show from the 1980s on a tv from the 1980s it's fine it's not hd but it's fine but if you watch that same content on a modern television it's like taking a magnifying glass to the screen so many kids will be like how could you watch this in the 80s well we we weren't watching it with a magnifying glass we were watching it the way it was meant to be seen and it's perfectly fine uh granted it's square and not rectangular and the resolution's a bit lower but we were happy to have it and we didn't know any better in other words we didn't have anything better to compare it to other than perhaps going to the movies so when you watch this content on a modern uh hd television the higher definition of television is 4k 8k the worse other content looks because it's essentially getting magnified exponentially and it becomes nearly unwatchable in my opinion i can watch old episodes of married with children on youtube and i'm like it just didn't look this bad you know why does it look so bad i have to think about it i'm like oh i'm watching it under a magnifying glass but it was broadcast in stereo the audio was fine granted it's all better now but it wasn't that bad back then but trying to take a piece of hardware like a wi-fi adapter and shopping strictly on price you're going to pay for it with your time and with the convenience of what range you have now because i'm a nerd and because i'm able i have a 500 router which is ridiculous it's absolutely overkill but when it comes to wi-fi because the strategies not the strategies the standards continually change i wanted a top of the line router that i wasn't going to have to replace anytime soon because if they improve wi-fi better than what i have there's really not much benefit to me at this point because i've got more than i need if i would buy just what i needed then as my needs would change then i'd have to buy another one and buy another one and buy another one so i'd rather buy one 500 router that'll last me three or four years than buy three or four hundred and fifty dollar routers because not only is that a pain in the butt to reconfigure every single time but it's also cheaper to just pay for it up front pay a little more pay a lot more later you know or you just suffer you just live with it and some people don't care but if you're somebody who cares and it's important to you understand what the value of it is financially and then like i've seen my router on sale for 450 dollars okay that's a good deal buy it i'm not saying you have to spend the retail price but if you're shopping on price alone you will probably end up getting what you paid for i've seen people upgrade their internet cards i haven't seen this in a while because ethernet cards that i say an internet card an ethernet card uh are generally all all gigabit and one of the most common reasons when i would ask a customer why you know they get a support call how come this doesn't work i said what are you doing i'm changing out my my ethernet card my networking card why because i only had a 10 megabit card or 100 megabit card and now i'm going to a gigabit card no no i understood that i'm asking you why they say oh so my internet will go faster i know how fast is your internet well i don't know i go well most people at this time if you were paying top dollar you got 100 megabit like most people were getting 60 30. so if you had 100 megabit card you're fine you're not your internet's not going any faster with wi-fi however it could potentially make your internet faster because you might be paying for a high-speed internet and you may only be actually using 20 of it because you're too cheap or whatever what i'm that's that's wrong for me to say that but you haven't replaced your old wi-fi router or your old wi-fi adapter so they're running at the slower speeds and much lower than what your internet can deliver but the internet service provider is going to charge you the same every month regardless so the only person you're hurting is yourself so when we talk about adding wi-fi to a computer there's a lot of different ways it can be done now whether that's a desktop or a laptop i've had people call me and say can you fix the wi-fi on my laptop and in most cases they've turned the wi-fi off there's usually a a function f key like f12 f10 f4 that turns the wi-fi on and off for a physical switch on the front side or back of the laptop that turns the wi-fi on and off that switch exists because of the portable nature of a laptop that you can save your battery life like for example on an airplane although planes that i do offer wi-fi but if you're not using the wi-fi you can flip that off and get better battery life or if you're somewhere like in a cafe and you're afraid of somebody snooping and connecting to your computer without your knowledge by flipping that wi-fi off you're also securing the laptop and preventing anybody from from doing that i mean they can still look over your shoulder and see what you're doing but at least they can't snoop on you you know uh wirelessly apart from looking over your shoulder or watching the reflection in the window behind you lots of ways people snoop on each other um but in the case of a wi-fi adapter going bad in a laptop it doesn't make sense to pay anybody in my opinion to fix it if the laptop's out of warranty buy yourself a usb wi-fi adapter plug it in same is true for the little touchpad and the keyboard on your laptop just buy a usb keyboard or mouse and be done with it you don't have to pay to repair that a laptop that's out of warranty unless it's a top of the line laptop it probably isn't worth putting any more money into it that's the advice i would give you if you called me with that particular problem now when it comes to a desktop pc you've got many so you've got several options on how you can add wi-fi there's some clever things that you can do to work around adding wi-fi now of course you can always add a usb wi-fi adapter now usb wi-fi adapters they can sell for as little as 12 or over a hundred dollars there's the wi-fi right there what's the difference well first you gotta consider you're gonna have this big bulky thing hanging out the back of your computer or the side of your laptop it's very easy to hit it and break the usb right off of it so that's why they offer a cradle on some of the more expensive units so you can plug the wi-fi adapter into the cradle and then you can plug the cradle into your usb port and then this is often magnetized on many of them not always that one's that one's not magnetized sometimes they're magnetic and you can move it around to get the best signal that's the other benefit if i were to plug this into the back of a desktop computer like this one here and this computer was up against a wall you'd see i'd have to have quite a bit of space now between the computer and the wall now i don't have to have the antennas out i could it you know i could close these antennas down but in doing so i will reduce my signal strength but if i'm right next to the router i'm going to get a strong signal on the other hand if i'm right next to the router a wired cable will always be faster more secure and more consistent with the the connection and speed a lot of things can interfere with wi-fi a lot uh somebody might get their wi-fi up and running and it's great and then one day it's not great anymore and it may be because a neighbor just upgraded their wi-fi and they're on the same channel and their signal's overlapping your signal and it's causing you all kinds of grief and you have no idea why because it was working great until it was nothing changed but it did change you just didn't know you'll never have that problem with a wired connection i don't like it when i have to interview somebody here on youtube and they're using wi-fi you can tell from the con the connection with simon from roboform he was on wi-fi i really really encouraged him to run a cable it wasn't possible based on his setup and so you saw what happened that is pretty much the way i experience it it's different than zoom you know it's different wi-fi on zoom is fine what we were doing um [Music] you should have seen it before like that was the good version you should have seen it with uh what did we try uh google meetup it was it would almost look like dial-up so you gotta ask yourself how important is wi-fi to me is it just i don't do that much so i'll just get something cheap or is it i can't get enough so let me make an investment in this so i don't have to worry about it for long for many years i was going to say a long time and i realized you know what's a long time a long time for a router five six years so when we're going to add wi-fi to a desktop usb is super easy again the the cheaper wi-fi adapter where did i put it isn't going to run as fast or have the range this one has a little built-in antenna some don't even have that some just have the little usb part and of course that affects their range and if your computer's up against a wall you're you're going to seriously hinder the signal strength because of the wall but if it's good enough for you great then it works for you there's no best solution here but let me keep going because it gets even more creative you can install a card in these slots on a given motherboard and a desktop computer and once again these cards come in varying abilities so this card this is a good middle of the range card it's not cheap it's not expensive it's right down the middle that's an ac 1300 from tp-link and you see that little tiny connector right there that would go into one of those little tiny slots or it can even go into the big slot it just kind of wastes the rest of the big slot but it will work in there and all the links for all of these products they're all in the video notes below the video but this is um if you're just an average customer of mine and you're doing business work or whatever this is perfect for you in my opinion for most of my clients but this in this little teeny tiny box is also a wi-fi adapter and if i open this up i'll oh no this is not a wi-fi adapter these are cables to a wi-fi what did i do with the wi-fi hold on it's it's really tiny and i have apparently misplaced it because it's so tiny even where i put it hold on i will i swear that was in that box so there's a little tiny wi-fi adapter that's used in laptops and tablets and i have some here ah here they are okay it wasn't going crazy and these are made by intel and other companies and this is what one looks like and they're fairly inexpensive if i open this up if i can open it up let me get a razor let's get this open they're not all packaged like this this is an intel ax 200 wi-fi 6 module so wi-fi 6 currently is the the the leading standard and in this little static bag if you look there's a little tiny chip in there kind of looks like an m.2 uh solid state drive but much much shorter now there are several motherboard chip sets that optionally offer you the ability to plug one of these into a desktop computer the h370 chipset quite often will offer that connector it's right here and then the screws right there so you clearly can't put a solid state drive in there because it's not deep enough it doesn't go long enough and that's exactly for this little adapter let me take it out of the anti-static bag and show it to you this is what the card looks like this traditionally as i mentioned this would go into a laptop or a tablet but it is possible on like an h370 and there's a couple other chip sets as well and you'll have to look at your motherboard specs where that plugs in just like an nvme drive would and it secures exactly the same way but it has no antenna and if you look very carefully you'd have to go very very close right at the edge of my finger there's two little tiny well they look kind of like little black squares but those are like snap buttons and what you would do is you would order the wires which i have here so you go okay that's pretty cheap that's 20 bucks but then you gotta buy the cable that's like five bucks and you'll see that this little cable has these little snaps on one end and then it's got these what appear to be brass fittings for copper i'm not sure what metal that's used on this end so this is the end that your external antennas plug into they screw on to this end and then this end which is extraordinarily tiny you'd have to get most of us will have to get some glasses to figure out one side of this has a little hole in it there it is and it's got a little pin you can actually you can bend that pin if you're not careful and that will snap right onto that little spot right there and i will probably have to get a pair of pliers or something and my glasses to really see this and if you're working on the inside of a laptop and you're doing this after this is installed boy it can be a real challenge with other things in your way so this is about as easy as it gets just working open air holding in my hand but i i will have to get glasses because i i honestly i i kind of see it but it's so tiny magnification regardless of how good your vision is i'm sure magnification will help all of us if i align that correctly i should be able to push it straight on and feel it snap or click into place now there are some tools maybe some needle nose pliers or something you could use but you've got to be very cautious because it's very small and pretty easy to damage what you don't want to do is you don't want to slide it over remember there's a small little pin inside of there so it has to go up right exactly over the fitting and then you push straight down that's a real challenge it doesn't help when the cable's trying to turn on you which is what it's doing to me right now and the cable should when it's on there it should swivel so that you can adjust the cable and route it accordingly so it's not like it has to go completely straight up and down vertically or horizontally you can see the struggle is real this would be like an intel nook or your laptop things like that i will tell you that my regular reading glasses really aren't strong enough i need something even more powerful so i'm going to get out the big magnifiers here and see if that oh now i can see i don't know why this is so difficult there it just snapped on that's what it looks like and then we would do the same thing with the other one so you get to do this twice so so so so i can swivel this one you see how i can swivel that cable i will swivel it down and out of the way so i have better access there all right so these would be the two wires that then connect to the wi-fi adapter as i've demonstrated now you need basically an i o panel whether you drill holes in the one you've got now so that you can secure these to the back of the computer then you need to buy the antennas so this is about a 13 antenna kit and the great thing about this antenna kit is it will work with any wi-fi adapter that you've got now that has two antennas these fittings are universal there may be some exceptions but overall these fittings are the industry standard so if you've got for example this tp-link card and those antennas are jetting out the back and preventing you from pushing your computer closer to the wall or because of the wall it's interfering with your signal strength you could buy a separate antenna unscrew these antennas from the back of the card put this on instead and then put this on your computer with the two antennas which you can adjust once again to get the best signal for yourself and put it on your computer oh and that's magnetized some are some are not and it even has a wall mounting holes on the back if you want to mount it on the wall and then you can just run those cables down the same screws that are on the back of this card are the same screw fittings that we just attached to this little wi-fi adapter and those will just simply secure on but the piece that i'm missing is the back plate so i just couldn't find it on amazon though i'm sure it's somewhere what i did find on amazon that i did not find when i was putting this video project together was there's an entire kit that includes everything it includes the wi-fi adapter the cable which is already connected to the pci slot cover and the antenna it sells for about thirty dollars so it would have been cheaper had i seen it but i will save you the effort of finding it it's in the links below the video all together it's about twenty dollars for the card about five four five dollars for the cable thirteen dollars for the antenna the kit was a few dollars cheaper and i would like i said i could i could get a drill and just drill a couple of holes i don't like that but i could so that i could fit these fittings through there and secure it down but wait there's more gigabyte offers the whole kit as well so if you want to keep everything manufacturer specific although you don't have to a very common misunderstanding was if you bought a wi-fi card it had to be the same manufacturer of the router i don't really hear people having that misunderstanding as often as i used to the reason why we used to recommend getting everything from the same manufacturer was for support reasons so if i got a d-link network adapter and a linksys router who do you call when it doesn't work regardless of the decision you make they'll whoever you call will tell you it's the other one's fault so if you bought everything from the same manufacturer they're sort of obligated to help you solve the problem you're having and that's why we'd say you know get everything from the same manufacturer right because if you have to ask that question you're probably going to need help and if you don't buy all the same manufacturers parts then the other manufacturer it's always the other manufacturer's problem that's just generally the way it works so that being said if you just wanted to keep everything loyal to gigabyte and you can find one of these they're hard to find they call this the cnvi wi-fi upgrade kit and this contains everything i've just shown you or at least it's supposed to let's take a look now again there's a link that points to amazon though when i was shopping for this i don't think i found it on amazon i think i found it on ebay i was just happy to find it and inside they've already attached the antennas to the card which is nice so i don't have to struggle we've got our antenna and not only did they attach the end of the cable to the card but they've also attached the other end of the cable to a pci express slot cover for you so a lot of the work is already done here so if i take this out i'll show you this is the pci express slot that i was talking about we had to drill some holes to get those fittings in there this is already done for you and it's pretty neat they got a little a little protective cap which is unnecessary and i suppose you could just probably leave that on you you don't necessarily have to take this off i bet but you can just leave it on if you want to take it off i believe it just slides off now that's this card here is an ax 200 and this one well it probably says on the box i'll let you read the text on it because you guys can see it on your big screens and this camera's a good camera it should focus in and let you read all of that and so that would go as i mentioned into the slot just like an m.2 drive would so we could get our jis driver here and let's see if we can zoom you in you can watch what i'm doing bring the camera down this way we'll zoom in some more and i'm going to remove let's see let me stand over here we'll remove this screw we will install the card and then press the card down flush and put the screw back in to secure the card and then we can choose any one of these pci slots i will pick the bottom one since that's the one that's least common commonly used if the customer wants to add a graphics card i i could go right up to the top too but again if the customer wants to add a graphics card i would rather not crowd this area which would also partially uh block the well i guess it's not going to block the heatsink but what will happen is if i put this slot cover at the top and the antennas point up then the antennas are going to get in the way right if i put if i use this slot and this screwdriver represents the antennas the antennas are going to get in the way of all those ports so i would much rather when installing the pci express slot cover slot cover i would rather go down here at the bottom and then keep this area free and clear and that way when the antennas go up or off to the sides we can kind of open them like a like a v and keep them free of any interference from other cards you might have or we'll have in the future so if i take this existing slot cover out see this is the piece i couldn't find and in messing about with it i've accidentally pulled the one end off so that'll have to go back on here in a minute maybe why they left that plastic cover on there just so it doesn't do that i think that little plastic cover could have stayed in place although i've never seen i've never seen those little wi-fi adapters with a plastic cover before it is pretty cool and so what i'm going to do is i'm going to hold this pci express slack cover in place with my fingers here on the other side i'm going to hold on to it so that it'll stay in position while i secure it then all we have to do is add our antenna now once again i can use a third party antenna like the one i have here or obviously if you bought the whole kit you would have no necessary reason to do that you can use the antenna that comes with the kit which i have here in the box now this is still a dual antenna as you can see but it it comes out as both antennas are together side by side so if we open this up this is the same antenna when you buy a motherboard that has built-in wi-fi like uh well any motherboard that says wi-fi on it already has the wi-fi chip on the board and then they'll include this in the box and then these two screw i don't know what you call these the the area where you screw the antenna on will be up here on your io shield as part of the motherboard but when it's part of the motherboard how do you upgrade it what if it fails do you replace your whole motherboard or do you just disable it in the bios to me i would prefer to not have wi-fi built into a motherboard because the wi-fi standards are always improving and there's no way to improve it you're just sort of stuck with what you've got you can disable it and then add a card or a usb card or internal card um those that's entirely up to you i don't like when they wrap this like this it's very difficult to get it open let me figure out how i'm going to open this let's be very careful not to cut into the cables there we go put that there it doesn't matter which cable you screw on to which connector does not matter and then we can remove this wire tie and is this magnetic yes it's magnetic as long as that internal cable remains disconnected my signal strength is not going to be good it'll work but it won't work well until i hook that back up which is probably going to be a little bit of a challenge given that it's so dark in the case and i have a bit of limited access because the heatsink is is right there but let me pull the plastic off of this shouldn't be this difficult plastic doesn't hurt anything to keep it on there but it's really just to protect it from getting scratched up in shipping and i'm kind of a stickler when it comes to doing my installs i like all the plastic removed so everything is shiny clean what will happen over time is that plastic will it will not age well it'll start to yellow and bubble up and your whatever's covered in plastic like in this case the antenna it's gonna look really bad i've seen people do that with the remote controls on their tvs i'm like you know you have a brand new remote control underneath this piece of plastic this yellowing bubbled up ugly remote just beautiful and shiny and clean underneath this plastic that was supposed to be removed when you took it out of the box but what are you gonna do some people just don't care well they really put that on good i'm not going to struggle too much with it we'll just put it up here for now as for that little uh cable coming off see the more i do it the better i get so maybe i can do this one quicker so yeah that's a real challenge i'm not a big fan of grabbing any tools because again this is fairly easily crushed and it's something i want to feel for you know i can feel when that thing seats because there's a small pin in the center of it i don't want to refresh that pin or break that pin so that's hooked up that has wi-fi now and windows 10 for many of these will auto load the driver now how good are the wi-fi speeds and distance range etc just really depends on like i said the distance from your router and what router you have then of course which wi-fi router uh which wi-fi adapter you bought but you still have more options i've only shown you three internal for chipsets that support the internal ng ff or next generation form factor wi-fi card which is again really designed for portable devices like laptops and tablets you can add a pci express card which would also be very very easy in comparison to what we just did price wise they're all about the same you could plug a usb adapter in which is even easier a hundred dollar usb networking adapter is about as good as a 100 pci express internal networking adapter and your selection of which ones you can choose from are far greater than your selection of these little ones but again all the links for these are in the video notes below the video and as i mentioned i'm still not done with my options because there's more you see there is power line networking and the way power line networking works is it enables you to use your home's pre-existing wiring to go from one room to another and the way it works i don't have one to show you but it's a wall adapter with an ethernet jack on it and you would plug the wall adapter directly into the wall not through a surge protector but directly into the wall and then run a patch cable from it to the back of your router now these wall adapters are sold in pairs you go to the room in the same house that you want to have your wi-fi but instead of wi-fi you can take this other powerline networking adapter plug it into directly into the wall and then run an ethernet cable from that to the back of the computer now that's now not going to be as fast as wi-fi but it is certainly more secure i will say the it could be faster than old wi-fi but it won't be faster than new wi-fi but you know in comparison and yet there's still more options if you had a big house and you didn't want to add a wi-fi adapter to your computer and you had a mesh router you could put one of the mesh mesh routers are usually two or three units sometimes more four or five depending on you know how big you want to go but like with the tp-link or the eros systems that i've reviewed here they have three units so if you put one of the units near the computer all of those units have ethernet jacks in the back of them so while they communicate with each other wirelessly you can run an ethernet cable from the back of one unit to the computer that's beside it negating the need for a wi-fi adapter so there are a number of different ways to add wi-fi depending on your budget your needs um did i miss any does anybody have any other ways you can add wi-fi i'd be kind of curious different price points different amounts of effort to install the beauty about running a cable is the security and the consistency of the connection when you're plugging a cable into the power line you're still going to have a consistency this is going to be not as good as a cable straight to the back of the router anytime you can get straight to the back of the router that's preferred when i purchased this house one of the first things i did was had an electrician this house has no attic every room in this house is vaulted so that means there's about that much gap between where the top of the house is and where the ceiling is so i don't have the skills to get in there with a what they call a fish to fish the wire through that gap the gentleman who did it is a professional electrician the same person i had working on studio b and he had to cut a hole in my closet of my office to run and fish that cable down so that it comes out down the wall over here and i keep the router in the center of the house the router broadcasts 360 degrees up down left right so if i put the router on one side of the house then my signal is going to be weaker on one side of the house and my neighbors well they're going to get a pretty good signal if they can get into my router they can hack at it all day i'd never know so the best location for your wi-fi router is the center of the house but if you've got a giant house you know if you're looking at 5 000 square feet even 4 000 square feet and above then you want a mesh wi-fi router or you want the whole house wired with ethernet cables so you never have to run wi-fi except on things like phones and tablets where running a cable is not an option but generally your data consumption on those is nowhere near what it could be for example um there are things that i create for the pc like these videos if i'm editing a video these are gigabytes in size and to transfer that to my nas over wi-fi is going to take a while if i have a wired connection it takes seconds these huge files transfer in seconds over to my network attached storage so moving files back and forth is which is what i do is i'm nerdy i really need that wired connection my tvs or my fire sticks those can be wi-fi it's fine for netflix it's fine for tv streaming generally speaking unless you have a lot of people in the house with a lot of tvs and they're all trying to watch stuff at the same time then you might need a multi-stream router so you may see a six stream stream that is going to tell you how many simultaneous wi-fi connections it can deal with and then of course there's always a maximum to how many people can connect anyway the older routers had a maximum of like 10 people like the 80211b stuff and now i'm not sure what the maximum is but even then if you've got one person fogging up the bandwidth it can interfere with the response times and the delays for other people and so the newer routers allow you to configure that and to enable a load balancing so if you have a heavy usage household then everybody gets an equal slice of it not taking turns you wouldn't know you were taking turns other than you're waiting in other words there's no indication of uh of when your turn is coming up this is all happening in milliseconds as the router is serving numerous requests one by one by one by one by one and it's doing it very very quickly but the more often those requests come in and the bigger those requests are the more it has to keep going around and eventually you'll start to feel it you'll say geez you know my internet gets really slow when when the kids are here so you can control that with getting a more expensive router with multi-streams and also configuring it to only allow a certain amount of bandwidth per stream so as to avoid one person causing everybody else grief so everything is is a level of money wi-fi is simply not just wi-fi it's not all the same and those different price points exist for different feature sets that matter to some people and don't matter to others quite frankly and i just wanted to make a video to explain all of these options because what often happens when someone says well how do i add wi-fi to my computer someone will go we'll just buy a usb adapter as though that's their only choice as i mentioned usb adapters have their downfall as well but they are very very easy you plug it in just like a flash drive you may or may not be required to provide a driver the the decent ones you know the higher end name brand ones generally work without you providing a driver that windows 10 will see it automatically load the driver you're good to go there are some less expensive ones that will do that but i don't know what they are like you'd have to buy them and see well will this well this unit here auto detect i don't know it might i'd have to plug it in and see read the reviews on uh the website like amazon newegg wherever you're buying read the reviews people will often tell you if they uh needed a driver for whatever you know there'll be people using linux people using mac people using windows and and they'll often share their experience especially if it wasn't a good one or if it was really easier than they thought it was going to be and let that help guide you also you can spend more money with a name brand that doesn't always guarantee that the driver is going to be there but it's more likely built in to windows and just read those reviews but there is no best all right so when somebody says well what's the best one is this one best or is that one best or is this one best or is the power line best or is the mesh best it's what's best for you what's meeting your needs what's meeting your budget and the only way that you can know what's best for you is to have somebody explain it here's what all of your options are now that you know what your options are choose accordingly any questions eric makes a good point he says the cost of setting up a residence or a business with a wired network will be a one-time cost wi-fi always has to be upgraded at some point whether it's for security or performance or range that is an excellent point stuart wants to know can you use more than one of these wi-fi options at the same time well i've never really known anybody who needed to connect to two networks at the same time like that that's i understand there are motherboards sold with two ethernet connections and i've never quite understood why people would do that i imagine you can because you will have just as you would have multiple ethernet adapters you should can certainly have multiple wi-fi adapters but i will tell you you better be very careful with the channels you're using you know maybe use only 2.4 gigahertz on one and 5 gigahertz on the other or be on channel 1 on the two point four on the channel 11 because now you're not only competing with your neighbors but you're competing with yourself so i'm sure it's possible i've never done it but i don't see any logical reason why you couldn't i just don't know why you would do any of these wi-fi cards come with bluetooth yes in general these little tiny cards like this one often have bluetooth because again they re they replace wifi and bluetooth on portable devices laptops and tablets that's what they were engineered for this wifi adapter here is just wi-fi this one is also just wi-fi you would have to read the description of the adapter some of them do come with bluetooth they are more money and then of course there's different versions of bluetooth i think what's the latest five bluetooth five so if you see an adapter that's really cheap with bluetooth it may be an older generation of bluetooth i'm not aware of any of the wi-fi networking adapters that have bluetooth but you can buy i'm sorry the the usb wi-fi adapters not sure if i said that i've never seen one that included bluetooth but you can buy a separate usb bluetooth adapter as well and of course you can use those at the same time these are great questions please keep the questions coming kevin says any server will have multiple ethernet ports yes but the server wouldn't be distributing via wi-fi so i'm not quite sure bluetooth 6 is the latest thank you eric i don't use bluetooth at all um on my phone i would never use bluetooth on a desktop computer it doesn't make any sense because you have to go through the effort of pairing like if you had a bluetooth keyboard and mouse you have to pair them but with a wi-fi keyboard i'm sorry but with a wireless keyboard and mouse they're automatically configured to a dongle so i can get into the bios and do what i need to do may not be able to do that with bluetooth bluetooth for a keyboard and mouse would be required for like a tablet or smartphone because that's the only way you could connect a keyboard or mouse to them and maybe even a tv but i know in many tvs the regular wireless keyboards work as well so uh if your bluetooth is really about being portable it's about moving from place to place to place so on a desktop computer that sits in one place bluetooth doesn't make any sense to me it will work but it seems like you're paying more for the bluetooth than just a regular wireless keyboard and mouse and then you have the issue of pairing it kerry have you tried any of the 3g or 4g m.2 cards no i have not is there a possibility for delay and response time using wi-fi for online gaming yes your latency will be a little higher that's pretty typical but it also depends on the strength so latency depends on your internet service provider the game server you're connecting to your distance from it and how strong your wi-fi connection is how strong your signal is in most cases there'll be a bit of a more latency and a wi-fi connection than on a wired connection but there's a lot of variables at play there daniel says he's got a bluetooth usb but he uses it for outside speakers well sure i'm not saying there's never a reason to plug bluetooth into a desktop but as far as the keyboard and mouse goes it doesn't make any sense and as far as speakers go you just run a cable you know how far the speakers from the computer in your case if you've got speakers outside i could understand you're not taking the desktop computer outside that that makes sense though when i want to play music through my speakers outside i use my smartphone's bluetooth not my desktop computer because when i'm outside and i want to play the next track i'm not going to go in the house get on the computer bring up swap spotify and or whatever application and hit the next button i can just have my phone and standing right next to the speaker i can adjust the volume with the phone volume connected to bluetooth the volume button on the phone controls the volume of the speaker and i can control the song selection or pause it or if my phone rings the bluetooth shuts off automatically if my phone were to ring while i was bluetoothing from my desktop i would have to manually shut off the speaker or turn the volume down on the speaker marco says it's great for headphones um again on a phone i agree on a desktop i i don't agree the headphones with bluetooth always have an audio delay that results in a synchronization issue so if i'm watching a video on my computer like this video with bluetooth headphones the audio will be slightly out of sync with the movement of my lips because of the inherent delay in bluetooth now on a phone i don't notice it in a phone conversation but um i haven't tried a headset with bluetooth 6. maybe that's resolved when i use bluetooth headphones on my television to watch tv at night i have to set a sound delay of 600 milliseconds to synchronize it it's off by 600 milliseconds it's pretty significant ron says my sadena keyboard and mouse work great with dongle sure of course they work great you just had to go through extra steps if they're bluetooth that's all which is required again on a tablet or a smartphone it's not a requirement on a desktop but you can do it you certainly can do it ron says i get faster speeds using five gigahertz versus versus using 2.4 well that's true if you're fairly close to the source of the signal 2.4 has greater range and modern routers will give you both at the same time it'll give you 2.4 and 5 and balance the load between them based on distance and interruptions interference i mean um and other people 2.4 is more common so more people tend to jump on it so if you're in a household or a business with other people and you're able to connect with a device that supports the simultaneous two point four and five gigahertz connections and the router provides that they'll work that out to always give you the best signal but the minute you move a distance from the source from the router you'll find that five gigahertz signal range is pretty limited compared to the 2.4 jeff jankowitz says i see my next build right behind you what are you looking at behind me the uh the fantex or the red what's that is that thread ripper yeah that's the red ripper back there is defragmenting a solid-state drive as bad as google tells me should i never do it no you you should never defragment a solid-state drive you're not going to kill it but if you make a habit out of it you will prematurely cause the drive to have excessive rights and the solid state drive can only have so many writes on it before it becomes read only and it won't allow you to write to it anymore and my question to you is why do you want to defragment the solid-state drive so let me ask you that do you think you will get any benefit from it because you're wrong mechanical drives store data wherever space is on the platter and so that mechanical head has to move back and forth across the platters to put the data back together again a solid state drive it's all on computer chips so if the data is scattered across the number of computer chips the amount of time it takes to grab the data because there's no physical moving parts is the same whether the data is contiguous or defragmented therefore it has no benefit so all you're doing is wearing down how many rights that solid state drive has left in it for no benefit so it's best to avoid it but if you do it from time to time i doubt you're going to notice any difference and the solid state drives now are good for like 60 years 70 years under normal usage so even if you cut that life in half even if you cut that life by 75 you will likely have that drive replaced anyway and there's other reasons why a drive might fail although not allowing you to write to it isn't exactly a failure it's just a it'll become read only you know it would be right protected essentially that's not a failure but again there's no benefit to it and there's lots of other reasons why you would need to replace the solid state drive long before that rochester ny87s contributed twenty dollars he says hey carrie i hope all is well i'm all out of tech shows to listen to well i'm working you gotta get back to work see you we're live just wanted to drop in with a small contribution thank you david i appreciate that and uh you and i will have to talk about your computer build caleb wants to know if you take a part a pc motherboard will you ruin the warranty that you got or will it be perfectly fine on do you need to tell this store or company you bought it from you um if you bought like a dell or an hp and you want to open it up to add or remove a card or memory or storage that's fine if you remove the motherboard and solder anything or cause damage to it scratch it up then that's not a warranty issue warranty is about defects in workmanship or materials but it is your computer and it is intended for you to be able to upgrade it to change the ram to add more storage to put a video card in to put a wi-fi card in it's like asking me if i open up the hood of my car and change my oil will it void the warranty on the car no but if you were to say make a major change to the engineering of the car change the intake manifold change the radiator then you probably will avoid the warranty since the manufacturer cannot stand behind you the quality of the work that you just modified to their equipment but if you wanted to put seat covers on change your air filter do maintenance change the tires so all within reason marco says i'm using a bluetooth headphone right now and he says the delay is probably 100 milliseconds virtually in sync yeah mine isn't i'll tell you that william says some manufacturers put stickers on the back of laptop screw holes or desktops that if you break that seal the warranty is void that's not legal in the united states congress passed the law some time ago a couple years ago that if a manufacturer puts a seal that says warranty void if broken on a computer um like on a desktop or a laptop that's not legal they cannot enforce it chewin wants to know is a solid state drive for the operating system and a hard disk drive for storing other data an ideal combination for a home user mechanical hard drives all fail i don't recommend mechanical hard drives ever however if you have extraordinary storage needs solid state drives are only sold up to about eight terabytes and they're quite expensive about fifteen hundred dollars for an eight terabyte solid-state drive these prices will come down i think back in the day when solid state's drives were relatively small and expensive then that would have like if you asked me that question 10 years ago i would agree with you in fact if you'd asked me that question seven years ago six years ago i would have agreed with you but today buy a two terabyte solid state drive if you need more than two terabytes you'll have to go to mechanical storage but you know that's a lot to lose so how are you backing that up you know unless it's stuff you don't care about like if you're a gamer some of these games are huge huge and it'll quickly consume your two terabytes of storage so if you're a gamer and you've got all this downloadable content and these games are you know the equivalent of i think the new microsoft flight simulator they're offering it on dvd and i can't remember is it 23 dvds or something it's crazy so it a lot of these games consume a lot of storage and in that instance i would say yeah a mechanical drive or or get a two terabyte solid-state drive you can put a couple of games on it shouldn't be a problem and then clear those games off to make room for others just re-download it when you need it mechanical drives are best to be avoided unless they're absolutely necessary for storage capacity in my opinion because it will fail on you caleb also wants to know where's the best place to get a new motherboard wherever you want any place that sells motherboards that you trust that you you know know that has good customer service if you have a problem whether that's a local retailer or an online retailer that decision is for you to make if you buy from some shady seller you've never heard of from a site you've never heard of and you never get the product or there's an issue with it you could be buying gray market or stolen product obviously that's not going to happen at a reputable retailer so i would just say any reputable retailer in your area or online that's reputable i buy my stuff from primarily three sources amazon newegg and b h photo those are my three main go-to's there's no micro center store anywhere in phoenix but there are people that will go to their local micro center store as a reputable electronics retailer computer parts retailer with good customer service so i'm told brad says what is your nas configuration i have a synology 218 with two 12 terabyte seagate iron wolf drives in a raid 1 configuration there's a video about it here on the channel danny says i've heard that hard drives last longer than solid-state drives if you refresh the data every few years it's absolutely not true anything that has a moving part in a motor is going to fail that motor will fail there are bearings and grease mechanical functioning simply fails solid-state drives are just a circuit board there's no moving parts so if you want to put your data on a hard drive and put your data on a solid state drive and then come back in 10 or 15 years and let me know which one fails first it the mechanical drive is likely going to be the first one to fail and if those drives are powered on 24 7 the mechanical drive will probably fail and the solid state drive will probably outlive you probably i mean i read on the internet i'm 10 feet tall so i guess it's true i read it on the on the internet brad says i have a ds216 plus two with two four terabyte western digital reds yeah i i really like the synology nas's this is fantastic what are the various advantages of 300 400 or 500 series chipsets depends if you're talking about amd or intel but primarily it resolves a revolves around how many usb ports you get how many pci express lanes to the processor you know if you want to run dual m.2 drives at full speed the lower chipsets will run perhaps one at one at one speed and the other one at half the speed um this is far too complex for me to answer and you wouldn't remember any of it anyway but you can go to websites like tom's hardware or even wikipedia i'm sure will break down the differences in the chipsets for you so you can decide accordingly which one is best for you you know if you want to do overclocking versus if you have no interest in that then you're going to pick your chipset accordingly how much ram or how many ram sockets how many sata ports how many usb ports how many usb 3s three point ones all of that's based on the chipset limitations obviously the less the chipset can do the cheaper it is the cheaper the board is you get what you pay for so the cheaper the board is overall it's not going to do as much but if you're not somebody who does as much then why would you buy more than you could use anyway unless you have plans to grow into it frank peter says g'day i have a five-year-old toshiba satellite laptop shortly i will install a new solid-state drive and operating system it will need download driver no well if you put windows 10 on it you shouldn't need any drivers downloaded windows 10 will just take care of it tim teal says your channel has helped me a lot in the last six months i'm glad i found your channel hey tim thank you for the kind words i appreciate that let's turn tim blue tim is blue caleb wants to know what part of the motherboard usually causes the entire system to stop working but you can still hear the fan and motherboard running that is usually caused by bad ram or a bad processor sometimes a bad cpu other times something plugged into the board either usb keyboard mouse flash drive anything plugged into the motherboard physically can cause that but more times than not in my experience it is either bad ram or a bad cpu and then sometimes a bad motherboard so quite literally every single component in your computer apart from the case itself causes or could be the cause for that particular symptom but if you brought it to me the first thing i would check is your ramp and i have a video that explains how to do that you just type carrie holzman ram and that video will come up here on youtube says thanks kerry love your videos it's 4 am here in india thanks for watching it's great seeing viewers from all over the world joining in this uh wonderful community we've got people from all over the world all like-minded sharing our passion for technology and and uh and being nice to each other it's very very unusual here on the internet to have such a a wonderful community so big too love to see it bigger we've got 1470 people watching around the world right now so if you want to give me a shout out and tell me when uh i'm sorry where you're watching from it's always enjoyable to uh see where people are watching from ron wants to know what my thoughts are on netgear network hardware i think netgear makes a great networking gear i use when i when i'm buying a networking switch i will often buy netgear or tp-link my router is a netgear xr700 that's that 500 router i'm very happy with it i'm a little concerned it hasn't had a firmware update since october i don't like feeling abandoned by the manufacturer but when i'm shopping for networking hardware i look at netgear i look at tp-link when i'm looking for value if i'm looking for a cable modem i'll look at eris or motorola i did not like my netgear cable modem at all but when it comes to network switches and routers i think netgear leads the way i avoid d-link at all costs d-link's just got all kinds i've had a history of security problems and i just don't recommend their products i if somebody wants to buy d-link that's fine just don't ask me to help you with it um but but my two main networking companies that i go to are netgear link and then asus has some good networking gear too so there's there's three major ones that i use that's not to say others are bad but those those are the three that i use chris king has contributed ten dollars he says i haven't been at all vocal in chat today modern medical technology imagine how your life would have been different 80 years ago if you were born 80 years earlier the fact that we can have open heart surgery and extend our lives is amazing and i know that that's a that's a pretty severe in most cases depending on how you had it done it could be a pretty severe recovery but hopefully i can keep you distracted and and encourage you to take it easy and let everything heal before you get back to running any marathons you're tuned in to chn the carrie holzman network i like it buchanan is in the southwest part of michigan kalamazoo is about an hour away only about 5 000 people live in the city wow about 255 000 people live in glendale arizona it's like the 88th largest city in the united states i know that doesn't seem like a big you know but there's a lot of cities like michigan alone has like what i don't know hundreds if not a thousand cities just in michigan we have 50 states the states each have i don't know how many cities well over 100 each so you know to be in that top 100 is a pretty significant population what i wouldn't give to be in a smaller village than in the big rat race of a quarter million people just in my city that's not phoenix that's nothing phoenix has a bigger problem this is just glendale that's how crowded and jammed up it is here imagine that with 110 degree fahrenheit weather sounds like heaven doesn't it i do want to warn you there there there are people online there's no shortage of them that will tell you about failure rates they'll tell you that mechanical drives will last longer than solid state drives and and all i can suggest you is to say that those people prove it i run a business and i see hundreds of computers for numerous reasons every year and i've been doing a professional computer repair for 29 years so some guy with one computer or he's had two or three computers in the span of whatever amount of time that's less than a week's worth of work for me and if they're establishing this anecdotal evidence as proof because of their own personal experience it's just there's not enough data there to actually correlate any meaningful result but in all the years i've been doing this i've never had a solid state drive fail i've never had a customer bring a machine to me with a failed solid state drive and no solid-state drive i've ever installed has ever failed that's not to say they don't fail i just haven't seen one yet you might have seen one you might have seen ten but that's not my experience and i'm seeing uh well i don't know how many computers i'll see this year but it's got to be it's got to be at least between 70 and 100 and that's me slowing down back in the day when we were dealing you know in the early 90s mechanical hard drive failure was crazy it was constant just another day another bad hard drive another day another bad hard drive these newer hard drives are in my experience far more reliable but i'm seeing less and less of them like the two 12 terabyte seagate iron wolf drives that are in my nas perfect no issues i've been in there what two three years i think no issues now my previous nas i had four seagate um they were the three gigabyte drives and that was in a seagate nas which was horrible and those three gigabyte drives got an enormous failure rate and i think there's even a wikipedia on uh article on that whole big big issue um so they seem to have improved however just this week i made a video with a failed hard drive last week i made a i did a repair of a failed drive that i was recovering data from but in all fairness the drive was made in 2005. i'm sort of tempted to put some data on a solid state drive here on a live video and put a date label on it and go stick it on a shelf and then come back and revisit that and put these rumors to bed because people will say well it's not good for archival use you can't do this there's no proof there's actually no proof they just read something they decided to believe it and then worse they then parroted the information back out as though it was fact it's simply not true it's simply not true and i don't know any other way to do it but then to and then here's the question so let's say i take a solid state drive i put a bunch of data on it like okay guys we're going to revisit this video in x amount of years three years five years no matter how many years i pick somebody will go well yeah if you had waited another year it wouldn't have been there okay so then i got to take what four or five solid state drives and we'll check one in three years we'll check one in five years we'll check one in seven years we'll take one in ten years what's it gonna take and 10 years from now you probably won't care anymore because we'll be using some other form of technology it's a pointless argument because any data that's important to you you should be backing up and failure rates um are irrelevant honestly for the end user as long as you backed up your data who cares because statistics only apply to people that affect them like you might say airline travel is the safest way to travel but that's a little counseled somebody who has lost a loved one in an airline accident although it doesn't represent the majority it's not going to make them feel any better well i'm sorry your loved one died in that airplane crash but you know that's the safest way to travel thanks i feel better now like it doesn't really matter what the statistics are it matters what affects you so no matter how good a product is they all fail at some point nothing is forever everything fails this earth is only going to be here for a certain amount of time our sun is only going to burn for if everything's temporary so while you're here instead of worrying about reliability of your storage back your stuff up and if you're so worried that you that you do you truly believe that a hard drive is more reliable than a solid state then buy your hard drive i don't care i honestly don't care but i can tell you as a business person who runs a business successfully for what's it been 15 years you've been self-employed i have never seen a failed solid state drive come to my office ever never ever ever i saw uh brian cometa over at 300 data recovery doing a recovery on a brand new solid state drive like a model that was just released that year clearly that was unusual but nothing's ever been brought to me i have no reason to lie there's nothing in it for me like if i tell you i haven't seen a solid state drive it's not because i'm making money nobody's paying me to say that it's just sharing my experience if i see one i'll share it with you because i'll be kind of excited i've never seen one but if i see mechanical drives fail more than i can count and two mechanical drives fail were brought to me from customers in the last two weeks so take that data and do with it whatever you want but it's no excuse to not back up it's not like well i'll get a solid state drive because kerry says how reliable they are and i don't have to worry about backing up oh no you still have to back up besides which there's other ways you can lose your data you can accidentally delete it you can get ransomware virus you can be robbed burglarized you can have a fire you can have a flood all kinds of things can happen besides hard drive failure that can cause the loss of your data or storage failure and that is why you back up important stuff so so it doesn't really matter if you agree or disagree my experience is what i'm sharing with you i'm not telling you um you know i'm i'm not a psychic i can't see into the future i can't tell you how long a mechanical drive can store data before the magnetism that stores the data weakens over time and then the data vanishes or the same holds true with a solid-state drive nothing lasts forever which one lasts longer i have no idea but i don't know anybody who does that i've never met a person in my life that puts data on a drive and then locks it away for years and years and years because at that point how do you even know you've got it it's the most bizarre argument i've ever heard in my life i've never had a customer approach me and say how can i archive this data one time and never look at it again for 10 years i'll say delete it what do i do in 10 years i go i'll visit your grave in 10 years you won't care anymore so i it's just the logic people use to justify their agenda is just bizarre to me i don't understand why you would be so motivated to try and and argue a point like it doesn't matter you want to buy you want to believe what you want to believe go ahead i don't care it doesn't cost me any money i don't profit and if i ever see a failed solid state drive brought to me by a customer i'll show it to you and if any customer ever brings me a flash drive or a solid state drive that they said oh i put data on this and i put it in a in a closet for the last x amount of years and now when i plug it in the data is gone i will share that information with you if that ever happens you know if you walk outside a meteor could fall out of the sky and crush you okay do you know anybody that's happened to here's something for those of you who think that way think about this what if there were no hypothetical situations that'll keep you busy for a while ed says the early ocz solid state drives were notoriously unreliable ed how many bad occ drives did you personally experience you the reason i ask is i have a few ocz drives here from back in the day they all work so how come mine work and i suspect uh you were reading something online i suspect you never had any i mean you could tell me you did it's not like i'm going to know you're telling the truth just just to sort of make it seem like you're proving a point but i'm going to show you right here oh wow this is old [Laughter] talk is cheap show me proof i'm going to show you proof right now this is an old well it's got somebody's name on it this is an old ocz drive we can all agree yes it's even in the three and a half inch form factor like a regular traditional mechanical drive so you don't have to put any adapters on it three and a half inch 120 gig sata2 if this didn't work why would i have it why would this not be in the recycle bin if this didn't work i can plug this in to this computer right here this has not been on in years years this has not been on now before i plug it in who wants to make a bet with me as to whether or not it works who's willing to truly believe this nonsense because i have proof and i have not turned that drive on it has not been powered on it's got to be four years at least four years so let's just let's do this stop talking and let's do something who's willing to bet me that that drive no longer works brad says i'll roll on the floor laugh and if it doesn't boot what do i care if it doesn't boot it'll be the first failed solid state drive i've ever seen in my life in person so i'm happy with those odds i'm okay with it i'm willing to risk it that's how confident i am niles vandesant has contributed to euro he says because mesh routers are often a privacy sellout i think people overestimate the value of their privacy if you're a celebrity or a public figure it's one thing but if you're just a another face in a crowd nobody cares nobody cares what website you went to jamie m has contributed five pounds says i have an old ocz drive fail three days after i got it bought it used from ebay consider the source jamie again i hear stories i hear all these stories that doesn't change my experience does it i that's your experience that's not my experience and i bet you i've seen a lot more solid-state drives you know since they came out than you have like if either one of us was more likely to get a bad solid state drive the sheer volume that i deal with i've never seen one fail arvid is contributed 15 norwegian phoner he says it works 100 oh wow okay andrew says i can't bet i still only have hard drive that says plug it in oh i'm gonna wait isn't that interesting when people are actually challenged for proof how quiet the room got can i be so confident because i've never seen a failed solid state drive i have absolutely no reason to believe there's any reason because this has been sitting on my desk you know it's covered in dust i bet the data's still on here it says it's jinger's old hard drive or old ssd this was probably one of the very first solid state drives i've ever used does it have a manufacturing date on it when you see us we talk about the warranty there are indicators for determining warranty status and these stickers may have information on them like the serial number that if you were to remove those stickers your warranty would be invalid because the company would have no way to validate that it's their product it's genuine authentic and they would have any record of what the serial number is therefore if you are opening up um a device that requires you to tear one of the stickers that's used to identify warranty status that would that could jeopardize your warranty just getting back to that whole earlier thing runs ron says hey i was quiet long before that i just want to know i just want to know who's who's willing to bet me if you're so confident that these occ drives in particular are notoriously bad and that solid state drives don't last as long as hard drives where did those people go who were saying that where did you go now this probably has windows 7 on it it probably isn't going to boot but what i can do is i can hook it up to where the optical drive is on this machine as a slave drive and i should be able to see drive d once windows 10 loads it should load as drive d and i should be able to explore all the files on it now it is true that ocz uh did have a string of failed drives but then so did seagate with the three gigabyte drives i just mechanical drives so did western digital anybody remember the ibm death star so these mechanical drives have a much bigger history of failure of course they've been around a lot longer and there's more hard drives out there so percentage-wise if you had five percent of failed mechanical drives and five percent of failed solid-state drives i would see more hard drives because there's more out there right even if the percentages were the same you know five percent of a hundred is a smaller number than five percent of a hundred thousand but i'm just simply telling you i've never seen a failed solid-state drive um brought to me for repair in no solid-state drive that i've ever installed no matter how old has ever failed i'm basically trying to shove truth down your throat i'm basically trying to get you to accept that i have no motivation to make this information up there's no financial advantage or incentive there's nothing in it for me but it's almost like trying to tell somebody it's cold outside you're like no it isn't like how can you tell me it's not cold how can you tell me what i experienced go outside oh i can't be bothered well then don't tell me it's not go don't tell me i didn't experience something that's really offensive then you're saying i'm a liar you know that's why it's offensive i have there's no motivation or justification or incentive for me to lie about it so i go to this extreme right i'm like all right let's just plug this in luis lopez has it right on the head exactly moving parts are always going to fail before solid state points niall says i missed his contribution did i let's take a look i apologize for that oh i missed a few here let's see what we got going on um joe dunderdale's contributed five canadian dollars he says hello from a small alberta canada prairie town called strathmore oh that's the one i read earlier thank you joe mario l with a 20 contribution he says check your paypal after the show and thank you well thank you marty daniel pexton with a five dollar contribution he says thank you for the info about the upgrade for my sister niles van der sand contributed to he says what are your thoughts about two routers over mesh i find they don't work as well as a mesh router personally mesh routers like the eros or tp-link even netgear has their line of mesh routers to me work better than traditional routers that have a mesh mode that's been my experience like they were designed right out of the gate to be mesh versus like asus added the the mesh option to a firmware update on some of their routers and it works it just doesn't work from my experience it doesn't work anywhere near as well it's not as easy to configure the range isn't as good but at the end of the day it's still a mesh router or routers as the case may be and when people have large areas big homes four thousand five thousand six thousand square feet you pretty much have to go mesh there's really no option if you want a seamless trade-off as you walk from room to room and around that house you don't want to have to constantly keep switching networks it'll just hand it off automatically and it's seamless and it just works they're really really good ranging distance on mesh routers or you have to see it to believe it they're incredible but if you're in a small house if you're in you know 2 000 square feet or less you probably won't notice any difference between a regular standard router and a mesh router be a bit overkill for you my friend ron is in the chat he says my ocz agility 3 solid-state drive is 9 years old and it works fine william lin says the on my google wi-fi router google says i can connect up to 200 devices and i have no buffering on the google wi-fi it's very fast and very smooth and it uses google cloud but it's very secure i'm glad you're happy with that rick says kerry got all fired up because somebody said ssds fail everything fails everything fails solid state drives will fail i promise you they will the question is are they not smart for archival use are they more reliable or less reliable than hard drives and i think that's ultimately what the question lies lance riplinger says he's got an early intel 80 gigabyte solid-state drive it works just fine it's very interesting to me that the people who have failures are typically louder and a lot of people will grab experiences from others and assume them as their own in other words they'll see a video online as though they lived it personally and then start spreading that information as though they're they're actually speaking with conviction because they saw a video or they read an article on a website even from a reputable website doesn't make it the de facto one size fits all this applies to everybody's standard people have different experiences and if anybody was going to experience a bad solid-state drive you would think it would be a technician who works on computers full time week after week month after month year after year i should have a pretty good sample size wouldn't you think compared to say a hobbyist or an enthusiast that tinkers around with their computer and their friends computers jamie m says i he contributes five pounds he says i had an old ocz drive fail three days after i got it again there's countless stories of people's experiences countless it doesn't replace my experience he says he bought it was from a used laptop on ebay wouldn't let me wouldn't let the laptop passed the post screen until the solid state drive was removed and ocz did an advanced rma they had great customer service up until eight months later they emailed me out of the blue asking for postage proof of the old solid stage right that's odd ocz is now owned by toshiba newcomer 8771 has contributed five pounds he says hey carrie thanks for the great content hoping all is well thanks newcomer appreciate that thanks for and jamie thanks for your contributions arvid thank you niles marty thanks you guys so am i going to plug this in or what what do you think who thinks this is not going to work who thinks i'm about to be really embarrassed am i about to eat crow would you have the guts to do it live in front of 300 people around the world you'd have to be pretty confident to put up that risk because i have nothing to nothing in this for me if it works exactly like it said it did no benefit if it fails it makes me look like fool so why in the world would i do it i do it because i've never seen a failed solid-state drive if this has failed i'd love to see it then i can stop saying that here's what's here's what we'll do we're going to fire this computer up i think this is thomas's computer i think this one goes out to thomas and he was just waiting on the wi-fi so it's probably out of date with regards to windows updates but that shouldn't matter should be a clean install of windows 10 on here let's get some power let me move my drinks because i got to move the power cable over there let's get that out of the way let's get this out of the way first let's make sure the machine boots and it works so we know we're working with a good machine keyboard and mouse are already plugged in and turned on let's fire this bad boy up and let's switch over to camera input 2 which is the uh the output of this computer camera 2. yep so we're booted up now and it should automatically identify the wi-fi adapter yeah and then the wi-fi networks oh i'm using the wrong mouse i gotta go through this one yep wi-fi is working i've not connected it to the wi-fi but i can see the ssids of the wi-fi networks around me so i know that that card works and we know this is a working new computer you can see this is a modern computer it's a core i7 9700k it's got 32 gigs of ram and we're running an m.2 drive which is right here it's an a data sx 8100 m.2 there's no other storage in this computer other than the optical drive so let's shut it down this thing is whisper quiet rocket ship fast we've got an evga 550 watt power supply you'll see how fast that shutdown is pretty quick let's go back to camera one so you can watch what i'm doing drive hasn't moved it's still right here same drive i'm going to unplug the sata data cable and the sata power cable from the back of the optical drive i don't know if i have enough slack that i can get this to fit onto this let's try it let's go now this drive i was wondering what the manufacturing data on this is it should have a date on here vertex 2 so it tells me see if we can do a quick search on what year this came out in general there's probably like a review of um let's see ocz vertex ii 3.5 inch drive and i'll put the word review because that should get us in the ballpark of 2010 so this drive is 10 years old 10 years old because i see a review from july 8 2010 today is july 23rd 2020. okay are we going to debate that i don't know i'm not sure anymore i'll give it data i'm sorry give it power well i did the cable management tight on this one and then we'll give it data plug that in now the data's been on that drive i think that's been sitting on my desk four or five years when i did this upgrade in fact that person's had two solid state drive updates uh they went to a three and a half inch samsung and then they went to an m.2 envy me since this drive that's why i try to explain to you that the failure of a solid state drive is not likely for you to experience you will probably replace the drive because drives are now much much faster and much much larger in capacity for less than the price that this cost back in what was probably twenty ten twenty eleven essential working too hard has contributed five dollars he says go for it it will certainly work i have no doubt it's gonna work but i do like kind of stringing along the tension because you know there's people that are like oh it's not gonna work well we're about to find out let's turn the machine back on let's switch back over to camera input two camera two there we go man that boots fast full screen let's go to the yellow folder i gotta use i keep grabbing the wrong mouse all right let's go to yellow folder this pc i should have a d drive there's 111 gigs properties is this ocz let's see hardware ocz vertex 2 3.5 are the files still on it yep i guess i can't do that there it all is folks let's run a crystal disc mark on it i'm kind of interested in what the performance util the performance difference is between that a data drive let's grab crystal disk whoops crystal disk mark portable let's do the sequential read and writes on the a data drive first for a point of comparison and then while that's running i can i can put myself up in the corner here let me grab this video it's nice it's not letting me do it camera one go right up there can we run crystal disk info sure we'll run that next so that's done let's switch over to the d drive now select drive d my screen is way too small i can't see anything there it is what the heck is driving oh that's the flash drive okay and then let's do the same test again so now we're doing a massive read and write on this 10 year old ocz drive there we go it's doing the read well it's preparing the read a few one of five is happening and we should see some numbers here we go 226.3 so the maximum set of two would carry is 300 and then there's some overhead for parity so maybe two [Music] 260 250 260 would maybe even 280 would be the maximum set of two could carry across the bus but remember hard drives were running at like 80. so this was still three times faster than a mechanical drive 10 years ago now we'll see what the rights look like on here oh painful yeah those rights are pretty painful in this case a mechanical drive would have been faster on the rights we're going up a little bit and it's test four to five here's the final five of five fifty is pretty painful but that's i mean i don't know what the original specs said you can go back and look at the reviews on the drive but that clearly works let's take a look at crystal disk info let's do that we can see how many hours are on this drive so the adata drive has only been powered on 10 times and it's had a total of two hours of use on it we'll go over here to drive d that's the ocz vertex 2. it's only been powered on 57 times and that's because my clients are advised to leave their computers on 24 7. it's been that way for years and that's why the power on hours are over a thousand days of straight power on um so over three years or or just under three years close enough to three years we'll call it three years of 24 7 usage day after day after day after day after day after day after day for three years and traditionally doing upgrades after sorry i might is my video blocking the uh it is i'm sorry let me let me get rid of my video here for a second i forgot that was on because i was full screen so let me go full screen again so i can show you one more time without my mug getting in the way we've been powered on 57 times and power on hours 25 891 hours which is nearly 1079 days and then again looking at the brand new a data and nvme drive that's only been powered on 10 times for only a total of two hours so i would like to prove to you because everybody can say whatever they want to say but until somebody actually proves it to you i don't know how you can take that as truth i don't know how you would be so willing to digest that and accept it without questioning it i think you should question everything and especially if that source is coming from the internet and if and when i ever have a customer bring me a computer that has a failed solid-state drive whether it's system a computer somebody else built or system i built for an upgrade they did or an upgrade i did if it ever happens i will share that with you why wouldn't i be fascinating so pc fanatic says i remember my old pentium 90 and benchmarking my hard drive at five megabytes a second yeah but files were smaller you weren't downloading any 500 meg nvidia drivers back then so caleb says couldn't that ruin the solid state drive if it's on 24 7. will you tell me what did you just witness most times when i get a call from a customer it's when they turn the computer on like they'll leave their work on a friday then they'll call me on monday when it doesn't work i advise all my clients if they want reliability leave all their computers on 24 7. how often do you turn off your phone do you have a smartphone how often do you turn it off you know that has solid state storage in it right why is that okay but this isn't think about the questions you're asking think about other items you don't turn off do you ever turn off your refrigerator so basically and again a refrigerator compressor will turn on enough but it's powered on 24 7. and you know the the smartphone is a better analogy because it's also using solid-state storage but it's interesting to me how we pick and choose with such a myopic view of things it's very common and i'm encouraging more critical thinking no it doesn't hurt the device to be left on it's better for the device to be left on it may not be better for your power bill but it's not taking that much power solid state drive isn't exactly a heavy usage so so so is it okay to make it go to sleep no no but when you when you have a mechanical drive go to sleep it spins it down so when it wakes it up it spins it back up again and that's when if you're going to have a failure that's more than likely when it's going to happen when i set power settings on a computer the only thing i let go to sleep is the monitor everything else stays on there's no reason to put anything to sleep unless you're running on batteries that's really designed for laptops and of course battery life is key it's very important in a portable machine that you have the longest battery life possible on a desktop plugged into the wall all you're doing is adding wear and tear to the component spice putting them to sleep and waking them up not only that they're all low power consumption so the only thing that's really taking a lot of power over the entire system while it's idle is your monitor so letting your monitor go to sleep is advisable so you have no screen burn in you're not paying that high electric bill and you're less likely to experience a failure it won't guarantee you're not going to have a failure but statistically you're less likely all of my customers that leave their machines on 24 7 i've seen a decrease in support calls by about 70 percent then i'm just thoughts off the top of my head that's that would be a number i would grab at support calls significantly decreased by more than half by always leaving the machines on and furthermore i'm able to work on their computers remotely after business hours and on weekends when they're not in the office what was that you okay i can work on their machines remotely with unattended access and uh and i can do windows updates driver updates even bios updates i do that all remotely now and i don't interfere with the productivity during the day and that saves me quite a drive by the way driving you know half an hour each direction to get there so so all my clients are advised to leave their machines on in a business 24 7. they don't have to i don't demand it you know it's their inconvenience i'm happy to build them for all my time it's no problem i'm a terrible businessman keller and bowser says sabrina is selling their new rocket 4.04 terabyte drive on amazon with the heatsink for 816 with tax and free delivery i couldn't get the heatsink to fit and it's a big heavy duty heat sink that even if i could get it to fit i wouldn't be able to get the graphics card in and it doesn't really dissipate it's really for looks i talked to sabrina about it and they they more or less confessed it's more about the looks of the heatsink i've got the four terabyte sabrin drive in my office computer and it's running beautiful no problems no heatsink it's not required hsync is mostly just there for the looks and you might find that that heatsink interferes with other cards in the computer and if so just take it off you don't have to have it i think it's a waste of money but the the four terabyte drive itself very happy with that susan says can you work on my computer remotely no i cannot the reason i can't is i can't see it nor have i ever seen it so i have no idea what i'm working on and i don't want to take the risk of liability and furthermore i am so backed up in work right now i've got people waiting poor thomas this is thomas's computer thomas paid for this computer two or three weeks ago and prior to that he was on a waiting list just to give me money i did a build video of this rig two three months ago that's how backed up i am so i just can't take on any more work and even if i could i wouldn't work on a completely foreign computer remotely it's too uh it's too much risk you know you could have a failing drive or a failing fan i can't hear it i'm not there i can't see it if i had worked on the computer within the last year then i would work on it remotely because i'd have some point of reference to what i was working on i would avoid anybody working on your computer remotely who has never seen it in person within the last 12 months cannot advise that i think it's too risky let me go back and let me shut this machine off because i think i've made my point so we'll go back to camera two here and we'll power down watch how fast this shuts down oh it's off that's crazy the good news is i'm sure thomas is going to be very happy with his computer the bad news is he's waited a long time for it so now that i've got the wi-fi installed i'll just clean these cables up we'll leave it just like that send it to thomas like this there's probably some windows updates i'm going to grab i'll check it one more time for any bios update since it's been such a long time and then the panels can go back on it and i can take it over to fedex and get it out of here and then there's muhammad muhammad contacted me after thomas they were in like days apart and i haven't heard from muhammad in two months so i will reach back out and see if muhammad is still in the market if he found another solution then there's michael michael wants a computer for his son's birthday and that's a whole new build and then i've got um um a couple mini itx builds just for fun i want to revisit that glass cage computer that our glass case computer that i built i want to replace the front fan on it but that's a one of me projects the xenos computer build needs to be finished i got that big cougar case that just for fun i'm gonna put that together for a laugh all right guys any final questions i'd be happy to answer them sharon says i just sent you a 10 amazon gift card well thank you sharon that's kind of you kaizensen says don't forget me what's your what's your name how do i know you because i don't know you under keizeinson the buick le sabre case that was the purebase 900 that's already shipped out and that was a hundred and fifty eight dollars to ship that to ohio carrie are you intending to build a 10th gen computer soon well i cannot get my hands on a 10900k but david in new york would like me to he's already got the parts and he's talking about sending me those parts to build it i do have two 10 700s and and the parts to build 2 10 700s these are not destined to any customer and i will probably offer them for sale when they're done but they're in the works along with another 3950x build with a an x570 based motherboard there's about 10 or 12 builds coming up like as of today next week there might be more but as of right now there's about 10 or 12. is it okay to put a 9900k on an h370 hd3 i hope so because i've got three h370 hd3s with 9 700 ks in them what did you just see i just showed you ron says when they bury you carrie they will say you drank too much coke well at least i'll die happy if you enjoy the video please let me know by hitting the blue thumbs up button that lets me know you enjoy content like this and you want to see more it'll cost you nothing you just have to move your mouse a little bit like this and then you click the button where the little thumbs up is am i asking for too much with 1200 people watching it sure would be nice to get about 800 likes that means two out of three people how difficult of a challenge do you think that'll be that's all right doesn't matter i don't make any money if you do it it's just a nice gesture if you appreciate the content anthony says what would you say to a customer who says their internet isn't good you do a clean install drivers customer then says the internet's not any better and you reset their router and then they say that they use their internet's their their neighbors internet well i wouldn't have done all that work until i found out who's your internet service provider and what speeds are you paying for that's the very first question i would ask the customer don't let customers tell you what to do george or jorge says carrie you've got some fans from lima peru right on awesome i think that's the first peruvian um what do i want to how do i want to say it viewer that i'm aware of it's participated in the chat so thank you paul says i would click like more than once but it won't let me just sit at 565 likes so that's less than half of the people watching that's all right you know whatever whatever i see rich robbins joins us hey rich you you might remember rich he joined me in a video what is it about a year a year and a half ago here in the kitchen eric says i just checked my samsung solid state drive it's been on for over 50 100 hours oh that's nothing he says it's been restarted 57 times powered on it's been powered on 57 times tim says you've been so busy carrie i just went ahead and built my own pc last weekend thanks for all the tips and now i'm doing the cable management right on tim that's awesome i don't make these videos to sell computers i make these videos to encourage you to build it yourself so i'm glad that that you ended up doing that yourself because that's what it's all about ricardo nobel says hello and greetings from ecuador welcome in ricardo thanks for joining us james says i'll be getting roboform family edition [Music] which is also 60 off oh are you squeaking lyle's squeaking at me it's not quite dinner time yet you're a little early boy i'm getting the sideways look oh he's getting up now no it's not no no you're way too early kiddo what's up jimmy jimmy oh watch the cable boy let me get this out of the way for the dogs snagit mark's farm says you made my 16 year old happy because watching you i built him a gaming pc and that's mark from wiltshire hey mark thank you that's awesome miguel silvera says i'm having a windows 10 error page fault in non-paged area with a blue screen do you know any fix that fix can come up for a number of reasons from bad ram to corrupt files in general the very first step would be to just do a clean install of windows 10 and see if the problem goes away if the problem does not go away then i would start uh checking ram and verifying that the ram is okay and i have videos that go walk you through that process but a clean install is your first diagnostic step eric kaufman has contributed five dollars he says drink another coke well maybe some gatorade but thank you eric thanks for supporting the channel caleb says what kind of dog do you have just type in carrie holtzmann space dog in youtube and there are several videos on that edgar says if any famous actors ask you to build them a computer nope so kevin says a clean install is not the first diagnostic step well for who kevin for a trained i.t technician or for a home user who doesn't really work with computers in a diagnostic level like uh so i you have to understand you you would tailor your answer to the person asking right are we are we not doing that now we just assume everybody is technical because if they were technical they wouldn't have asked the question but you know feel free to continue to contradict and challenge me because that's always a joy dennis says mitch is an actor but that and that should he's not a famous actor not yet not yet but this is true mitch is an actor he has been in commercials on tv it's a real actor i mean he acts like he likes me when he's here and how does he pull that off frankie b with a hundred dollar contribution wow he says here's a little something for the channel enjoy my brother right on frankie that's very generous thank you so much terry scoble with 10 australian dollar says thanks for the show today and the roboform discount that's from wickham western australia well thank you terry and i like your name terry sounds a lot like carrie i can deal with that marabonus wrote something but i won't read it because he's not a moderator you have to be in the chat to get that because it's funny ron says carrie you should give linda a bunch of pictures of jake and have her make a remembrance video i can use it when i need a good cry uh you know so so jake was this dog i used to have that i almost got rid of he was a stray and i just didn't want to see him get hit by a car or you know hurt by some bad people so i took him in with the hopes of finding whoever he belonged to and i never had a german shepherd didn't want a german shepherd and my friend ron was living near me at the time and i had him look at the dog and give me his thoughts and he's like that's a special dog you know that's something special about that dog i'm like well if you say so because i don't see it and he's like i i would keep that dog like if you don't find who it belongs to because i was telling him i was gonna take it to the pound if i didn't find the owner in a couple days he's like i wouldn't take that dog to the pound that's a special dog okay and i don't know maybe a week went by and something between me and that dog clicked and we bonded and then i was like oh i see what he was talking about now and he was with me for what 12 13 years something like that wonderful dog and the dogs i've got now are wonderful but they're no jake he's a real screwball and back then of course digital cameras you know the pictures are pretty small so i i do have pictures of jake and in fact i think there's some videos here on youtube of jake but uh they're lower resolution because even the cameras there was no hd back in the day by the time i had hd jake was kind of really old at that point not looking his best that's not how i want to remember the coral guy you know so um i have some 35 millimeter some photos from a 35 millimeter camera because i was into amateur photography and i would take pictures of him and then i had those scanned well i scanned them and then i've got those in my in my library i wonder if uh if i can pull any of those up let's see make ron cry so oh i guess they're not on the uh they're not on the server all right ron you got lucky this time did i miss something in the chat hold on a second give me just a minute i have a delivery but while i'm away i can see if i can find those pictures of jake and i can put him on the on the nas and i can share him with you he was a let's see those are pictures of old jake hmm all right now you're in trouble ron let's see let's sort this by transplant scaling right hold on fit to screen let's turn off camera one there he is that was pretty soon after i found him and i was surprised he wouldn't leave my side he was pretty well attached pretty quickly and i was used to having dogs that would try and run away you know when you'd open the door they'd try and get out and uh he would go out with me to the mailbox every day and check the mail it was our thing no leash scared the mailman jumped in his truck what are you jumping in your truck for because you got a dog he's friendly he doesn't bite he goes well he's got teeth don't he i go so do i i assure you you should be more afraid of me than the dog i wouldn't endanger you people say their dog doesn't bite and then it bites you this guy no jake never bit a person ever ever ever ever he never did very gentle soul that's that's sparky sometimes it's kind of to have this weird position it's kind of funny there he is so at that point i was writing my book and jake would keep me company when i was writing uh the healthy pc it was around 2005 no 2003. you see jimmy looks a lot like him that's not a coincidence so i would sit at my desk when i was writing and then that's where my feet would be right where he was and he'd just stay there keep me company he's very mellow very relaxed very calm cool that's an old altic lansing subwoofer back there apparently he's got something to say and that's the big bean kitty that's what it says on the collar of that toy that was my a bedroom in the house that was an old office that was my old office i was doing some computer repairs in there sticking his tongue out at me that's just rude jake look like a belgian malinois but he was actually german shepherd he's just a fawn colored german shepherd he does not have the head of a belgian malinois so after you know liking german shepherds we got another one but that one was kind of crazy look at that lovely floor i guess that's just jake's ear at the bottom of the screen so that's uh like i said that's a different german shepherd there and as you can see they took over the couch oh jeez look at all those remote controls wow i had a lot of remote controls back then so 1950s floor has a 1980s floor you can see how lovely my furniture was actually i never sat in that chair that was a chair just for the dogs jake knew where the dog cookies were and he would open that door with his nose he would push on the one because there's no handles on it so he kind of nudged the one door and then and then open it and then look up at the cookies and and you just gave him one that's all he wanted a lot of dogs you give him one they want another one another one he just took the one and he was happy for a few hours anyway that's funny that green toolbox i still have that today in my garage that's all my electronic soldering equipment in there did i ever get a chance to enjoy your sofa oh yeah they sat on the stuff with it that's sparky and you'll notice sparky looks a lot like lyle they're very reminiscent it's all by design that is not coincidence there's a computer case in the background how unusual but those two got along like they were raised together it's pretty interesting oh got an inch well those are the new floors that were put in after those other floors were pulled out get out of my face with that camera that's what he's saying and there's lyle see they're very similar about the same size very fluffy you think he's trying to tell me something nope back to jake so this would have been jake had to be maybe 10 years old at that point sparky was very proud to catch a pigeon and bring it in the house i just back to jake again young jake and then it's starting over and there is a um see if i can find it there is i should have some video of him oh this would have been yeah he would have been in good shape [Applause] [Music] the video looks [Applause] i wonder if it's the if it's the the media playback codecs that are causing that let me try a different media playback [Applause] well that's a lot better [Applause] sorry the audio's really loud on that i can just cut the audio we don't even need that audio yeah that big guy that was max he's a big he was a tall german shepherd see how calm jake is he's just checking things out what's everybody doing got no problems with nobody where's the other one at should be there somewhere yeah up by the fence we used to shave sparky in the summertime he looked like a different dog so there were three dogs that we had there was max sparky and jake they overlapped as jake was getting older i wanted to bring another dog in before before jake's time was up i was hoping that some of jake might rub off on the new dog but it did not happen that way at all that theory did not work so there he comes boom like a train just run right into you somebody wanted some attention there hey film me so there no matter how big of a dog you think you have all you have to do is go to the dog park because there's always somebody with a bigger dog these people had this great pyrenees and i thought max was a big dog until i saw this great pyrenees and i was like holy moly the size of that thing god yeah max doesn't look so big anymore none of those dogs look big anymore when that guy walks in and he's very calm he knows and there's his his brother her sister whatever and husky wants to play oh well it is a dog park so okay so me all right well you get the ideas so anyway um yeah a little history of the dogs there so so ron was kind of instrumental in me keeping that that jake the german shepherd and i kind of opened my eyes to how smart and loyal that breed was their loyalty is incredible so i hope you enjoyed that bit of a diversion from the normal information but today we've learned all about adding different ways of adding wi-fi to a desktop computer or even a laptop computer we've learned with proof about the reliability of solid-state drives and more evidence that i've just never had one brought to me or ever had one or a computer rather brought in for repair to um to diagnose and repair it hasn't happened and you'll see the data that was on the solid state drive has been retained without a problem it's been four or five years since that drive was last powered on nothing lasts forever you always need to have backups but the the talk on the internet is cheap when people talk from personal experience then it's how much personal experience you know are you somebody that has two or three computers in the last couple of years or is it somebody that works on two or three computers a day a week you know consider the amount of data that's being collected and what we can assert from you know more data more data more data we can get more accurate results and even the amount of of experience i have is very limited compared to how many drives were manufactured clearly it's a drop in the bucket but more so than just the average person on the internet's saying whatever they're going to say a lot of people that that are working don't have time to jump on the internet or the motivation or incentive to share their experience there's really not much in it for them so it's mostly from from what i can gather there's a lot of people who have nothing else better to do they're on the internet and they start these conversations and they perpetuate this false information or information that they believe to be true but with a limited data set my experience is mine doesn't belong to anybody else and uh don't misinterpret my experience for facts i can only tell you what i've experienced and then from that i can tell you that for example i've never seen a failed solid state drive so if you ask me do you think they're reliable i'm going to say yes i think they are reliable i've seen a lot of failed mechanical hard drives so if you tell me mechanical hard drives are more reliable i'm going to say that it's not my experience i disagree and unless you're a paying customer of mine i i really don't care what you're using because i don't have to support you and you know you're welcome to believe whatever you want to believe i'm just simply here to again share my experience which i think is is accounts for a bigger data set than for what a lot of the participants on the internet who have opinions on this are using to evaluate or to conclude uh these opinions and uh take from that which you want or don't you know sound good doesn't change my world um i want to thank everybody who's contributed during today today's live stream so we've got uh terry scoble and frankie b frankie very generous thank you so much eric kaufman moddy and hope you are feeling better and thomas robinson there is getting in under the wire with a one pound contribution and i guess we can just close out by uh feeding the dogs i think it's dog feeding time as you can see lyle already started to eat cardboard lyle are you hungry jimmy are you hungry you guys want some food are you hungry are you hungry so when a dog shakes that means yes i know it looks like no but it means yes doesn't it good boy all right here we go are you ready for this there's that for you bring this around you ready that's a good boy you're a good boy that's your he might jeff jankowicz says i am the first person to ever pronounce his name correctly i bet your mom and dad got it right but i'm glad i'm pronouncing it correctly and thanks for confirming that for me boran says hello i'm watching from bangladesh hey welcome in we're just wrapping up here there's a country somewhere that if you shake your head yes and no they mean the opposite they're thinking of albanians when an albanian nazis eddie means no when an albanian shakespeare said no it means yes yeah that's albania why do i know that i know that because there's a pizza place that i really enjoy run by some folks from albania and i wanted to learn some trivia to get to make conversation you know about studying albania and uh and i did some research online and then i guess it's true i've never been there but that's what it says online he said that wasn't true but his wife said he's lying he really means it is true all right let's give the boy some cookies and then we'll wrap it up for today what do you think you ready you ready for cookies oh boy what do we have today just regular costco dog biscuits all right i don't know what costco puts in these dog biscuits but the dogs go crazy for these can i have foot no give them foot give me the foot give me the foot give me oh oh he's like pay attention to me all right here and you all right he's probably gonna take it outside see you later bye here he goes i'm hoping uh that's way too close oh i see what the problem is i have to move that forward i'm hoping tomorrow i can either one of two things i want to do i either want to try the different coolers the hyper 212 versus the noctua versus the uh be quiet versus the there's a fourth one the hyper 212 evo oh this the mugen five the be quiet and the noctua on this 9700 ks processor and compare the installation method which one's easier to install compare the prices compare the noise level and of course how well do they cool or i have a new build to start as well so i haven't made up my mind yet what i'm going to do either way it all has to get done it's just the order in which it occurs so thank you guys uh again for watching i hope i will see you all tomorrow it'll be friday friday's coming might even be there already for some of you watching around the world it's all my friends in blue thanks you guys for helping to keep it civil in the chat room today and uh marty is telling me that i need food i'm doing all right marty um and to everybody who's not yet blue be kind be friendly i will see you and i will turn you blue after i acknowledge i've recognized your name a few times and that you've been a kind and supportive person just be nice i know it seems like uh a bizarre thing but in today's day and age it's actually quite rare to have a collection of nice people all together at the same time and i would like to make this community much much larger if i had anything i wanted i i would rather have this community of 10 000 people versus 10 000 i would much rather have the community and that sense of belonging and that sense of friendship and supportiveness in the world today i think it's more important than ever and i'm so glad you guys have become a part of that and decided to be a part of that that's going to wrap it up for me i will see you all again very very soon until then i'm going to close out the show my sister bro made a new intro for me that looks like it was made on an old 8-bit computer there's nothing wrong with your screen as an homage to 8-bit computing enjoy this intro and i'll see you all very soon you
