[Music] welcome back to the charismatic voice today is my choice tuesday and i am almost giddy with excitement because i heard from some of you recently in comments that lindsay sterling did a collaboration with pentatonix it's not the pentatonics but just pentatonix by the way and they did a song by one of my favorite bands to listen to imagine dragons i just love their vocalist by the way so we're going to listen to this cover today lindsay sterling uh in case you're not familiar with her she is a violinist uh really incredible creativity on her end she also does dancing with the violin has really fantastic reimagined covers as well and then of course pentatonix are an acapella group and they do really fantastic cover music too daft punk by them is one of my favorite examples of what modern acapella can look like so i'm so excited to see what this collaboration looks like let's get to it [Music] hmm i'm waking up [Music] oh my gosh i don't know how i didn't know that this existed this is exactly the kind of music that i would be listening to before i even started doing a youtube channel and somehow i totally missed it i'm not surprised what i missed out on things like classic rock or metal because those weren't things i listened to as much before this i listened to this kind of music before and somehow was completely unaware um this is really really cool to see how they've essentially said it in a post-apocalyptic kind of um world it looks like uh goes with the title radioactive very well of course uh very fun to hear scott up there on that leading line he has some of that grit in his voice that makes it feel a little more rough or raw which is really very very nice but the thing that i am also picking up about probably way more than the voices at this point is the fact that we have kevin who is their vocal percussionist beatboxer first of all his vocal percussion is super tight i love the style of it right now and then he's playing a cello so he and lindsay are busy duetting on those strings already super cool i'm excited to see what kind of dancing lindsay does in this for sure too also just wanted to point out at the very beginning we have mmms and as some of you guys know from watching this channel already mmms is a really good way to draw an audience into an acapella arrangement you see that as a pattern a lot as a way if you have too much sound at once it can be like hey yo sound blast but with acapella you have less of a range than you would with a full array of an orchestra or all kinds of electronic music you have less range to grow into so it can be really good song planning to start with something a little bit softer so you leave yourself a bigger trajectory to go through let's go back to the beginning a little bit listen to that ooh here you so expressive on the strings great makeup choices too [Music] listen to the way uh this is such a cool way to bring a little more energy into the sound to make it feel like it's arriving lindsay suddenly starts playing faster notes essentially in the violin i'm waking up i didn't even talk about that at the first time but that makes my breath just tighten up and like leave or maybe be held i can't even tell what's happening to my breath and i'm a vocal nerd so that's what it's doing i love this sliding sound on the strings i think it's just the cello about my pcello and violin both doing it such a great effect listen to that again [Music] this is [Music] awesome when i said ooh it was because i heard this pizzicato happening in the violin then uh and pizzicato's when you pluck the strings right and also in the vocals there was some um there was more separated vocals not necessarily staccato i think some of them were but the sounds were shorter overall so a lot more space between each i thought to myself why would you switch to pizzicato right there just a different timbre or just a different feel and then when they went into this chorus you hear me these longer lines it was a great way to shift it make something new but really make something that was going to very heavily contrast so when the chorus arrived it felt like much more expansive so check that out again [Music] age welcome to the new age [Music] wow i love this look that lindsay has right now that like i'm gonna get this look i have always found it so fascinating to see her do dancing with violin she really transcends uh a sort of ceiling that a lot of classical instrumentalists will hit and feel like how do i expand and reach a greater audience and she's combined this dancing and violin and all of these covers to really just be a huge name huge on youtube just huge in our world in general so much respect for that and to think that she's putting dance with it it's hard to move your body sometimes and play an instrument well and it's almost like she's developed her own kind of dancing to really match her play i always find it interesting to think about okay is she going to land the foot here so that she can put some more weight in how is she going to have really really clear excellent tuning on all of those notes that she's moving around so much does she ever feel stiff or sore in some way that's unexpected from playing and dancing at the same time so i think it's really really cool what she does let's go back to this chorus oh hi hi little tab bar [Music] radioactive radioactive really interesting to hear the arrangement of those voices when they're singing the woes um you have it essentially the unison octave so they're singing the same pitch names in different octaves and then when they go to radioactive they expand again in a different way and start harmonizing it and at least a few different harmony notes in there too so it makes it feel very thick it's very focused really very driven through and then it feels much thicker in the sound i also think it's really interesting to hear the way that kevin is using percussion you hear a lot of like kind of sounds in there that feel post-apocalyptic i guess it's the best way to put it he's really really creative it's fun [Music] very very fun instrumental break there and interesting i like seeing the way she has this red thing tied around her hand it really accentuates the movement she's doing as well fun to have them singing us into la las because it lets the violin take more center stage [Music] i was thinking to myself how did it sound like their sound um did it sound like their sound great phrasing got even bigger when it got to this chorus i was there's was a lot that was happening in there the duet between lindsay and kevin on the strings i think it was within a parallel octave again there was so much happening i'm just gonna go back and try and figure that out because it did sound like it got even bigger and that's really hard to do like i said in acapella arrangements [Music] i think it's largely found in the vocal percussion you hear like a sound that it sounds like maybe sucking in kind of like uh kind of like a bomb dropping honestly or an airplane that is about to break the sound barrier [Music] it's also got much thicker orchestration or arrangement for the vocals before you had lighter vocals in there with scotchline being more present and the string lines being more present but all of a sudden you feel like there's a huge choir that is entering and there was definitely a crescendo into that as well really cool transition [Music] and heavier [Music] i wonder when they're saying welcome to the new age it's definitely mitch on top oh by the way we should talk about all of these members let's see if i can find out is that there we go oh no haha [Music] okay you know what i maybe it's back here there we go haha now we can see everybody so essentially uh you have pentatonix that are in the background there's five of them and you have lindsay in front to the far right we have mitch which is uh high high high voice within the pentatonix you have kevin there he's level percussionist and also playing cello in this which i did not know he could do then you have scott who's singing lead and you have avi who is their base uh he was their base i think they uh he's an old member of the pentatonix different now and then you have on the far left you have kirsty so uh that's the whole group there together sorry i didn't mention all their names before [Music] it's interesting on the whoa part it sounds i definitely hear mitch's voice in there i think you suddenly have him being doubled by probably scott as well i like the way that their voices together are really making that line come forward and very interesting on that radioactive they've dropped the base and everybody went higher in addition to dropping all percussion and strings [Music] straight from inside [Music] wow that was such a beautiful tank of that section i in the original it doesn't have the sadness or the morning that i would have expected from a post-apocalyptic song to have this really brings that forward and gives a different feel that i in some ways i feel like are more true to the original words which is just insane to me i didn't expect them to make the song better wow that's gorgeous really gorgeous uh let's listen to that again you guys should listen to the original of the song and listen to this one right afterwards just to get this like the impact of how they've shifted this to make a version that feels very very true [Music] um [Music] [Applause] i'm waking sword i'm sorry did ami just have a sword did i see that liked avi before but i like him a lot more now wow that's cool anyhow swords are very cool um so the i really this section i feel like is been one of the most eye-opening section so far and i was not expecting that whatsoever everything's been really really good um it was lovely to hear oohs and mms in this way it sounded really sad mournful and then of course string instruments often are able to pull out this emotion that almost feels like it's a human voice this morning and i got that expression as well that was happening of course you have uh the bass not the bass the percussion the beat boxing as well was a lot more interspersed um so didn't have that drive it felt instead uh maybe more wastelandish a little more empty and then when that drive comes back and it helps us take us into this part where kirsty then whoo i loved that entrance it was really well suited for her voice she cut right through it it drew us back in very very cool let's see here [Music] she sounds great [Music] [Applause] [Music] is the combination here of what avi is doing in the bass and kevin in the vocal percussion really makes me think dubstep very very cool um to add that kirstie's again i hear i'm listening for her voice in this mix a little more now too she's able to really give it just a little bit more ping and bring it forward that's also some with mixing but then when she blends she'll sort of mellow it out just a little bit and it goes back into the group texture without necessarily losing her i love the way she's balancing or coming forward beautiful voice [Music] i feel like i missed the the feeling of the end of that because i stopped too too much before let's go back just a little bit and catch it again [Music] radioactive radioactive that was crazy good i i'm so excited you guys told me that this existed it's very thrilling um i really i love the way that they decided to do whoa again in those unison octaves at the end it was very effective to hear just that nothing else really going on a little bit of violin too there so you have that octave that's enforcing the melody and then every time they sing radioactive it feels like they split apart which i think is such a cool way to emphasize that word radioactive things splitting apart essentially oh man there was so much ear candy there so many cool sounds and the part where it got slower was so surprising i had no idea that it would have as big of an impact just totally out of the blue unexpected that is the mark of a fantastic cover they really have done something to make the original even better to shine a new light on the original song and i feel that that is that's incredible super incredible this combination of lindsay and pentatonix is wonderful i wish they would do more thank you so much to all of
