Liminal Space Neon Lights

[Music] so so bear with me here but as you may already know liminal space imagery is often bleak drab still empty just generally completely lifeless however it's considered an art form therefore many creative liberties can be taken i mean who's really to say what and what should not exist in a liminal space image for this reason i'll be looking at something that you'd normally think would juxtapose liminal space imagery being neon lights it's hard to imagine that these bright colorful lights can give the same effect as other liminal space images because as i mentioned they're often more associated with more desolate imagery but i'm here to show you otherwise so let us begin to explore liminal space neon lights by looking at some photos so i know i've already covered this one in my dead moles video but i really wanted to include it because i think it works as a perfect example for this topic the neon lights the top are super bright and colorful and i do mean the colors themselves as well the bright pink the bright blue and the yellow yet the image still feels empty everything in this photo besides maybe the baby chairs just feels right it just creates this perfect blend and not to repeat myself but it works as the perfect example continuing on to a similar looking image this one also seems to take place in a mall and i'm just going to take a guess and say that it's from the same mall but i could always be wrong and even though it's really bright the framing still makes it uncomfortable the really cramped small hallway right before the super open area and just the fact that you know there's a drop off here it just makes it feel liminal despite how cheery it may seem so here's an image that i know for a fact unlocks a memory for some people if nothing else then that super recognizable bowling alley style carpet but nostalgia aside the liminality of this image definitely comes from the fact of how open it is especially with the super high ceiling so with this image there's definitely a lot more emphasis on the neon lights themselves as they take up almost half the image just looking at the bottom half it's a pretty standard image it just seems to be some kind of lobby and overall it works decently well as a liminal space image but i actually just like the image itself it's just a pretty image this one especially compared to the last works great the darkness gives that dreadful feeling while still having the colorful neon lights and i think that works well partly because the colors in this image are fairly simple besides the outstanding purple and the random small green square it's really only black and white and i love that the neon lights lead your eye down the dark hallway you know what it is it just has this looming feeling to it that really encapsulates what it feels like to be alone when you feel like you're not actually alone so liminal space wise this image works great there's a lot to break down in this one firstly the image seems to be taken in a mall after closing something you never really see because how would you the only lights illuminating are the neon ones and the overheads from the closed stores which by the way the greenish light from this door coming off is not a pleasant looking one and adds to the creepiness that isn't even to mention the unidentifiable object to the left of this photo the image certainly has a lot of horror elements to it that are probably not even intentional but the more you look at it the more you realize and the worse the image gets looking at this image i really can't tell where or what this is but i see that more as a strength to the image than i do a weakness it makes you feel lost as if you're in this unfamiliar area with this calm blue lighting that gives off a somewhat relaxed energy and if i had to guess i'd probably say that this photo was taken in a movie theater hallway outside of the theaters themselves but again i really can't make out anything in this photo as you might have been able to tell from looking at these images these neon light photos can work great in both a light setting and a dark one on top of that they always will have something interesting going on with them visually whether that be because of the colors of the lights or the shape the lights take but which neon light photo was your favorite from the bunch personally for me i'd say it's a toss-up between the purple neon lights photo and the close maul photo i like the purple lights one a lot visually and just the colors but i do like how the closed mall photo is more
