hi this is Simon upst and welcome to another tutorial for Apple motion and today I'm going to show you how to light up your graphics like this looks pretty complicated but the technique is astonishingly simple and I think you're going to enjoy it so let's get to it so we're going to start out in in pixel meter and if you don't have pixel meter seriously go out and get pixel meter it's ridiculously good value and extremely useful for things like this so I'm in a new project and it's 3840 by 2160 and I'm just going to turn off this image layer here I'm going to select this text tool and I'm going to type some text I've chosen Rockwell bold for this and I'm using 800 pixels so I'm just going to Center this up so Center is 48 by 810 so then let's select this layer right click on it and convert to shape which gives us outlines then let's come over to the style menu here this paintbrush one so we don't want a fill but we do want a stroke and we want it to be 25 pixels and let's make it white so now we're all ready to go let's actually delete that image layer we don't need that let's come to file and export and from the drop down let's select motion project so it's going to create a motion project with a frame rate of 25 frames a second and a duration of 10 seconds so let's just navigate to wherever we want to put this and call this light path and exported so now I'm in motion and I've opened up that exported project as you'll see we've got all our paths here we've got our nice outline we're ready to go so what I want do is create a style for this so coming into the style I'm going to switch the brush type to airbrush and I'm going to come over to stroke and Jitter and I'm going to set that to 25% and you see this gives us this nice sort of jagged look to it so come back to style and let's just for convenience save this shape style and give it a name light Jitter so then what we can do is we can select the next letter down the I and just apply that from the menu so from the shape style menu I'm actually just applying that to each of the characters so the first thing I think I want to do is come over to the library and I'm going to bring in a noise generator and drop it behind everything else come to the inspector properties I'm going to rotate this through 90° on X and I'm also going to scale it up 500% then then I'm going to take this group here and I'm going to rotate it through -90 and then I'm going to add a camera just so we can see how this is all working so camera and let's just set the x rotation to30 so I'm just going to come back to my noise and I'm going to add a color and a hue saturation I'm going to take out all the saturation and for the time being I'm just going to reduce the value here but we will be coming back to this later on once we've added in our lights the next thing I want to do is I want to select all of these so shift select all those paths come to behaviors and shape and write on then let's come to like 180 frames on the timeline let's select all of these right on behaviors so I'm command clicking them to select them all and I'm going to come to Mark and Mark out and now their animations will be complete by frame 180 so then they all write on like that as one would expect Jolly nice so next I think I'll add the lights so add object light so I'm going to link this light to the path of the L shape so I'm going to do that with behaviors basic motion and motion path I'm going to switch the path shape to geometry and I'm going to grab the L and drag it into the source well there now we can't really see anything very much here but the first thing I want to do before I forget is to set the length of this motion path to be the same as the right on so that was what frame 180 wasn't it so with the motion PA selected I'm parked at frame 180 I'm going to come to Mark and Mark out and now the light is going to follow along with the right on Behavior so what we need to do is come to this light group and we need to adjust its Zed position so I'm going to go for 10 and then I also want to come to the light and increase its intensity up to 500 and then you can start to see and let me just turn off these overlays you can start to see that we're Illuminating the floor now what we don't want to do is to illuminate our letters so we're going to come to this light group and down to its lighting here we're going to just turn that off so now the light is following along like that Illuminating the floor so what we can then do is we can duplicate this light so right click duplicate come to Its Behavior and simply grab the I character like that drop it in I'm just going to park at the end here or towards the end so we can see this a little bit better duplicate this light again come over to the behaviors grab the G duplicate the light again come over to the behavior grab the H duplicate it one more time come over to the of behavior grab the T and now all of those lights are following along like that looking pretty nice I'm going to call this group here raise the one with the Light Group in it and to it I'm going to apply filters and blur and zoom blur I'm going to set the amount to six and I'm going to open up the center and I'm going to set this y center to2 now obviously this Zoom blow is giving us segments and we want to ni smooth effect so we can do that by coming to filters blur and directional blur set the amount to 200 and the angle to 990 and now that's much better so we've lost our original text on the floor so what I'm going to do is I'm going to select this group The Light Group and I'm going to clone it so make clone layer I'm going to drag it out here so that's behind the main raise group and let's just close that light group so now this is our main characters so let's call this main here so let's just increase the intensity of these Rays by selecting that group and coming to glow and adding a neon and you can see that immediately creates this really nice rich effect and if we really want to push it we can just increase that edge intensity let's leave it at say 15 for now and let's just add a little bit of Animation to our camera let's come to camera and sweep and let's set our start position to be -70 and our end position to be zero so now we get this and I think I might come down to my noise and that Hue saturation and just increase that value quite a bit so we can see more of the floor like so and what we can do is if we want to affect the color is Select this light group and come to filters color and levels and let's just take the red and reduce it down like that and then the green pull that out a bit like that and because our main text was a clone of this group here we are getting the color coming through like that and what I might do is also with my camera add a basic motion move and let's just adjust its Zed position I think let's go for -200 for the end just so it moves forward a little bit like that and the only other thing I probably might do is add some particles so let's just make a particle system from scratch let's select the circle tool let's draw out a very small circle like that we want to drag it out into a new group at the top here let's Center it up it's black so we don't want that let's make it white and let's just give it a little bit of a Feather say two and let's set its radius to four then let's make an emitter out of it so object make particles let's switch to 3D let's change to box let's set the size to 4,000 set the arrangement to random fill and let's have a birth rate of five a life of four speed of 10 speed randomness of 10 capacity over life let's open up let's click here at the end to make a tab for the end let's click in the middle to make a tab for there so this end one let's set to zero and this one to set to zero as well let's set the emitter to be screen and let's set the opacity down to something like 30 and so now they will give us this nice sense of depth quite subtle but it really helps with effects like this if you just Dro in a very simple particle system like that so just two more small tweaks I want to make I want to come down to this clone layer here and I want to add a neon filter to that as well so glow and neon and just set this mixed value down to something like 10 it's not much but it just helps to give that glowing effect there so then what I'm going to do is select all of these lights so command clicking those there I'm going to set their intensity down to zero and then I'm going to select this top one here I'm going to add a ramp Behavior to that intensity I'm going to ramp from 500 down to zero and we want a start offset of 180 frames which if you remember is where our righton Behavior finished so I'm going to select that ramp copy it select the other four lights and then right click paste so then they've all got that fade off of the lights like that which I think is just a little bit tigh so that's the effect very simple to set up but I think it actually looks rather nice so thanks very much for watching and I'll see you again soon
