[Music] hello and welcome to the Austin aquatics pre-course swimming skills evaluation you're most likely watching this because you want to become a lifeguard in this video we'll cover the swimming skills that you need to demonstrate before moving on in our lifeguard certification course the evaluation is a three-part test the 300-yard swim the two-minute water tread and a timed brick kerry simulation test now let's dive into the details the first part is the 300 yard swim you must demonstrate continuous swimming and rhythmic breathing as you complete this section using the front crawl breaststroke or a combination of the two for the front crawl you'll notice that our swimmer is continuously moving her legs and arms and her head goes back into the water after she takes a breath for the breaststroke the arms are pushed forward and then swept back in a circular motion while the legs are tucked in toward the body and then kicked outwards notice again that our swimmer places his head back under the water after he takes a breath when approaching the wall you may use an open or close to turn but you may not rest the second part is the two minute water Trek refrain from using your hand by tucking them under each arm and do not allow your head to fall below the surface the third and final part of the evaluation is the time to brick rescue this portion of the evaluation simulates a lifeguard water rescue process without goggles swim 20 yards surface dive down to retrieve a 10 pound brick about 7 to 10 feet deep swim on your back using only your legs to safely carry the victim with you to the pool edge finally exit the pool without the use of any assistance upon successful completion of this skills evaluation test you'll move on to the lifeguard course and will be well on your way to becoming a city of Austin lifeguard [Music] thanks for watching and good luck on your evaluation [Music] you
