welcome in this video you will see demonstrations of American Red Cross Lifeguard prerequisite skills these are required skills that must be demonstrated prior to coursework for American Red Cross Lifeguard certification the three required skills that will be demonstrated are a 300-yard swim treading water and a timed event we begin with the swimming requirement to successfully complete the skill swim 300 yards continuously while demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing candidates may swim using the front crawl breaststroke or a combination of both however swimming on the back or side is not allowed swim goggles may be used and are encouraged open turns and flip turns may be used however a successful swim is completed with no stoppage of movement this is not a timed test as long as candidates are adhering to requirements and consistently moving forward the next skill is treading water candidates must tread water for two minutes using only the lakes hand should be placed under the armpits the skill must be completed and watered deep enough where the candidate cannot touch the bottom of the pool it is important to experiment with what kick works best to keep the head vertical common examples include a whip kick scissor kick flutter kick and eggbeater kick the final skill is the time brick retrieval this skill must be completed within 1 minute and 40 seconds to successfully complete the skill start in the water and storm 20 yards on your front in most 25-yard lap pools this distance is marked by backstroke legs using swim goggles is not allowed for this skill when approaching the location of the brick surface died of either feet first or head first to adapt between seven and ten feet to retrieve a 10 pound object this is usually a diving brick however a free weight or plate may be used once the weight is retrieved it must be held with both hands for the remainder of the test return to the surface and kick for 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point the candidate must keep both hands on the object while keeping it near the surface it helps to keep the brick higher on the chest rather than down by the abdomen as this will lower the hips which results in swimming uphill making it more difficult to complete once you reach the starting point place the brick on the pool wall and exit the pool without using a ladder or steps the clock stops when both the brick is on the wall and the candidate is sitting on the wall this concludes our video demonstrating the three prerequisites for the American Red Cross Lifeguard course
