LIFE AS A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER! waking up, getting organized, + watch me read!

[Music] [Music] so I'm very excited to be making this video I'm also multitasking and at the same is my name is Brittany I am a high school English teachers putting this lotion on smells so good oh this morning at 5:35 I set my alarm for 5:30 laid for like it's and then I just thought going don't really hard to get out of bed in the morning because it's just pitch black still and I feel like a lot of people who work who don't have to you know like be there at 7:00 a.m. it's just a lot easier for them to like wake up because of the light but I just heard on my side lamp and just kind of force myself to get up and then turn on as many lights as possible and play music and all that what what not and this one's coming up now so it's time but let's go make some breakfast and then head to school okay so I don't drink coffee this is just hot lemon water which is so good and good for your digestive system I just use computers and I make my breakfast to go this is the part where I start rushing and stuff like tea minute so this is the so delicious yeah unsweetened coconut yogurt I just pour it in I'm really trying to find a bigger container of this where I can just scoop it um but I honestly had no luck just if you guys know where to get it my grocery stores are like Trader Joe's Whole Foods Fresh Market Publix I know and then I'm just gonna cut up this banana I know it's very aesthetically pleasing to watch but I'm on a time crunch sisters there's gonna chop this up boom jealous blueberries and I just throw those in I had cinnamon this will do so I have this in the morning but not yet I'm gonna bring it with me to school this is my trendy lunch bag it's just a blueprint bag I use juice from them sometimes so far I have a salad packed from last night I like made my salad and then the yogurt I'm gonna just grab an energy bar I'm obsessed with these they're so good um they're by four they actually give me energy because they're made with green tea it's like natural anyways let me clean up and then we're gonna get going [Applause] good morning we're now in the classroom hey bruh I had a conference this morning I also started going the wrong way I don't know I'm just like losing my mind but had a conference so I didn't have time to like come here and setup or anything but I've personalization first period which is study hall so they're just as you can see studying hanging out getting ready for next year exam exemption forms all that stuff so I'm going to grade check emails study hall things [Music] [Applause] okay so personalization lighting why do the green your personalization just ended or study hall we call it either one depends on the day so now my English students are about to come to class it's my first period of English for the day I have the schedule up on the board so it says come inside take a seat spit out your gum problem like Tronics and headphones away have a computer and log on to soccer Devon I'll show you how I project that and then I also put the schedule because it's nice for students to be able to visually see what's going on because ninety minutes is a long time to be in class so it says attendance finish diversity and culture project look check which is almost like a quiz but not really I just like to see where the students are at because if they're not understanding something then I like to go back and review and they're gonna work on their seminar notes because we're gonna do a Socratic seminar very soon so that's gonna be good and then we're gonna read eleanor and park thirty pages today so we got a lot to do in 90 minutes let me show you an outfit first so i got this dress from thredUP it's just like an online threat store and I believe it was from Target actually and the tags were still on it it was new but I just put this big cardigan over it because it's so comfy and my classroom is so cold and then I wear these shoes all the time they're from Lucca and gray it's also just the end of the year and I'm going through a lot of stuff right now and just getting rid of things I also want to plug in my twinkly lights whoa I would read more like come on this use these they're the twinkly lights I've had them for a little while now I just have such a big pack and I keep them at home and then I bring them in and put them in my classroom so yeah I think that's everything let me show you what the screen looks like so it's just really basic also my screen is crooked but I just do this on a Google Doc and I just change it each day so it's like welcome back come in read all information you know it's not as cute you know they just need the information when it comes to high school so let's let them in but you know we're friends we're supposed to talk about these things this actually Park said this is why I didn't tell you all right someone want to read 35 Eleanor thank you that's Bob either the kids would tell her or she'd find some clue Eleanor had overlooked or something it would be something Eleanor didn't have anywhere to hide her secrets in a box on her bed at parks house a block away she was running out of time with him that's where we're gonna stop like I promised have 25 minutes I don't mind if you listen to music you're gonna take notes on the Socratic notes I'm gonna put them to cronicbeats I'm gonna put these back on the board ap students you can grab the worksheet and I believe that's it I don't want to get too into this because I want to see what you guys come up with for next class any questions play music as well but you know some of you are into my stuff [Music] okay so it's later in the day now I'm just been checking emails and then I'm getting ready to leave but today with an overall pretty successful day the students took a book chat people say Socrative some people say socrata v' and you can basically do like multiple choice true or false right ins and I just did a 15 question book check just so I can see where they're at with the book that we're reading and it's nice because in the end it shows you the percentage that the class got right and then the ones I got wrong so it shows me what we might need to work on or what I might need to reinforce so those are always helpful we're reading Eleanor & Park and this is awesome because it involves a lot of higher-level thinking this is a young adult literature book about a girl named Eleanor and a guy named Park and they're very different and yet they come together and I don't want to spoil it but it's just like Romeo and Juliet where you see two people who normally wouldn't be together so we're doing a lot of comparing and contrasting from this to Romeo and Juliet which we previously read so I'm really excited because next class we're doing the Socratic seminar I gave them the topics today I want them to be thinking about you know how we can compare their family dynamic to Romeo and Juliet and then how we can also talk about things like mental health and character and what's gonna happen with their relationship making predictions so we're hitting a lot of standards through having those discussions I don't do seminars and discussions until the end towards mainly the end of the year or the second half of the year because I really like to give the students an opportunity to get to know each other and feel comfortable because it is a big deal for some students to speak in class and I get questions all the time like how do you push your students to speak to present I do it little by little so whether that's coming up with a group and just feeling you know safer especially because my classroom is pretty small and it can be really intimidating to have to stand in front of a class so you know I just want to build their confidence because I know that they might have to take public speaking they might have to interview for a job so these are all things that will really help them and I'm always just trying to benefit them for the future so that's what we did today we did the book check and then after I went over those talking points I actually went over them before as well so that they could start taking notes after the check always give your students something to do when they're done taking a quiz or test or book check or whatever it is so they're not just like sitting there so they were working on that and then we read as far as reading goes sometimes I have to read the whole thing sometimes they'll read in groups sometimes they'll read silently a lot of my classes they like to read so they volunteer and then they'll read out loud will switch back and forth I like to pause a lot so you guys if you watch my other teaching vlogs you see a lot of the times I make worksheets with questions with guided questions for the rating so we'll stop and go over it but for this book I don't have questions it's the end of the year I want to give them a break and instead we verbally talk about this is all about having conversation collaborating and that's why we're doing the Socratic seminar with this so I'm just really excited they did very well on the book chat which is good to know and then yeah after that when we were done reading they just continued working on their talking points for the discussion we listen to music and that was really it it was a pretty chill day I saw I ate that salad I was like munching on it during the reading so by the time you saw it there wasn't much in it but there was like carrots cucumbers olives that dressing is pretty good from Trader Joe's does I want to show you guys The Blackout poetry it back there I don't think I've updated you on this so let me show you basically what blackout poetry is is I give them a sheet from a book and they scan the book and this was during Romeo and Juliet so I have them scan it and they have to try to do a they have to try to create a poem based on topics from Romeo and Juliet so like love hope faith tragedy and they're all so different but they did amazing this is one of my favorite ones and it says I don't know that's gonna focus but it says we thought we had time and I just think that's so powerful because it's true we always think we have more time so these are just absolutely beautiful they knocked it out of the park this is really fun to do with your students and it's very easy as well I just think you have to show them a lot of examples and tell them that you know they can be really creative it doesn't just have to be shading things out they can make a whole drawing based on you can see this person like shredded the paper I told him they could burn the edges with supervision so these came out really nice it's been a while since I've made these videos because there's been a lot of chaos between testing and then we had break and then I'm finishing stuff with my students and I just want to be president think about picking up a camera during lunch I just want to like eat my lunch grade papers answer emails but I'm happy that I was able to have a more organized day to day no more worrying about state testing and having to meet those goals it's more just about enjoying a good book and showing students that reading can be enjoyable and can be fun and yeah let me know if you like these types of videos and what you want to see since the rest of the year should be pretty calm and it's
