this time on finnegan's garage it's project time we are building the ultimate welding table to make me a better welder lord knows i can use all the help i can get [Music] thanks for watching do me a favor like this video and subscribe to it tell your friends and i just learned about something i didn't know existed which is like the super commenter i had no idea there are really cool people out there that are commenting and donating to the channel normally i just ask everybody to please buy a t-shirt or some stickers or a hat to help the channel uh there were actually people out there commenting and saying hey here's five bucks and i didn't know it and so i found out i went back in i was thanking everybody but um i just want to thank you guys because like every dollar you send our way goes right into the crankcase of my hemi usually or whatever other thing i've broken so thank you guys i appreciate it [Music] mom [Music] i want you to appreciate what's about to happen here this is eleven hundred dollars worth of steel oh boy yeah so let's not screw up oh they were lighter this morning when they were on a forklift you got the thick stuff they're much heavier now yeah this is two by two quarter wall no 3 16 wall it was gonna be quarter wall and then i was like man that's really heavy let's not do quarter wall we'll do three sixteenths wall but we're finally gonna have a welding table like biggins which is gonna be awesome now if only you could weld like him oh that's the table just kidding that's what's been holding me back all these years uh no your glasses my eyesight and the table i hope you ate your wheaties cause this is gonna suck i hope it ain't too much because it that is three-eighths thick hot rolled steel plate and it is five feet long and four feet wide you know if we back the truck up a little bit it'll come up a little higher or we just be mad and slide it on there that wasn't so bad now we just it's gonna suck when we gotta flip it on to the casters we don't have now we're going to just shove it right onto them so we need to measure our new table that height that's actually that's the height i've been used to working with well like i said you need to get in a comfortable stool or chair and let's make the table for that that way you can sit down and be comfortable and work the pedal yeah let's start talking about table design so right or wrong i've been tig welding using this stool for like seven years now i think this stool came from my friend robert johnson might have left it at my apartment one day i don't even know but uh yeah that's what i've been sitting on pedal here table height about here this is where i'm comfortable and the reason we're jumping through all the hoops and spending all the money to build a new welding table is i want a welding table that's a little more comfortable to weld with and i didn't know i was not comfortable until i visited customs by bigen in mooresville north carolina where inside of that shop bigen aka eric yost had a welding table that actually wrapped around him and had a cutout in the middle so that he could get in here rest his elbows have the piece whatever he's working on around him which is awesome and as soon as i noticed him doing that and as soon as i got to use his table i came home and went i'm up against mine i can't get to the work piece i can't get my head as close as i wanted to like i just thought that's the way to go and so i just dropped 700 some odd dollars on this piece of 3 8 thick plate and another almost 500 on 2x2 3 16 wall steel tubing to build the gussets and legs for it and today we're going to build not our ultimate table but real close to the ultimate table what we can have in finnegan scratch so right now i'm just going to lay out the cut out and figure out how wide it needs to be for me to get in here and be comfortable so i'm about yeah i'm about that wide which about 16 inches obviously i don't want any touching the side of it i want to be able to get in and out of here easily so probably a little full width of this thing 24 inches so a 24 inch wide cutout is probably pretty good let's see let's see here 24 gives me about a hand between me and the cutout and i've only used biggins table once so i still don't know what i don't know you know if i'm trying to quickly get in and out of this or if i'm working from the sides like what how wide does this need to be while still making the table user friendly this is a five foot wide table so we're going to have a good amount of space on each side but i feel like i don't want to go too small with the cutout so this is 24 inches right here i'm almost thinking you know 28 is probably the way to go i should text eric and ask him all right so if we go 28 then it's a matter of how far in do i want to be able to go and i'm thinking not halfway right but maybe close to it so this is 48 inches so maybe an 18 inch cutout allows me to get in here but still have a pretty wide table to put parts on oh dude so bigen's cutout is 24 inches wide and it's cut out is 18 inches deep him if he may ask him if he could if he would change it would he let me just call him morning about to cut out my welding table and uh you had said yours was like 24 inches wide and 18 inches deep the cutout yes would you change that if you could um would you go wider no that's worked out worked out pretty good you know if you got a you know anything you know uh no i mean that's worked out pretty decent i don't think i've had anything that that's not you know man like you can lay lay stuff sideways if well like tail pipes or something and headers can lay on there real nice and you don't have to you know be you can be into it and not be on top of it i feel okay 24 by 18. cool yep awesome yeah but i just took uh like where they were they met in the middle uh like in the corners i just took like a three inch hole saw and then hole saw those corners and that got my radius and then just uh plasma cut from the end into that hole saw so that the round piece was already done yeah that's what i was thinking of doing yep yep all right cool awesome thanks dude we're gonna yeah we're start cutting a hole saw yeah no he's probably got better hole sauce than us yeah and a better drill and uh probably a drill press that he could put this piece of plate up into oh i bet he had a mag drill you ever seen one of those that's what he had dude we don't have that but uh what we do have is a lot of flap discs and a plasma cutter so yeah we'll just we'll just put something around there and put the torch up against it and plasma cut yeah the thing and then just finish it i the only reason i was thinking of making it wider was like when you're in a hurry and i rush to get in it i mean obviously we're going to round the corners out here but i don't see you running in there and like stabbing myself right now we're going to lose the shop get in there and weld something you still have rollers on it you're just rolling in really fast oh dude yeah all right 24. that just leaves lots of meat out here 24 by 18. got it eric's about the same size as me so i think that i think i can do it sorry i wasn't going to say anything but okay now it's out there dad buds all right is there anything else you want to do like a tool holder or anything like i know you have the little tig torch is there like you want to put a hole in it like to drop your torch into or anything or i don't know but we can do that afterwards i want to sit down and then go you know what i'd like to do you need to get on pinterest and pinterest is that a thing there's got to be oh god i guarantee there's some welding dudes that would be hilarious because think about all those guys are really good at making stuff look purple and gold you know they're on pinterest those guys that have like perfect torch control perfect heat control every weld looks amazing they're on pinterest for sure guys like me are on instagram every now and again it's like whoa look dimes what color are they don't worry about that put it on instagram this is the miller spectrum 375 extreme plasma cutter it is a fantastic machine we're going to use compressed air and electricity to cut through metal now that is rated to 3 8 of an inch thick which is exactly what this is so we will be maxing the machine out hopefully with fantastic results i don't know if i've ever cut three eighths of an inch thick stuff with that before we're about to try so i'm changing cups this is the cup that usually comes with it this is what's called a drag cup and this allows you to set the torch on the work piece and drag it across it without the tip touching the work piece and uh this is good helps you keep a steady hand i can't wait to finish this table put it in the room where you want it and then like outfit the room yeah the room definitely needs finishing i feel the same i'm excited to finish the room now the key to this working is the right travel speed and keeping the torch straight up and down so [Music] sure see i just wanted to get in here to weld now that's sweet i think that's right 24 inch cutout perfect now we've got to cut the corners and clean it up [Music] time to get after it new burn has cut all of our 2x2 box tubing now again this is 3 16 wall it's very very thick very heavy duty it'll give us a stable platform for our top of our welding table we're building our new welding table on top of our other new welding table this is a rhino cart it's by strong hand tools this is basically a fixturing cart it has a bunch of 5 8 holes in the top that are precision drilled and chamfered so that you can apply all kinds of cool tools like these clamps for when you're building something and you want to hold it steady lots of variations for how you can do that it also has an optional plasma table on this side a bunch of other trinkets you can add to it um we use this table not for like grinding or really hardcore stuff we do it for when we want to do some precision welding to hold things down so i'm going to protect the top with some anti-splatter stuff this is water-based i've never used it before it's by walter surface technologies they make those good killer flap discs and whatnot and so i'm just going to put that on there so that when i'm mig welding the splatter doesn't stick to my table because this is a nice table like nicer than the one we're building um the other one we're building will be for everything but it'll go in that room over there which is where we're going to do most of our tig welding and you know stuff that's going to be clean so right now we'll clamp this down this is part of the base this is one of the legs actually this is one of the braces but we're going to make a frame that has four casters on it and then the top will go on that and then put the casters on that and roll it in there and then the table is done so this i don't even know where i got it from it might have been home depot but basically you can adjust the angle of this tool it's two clamps it's an inside or outside clamp and this is what we'll use to set our 90 degree angle between these tubes and then we'll verify the angle just by putting a square on it now we can set these right here and then we can go ahead and use the strong head clamps to hold the thing down but if we add this to the inside then it's less likely to move when we're welding it so that looks like it's about 90 degrees okay so then get this out of the way [Music] do this right in theory it's very loose okay now in theory that's 90 degrees oops doesn't want to go in there now okay so we're square on that one and it looks like looks like we're square there all right so now that i know we're square i'm going to clamp this edge down here clamp this edge down okay now we can weld this and it's flat to the table the two pieces are perpendicular to each other this will work out good and so now when we go to add this piece here it should all line up pretty good we're going to be using the trusty miller multimatic 220 ac dc uh obviously we're mig welding so we'll have a mixture of uh argon and carbon dioxide there and um we ran out of the wire we should be using which we were using o35 on this this is 3 16 thick wall 030 would have been all great as well but we ran out of all of that so we're now about to use o23 wire which i've never used wire that thin to weld something this thick um it's not like we're going to race this table so it should stay together it should be fine but let's find out what happens when you do that it starts smooth i love this machine it does well good like even when you're using arguably the wrong size wire for the job like it's a good welding machine and look at that like all that all that mig welding and nothing stuck to the table that stuff is water-based that's cool you can spray it on and you can go right to welding whether it's dry or not which is pretty sweet [Music] [Music] base of the cart is done time to put it on the floor mount the adjustable casters then flip it on its wheels and put the top on it and shove it in our new and improved welding room why do we need a welding room well we were doing all the grinding and cutting in that area of the garage which is right next to the uh the ac for the house and we made such a mess on such a consistent basis that we kept clogging up the filter for the a-system ac system and shutting off the air conditioning and so i thought well let's reorganize the garage and we'll put all the cutting and grinding and sanding tools and stuff here and then we'll just weld in that room so that room is now a clean room and we'll keep it clean it up where we can you know keep tig welding in there i mean hell we could build a motor in there if we needed to and uh by product of all that is we'll have to call the ac man every now and again when the ac craps out just because we clogged the filter saving money on filters yeah is that the reason we're doing this no i just like rearranging the garage at all times uh-huh i've literally rearranged this garage in the middle of a faster with finnegan shoot when i saw something and i went you know that was over there this would go a lot better and the next thing you know that was over there this was over here and there's nothing to plug up nowhere there was no airlines for whatever we're trying to do so all that had to be redone yeah and if you watch that episode of fast food finn again like two-thirds of the way through the chute everything's moved you just look in the background everything is out of place it's great i like it i might just keep doing that just i might just move things about small things like maybe a can i'll move a can about and see if anyone notices that's a good idea we should like just put stuff in a certain spot and then if somebody notices it they'll have like a free shirt yeah it'll be like the starbucks cup in the game of thrones that was like a big deal on the internet for us it'll be oh the dissander moved yeah free t-shirt if you notice i love this table swing it that way and then we'll pull it down on the floor in fact the welder can go in the welding room now my wife took a vacation where is she california was it random or was this planned it was talked about months ago and then she wasn't gonna go for i don't know what the reason was and then she was kind of waffling on it and i was like just go dude go take a vacation you're like superwoman like you you know you cook you clean you work the kids all this stuff just just go i can i can handle this for five days we're not cooking or cleaning nothing we're going out to eat yeah we'll do the laundry you know the night before she gets home lots of festival but i will keep the kids alive i've been eating frozen pizza for three days i'll eat no keep the children alive that's really my job is just keep them alive for real when you think about it like the first birthday party that kid's never gonna remember that first birthday that is for you as a celebration that you kept the kid alive right which is why it should just be alcohol and strippers like there really doesn't need to be any balloons or okay what are you going to do you going this way are you going that way how you how you laying this thing down i really didn't have a plan i was just going to go off all right let's just go off then just follow your lead oh my god it's heavy this is not breaking good lord oh yeah [Music] i like to think that won't tip over well like i said once the plate's on there there'd be a lot more weight here right yeah because this is all cut out yeah yep okay so here comes one of those cool time lapse segments where we install casters and by we i mean him and chris puts cool music that you guys ask about i never know the name of [Music] all right moment of truth okay just pretend these aren't zip ties instead they're short pieces of tungsten and leftover filler rod pieces that are too long to be in the normal tubes genius all right and then the positioner we'll take it off this piece of wood later but it can just sit here at all times and then oh dear this is a great office i may just move my laptop here for when i'm not welding this is hey that's a good idea dude this is great needs one light right here and then i'm ready let's go so you can't tell but we had a bar across right here it got in this way of his feet in the pedal we didn't think about that when we put it together so we uh we added these 45s right here and uh we cleaned it up nicely it's like it never even happened uh much better all kinds of room under there and the frame is countersunk about four inches in here so we can go around the edge of this table and clamp stuff all the way around man i'm in love it turned out great it really did really did like this is let's let's let's make something let's watch them let's not mig weld a frame to anything right now let's let's take a little something let's build like the fifth set of headers for the c10 for the boaters just because yeah you got a new boat even though it came with uh manifolds like ready to go for the turbos let's just make some new ones this is so cool man all right give us an ending thanks for watching finnegan's garage um i don't know what we're doing next but there's a lot happening we're to work on the cadillac we're going to work on that new jet boat uh we bought a corvette the ram truck the ram trucks bag the ram truck's back we're definitely working on that because it's in the way that's usually how things go around here what event do we got to get to and what's in our way that's how things go thanks for watching [Music] [Music] you
