so excited that on my trip here to New York I managed to get a slot with Dr Erica Schwarz now lot with thank you so much now for those of you who don't know Dr Erica yet because many of you have been on my journey with Dr Erica she is to me I would say without doubt the foremost expert on hormones that I have ever met and I've met many many experts and you've written how many books now on this about eight about eight books the hormon solution being one of my favorite books and also now you're doing papers at symposiums talking about longevity and talking about hormone effect in our life and aging anti-aging we don't use we don't call anti because we're not anti anything we're just going to make it longevity optimizing your life making things great and you know what as long as you live you live but it should be high quality high quality because women we talking to women yes more than anything else I mean men already get it women need to get it that you become more important as you get older because you have the experience you have the knowledge and you don't have to worry about the things that you had to worry about which is like raising kids exact hormonal and all of that exactly but I think that we have lots of different conversations and we can do links on this too to that kind of just what is menopause how does it affect you what's par menopausal but I I think today I want to kind of dive in the deep end because I have so many women who will say to me is it just that sort of going into mental cuse does it mean that I'm just going to lose my weight and I don't want to just talk about Aesthetics here but lose my momentum brain fog lose my how I saw my shape my energy levels everything and I do come across a lot of women who are put on a routine sometimes very simple um HRT routine and they still have symptoms that I think they shouldn't have if they're on the right rou corre um but I want to ask you is there a way that you can be mid menopause that you don't feel it at all and why is it that some people still do H that's a tough question right I know I like to um you can get you don't really need to drop off the cliff at menopause none of us do I've been doing it for almost 30 years you know that and what I've learned is how to balance people's form hormones but it's not just about hormones it's in your hands it's about how you change your diet because you can't eat the same thing when you're 50 that you ate when you're 20 because your body can't process it so let's talk about that a little bit because there there is that quality of life and if quality of life for you is three glass of wine with your girlfriends or is quality of life for you what you're prepared to give up to get back certain things you thought you'd lost forever how do you talk to a woman who says but I love this this is an element of what I think makes me happy in my life although I'm going to caveat that with seeing women in their 50s that I feel have a little bit more of depression it could be because the effect of a bit too much wine or whatever is is not helping that as well so I want to know how sugar and alcohol have an effect on your body physically and on your mental health so your hormones are leaving yeah and that's what menopause is really about but the thing is hormones are changing at all ages so it's not just that menopause that all of this happens so you have to realize that at menopause you need a different kind of hormone balance ah to maintain it so you can get away with you don't need the same hormone balance as if you were 30 you're not trying to have a child have exactly exactly so the thing is that if you change your diet and I understand I have people coming into to me all the time saying I love my glass of wine I need to get without it I can't live I like I like my chocolate pudding just like and chocolate Cravings right and I say listen I'm not going to take anything away from you because I don't want you to feel deprived yeah and you already feel deprived because all of a sudden you're losing your period you don't look the same way you did like you said your body starts changing all of a sudden you don't know who you are yeah and I think that the point is that I won't take anything away it's about you realizing what you can do to add things back in your life exactly and as that attitude change it's a perspective change exactly it's all about changing perspective and saying listen let's see what happens if I don't have that third glass of wine or that second glass of wine and how do I feel and like what you say said is so crucial because you know the brain you you know there's no separation between the brain and the rest of your body it's all the same and as you see that you don't want to walk up in a brain fog you don't want to wake up in the morning and not be able to function what are you willing to give up or change not even give up because you look at it it's giving up yeah but change have better function and connection to everything because you're not feeling cuz I think brain fog how I interpret it is there's a disconnection with life because your comprehension of things is not as correct like this so you're feeling that Detachment from being a part of everything and I think brain fog is one of the most debilitating things we talk about it generically but how is it medically what's isting because it's disconnecting and as you disconnect and you're not part of the community anymore you get old and as you get old you fall far behind and then you can't count catch up and medically your hormones are leaving you your brain is not working the way it worked before so so what are those hormone which hormone is related to the brain fog which I me all of them so Eastern progesterone testosterone they all contribute all and oxytocin so oxytocin is the hormone that we make from the brain um the pituitary right the main hormone basically that when you have a baby that connects you to the baby that's where it comes from it's what makes your uterus shrink after you deliver a baby um and if you never child does it not get activated it does and actually when you hug you get oxytocin when you pip your dog yeah you release oxytocin so it's a happy hormone it's a loving connector hormone and I think if we all focused on getting that one released we do L that okay I want to know immediately everyone would know want to know watching how do we because we what you're saying is we just stop making so much of it we stop making it together with everything else so how do we feed what do we feed ourselves to make it again can we reverse that yeah we can we can always reverse that I mean you can add it by getting it from the outside world obviously like you can get a synthesized oin what would that be called oyos oh it is do you give it some of your patients I don't use it a lot yeah but there are a lot of doctors who are experts in the area who may like it more especially in Europe not here but the thing is is it's an alternative then to an I'm not saying it's an alternative to an anti-depressant but it allows you works a lot better but it's interesting because it's like we want to feel this feeling of connection and love and that is the opposite of feeling depression right right well serotonin is the one that makes you feel like you know that's the anti-depressant but the thing is they all work together and I think what we need to understand that's so crucial is that everything works together there's no such thing as one thing all right and as you get older you need to adjust your lifestyle so that you can maintain the excitement all right the passion the interest I mean triny you're the perfect example you are more passionate today than 5 years ago 10 years ago you're more interested so you have to find your area of Interest yeah of course you think the hor yeah this is not the pills and the prescriptions this is actually what you're telling your brain you need in your life to have this life which feels full and which feels very connected and I think that is very much attitudinal I think that's the difference between you know we talk a lot amongst ourselves at triny London too about the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset always wanting to discover always being interested right always asking questions you know and I have some friends who never ask about other people's lives so they're just sharing their life so they're not learning new or seeing the experiences of other things that they bring into their experience to enrich themselves comes I think that's one of the contributors to your coming small one but going back to these hormones so about add one cortisol so let's talk cortisol because cortisol in the simplest you explain because I I always talk about C soul but just why the overproduction C Soul what it does to our body so just is the stress fight or flight right and when you're afraid and we overreact to everything and that's us we just overreact but you know a little bit of stress is great because like in the morning it's quite good to have a bit of Co course you you want it you want cortisol because cortisol keeps you alive and moving um so it's great but sometimes it's unnecessary so when it's unnecessary or it goes on at high levels over longer periods of time then it becomes dangerous and it hurts so you want to keep your cortisol l so so when you say hurt so we could talk a little bit now about inflammation of the body and cortisol is the food for inflammation of the body I would say it is you know it's given like when they give you medal dose pack or prednisone or anything that's anti-inflammatory but as a steroids or there steroids they try to bring down acute inflammation M which is great but if you had that all the time over years yeah then you start having problems you start breaking down mhm so it's like you're band-aiding a bit exactly so it's okay as a Band-Aid when something happens acely but you don't want it over a long time so the thing is that hormones will be doing their dance forever it's about what we've learned about how to change your lifestyle so that you can support your hormones yeah and as we said diet exercise exercise let's talk about exercise for one about exercise because it's it's it's let's take away from exercise the vanity Matrix let's literally look at it from perspective of strength and health support for your body you look after it it looks after you but when you see that so you have a lot of patients who come to you and if somebody doesn't versus somebody who does and they're in menopause what are the fundamental differences you'll see in that body if you don't exercise you get old you fall apart if you exercise you stay young it's how you move you could tell what a person's age is by the way they move move by the way they stand up by the way they move in life and so with hormones it'll be more difficult but still if you have muscle you're going to be okay yeah because muscle is the probably the most important organ that you have because it helps feed your brain so you don't have brain fog and it helps make hormones so it's really so important and the other thing is you know women I had a patient the other day who said to me oh I can't build muscle I mean I can't start picking up a weight because I bulk up so much and that's a different mentality which is oh you don't want to bulk up well I'm not sending you to be a bodybuilder not lifting 20 kilos one thing we can both do now and I just I haven't told Erica this and she's in a heel but we're going to both sit on the floor okay and sit on the floor however you want to and you're going to do this at home all right but this is just a one that I really like so it's just about our strength and what we do now some people can do this really well from cross-legged but it's about get up without using your hands all right you got to be very easily be able to get up without losing your hands now some I mean she's going to do it when she's 100 some people I mean this is where I want to get to I want to get to where you're like that and then you get up which I cannot do I can't get up from here this position so put your arms down no I know but I'm just saying like it's test at home for anyone's there all right so I'm going to say this to you if you are somebody who that really helps your sense of a little bit of depression and I know many women in their 50s where running is does that for them they're out but your knees might hurt a bit more or it might be very hard on your body of course what do you say to women like that CU you have so many people in New York who are Runners right so what do they do I say if you're older meaning over 45 let's say that's older to you well bloody bab to you know I'm 73 so we don't have to worry about that no but this is the thing as you get over 40 you don't want to run because you're right you're hurting your joints you want to build muscle strength that's what I was saying you want to build muscle strength and you know you also don't have to exercise every day I see people over exercising because they want to keep their shape and because menopause they think that you know you lose your waist and whatever else naturally would happen that you can actually bypass if you do the right exercise which is build some muscle and don't run the other thing is the jumping exercises which are terrible because whether you have babies or not you wind up with those things between your legs I I do this one which I do have to have a pee before I do it called the hopping bunny and it's very good because I like to release my um lymphatic system and you know like a rebounder which is the soft one but I sometimes do it on a hard floor and I do it in the morning on Instagram and I'm like this is am you do that in the morning it and I really love it then in the afternoon I sometimes feel it in my knee I have to say and I think course all right so but it's good what you say what you do in the morning everybody has to get up in the morning and move things move move it because you want the circulation back and you know what it'll create hormones I mean we're not Tak hormon let's talk about that because we always talk about hormone supplementation but physically what can we do with our bodies where we create hormones because I love that you just said that and I want to understand that more Eric how do we create hormones ourselves muscles they release hormones yeah like which ones all of them the gut makes all the hormones right yeah we forget so we forget that all the hormones are made in the gut so watch you eating gives you hormones what you're Pumping Iron without bulking up gives you hormones what you're thinking gives you hormones so yeah of course you need a hormone expert and you shouldn't go to anybody who just hangs up a shingle because today it's the in thing and you know longevity is the thing and we have shingle hangs up a shingle saying that they're hormone experts and there so many I mean if you remember 15 years ago it was me and three others that was it and now there's one on every blond but if they know what they're doing you'll be fine in three months in three months you will feel like yourself if they don't know what they're doing leave yeah because there are dime a dozen at this point and I have been to um not everyone could get to New York um Dr er Team do zooms I have to say uh but I do think that I'd never been properly diagnosed until I came to see you and for those of you who are watching for the first time I'd been to England and I'd and you were the first person who also said to me that you know you've done 160 Ms of IVF so you I I was wondering why am I getting to Perry manapa at 40 and you told me actually you don't have so many eggs as a fine item out I never knew that before and it would never stop me doing all those IVs I have Lia but it was just it was just a revelation to me when I was diagnosed correctly as opposed to somebody who didn't even blood work and gave me the mees urine whatever it's called or you could do it online and just order it so you have to really take care of yourself and care about yourself enough to make sure that what you're doing is improving things it's not just like your friend said this let's do it you know if it works it works I have people who come in and they bring like 50 things that they got from you know Instagram from anything right and from friends from everybody's taking something and you know what it's desperation and Desperation smells bad we know that but also everyone is different so you know if your friend has got her hormone reading and you do reading of so many other things because you're balancing out if that's reading that what is this reading and I think it's that whole how it comes together in blood work to see if that's high but then this is low then like with my cholesterol I remember I was worried because I was a high cholesterol reading you and yeah but that's it's the good cholesterol that it has a great reading triny and you help me interpret my health you know I want to be in control of my health I want to read you know a blood tests and sort of understand where I sit in in in Wellness because it also when you feel yeah that's and you say to me triny you're generally well that makes you think great because we can worry as well we can think we're getting into our 60s or whatever and what could be around the corner and then you have friends who are getting ill and it makes you like I want to look after it's scary yeah it's very scary and un unfortunately fear is a really horrible emotion to experience to lead you to make decisions yeah you make the wrong decisions when they're out of fear so I think the more information you get and the more support you get the more you heard Yeah the more validated you feel the more likely you are to be okay and the more informed you are so you could start if you're watching this by reading any one of Dr Erica's books but I'm going to list them all and that's how I started I read the book as well and it just gave me insight and it gave me control over my own body because you know it's there's a really there's a thing I think I felt all my life that a doctor knows best whatever doctor that is knows best and then the other extreme is you go down a rabbit hole on the internet and you go into a horror story of things so it's somewhere in the middle for sure but just reading from informed uh authors is important you want a doctor who cares and listens to you the doctor has to listen to you they have to see you as triny not you as a 50-year-old woman it they can't be in a bucket thrown into that bucket yeah because that's how we're trained that's like public health and public health is great to give you information but when you're sitting with a patient across from the patient unless you know who that patient is and understand who they are and listen to them yeah you're not going to do well by them I know some people never get to see a hormone specialist because it's beyond their budget right so on for those people who are watching I think reading is really good going to your GP so if this is in the UK or if you're on Obamacare here you know but just if you you don't have access it's just going and and maybe saying look could you do this blood work on me because I feel I'm going into par menopause or menop pause and and you know I'd like and it's just I think you get a respect of a normal practitioner if you sort of say I think I know this is going on my body and I'm quite in tune and I'd love you to just check these things for me um so I I do feel that also try and and that's why you need a relationship with the doctor um anyway it's such a joy thank you for fitting Us in and oh my God it's my pleasure catch up again soon I love [Music] you
