peace that's James 1:3 then I can't stop there because you guys sent so many scriptures that I've held on to blessed happy spiritual prosperous favor of God is to the man woman who is steadfast on the trial and preserves when tempted for when he has passed the test and has approved he will receive the victors crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love him James 1:2 so thanks again I'm so glad you joined us today it's gonna be a great career time legacy in the kitchen legacy from the kitchen whichever you'd like to use is gonna be an exciting day today with my family I've got my girls here and my granddaughter and we're just gonna demonstrate some recipes that are kind of dear to our hearts as a family and that when we have these family meals we absolutely have to have them or the meal is just incomplete so we're gonna do that today and then we're gonna have some table time of discussion and talking about what what do you do at the table whether you talk about at a table importance of table time we're gonna do all of that and we want to take your questions as well so as we do the demonstration today I want you to send your questions in and we'll try to get to as many as we can as possible okay and so in the meantime I want you to sign up as well at Lois Evans org slash legacy and there will have for you the recipes that we have today and four days of legacy from the kitch kitchen devotions from each one of us and our recipes all right well not when I asked my girls to come on camera and join me crystal cares and Priscilla Shire is the mother of three and my second our second daughter and she is an author a speaker she's been in war room and you'll see her in August and overcomers another Kendricks brothers movie so look look for that okay and that's a short bio you can always go to her ministry going beyond dot-com and find out all about her okay and then I've got Krystal Evans Hurst my her first daughter and she's the mother of five and she's homeschooled him all she's still homeschooling three yeah and she's an author of three well it'll be three books soon yeah yes she's an author of two right now but she's getting ready I think she started writing I'm trying whoa so pray for her cuz she's gonna be in some more waiting rooms as she writes express with goddess has in her heart she's also the leader of sisters circle which is having a retreat in October but I think you're full right now so it's the circle trying to squeeze a few more people yeah and has blogs and ministry and speaks all over the country all over the world so I'm a proud mom as you could tell I could go on and on about their by on what God has done in their lives but as we discuss and talk today I think you'll have a chance to hear more from them but it's crystal how do they find out about your crystal Hirst Krystal Evans Hirst calm and everywhere on special media at Crystal Hurst there you go and then last but not least my famous granddaughter yeah she is perfect that's the first grandchild for nine years so you can understand I'm going on and on a little bit maybe too much um she and her husband are entrepreneurs they owned their own photography business Barriss photos is that correct yes yes so she has been so busy doing weddings and photography and some other things that have come up in their lives recently I'm so glad you able to join us today cuz you have had a busy busy week or two you know it's still more to come caris is also bloggers so you how do they follow your blog so you can follow them at Karis Pierce calm or on instagrams Paris yes that's her roommate mom yes and I can't forget she has given me my first two great minutes and listen the first great grand is named moist Elizabeth and then my grandson is Joshua and so I'm so happy to have all of you here oh by the way Karen since I mentioned is blogging but I told her to save it all it's gonna be a book it's gonna be her first book yeah anyway so we're glad to have you all here to join me for today and we're gonna start off I think right away with a demonstration yes and I was like yes first okay that Karis got a little bit more doting than we did just now in the introduction oh yes but something so happy that you could join me it's gonna be a fun day but as I said earlier you're a fun but also informative we'd like to leave you with some good information and some good food looking at us demonstrate some good food that's kind of makes us happy as a family all right we're gonna get going I think right yeah yes and I will get off to starting the program hey I've got to thank my TOA team they're amazing you'll see how this is done we feel like we are really martha storing today and so toxic team ta thank you so much for helping us put this on today okay yeah thank you yeah okay okay so and you take so you're staying with me okay but I'll go myself okay so this is the first thing we're gonna show you is really a an easy salad but it is multi-layered and it really looks beautiful so if you're gonna have guests over or you're just cooking for your family and you want everybody to sort of be able to pick and choose different aspects thank you girl different aspects of what they want to UM of what it is that they want to kind of put on their salad or eat you can do this so this is the goal we had available today I will tell you that when I at home I usually make it in a like a longer flat bowl and then that way you can really sort of spread out all the ingredients who in a long rows so it looks really pretty but whatever a bowl of course that you have works just fine I originally got this recipe I have to tell you from the Neely's okay so do you remember the kneeling they used to have a cooking show on the Food Network and I've been making this for years so it's really not my recipe it's totally their recipe but I've made tweaks to it along the way how about that okay so romaine lettuce yes a lot of times mom I will mix in spinach because you know it's really got more nutrients yeah so you can mix in spinach if you want or some kale something like that and again when this is on in a kind of a longer Bowl yeah a flat longer bowled and you can see these rows okay and here are all the ingredients we've got cucumbers red or yellow bell peppers got red onions asparagus that we've blanched so blanching is when you let water boil and along because of course asparagus is long so you let it boil in a long saucepan with a wide saucepan and then you just put them in there for three or four minutes and then immediately put it under cool water so it's just barely soft just barely socket so that's what we did to the asparagus then of course we've got Tomatoes we have bacon if you eat bacon we've got boiled eggs and also some gorgonzola cheese okay so once you get all of your ingredients separated a little bit I guess yes Emma strip a little yep so you just sort of take it and you begin to put it in rows that's what makes this salad so great is that once you start putting it in rows and mix the colors in you really just looks well yeah you don't looks good already can i disrupt it please wrap it all yes doing that I will also tell you guys that there you go my good I also also tell you guys that are things today are sliced we slice the onions slice the red peppers the onions are still are the turn enough to mate thank ya are still whole but at home I have this manual chopper you can look it up and it saves you so much time and energy because it's one of those things that's like this then you just close it down over some vegetables and when you close it down it sort of chops it through a grate so most of the time I would have these in small little squares so it's small little squares which means it's already bite-sized pieces for people and they don't have to need they don't need a knife right they can just gather what they want okay oh yes after cheese okay a lot of times I put that or doesn't this really doesn't matter there's no specific place to put it a lot of times I'll put the cheese around the edges okay just so it can be pretty around the edges and have a little color than right right you're gonna do the eggs mom why not put them on the top not sure or in a row like it doesn't matter yeah so I put the cheese on two different sides and I'm gonna put the bacon on the opposite sides again just to make it mmm look really pretty so the joy of this salad is that when you've got it particularly in a long shallow dish um you can even use like a baking dish you know a dish you put in the oven to bake chicken in or Sarah just use that dish so that it's shallow and long and then you put everything in rows it looks really neat use what you have yeah you use what you have it's no big deal so the only other thing with this is dressing we're gonna add a recipe for homemade barbecue ranch salad dressing we're gonna have that listed for you so that you can make it it's not difficult to make just about four or five ingredients and you put them together stir it up and you have a beautiful barbecue ranch but the hack is that if you just don't feel like it then girl get yourself some ranch dressing from the grocery store get your favorite barbecue sauce put the ranch dressing squeeze it out into a bowl mix in two or three tablespoons of barbecue sauce mix it together and let it refrigerate for a little while while you're waiting for your guests to arrive or your family to wrap and I got Walla barbecue ranch yeah you got so uh gorgeous salad but a gorgeous salad yes okay thank you very much your what's this turtle let's just turn it this way in the gorgeous thank you for selling yeah thanks mom team tu a in action thank you guys Ron Briana I'm calling you out and here comes joy oh joy his hand thank you all so much for making this happen and now we're gonna go to the big macaroni and cheese right all right come on in crystal you got to help me out yeah but you know there's camera and I'm calling them all out I love you this is you because this is your recipe yeah okay great all right we're gonna start I still can't make like you can make by the week you guys keep saying that's not the same and it's just simply we as but yeah I appreciate it simple ingredients and the flip of your wrist thank you and I've mastered that on a lot of things but not on not on this I receive it it's probably your love just remote yes there you go so a team to a already took care of boiling my noodles for me and Joey I just set this aside to cool and put some olive oil or any kind of oil in it just to keep it separate okay I'm sticking stick thank you keep it from sticking and you set this aside and wait until you do your mixture now I'm gonna go to the store guys is that okay turn my back on the cameras all right and we're gonna start doing the mixture all right oh so we can see it you're doing it sorry anything I know no I didn't check the see how to turn the stove on that's gonna be funny okay that's the funny part okay is it on yep great and we start by melting the butter and Joanie I use four of these okay typical is it for your own yes it's learned it for your now it's all buttery today this is not count we don't come count no we do not know we get together as a family we just load it up so we put the butter in and I'm not gonna wait for things to all melt and things like that because um you know we're just doing a demo kitchen today we're gonna let the butter go then Kristen you could bring some things for me okay let me think the milk yep and follow the recipe I only have two cans today to demonstrate but I joined I think the recipe says four and you ready to use three okay four cups of noodles and three pet milk for some reason my sister-in-law told me years ago pet nut is the secret because I used to use carnation but she said no PFDs pet no so you have to find a pet milk can use pet milk and again the rest of you tells you what to do alright and how much and then I just have this butter and pet nook melting and while that's happening for some crystal I use the mustard and I use a whole pot spoon of mustard what's a pot spoon everybody wants to know oh yes well use that one it's bigger one it is double this size yeah okay got it and you lay it on there and I learned this from a trip I took a trip to the Bahamas one time and was eating their mac and cheese and Ahmet and she's almost like cake and I just asked the lady what do you have in your mac and cheese that mix it's so tasty and has it tasting like take a cake texture and she gave the see when she said she just put some mustard in there so nothing original so I put mustard and then everything is melting they use a paper towel just don't please yeah but the burner on high or medium or it looks like it's not hi do you need to come down a little bit no hi for now bye for now and then we'll turn it down and you know your soul so you might have to do it some medium you don't want to burn anything you don't want to burn your mixture at all so you start dumping your cheese in and I generally on the recipe pass cheddar sharp cheddar has mozzarella just cheese like full packages you know and then I've got the secret little cube right there the magic cube and this is something you could find any grocery store it's just like a bouillon cube okay and you just put that bouillon cube in there let me see I need a knife I think that's fun break it on I'm breaking it up with my finger okay and then I was just noting the sauce anyway so if you don't break it up all the way that's fine it'll just melt in the sauce there you go of course if you put this back on the tray for me and you just keep stirring and Christie y'all have you I think you just did turn it up that's good so you put the magic in let me see a little bit of seasonal a little bit and you have to taste and I'll show you how I taste when I'm cooking it off camera we can just be real today okay but season all and just keep stirring and a little dash of garlic pilots garlic powder yes no more salt because you hopefully boiled your noodles with a little bit of salt so you don't keep adding too much salt and you've got a taste I don't have I don't follow recipes exactly like they're looking written in books you know I kind of add my flavor so keep adding what your family enjoys what you enjoy whatever taste that might be and um and make up your own recipe that's pretty much what I do I start maybe with a cookbook recipe and then mmm it's not the taste I want and I keep adding what I would like and what I know my family likes okay so just keep in mind when you're cooking you're building memories for your family you want that every meal right I know putting pressure on you here but almost every meal you want your family to really see that's pretty good mom yeah and then you runs the kitchen so I remember what in the world did I do write it down okay and then we that obvious thing I say right all right and then Cheez Whiz this is something I added recently that I didn't tell you guys last Christmas saying we knew it was different oh it was so great it was just different all right watch it watch it was it was great it was great and then I had Cheez Whiz and again - plops see again no measurements - plops of Cheez Whiz and this is the size how is that and what you again hold on to this to me you keep tasting and you might want to add some more cheese with our support cheese and so this is the way I taste and my fingers got too much stuff in it so what are you going to taste let's see how it's going okay great okay and then turn it down for me because we're gonna go now and work in the noodles for a little bit then we'll come back and put the sauce over the noodles and put it in the oven that's pretty much it and then exciting you can get this done real quick before the kids come for school or while the kids are doing homework or no then Christmas holidays anything any time there's a good time for this person yes yes and you you might want to keep stirring and I'll flip back over here to the noodles now we're back to the noodles that were soaking in olive oil and that's soaking ople that's that's an overstatement just a little bit olive oil was on it or oil just to keep the noodles from sticking okay so not a lot over and then I just whisk an egg if I could do this live stuff and I'll tell you what and just pour the egg over the noodles and I'm just gonna show you what I do at home but for a live event I will do the spoon Letta listen when I'm in my kitchen at home I wash my hands first but then I just dig right in okay and make sure I get that egg in there and the egg is not on top or around this you want it all in there okay and then I'm gonna take these noodles over to the stove we're gonna pour some sauce on it and put it in my baking dish and we ready to go I think that's all ingredients your baking dish you can spray the pan coz you've got enough butter in there keep things from sticking okay all right let me go back to the kitchen where Krista to the stove and we're gonna pour some sauce for the sauce in here and then I'm gonna stir and we'll decide when we stop pouring sauce that stuff stop for now dip a lot of hand motion today and I'll use the spoon okay and I'll stir it in then you go back over here I'm stirring it in because you don't want it to be true runny but you want there to be some movements between the noodles you really do okay and I'm gonna come back and get some more sauce crystal okay get me to bring it there okay great pour some more sauce that's good let me just see and again I don't have a way of telling you how much sauce to pour don't do measurements very well but a little bit more just a little there you go and you know yeah and what's left back just let it cool in a ziploc bag and save it for the next meal mmm just surprise your family with another little dish just be creative you spaghetti noodles any kind of noodle and just put that cheese sauce on it and there you go and do some salmon and some green vegetables and I think your kids will be excited that we have cheese noodles tonight can we be excited today right now yes they're for me all right and then oops making a mess we put it in the baking dish just got some Pam in the bottom of it another good mmm and then we're gonna put in you gonna help me put in the oven yeah all right look at that I'll wash my hands you do the oven thing over here I think we're gonna use which one yes all right all right there we go okay and voila of live TV mm-hmm this is the finished product so you can get the recipe right okay as she digs in which way that which usually happens at home see you can get the recipe from luis evans org slash legacy you can get it now I think it's up now all right and that's it and I think there we go this is what happens at home this is normal I come back after finish cooking and they're dirty holes in my dish holes my husband tasting just let me know if it's wonderful right and by the time you get to dinner there's enough love for dinner okay thank you so much I think that's it awesome thank you Lesley it may be now if you're watching you do it I can do it okay great sous chef see how easy it is isn't it it is easy crystal you're on oh that was my dry roasted potatoes yes so I had to I had to actually cook this Kerris to write down the recipe because but this is like a staple right I taught you all to make it and is there really a recipe I don't eat nah do something different every time every time though because we're extra we have all the possible things you could put on the potato at one time but if all you do is get some salt and pepper these will be great so let me let's just just put you at ease so first of all they're soaking in water I cut up the potatoes and I soaked them in water because if you do that and you can even soak them overnight it'll help the potatoes to be crispy on the inside and on the outside and chewy on the inside so you can do this the day before which will save you some time and then you just take this and I'm going to do this over the sink right here all right do this over the sink just drain the potatoes okay and you'll also notice when you do that that there's all this extra white stuff in the bowl so that soaking it also helps to get rid of the starch you can do this in a pan like this or a baking dish or you can do it if there's a little water on it left on it so okay or you can just put it straight like on a baking dish like a pan that you'd make cookies on it doesn't matter now like what mother said there's the rules that are on the recipe thing and then there's just what you do so I'm gonna estimate somebody say estimate we're going to estimate about for this amount of potatoes the recipe is for five pounds this is probably half of that so I'm gonna estimate on this about mmm quarter cup of oil but you want it to you want your fingers to be oily when you mix it up so then what we have here is some cumin just dump this is some chili pepper so if you've got little kids maybe you don't dump a lot but chili goes a long way to adding flavor paprika and I have no other reason for this other than is red and it just gives just it gives a little color did you come up with this recipe you know why it's somewhere no no I I learned how to make roasted potatoes and I just started trying stuff this is time and any time you have the opportunity to use fresh what is this an herb fresh herbs oh my gosh it takes the level up to a whole nother level so if you want to be extra you know go to a fresh market and then get some fresh things but if you don't have all this it's fine so that's some thyme dill try that what are your favorite seasonings to put on that's just something no I usually use spike you can find it at like browse or I actually part it with sometimes it yeah if you like an all-in-one seasoning it's like a seasoned all but like but extra yeah the ingredients are like a little you know yes and if you put that on there that's really all you need yeah this has oregano and again I made this the other day with all of this and it was great this dried onion you can use dried onion or real onion if you want to kind of have that potato and onion thing going on but we'll use dried onion today then it look pretty I mean this already so far you know it just looks pretty that looks better than my usual I'm telling I can just because I'm your mother anyway this is garlic powder or you can add extra onion powder either one I'm just gonna actually take a pitch because when the people do cooking shows that's what they do you know they put it get a pinch of it so I just want to be a little extra this black pepper because you do need pepper I think it does look good and then this is funny maybe we have a thing for mustard in our family this is a dried mustard it just what does it add it sets it off it just sets it off set it off okay so there's some dry mustard now here's the fun part I did wash my hands before we got started so I'm gonna do what my other wasn't gonna do cuz this is how you do it I mean you don't really know until it's mixed unless your hands are on it your hands have to be on it and Rachael Ray is to say you just gotta put a little eat eat what is it yeah the Evo Evo Evo something extra yeah all that y'all know what with me and then you just stir it up there's something about putting your hands on your food when they're clean which whatever lame so here we have these and I'm gonna wash my hands and then all you do is put it in the oven and I'm gonna throw it in there yep throw it in there for me yep down on the bottom that's it and then the finished product looks like this cuz we cook really fast around here so this is actually this is still warm actually made this this morning and I know and it's so good I already tasted it I had a problem getting it out the door now depending on what seasonings you put on it you know it may look like this it may not it may look more like a potato than a you know but I just dumped everything on there and it's good yeah and then I'm like my mom was saying you just experiment you try some stuff decide what you like and you don't like and then figure out what works for your family yeah for my kids usually I just do this on pepper and spike and they love it with ketchup the killings and that just makes it easy and fast if you're in a crunch for time 100% so that's roasted potatoes so we're gonna make a pesto chicken penne is it penny is actually the pin opening okay penne pasta and so it's really nice can I just ask you question first I'm gonna act as your interview how old are you I'm 27 okay so 27 years old I just want to say that here's eight are you annoying you yeah so here's a millennial she cooks meaning I think sometimes our generations young you know the younger younger you get the quicker everything is fast food hurry up frozen food and you do that - it's nothing you can guess every night but I'm saying it's great to have in your arsenal some things but if you didn't have you know a mom or grandmother that taught you those things make it your business to like get five things under your belt you know six things under your belt those potatoes are like yeah then you're about to make if it's good it feels good doesn't it yeah I can make your family oh definitely for sure I love this meal it's super it takes about 30 minutes to make it's a one-pot meal I make it a lot for friends who just had babies or like to give to people because it's really healthy but it's good so the first thing that you're gonna do is you're gonna boil your pasta and we have it already boiled make sure it's a boy your pasta with salt - just give it a little extra flavor while that's boiling you'll go ahead and cut up your vegetables which would just be the tomatoes and the onions and when those are cut up we're gonna move over here and cook our chicken so we can turn this on let's see we can get it on that one that one's on its up yeah there we go okay perfect so what you'll do is you will take your olive oil which one is olive oil they're both out one so you'll take your olive oil and then we'll go back over here and grab our salt and pepper you know which ones olive oil by looking at it yes elbow is just a little thicker I mean I mean yes yes I do and so we'll just cook one chicken but for this recipe you'll make it out to you and so we'll just add some salt and pepper I'm gonna put it in my hand just saw it on over Wow it's all coming out yes well it's coming out you do you see some all the time over just regular it just depends if I have it if I have it in my pantry if I prefer where is it to pick it up from the grocery store then yes I prefer to use it and you can also add a little bit of pepper to this but you're really just gonna season it kind of lightly because you know all of your flavor will come from your other ingredients so that will cook mm-hmm that will cook down and so while that is cooking and what we'll do is we'll start in our other pan so you'll probably need two pans for this one to click your chicken and then the other pans to get the rest of your ingredients going or if you want to do it all in one that you can totally do that as well and just depends on if you're in a crunch for time oh oh oh either that one which is good actually yes okay sorry we're trying to get everything to Ellen here politics are going alright do we have butter that's okay we'll just pretend like we have better yeah great all right so while that's cooking the easiest thing to do it you're gonna add your butter and onion to this pan and so we don't have butter right now so we use olive oil yeah so we'll use a little bit of olive oil let's be clear butter makes everything better butter makes everything but olive oil you know is a is a good choice as well and so when you put your onions in you're really just gonna let them what is what is there's a special word for it but basically you wait until they're see-through and that's how you know when they're really ready and then so we'll let that sit and so while all this is sitting usually I try to involve Ellie so I'll just have her come and stand and watch the chicken or move it around the pan with the forks that she feels like she's doing something something special and so as this is going and with the onions and the butter what you will also add is either white wine or chicken broth if you have it and so why do you have a preference over white wine then I usually use chicken broth because I have I don't usually keep white wine in the pantry and the recipe will tell you exactly how much but you can just use a little bit I believe it's a couple tablespoons and and then again we'll wait until this I think you turn it off oh nope it's on there we go perfect so we'll just stir this while it's going yeah we'll watch the chickens I think the smell of onion and butter sauteing is my one of my favorite smells ever yes between that and bacon yes absolutely I'm good and sometimes what I like to do for chicken because that's what picking a whole chicken breast can be hard because you don't want to like to burn the outside but you want to make sure this so I usually will kind of cut it almost in half but laying it flat and so just make the whole chicken itself just a little bit skinnier and it cooks a little faster and then on the backend it's easier to dice up so we're cooking this we're waiting until it's translucent that was the word ass so were translucent you're so smart you might have a great knife and so we're just gonna pretend like this is translucent yeah it's getting there yeah yep and then what you'll also do is you'll add two tablespoons of heavy whipping cream so that's one and two great and then we'll keep working on this for a little while okay so our chicken is cooked we're gonna pretend that it's totally done and so what you'll do with the chicken is you will dice it up and because we have awesome people it is already diced here we go and so once this is translucent and ready to go we're gonna just add our chicken YUM I've never made this I'm gonna make sure it's so good it is so good and it definitely pretty healthy - the market will be better and yeah having you know but you could be on vegetables in there you could um you could use gluten-free pasta which again rate or one wheat pasta which our house is yes yeah I use gluten-free pasta all the time now just because my boys really can't tell the difference they made some really good pasta they can't tell so any time I can just do something they can't figure out yes that I'm doing it's like why not I'm not gonna lie I have tried to trick my husband a few times was like food with like noodles that are like black bean noodles yeah and a regular and you know every time yeah honestly what I do is I will will look make some like regular noodles forget and just add it in okay so we're gonna do we're just gonna dump the tomatoes in here and then we're gonna dump some spinach and this is where it becomes really quick and easy really pretty too yes absolutely and then you'll take your pesto pasta and you'll dump some in there as well okay so then you get the green mixing whip and heavy whipping cream and yeah that's where you get your absolutely and so you'll mix all of this up really well can you mix this stuff yeah I grabbed this I'll do it perfect and you'll just dump pasta in so you need a really big song yeah for this for the end you need a big saucepan yeah okay of you and so usually I will do it all in one pan cook the chicken in the same pan just because I want to do it in the pot like that you could you could you could absolutely do that and just because I host doing dishes usually I'm just like we're gonna do this in one pan order to okay work and so that's really it um after you're done with it you all go ahead and pot or plate it excuse me and then add a little bit of parmesan on top oh yeah to make it good and so we'll have that in here whoo yes okay perfect and that is it whew it's very very Harris I like it very much so you know okay let's see yep there you go so super yummy super good super fast and it's a really good meal to cook for other people okay oh great here it is so here's the final result oh is that this is the final perfect but it's so good I don't have a so easy so quick not super like unhealthy but usually for the kids I'll give them this and just make them like a little tiny salad or I'll add broccoli just for some extra green but it really can be eaten on its own your Amit you're perfect okay so yep me so I must be doing rock pot ribs let me tell you how to change your life listen get a life huh you have to have a prop pot so I have three teenage sons and I have to feed like an army so between my husband and the three boys it's the army to feed and a crock-pot will change your life on busy days when you can't sit over the stove and so you need to get something done in the morning crock-pot ribs are really easy so I will tell you that I don't particularly care to touch Rob raw meat I normally have just those little gloves you can buy so understand that you can do that as well okay so I normally use two racks of ribs for our purposes today I just got one some spare ribs this is so easy have you done this before did you get this recipe for me did you give it to me did you give it for me and then I took it from you I think so I think that's what happened I mean it's been like years and years and you attentively okay so anyway my oldest why would we work harder why if this works for me please bless your family with it too yes and this is the kind of meal that's better the second and third day because it just sits in a situation okay so I clean off the ribs that's important y'all clean your meat off okay so get each rack and clean up you mean I'm not supposed to just get it from the store tear the plastic off and throw it in there somebody doesn't know somebody doesn't know we gotta get you free all you gotta clean your meat okay and you cut it in half so that it will fit in your crock pot so you might have a smaller one like this and my situation comes with a big man that I'm meeting mine's just a little bit bigger and when you cut it in half you you need to feel free after you wash it and dry up with some paper towels then you can sort of have your rack your half rack stacked on each other don't feel like they all have to be flat on the bottom of the crock pot and so while they're still sitting out now I would have halves I will take meat tenderizer so it kind of looks like salt basically and you do this on on both sides so on each side of it and I'm just gonna do it quickly for our purposes right now you just season both sides with meat tenderizer with salt and you get the pepper going Chrissy salt and pepper and salts are pretty good you know you want to make sure that it's covered and it looks well-seasoned and then you literally take the two halves because you will have cut your halves or two racks of ribs if you have room for that in your crock pot and you layer it just like this on the inside of your crock pot and then you take onion we love onion in art well I love onion in my family my boys aren't nuts about it and most of the time I'll have it sliced in pretty big slices because again when it's in the crock pot for a long time it really sort of diminishes the size so if you want to do dice you can if people don't like onion that much in your family or you can do the other other ways and I don't have it's not cut in half right now bolder than ham yeah it'll be cut in half you put it inside you put all of your onion inside and you literally set this on low for about four hours set it on low for four hours the last hour maybe that fifth hour you take your barbecue sauce for the last hour you pour it all I usually use the whole bottle cuz I have two racks of ribs yes so don't be afraid to use the whole bottle evil on even on one rack of ribs your family your friends your co-workers your neighbors will think you have hung they will think you about you they think you rented it and it took you seven and a half minutes yet to put it in the crock-pot and then you walked away like this yep and pretended like you were somebody yep and so you leave it in there for another hour on low you'll know when ribs are done when you see them on the ends kind of start to pull away from the bone so they sort of you drink and they pull away from the bone that's when you know they're pretty much they're pretty much cook everybody to my max I'm just saying I just learned something you call it curled s I never knew that so see they pulled away from the bones just a little bit worse the spin I just had I lost it okay anyway but anyway those are the ribs I just made those this morning there they are right there you got the onions the sauce and I mean for real y'all I think I'm gonna feed some to my I'm gonna feed you a little wave what the pork its pork are you're not eating pork right now in your life this one doesn't Evans money I ain't bacon I just don't eat pork oh yeah this is my child yeah so the meat chicken or beef - you can do this with beef ribs chicken chicken breasts really anything just throw the meat in there put some barbecue sauce on it some seasoning and walk away you don't have to add water or anything to the crock pot because the meats gonna make its own water leave it there for more than five hours add the sauce in the last hour and I'm telling you your family will rise up and call go ahead and lick your fingers that's how you know glory glory say lot but you know make it do you remember you got it when I was little you taught me how to work the oven and to bake my own hot fries with pot pies in the oven at like 5:00 but you might like the banquet that you get absolutely I love pot pies probably because of that yes because as a single parent I was just trying to make sure you didn't go hungry I wasn't trying to be I'm trying to do all of this but I also this is pretty quick and easy oh yeah very clean yeah I don't want someone shows me how to do this I was like oh this is this is much better and it's a great alternative to the freezer pop hot you shouldn't do if you can avoid that no I have not do this instead okay so we have two chicken breasts now let me just say this first of all this recipe is one of three things I usually make after making a whole chicken so we're not gonna show you how to make a whole chicken but even if you buy a whole chicken from the store by the time you take some meat off for chicken potpie some meat off for chicken salad take the bones put them in a crock pot with onions and celery to make your own chicken broth and then maybe chicken tortilla soup out of that you got three meals out of one chicken make it chicken by a chicken this is one of three things you can do and if you have a daughter make her debone the chicken or son or a husband yeah anyone just get all the meat off so anyway let's pretend that we have this meat from a chicken but you can also cook chicken for it and y'all in a pinch canned chicken will do somebody bless your neighbor and say okay so make it easy so basically you just want to mix up in a bowl thank you you want to mix up in a bowl this is classic Oh roasted garlic Alfredo you can use any kind of Alfredo I happen to like this one the best so you dump it and then it never actually gets out all of it so you put a little bit of water a tttt bit cause you don't want your next too much because you don't want your sauce to be watery just a little bit to get the rest of that out of there okay because you know food cuts too much money to be wasting it then you take some frozen peas and carrots if they're frozen you don't have to defrost them out of the freezer and just dump them in here okay and you can get creative with that too whatever you want to put in old potatoes like these roasted potatoes that we have here if I get blessed to take some of these home with me they will probably be repurposed it's a green tuna a chicken pot it's a great dump yes this again y'all time is this my favorite just my favorite I actually buy it in bulk I keep it in the freezer the little refrigerator drawer in my refrigerator and I just finish off anything vegetables meat anything potatoes with a little bit of thyme what what don't you buy in bulk though you know what question you know what the yellow Costco is my friends so then we have salt and pepper you know to taste salt and pepper okay and then you take your chicken and you just dump it in the bowl now you can take the chicken it's fork when it's freshly made and you can just take a fork and just kind of mix it up for the sake of this I'm just gonna kind of leave it like that but you just mix it all together now if you want to be Betty Crocker and make your own pie crust you go right on ahead don't do that that would defeat the purpose of the quickness but I'm saying something ideal you know yes semi-homemade listen bless yourself and do whatever works for you but again in a pinch in a pinch you can take and the thing is so you just take one of the pie crusts and you lay it on the inside of your dish and just a pie dish will do okay and then you take your fillings your seasoned fillings dump it in there and this is a great make-ahead dish too often people say you know how do you do it all first things I don't do it all but when I do do what I do I do make it easy so this is something I can throw together in the morning before I get on a plane or have a meeting or whatever and put it in uncooked I put foil on top of it with instructions for how to heat it up and my family can do it and it doesn't take long to put together this is cooperating that's coming now all right so then here's your top oh that's okay we're gonna make it work there we go we're just gonna pretend this is laying the way and usually at home like pipe rack it doesn't really usually kind of break apart like dinner but if it does you can lay it out and kind of squish it up together I got a knife and cut it like you meant to to make it look like a lattice everybody will think you are so here's the fun part take your fingers and just you go around the edge and you just squinch the edges make it how that makes it look like you did it for real so so you put me go around and you squint your edges okay and so you start giving it that that homemade look then I take a fork and I just punch holes in it or whatever you've got a knife just punch holes in it cuz it'll start looking like oh you really made then here's the fun thing right at the end you take this egg now I'm about to show you also somebody who doesn't know how to get an egg white out of an egg you don't have to buy egg whites you don't have to do that you don't have to ruin your budget take an egg crack it okay and I'm gonna get the egg white out of here so the key is just to keep the yolk going back and forth between the shells you just kind of do this little dance and eventually you'll get rid of all the white okay so then we have that you stir in the a square this is called an egg wash you stir in the egg in the water take a brush and you just brush the edges and the top of the pie what this does is it makes it brown so then it makes it look like oh you did it for real and then here is the one I made this morning so basically okay so there you go chicken pot pie and your family will think you are though yes it's the lid comes next what comes next I think is cookies next so these cookies are called million dollar chocolate chip cookies they're amazing because they don't only have chocolate chips in them they have great in Hershey bar so it just makes it extra chocolaty extra good just elevates it yes yeah so the cookie recipe that you'll that you'll get online has like all these steps and all these ingredients which is great but the rule I usually live by when making cookies is put the dry ingredients together and then add all the wet ingredients so it just makes it easy to add everything and you can get all of this stuff with lloyd-evans org slash legacy right now yeah all the recipes and some devotions from you yes yes yes great so all right so first we're gonna add the flour and if you're trying to be healthy which I don't know why you would try to be healthy if you're making cookies but you can use whole wheat flour this is just regular white flour the trick with the oatmeal is that where you're going to blend it so you will blend the oatmeal so really what it what blending the oatmeal does is it makes the cookies chewy without actually having the whole oatmeal so we'll add this dry ingredients we'll add our brown sugar and our white sugar good mommy to whisk you there we go yes please and then we'll add our baking soda our baking powder and then the salt do not forget the salt I don't know why salt is so important but when you forget the shot I'd like you to listen the whole thing yes yes you can and so if you have a mixer you can make it in the mixer it makes a little bit if you have a mixer you can make it in the mixer and it goes a little bit faster that way but not you don't even use a mixer for very little use your hands yeah yep so then to the eggs we'll add the wet ingredients so really that is just the vanilla and then you'll cream the eggs together thank you with the butter really yep and so you usually cream that until it's nice and like fluffy and eerily distributed great and so and yeah that's written like this good enough and so then we'll go ahead and add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients then we'll mix this up really well and you should kind of get the consistency of cookie dough kind of like this here don't get too you know it doesn't have to be perfect yeah cookies they'll be helping you do with this you know for things with a lot of ingredients I tried not to involve her because it will all end up on the floor or in her stomach she she will eat it until it's gone okay so after this is mixed up to a pretty good consistency and like my mom said like feel free to use your hands yeah they really get in there and mash things up so once that's mixed up you'll add your graded her.she and there's nothing like fancy to this she'll just buy a Hershey bar from the grocery store and then just grade it up with a cheese grater look as much as possible you will add your chocolate chips semi-sweet chocolate chips I usually use nest Nestle Tollhouse yep and so you'll mix that up and you will end up with this you're kicking out Wow this secret to these cookies they are not like big like those big long honking cookies they're really small when you want to put them on the baking sheet so it's just about like kind of a spoonfuls worth is what you're getting a small spoonful worth yeah and so you'll mash it together you grease the pan with grease pan and with pan yes and usually they use parchment paper as well and the original recipe be fairly worn the original recipe for these cookies makes roughly a million cookies so I usually like half it or even third it or even fourth it if I'm just making it for our family so just be warned the recipe that you'll get makes yes and so you'll want to really reduce that number and so they'll be about this big and then let's crab the finished product well magic yes magic so here they are they're so so good and they're really chocolaty and really chewy and they last Rolland to the next week because that oatmeal that keeps them nice and shoot me take you back a little bit dude yes spray pan first and then the parchment paper parchment then Pam I drew it up then cookie to make sure they come off excellent excellent yep Wow thank you very much you can bite into one I guess if you want to I don't need you I don't need to you yes on my oath and he still is coming to bite into one no okay to help me stand by as you tell one of our favorite family Rhett and it's so crazy that this is one of our favorite because it's so so but we can't wait for you to make this but I'm so glad that it's simple and quick you know and this a little story behind it I got this recipe when we were in seminary Dallas Theological Seminary the Y's got together every Thursday and we get together for spiritual upliftment and but we also would share recipes they were like 25 yeah yeah probably younger than that yeah and it all shared recipes that we could afford because all of us were poor only wanted things that were tasty and so I got this from set one day seminary wife something is very simple that I could afford because it's cake mix you have your recipes go to Lois Evans org slash legacy it's just cake mix and as you see two eggs water oil and cherry pie filling that's it okay mom when you say cake mix do you literally my a box that says cake mix yeah little kids this particular cake mix in us on the recipe it's on the replica I'm drawing a blank right now okay but it's written down so they can cook like in here somebody asked you that yeah look yellow cakes yonder okay it's yellow cake mix okay and you open the package like you see right here and well can you get the bowl Wow okay great wait a minute there we go there we go this is not my mother's mixer my mom would do this by hand at home with a spoon let me just do it my way all right yes so we start with the mixture over here okay and you want to with some eggs up for me yes how quick it is so I'm gonna let you or any dinner okay all right when I the Christmas dinner any dinner I do this while they're finishing up dinner so let me finish dinner it's nice and warm and we do what I can when we're ice cream and put cherry on top because it's just six like 20 minutes to get this over with so you would which is what I love with the eggs up poured a half water in half a cup of water yes okay half a cup of oil okay oh that's I think yes it is the oil oh here's a restaurant here again thank you team to you a oh my goodness she's suspense hassle and then get that and then you pour it in here for some and fold it in or whisk it in however you'd like hi Joey again you know me the fork or spoon or whatever listen Oh mom was good I just have to ask you while I'm stirring this yes one year I went on Amazon I ordered you a hand mixer where you just click the button and the little things over and it showed up at your house and then I came over and you were still like this over the bowl using your spoon in your mouth why mother this is not not like to use electric mixer and then I looked at you and asked I said somebody sent me yeah you were about to give it away it was my mother's giveaway pile and I said mom that's the mixer mixer I just bought for you she said oh I'm sorry because I don't know it's it just feels different yeah what did I get yeah just one here's what you'd like yes I use Pamela just Pam you couldn't uh your dish down below I'll maybe just a little then you pick you get some chlorine just pour it doesn't have to be in any order just fill the bottom and then we'll stretch it out when you're done yeah and it's the quickest thing again this pan might be a little big for a happy girl we have but usually yeah and scrape it all and then give the ball to your kids the kids like to sit in the kitchen you you guys this sit in the kitchen just lick the rest of it you know sometimes I didn't leave enough leftovers and they weren't happy now they need be left enough leftovers in the pan what it's just a fun family thing to do that's good Priscilla okay and then I'm gonna so is it supposed to be shallow mom it's not supposed to be filled of it does it rise as its vaporizes and as it's big so don't worry about it okay a normal sized baking pan will work and then you just lump the cherry pie filling on top it's literally cherry pie filling don't start in just lump it on top it's the best we've been doing this I remember this from when I was like six and seven eight years old that's and every Christmas or whenever our family's together we're still looking at my mom like where's the cherry Costello but your friend that still comes in okay so my friend is I wonder if she's watching we went to high school together Ayesha cleaver and I yeah and that was her maiden name finger Ayesha started coming over on Christmas Day around 7:00 p.m. for the past I think this year was the 22nd year for 22 years about 7 p.m. every Christmas day she shows up just about the time she knows my mother is gonna be pulling the cherry cake out of the oven yes yes there it is there is this is the size pan you use yeah and you see it rises and it's ready to go and we had it in a warmer here at the Tony Evans training center and it kind of looks like a nice peeling edges and there we go help yourself and don't forget the ice cream in Texas who use the blueberry ice cream but you use what you need a whipped cream right sometimes my family members just ice cream whipped cream and the cherry on top yeah we do it all the whole situation just as it thank you so much for joining us today for a demonstration again Louis Evans org slash legacy now we're gonna go to the table and we're gonna answer some questions that you sent in and have a discussion with the family all right thank you so much this stage stay tuned stay tuned stay tuned oh that's the way it will go anywhere it's gonna move to another location [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and that's because my grandmother was so formal and my mom was formal and when we had guests this is the way we set our table and sometimes we didn't have guests but mom and grandma I just showed me how to set the table with the spoon here in the knife and I just I had to turn it the right way and they had to be the right measurement here and a fork for dinner and for salad to eat from the what the left out right and then there was a spoon up front for coffee and a little for for the dessert and this is kind of the way I grew up then there was a sound plate in a bowl but I married their daddy and that we start a church I would have guests over every Sunday and this is what i did i had dishes everywhere and tony one day looked at me because of course I had to wash the dishes after we're exhausted no this is just the way I grew up you know when it comes to sauce it comes to special dinners this is what you do you know and but Tony looked at me one Sunday when he saw a kid we're having more children and the church was growing he said boys you really don't have to do all these dishes I think I think your people are a little concerned because they don't know what this to use so I backed up and backtrack but I just wanted to show you a little bit of legacy of how my grandma and mom instilled in me when you're having guests you do it all the way to the top and even when we're having dinner as kids we still laid the table so I'm saying I know you got busy lies everybody has busy lives and it's too much too many things happening but as much as you can maybe twice a week or something I have your kids help you lay a formal table and just have a special meal minutes once a week I'll be back up because I know how busy everyone is and then but maybe twice a week you you still lay the table but but maybe with less you know maybe just the fork not the spool on the top but and the nice dishes that you have at home whatever you have I'm know shopping whatever you have just so that they have another experience as they're growing up what about yours okay so I would like to say that of the bunch of us yes I am the most Willacy it's very clear the older we all get that I'm very Lois II okay so all that she just described about her grandmother which would be my great-grandmother yeah and then her mother whose grandma to me and then mom all of that I kind of got now I also want to to preface what I'm about to say by saying I have three teenage sons so they are just now getting to the place where I'm able to enjoy a little bit more of the lowest eNOS that I have because we we have eaten on plastic plastic ware plastic bowls that's what I've done but even with the plastic that I've had I mean we still have the bowl same same plates for 10 years that I bought you know I don't know somewhere at Target or Walmart they're plastic and blue and green and whatever I still send to the boys when we had dinner set the table they still do that now they set the table they put a fork they put a knife they put a paper towel under the knife they know that they know the cup goes on the right side and they put the plastic plate down I'm so I'm just sort of graduating now to some Pottery Barn plates some Christmas crisp white plates like this and every now and then we'll you know we eat on paper plates because it's one of those nights but like my mom said I really do still feel like no I actually want my sons not just daughters my sons to know how to set the table and they go get the stuff they put it on the table and they know where the forks in the knives go um but I also do have China so that's like this sort of China flatware that mirrors my mom is sitting in front of me because I have China I haven't had a dining room table to be able to really use my China but now for the first time in my life I do so I do pull the China out when our family comes over I set the table with the two forks I've got the flatware I got for my wedding 20 years ago I put it out I put a coffee mug out with it I'm just loading I'm just very low as some grandma's stuff I got some grandma so grandma knowing that I was Louis II grandma gave me her silverware and so I have her flatware with her initial on the bottom of c-4 cannons and I use that when all the ladies and our family come over around the dining room table I use it as much as I can and I will say this really quickly before passing it on to crystal that someone said to me Rhoda actually I bet road is watching Rhoda Gonzalez who has have been a friend of our family since I was in high school Rhoda said to me one time right when my family was starting she said Priscilla don't wait until there's a special guest to use your China Wow your family are special guests yes they are special so so use it don't just have it in a cabinet somewhere where you never use it so my little white Pottery Barn plates yeah I say boys get those actual plates we're gonna use those for our actual dinner we don't have to wait for guests to actually use real forks and knives anyway I get Louis II all at the same time but I'm a mom of teenage boys so I'm practical about that it's good before Christmas starts Paula said you're sending your questions and we appreciate it Paula said this is better than watching the Food Network show well I think that what I have in my cabinet at home is a set of dishes that I bought when my husband and I first got married because I just wanted a set of solid dishes but they were everyday dishes and they have not broken they're white with a little blue rim and we think you got it from my cratenbarrel our target probably dealers because that's where we were registered and we got married and I think I used some credit from some things to get it but that said I like white too so but IKEA is cheap yeah so I go to Ikea and get all the white stuff and then when it breaks I'm not upset I'm looking at the wrong camera thank you that said I often have the decision to make when it relates to using paper plates paper goods Red Solo cups if I want to save the planet or save my sanity and that's not vote for sanity yeah my kids since she was in the sixth grade they've been at home so three meals a day having to do dishes for three meals a day just too much it was too much yeah so when we I would say we probably sit down at the table like family all of the family eating the table probably four days a week with football and actually and I would say two of those we use real stuff not China real stuff and two of those we use paper Dixie cheynet bought and bulk at Costco and then I'm with you I'm like I like them to know how to lay a table yeah not just a lay it but when we're done to clean it up somebody say glory boys so so we do do that but I have tended to use the things that I'm not afraid for them to breathe yeah yeah so to your point about using your China I have actually used China for other things like not special occasions but when I have girlfriends over or adults over yeah because I remember when we were growing up and we would wash dishes you actually for a long time did not let us wash your China yeah because it is expensive and you do want it to last and all these kinds of things so I'm kind of still doing that and I pull it out but pull it out for adult use so that way when the kids drop the plate which they will I'm alright I am on the polar opposite in the spectrum I'm at the end of the table ah this is my China [Applause] so I a lot of times find this kind of thing at IKEA which is great really cheap really cute fun kids stuff as well as like Target has really good step to Amazon as well I personally really do like getting the cart compartmentalized little plates because I have a drama queen who doesn't like her food to touch and so this kind of helps with that just so that I don't have to hear her mouth about it and so that that's great for that I do have nice China too a lot of times I will pull it out for Josh sometimes I find myself like making one meal that's kind of kid-friendly and then one meal that's kind of for Josh right that's kind of Rajesh and so I have nice China which I use for my girlfriend's when they come over or like if I'm making a really nice meal for Josh but then for regular nights I have plates that look really similar to just a white plate but they're from Ikea and they're not breakable and so they're really good cuz they look really nice but then you know if one day I want Elly and she drops it I'm not furious so that's really good for that and so yeah you said to me recently that a lot of your friends that are in their 20s they are not registering for like China China or why do you think that is um I just don't I don't know I don't know and I didn't register for China but I went and bought it afterwards because I thought everybody else has China family yeah but as a photographer who sees a lot of brides and Thomas cool eyebrows I don't think that women are registering as much for China and they used to some is yeah how do you make time anybody could ask this question how do you make time to make a pretty presentation when you're super busy I think they leave it to that but how do you make time when you coming from basketball soccer or whatever I'm rushing in how do you make time some does somebody late I'm kind of envisioning nice I would like to say that I engage my boys okay you know one of them and for two of them are particularly do kind of enjoy cooking a bit or there at least resourceful enough to think through things and follow a recipe or whatever right so I say boys get down here and help and then I never set the table they set the table and I've just showed them how and it doesn't look awesome you know what I mean it's kind of like this and that's turn that way and it's just like this and I have to say no come on y'all do it right which is what y'all had to say to me growing up I remember that cuz I just was like whatever but I just say to them no come on y'all it's our dinner table they just put it there and make it right so I think just letting other people help you and not feeling like you have to do it yourself and real quickly and briefly mom I'll say something you told me years ago daddy told you when we were growing up and you were trying to do creative stuff and make it pretty and we were kids so we weren't appreciative and we weren't really maybe we didn't like what you made yeah and I remember one time dad you said daddy looked at you and said Lois the five things you know they do like just keep making that over and over don't don't try to be inventive and it's okay just take those relief off yeah you said that to me when the boys were little you were like Priscilla do the best you can if there are four or five things they like make that and take the pressure off of you to have it to be creative and you know like Martha Stewart or or even our sweet Joanna Gaines we can't reach the standard and we just gotta give ourselves up yes because the table is more than eating the table is for more than eating it's for making memories with discussion says what what are some things you guys do to make memories what are some things you do or you go let me engage the kids especially most of you have boys yeah highs and lows and the rule is you can only have one low oh yeah you can't because they just want to have three lows so we say highs and lows and it can't be I didn't like school today that's not an option and it can't please making video games that's not your house you gotta find something else school that you don't like you know because because I want to speak to spur on real conversation and they'll kind of go to those things so highs and lows is one thing sometimes we play a game at the table can be anything know connect for and that happens you know probably once a month I mean not off sitting there and engaging we're reading this summer and so I have the boys when we sit down at the table tell us about their book and the other boys ask questions so in lieu of book reports just share what you're reading right so really and there's a jar of questions that we have conversation starters and they reach in there and some of the questions the ten-year-old doesn't even understand because I thought this you know from some women's event but but the bottom line is it spurs us on like would you rather do this or this and it just starts interesting conversation yeah I feel honestly when we're trying to talk to our boys because boys are different than girls for sure a lot of times I am grasping for straws but I remember sitting at my parents table and then busted at us to be still or trying to do devotions and daddy taught awfully you whatever and daddys trying to say thus saith the Lord and deliver the Word of God and he and they just can't even get us to quit laughing we're sitting under the table kicking each other and daddy's like crystal like what it's her I mean so I remember all of that and think not doing it perfectly doing it perfectly isn't the goal the goal is that your family remembers that you made the effort to connect and you consistently did that and then they will catch something you do devotions to the table as well something once a week maybe your devotions in the morning because we got kids being home week we eat breakfast are going to kick off our day just before everybody leaves the table will have a devotional and I think that's so important what you said crystal that I think sometimes people look at our family and now this is how we did they think this is what it look like but exactly as chaotic as you think it would be for for kids to be sitting around a table while a dad is trying to have devotional and a mom is trying to get them to eat their green beans that's exactly what it looked like but our parents they just were not perfect but they were consistent and persistent yeah and also like just pairing the two of like mealtime in a rush and kind of you know family sit-down the table for me though it's different because my kids one of them can't talk and the other one you ask her how her day is and she's like hmm you know we're eaters we eat at the island but you know what that looks like for me if I'm in rushes I pair our quality time with fixing dinners so I'll even though it's you know messy Oh Ellie come and help me with dinner and so if I'm in arrest and that also completes the quality time that I'm trying to have with her for that day and then also we get the meal done at the same time I'm usually you know Josh plays with JT and so we're kind of doing everything all at once and then for you know just talking points and all of that for toddlers yeah usually like I play like fun camp type Christian music that she knows and so you know we'll ask her about her day which we don't usually get much out of unless we know something that happened and could kind of lead her into that but then we'll just let her kind of sing some Christian songs they kind of have fun at the table until we can really you know discuss things with the two of them yeah I can say both as being a recipient of my mother's China and my parents table and then having a season of years where it was just she and I yeah and she alluded earlier that you know banquet chicken pot pies were the best I would put the yogurt on the bottom of the refrigerators on a Saturday morning she would not bother me yeah but what I think about the fact that even during those seasons of transition that we weren't doing a lot of this all the time it was she and I but one thing we would do frequently is invite friends over and when we would do that my friends all her auntie's she would get in the kitchen and cook with me and even though that wasn't everyday that was still a memory of togetherness over meals so this is a great way sit down at the table but be creative we would watch what American Idol every Tuesday night and have friends over okay I don't know that much besides that we we did it for a season that's what we did that's where you learned to cook a lot I think you was doing cooking for friends so yes do you feel let me steal on me I grew up in dysfunction how do I begin a legacy of love and faith for my children and someday my grandchildren how does a person begin you know what I would say that is actually the key word begin yeah pick two or three things maybe that you just saw today like you know what I want that habit of my kids knowing the smell of the cherry cake thing and then decide I'm gonna start making it and go to the grocery store or order your groceries and have them delivered whatever ones for you and then just choose two or three things and begin whatever you do consistently will sort of catch on and I think that sometimes we get overwhelmed because we think it has to look perfect has to be amazing but that perfection is actually the enemy of just beginning mm-hmm so just pick a couple things we talked about today right and just do them and because life is so busy and so quick you have to fight for it yes you do me am i right yeah my talks about fighting for your family and literally today you have to fight well I mean raising them we're fighting for a family but no you guys have to really put on some gloves and fight for your family at a time remember it's not the electronics and yeah oh wow yeah that's very important electronics at the table yes do you feel as a society we have allowed too many when we just talked about that outside activities and events into our lives what drives us away from those traditional times together and that's what we have to fight for it yeah if it's one two days because yes the kids are in sports you're working what's going on that's important and priority and to your life but you've got to fight for it if it's just one or two days a week where you sit down and and laid a table and cook a meal that's quick not expensive turn off all the electronics have devotions have the memorize scripture like carrots to turn on music for the kids depending on the age fight for it one or two days a week where you guys do it cuz you guys are fighting for to the general menu and it's tiring recently I feel like giving up like hmm when I want what I mean by the things that I'm fighting for yeah like the dinner we're gonna sit down two or three days a week we are having dinner they are helping with dinner they're not gonna be on their video games at this time because they're going to participate in help and we're gonna be together I'm fighting for it so hard because again my boys are teenagers so they have no interest in family time they just want to be isolated themselves and beyond their devices and fighting for it feels so hard particularly I know that many of you are in a situation where you are fighting for it by yourself like you're married but your spouse doesn't have not that he's not a good dad but maybe your spouse didn't grow up in a family where those things could prioritize which is not a priority to them and so you feel like you got to do it yourself yeah and for a lot of people you just can feel like man this is not I just I'm tired of this but yes whatever you do consistent consistently over the course of those years that you're raising those kids don't develop a taste for it because we didn't appreciate it when you were doing it like we just we were like oh my gosh we have to come to the table again yeah but now this is our habit generally speaking in our family it's our habit yes it's what our parents fought for and let me read a scripture isaiah 59:21 and tell you why you fight for it and why it's so important as for me this is my covenant with them says the lord my spirit who is with you will not depart from you and my words that i have put in your mouth will always be on your lips on the lips of your children and on the lips of your descendants from this time and forever' says the lord it's not about you me the focus is not on you and me it's about generations and generations to come it's a legacy so that's why you fight and yes when you get tired you keep going because of God's promise we've done recently is instead of like trying to do the DeVos at the end of the day at dinner when Ellie is like bouncing off the walls and like wants to play is I just have woken up a little bit earlier and done it in the morning so instead of sending her to school for breakfast I'll make her breakfast and then ylabel and like do Jesus calling kids or something like that because she's calmer in the morning and so is JT and so I think you just have to figure out the patterns of your family and if there may be a homeschool mom and like lunch is a good solid time you know maybe it's not dinner maybe it's lunch for you but for us it's breakfast that's when my littles are the calmest and kin getting really in take the most helps her at school as well how this prayer time over a meal for you guys how does it go our kids engaged in for your time sometimes everybody's got a bad attitude cuz whatever that day they don't want to be at the table and so sometimes then you know instead of one of them praying me or your dad prays and yeah pray over them because we can tell they're not there today but it doesn't stop us from doing it we're still doing it you're still gonna hear the devotional right and you're still gonna be engaged so a lot of times as much as possible I asked one of the boys to pray over the family right just so they feel engaged and involved but it doesn't always happen particularly if you just give yourself a break and yeah of course do you and I were chatting about praying over your boys when they were when you were driving me somewhere we're talking I said you needed to share that when we have our live event do you remember what that was they just pray with the boys in the bed I think good whatever some no the other day I went and got them out of a bed yeah and one literally rolled out of the bed onto the floor at least so he got up on his knees and I just put my hand on his head and just prayed a prayer of blessing over him just talk to him about his wife about his future Wow about his direction about his relationship with God and what I think is so interesting is when I pray over them that way individually where I'm touching them they they're they melt in my hand on a display there's something about me putting my hand on their shoulder or on their forehead they just are like it's a yes there's a receiving that happens so praying over them I usually do that at bedtime or sometimes we're kneeling together at the base of a bed together yes and then I get up and they're still kneeling and then I keep praying over them but I like to pray over them with their brothers hearing me speak to them about their future and I tell my especially my oldest son I tell him all the time he had to make a decision of their day and I said he said it doesn't matter I said it doesn't matter make a decision because you're gonna be a man of God one day who's gonna be a great decision maker who leads your wife and your kids hmm so tell me what you young man want to do well you know and I don't know well let's pray about it together so we try to do that and then at the table because I think sometimes for kids it's hard it's just prayer we got to pray for the dinner what what to pray for what really are your deep concerns when you're 14 so I think giving them something to pray for is helpful so we do that well we were remember when we were growing up the Christmas cards that you were seeing from other people we would pray for those over the year and so we have ribbon hanging right near a kitchen table there's a wall and we just have ribbon hanging and we staple the cards to the wall and just you know once or twice a month we'll just do the next family and then I tell my kids the story of the family how I know them what their kids are doing and we pray for you because your cards were up there so that gives them something to pray for of course we're praying for you mommy with them for the church we pray for their school year so it's often it's not that they have to pray it's that we have to give them something to pray for our church puts a comforting care list on our bulletin I bring that home we don't even know half the people but I just say here's the name here's their issue and we pray for them and just engaging them in the habit of doing it it goes back to what you're doing consistently and then the hope is that later when they really do have something to pray for they remember how it yeah we do create a bedtime and Josh leads us in that but I really make it a point to pray out loud when I'm with Ellie and with the kids last week in the car she's like mommy who are you talking to Jesus just just to get her used to hearing we pray all day and we're constantly talking to him and so I think I found that it's like in I'll hear her talking and she'll say you know or she included Jesus in just any daily conversation just because I try to make it a point to just pray out loud yeah throughout the day throughout the day Deuteronomy 11 19 you should teach them to your children talking to them when you're sitting in the house and when you're walking by the way and when you lie down and when you rise so it doesn't have to be done only at the table like he just said cares you're driving because you're going from school to some other appointment and and you just pray out loud one we pass an accident we pray for the person actually that's beautiful you know we just say whoever it is we just pray for them that they're that they'll be healed and look at the helping so just to your point there are so many opportunities that we have to pray at the table forth certain things but just on the go yeah just Alma go seeing in need and responding immediately in prayer and your kids seeing you do that right yes proverbs another scripture we're running out of time but I just love these scriptures that keeps keeps us encouraged but it's just hard and you really want to throw your hands up and say get you a meal proverbs 13 22 says a good man leaves and inheritances children this verse keeps our life goals kids need to know that that the family has goals the family has visions and our legacy front and center all the time so that's what a table is important because that's what you got to be but hopefully all distractions away and the whole family knows where we're going whether they're listening or not when we weigh what we want now against what we really want later we realize how temporary satisfaction please in comparison to the legacy of purpose and generational fulfillment and an inheritance is not limited to money it's also when we're choosing how to use our money today combined combined in a financial inheritance with wisdom and godliness ensures that the next generation will also manage God's blessings God's Way for God's glory long after I graduate to heaven you know that that they will have to have some legacy goals vision some reason some purpose behind why in the world am I here yeah and it's all done around that table that's how the Jewish families did it right yeah and Israel is set that the father set to the head of the table and they rehearse scriptures they learn scriptures you didn't have a choice yeah and today I think parents are a little lenient yeah and there's certain things we should be strict about yes you know although you know kids aren't happy as you're teaching in the Bible verses maybe memorize the book of James yeah it is what it is what I think it's happening a forty-year-old will thank me one day yes the engine will rise up and call me lesson yes well mom I've got no we've got to go but I gotta say something before we because everybody should know that we are getting ready to ourselves and this incredible crew that is here we're getting ready to devour this yes so I want to tell you all something because I am looking at this meal and I realized it is completely unbalanced I want to know this would not be a normal meal so mom called us and said just pick two things two or three things that you want to share yes but we didn't like coordinate making sure there was enough vegetables in it so we wouldn't yes say with potatoes and macaroni and cheese and rolls and more pasta and the chicken pox so you know this we would bring more balance to our families they'd have probably two or three vegetables yes yeah we have whale on
