hi i'm amy from cybernews.com a site of discoveries and opinions in the field of cybersecurity in this video we'll compare two of the most recognizable password managers the market has to offer dashlane and lastpass when it comes to pinpointing which password manager is right for you it can take a lot of research so we'll put dashlane and lastpass head-to-head and see why you'd choose one over the other multi-factor security is like a second lock on your door it adds an additional barrier for your protection dashlane allows 2fa via email an authentication app and verification by pin or fingerprint while lastpass also supports 2fa smartcards usb tokens window fingerprint and the list goes on with this feature lastpass takes the cake with the option of combining different methods when it comes to data storage most managers can also double for safe cloud storage which is great for your sensitive data files as a free user of lastpass you can get 50 megabytes of encrypted files but it only goes up one gigabyte if you decide to subscribe for the premium plan and if storing higher size files is what you're after you might run into some limitation problems in the comparison of encrypted data storage it's really down to what suits you best it's safe to say this is quite an in-depth topic so for more information check out our comparison list down in the description moving on to transparency 2019 was a bad year for lastpass when researchers found a vulnerability that could steal user data this was a pretty significant case and two consecutive exploits were found once maybe all could be forgiven but a second time it's pretty hard to let slide leaving lastpass in the dust dashlane has a pretty clean track record let's jump into an important comparison features from the first glance both password managers offer almost identical products yet dashlane blows lastpass out of the water on this one in terms of its significantly well thought out security suite when it comes to password importing both managers have this feature lastpasses option is pretty generous allowing imports from your browser other password managers and other source exports dashlane does offer a similar service by importing through csv files and restriction when it comes to password imports but in this sense lastpass offers more flexibility in the password importing case and takes this round what happens if you forget your master password and want to access these prized passwords with lastpass there's a huge option for password recovery but if any of the options mentioned don't work out you'll need to start from the beginning creating an entirely new account from scratch even if you've already paid bummer right dashlane is more restrictive in this sense with a business account you have the option to register someone as your emergency contact and this person can then retrieve your data for all of us non-business account folk you can reset your master password with biometric data if you enable it if not you're out of luck there is no other way dashlane's lack of recovery options could have a silver lining because each recovery option could be an extra means of exploitation for a cyber criminal however if recovering your password is your main goal lastpass is the simpler option usually password managers will offer some kind of option to generate a secure password and in this case rest assured both password managers offer this feature with just a few minor differences when it comes to password sharing dashlane offers a less restrictive option lastpass allows you to effortlessly share information between many users with few restrictions frustratingly only family or all business plans can actually benefit from this option as it's not available for free or premium users if you aren't looking to spend a thing dashlane is a lot less confining with this free account and password sharing and if you do decide to go premium you'll be able to bypass this limit and gain access to unlimited sharing whilst dashlane has some limitations it gives you room for flexibility when it comes to password sharing even someone who spends a small amount of time online can appreciate the joy that autofill brings lastpass's option is not only limited to passwords which is a great way to save time and adds a safer third party alternative dashdane offers this feature and more helping you fill out online registrations in the blink of an eye in this sense dashlane stays on top with its reliable autofill customization and options to add visual cues when choosing a payment option let's talk value for money if we look at the free version and paid options the answers are different and if we're talking about splashing the cash dashlane is a better paid option whilst last part is a better free service and if you look at it like that it's really what you're willing to spend both password managers offer generous free versions lastpass's premium account should be compared to its features if you're looking to go premium that is with features like so there aren't many scenarios where i'll choose the premium version over the free with dashlane's premium plan the prices can initially put you off but when you look at the features available to you the price is pretty justifiable from where i'm sitting it seems more appealing to go for the dashlane premium plan if you're looking to go outside of free plans that is let's compare the desktop apps of these password managers setting up lastpass on your desktop is pretty simple you just head to their website and from there you can install the app you can access the app on various platforms you should know that lastpass reserves many functionalities for their web clients leaving very little need to actually download the app dashlane setup couldn't be easier download the app directly from their website and select the app according to your device the mobile apps are both a walk in the park to download when it comes to lastpass you can expect all the features of their browser client there are also excellent additions such as the ability to use autofill in apps you can also access your password vault via apple watch and conveniently paste login data to and from your vault dash name provides everything you'd potentially need although the mobile version has a different take on design from the desktop app version let's talk browser extensions if you prefer convenience and you aren't too bothered by extension vulnerabilities then lastpass offers an extension for plenty of browsers and installations are very simple just a couple of clicks of your mouse and you're off when it comes to extensions dashlane isn't too different from lastpass it offers extensions for the same browsers but with a special possibility this standalone mode doesn't connect to your vault and keeps only local copies of your passwords so in regards to extensions dashlane is the more versatile option for many of us customer support can be a deal-breaker and if you cherish your 24-hour service and quick problem-solving i don't blame you lastpass might be a little tricky to get a hold of in this regard with only two options of contact and sadly their support tickets only available to premium members this kind of seems that free users that need help are pushed to buy premium and i don't like that one bit dashlane has a great communication service with live chat at the top of the list and unlike lastpass dashbane offers premium users priority support whilst these competitors offer similar features there is no denying that dashlane has a certain edge as a password manager a vpn and great customer support alone are reasons enough to choose this password manager yet we can't deny that lastpass is probably the most generous free password manager that you can find if you want to learn more about password managers don't be afraid to click on the link down in the description and visit our website
