"Las Vegas of Space" - The Crystal Palace | Cyberpunk 2077 Lore

the Crystal Palace is one of if not the most elusive location within the cyberpunk series spanning back to even the original tabletop RPGs of the late 80s which are the Canon predecessors to 2077 created by Mike pondsmith and his team at art housewarian games despite his popularity and importance few people actually get the chance to step foot the Crystal Palace even as a player of the ttrpgs it's practically impossible to reach someone is able to find themselves within his fast architecture it wouldn't be outlandish to claim they've made it to the top which makes bees heist in the secret ending all the more meaningful it may not be entering legally but that was never in the question pulling off a heist on the Crystal Palace much less even attempting it is the peak of being a legendary solo there's a lot more to learn and understand about the Las Vegas of space that isn't provided in our playthrough of 2077 ranging from its fascinating design and imitation of gravity history illitary use if it will appear in Phantom Liberty and even a rumored group of elite solos that find their home with it today I will be covering it all so if you're a fan of cyberpunk and would like to might not have a complete grasp on just what exactly the Crystal Palace is and how it functions I'm gonna fix that while there is a common misconception that it's essentially a space casino is actually much more when the comparison is made at Las Vegas but in space it isn't simply prioritizing the gambling atmosphere of Vegas it is quite literally a full-scale city in space containing of course the casinos but also restaurants low gravity pools luxury apartments concert venues a hotel a park and even its very own conference halls for corporate clients so how exactly does this orbital Colony manage to not only fit but organize all of these activities and construct itself into a realistic manner well we can actually find this information along with the diagram in the cyberpunk 2013 Source book near orbit in this diagram you can see that you'd be entering at the top of the colony in a rotating talking core there are then five toroidal green structures surrounding the two kilometer Center or of the station each of these ring structures boasts another 2.2 kilometers in length starting from the top we have a living Park Taurus a residential Taurus factory Taurus residential Taurus then finally another living Park Taurus and the bottom contains the power slash life support core that functions through a solar power array and fuel cells which you can also find at the top inside each inner Taurus are four levels of living facilities manufacturing plants life support systems and apartment blocks the two outer toroids support huge open Parks they are not only for recreation but also provide the bulk of the palace's oxygen supply While most of this area is devoted to open space there are common buildings restaurants and housing for high ranking corporate and European Space Agency officials while initially viewing the Crystal Palace you might be forgiven for imagining a map layout might look like this following the ring-like top view we see in the original map however this couldn't be further from the real layout of the Crystal Palace you see what could be considered the floors in this layout are actually supposed to be the walls of the Crystal Palace so a proper layout of its design would be an extremely stretched out rectangle to mimic the rotated surface being laid out the reasoning behind this actually makes a lot of sense obviously there isn't a gravitational pull when you're in space so just like any modern astronaut citizens would just be flying around trying to Traverse the city The Architects found a fix to this though I mean the toroids spin at a sufficient enough rotation provide 0.8 G at The Rim mimicking the pull of gravity spinning when I first read this information I was actually a bit surprised by the thought put into this design as I originally thought there would just be some weird excuse or technology for producing gravity though who exactly owns the space Colony well in short it's the European Space Agency also known as the esa but they are heavily sponsored by orbital air which is where they get most of their funding despite this fact though it's used by all space capable Nations Each of which maintain an embassy on the palace for its Nationals living space tends to be released by the esa to the highest bidders on a 20-year renewable basis in turn the esa maintains Emergency Services General Security and station upkeep the station also provides military purposes such as being the testing ground of the tsunami air hammer pistol which is now used as the crystal palace's standard for its security Force so found this powerful space Colony come to be created while there's quite a bit of History to the city that traces itself back to the year 2000 in which the esa begun construction with funding of 7 billion Euro dollars only four months into construction though the first corporate War would spark between ebm and orbital air this was a defining moment in cyberpunk's history as it was the first conflict of its kind Direct Corporate Warfare and never before occurred though this was somewhat of a Pandora's Box that led the way for the next three corporate Wars sprout while the first corporate War went on to end in a victory for orbital air and clear benefit of Esa and Crystal Palace instruction continued until it would reach its next hiccup in 2009 a USA unquote terrorist group would attempt an abortive takeover of Crystal Palace construction however Esa discovered relatively quickly that this was a defense intelligence agency fought by the USA in which they responded by utilizing their monopolized Mass drivers to drop a five-ton Rock off the coast of Washington DC as a warning after this there's no surprise that construction wrapped up smoothly and its doors went on to open in 2011 providing the esa a permanent hold in the high orbit Zone in the early 2020s the palace was rumored to be the home of the Angels a group of at least 12 individuals each one an elite martial artist and were considered the best solos ever it was from the palace that they would fall upon their targets just imagine having a Morgan black can lay in front of you after falling from orbit only to absolutely sweep your ass and leave it's this prospect that actually makes this group seem so terrifying yet hard to believe it obviously they aren't landing on you with no gear or Shuttle May likely be in some form of a pod unless there's some crazy Borg conversions we don't know about that would allow them to spinal this no records of them ever existing were found but only the words of a number of harsh prominent solos which were rather varied unclaimed to back their existence while some pointed out the inconsistencies and unrealistic stories since this was back during the 2020s it's hard to say if we will ever know during the fourth corporate war in late September of 2022 a killsat artillery strike fired at the orbital habitat in the Crystal Palace seemingly by accident three High Riders intercepted the projectiles and died protecting the station later that year the esa ordered Delta gents on the Crystal Palace to destroy several suspicious orbital facilities the same time the U.S and Soviets were doing similar things on other parts of the globe despite the order to not attack assets belonging to other nations mistake was made and all three nations began to destroy every facility they could find no matter whom it belonged to once the orbital War finished many satellites and space facilities had been destroyed but the Crystal Palace endured likely as a result of its shared prominence in corporations and Nations alike by 2077 not much had changed the palace had already become the most famous and expansive space station in orbit continuing to be owned by the esa and providing all of its services only thing that could possibly shake the foundation in which a Crystal Palace has built is a successful Heist by the legendary solo V only time will tell if he is capable of pulling off the seemingly impossible task and being the first and likely only solo ever to do so this is obviously a lot of information for a location we've only seen in the sky and never even stepped foot in though here's the question that everyone has been asking in relation to Phantom Liberty will we go to the Crystal Palace in the new expansion I mean just look at the identifying points in the trailer we see a fancy Casino looking location that Songbird read Envy all find themselves in while also seeing the orbital air Space Center and a shuttle being prepped for launch in the same trailer there's even an unfinished model you can spawn within 2077 for the Crystal Palace though this has to be the case right well honestly despite what we see in the trailer I just don't think there's a chance we'll go to the Crystal Palace as far as I know this obviously isn't confirmed and I could be wrong but I will explain myself within the trailer itself it seems like Reed and V are actually trying to escape night City not only this their plan of the orbital air Space Center seems to go South as we can see chaos all over the mission during the trailer even a helicopter crashing in a V ancy location can easily be any other location we have the obvious North Oak Casino that currently remains unfinished however we know multiple spots around night City will be expanded on in the expansion alongside Dogtown doesn't even have to be this casino though as there's any number of underground corpo Hangouts we could find ourselves in and finally narratively it just doesn't make sense the Crystal Palace is the peak it's symbolism for the secret ending lies in the fact that V has not only ever been there but there's never been a heist pulled off in it have our characters successfully enter the Crystal Palace and complete any sort of objective immediately nullifies any meaning from V's final heist don't get me wrong I would love to go to the Crystal Palace and see what it contains as we have literally never been able to even to my knowledge there's not a single layout or stats for it in the ttrpgs that would even allow for it to be infiltrated
