what's up guys so I really love dromeo Series where they have a a really professional and talented drummer come in and try to learn a song they've never heard before so they just hear it one time and they try to learn it larnell Lewis actually learned Enter Sandman after listening to it one time he did an amazing job covering it um of course it wasn't perfect but you know he did a really good job of getting as close as possible and I didn't know he had another song that he had done this for also so I haven't checked this video out yet so I wanted to check it out with you guys guys and yeah let's get right into it hey what's up I'm lell Lewis what up and I'm here at Dro doing a few things and one of them is learning a song by ear now I get asked quite often how is it that I'm able to learn songs really quickly uh one actually uh one example of that is the we like you hear record from snarky Puppy for the exception with the exception of two songs I actually learned that album on a 7 and 1/2 hour flight on my way to Europe to record those sessions wow uh it was a lot of pressure but it's a situation I'm familiar with I could I could never make a lot of notes I was able to connect the music and of course the players really made me feel comfortable but in this situation I'm learning this song for the first time I'm hearing it for the first time and I have no clue what I'm about to hear uh but what you're going to see is me working through my process of understanding sections understanding the form getting through shots listening to nuances and I don't know how many times I'm going to have to listen but I'm going to do my best to grab as many details as possible and hopefully just end up with a complete take it's called chick's pain uh I don't know what so last time I believe he uh paid attention to the time signature the structure of the song anything that like repeats and um yeah that's pretty much all he uh paid attention to um I'm pretty sure there's more but those were like some of the key things that um I've been focusing on like trying to learn covers and stuff to take from that title if you don't like the song or the title you can blame Dave I have nothing to do with it I'm just an innocent bystander I'm here to share my musical talent and it's Dave's fault hopefully there's a there's next to no pain but if there is it will all be for your viewing pleasure Okay so kind of nervous not going to lie just just a little bit but that's all right that means I'm going to be more focused soet I didn't know they had more more learning what I like to do is listen to the song um if I'm in a crunch for time I'll make some notes and I'll just kind of figure out all sections this and the other I think I might just do one listen one pass through hear what I can hear not make any notes and see what happens I'm just curious it's all up here right okay there's a build there who I'm going to have to check that intro again oh man these jazz drummers man okay I heard the comping pattern but the base is giving me the [Music] steady I might follow the [Music] base and we went right into a solo so I got to be aware of my activity [Music] okay build yeah that part is tricky okay I think there's a beat drop there at some point ke solo I'm lost on that eight it would take me forever to try to write drums for a song like this 16 bars so different vibe [Music] here okay I hear that quote I guess the easiest thing would pay attention to the [Music] base [Music] [Applause] build right base solo so much for [Music] that it's eight bars [Music] [Music] mhm 16 bars Vibe change his breathing is making me want to breathe heavy for some reason like giving me anxiety for some reason seven Okay so so Unison line at the end of the basee sololo build oh [Music] cool I think I'm going to have to write this down if I want to be successful I think the saying is the shortest pencil is longer than the longest memory so yeah I'm going to write this down so when I make my notes um what I like to do is I try my best to scratch out a ballpark form so I will count the amount of bars when things change I will kind of end my bars there write the number of bars that went by and then write another staff Al together um I might use Ab sections or chuses and verses but all right let's go let's see what happens that's pretty much like what the intro so I got quite a bit of information from that last have to scr through and get that shot so I know the rhythms what I'm seeing here is there's a keys intro I think I'm ready to give it a try what do you guys think we could do it let's do it oh my God smooth as butter you would not know he only heard this song one time or at least for the first time like a couple minutes ago [Music] perfect [Music] even thr his own freestyle in there [Music] I just want to hear that I want to hear that part one more time I love how you use the symbols in this part [Music] woo let getting hot in here [Music] now oh man I'm sorry I just got to pause that one more time I just love the fact that he knew the base was coming out and and bass is harder to hear than most most instruments so he kind of had to like calm it down and he knew that he knew that the bass needed more um more of a uh room to shine [Music] basically the rest of the instruments too honestly [Music] [Music] double outro [Music] woo so that was my first and only take was a big out hope you enjoyed a couple of things I want to draw your attention to um you know it's really important to practi listening and imagining yourself playing the drums uh that type of mental practice was really huge in this particular exercise and also when I have to learn songs when I'm away from the drums um list listening to a lot of different music and hearing some of the isms that other musicians play like the basist or the keyboard player and then understanding that when those things happen you have particular options that you can draw from when you have to play on the kit um I think Dave is is happy about that take and the rest of the team as well at dromeo and I'm really thankful to do this challenge is a lot of fun I hope you learned a lot from it and yeah keep listening keep practicing oh man I just I just loved all that so um know it's always fascinating to see these drummers learn these songs like super fast and they can I mean what he was playing was already very difficult drumming in my opinion um I couldn't play any of that and I've been playing drums for a year which isn't that much but um still it's like he can just hear a song and learn the structure and everything and he just laid down drums that fit I mean more than perfect to the song um so that's that to me is just like real raw talent and uh it's not you don't see that very much um you don't see that every day so um yeah this is this is incredible stuff man I love Dro when they do these things because it really shows you the difference between like a drummer like me who's a beginner and it takes me a whole week to learn one song um basically that's where I'm at right now and uh you know these guys have been playing for so long and they can just pick it up in minutes man it makes it gets me really inspired you know watching these drummers on this channel with you guys always gets me inspired and uh I don't you can't really see my drum set behind me but uh yeah that thing gets gets uh gets used almost every day um at least for an hour or two because I just love playing the drums man um I do love playing guitar too I'm writing music on guitar but the drums have always been a special place in my life and uh yeah that's why I do this stuff on this channel too anyways I just love music in general um especially metal but uh anyways guys what do you think about uh the way he learned this this song man um yeah incredible work from this guy I love watching lell Lewis he's got a lot more videos up so if you're a fan of his uh let me know any videos you suggest of him and we'll definitely check them out anyways thank you guys so much for watching if you haven't seen the um inter Sandman video where he learned it all in just like this in one take or at least one listen check it out should be popping up right up here so again thank you guys for watching and I'll see you on that video
