[Music] hey welcome back to stratelli studios i'm jeff gastinon and i bring you larnell lewis hears a song once and plays it perfectly um this was suggested to me by bruno andretti uh on the channel and i know other people have brought this up a few months ago when i when i first started the channel and uh i just hadn't gotten around to to looking at it so i'm glad that uh you reminded me of this bruno because i'm totally excited about seeing how he pulls this off so this is gonna be fun all right let's do this let's hit that play button here we go hey what's up i'm larnell lewis and i'm here at drumeo doing a few things and one of them is learning a song by ear now i get asked quite often how is it that i'm able to learn songs really quickly yeah one actually one example of that is the we like it here record from snarky puppy for the exception with the exception of two songs i actually learned that album on a seven and a half hour flight on my way to europe to record those sessions uh it was a lot of pressure but it's a situation i'm familiar with i didn't make a lot of notes i was able to connect the music and of course the players really made me feel comfortable but in this situation i'm learning this song for the first time i'm hearing it for the first time and i have no clue what i'm about to hear but what you're gonna see is me working through my process of understanding sections understanding the form getting through shots listening to nuances and i don't know how many times i'm gonna have to listen but i'm gonna do my best to grab as many details as possible and hopefully just end up with a complete take wow it's called chicks pain uh i don't know what to take from that title if you don't like the song or the title you can blame dave i have nothing to do with it i'm just an innocent bystander i'm here to share my musical talent and uh hopefully there's a there's next to no pain but if there is it will all be for your viewing pleasure okay so kind of nervous not gonna lie just just a little bit but that's all right that means i'm gonna be more focused so let's talk more learning what i like to do is listen to the song um if i'm in a crunch for time i'll make some notes and i'll just kind of figure out all sections this than the other i think i might just do one listen one pass through hear what i can hear not make any notes and see what happens i'm just curious [Music] okay [Music] there's a build there [Music] whoa i'm gonna have to check that intro again okay hear the coughing pattern [Music] but the base is giving me the steady [Music] ah [Music] i might follow the base interesting [Music] and we went right into a solo so i gotta be aware of my activity okay [Music] gold [Music] i think there's a beat dropped there at some point wow solo [Music] eight [Music] sixteen bars so different vibe here [Music] is that spain okay i hear that quote [Music] [Music] [Applause] right base solo [Music] that's eight bars [Music] 16 bars vibe change opens up [Music] seven okay so units in line at the end of the base solo cool [Music] build oh [Music] [Music] cool i think i'm going to have to write this down yeah i want to be successful i think the saying is the shortest pencil is longer than the longest memory so yeah i'll write this down so when i make my notes um you gotta remember what i like to do is i try my best to scratch out a ballpark form so i will count the amount of bars when things change i will kind of end my bars there write the number of bars that went by and then write another staff i might use a b sections or choruses and verses but all right let's go see what happens from the top again so i got quite a bit of information from that last lesson i'm gonna have to scrub through and get that shot so i know the rhythms what i'm seeing here is there's a keys intro i think i'm ready to give it a try whoa man let's do it this is nuts [Music] [Music] oh man [Music] oh that's interesting this beater is hitting the he's hitting off center of the uh the drum head [Music] i've never seen that wow that makes for a tighter a tighter kick [Music] so [Music] that's weird because the beater looked dead center on that shot i'm not sure what's going on with that [Music] oh i see the transparent head [Music] it's got that the kick drum locked with a bass guitar [Music] [Music] wow [Music] oh come on he knows the riff so well now he's just playing with it but it's his bottom half is like the base guitar his upper half is like following the keys it's amazing [Music] [Music] [Music] oh wow [Music] i love the ghost notes [Music] [Music] so [Music] wow so that was my first and only take i hope you enjoyed wow a couple of things i want to draw your attention to um you know it's really important to practice listening and imagining yourself playing the drums uh that type of mental practice was really huge in this particular exercise and also when i have to learn songs when i'm away from the drums um listening to a lot of different music and hearing some of the isms that other musicians play like the bassist or the keyboard player yeah and then understanding that when those things happen you have particular options that you can draw from when you have to play on the kit um i think dave is a is happy about that take the rest of the team as well at drumeo and i'm really thankful for the opportunity to do this challenge is a lot of fun i hope you learned a lot from it and yeah keep listening keep practicing [Music] man that man that was absolutely phenomenal uh to see him do that um it's seeing him play that i mean when he finally got his first run through was like watching somebody who has been playing this song for the last five years i mean he wears the part i mean it's gosh i don't know how he gets there so fast usually to get to that point where you're that comfortable like he was taking those uh syncopated uh chickoria-esque runs and he was playing with it he already internalized what those rhythms were and you know he's not just playing a snare to match that that riff that that they're doing uh he was going all over the kit like it was nothing uh so that that's amazing i mean what an amazing amazing musician um i i'm not i'm not just calling him an amazing drummer he's an amazing musician um the the ear that he has uh in the way that he processes what he's hearing is absolutely amazing uh yeah snarky puppy got the right guy for the job when when they needed uh a fill in um amazing wow so cool thank uh thanks bruno for uh turning me on to that that's so cool um yeah we'll catch you next time bye
