LAKE FORK Tourney Recap (SLUGFEST!!!)

oh my god i can't believe i made that cast the first bassmaster tournament of the year takes us to the texas bass factory otherwise known as lake fork the lake was experiencing a warming trend and the fish were chewing with 200 kayak anglers and typical fork boat pressure my strategy was to find those overlooked waters that would be more difficult to get to gosh these fish are tucked in the bushes we gotta make a better cast than that and access those big females bedded way back in the thick stuff i spent a good amount of time and practice scouting beds but it also found a very consistent pattern that had me on the right fish i knew fork was gonna be an absolute slugfest all right y'all we've got all right we got the bassmaster kayak open the first one of the year on world renown lake fork in texas guys i've had a freaking spectacular practice been a fun week um spent all day yesterday and the day before just doing a lot of prep work uh getting in these tight little areas where you can't get a bass boat marking beds finding fish that are really locked on and yeah it's been fun fork is absolutely busting wide open right now it's going to be a slug fest we've got 204 anglers and some absolute hammers are representing in this one so um i'm going to do my best i'm going to have fun have a good attitude uh try to get five of the right bites and see what we can do so i've got five areas here and i'm pretty much gonna try to run the backs of these pockets and dump them out um try to hopefully these fish right now i think are gonna keep moving up it's gonna be kind of a warm day temps are right the fish are on the move and the nice thing is i've got i kind of waited to see where the kayaks dispersed i didn't know where i was going to start this morning but it looks like i'm going to have this creek to myself so uh and one other one my backup area over there doesn't have anybody in it which is crazy so we're gonna see what we can do there are also as always multiple boat tournaments going out so my strategy first i'm gonna fish this south bank it's been protected by the prevailing south wind all week so i'm going to fish it first for the boats get here before i work my way back to where they can't get and where my good fish are so we'll see if i can't pick off a fish and bass boat area before tournament starts i'm not totally feeling it i mean there's a good looking lay down right there though i'm not totally feeling it so i'm just gonna head on back looks like a bed right there guess not yeah you're not getting a boat back here i can barely get my kayak back here all right not the size [Music] that's my big fish it's freaking tucked back tucked back there all right i know what that one got that one calm down a little bit that's gonna be tough to get that fish out boy that fish is tough but i can't that that cast is so far back in there i gotta make a perfect cast i can't do it with a casting rod without being uh too obtrusive that's gonna be a fun one so i don't think that's that fish that made that wake these lands are definitely where it's at you guys hobie eyewear makes them their sightmasters they brighten all this up on these cloudy days and i can see the beds now i can't believe something didn't eat that there's a bed back in there so man that fish was that fish was gosh the big ones are just tucked it's probably an 18. that's okay i don't think i don't think a lot of people can or are going to make those casts to catch those fish there's there's a few of them that i know that will but if i can go into and dump all the backs of these pockets and catch fish like that it might be okay barely see that bed there oh my god i can't believe i oh believe i got that fish out of there no that was literally the most beaut i don't know if you all can see this but i just stick it back in there and pull that fish through the brush on a spinning rod how crazy is that i wish i wish i don't think that got that cast that was freaking awesome now i ain't care that i'm not catching the big ones right now having a dang good time that was that was way too much fun you guys oh boy that's the risk you run with that all right guys i think i fished this this cove the best i could uh lost one really good fish probably needed but we're gonna go to the next one see how much company i got in them there's two big ones right there i had them marked on my graph i just can't that one eight that one went eight something that was moving pretty fast so that might hit something faster now and i'd like to have them i'm in fourth right now but i need to get some bigger fish i know there's some guys that are really on them oh come here here we go finally that's what i needed i was just about ready to say i'm going to come back for them and let them rest a little bit on a bed or something yeah there's two of them on a bed yeah i'll take it good luck y'all you too thank you fat 18 and a quarter [Music] um that'll help [Music] pretty healthy fish all right guys it's only a half hour left competition i'm pretty much married to this spot it's a mile and a half for my next spot so i gotta stay and hopefully figure out how to catch a big fish in here um yeah so i'm gonna i think i need one more big i think i need one more fish to stay in the top ten get into the 90s there it is there it is yeah maybe gosh if they feel so much bigger man they feel big gopro stop recording that looks bigger all right the goat the actual goat the man 17 and a half guys poor little dude rip lips on that one i don't think that'll help all right guys that's it so i think i ended up just shy of 90. um not definitely not what i wanted i was on better fish but turns out the bass boats can actually get everywhere that i went and they were there so kudos to the bass boats i didn't think that was even possible but i'm learning that these uh these guys can get about as shallow as they want to um you know honestly you guys i had a ton of fun this week i caught some giant fish fork really showed out and i i made cash a check i think i should cash a check so that's that's that's good on any day i probably didn't make the top ten but in this field i'll i'll take a check so um i'm gonna head back i gotta get service to submit the rest of my photos and uh i'll catch up with y'all and let you know how i did hi doll hey paul how you doing you did fantastic today well i'll tell you maybe yesterday's enough to be a dave jones no and you know what grandpa you remember when i used to do so bad on fork yeah yeah yeah so i finally did better i remembered that because i know that you never really could get it down to where you were comfortable on it yeah your dad said you had a really good pre-tournament i did not yeah i did well that was much better hi chris how are you hey i'm good we're all real glad you did so well sorry and woke the money by one but oh my god no grandma i cashed a cheque good did you yeah i did good not a real big one but i did cash the top 30 on this one cash check there were a bunch of people in it well we miss you a lot but we really enjoy watching so we'll be on the tube a week after next all right paul sounds good love you yeah bye so yeah guys just eight inches separating 22nd where i finish from first and just two inches out of the top ten it was man every every every single inch counted um it was it was look best like i thought it was going to be my my bigger fish weren't really cooperating i think i started in the wrong spot and i don't think i fish those fish you know i don't know though like i said you guys um i had a i had a phenomenal week i caught all my fish on the the z-man billy goat texas rig on beds and then a lot of them came on that streaks too just skipping it like y'all saw way back in the brush and uh man what a fun bite so i i'm not a big fan of bed fishing um so i really wanted to to work on that and focus on it i didn't think i'd be doing it for the tournament but i wanted to challenge myself and that's what i did and i'm actually pretty proud with how we turned out so as always y'all i so greatly appreciate all the support and the the comments and the positivity and uh y'all following along my tournament journey so uh i got a week off this is my fifth tournament in a row got a little week off here but i'll be on pickwick the week after so
