five years in the nfl watching from the bench also live you are looking at snow swept lambeau field in green bay where the packers play host to the tampa bay buccaneers in blizzard conditions that bring back memories of the ice bowl and other winter classics in green bay the freezing weather is so fierce that the players waited in the tunnels until just the last minute to come out and begin practicing and still live you are now looking at perfect weather conditions the superdome in new orleans words the saints against the los angeles rams who enjoy a two-game lead in the nfc's and are close to clinching a playoff berth in this one there is a new face on the sidelines as wade phillips bun sun makes his debut as head coach of the saints later today the washington redskins battled the san francisco 49ers in a matchup between two teams that have represented the nfc in the last four super bowls i'll be reporting live throughout today from rfk stadium they'll also have a behind-the-scenes story on the life of a referee in the national football league last week we told you who the five playoff teams from the nfc are going to be and today we'll give you the five playoff teams from the other conference six volkswagens it's not a car it's a volkswagen seiko and your authorized seiko dealer man invented time seiko perfected it and by xerx antifreeze and coolant don't face winter without it and now here's brent musberger good afternoon everybody welcome to the nfl today and jimmy we've got some illustrious company with us today the great former running back james brown of the cleveland browns and dick vermeel what a pleasure it is not to say hey dick are you going to become the next football coach at notre dame they never talk to me and you know that's the truth i've said over my dead body speaking of notre dame i want to involve all three of you in what has become a controversy regarding yesterday's route by miami over the irish did jimmy johnson and the hurricanes run up the score this is in the fourth quarter 44-7 six minutes to go second string quarterback zips one to andre brown and the keynes have got another one against jerry faust now it's 51-7 here comes the punt rush it is blocked recovered by bill hawkins for a touchdown interestingly enough only 10 miami players were on the field when that occurred i guess that shows you how bad they played against coach johnson yesterday but jimmy brown what about it did he unnecessarily run up the score yesterday on faust and the irish my attitude brent is uh don't regulate my intensity especially if i'm on a second team in other words i think the only time a football player should relax is when the season is over period dick vermeel you were a coach what about that situation i agree with jim if you have your second unit in there and they're playing they've got to be they've got to play like winners and they did this plus the other thing you can't evaluate is how down are the players being beaten badly now mentally are they just giving up at that time you know you guys forget one thing this coach says i beat oklahoma and yet they got me behind him i'll show him how good i am today well he did that i never felt so sorry for a coach in my life as i did for faust with time running out down on the orange ball but let's turn our attention to this afternoon irv cross is now live at rfk stadium irv what's the weather down there for the washington san francisco game brenton right now is 46 degrees in misty you know the field's in great shape has been covered all week long so it won't be a factor as far as weather is concerned but you know the big story in washington knows whether or not this team is healthy on friday a story was released at art monk their great wide receiver wouldn't play because he had the flu he didn't practice friday he didn't practice saturday but their trainer bumper tires said it was only a 24-hour thing so he will play today how much and how effective it'll be we don't know the good news for the redskins however those if they're all pro tackle joe jacoby will be back in the lineup after being out for a few weeks with a knee injury and the big guy's gonna have a lot of pressure on him today because he's facing a great defensive line in the san francisco 49ers pass protection is critical for the redskins as everybody knows for every football team and last week against pittsburgh he did a pretty good job protecting young schrader you can see here at the lower end of your screen number 57 mike merriweather coming in on a blitz is going to be picked up by griffin the the defensive end moves inside over the center comes up as picked up by the center jeff bostic now watch this play as it develops has an offensive line seals everything off here there's griffin's block giving schrader the time he needs to get the ball away it's a touchdown pass to clinton didier great execution by the redskins but they're going to be under a lot of pressure today brent because they're going to be facing two great defensive linemen joe jacoby at left tackle will be facing dwayne board who's by far i think the best defensive lineman the 49ers have on first and second down situations on third and long situations fred dean will come in off the bench he was a great pass rusher a pass rusher at par excellence everybody talks about the quarterbacking everybody talks about pass protection but i'll tell you today their pressure is going to be on joe jacoby all right irvin of course the redskins need a victory today to remain one game off the pace in the nfc east now in the meantime if the giants get past cleveland they will move back into a first place tie with dallas in that hot race now when the giants celebrated thanksgiving three days ago most of the players kept at least one eye fixed on the cowboys game against st louis a lot of the giants assembled here at the home of defensive end george martin now being tied for first place this late in the year is a rarity for the giants sharing thanksgiving dinner at the martin household is not however it's become a tradition for lawrence taylor and friends every year we have the guys over particularly those that don't have family in the area and it's just been mushrooming over the years to what you see now although the game they watched that day featured the cowboys and st louis cardinals there was no doubt as to who the giants were rooting for the cardinals what team do you want to win all right well he just grew up the right way i won't raise all right we're gonna come back we'll be talking to jimmy brown and also walter payton of the chicago bears and we'll have that in just a moment [Music] at seiko great technology inspires great design steel rods and gleaming hinges for a supple bracelet watch go toe on greytown for the definitive strap watch a second hand on her elegant dress watch water-resistant two very today one diamond and a rich two-tone setting very tonight man invented time seiko perfected it boston you have two more minutes for your choice we still need a linebacker what does the computer say it says check the master file back at the artist the artist atlanta stand by okay we need to line back up if your business's future depends on information and records a haze modem would help it run smarter computer says harness vega unless boston gets boston what's the delay our first commissioner boston selects ortega harpist hey a real sleeper yes to the future with hayes i bought the volkswagen golf for its german engineered handling and performance that's funny i bought the golf for its durability i don't believe this we bought the golfer's space are they crazy we bought the golf for its price golf it's not a car it's a volkswagen i bought a golf and i'm not even in the commercial a performance story from philip 66 subject the environment the fragile the beautiful the irreplaceable how do we help ensure they'll remain part of our environment example this water treatment system made with a phillips plastic that helps keep our rivers clean clear and alive phillips petroleum you'll find performance in everything we do [Music] perhaps the worst blizzard in green bay in the last 25 years you can see they are sweeping off the field now trying to give the packers and the buccaneers just a little room in which to rehearse prior to the game and of course there are the fans in lambeau field huddling in against the cold they're familiar with that meanwhile at the other end of the spectrum the unbeaten bears they got a big one down in red hot miami tomorrow night and they're the talk of the football world this season a short time ago i talked to walter payton in chicago and i asked walter how he feels now that he shares the media attention with some of the younger bear stars probably made it a lot easier for me because uh now you don't have the uh the media blitzing you and asking you the same old questions over and over about how do you do it for so long now they're uh they got a lot of more personalities to deal with and it's fun to see them try to uh detain the refrigerator or deal with jim mcmahon or either steve mcmigles now the refrigerator how do you look at him is he a legitimate force in the backfield or has he become kind of the clown prince of the chicago bears as we watch him score well we wouldn't refer to him as the crown prince the clown prince he's he's an added factor to our offense we get down to the goal line and then what they do is defenses start to shift so if they shift to his side obviously we go the other way if they don't shift to his side we give him the ball and it makes the defense wonder you know how we're going to stop a guy of this size because as you've seen he can not only run the ball in but he can dive over the top if you call that cork over the top can you go unbeaten at this point going undefeated well we're just thinking about winning this one and we feel that we can win this one the games are ahead of us we have to take them as they come ten years from now do you want us to be saying on television that walter payton was the greatest running back of all time i leave that up for the fans because they appreciate it and they and they are the ones who determine because it depends on what one individual thinks if someone thinks that i am then then that's good i appreciate that if they think someone else is you know it it each opinion varies from uh from day to day because who knows within the next two years somebody else might come out they might be talking about bo jackson or this guy from michigan nobody knows well jimmy brown what's your assessment of uh walter payton and his skills that's a great question brent uh you know it's been about 20 years i think you and greek have been calling me up and i'm so happy and very flattered i think the last time was the earl campbell situation when the greek said he was the greatest of all times and i loved daryl and i thought he was fantastic walter is tremendous i love him i love his style he's tough he's a gentleman he played with losers he's playing with a winner he has all the tools at least he's the greatest of his time in other words you think that it's unfair to compare different generations of athletes you think that in your time you were the standout there's no doubt about it but it's impossible to compare you against who walter payton is going against now uh yeah there's no doubt about it i think it's a disservice to guys like oj and gail sears you know walter might even have a question about the bears because most of the running backs use siz as their model so and then dickerson is the greatest uh you know in the league right now so it's complicated we all have attributes and i think we should take out the hands of the writers and and uh even you brent and leave it up to the players we don't have to be the best of all time you know i always defended you until now i mean i think that walter payton has passed over the barrier because the one thing you were you were you had great durability and i think he now has equaled you in that category well there's probably no doubt about it the man is durable he only missed one game i i only i didn't miss any i didn't miss a practice but how do you compare that you know yeah you're right well if you want to do one thing brent uh i'm not playing today but you still have me here so maybe it isn't quite clear yet all right we will continue with the nfl today on cbs in just a moment big fella you got something there [Music] i'm going to give you a choice a fabulous dinner with me or a million dollars of course this isn't just my generosity it's part of canada dry's million-dollar sweepstakes i adore canada dry ginger ale it's deliciously less sweet and who wants to be sweet anyway so have a canada dry ginger ale while you're mulling over this momentous decision me or a million dollars for details see the canada dry joan cullen sweepstakes display in supermarkets most people know you can only buy a curtis mathis at a curtis mathis home entertainment center they know delivery and installation are included and there's a four-year limited warranty on every product but what people don't know is just how long a curtis mathis really lasts oh well time to get another curtis mathis yep for products that last year after year after year this year make it a curtis mathis christmas american-made fashion it matters to me made in the usa the fact is it really matters to me now everything that says american-made style and quality says it proudly [Music] ask for the maid in the usa label because it does matter to all of us you better believe it matters to me [Music] all right greek the browns come in tied with pittsburgh giants need a win to stay up with dallas but the first question is who's going to quarterback cleveland in this game well cleveland has to win to stay up with the steelers kozar took the snap all week brent but the coach last night told a friend of mine that if danielson can throw the ball 30 yards today before game time he will start he's a reliable friend oh yeah he had dinner with him okay but cleveland will shut down the giant run the giants will shut down the cleveland run so that leaves sims to adams to gale breath i like the giant quarterback just a little bit more today and by four points 20 to 16. now san francisco you've been talking about points a lot more lately san francisco comes into washington to play the redskins now you know what i think about the redskins at home i think they're lethal on that field yeah do you remember when washington was 11 point favorite over them in that playoff game and now he's talking about points anyway the 49ers will attack the right corner and washington will a toxin will attack san francisco's left corner but you know what monk has been sick all week i think that clark rice and solomon are a little bit too much for washington brandt although the kids like playing with schrader by the way i'm talking about the washington redskins they go all out for this guy and their special teams have been super i like the 49ers oh do you ever 24-17 now monday night they're going to win it jimmy everybody's talking about this game in the orange bowl the dolphins and the bears can the bears stay unbeaten what do you think about this i'll tell you one thing it's only two to one that the bears don't go unbeaten now i mean every every every game makes it closer and closer this is a game that everybody's talking about defense and everything you know now the miami is vulnerable to a run so peyton will have a big date but you know what the bears are vulnerable remember that thing that you used to say downtown to charlie brown right well this one is going to be to duper downtown and duper will make at least two this is going to be a real high scoring game and you like in the final analysis well just the bears by a touch right now let's take a look and see if you've got any gifts today any underdogs that you like there's one denver upset pittsburgh but you like the next three big philadelphia new england and of course the raiders now the best of the rest well the rams green bay and cincinnati and a couple other games on the schedule this afternoon san diego over buffalo and seattle to win and jimmy you promised me that this week you'd give me the teams that are going to be in the afc playoffs could could we do it next week no now but pittsburgh and cleveland are playing today i'll tell you one thing you've got to give it to pittsburgh in the central division only because of today's game because pittsburgh is favored over denver and cleveland is an underdog to the giants but there are five teams that can finish with 11 and 5. pittsburgh the jets miami denver new england and one other team the raiders and the raiders will definitely be thank you very much and we will continue with the nfl today on cbs in just a moment i can't to some this is boring to others it's exciting to some this is frightening to others it's fun to some this is tiring to others it's challenging to some owning a german road car that can perform like this is an unattainable dream to others it's a volkswagen jetta jetta it's not a car it's a volkswagen i'm dan marino and at christmas time i take care of the hands to take care of me i pass isotoner gloves to the hands that catch my passes and i hand off these custom-fit isotoners to the hands that carry will be their starting quarterback and let's go live to irv at rfk stadium irv brent you know the last time the 49ers played here in the nfc championship game two years ago two controversial penalties late in the game may have cost san francisco a trip to another super bowl at least that's what the 49ers and their fans believe the uproar that day was a reminder of the pressure that comes with the job of officiating in the national football league and last week we took a close-up look at the day-to-day life of a veteran referee morning rita good morning how are you good hi richard morris jorgensen works two full-time jobs morning ida hi colleen when he wears pinstripes he's president of the commercial bank of champaign in illinois but when he puts on zebra stripes he's an nfl referee three fouls on the defense personal file defense accepted holding defense decline offsides defense decline half the distance first stop against offense 63 right exactly for nfl referees the game goes on long after the final gun is that the three coming at once great okay john you go first that's a holding is that yours okay ict lead contact illegal contact and that's at 8 30 and against detroit's number i didn't get a number oh boy no number and uh which one did they accept every recorded call is discussed then transcribed to jorgensen's official game report for the league office there jorgensen's report provides a framework for the most comprehensive analysis in sports i don't think any professional sport trains and or evaluates their men anywhere near the way the people the national football league trains its officials [Music] when i analyze the film i see if those calls that i made were properly done or properly called if they don't call something that should have been called i bring that to their attention too so that they're graded on everything that they do on the next play we have three fouls offside by the defensive linebacker the following weekend evaluations and game films are in jorgensen's hands and he and his crew will work late saturday night analyzing their previous week's performance we come together each week for 20 weeks during the season we often go to church together we eat our meals together during that time we're usually talking football preparing for the game we'll live and die with each other you depend on each other each person has to do his job jorgensen and his crew attend to an assortment of vital pregame chores [Music] tv time out i'll point to the ground that means i'm acknowledging you and you can have it at the next opportunity the pa system testing one two three four okay by game time all three teams involved in the contest are feeling the pressure we certainly do we're seven men against the world out there every sunday afternoon let's have a good one man courage concentration mature judgment slow whistle have a good time [Music] dick jorgensen's the referee of today's game and he'd probably like to get through it without anybody knowing they were ever here all right er thank you very much an official is only as good as his last call and we will continue with the nfl today on cbs in just a moment last fall i did myself a big favor i winterized with premium xerix antifreeze just a 50 50 mix of xe-rex and water protects against freeze-ups down to 34 below z-rex don't face winner without it from conoco seiko car quest 12 gifts of christmas sale conquest the right place a touch of excitement effective today i've resigned as a head football coach and general manager than you all in saints last monday bond phillips five-year association with the new orleans saints came to a close he'd always been one of the nfl's most colorful figures dating back to his days as head coach of the houston oilers [Applause] [Music] mixing innovative plays like the bamarooski with a coaching style that was pure texan phillips captivated the entire city of houston quickly turning the oilers from also rains into perennial playoff contenders [Music] unfortunately bum could not do the same in new orleans the saints never finished over 500 in phillips five years here and he left a frustrated man the one thing he is happy about is that the head coaching job remains in the family bomb son wade takes over but he'll have his hands full with the explosive rams last week ron brown returned two kickoffs for touchdowns eric dickerson rushed for 150 yards today from new orleans it's the first place rams trying to spoil the coaching debut of wade phillips hi everyone they expect only 50 000 in the superdome here this afternoon it's a lovely day outdoors in new orleans and you can see that the rams have their destiny in their own hands their magic number is three they could win the division by winning three out of four the saints are out of it with a record of four and eight the first time these two teams met 28 to 10 was the final score dave wilson was the saints quarterback he was sacked nine times by the rams today it's bobby a bear at the quarterback position we'll see what happens tram what does happen when you change coaches in midstream as the saints have done jack i'm going to tell you i think they're going to have two coin tosses here this afternoon one to determine who's going to kick or receive and the other one to determine how the saints are going to play i've been involved in several of these situations when i was coaching kansas city and the teams that we played against were always very very emotionally involved in the game but they were not able to sustain that emotion i think the question this afternoon is going to be how long can the emotional new orleans saints sustained that emotion this afternoon there is wade phillips he is the new head coach of the new orleans saints and will be for the final four games of the year what will happen after that why nobody knows but you seem to think the chances are slim for him to continue on there's john robinson he's never lost to new orleans he was in a good mood last night he really thinks that his team is playing very very well and perking right along there's morton anderson he will kick it off and we may get an explosive start to this game as ron brown is back to receive it and back with him is charles white he became the third player in nfl history to return two kickoffs for a touchdown in one game [Applause] and away we go and it heads for brown on the goal line this would be 100 yards if he goes all the way but he doesn't what a big hit and that'll help new orleans with a sensational stop at the 16-yard line by the new orleans brett mexi a defensive back here's the lineup for the rams peter brock back at the controls eric dickerson the running back the up back to you back is tony hunter also known as a tight end henry allard and ron brown are the wide receivers since uh dennis harra came back he had been injured this offensive line has been perking irv panky kent hill doug smith dennis herrera jackie slater and david hill and we'll see hill lined up in the backfield a few times today and he is on a wing right now from the 16 hill comes in motion mr dickerson he got three maybe four and the tackler was bruce clark the left hand along with jim wilkes the middle man there the front three is the 300 pounder tony elliott and the linebackers ricky jackson a favorite here in new orleans glenn redd the rookie from southern cal jack del rio and james haynes the other linebacker dave weimer and johnny poe are on the corners frank watlett and terry hogue are the safety men for the saints it is second down and eighth split back to see david hill lined up in the backfield as he was last week [Applause] and that is short of a first down as the ball was caught and held on to by brown it'll be third down hank jack you know the rams basically are a one-back formation set team meaning that eric dickerson is usually back there about seven or eight yards and they feature him from a running standpoint a great deal to start this game they started with a split backfield meaning that there's two running backs one of whom is david hill they're fine tight end number 81. it is third down and four [Applause] and barry redden's in the backfield you didn't get very much time henry watch at the left of your screen number 73 getting penetration getting penetration and then comes back around the block and uh frank warren number 73 makes the sound and there is dale hatcher the rookie from clemson who's done tremendous work and willie tullis is the safety man he's driven all the way back to his 22-yard line and he gets away and back to the 30. that's an exciting kick return for the rams down field first was jerry gray but he let his man loose and mark jerome made the tackle bobby eyre bear goes to work earl campbell and wayne wilson the running backs the wide receivers are eric martin and eugene goodloe and up front jim rourke brad edelman steve court the center ralph williams stan brock and hobie printer used to play for john robinson at southern cal is the tight end there was a 60-yard punt a five-yard return to new orleans i think we're going to see a lot of high formation they start with the eye formation if they succeed with this jack we'll see a lot of it this afternoon along with play action passes and a good run of six yards and jim collins the linebacker and the number one tackler on the rams leading tackler made the hit and stop campbell carried the ball last week 36 times and really had his best game as a new orleans saint player i asked him about how many times he would like to carry the ball he said well very frankly i really don't get warmed up until i carry the ball about 20 times and he's averaged 10 times a game so far this season which is not up to par second down and four you see how deep campbell is he's seven yards hey bear bears it out there it is and broken up at the last minute a wonderful defensive play in the pass intended for good low and leroy irvin just got there in time good thing he can run hank yeah he's got great recovery speed watch this watch leroy irving number 47 and the ball is thrown a little bit too short see he has to stop to try to come back for the ball in the meantime uh leroy irvine number 47 is able to bat the ball down and it falls incomplete jerry gray and vince newsom check into the rams backfield and gary jeter is in on the front line third and four the rams play an awful lot of zone defense and so as a result it's very difficult to lick them deep very often they have a four-man front in a five-man rush and the pass is caught and that's the first down across the 40. it was caught by tyrone anthony over the coverage of vince newsome first down here's the rams defense for you three-man front ordinarily doug reed charlie dijonai and reggie doss the good linebackers mel owens karl ekern jim collins and mike wilshere the leading sacker on the team on the corners gary green and leroy irvin safety men nolan cromwell johnny johnson first down at the new orleans 41. that's the first first down of the game [Music] timeout call by hey bear well i guess the rams anticipated what a bear was going to call and so he expends one of his timeouts [Applause] burger king now begins a nationwide search for herb the one man who's never tasted a burger king burger herb was never what you'd call normal herb has never learned to love flame broiling instead of frying herb was unusual herb has never enjoyed this sizzling whopper put yourself together herb wherever you are start asking yourself aren't you hungry for burger king herb i own a pc and a pcr a condo on the beach and my own company but i don't own a car i lease with gmac for me leasing was smarter than gmac leasing only at your gm dealer for you it just might be smarter than buying give me something warm for christmas only zales could kindle such fire with 25 off all our diamond solitaire pendants and earrings just for christmas so she can have more diamond quarter carat earrings for 229 a half carat pendant for 8.49 25 off diamonds from zales jewelers leading with style sails you're so hot hank why the timeout by a bear i can't understand why you call timeout because they're in a double tight end situation and which means they'll have a hat on everybody across the line of scrimmage there's only four guys back there at secondary i don't know what that why it could have been a problem and why he would waste a timeout this early in the game unless he had something unusual well that could be but i don't know what he could have called against a basic vanilla 3-4 alignment good luck comes to the right saints upon only two of their last 11 against teams in their division [Music] motion by tice the other tight end and a first down run he came across midfield boy got good blocking from wilson and others and johnny johnson made the stop [Applause] just a simple pitch number 82 is in motion to the right side gets a good block of the linebacker campbell is so good at uh cutting back and look what he did to the defensive back he bounced right off of him and kept going for a big gain on the first down great running on the part of earl campbell and on first down two tight ends both to the left side tights in motion now here comes campbell to the other side and he is bound after about a three-yard run to the ram 46. you know talking to wade phillips at practice yesterday and the day before one thing was very obvious that he was gonna you know most people think when a coaching change is made that you're gonna add a lot of things the smart coaches in this situation reduce the number of things they want to do to make sure they don't make mistakes and overburden the offensive team that's exactly what they've done they said let's take a look at what we do best and let's get a lot of repetitions from that formation that's why they're using the eye formation this early and they'll stay with it as long as they continue to have success you notice that wade wasn't chewing tobacco he doesn't shoot did he call timeout again he did yes he did bobby bear you must think this is a a day when you get extra timeouts he calls his second timeout and it was second down and seven coming up and why he would do that i don't know well the only other thing that could be a possibility jack is that the signal signaling the plays from the sideline and he doesn't he's got a new coordinator calling the play from the sideline and there could be a little bit of confusion from that standpoint maybe that's the reason and what it points out more than anything of course is that it isn't that easy that's right you're exactly right particularly with those signals from the sideline they work long and hard to coordinate and they try to they try so hard to deceive the opposition by a great variety of signals but sometimes they fool themselves there's the saints mascot this stadium seats 72 000 they have about 50 000. paul mcfadden has a field goal and the eagles leave minnesota by the score of three to nothing in the first quarter and cincinnati goes out in front kennebru with touchdown they lead houston seven nothing in the first quarter we'll have quite a few scores of other games to pass along to you yeah this place is in disarray down here uh henry there's a sign down below by the way that says thanksgram come on down you're the new head coach i didn't know my mother was there she is her birthday all right my mother's birthday number 84 today i think a lot of these signs here's another come back hank so i want to wish my mother a happy birthday what's her name happy 84 nelly happy anniversary mom for a happy birthday mom 84. who dad say they're going to coach the saints that used to be a big saying down here that's died out who dads say they're going to beat the saints but here we have second and seven and we get back to work in the first quarter no score wilson is the up back he's a devastating blocker [Music] goodloe has it the defensive man fell down gary green lost his footing in a 16-yard gain in a first down to good luck good low is coming off the ball on the right side and watch gary green number 27. he's got outside leverage meaning that he's playing on the outside of the receiver he's got his knees turned to the inside which makes it impossible for him to cover an outside pattern he tries to recover slips and falls and good low makes the catch and the first down at the 28 of los angeles and this is a pretty good drive now for the saints nice in motion and a give to wilson a fake toss and a give to the fullback and he works very hard and gets about two and a half yards pretty good timing on that play wasn't it yes it was it was a fake pitch to campbell and then they gave it to wayne wilson number 30 but they played it very well especially mel owens number 58 the linebacker on the inside on the outside and charlie d journey who is the nose guy so it's second down coming up second and seven in the first quarter we have 10 minutes left to play and there is no score now wilson is on a wing that's a little different formation they got a they got a one-on-one on the left side let's see if they try to do something back to the left side he's looking back there but he throws inside and he is not keeping up for a first down well maybe he did have forward progress down near the 18-yard line the ball was caught by campbell that doesn't happen very often it's only the second pass that he has caught this year kyle eckern made the tackle it's a yard short of a first down they had a triple wing formation meaning they had three people on the right side of the tight end with including the tight end play action fake they faked a campbell and he cruises on the inside watch look inside he cruises and stops in the middle area and makes the catch for a very close play to a first down third down and a half a yard ocean by the third tight end and a first down run by campbell and the ball came loose but it had been whistled dead still belongs to the saints first down tackle reggie doss karl licker campbell running in very inspired [Applause] fashion we'll show you that play again and hank will do a little artwork for you watch the left tackle rorick number 70. watch the good takeoff here watch the good block at the point of attack there he is gets an inside position on reggie doss dos reaches over the top but it was too late and he makes the necessary yardage for the first down back to live action at the 17. and a delay to wilson very good work was done by reggie dawes coming around from the backside they ran that counter play that time normally you run the counter play to the tailback in this particular case they ran the same counter play with the same blocking to wayne wilson who was in front of the fullback last week they ran it for a big touchdown about 40 some yards this time they tried again and the ram defense held very well no gain on that play still second and ten and we have 7 45 left in the quarter 11th play of the drive and a sack back at the 25. and it was gary jeter getting in there gary jeter number 77 from the right of our screen here play action fake but look at jeter coming in around the outside and makes the sack on bobby a bear number number three and i asked a bear why do you wear number three he said well very frankly i think a single digit number makes me look a little taller and he's 6'4 already it's third down and long third and 18. he couldn't find anybody and he lost five more and that really hurts the field goal position and it was shawn miller number 98 who finally got to him after quite a period of time i think i think on that particular situation jack the young quarterback a bear was looking and anticipating for man for man coverage he didn't get it he got a zone i think it confused him and as a result he wound up getting a sack and we have a field goal tribe by martin anderson of 47 yards and incidentally i don't know where there's a better young kicker in the national football league than hogenberg morton snap it and guido merkins will hold it low snap and markings got it down and it's good good job by edo merkins now we have 6 51 left in the first quarter and the underdog saints break on top three nothings for the average hunter the five dollar mercury links has plenty of room and it's only 29.95 a day and budge that budget as another girl one that's more my style the lincoln town car look at this headroom and even first big shots like badge at small price only 39.95 a day get the economy of luxury or the luxury of economy go to budget and say there's a group of the offensive players the offensive line of the saints and they helped get three points good job by merkins in getting the ball upright for anderson to kick now anderson will kick it again to ron brown or charles white brad edelman number 63 we saw just a moment ago he's added a great dimension to the offensive line he's been hurt on and off but he is really one of the very best lineman in the national football league used to be his center now he's playing guard and he's back in there today [Music] mr brown from the forum he can fly again he had a big hit along the sideline by bobby fowler who is a running back number 43. coming up next today here on cbs the 49ers against the redskins at rfk stadium and hank everybody i talked to seems to agree that whoever loses this game will not be there for post-season play it's the bye-bye blues they got to win this one and one who doesn't they're out and schroeder has done a good job of picking up those redskins you'll have a tough test today the ball is at the rams 27. they got some running room over to the left side here they come and vickerson is good for only about three yards and driven back by glenn redd the inside linebacker number 58. they got some help let's watch red go to work here we see glenn red number 58 watch him pursue and make a play here a pitch to the left side of the offensive formation red is going to his right watch him play off the block watch him play off the block of panky and he gets right in there in good position and makes the tackle a great play by glenn redd is playing the left tackle spot rather than bill payne first down throw to the tight end tony hunter or the u-back as they call him that's the first first down of the day for the rams at their 38. tackled by ricky jackson and glenn redd dieter brock stays in the pocket well good protection five-step drop hangs in here tough and look at tony hunter makes a curl to the outside and is tackled again by glenn redd number 58 the inside linebacker pretty good fastball from brock wasn't it yes he got a little shot as he threw the ball so wonder he threw it so well first down up there brown is to the right along with henry now they got a different defensive alignment here jack something a little different [Applause] and jack del rio got in there number 50 had some help it's a version i think jack is a version of the chicago bear defense the 46. del del rio is the middle linebacker and he's very deep [Applause] watch what's the inside people in here getting penetration and del rio is back in the middle of the defensive formation you'll see what happens here let's take a look they're all tight on the inside inside and there's del rio coming from the outside blitzing and making a play on dieter brock three linebackers were there red del flags are down all over the place that's the first flag of the day jerry seaman paul's motion against barry redden he started it all you have a score of that illegal motion number 72 offense penalty decline third down ken hill was called very important game cleveland at the giants and joe morris gets a touchdown in the first quarter and the giants lead seven to nothing [Applause] third down 15. now they got a four-man line they're changing the alignment quite a bit and i think it's confusing the rams a little bit first in there was james gethers together's 97. what's uh what's shaking up the rams here hank well they normally see a three-man line now they're seeing a four-man line for lyman here's gathers right here at the right in position the linebacker is right up in tight ricky jackson who normally is on the outside and and that's the problem they created now watch gathers number 97 shed the block of panky and comes out back from the back side and and puts a sack on dieter brock and now here is the punt to willie tullis and he is out near his 34-yard line these saints had quite a bit of emotion going for them there was a 51-yard punt a 10-yard return the tackle by jim laughlin and the ball is at the saints 34. it's a lot for governments four games at the beginning of the season as you used to next saturday on cbs kansas and north carolina state yeah they're two hot teams and they anticipate great seasons danny manning of the jayhawks is an outstanding player chris washburn is one of the stars of the north carolina state team the wolf pack and that's next saturday at 12 30 eastern here on cbs [Applause] from the 34-yard line a bear used to be in the united states football league swings it out here to campbell that's the second pass he's caught today and a touchdown saving tackle by nolan cromwell here's a replay of that a screen to earl campbell they don't expect him to catch passes they expect him to run they're crossing them up a little bit watch watch watch old campbell out here on the left of your screen makes the catch and he's very decisive a good block out in front and he goes right down the sideline breaks a tackle and is finally tackled there by number 21. nolan cromwell but it looked like he was going to go all the way in and change the scoreboard ralph williams and steve court really made great blocks on the play yeah williams the right guard in court the center they sprung them loose to the 27. hey the rams are tilting a little bit here aren't they and a very good tackle by reed thank you i can i can lead you into saying something that the people in los angeles probably won't like but doug reed is probably playing better than [Applause] jack youngblood youngblood was playing that's right i think that's understandable we talked about that yesterday but uh you know youngblood had a great great career but there comes a time where you lose your efficiency and as a result reed came in at a good time and he's playing terrifically well at the left-hand position ball's at the 30 and it's second and 13. and jeter are up front [Music] four-man line whoa trying to get it to the tight end to john tice incomplete covering johnny johnson let's go to brent mussberger for an update in new york well jack we've got a couple of updates the browns have just tied the giants at seven the eagles have a ten point lead on the bikes here's the touchdown pass and that one goes deworsky to spagnola let's go back to jack and hank we knew hank that those giants were going to have their hands full with cleveland didn't we yeah they're a very good team defensively and they're playing much much better offensively four-man line now by the rams third and thirteen they show the blitz with wiltshire he's not coming however and a swing pass out here to anthony rams recover very well again of five fourth down sean miller the tackle there again i think a bear was trying with a spread formation it was they were trying to get uh one for one coverage and they wound up with zone and wisely here he is look at the rush look at the rush dumps the ball off to the right side to anthony and uh he's finally tackled there but doesn't make nearly enough yardage for the first down but gets them a little closer for the field goal attempt anderson kicked one of 47 yards earlier and this is going to be 42 yards watch he doesn't get very much follow through he kind of punches the ball see how he punches it but he's got to eat in a row he has eight in a row now two of them today it's six to nothing with 125 left in the first quarter and the rams are fortunate company in fact you're looking my last words were that the rams were fortunate that they're only trailing by six at this point 125 left in the first quarter here is anderson kicking off to brown how about total offense jack la's got four yards of total offense new orleans 77. saints have five first downs and rams only one well ron brown probably will down if he does it'll come out to the 20-yard line with 119 left in the first quarter and it gives us a chance to tell you about some scores of other games as brent musburger just told you pastor warski to spagnola 10 to nothing philadelphia second quarter over the vikings and the cleveland browns on a run by kevin mack have tied the giants 7-7 in the first quarter joe morris had scored denver and pittsburgh scoreless into the second quarter in a very important game cincinnati has doubled their lead over houston 14-0 first quarter brock trying to get the rams rolling is the up back give to the fullback barry redden gets only two second and eighth tony elliott number 99 who weighs 300 pounds led the charge along with bruce clark number 75. they have some big people up front some more scores for you scoreless second quarter tampa bay and green bay and new england in indianapolis 7-7 first quarter an extremely important game for new england with tony eason playing quarterback second and eighth red mountain front and a first down run by dickerson he ran completely away from where barry redden was blocking i think the that's the great thing about the i formation jack you're about seven yards deep you have a great opportunity to see what's happening here's a replay from ground level and look at the key block has to be the block of the tight end david hill number 81 look at the block he gets on a linebacker providing eric dickerson number 29 with the opportunity to cut back and that's what's so great about the i formation to take advantage of teams that over pursue looker dickerson came off the field he hates this astro dirt doesn't he yeah he doesn't like it very much he said he feels like he's an old man when he walks onto the astroturf and a whistle and let's see what happened it was not the 32nd clock was the end of the first quarter that's what it was and a bit of a problem for the rams who trail by the score of six to nothing with dickerson hurt is sponsored by miller beer miller made the american way since 1855 and by the sperry corporation [Music] eric dickerson just carried for a first down to the 32. he's prancing around pretty well now very redness in there in a spot let's see what happened to him hank yeah i think you'll see here as he goes through watch jack del rio watches his right foot is planted del rio gets a shot at it and i think that's what created the momentary sting to that right ankle first down with ridden in there at the 32. he's no slouchy he picked up five ricky jackson number 57. i know you're a big admirer of ricky jackson yeah he is he's really a great player a dominant player i don't think he plays nearly as well when there's a tight end on his side as he does when he's on the free and watch watch david hill number 81 look at him he skates with him and gets him out of the play and finally ricky comes back from the back side and makes the tackle but after not until after he makes a nice gain in the play of about six yards dickerson's back in there second and five actually a delay to dickerson first half well his ankle is okay out to the 45 this part into the play with the tackle yeah they say he might have a slight sprain but certainly didn't look like he had any kind of a problem running on that last play which was a counter play and i think jack the way the defense of the new orleans saints is playing they're reacting and pursuing extremely well i think some kind of misdirection or in a reverse or reverse somewhere as they get better field position could be very appropriate because they're chasing very well close up look at peter brock [Applause] and a toss to dickerson only a couple as you say mr strand they're really coming up dave weimer from the corner that time number 44. i was talking to henry ellard yesterday he said lamer really difficult to get away from when he is jamming at the line of scrimmage yeah he's strong and has good technique he's a very good defensive back i think most most people in the league feel that he would be really a fantastic strong safety or a weak safety but he's been playing a corner and playing it very well i think the other thing could be very appropriate jack would be an option pass with eric dickerson throwing the option pass down here about the 40-yard line once they hit that area ellard in motion second and eight brock's going to throw it himself swings it out here and away from ready [Applause] he's the backup to dickerson but he's uh he'd be the regular for a lot of football teams wouldn't it yes he would be he needed an extension there's uh bobby eber again number three number three warming up on the sidelines he's a cajun unique yes he is they love him down here played at louisiana tech and all you have to do is ask about his ancestry boy he'll give you a long dissertation he knows it all very impressed with that is the extra defensive back on third and eight something in the middle would be appropriate if they can get the ball there's the time in there ellard can't get loose that was weimer running with him a little bit of bumping but no flags terry hogg was also helping on the inside yeah it looked like the middle was wide open jack they were in a double zone meaning that the two defensive backs were deep are taking and playing a half of the field which means the middle is wide open he didn't look in the middle area however try to get the ball outside it was too long dale hatcher tells me that when he was a rookie of clemson he kicked the ball and hit the gondola here at the top of the superdome but they've since raised it it's impossible to do it now willie tullis is the punt return man not his fair catch is called for fellas had a tough time catching it at the 19-yard line that was a 34-yard punt no return sometimes it's difficult to field punts here in this superdome the ball has to go through the lights [Applause] next saturday it will be the 86th meeting army and navy the cadets and midshipmen it never fails to be a good game and even when the teams weren't very good but now they are good in fact the air force academy army and navy have all played very well this year you see it on cbs and remember the great coaches earl red blake and eddie erlatz who used to coach the naval academy big run by campbell about eight yards nolan cromwell had the tough job of tackling him dambo weighs 2 33. here's a replay watch to the right of your screen look at wilshere coming being blocked to the outside a cut back to the inside by campbell and that's again as i mentioned earlier the great thing about the i formation it's great against teams of teams that over pursue and when you have a great back like earl campbell he sees it's got great eyes and takes advantage of that over pursuit john robinson said yesterday i think they'll try to take it and ram it right at us either that or get very tricky but it's quite basic here's campbell and let's see what kind of forward progress they give i would say it is going to be a first down carl eckern made the tackle scores of other games cincinnati's having a good time osias in a pass to brooks 21 to nothing in the second quarter over houston and cleveland goes ahead of the giants they liked that score in the dallas area 14 to seven mack had a touchdown now bainer goes over from two yards out and one more for you pittsburgh first to score they lead denver three to nothing tough to beat at home are those steelers al davis has to have a big smile on his face and there's jackie slater being worked on with some of his equipment meanwhile it's third down in inches could be a quarterback snake if his only inches yeah he's a big kid and he gets he gets the first down a barrier doesn't look like it on the cameras here but he is big he's 6'4 215. dennis harrison made the tackle he reminds me an awful lot physically of the great quarterback we used to have at notre dame when i was there george iso george was big and strong and was built the same way and a bear the first time i saw him the other day friday at practice it reminded me immediately of george eiser he has a lot of weight in his leg as the ball is out to the 31. grahams can't get rolling here either offensively or defensive pass caught by tice and though it's modest yards it's a gain of four let's go to brent mussberger in new york for an nfl update [Applause] well jack and hank well i'm glad i'm not there in green bay you can say that for me too jack say it again it's beautiful here in the dome it's second down and six nice in motion and a toss and campbell gets a couple it'll be third down in about four you know i talked to stan brock the other day the fine offensive tackle for the new orleans saints number 67. asked him about the upcoming game he said coach i guarantee you we're going to win the game we're going to play well and we're going to play mashball i said mashball what is that he said well we're just going to line up and get a hat on everybody and fight him individually and win the war up front so far that's exactly what they're doing brock's big enough to fight he's 288 6-6 third down coming up and four we got a four-man line now talking about the rams six-man rush and it is good low took it away from leroy irvin 25-yard gain it was buck bump and run that time jack meaning that the defensive back was right on the line of scrimmage with the receiver in this case good low watch him watch irvin he makes a move he gives him a little jam but loses him as he tries to catch up the ball is underthrown and he reaches back and makes the catch a great great play ready by gene goodlow number 88 and gary jeter blasted a bear the quarterback just when he turned the ball loose you have to admire the a bear kid because that was evidently an automatic he changed the play at the line of scrimmage when he saw the bump and run first down at the rams 38. sideline and it is hot and the play is still alive and a first down catch by goodloe now he stepped he stepped back out of bounds where no he did not it's at the 20. 18-yard gain [Applause] watch your right at your screen watch good luck come off the ball look at the big cushion by gary green number 27 and now he was he's backing up he breaks out in front the ball he comes back for the ball a little bit green is very very close to making a play gets there just a moment too late and goodloe makes the catch and dropped the ball got it cromwell came up and made the hit at the 20 first down and the rams already trailing six to nothing 809 left in the half nice in motion again and a blast by campbell four two or three before collins tackled him number 50. wayne wilson number 30 got a good block leading the play eric martin is the other wide receiver for the rams when they use two they've been using uh the two tight ends and they tell me that martin is the number two receiver only because they don't have a number one receipt good low comes closest to it hey there once a little quiet here second down and eight [Music] wilson incomplete i think a bear is being a little confused i think he really thinks they're going to be in single coverage down here that time jack they were in double zone again meaning the two safeties again have the half of the field and as a result you can't throw the ball man for man and he was a little confused tried to dump it off to the back and threw it way over the top and it falls incomplete well our old friend tony franklin has kicked a field goal and new england leads indianapolis ten to seven in the second quarter and uh it's third and eight right here four down lineman for the rams including jeter third and eight effective roll and they almost throw it into the arms of the defensive back as he tried to get into eric martin the rookie coming up very strongly was gary green i thought the move uh to roll and move the pocket was very good that time but it looked like a bear was a little confused when he got there you could see him do a little tap dance he was anytime a quarterback starts to move those feet before he throws the ball you know he's a little bit confused and that time he tries to force the ball right into coverage and almost had it intercepted well morton anderson is kicked 22 out of 26 and eight in a row 47 and 42 yards today and this is a 35 yard try i asked him who his idol was and he said john stenner 35 yards 3 out of 3 for martin anderson this is getting serious as far as the rams are concerned [Applause] this franchise started in 67 and the coaches spears jd roberts north hefferly our buddy hank stram dick nolan stan fell bum phillips and now wade and who's next a lot of confusion down here and there is wade phillips his team and anderson are kicking off and the rams could really use something from either charles white or ron brown another booming kick by anderson another touchback they're doing a lot of things right aren't they hank yeah they are and you talk about morton you know he's he's got a record along with his pal brian hanson the the punter and they've got it they call it take it to the top and you know it's by kicks recording yeah we're trying to bring ourselves to play it here we don't have quite the gumption yet we may work it up [Music] that's five touchback kicks for anderson in the last two games and he's three out of three in field goals and time for the rams to do something henry trying to win their tenth game of the year dickerson a setback first down pass sideline and uh any good i think he said it is at the 32. neither official was right on top of the play willie tullis was there defensively let's watch the feet watch ellard break to the outside he has to wait for the ball because he's afraid of going out of bounds tell us good call yeah that's a good call he's got both feet and bounds and it's a first intense situation i think i think we have to see the rams throw the ball a lot more on first and ten jack i don't think they can keep smashing it at him the way the defense of the new orleans saints is playing they got to pump it up and throw it here comes dickerson what a big hole and out to the 45 and i bet the los angeles fans hank as frank watlin made the tackle 13-yard gain now let's talk about this play first it's a counter play with the left guard ken hill and panky pulling but the play was designed to go outside but eric dickerson saw the play open up inside and took advantage of it and that's the great thing about a great back like dickerson he takes what he sees and gets the most out of the play which he did there brown left ellard right dickerson left two yards i bet the fans in los angeles are wondering about bobby duckworth he missed the team plane yesterday and he was still there's john robinson he was duckworth was still trying to get to the park this morning yeah when i talked to the coaches this morning they said that they thought he would be here but they haven't had any word they just expected it to be here but he missed the plane yesterday and nobody knows what happened i don't know you know they put the vanishing cream on he was gone they hadn't heard from him they didn't know where he was so there's a problem the rams are dealing with today it's second and eight somewhere along the line jack they gotta run a reverse or more misdirection ricky jackson and others were in there there's ricky that's the fourth sack on peter brock today ricky jackson said yesterday he said this has been the best week of practice we have had in five years that i've been here he said i guarantee we're relaxed we're loose we're gonna change the pace a little bit here's jackson coming on the inside on a stunt on the inside of hill as he releases and there he gets penetration and makes a sack on dieter brock but going back to ricky jackson he said that he felt they were going to play well they're going to do a lot of things differently be more aggressive and they certainly have been doing that so far they run the play to redden on third down and long and they'll have to punt tony elliot the nose guard held sway number 99. now the fans are alive hank and there's another thing that ran to let the battle see the team started out emotionally to begin with see the team was very emotional the fans were kind of suspect they didn't know what to expect now they're in the game and i think somewhere along the line here soon the rams have to take that emotion out of the game of the new orleans saints whether they can do this what a big punt by hatcher and tulis will wisely let it go but it's down by the rams with terrific punt coverage frequently on a long punt like daddy out kicks the coverage but vince newson downed it after a 55-yard punt at the new orleans three-yard line maybe this will help the raiders on june 8th alongside linebacker ricky jackson they love him here hank well and justifiably so he's played very very well the five years he's been here and hasn't missed it down and the great thing about him is they're using him in a variety of positions now they're using him in the middle some on the outside and he's going to get a lot more sacks here's a special studio guess next week john madden i tell you he'll have a lot more fun in the studio because there's a lot more room for him to swing those arms in the studio than there isn't a press box he's dangerous in a booth but he'll be there with uh brent mussberger next week on the nfl today check your local listing for the starting time now next sunday dallas may go into cincinnati with a one-game lead in the nfc east they're winning today or they won on thursday and the giants are losing today and also washington a key game in philadelphia some attractive games next sunday uh-oh they're gonna call holding on larry hardy the tight end number 87. he is the reason why campbell ran it out am i right jerry salmon yeah hardy was in motion to the left side and got a half nelson on the linebacker well he didn't give us the number but i i saw the flag come down when hardy bulldogged his man let's watch the replay and watch 87. there's 87 coming out number 87. he's got a he's got a well they only lose half the distance absolutely and it's accepted of course leroy irvin was covering goodloe and just got his hand in there and knocked it out the ball had been underthrown i'm surprised that they would be in man for man coverage down in this area of the field because you know if you get man for man coverage you're going to try to throw the ball up on top you normally don't have any help from the inside and this play should have been a reception here's the isolation look at that [Applause] they just showed a replay of it up here on the board and the fans thought there was interference there's a bear's reaction he's demonstrative isn't he yeah he is and you like to see that in the young quarterback a lot of enthusiasm second down and 11. i said to campbell the other day i said earl how much longer do you want to play so three years i love to play three years and i like to finish my career right here but he was very enthusiastic about playing and and i think he felt good about himself the way he ran last week and again it goes back to what i said earlier you know he's only averaged nine or ten carries all season long a great running back like campbell has to carry the ball 25 30 35 times a game to be effective and last week was a great demonstration of that third and seven try it again and overthrown this time and once again leroy irvin sprinting right alongside eugene goodloe fourth down and the rams will get the ball in good shape great illustration of the kind of confidence the coaches have on their defensive backs especially the corners to put him in a one-on-one situation on both occasions in that situation both of them are very good now we're gonna have brian hanson punting for the very first time today and the number one punt return man in football standing at midfield henry ellard we saw his uh touchdown return against the eagles earlier this year see if the rams come after averaging 42 yards a kick as long as 58 no blocks oh ellard's going to run this one back a few yards strong hit near the 40. you're right it was a few yards coverage got down there pretty well and the tackle was made by brett maxie number 39 after a 42-yard punt coming up later today on cbs the 49ers have traveled to the east coast on rfk stadium and play the redskins and i really think it is safe to say whoever loses that one will not be in post-season play we know the ram fans are rooting for [Applause] what's the best starting position for the rams now they get one-on-one coverage on the outside he's got plenty of time on the 32nd clock brock changes the play somebody was offside clark was offside the defensive left in number 75 unless an offensive lineman made him move but i think it was clark uh 75. we'll see what they call there was mass confusion then he might have been drawn offside we'll see what he calls illegal motion right guard all right that's who it was that's why he was offside it was dennis herrera number 60. a lot of noise and that helped to bring about the penalty i'm sure watch hera number 60 the right guard come on move dennis move yeah he did just a fraction before the ball was snapped you made him do it gotta talk to him a little bit encourage him to move 339 left in the half one on one on the left side let's see if he does business over there nope vickerson gets four frank watler came up very strongly to make the tackle you know i think it's very important when you have one for one coverage you're only going to get a chance to get involved in about 10 big plays in a game and usually against man for man coverage jack i think you know we always felt that if we could hit three of those ten well that was 21 points but you had to you had to challenge it right now there's been several occasions where they've had one-for-one coverage and they haven't challenged it two tight ends hunter and hill saints recovered very well and it brings about third down and four more can't stream ken hill really got a great block on the outside number 72 to enable eric dickerson number 29 to cut inside and make some yardage on the play they had a scream forming to the right and they threw the screen back to the left and water led and hold the safety men were there yeah they just tried to read a little bit they had a double screen and as you mentioned jack they fake one way and throw the screen together the score here is nine to nothing we have 225 left in the half on third down the rams are over four trying to make a first step more defensive lineman in the game and willie tell us the extra back third and four good strong arm and a good strong run and a first down down to the 20-yard line but barry redden who caught the ball bruce clark to tackle a 15-yard gain big play [Music] here we see the replay of it look at the stunning inside but look at brock he hangs in here tough in the pocket and throws to the outside to barry redden makes the catch and a great block out front by ken hill [Applause] [Music] mcdonald's rams should throw the ball a little bit more on first and ten so far they've had the ball on 10 times on first and ten they've only passed it twice and they've run eight times i think they have to change that ratio a little bit as they go along first down at the 20 with two minutes left in the half the rams have been blanked they might be a little close here jack on the 20-yard line but i guarantee you if they pitch the ball to dickerson and he throws an option pass he'll throw a touchdown pass i assure you the way those people are coming up he'll change the scoreboard i don't know whether they have it in or not but he's capable of throwing the ball but that would be an excellent play [Music] rams of course want to cash in on this they've been blank see the last time we talked about jackson jackson the last time was in the middle he was a middle linebacker so they're moving them around a little bit to take advantage of his ability two tight ends and dickerson running oh what a good tackle looked like ricky jackson stuck his nose in there first and brought him to a halt and he got a couple that's it [Applause] saints defense has been pretty good most of the year henry yeah they really have they've done a lot of good things they just haven't been able to generate anything offensively with any degree of consistency and they've lost a lot of offensive linemen have had a lot of injuries and that's really been one of their big problems second down and eights [Applause] and it is incomplete tony hunter had his hands on the ball and johnny po made him cough it up pose number 25. he threw the ball a little bit behind tony hunter that time number 87. let's take a look at it here look at all the time he's got they got three people rushing they got five on three got all the time in the world moves around a little bit throws the ball outside but it's behind hunter uh usually he makes those kind of catches but he didn't on that occasion it is third and eight with 109 left in the hand lily big rush rams have it hunter down to the 10 and it may be a first down i think they're going to say they down the ball back here oh they called it dead back up field wade phillips likes it so that's the fifth sack on the quarterback dieter brock frank warren was the one who was on brock [Applause] watch frank warren number 73 look at the rush on the outside dieter brock tries to get up the field and there's a big mistake by ricky jackson i think it was jackson he should have just fallen on the ball instead of trying to pick it up they'd have had the ball right there had it just been satisfied to have possession of the ball rather than try to pick it up and make a big play 41-yard try by lansford he hasn't missed on the road since the middle of september eight in a row on the road it is good and the rams are on the board nine to three with 27 seconds left in the half well at least from a los angeles viewpoint they got something out of it hank they've got to be missing bobby duckworth here today well i think yeah i think they definitely miss him but they like to use duckworth ready inside the 20 because he's got such a a great advantage physically on the shorter defensive backs but he wouldn't have an effect on the way they're playing right now i don't think jack i think really the rams have to as i mentioned earlier they must throw the ball and be more aggressive on first and ten than they have been so far we ought to cover that story that bobby duckworth missed their team playing yesterday and they don't know where he is they got the posse out looking for him but they haven't found him yet talking to lansford before the game asked him about that barefoot kicking you see he had trouble going from the t in college to the ground level kicking in the pros and he said one day he had a blister on his foot took his shoe off and lo and behold it started to get up in the air for him not his foot but the ball and he broke the he broke the blister he's been kicking ever since by the way he kicked one here with six seconds left a couple of years ago that put the rams in the playoff and knocked the saints out he said the biggest kick of his life yeah remember we did the game yeah it was an excellent it was a very very emotional game for both teams and especially the saints because they had it made and they had an opportunity on about the 35-yard line instead of kicking a field goal they elected the punt punted the ball to the rams and the rams took it right down the field won the game it was a thrilling football game but today it's a little turnabout they have sacked dieterbrock five times when they met the first time why the rams had nine sacks and here is the kick and it heads into the zone dropped and out of the end zone bobbled about by willie tullis it will come out to the 20-yard line coming up at the half brent musberger dick vermeel and their special guest jim brown to bring you up to date with the scores and highlights a feature on quarterback joe montana irf cross has a report from rfk stadium in washington d.c where that big big game the 49ers and the redskins is coming up when we're through here so stay where you are at halftime and then stay where you are after this game is over for the 49ers and the redskins 49ers are rooting for new orleans here today they have the lead and i guess they'll just sit on it hank with 27 seconds ray i would think so yeah i don't think they can afford to make a mistake and provide the rams with an opportunity to get maybe three more points on the board before they go in at halftime and they have only one timeout left so they can't get much done so they give it to campbell and the rams let him ramble up to the 26 and neither team is anxious to stop the clock it would be futile jim collins made the tackle i think the rams have to feel good about the fact that they just won play out of this game as much as the saints have dominated the first half they got to be lucky to feel lucky about what's going on so far well all we've had is field goals in the first half the end of the first half to score 9-3 in favor of new orleans sponsored by toyota who reminds you to get more from life buckle up who could ask for anything more de beers a diamond is forever and by mcdonald's it's a good time for the great taste of mcdonald's yeah welcome back to new york joining me jim brown and dick vermeel and jim what about the los angeles rams i'm really surprised that they're having trouble in this one so far well basically uh they're our running team john robinson is good at the running offense but the passing offense it's a little skeptical dick you've covered several of their games uh you're not that surprised at what's happening to them well they have been struggling offensively and i've done five of their football games for cvs and they've had some problems they're running the ball well passing attack of course they're going to blame dieter brock i like dieter brock i think probably in these few games maybe even the second half here you'll see more diversification in their offense more varieties all right dick and jim let's take everybody to the scoreboard and get them up to date right now the philadelphia eagles they still have a shot at a wild card spot in the playoffs and they're doing a number on the vikings who have lost three in a row now watch ron jaworski here dick go to john spagnola fagnola catches a nice corner pattern here and brent you know jaworski is super efficient inside the 20-yard line throwing the ball jim that eagle defense does a job oh yes but if you'll notice though there was penetration and he actually ran into his own man that's the worst thing can happen to the other running back yeah and mike quick has done it again this is six straight games that he has caught a touchdown pass moments ago jaworski hit him with that pass from nine yards out and now they are running it up it is 20 to nothing the giants and jim brown's former team the cleveland browns in a big one the browns with the lead 21-13 bernie cosar quarterbacking the browns and joe morris has scored on runs of one yard and 58 yards for the giants in that game but they misfired on their second extra point pittsburgh and denver john elway to clint sampson 24 yards the only touchdown in that game so far cincinnati all over houston larry kennebrough has scored three ties for the bengals in that game seven yards one yard and three yards green bay and tampa bay and the story there of course is the weather the worst blizzard in 25 years 1865 in green bay exactly they'd like to get you up in that cold weather because they're used to it and they know it takes away all your skills it becomes accommodated of errors why don't they fumble more than they do i'm amazed that you all play as well as you're doing well because the only thing you're trying to do is not fumble you don't care how what you do you just want to make a mistake well dick what does a coach try to do in that situation stay warm stay warm it's important new england and indianapolis and the colts again at home can be a very tough team they have tied the patriots at 17. now ken sims the patriots defensive line he may have suffered a broken leg he's undergoing an x-ray right now and obviously if the leg is broken he would be lost for the remainder of the season eason has stepped in he's thrown two touchdown passes in that game irving fryer and also stanley morgan new orleans and the rams of course the game you're watching 9-3 the saints with the lead and they are at the half of that game now dear brock dick what's your assessment of him when he gets into a pocket situation well i like him because he sits in there and i watch him here he'll sit there poised sometimes it appears that he has a hard time finding the outlet receiver downfield as he did right here they need to say boys i'm sorry confidence because they took it away from me because they wanted him to catch the ball and he set up a field goal for him and it is nine to three now we're talking about great running backs of course and jimmy brown is here and you've all heard of walter payton and tony dorsett and eric dickerson but one of the best runners in the nfl this season has not been getting the recognition he deserves and to emphasize that point we've borrowed from the format of a popular television commercial do you know me my running style has left a lasting impression of my opponents in fact i'm the leading rusher in the nfl who am i it's either mcniel or walter payton one or the other they got to be pretty close right now walter got to be up there pretty high i don't know who leads the national football league and running wesh you're not alone hardly anyone knows the answer is gerald riggs of the atlanta falcons i don't get that much attention because of our record right now i've been working my tail off and this team has been working until off and i've you know yet to come out with that recognition he wants to show people that he is one of the elite running backs in this lake soon he'll be a household name with with payton and dickerson and dorsett playing for a losing team rig stands out like a crown jewel but at home he does not need a credit card to get the recognition he deserves you know there's only one guy that can do it each year and to say that i'm new i'm the one who's done it in 85 would say an awful lot for me he's having an amazing year isn't jeffy oh yes he is uh last year was uh the start of it this year he's learned a couple of things you know he knows how to pick a hole now and he's fast and he's big all right well there was a quarterback he used to light up the skies down in washington by the name of sonny jurgensen and of course he's standing by with her cross let's go to rfk irv you know sonny works as a radio announcer down here brent he's covered every one of the redskins games for years and sonny are you surprised that jay schroeder has done as well as he has not really irv i think he's has outstanding talent he has a great grasp of the game and the things that he has done in the two performances of you know just outstanding and uh you know i'm not surprised in any way it's just that it's too early to evaluate him after two only two performances because uh you know things change each and every game he's going to get different looks different pressures so far he's done everything they've asked of him as a personality this team changed since schroeder came to the lineup i think so in a way yes i thought they were getting very predictable uh with joe theismann and and the offense under him and i think of that coach gibbs is utilizing the talents of jay straight a little more and they've become more unpredictable and i think that's helped them you know sonny we have a jim brown on our studio today as our special guest and brent mussberger asked him a question in a pre-game choices jim who was the greatest running back of all time i'm going to ask you who do you think is the greatest winning back of all time jim brown certainly was the vi era there's no question about that he played with a great football team but he was by far the best if dre schrader hadn't had a big game against the giants a couple of weeks ago what happened to the redskins they would have been in an awful lot of trouble and unfortunately he came in and played that way irv but uh you know he had no work with the offensive team because gibbs his theory has only worked one quarterback and fortunately for jay that he had enough work with uh jerry rome the uh quarterback coach and he did an outstanding job coming in under those conditions then he had a week to prepare for pittsburgh and he did a good job there he's going to need one today so thanks for being with us brent all right all you old guys always hang together we gotta hang these up today what are you gonna do we'll continue on cbs after these messages from your local stations new york you know this has not been a happy season for all pro quarterbacks named joe after a string of subpar performances earlier in the year joe theismann of the redskins of course suffered a broken leg two weeks ago and at the age of 36 his career indeed may be over then there is joe montana now he is the only other active quarterback in the nfc who has led his team to a super bowl victory and he too is having a troubled year this week we sent dick vermeel to san francisco to find out why [Music] [Applause] good times or games that i can go back and say i didn't even have a good game i had a terrible game it's hard to figure out that's the way the season goes that's what i keep telling people as you know you said that ball the shape of it it's funny and sometimes it bounces to you sometimes it bounces away from you indeed too many times this year it has looked like the game has gotten away from joe montana but why he's only 29 and in his prime i've gone in mentally prepared for every game as well as i did last year it's tough to repeat after a year not repeat but come back and repeat the same type of performance i should say as we did the year before the quarterback is football's centerpiece and when joe's game is off even slightly it can disrupt all the 49ers being the hall of fame future player is it's just a fair year for him where is he dropped off if he has dropped off well dick it's just getting the ball down the field to our people we're just not completing the ball the 18 and 20 yard passes that we have in the past and that's the one thing missing critics contend that montana's mind hasn't been on football that his new wife and baby have distracted him they point to the birth of my first child my i mean they're saying it was all the distraction leading up to it well anyone that has the kid knows that any of the distractions went after when they're crying and the baby want to change the diaper now got to feed and all this now we have something different well yes and a little bit there might be a little bit more tension a little more nerves but other than that around the house is usually the same the tension grew out of rumors that joe was taking drugs recently he called a news conference to deny the accusations i don't know how it all got started but i haven't taken drugs and it gets to be ridiculous it's sad to think that people have to resort to something like that that not thinking about the effect that it has on myself my family and my life joe may be a two-time super bowl mvp but he's still vulnerable perhaps the innuendo and the expectations have taken their toll and yet against the best teams he's had his best gains you almost wonder if there's been a letdown you know when you're out there you don't feel there's a letdown even if there might have been it sure doesn't feel like it i mean you still feel that same intensity going on the field but for joe montana who has felt a different kind of heat this season the competitive fire still burns i think the main drive is that feeling of competition knowing that you're being dependent upon and you're depending on other people also that really make it something special [Music] jimmy i think you can relate to this are the pressures we put on the superstars too great do we demand too much of them very definitely uh brent we think a superstar should do it every year and uh it's impossible because it's 11 men what did you find from coach walsh when you were confronted with him about joe brent i think i found out from the whole organization they're 100 behind the guy and i think a lot of them are willing to accept some of the responsibility for the drop-off in joe's performance it's still a very fine performance you know it's so difficult dick and jimmy to repeat his champions too in almost any professional sport absolutely right but he's competing against himself he's been so great two super bowls mvp how do you beat that exactly well he's coming up a little bit later of course in a big one against the redskins in washington that's our doubleheader game here on cbs right now let's send you back to the stadium and the game you're enjoying on
