[Music] come along with me for a walk along La Jolla scenic coast without a doubt one of California's most scenic areas La Jolla is located approximately 15 minutes north of downtown San Diego in about two hours south of Los Angeles on today's tour we'll be following a portion of the popular coast walk trail the San Diego La Jolla underwater park is the six thousand acre marine wildlife refuge created by the city of San Diego in 1970 [Music] the reefs keep the waves minimal making this a popular place for divers snorklers and kayakers kelp beds on the outer edges of the slope our popular fishing spots and are great for observing seals dolphins birds and fish [Music] there is a 600-foot drop-off not too far out from the shore and migrating gray whales can often be spotted here from October to April the la jolla shores community and beach is located on one end of the cove it is very popular with kayakers snorkelers and divers Scripps Institution of Oceanography is one of the oldest and largest centres for ocean and earth science research in the world hundreds of ocean and earth scientists conduct research worldwide with the aid of six research vessels Scripps pier is for private use only but they do offer scheduled tours originally located at the boathouse of the Hotel del Coronado they eventually outgrew their modest home and moved here to La Jolla Cove in 1905 the name was later changed to Scripps Institution of Oceanography to honor supporter Ellen browning Scripps it is now a department of the University of California San Diego and offers undergraduate and graduate programs in oceanography just north of Scripps pier is Black's beach named for the black family who had a horse farm here Black's Beach was the first and only public nude beach in the country for several years in the mid-1970s today its home to the exclusive La Jolla farms neighborhood with stunning coastal views and gorgeous sandy beaches it's no wonder La Jolla farms is one of the most affluent communities in the San Diego area this is La Jolla living at its finest and is home to several multi-million dollar homes the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club is membership only and is privately owned by the Kellogg family it has played host to the Fed Cup and Davis Cup professional tennis tournaments the resort is also home to the famous Marine room restaurant which offers spectacular ocean views and sometimes even waves crash against the windows that extreme high tide La Hoya was incorporated as part of San Diego when it became a city in 1850 the same year California became a state after the mexican-american war ended there were no permanent settlers until 19 years later when brothers Daniel and Samuel sizer each bought an 80 acre pot from the city of San Diego for a mere dollar 25 cents per acre little did they know that their plots of land would be worth over two million dollars per acre today La Hoya's founding father was in New York City stockbroker named Frank Botsford he bought 400 acres for five dollars and 50 cents an acre and held his first public auction to sell off parcels in April of 1887 he had often camped fished and hunted in the area and envisioned a future La Jolla with houses built into the beachside cliffs early street names reflected botsfords New York financial world ties like wall park and exchange another early pioneer was Gustav Schulz who came here from Germany in 1902 and hired Chinese laborers who use picks and shovels to dig a tunnel down to one of La Hoya's caves after almost two years of digging they finally made it several years later 145 stairs were added to replace the original rope used today you can pay an admission in the cave store to walk down the steps to the cave the cave is the largest of La Hoya's caves and the only one which can be entered by land the cave was given the name sonny jim by frank baum the author of The Wizard of Oz the cave was once used to smuggle Chinese immigrants and contraband whiskey during Prohibition the la jolla shores area actually has seven caves these caves were formed from over 200,000 years of ocean waves crashing into the rock and sandstone cliffs that lined the area the sedimentary soil here is very porous and it erodes easily [Music] downtown La Hoya's newest coastal development consists of three townhomes which bear the name of a cottage that once belonged to La Hoya's green dragon artist colony many landscape artists moved to La Jolla at the turn of the last century its rocky rugged coast is one of the most photographed places in the world at that time it was considered relatively inexpensive and a spectacular place to do their art German born teacher Anna held came to La Jolla in 1894 and created the green dragon colony an internationally recognised colony of artists musicians and writers the first of 12 cottages was built around the fireplace that anna built from stones gathered on the bluffs you can still see the fireplace located in Eddie B's restaurant which sits above where the colony used to be on Prospect Street the Brockton Villa is a popular restaurant with a great ocean view the building dates back to 1894 when it was constructed as a beach cottage it became a restaurant in the 1990s a local breakfast favorite here is the coast toast a thick cut orange flavored souffle like version of French toast notice the wall full of rare oversized abalone shells speaking of Victorian beach cottages the red rest and the red roofs were built in 1894 and they are the oldest structure still on their original location in La Jolla and the oldest surviving example of late Victorian beach cottage architecture once known as the Neptune and called tea rooms they've been vacant since the 1980s the cottages were designated historic in 1976 so the former owner could not redevelop them into apartments [Music] after years of legal battles the cottages have been cleared for redevelopment however they are required to keep the original structure as they rebuild the outside the parent company has called properties incorporated which also owns the Kolb Hotel and Suites next door the La Jolla Cove public swimming Beach is the most popular beach in the downtown area it is sheltered and it has public restrooms a lifeguard stand and stairs to get down to the beach popular attractions at The Cove is definitely the sea lions and the seals both are part of the pinniped species however there are some differences seals are considered earless and do not have external ear flaps but just a hole which closes when they dive whereas sea lions are called eared seals and they do have external ear flaps seals move by undulating their body but sea lions can walk on their front flippers another difference is that seals make grunting sounds and are usually much quieter than sea lions who make a louder barking sound seals use their large rear flippers to propel them through the water while sea lions use their front flippers both sea lions and seals have a life span of 20 to 30 years the brown pelican is the smallest of the pelican family and they can fly at speeds up to 30 miles an hour they have a weight of 6 to 7 pounds in a wingspan of up to 7.5 feet the pelicans pouch is used as a dip net to catch fish another interesting bird found in abundance at the cove is the cormorant this bird has special feathers which allows water to penetrate enabling the bird to swim well underwater they are expert divers and they can dive up to 4 minutes looking for food and go as deep as a hundred and forty eight feet the gorgeous la Valencia hotel the Hoya zone pink lady opened its doors in 1926 as an apartment hotel it has a beautiful restaurant and patio overlooking the ocean during World War two many locals spent hours perched in the tower scanning the skies and seas were enemy planes and ships in the 1950s the hotel was a glamorous Hollywood hideaway and local boy Gregory Peck helped start the La Jolla Playhouse during this time along this stretch of the coast you'll find Ellen browning Scripps Park she was a local philanthropist who was the founding donor of many local institutions she fell and broke her hip in 1922 and back then la jolla did not have a hospital she went on to found Scripps hospital and also donated money for other projects such as the children's pool the Women's Club bishops School among many others [Music] there used to be a much-loved 100 foot Monterey cypress tree here local author Ted Geisel aka dr. Seuss used to draw of whimsical versions of these trees in his children's books such as The Lorax an exclusive address on La Jolla his 939 Coast Boulevard this 18 story high-rise condo building was built in 1966 as a result of this building La Hoya instituted a 30 foot building restriction so as not to block the ocean view seal rock is a popular place for seals and sea lions to hang out along with various birds shall Beach is a popular place for beach combing and tide pools however try to visit at low tide when the beach is bigger California beaches are known for their cold water due to the Alaska current as well as their strong undercurrents La Hoya is a terrific place for tide pooling the rocky cliffs and sandy beaches create an endless supply of nooks and crannies for marine life viewing each October small groups of gray whales in the eastern Pacific start a 2 to 3 month trip south up to 6,500 miles ending in the warm water lagoons of Mexico's Baja Peninsula this round-trip migration of up to 14,000 miles is believed to be the longest annual migration of any mammal on earth these animals are huge and they reach a length of up to 50 feet weigh 36 tons and live about 50 to 70 years the La Jolla children's pool was donated by ellen browning scripts in 1931 a year before her death it features a 300-foot breakwater wall which forms a protected beach although built for children it has become popular with the sea lions and seals because it's a nice shelter in which to give birth seals and sea lions give birth from mid-december to mid-april and even though they look cute they can be very dangerous [Music] [Music] barriers are put up each year during birthing season to protect the children Casa de manana was originally built as a hotel and j edgar Hoover once stayed here it's now an exclusive retirement home offering all different levels of living the Museum of Contemporary Art was started in 1940 and sits on the property that was once ellen browning scripts home in 1915 an arsonist set fire to several La Jolla buildings including Ellen browning scripts original home she hired earthing Gill a prominent architect at the time to build her new home her gardens were on the north end of the building I hope you enjoyed this tour of the La Jolla coast and I thank you for watching don't forget to subscribe to my youtube page and also check me out on facebook at marks delicious adventures see you next time
