Know Your Player: Problem Solver

you know who you are the one who follows every trail of breadcrumbs the one who unraveled the villains plan before you even met him and treats his traps like a child's play pin you're the problem solver D&D is always keeping secrets from adventurers and you travel to uncover them before each session you sit in a black and white room accompanied by a saxophone player poring over your notes from the last session I've been at this case for a week now it always seems like the answer is just around the corner hiding in the shadows with a hidden blade waiting for me to find it I guess the question isn't when I'll crack the case but who breaks first the case me or the wind I don't sleep until I crack the case we already crack the case you missed last week's session you figured it out you owe him you look at the world and see a network of problems that only you are equipped to solve your highest level character is probably a rogue whose wit rivals his agility and your other characters abilities matter a lot less than their intelligence you walk into each session hoping the game will be a dark no our adventure with a gruesome murder that's only the tip of the iceberg but what you're probably gonna get is something like this metaphor about the rain that relates to the city it falls on realizing I accidentally inhaled some of the smoke a second ago some witty simile about a woman that did me wrong and a glass of scotch whiskey like comparing apples to oranges there's a challenge waiting for me in that room then I'll approach it with cynical pretension because I'm a hardened professional your strength is your drive as a player and every character you make is able to take the lead in a party you always have a plan for your team's next move and you always know what's gonna happen next both problem solvers and instigators will get past traps while others stand by and overthink but you're smarter than the average instigator and won't barrel through things recklessly and your smarts make you a problem you're egotistical pride in just how smart you are causes party problems especially when there's more than one leader the killer couldn't have gone far you need the Ranger to track the steps and I need everyone to stay alert don't worry we have the power friendship on our side if we believe in saving the victim's family then we can do anything dear God you may think you know more than everyone else and the villain may seem flat to you but here's an ego Buster for you you only have to be smarter than one of your dungeon masters characters if you feel the need to pat yourself on the back when you solve a puzzle or foil a villain consider the fact that you had a party with you it's over I did it no we did it we all we did it you're kind of supposed to win hooray we did it as opposed to not solving the puzzle and staying in this room and the villain usually isn't that complicated it's over your plan to destroy the town has failed what how did you know now for those of you with a problem-solver in your party they're likely one of two players either they lead the game like a proverbial Sherlock Holmes cracking the case while treating you all like Watson's or they pull a lone-wolf complex and never actually contribute to the game now these types of players are rarely actually an issue but sometimes they're pretension can get out of control in a game with a problem solver who bulldozes everyone else the game gets fundamentally ruined don't let anyone hog the experience of DMD we're all here to have fun as for Dungeon Master's with a problem solver in your party the best thing you can do is just engage them and take the time to make a complex villain and who the hell are you well done private cigar I installed him so that you would kill him and now look he [Laughter] right challenges with several solutions and let them make a plan we all like depth both in games and in people the more complex the game the happier the players hello are you ready to go on the beat me quest to deliver the PP man people need to meet me later yeah I'm ready cool look need your investigative prowess to find his peepee sounds fun we did it we all we did it yeah we did it I figured it out we all figured it out the bomb and this is he admitting that I planted a bomb I install him so that you would kill him and now look you you [Music]
