Kingdom of Lo Manthang - The Last Tibetan Kingdom of Upper Mustang in Nepal

was out of bounds for foreigners until 1992. and even today only a limited number of foreign Nationals are allowed to enter we are at lemon town and we're gonna meet the prince of Mustang although officially defunct as a kingdom since 2008 the people of upper Mustang who are called the Loba still pay respect to the royal family as unofficial monarchs [Music] it's incredibly hospitable and warm-hearted we had a wonderful time interacting with the Luba people of [Music] and the most exciting part was that we were there as guests of the prince of Mustang [Music] here we got to Witness stories and legends be hind this culturally Rich part of Nepal that once used to be on the path of the historical silk route and the trans Himalayan trade route the trade routes were instrumental in the exchange of ideas beliefs goods and people that has shaped the present cultural landscape and Heritage of low it is the only surviving Medieval World settlement in the Tibetan region and home to [Music] after starting our journey from Pokhara the city of lakes we made a day-long road trip to Marfa as our flights to domsum got canceled this happens often due to unpredictable weather so your other option is to catch a bus from Pokhara as we did from the gorgeous Marfa Village of the takali community who inhabit the lower parts of Mustang we went through the last born Village of on our way to muktinath one of the most sacred temples for Hindus around the world we then made our way into upper Mustang through valleys and Highlands until we reached the village of Tucson where we witnessed the yardum festival that has been practiced in these parts for centuries it ends on the third day after horses and jockeys from the surrounding Villages compete in the final event after watching the horse race on the final day we made our way towards lumantha within the last decade upper Mustang has gotten well connected by roads all the way to the Tibetan border [Music] ten days since we left home we are finally headed to Upper Mustang and this is Kami we left Susan around almost two hours ago we are on a bolero headed to all around us we could now see Landscapes with the most unreal colors we stopped at tarang for a quick lunch [Music] we shared the ride with a group of mountain bikers who are also guides and were here to explore this route on their bicycles [Music] all right Jose and we're gonna meet the princess it may be study we found the Royal Mustang the lake guys my expectations [Music] [Music] beautiful it's very pretty paper light [Music] is a stone and wood Fusion of modern and ancient art and architecture run by the Royal Family [Music] this is this is [Music] the hotel opened up five years ago took them about eight years to build this hotel because of the weather restrictions the interior here is beautiful and so it's the exterior everything is very touchly and meticulously Blaze all the furniture the paintings on the walls mesmerizing and it's level was right in the middle of the silk route towards Tibet they became so wealthy that they had to build a huge fortified City with multiple Towers area the settlement is located on the ancient trade route that runs along the Kali gondaki River cutting through the Himalayas [Music] foreign wall with Towers or Zone at the corners to within the walls there exists a compact commune of houses officially lomantang's first records began in 1380 when the walled city was founded by Amy pal rising from Western Tibet the Buddhist Warrior amipal came looking for a fertile Valley and built a fortress here and the colors used on the houses here are particularly vibrant I think there are more than more than 100 houses here the low bars inhabitants of lumanthang are closely related culturally and ethnically to the people of Western and Central Tibet the culture is to a large degree defined by the psychopath traditions of Tibetan Buddhism and even today many of the ancient festivals rituals and ceremonies are still practiced foreign [Music] while exploring the old settlement we met this gentleman who offered to take us to his house from where we could get a great view inside his house where he runs a shop yes foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] gifted us a Sally gram a type of fossil found only in the Kali gondaki River and also has significance in both Hinduism and Buddhism all right after exploring Lo mantang all day we went back to Royal Mustang where we played the traditional Nepali game of bhaktal and drank some locally brewed Roxy [Music] um is a strategic two-player board game that originated in Nepal Nepal okay foreign the tigers hunt the goats while the goats attempt to block the Tigers movements this game is also seen inside we have all four tigers are placed on the Four Corners okay guys they can move to an adjacent free position along the lines the peaceful atmosphere of Royal Mustang's interior along with the food and Hospitality were unbelievable the kitchen offers a wide range of delicious local and Western cuisines [Music] thank you [Music] damn cactusp so good this is probably the best food I've had in any trick slash trip in the mountains [Music] with the rich history Lo mantang and Royal Mustang give you a sense of having traveled back in time [Music] we also work while we are traveling and this place is a great creative space that will inspire you with its Rich Heritage amidst the other worldly mountainous valleys of upper Mustang foreign [Music] and peach juice while you are in the route to Jose a small village close to the Tibetan border [Music] not too far from lumantang lies the little village of Jose also known as garfu the village is known for its sky cave systems some of which date back over 3 000 years one of the cave complexes has even been converted into hotel rooms right next to these archaeological Marvels are centuries old monasteries [Music] Monastery is a very old Monastery located on a hill near chose it is unknown when the monastery was constructed but when lokenjen a mustangi prince and famous scholar of the sake tradition visited the site in the 15th century he found an ancient Monastery in Ruins he went into meditative retreat in a nearby cave and then rebuilt the monastery naming it Tibetan for sun Kiev monastery and we were lucky enough to be here for a Puja that happens only once every few years it was the last day of a three-day ceremony and people from surrounding Villages had come here to receive blessings from a senior llama who had come here all the way from Tibet for this very occasion all the men women and children were dressed in their traditional outfits and it was a sight to behold [Music] getting blessings from the head llama was another incredible experience after waiting in a long line our turn finally arrived [Music] receiving blessings from such a high-ranked llama is a big occasion for the people here [Music] after receiving blessings from the Llama we chatted with people who visited from different Villages nearby and far away foreign [Music] [Music] traveling just like life is like a box of chocolates you never know what surprise awaits you attending the ceremony and meeting all the people here was one of the most unique experiences of Our Lives [Music] we then ate Prasad served by the people from the Goomba foreign [Music] [Music] 's brilliant Landscapes and the colorful outfits of the Loba people created a visually striking atmosphere this tourists [Music] we then went to explore the shija June caves hey [Music] okay [Music] [Music] challenge this is donkey [Music] s [Music] that was more than 2 000 years ago um the rooms are still here intact see what it's like to be inside a cave Mustang is a land of caves over ten thousand man-made caves have been discovered here so far also known as Sky caves many archaeologists and Scholars have been studying these caverns and have uncovered partially mummified human remains [Music] burial Chambers built as early as 1000 BC reflect the pre-budism born tradition of sky burial which is still practiced in some parts of Mustang [Music] [Music] [Music] is a five-story structure first on the edge of a precipice there are multiple ladders leading to higher levels [Music] [Music] there are also windows and one can get a great view of
