[Music] hey what's going on currency lovers it's Kyle with variety and airs and corn ah welcome to another video so this one's gonna cover a little bit different subject matter that I normally cover I normally cover paper money quite a bit and no this is not the video about comic book collecting and Star Wars which a lot of people have messaged me about because they noticed that I like Star Wars quite a bit which I do but I'll show you that nerd gameroom memorabilia room in another video but comment I guess if you want to see it I'll make it quicker than that but this video is going to cover Kennedy halfs something that Dustin Morgan from coin-op and I were talking about the other day it's something that I like to collect outside of paper currency or wartime currency type things sometime be a fun video to talk about talk about clads talk about some errors you can find um or lack thereof as well as a few other aspects that Kennedy haves and a little history behind so thanks for tuning in let's check out this episode on Kennedy halves already after the 17th time I'm trying to get my camera to work here we are so let's talk some Kennedy 50 cent pieces half dollars whatever you want to call them first let's talk inception which I'm not talking about Leonardo DiCaprio or that movie whether it sucked or not I'm talking about how the coin came into existence a little backstory basically within hours pretty much for a day or so of the assassination of Kennedy in 1963 which is on November 22nd the mint essentially the heads of the mint got together and said hey we need to make a coin and commemorate this president he was beloved and is no longer with us so essentially chief engraver Gill Roberts he's the one that engraved the Eagle on the back which on this piece is a Bicentennial so horrible example but on the normal 50 cent piece is an eagle on the back I will show you one of those heel so as you can see the reverse of the coin it's an awesome engraving of an eagle it's definitely a cool depiction on the front back of the coin so in the interest of time robert's modified basically existing bus they had made a commemorative coin to Kennedy in like 62 I think or 61 maybe and so they essentially use the bus that's almost identical they just essentially put more design enhancements into the hair and into the you know accoutrements of detail on the coin and then the inauguration commemoration commemorative coin for the inauguration of the President did not have this reverse they actually took that from another coin this coin comes in a lot of different compositions that's the fun thing about the coins for this one for example the 1965 through 70 were 40% silver was their composition it's made up slightly of the outside of the coin and then of course the innards of the coin come together to make about 40% silver in 1964 when the coin came out he was actually almost 90 percent silver so those are the most collectible if we look at these two coins for example this one from 1976 which would be after they changed the composition to basically have no silver in it and it's essentially nickel and copper and like zinc if you look at the sides that's when you get that discoloration that brown band that runs around the edge of the coin on the collar of the coin this one on the left here is obviously a silver clad and these are both circulated albeit this one on the left being although older it's in a lot better shape so it's an 11 year old or coin it's just been taken care of better I actually and if you look at you know for example this one has a lot of circulatory aspects to it you can see how how tarnished it is I kind of like it though actually it looks like somebody maybe went in and did some staining or some fun stuff there or something more it's just simply a you know dirt and grime on I don't know but I just really liked how prominent it is I love this this coin I've kept this one for a while but the rest of these that are here all came from from bank rolls that I got from the bank and I just go in there and ask him for various things there's not a lot of errors on the kennedy coins there there is ones of course for like you know DDoS and reap hunt benchmark it reap unshed mint marks and stuff like that that are more your standard coin varieties and heirs but nevertheless they're harder to come by which makes these very very collectible another thing to keep in mind too is there's some differences in lettering and errors in the lettering where it says Liberty on the front and stuff like that those are other things that you can collect with these coins that make them a little increased in value but besides some of the silver content ones like I'm showing you here they're simply or rather here and here you know these coins don't necessarily have a huge premium over face value so that's something to keep keep in mind also they're more collectible for the silver aspect like I said there's also one that was cast in 99.9% gold that's I think it's almost like 3/4 of a troy ounce or something it was released in 2014 as a commemorative coin for 50 years commemoration and there was lines all the way around the mint just to pick up those coins so those are those are very much so collectible albeit way more expensive obviously being made out of gold so other things about the coin for condition and grade like I kind of touched on circulated circulated coins are obviously less not necessarily but in most cases are less valuable than a Sun circulated coin or hunk these are all circulated you can tell obviously by condition of the coins the 1970 Kennedy was actually all business struck so the the mint produced those coins in San Francisco with a proof finish for inclusion in 1970 and they were only able to be you know basically found or received via the meant by buying a provement set in 1970 so 1971's are a little bit more collectible so if we go through some of these coins I was kind of dumb these are all you look at the sides of these you can tell these are all clads they're all 40% silver you know as far as let's touch on that for a second so basically in 1964 half dollars they're made 90% silver 10% copper so if you get a 1964 it's already worth a lot more than than its initial face value of 50 cents later on half dollars were made from 1965 to 70 that are composed of basically 80 percent silver 20 percent copper and the insides are about 21 percent silver like 79 percent copper so you know a net composition of 40 percent silver 60 percent copper like I said would make it a 40 percent clad there are some examples in 71-72 stuff like that that they basically minted the coins on an older you know in an older planchette so some of them in like 71 72 do you have silver composition although they change that to basically after 70 these coins don't incorporate really any if not at all any silver in them so I like to keep with the 70 and before coins personally but that's me you know you don't have to do that as we go through these you can see that you know obviously none of these are Bicentennial coins because that hadn't occurred yet the Bicentennial coin here is also something that a lot of people collect because of course it has you know the Bicentennial 1776 1976 date on it it's a different reverse so the in the the reverse shows Independence Hall it is a really pretty coin this one is quite circulated but these are very collectible I have a lot of them that's actually all of these are Bicentennial coins but millions of them were minted dozen this we make them massively collectible like I said it'd be more an uncirculated coin for prices and values of these just check out our website variety airs calm or shoot over to dust and Morgan's channel coin up there's a link in the description box below and you can ask him some questions on them I like to collect these a lot they're they're cool I like Kennedy in the history behind it not necessarily the Kennedys but just his presidential run and previously running up to that then of course the assassination of Kennedy is one of the few assassinations that took place in American history so collecting the coins is kind of neat to me anyhow other than that I do not have a copy of a gold Kennedy half-dollar but I will show a picture of that at the end of this video after the credits so check that out any questions on Kennedy's this is just kind of a quick video to give you kind of a rundown of what to look for there is a lot more to it so stay tuned for other videos on Kennedy halfs Ike dollars and one of my other favorites which is susan b anthony dollar coins thanks for watching this episode check everyone later see you [Music]
