were privileged my family and myself we were all privileged to share with you seven of those 30 years in fellowship and in ministry and today we regret that we are not able to be with you because of prior commitments and responsibilities in fact throughout the month of september as you celebrate but we are joining you in in spirit and we know that god will bless you as you reflect as you give thanks and celebrate what he has done for you what he has done through you over the past 30 years may i say that the 30 years of your existence and operations and ministry really has been a defining generation a generation is 20 but no more than 30 years so you are actually ending a generation right now as you celebrate but as we reflect upon the 30 years many things happened in the world many things as a matter of fact the very year you were born in 1991 was the fall of the soviet union then we had 10 years later on just one decade removed we had the attack on the world trade center in 2001 under falling of the twin towers in 2003 we had the the three days black out i remember that like yesterday and then the tsunami in thailand of 2004 where over a quarter of a million people lost their lives and then we had a deadly katrina 2005 and the birth of uh facebook in 2004 and youtube in 2005 and today we see that social media really controls the world and then we had the economic meltdown in 2008 when everything looks so grim and i'm so gloomy here in america i was with you at that time and you know in that period the lord really blessed us during that economic meltdown the church made for the very first time uh a hundred thousand dollars and it took us over the threshold of being a million dollar congregation in northeastern conference but you know you know you know that was in 2008 and and and and in 2009 we we saw the inauguration of the first black president and black family to the white house this was very historic it was an epic experience for people of color in particular and then we had a haiti earthquake in 2010 where so many people lost their lives and even while i serve you we had family members who lost loved ones in that deadly hated quake in 2010. in 2012 we had the super storm sandy that ravaged the the northeast and in particular new york and then come 2014 and we had the mysterious disappearance of malaysia airline mh370 to this day no one can say what happened to that aircraft and what happened to the people there are all kinds of speculations about that in 2015 we saw the same-sex legislation by the supreme court allowing people of the same sex to be married just as heterosexual couples and then in between we had other challenges that threatened our health and our survival like sars and ebola and chicken gully and smallpox and triple e all these things happened in the past 30 years then came the pandemic of a hundred years since uh way back a hundred years 900 years 1918 and 19 was the last pandemic and now we are going through one that began in 2019 and is still challenging us and we can't seem to to find a way out even with a vaccine we still challenge new variant coming up and becoming great threat to the survival of people this happened in in in in 30 years of of of history and then we saw the first female and black and indian vice president elected to the white house we also had the unprecedented attack on the white house in january of this year 2021 and so yours has been a defining generation 30 years it has to reflect upon these 30 years i pray god that we will not just be able to give him thanks but to see the things that we did well and the things we could have done better and the things that we ought to begin to do now especially as we are 30 years nearer to the coming of jesus in fact jesus himself said in mark 13 and verse 30. these words this generation shall not pass till these things be fulfilled now he said that two thousand years ago and could imagine then and then now in our day and time if he should have been speaking the same words what kind of tone it will take him because thirty two thousand years ago and now in our day and time he said this generation shall not pass till these things be fulfilled so king's word temple let us take advantage of the times that ahead of us and do exploits for jesus christ that we cannot just spend another 30 years here because it's getting worse in fact daniel tells us in daniel chapter 12 and uh verses 1 and 4 he says everything is bad you ain't see anything yet he says because there's coming a time of trouble such as never was since there was a nation on the earth this is just a smoke that we are seeing right now so as you celebrate and as we look at the difficulties the dark days that we are going through and that we will go through know that you have nothing to fear for the future except as you shall forget the way the lord has led you and his teachings in your past 30 years history understand that we just can't give up now come too far from where we started from nobody told me nobody told us the road would be easy but i don't believe and you don't believe he brought you this far to leave you so on behalf of first lady on behalf of our daughters we want to wish you today and throughout your celebration a very happy 30th anniversary we love you god bless you as you celebrate praise the lord everybody praise the lord everybody we are glad to be in the house of the lord another sabbath to our god we want to give him all the glory all the honor that is due to his name so praise the lord everybody lord everybody i deserve and nothing that i've earned but they lean grace says [Music] but for your grace [Music] but for your grace [Applause] but for your love for you [Music] i would be [Music] but for your grace [Music] if it wasn't for his love and his grace where would we be [Music] it [Music] it keeps [Music] me grateful [Music] [Applause] [Music] it kept me [Music] it keeps me [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] everybody [Music] [Applause] be lost [Music] but for foreign [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] grace grace [Music] is [Music] for your love she wasn't for your grace i don't know where i'd be without you [Music] i don't know where i'll be without you [Music] hallelujah [Music] divine the glory hallelujah [Music] she hallelujah [Applause] in the house of the lord it is good to see your faces all be covered by masks it is good to be home i have missed kingsborough uh you guys have played such an incredible part in my ministry and it's always good i walked through the doors and i said this feels like home this feels familiar and there might be somebody from cambridge watching right now cambridge is home too cambridge is home too but but once the place becomes home it always stays home when you have family there and i'm just so grateful to be part of the kingsborough family and legacy i'm grateful to pastor hunt dr hunt and his wife for extending to me the invitation and the opportunity to be here and to worship with you it's been six years uh since i last crossed the threshold and i'm just so excited for kingsborough for the ministry here under the stellar leadership of dr hunt and pastor michelle moda a friend of mine from seminary always a god-fearing and blessed woman you are blessed exceedingly blessed this anniversary gives you an opportunity to consider the legacy of leadership that has passed through this church the members that have offered service at this church and when you consider what god has done here you can just praise the lord that you are at kingsborough and not someplace else not everyone has the testimony of kingsborough temple so i praise the lord for what he has done at this church through pastor hunt through pastor moda and what god has in store for you as well i believe that this anniversary is just another launching point into greater and better things that god has in store for you so i'm excited for you i gotta say everywhere i go i remember kingsborough there's something about doing ministry here that gives you preparation for ministry everywhere else uh and there are things that people wonder and they say how do you know how to do this and i'm able to recall a moment here at this church with members here in different meetings that prepared me for the moments that were ahead so i want you to know that in everything that i do going forward kingsborough is always in my heart and always in my memories uh it's been six years since i've been here and a lot has changed in that time as you can see i've grown a little bit of hair i've even put on a little bit of weight and the last time you saw me i was unmarried but god has seen fit to bless me with a wonderful wonderful wonderful wife that i do not deserve i tell you right now i met her in the uk out there doing evangelism that's a word by itself do ministry god will bless you amen and i met her and i just knew i said okay this is it god we i hear you loud and clear i received the sign i received the signal and god saw fit who uh blessed me with my best friend yasha who's traveled all the way from the uk to be with this brother over here do ministry with him i praise god for you thank you for your support thank you for your love uh come on we can do better y'all don't gotta clap for me you can clap for a clap for my wife go ahead so i'm excited i'm excited to get into the word i would just want to say hello to all of the faces uh that i'm recognizing some of y'all's taking a little bit i got to look deep into your eyes to put it together but it's so good to see so many familiar faces i have so many fond memories with all of you we're gonna get into the word today and it's taken from genesis chapter 45 genesis chapter 45 and we're reading from verses four through eight verses four through eight some of my fond memories that i had here were just definitely having a good time with pastor marks and he's probably gonna go back and watch this so pastor marx i didn't forget you i'm shouting you out doc for all that you've done for me i appreciate you and our message today while we're coming from genesis chapter 48 45 verses 4 through 8 uh our message is titled on site on site now there are certain titles i can't use all over the country but there are certain titles i can use in brooklyn new york because you know what it means when i say on site you know that i don't have to read you the definition of what it means to have an on-site kind of relationship with somebody but i'm gonna read it for you just in case somebody is tuning in from far away and doesn't know what on-site means on-site means to inform someone that you will engage in a serious physical altercation with them whenever wherever and around whomever upon your icon eye contact of their presence without any discussion that's what it means to be on site that means the next time i see you there won't be any sharing of words there will be no discussion and no negotiation that the next time i see you no matter who is there or where we are or when we are we gonna handle some business it means that something might have happened in the past and i don't have time to deal with you then but i sure do have time to deal with you today and i'm gonna deal with you the next time i see you and the truth is that some of us have on-site relationships because of the things that we have experienced some of us have on-site relationships because of the things others have said some of us have on-site relationships because of the things others did or did not do and and the fact is that in spite of our pedigree or position there are some people that because of what they did because of how they handle certain things we would understand if you lost your mind just for a moment we would understand if you just took your chance and opportunity to handle some business from the past and if there's anyone in the scriptures that has the right to have an on-site relationship it's joseph joseph has gone through so much when we pick up joseph's story in genesis 45 he has experienced traumatic situation after traumatic situation but yet when we pick up joseph's story in genesis 45 we see this this paradoxical this perplexing this peculiar thing that is going on because joseph the next time he sees his brothers doesn't operate with an on-site mentality rather he says this please come near to me in verse 8. so they came near then he said i am your brother joseph whom you sold into egypt but now do not be therefore grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here for god sent me before you to preserve life for these two years the famine has been in the land and there are still five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvesting and god sent me before you to preserve a posterity for you in the earth and save your lives by a great deliverance so now it was not you who sent me here but god and he has made me a father to pharaoh and lord of all his house and a ruler throughout the land of egypt for the next few moments we're going to speak on the topic on sight let's pray father we thank you for your love your grace and your mercy lord we pray that i would not get in the way of the message and that we would hear your heart in jesus name amen there's a story of a man who is walking past the circus as he makes his way past the circus he notices that the animals are appropriately caged behind behind bars he sees the lion which is behind a cage he sees a bear which is appropriately behind a cage as well and then he sees an elephant that is not caged and he's curious because he knows that the lion is dangerous and he knows that the bear is dangerous however he is also familiar with the power of the elephant and recognizes that the elephant should probably probably be more secure than it is at that time so he diverts from his path and he goes to find the circus master and he asks the circus master why is it that the bear is behind a cage and the lion is behind a cage however this elephant is not caged the circus master chuckles to himself and says that's a very good question he says see when we get the elephants we get them while they're young feeble and weak and while they are young feeble and weak we tie a string around their leg and when we tie that string to their leg because they're not yet powerful enough to break away from that string they become accustomed to being bound by that string but i said but but then this then the man says well well what happens when they get a little older and when they get a little stronger and the circus master says see although they get bigger and although they get stronger because they are bound when they're young although they get stronger and although they get bigger they create an association with the string and although at this time they have the power to break free they are still bound because of how we trained it in its childhood they're still bound because of what we did when it was young they're still bound because of what we did when it was vulnerable so so so the man walks away recognizing that what happens to people in their childhood what happens to them in their in their in their younger years can have a profound effect on how they live the rest of their lives and kingsborough as we are celebrating 30 years of glory 30 years of ministry 30 years of legacy and as we look forward towards the future if we can just be a little honest today there are probably some things in our lives individually or communally that have hindered us that have bound us and although we might have the power and strength to break free some of us might still be held by the past some of us would define that kind of issue as trauma see trauma is the extreme stress that overwhelms a person's ability to cope trauma changes the way we make sense of the world and trauma can impact how you view and understand yourself and if there's someone in the scriptures family that has experienced trauma it's joseph if you're familiar with joseph's story you know that joseph as he was growing up began to have dreams he had a dream that he had a sheaf of wheat that stood that stood tall and that his brother's sheaves bowed down to his and when he told his brothers they laughed at him and mocked him then joseph had another dream where he was caught up in the sky and 12 stars the sun and the moon bowed down to him and he told his family and even his father mocked him for having such a dream we then learned in joseph's narrative that his brothers are so jealous of him that they sought that they sell him into slavery a caravan of of traffickers pass by and they give away their brother just for a little bit of money and joseph is then placed in slavery in egypt and potiphar's house i'm giving you the the cliff notes in case you're not familiar with joseph's story and joseph is then falsely accused of sexual assault by potiphar's wife he then is imprisoned falsely and he is forgotten by the butler and the baker if there's anyone in the scriptures who's been through a lot who knows some heartache who knows some trouble who knows some trauma it's joseph see the trouble with trauma is that you can be triggered to respond to a situation with disproportionate emotional intensity as you respond to the present with the pain of the past and i hope that this sets somebody free to know that some of the drama you're dealing with today has nothing to do with you you're simply triggering somebody's trauma that when trauma is not healed the pain of the past lives on in the present and tries to control your present and keep you from your future i hope this lets somebody know that she's not mad at you for what you did you're just triggering her trauma that he's not just hot tempered you're triggering his his trauma that some of this church drama is not about you it's about issues that predate you you're triggering somebody's trauma and joseph doesn't just sound angry when he meets his brothers no no no the the miracle and the mystery in the text is that when joseph meets his brothers who who mocked him for his dreams who sold him into slavery who didn't know how to love him joseph treats them with love and respect the mystery in the miracle is that joseph's response does not reflect the trauma he has experienced now this is important for us to study because unresolved trauma threatens to stunt your emotional growth we turn in 30th kingsborough unresolved trauma threatens to injure your relationships unresolved trauma can cause you to have a negative impact even when you have a positive intent unresolved trauma has the ability to spoil your blessings and unresolved trauma has the ability to keep you from your future and we keep you reliving and rehashing the past so the question is kingsborough how do we collectively and individually heal or manage our trauma so that we can step into the new seasons god has for us i didn't come to play with y'all today because i know that we've been through some things 18 months of a pandemic the murder of george floyd the continual rehashing of black men and women being killed by police i know that we've been through some things either individually or collectively i can't recount your past but you know it and the reason why some of us are quiet right now is because as we're listening to the message we're simultaneously remembering people who did things that they should not have done we're simultaneously remembering some things that we experience that hurt us so as we look for solutions in the text i just want to pause for a second and say that if we're going to heal from our trauma and manage our trauma you should get a therapist before we turn to the text and before we stop to pray and before we turn to these other things that we're used to turning to let me just tell you that the same way you would not come to your pastor to heal your broken leg the same way that you would find a professional who knows what they're doing and has adequate training that the same way your body can get sick your mind can be sick as well and that it does not make you crazy to not see a therapist in fact it might suggest that you're crazy if you don't see a therapist it might suggest that there are some things that are unresolved and unhealed and you refuse to acknowledge because you won't get the help that you that you so desperately need see before we turn to the scriptures and before we turn to the word i want you to know that god ordains therapists too the same way god ordains preachers and god ordains teachers god ordains doctors god ordains therapists as well come on say amen shanique in the balcony the problem with us is that for many of us we love to self-medicate we're adventists i'ma drink a little bit of tea i'm gonna go to prayer meeting and do go to prayer meeting i'm gonna go to church service and i will and do go to church service but we count on these things i'm gonna get that natural remedy i'm gonna get nature's penicillin and we think that all of these things are adequate to meet our needs but can i tell some of us the truth that that that it's high time for many of us to go and get the help that we need many of us are self-medicating with good stuff but can we be honest that some of us are self-medicating with bad stuff some of us the reason why you can't get out of that brother's bed is because you're using him to self-medicate some of us the reason why we can't leave that sister is because we're using her to self-medicate the reason why some of us start still high on that weed or still drinking from that bottle is because we're using these substances to either avoid or to numb us from the pain of our past but but it's not just those who like to have fun on the weekend who are self-medicating church folk love to self-medicate as well uh you might not be turning to to to weed you might not be turned into drugs uh but some of us who have been in the church long enough have learned to self-medicate with a sense of superior with a sense of superiority from weaponized theology i'ma say it again some of us we we we self-medicate with a sense of superiority that we derive from weaponized theology that instead of using the word of god to heal people we use the word of god to hurt people we use the word of god to judge people we use the word of god to diminish people we tell what we know and what we've learned and what we've experienced and we look down on others because they don't understand some prophecy the way that we understand prophecy because they don't live the way that we live see not everyone is self-medicating on that other stuff some of us have even used good stuff that god has not ordained in order to try and work through the trauma in our lives that's the reason why some of us uh that's the that's the reason why some of us uh haven't come back to church because we're self-medicating some of y'all i'm self-medicating on the screen let me talk to the people in youtube land right now some of y'all the reason why you haven't made it back to the church isn't because of the pandemic no no no it's not because you're afraid for your health it's because over the last 18 months you've experienced church without drama it's because over the past 18 months you've managed to stay away from brother sis brother so-and-so and sister so and so and now you figure i'ma just stay in my pajamas and stay in my bed and i'm gonna just watch from afar so i don't have to deal with those people but can we be honest that's self-medication as well you know what they call that avoidance you're not dealing with your issue and here's the truth whatever you don't manage it's gonna manage you that's the reason why things haven't been able to work out you've been running from the issues over here and they've been managing the rest of your life and we haven't yet put two and two together so if we could glean some lessons on how to heal from trauma from the life of joseph we're just going we're going to work through some things on that that should help us reframe some of the things that we've experienced if we're going to look at joseph's life the first thing i need is to know this first reframe i need us to know is that their rejection is actually god's protection their rejection was actually god's protection let me break it down so we know in joseph's story that joseph has been through trial trauma and tribulation we know from joseph's story that he wanted the love and the respect and the affection of his brothers yet in spite of all that he did in spite of how good he tried to behave he could just not do enough to earn their love and affection sees joseph's issue predates joseph because joseph's father married both leah and rachel joseph's father married two sisters that got into a competition of who could give birth to more children and so the sons of leah and her handmaid were in competition with the sons of rachel and her handmaid and there was nothing don't miss this church there was nothing joseph could have done to cause leah's sons to love him they hated him because of who of how they were born they hated him because of the atmosphere of their home they hated him and there was nothing that he could do about it and there's somebody sitting here today watching online that has been seeking the affection of a father who never showed up who has been seeking the love of a mother who never played her role who has been seeking the the love of of a boyfriend or a husband or a wife people who have been in our lives but did not do what they were supposed to do can i set you free today see their rejection although you've been pining and wondering maybe if i was just good enough maybe if i just behaved better maybe if i got an extra degree maybe if i made a little bit more money maybe if i did a little bit more maybe then i would be enough but if i can just set you free for a moment god wants us to know today that their rejection is not your fault in fact their rejection is actually god's protection i am in the text because even jesus says in matthew 7 verse 6 he says do not give what is holy to the dogs nor cast your pearls before swine hmm this is not pastor cadet this is jesus he says do not give what is holy to the dogs or cast your pearls before swine lest they trample them under their feet and turn and tear you into pieces did you catch the word what jesus is saying jesus is saying that the reason why pigs don't know what to do with pearls is not because the pearls are isn't because that the pearls that that that that you don't know what a pearl is but it's because pigs don't recognize pearls when they're in front of them jesus says don't give pigs to pearls because pigs will trample over pearls and you've been living your life thinking that you've been rejected you weren't selected because you're not a pearl and the word of god is showing us today that it's not about you it's about the pig that pigs don't know what to do with pearls you've been living your life thinking maybe if i shine myself a little bit more maybe if i just behave a little no no no he says pigs will trample over pearls their rejection says more about them than it says about you and jesus is saying that even pigs don't know the value of pearls so because that pig didn't know how to love you i removed you the fact that they left doesn't say anything about your pearl-ness it says something about their pig pigheadedness you can go ahead right now turn to your neighbor say i'm a pearl whether they know it or not see some of us need to need to reframe and learn this lesson not every loss is a loss that god is able to add through some traction see jesus says that the pigs will trample over the pearls which means that god had to remove you in order to protect you you've been hurting over who never showed up when you really had a testimony thank god they didn't raise you they didn't know how to raise you because pigs don't know what to do with pearls thank god they didn't marry you they didn't know how to love you because pigs don't know what to do with pearls thank god that they divorced you they didn't know how to take care of you because pigs don't know what to do see you've been stuck on what you didn't have not recognizing that when god removed you he was actually shielding you thank god they didn't hire you they didn't know you they didn't know your capacity because pigs don't know what to do with pearls thank god they fired you because they would have kept you from god's vision for your life because pigs don't know what to do with pearls we know this don't we know this how many times have we walked into a space and ran into an x that we've been pining over and then after a few years we see thank god he kept me i had been praying for what would have destroyed me but god in his infinite wisdom saw 10 years down the line he saw when you would need somebody who could be patient he saw when you would need somebody who was long suffering he saw when you would need somebody who knew the lord and said this ain't it you want it right now because you don't see what i see the reframe for us today is that their rejection was actually god's protection i know it hurts i know you feel like you're missing something but if god could just pull back the veil for a moment and allow you to see what you missed out on this is why we pray for god to protect us from dangerous scene there are some things we don't even know that we need to praise god for see see god is like a masterchef you know if you ever watch master chef master chef i i'm always amazed whenever i watch it because they pull out fruits and vegetables and meats i don't even know existed and i'm like i don't know what you're going to do with that i know eggs i know so i know pepper right don't all of this fancy and extract and all of that fancy stuff tabitha i know you know what you're doing but i don't know what i'm doing right so so so so the master chef is great because whatever they put in front of the master chef the master chef knows what to do with it they they they have enough experience and they have enough pedigree and they've been down that road with that road before and they know what to pair with the other thing in order to create a meal and the good news that we receive from the text today is that god is a master chef that in spite of what you lost and in spite of what you've been through whatever ingredients the enemy puts before god whatever ingredients your mistakes have put before god it's not too hard for god to work with god is able to take the ingredients of your failure the ingredients of your pain the ingredients of your tragedy the ingredients of your past the ingredients of your hurts the ingredients of your trauma and turn it into a meal that can bless you and bless others as well there is nothing too hard for god to do their rejection was god's protection and and this gives us greater insight into the temptation joseph faced with potiphar's wife i know we grew up in cradle roll and children's story just so accustomed to just just run right she she grabbed through his robe and he ran and praised the lord run but but there's more happening than potiphar's wife just wanting joseph no no no see potter the temptation was so powerful because potiphar's wife was offering what joseph never got joseph had been rejected by his brothers he had been overlooked by his parents they when he had his dream they were like they they dismissed him so she shows up and it's not just sexuality that she offers but she's showing joseph i will desire you in the way that your family never did remember temptations are not just what they seem like on the surface but many times there is an emotional or spiritual undergirding that draws you in see what made the temptation so compelling is that she was offering what joseph had lacked she desired him while others had rejected him and when you're rejected by those who should have embraced you you can find yourselves drawn to and desiring those who would destroy you this is the reason why we have so much common sense for others but sometimes no common sense for ourselves because the temptation comes packaged in what you missed out on we tend to look for in our relationships what we lacked in our families but don't be defined by your deficiencies that you look for what you lacked to the exclusion of all other good qualities some of us have suffered such great rejection that we don't even love who we're with we just love that they love us we don't love them we love that they love us because their love is filling a void in our lives and if they ever hmm stopped loving us in the way that we desire suddenly we have no more love for them but could it be that we never loved them we just loved what they provided the problem with that is that sometimes those relationships become so successful that you don't need that person anymore that you love them and they love you back in the way that you need so that they meet the need and now that you're whole you don't know what to do with them ah we don't have time to go down that road so so so so you don't love them you just desire to be desired you're not in love with you you see red flags but you desire to be desired the spirit has told you this ain't it but you desire to be desired and because they're giving you what you lacked you're blind to everything else thank god joseph was able to run see this the word for us is not just to run from sexual temptation yes but to be self-aware enough that when what you lacked shows up knocking at your door you don't take time to negotiate you recognize i'm not strong enough to box with you i gotta run because if you get a hold of me i won't know what to do their rejection was god's protection second thing we can learn from joseph's text from joseph's story today is that forgiveness does not require friendship [Applause] i know it looks like pasta is causing trouble this is not our standard theology right this is not how we understand forgiveness because the way we understand forgiveness is that when we're forgiven we are accepted back into the warm embrace of god praise the lord right that if we confess our sins god is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness praise the lord however what we see from joseph and if we really study forgiveness we'll begin to understand that forgiveness does not require friendship see we got to cover this because there's somebody who's here today who's thinking about what x y and z so and so did to you and you're thinking i can't forgive them because i can't be in relationship with them anymore so you're already tempted to tune out of the message because you don't want where the message is going to end but the word of god shows us that forgiveness does not require friendship let me break it down but the text says if you confess your sins confession is an act of repentance repentance is turning away from what you used to do so the bible says if you confess your sins he is faithful and just to forgive you of your sins and then cleanse you from all from all unrighteousness this is not just sowing us showing us the the result of forgiveness but the process of forgiveness what do i mean in order to reconcile with someone it necessitates even with you and god repentance which means that you don't have to forgive you don't have to reconcile with the people who hurt you although we are commanded to forgive them let me illustrate it joseph meets his brothers when he meets his brothers again joseph could be like yo on-site joseph from that moment he's no longer little joseph who they threw in the pit he's no longer little joseph that they used to mock and tease now this is joseph hnic this is joseph who has risen to the height of power in all of egypt he is second only to pharaoh he is in control of everything pharaoh holds the title but joseph holds the power joseph is managing every aspect of what is going on in egypt and he sees these 11 10 rascals show up who used to pick on him in the past joseph has all of the power and all of the ability to be like yo guards get him however joseph does not respond this way because joseph has already forgiven them joseph has received enough context and understanding from god that he has extended forgiveness to people he hasn't yet seen and when he sees them he's living in forgiveness but he does not move to reconciliation because he is not sure if they're safe for reconciliation so what does joseph do he sees if they're faithful and little before that before he tests them to be faithful and much what is joseph joseph begins to test them to see if they're the same people who threw him in the prison and who who sold them to slavery and and and tried to get rid of him so joseph begins testing them take notes church he doesn't say i forgive you come right back into my warm arms no no no he says i'm gonna test you to see if you're safe for reconciliation i'm going to test to see if you have repented which makes you safe for reconciliation this is why joseph then accuses them of being spies and he's listening to them in their native tongue to see what are they saying now that they're in hot water this is why the second time they come back joseph puts a cup in benjamin's bag the youngest brother the other son of rachel to see are they going to take this opportunity to sell benjamin to slavery the same way they sold joseph into slavery this is why joseph testing to see if they are still operating off of jealousy puts them at a table and treats benjamin better than all the rest before he reveals who he is to them it is only after he tests if they're safe for reconciliation only after he hears their words of repentance that joseph then moves to reconciliation the truth is that some for some of us the reason why we have not forgiven some people is because we have misunderstood forgiveness we have associated forgiveness and reconciliation because that's what god does for us when we repent but we have missed this aspect of repentance in our relationships and we keep going back to hurtful and abusive situations forgiveness does not require friendship last thing we're going to draw from the text today is that your trauma is not your truth your trauma is not your truth i don't know what you've been through i don't know what you've experienced but the way trauma works is that it threatens to warp how we see the world and how we see how we understand ourselves it is so powerful that it can cause us to see blessings and to recognize them as curses and it can cause us to see curses and think that their blessings but your trauma is not your truth see joseph says something really interesting here in the text he says it was not you who sold me into slavery but it was god who brought me here now joseph has not lost his mind joseph is not crazy joseph is is not in denial joseph has recognized that the trauma of his experience is not the fullness of the truth of who he is in god because your trauma is not your truth so he says it was not you who sold me but god who brought me see there's a difference between what happened and the meaning we make of it and we can't make accurate meaning of our mess without the divine perspective of god let me say that again there's a difference between what happened to you and the meaning we make of it and we cannot make accurate meaning of our mess without the divine perspective of god let me bring it a little closer some of y'all your parents got divorced that's what happened but you interpret it as it being your fault that's the meaning you make of it some of you your parents uh were never present in your life but yet you interpret it as you thinking that you're not worthy of love and belonging some of you were sexually assaulted as children so you think that your body should just be available to everybody everybody who comes your way or you might think that you that you don't deserve love from anyone there are some of you who have experienced church drama and now you interpret church as a place where ministry doesn't happen but power takes charge some of you have experienced some things where where you need to differentiate between the experience and the meaning that you have made with made of it the truth is is that your situation is not your revelation joseph is able to look at his brothers and say i know what happened y'all hated me y'all sold me into slavery but that is not the fullness of my truth because my trauma is not my truth joseph is able to look at them and say although you sold me god was bringing me that although you meant it for evil god was working it for my good and i need you to catch what is at stake for joseph here if joseph had not been healed throughout his experience he would have rejected his brothers and his family would have died in famine see this is not just about you but this is about the family you have the friends you have that are depending on your healing for them to be saved so joseph realizes that his trauma is not his truth paul articulates this for us in second corinthians four verse nine where he where he says we are hard pressed on every side but not crushed we are perplexed but not in despair we are persecuted but not abandoned we are struck down but not destroyed you missed your shout paul is showing the difference between situation and revelation he's saying my situation is that i'm hard-pressed on every side but my revelation is that i'm not crushed he's saying my situation is that i'm perplexed but my revelation is that i'm not in despair he says my situation is that i'm persecuted but my revelation is that i'm not abandoned he says my situation is i'm struck down but my revelation is that i'm not destroyed your situation and your revelation are not the same thing you are going through a situation that is not the fullness of god's revelation in fact god is using the situation in order to give you a greater revelation that if you just trust in god if you wait on him you'll recognize that your situation and your revelation are not the same thing for somebody here your situation is that is that you're like lazarus but your but lazarus lazarus revelation is that god is able to raise the dead the situation for daniel is that he's in the lion's den but the revelation is that god is able to shut the mouths of lions the situation for the three hebrew boys that they are in the fiery furnace but the revelation is that god is able to make their faith fire proof your situation and revelation are not the same thing your situation might be that you got is that you got is that you got divorced but your revelation is that you can love again your situation might be is that you got sick but your revelation is that god is able to heal you your situation is that you lost your job but the revelation is that god provides your situation is that you got disfellowshipped but your revelation is that you have fellowship with the father your situation might be that you're struggling to deal with and love traumatized people but your revelation is that sometimes it's just traumatized people hurting traumatized people and the further revelation is that god is using the church to reveal your issues you don't want to hear that you talk about i'm triggered being triggered is an opportunity for you to go back and deal with what hurts you what if the reason why you're triggered isn't just because this is in a safe space but also because god is like there's some things you haven't dealt with and instead of making everybody bend to your needs it's time for you to go back and do some work here it is some of you are saying pastor okay okay what do i do i know i've been hurt i know i've been trauma i know the reason why it's hard for me to even dream of the future is because of what happened in the past pastor what do i do i need you to catch what happens in joseph's life joseph supported potiphar's vision for his house even though joseph's family mocked his dreams joseph accepted and served the imprisoned butler and baker even though his brothers rejected him joseph planned for and provided for egypt and and the surrounding nations even though his brothers were always trying to take from him here it is don't miss this the path to healing is giving others what you never got i know i know for a lot of us we've been waiting right i'm just waiting for that phone call from my dad i'm waiting for my mom to reach out i'm waiting for my brother my sister whoever that person i'm waiting for for that person who was in a trusted position to come back and make it right and and can i just give you the truth for many of us nobody's coming joseph's healing was not dependent on his brother showing up he found a way to heal without them and too many of us while we celebrate turning 30 are not ready for 31 because of what happened in 25 and we're waiting for people who when kingsborough was 18 when kingsborough was 20 when kingsborough was fifth to come back and make right what they made wrong we hope that they do but if not we've got to heal without them too much is at stake for you to be waiting on unconverted people to get converted and come back and do what is right you're allowing your peace your future your path your destiny to be held up by people who didn't know how to love you so although they left you they're still in control of you that's the reason you can only sit on one side of the church and not the other that's the reason why you're serving some ministries and not in others that's the reason why some of y'all saying i'mma stay on on on youtube but i'm not coming back into the building joseph began to give what he never got and as he gave what he never got he was healed his brothers didn't support his dream he supported potiphar's dream his brothers didn't didn't protect or serve him he served and he helped out the butler and the baker in prison god is trying to tell you today stop waiting on other people for you to be healed yeah there are some things you never got you think life would turn would have turned out different if you had gotten them and god is saying you never needed them for those things yeah you never got that yeah you never had those experiences come to me for those things and as you become a conduit of god's love mercy and grace to others you will have exceedingly and abundantly more than you ever missed out on you just might have to be what you never had for yourself somebody here has realized that that god has been calling you into a new season he's been calling you into a new season in your life a new season in your marriage a new season in your family a new season in your job a new season for this church but we're so caught up on what happened in the past what happened when you were twelve what happened when you were young and those strings are still bound around our ankles [Music] you see the new season you know it's possible but the past is so present that you don't know how to move into the future and there's somebody under the sound of my voice today where god is telling you that you need to let go of these things that have been managing you you need to reframe some of these things that you've interpreted there's a difference between what happened and the meaning you've made of it somebody here today recognizes that the rejection that you had in your life was actually god's protection somebody here realizes that god is calling you to forgiveness he commands us to forgive but forgiveness does not necessitate friendship not everybody you forgive is safe for reconciliation and somebody here today is recognizing that your trauma is not your truth there's a difference between what happened to you and the meaning you make of it so god is calling you today he's saying listen i need you to be for others which you never had for yourself as you become a conduit of god's grace you will receive what you've been looking for i know that this isn't easy because we have these things called coping mechanisms defense mechanisms that make us feel safe and it's a scary thing to leave those things and to step out on faith but if we're honest most of us who are just living by our coping and defense mechanisms we're not happy we don't have peace we've just learned to survive so god is working on your heart today i don't know who that person is that hurt you what they did or what they did not do but god is saying that's enough of them controlling your story step out on faith i don't know how good you've gotten at your defense mechanisms and your coping mechanisms you might be a master at these things god is saying leave these things behind and step out on faith into vulnerability some of us have to leave that tough guy persona and i gotta handle persona can't nobody mess with me persona the truth is you're just hurting and you do that to stay safe so if this is you and you no longer want the past to continue managing the present you no longer want the past to keep blocking the future and you're saying god i know i know things need to change it's not even about what i'm doing right now some of the sin i commit today is because of what happened in the past i've just i've just been trying to numb myself and you want to ask god god begin to heal me today help me to be for others what i never had so i can experience your healing power if that's you i'm just going to ask for you to stand to your feet i want to say a special prayer for you if you know there are some things in your past and you're like i don't want this anniversary to end and i keep reliving this history god i want to move forward in faith i want to move forward trusting you if that's you just stand to your feet i want to say a special prayer for you you know what it is you know what you experience there are some people we got to forgive people that we feel like they don't deserve our forgiveness they don't deserve our grace and god is saying don't wait on them but move forward in faith go ahead tabitha [Music] [Music] oh [Music] thou hast [Music] is [Music] it is [Music] my soul it is [Music] let's pray father we have been so held up in what happened in our past that lord it has been blocking the blessings you have in store for our present father we've become so accustomed to some of these chains that we don't even recognize them anymore [Music] so god today we want to come to you [Music] for healing however that healing comes lord we're we're seeking you in prayer we're seeking you in your word but some of us today we need to make a commitment to go see a therapist some of us today we need to make a commitment to go get some accountability [Music] father it's so hard to come to you with some of these things because we're so used to avoiding and ignoring our issues that we don't even remember to bring them to you anymore they've just become a part of they become a part of how we live life but father we pray that today you would bring back to our hearts bring back to our memories the things that we need to surrender today to you and god we don't only surrender our pain we don't only surrender our trauma we don't only surrender our grief but god we also surrender our self-medicating and our coping mechanisms that we have been using to distance us from those things father we recognize that if healing is going to take place in our lives [Music] that father we have to give you both the pain as well as the mechanisms we use to cope and father we have to allow you to lead us in the process of restoration so god we surrender it all to you today the things that happened in our childhood the things that happened in our teenage years the things that happened in our early adulthood the things that happened this year god god we laid at your feet we no longer want to be controlled and managed by the things that other people did [Music] but we want to walk in the freedom and liberty that only christ provides so father heal us today restore us today strengthen us today make us self-aware today give us the wisdom and the courage to not only stand on a saturday but to go see a therapist on a monday to get some accountability on a tuesday to get up and try again when we fail on a wednesday and to recognize that healing is a process that you will be faithful to bring us through god if you did it for joseph who was sold into slavery joseph who was rejected by his brothers joseph who was falsely accused of sexual assault joseph who was forgotten by the butler and the baker god if you did it for him then lord we know you can do it for us as well [Music] so lord we pray that the healing that we so desperately need that we would find it [Music] and anything else in our life that has supported us being crippled lord that you would break it away from us whether those are relationships or jobs or positions or responsibilities all of the things that we've been using to cover and to avoid our issues god take it away so that we can walk in freedom lord bless this church bless kingsborough as they move into this new season this we pray in jesus name amen amen [Music] the trump shall resound [Music] is [Music] with my soul [Music] [Applause] [Music] eating [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] is [Music] kingsborough family thanks for tuning in today i'm here with us who join us online every single week and participate and those who come and dare to step out to be in the presence of the lord together with their brothers and sisters now heavenly father as we
