come on let's go let's go all right um so we've got a question for you right we want you to stay active all right okay and i really like how our people stay active in the chat yes we have a very great chat community i just want to tell you all that's right okay the question for today is when is the last time you apologized to someone all right what's the last time when's the last time you apologized to someone why are you smiling looking because you know it's hard everybody's looking at each other mothers and daughters when's the last time you apologized when's the last time that uh you apologized to someone oh i feel like it's probably our son and um i probably went ahead of myself and said he did something that he did not do and he uh gave me pause to reflect and i said my bad okay and that's big that's big oh yeah yeah especially a mother yeah okay yeah you yes i apologize i think i apologize to you i'm sure yes uh earlier this week yes from misunderstanding you you put ourselves into the sea of forgetfulness that's what somebody said this one said this morning good to be honest come on lead the way today we got to apologize it sounds like you're gonna have a good day tyree said yesterday yesterday glory to god we have some believers on here all right realizes that jesus is purposeful owning their stuff all right they are not all right jack you said this week this week all right it's probably two i'm talking about linda later that's a great man last night naomi made her wrongs right last night good stuff we're proud of you proud all right amber probably like wednesday probably uh wednesday thursday only a couple of days ago right right that's good anybody else yesterday that's yeah tell it like it it's great that's great everybody else's sure aaron was blessed by that oh michelle michelle two hours ago jesus you have the time come on all right nine months you apologized at 9 38 all right keisha blackburn okay you apologize for your cousin last week oh wonderful that's good lovely to clear that air i love it i love it and ayanda fantastic last night to god oh that's right good stuff this is wonderful apologies all right all right well our follow-up question is is it difficult let's be honest is it difficult for you to apologize yes or no yeah this is just a yes or no is that absolutely no judgment absolutely and sometimes it changes the difficulty level changes based on who you're apologizing now that's true right so we keep that in mind yes all right but for some of us it's it's more natural for others it's a little bit more difficult i'm not looking at you you you can't look at this natural difference okay no i was really speaking to myself yes yeah it's easier for you to apologize than it is for me oh yes yes yes and it depends on the circumstances sometimes i struggle okay natalie no okay no if i don't see my wrong you got to help me see it you know i'm just not here i'm sorry no no you have to look and see yeah you got it veronica thank you for your honesty all right it's hard for you yeah but practice makes perfect that's right i hear you yes but you did it you did it this morning you did it wonderful that's right you did it all right the spirit is moving all right it's difficult yeah okay all right good good girl no all right so easier for you to own own your wrongs and to make things right all right lisey or les i want to say it right okay my dude says yes okay it's difficult yeah yeah yeah all right tracy sometimes sometimes no that's real that's honest in all casts that's right all right sonia sometimes hey sister what's up sis it's morning all right all right who else you got come on come on medina depends yeah depends sometimes it depends on the situation yeah i get it i get it all right 1990. i remember this 1919 spider-man says i wonder if it depends all right yes it's difficult really disgusting it might be different yeah right okay it's not hard for you you should know okay no oh okay okay keisha conversation all right all right elena honestly can depend on who it is or why i'm apologizing that's right that's right like the lady you know i was borrowing her trash cans that's right we shared that uh a little while back yes what was that easy for you or well i would have liked to have done it without her catching me doing it and then i would just come over and say you know i've been using your trash cans should have been like oh it's okay and i've been like oh yeah well right right but i had to look at her knowing that she had no foreknowledge that was boring that's right we're all good though we're all good we're all good anybody else hard easy so so it depends all right bernadette says no it's not good good bernadette thank you for your honesty all right all right elaine says no all right very good very good so we got some people who it's a little bit easier velma says no once i come to my senses really you can get intoxicated with anger sometimes you gotta calm down yeah right the lay of the land that's right tanisha says yes all right we hear you from tokyo we hear you all right all right well one more yes hey what's up kim what's up fam no all right good stuff good stuff all right well you know whenever if we talk about apologizing there is power in giving an apology it's it's recognizing the wrong that you've done whether it was intentional or not um because it's not always about intention it's it's really about impact and today later on we're going to talk about that so i'm glad that you've uh joined us thank you for sharing a little bit of your life experience with us and with everyone in the chat in the comments section church is not just remember there's not a broadcast in the sense that we're just watching yes this is something we experience together together and even though it's virtual we want to create virtual community so we want you to stay active in the chat today even as we're getting ready to go to prayer if you would you could just share um in an appropriate sense the things that you want people to pray for to pray for you there is power in prayer when god's people join in prayer so we want to remember as we said last week all of those precious refugees those who are coming from afghanistan fleeing that country and uh as they are settling in this country and other places we need to pray for them and pray for us that we will be hospitable please god please uh that we will take care of those who are coming here to get away from uh the taliban rule and to settle in a new place we're praying for our brothers and sisters from afghanistan as well as haiti and those who are still suffering from the natural disasters and political upheaval there let's remember our haitian brothers and sisters and then finally for all please remember we are still in a pandemic oh my god and there are people who are passing away every day from covet 19 there are families that are still struggling let's continue to pray for them that god will be with them yes amen yes did i forget any other new orleans yes that's right new orleans with a tropical storm in fact in in here in atlanta we're receiving a lot of people coming in from louisiana because their homes have been destroyed their cities have been flooded let's continue to pray for them and pray for the city that we we receive them well all right whatever prayer requests you have you can put it in the chat wherever you are we encourage you to pause on whatever else you might be doing while you're listening and to join us in prayer as we get ready to pray our first lady stephanie's going to pray for us as we go to god and tell him that we trust him in the midst of everything that we're going through in this world so let's pray together god we thank you for another day we don't take for granted that you saw fit to wake us up this morning and for those who continue in their rest lord and leave behind loved ones we pray that your spirit of healing and hope will be with them yes people are losing loved ones every day god and sometimes it seems distant and sometimes it gets very close but as believers we intercede for those we know and those we do not know because we know that the power of god is able to do exceedingly and abundantly yes lord although it's a time of grief and sadness for many people you are able to transform this season into a time where people can meet you and you can change their lives forever god there's so many things that are going that's really going wrong in the world today every time we turn on the news every time we turn on the radio there is death and destruction all around us god may we not become immune to it but may we go deeper yet may we find ourselves increasingly in your presence yeah receiving your power receiving the forgiveness of sin pardoning others that you have as you have pardoned us yes looking for people to love who do not know what it is to be loved just as they are god right now you need your church to stand up and stand out lord you need us to to take all the sermons that we've heard over the years all the messages that you have been downloaded into our spirit and now be walking vessels demonstrating the goodness of god while we're in the land of the living yes god we don't need cliches we don't need to just tell people they need god we need them to see god in us yes please be with us through the good times and the bad yes forgiving us of our many sins yes pardoning our shortcomings god help us to get out of your way and allow you to have total control even in a time of chaos yes god this is the time we need to shine bright not because of any good thing we've done but because of what you want to do through us yes so lord we wait on you and we we want to be of good courage while we wait on you lord there are brothers and sisters out there right now who do not know where they're going to stay they do not know what they're going to eat they don't know if they have people who are there for them please god help us to be sensitive in the spirit so if you are asking us to do a new thing if you're asking us to go beyond our comfort level yeah we will open up our hearts and minds and go on your errands and then people will say why did you do this how did this happen and we will be able to tell them jesus did it yes he did it through me but make no mistake he still moves and has his being in the earth today lord i ask that you just be with those who are about to give up on you they're tired of church they're tired of hypocrites their child are tired of just all this religious garbage in their minds and lord we're asked that you show your back parts to them and show them what it really means to love and to be with someone in good time and bad lord show them that you'll never leave them nor forsake them help them not to get mad at you because of what other people may do or other people may say may they see you god whether it is through us or through your spirit coming to them right now help them to hang on in there by the grace of god we love you we're glad that we don't have a god of stone or a brick but a god who is mighty a god who is all-powerful a god who is all able and we thank you for choosing us to be your children lord help us to be all that you need us to be so one day soon we can go home with you forever and ever amen amen amen thank you lord praise god amen the spirit of the lord is here it's here the spirit of the lord is there right where you are right now serve an omnipresent god yes and right where you are god wants to speak to you god wants to heal god wants to deliver today so thank you for joining us for this worship experience we want to let you know revision church atlanta we we don't just gather for worship virtually we want to make sure that we are doing good work in the community taking care of not only our people but all people we want to make sure in a special way that our young people have what they need yeah so a few weeks ago we met and we talked about creating an educational a scholarship fund for our young people that are going to college so once you take a screenshot of this all right we're gonna have 500 scholarships for first year full-time college students all right okay the deadline is september 24th all right we're going to put that slide back up just to make sure everybody gets that all right we want you to make sure that you uh you understand that you're going to have to fill out an application it's not based on your grades or anything it's just for our first year full-time college students okay in order to get the application we're going to put this at the bottom of the screen you need to sign up for our email we send this out once a week yes and you can be able to sign up right now sign up today for this when it goes out on monday we're going to attach the application so that you can be able to get the application and turn it in all right we want all of you who qualify to be able to get that you need to fill out the application so text email to the number on the stream and you can be able to sign up for that all right that's for our revision church members we're piloting this and the next year we'll plan to expand it a little bit more all right text email to that number we'll send that out on monday you fill out the application and we'll process that make sure that your institution that you're enrolled in will receive you'll be able to get that 500 to help towards tuition books or whatever else you need all right your church cares about you we want to make sure that you are well taken care of we also want to let you know that we've got church picnic tomorrow yes sunday sunday all right tomorrow at grant park church picnic grant park okay take a snapshot of this we start at 1 pm we'll be there till 5. all right bring your pop-up tents bring your picnic chairs you want to bring some snacks we're going to have food for you we're going to have games we're going to have a dj it's going to be a lot of fun we also want to let you know the best place to park i think we're going to put this on the screen is the additional parking garage at 759 boulevard southeast so please make note of that take a screenshot that's number one that's right that's the best place to park that's option number one all right this is the that's the first option all right uh there are some other places around but uh we've kind of scouted it out yeah and that's the best place for you to be we do hope that you'll join us tomorrow you don't have to be a member of revision church in order to come if you're in the greater atlanta area come on back you watch you worship with us come on by we'd love to have you all right so remember that's tomorrow one through five now in just a minute we're going to have one more thing before we go to praise and worship we do want to talk a little bit about the fact that we are in this pandemic and that we really need to practice the best safety protocols so in just a minute we're going to have a medical doctor join us on screen very very close friend of mine to talk about this but remember we're gonna put the slide one more time for the picnic we want you to remember tomorrow one through five one through five all right tomorrow one through five and we are going to have to make sure that you are there all right glad that you're gonna join us all right so i'm massed up i got dr ray andrews with me or one of my very closest friends like a brother from another mother and uh dr andrews thank you for being with us good to be here it's good to be here thank you for having me that's right that's right uh dr andrews is uh i call him a famous doctor in huntsville alabama uh so dr andrews thank you once again for being with us ah we gotta be professional call you dr andrews right here all right so why are people still getting coveted 19 even though they're vaccinated because that's a question that a lot of people have okay so i'm vaccinated i can still get it why are they still getting it okay so you're referring to breakthrough infections okay um let me define a breakthrough infection that's an infection uh of with cover 19 after you've been fully vaccinated and that's two weeks after full vaccination okay so a breakthrough infection really uh is something that we expect to happen there's no vaccine that's a hundred percent effective even the measles mumps polio the vaccinations we have commonly found highly effective none of them are a hundred percent effective what the vaccines are advertised and what they found from the studies what we tell our patients is it's going to reduce your risk of infection your risk of hospitalization and your risk of death and severe illness okay that's where the money is so i think that if i can reduce my chances of that then that's something i want to be a part of right okay okay good stuff so do i need the vaccine if i already have a covet 19 infection um yes you do um absolutely okay getting the covet uh vaccine would help in giving your body a jump start if you do get infected okay now it gives you a high level of antibodies and a high immune response if you get infected you may not build a great response so if you have a poor immune system your immune system may not respond very well which means you may have a few symptoms but your response will not produce a lot of protection or a lot of antibodies okay also an infection only holds you for maybe three months we're seeing some get a little longer but they give you immunity for a few months where vaccination gets a much more robust response and you get a longer level of protection as we're seeing what we're seeing right now okay okay if you have been if you've had the cova 19 infection you are twice as likely to be re-infected than is than if you had been vaccinated oh not that i did not know correct okay okay that's important for everybody i hope you're all taking notes that's important okay uh probably last question who needs a booster shot cause we're hearing about this booster shot right and i know that there's i know next week we're supposed to be talking i think to a pharmacist that's gonna help us to discuss some of the myths around like what's in the vaccine right but there's this whole thing about the booster shot who needs a booster shot for the corona uh vaccine who needs that well right now there's no uh guideline by the cdc to say everybody needs a booster shot okay um what they're looking at are those people who have a compromised immune system meaning their body may not have made a great uh response to the vaccine okay so those groups are people who may have had lupus cancer patients transplant patients uh some type one diabetic or just a poor immune system because diabetes can affect your immune system so right now the guidelines are saying eight months after your last vaccination okay um you are eligible to get a booster okay we're still doing studies to see if those in the normal population with the normal immune system even need a booster that time may come but right now there's not a recommendation okay okay great great great man i appreciate it i i think this is helpful i hope this is helpful for you i believe it is um and we're going to be doing this every week for the next few weeks just dispelling some of these myths and giving good information to replace misinformation all right so thank you so much doctor thank you appreciate it stay with me i'm gonna i'm gonna announce the praise and worship now absolutely yeah yeah you're part of the worship now all right he's a praise and worship leader too don't let him fool you all right don't don't let the mask fool you but uh revision church atlanta you might say well why are we doing this in worship right i i hear this all the time on the news right i'm people are telling me about the vaccine all that we do this because as a faith leader it is my responsibility as a pastor it's my responsibility to give you the right information about all of your life not just your spiritual life but all of your life all right and so we want to make sure that you have the right information so you can make the very best choices so i hope that you will do that please stay safe please wear your mask indoors even if you're vaccinated especially if you're not please be careful all right thank you thank you we're getting ready to worship our praise our praise team is about to worship lead us in worship so please join us sing along don't just watch sing along if you know the songs if not just keep listening you'll catch it let's praise god together as we worship and then i'll be back to share the word today i will bless the lord o my soul and all that is within me come on let's shout let's dance let's give god praise this morning why don't you lift your voice with this revision church family come and let us sing come on and put your hands together come and medicine come and let us sing come and let us sing to the king of kings come and let us sing come and let us sing come and let us sing to the kingdom one more time come and let us sing thanksgiving one more time [Music] thanksgiving enter his court with praise his is to the lord our god enter his face with thanksgiving and enter his courts with praying these words oh oh oh [Music] is one more time me let us see so we lift our new song to you look this morning oh god we sing unto the lord because you have been so good you love us with an everlasting love we worship you oh god this morning because you loved us before we first knew you oh god you loved us and you chose you made a decision that you would love us oh god and so we have no desire this morning of our own we we we are called by the love that you first show to us oh god and we simply say oh god we'll love you forever we'll love you forever because you first loved us jesus hallelujah come on just lift your worship to the lord right now right where you are just begin to sing before the lord and say i love you i love you i love you i love you you're worthy [Music] just a simple song i love you [Music] i love you forever [Music] forever [Music] i'm gonna bring my sacrifice to pray i'm gonna lift my heart to you oh god sing it one more time [Music] come on and play before the lord come on and play before the lord while you're at home come on enlist your worship to unknown come on give him your love give him your affection we adore you o god we bless your name o god there is no one like you there is [Music] receive this glory receive this honor receive the praise we'll foreign we'll worship forever we praise god today thank you thank you praise team for leading us in worship today and today that's what we came to do to praise him forever today is you've tuned in as we said earlier this is not just another broadcast not just a an experience to have online but this is indeed worship and an encounter with god and that's what we hope you feel today you sense that you experience that today the very presence the loving the healing presence of god today as we get ready to go to the word though i do want to say a special happy birthday to our minister of music who's over our music ministry minister david tropher amen happy 50 the big 5.0 my brother god bless you uh you wear it well you own it well step into it with full confidence that this next season will be greater than the last we're grateful for you and for your contribution for your life who you are god bless you and we love you happy 50. today as we get ready to go to god's word i want to encourage you to turn i'm just going to let you know we don't have to put up on the screen yet but we're going to turn to james chapter five that's where we're coming from james chapter five and in james chapter five today we're gonna share a word that i think is vitally important is indeed something that is has been a long time coming something that is absolutely necessary i do want to give some preamble some preface to this message today because in a reality this message is going to speak to a few different groups of people in different ways for some of you this word is going to be liberated it's going to give you freedom it's something that will be refreshing for you to hear for others of you this word is going to be frustrating it's going to be frustrating because i'm going to say some things that are going to make you want to react rather than respond and then the third group of people this is going to be excruciating it's going to be excruciating for you and you're going to be tempted to just tune out in fact maybe log off and go to another broadcast because if you're not careful you will misread misinterpret and misunderstand this word okay having understood that i was inspired last week early last week i woke up early the spirit really impressed upon me with no audible voice but a very deep impression in my thought pattern that i needed to speak this word and do this today so i come with full confidence and courage knowing that god has ordained this but i've been praying for you that you will receive this amen wherever you are and so james chapter 5 verse 16 and in james chapter 5 verse 16 we're just going to read that one verse in james 5 verse 16 i'm going to read today and talk from the english standard version and here's what it says therefore confess your sins one to another and pray for one another that you may be healed the prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working now i want you to focus on part a the first half of that text therefore confess your sins one to another and pray for one another that you may be healed today i don't necessarily want to preach or give a sermon in the classical homiletical structure today i really just want to talk very plainly candidly with you on the subject it's our fault it's our fault would you pray with me father by the power and presence of your holy spirit would you simply comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable we ask it in jesus name amen amen one of the hardest things for any institution organization with authority to do is to apologize not just for organizations and institutions but for many of us we in our own personal relationships struggle to own what we have done and to make our wrongs right with the person we have offended or hurt today i want to stand as a representative if you will of the church the church being my denomination the seventh-day adventist church as well as the church universal including all denominations and faith traditions under the banner of christianity okay and today i want to do something that i think is long overdue and absolutely necessary because the church in its history the church down through the years both through its teaching and its practice has hurt a lot of people a lot of people who today are not in church are in church physically but gone mentally those who are frustrated angry upset and disappointed and today i simply want to say to you it's our fault it's it's our fault and before before you rush to come up with reasons or excuses for certain behaviors that i'm going to call out today certain practices and experiences that people have had i want you to sit in this very uncomfortable seat for some of you yes i will give no explanations no caveats no butts or however because the reality is a lot of people have been hurt yes and it's our fault angry with god indifferent to organized religion or even opposed to it some people no longer believe in church and have taken it so far as to no longer believe in god yes some people left the church got one foot out of the church some who have stayed are apathetic about church not committed to serving anyone because they're so busy licking and dealing with their wounds that have been dealt by the church and it's our fault and you're going to hear me say that over and over again strategically and purposefully because we have dodged the blame for years decades hundreds of years we have dodged the blame and put it on culture put it on practice put it on family tradition put it on this is just the way things are and we always find a way to get out of it stay with me today it's our fault it's it's our fault we we own agnostics and atheists do you not know it is said it is a popular saying that atheists are children of the church that those who no longer believe in god is because they met someone who said they knew god but did not act like god it's our fault and today i want to unpack for those of you who have been hurt who have been traumatized who have who have suffered pain and even abuse at the hands of the church i want to talk to you and simultaneously i want to talk to those who perpetrated the hurt and the pain and the abuse it's our fault and i hope that you hear this today because we can never get to healing until there is confession the reason i had you read james 5 16 i understand the original context of this and we only really use this text because it's tied to when someone is sick that we pray over them right and we heal them in jesus name and james the brother of jesus says that when you're praying for somebody who is terminally ill or very sick and you anoint them you need to confess your sins one to another don't miss this the context is confession one to another comes when someone is sick and may i suggest to you that the church is sick the church is sick there's something wrong with us there's something wrong on the inside that the church is yes glorious things happen in church yes people are blessed in church but the reality is for a lot of people if we are honest the church is sick the body has something going on in it the head is fine because christ is head of the church but the body is sick and the body cannot be healed until there is confession one to another so today i'm not really preaching i'm just confessing i just want to confess it's our fault it's our fault because number one we have we taught you to be confused about who we really are and what we really believe okay it's our fault we we've confused you because we said one thing okay but then we couldn't really substantiate it in the scripture although we taught you since you were young that we are people of the book but in reality we were using oftentimes other books to substantiate our teachings when in reality it wasn't coming from the book which is the bible y'all better stay with me today y'all don't worry don't worry i'll deal with the emails later the reality is we've confused you we taught you we taught you that that you are what you eat and what you wear oh god we taught you that we taught you that you are what you eat and you are what you wear what do you mean preacher we spent so much time talking about your diet and your dress that we give you the impression that what you wear and what you eat is the totality of your worth your esteem and your contribution to the human family am i telling the truth somebody i don't see you on the chat we taught you that you are what you eat and what you wear so we judged you as unworthy of our acceptance for wearing little pieces of gold in your ear or stuff around your neck or putting ink in your flesh we misquoted bible texts that had nothing to do with tattoos and told you that if you put ink in your skin that you are actually practicing idol worship oh god we taught modesty watch this with a one-sided and a near-sighted view we taught you modesty was no jewelry so we ripped a text out of its context in first peter three verse three and told you that you should be wearing jewelry because peter said you should not adorn yourself with gold with gold but but but we stopped there and didn't kept reading when he said what about the costly array or the costly apparel so you've got people who in your church look at you crazy because you wore a necklace or jewelry but they drove in luxury cars to the church they walked in with fancy expensive hats they took the brooch instead of putting it in their ears they pinned it to the lapel of their jacket and then looked down at you and said you were sinful the devil is a liar that's our fault we taught you a lie we taught you that first peter 3 verse 3 is about not wearing jewelry that's not what that text says it's talking about internal modesty my daughter my brilliant daughter writes her message magazine uh sometimes and she wrote she wrote just an article that i think is just about to be released about modesty and jewelry and the church and one of the things she found in her research is that modesty is never about what you wear it's always about how you act towards people but we taught you modesty was what you wore this is why we encouraged a duplicity i'm going there today a duplicity so that i don't wear this but i can treat you anyway and that's our fault we we we taught you that we taught you that you are what you wear and what you eat so therefore your your home your worth is now wrapped up in what you don't do and what you don't put on and so some of you actually picked up the bible for yourself and didn't depend on a preacher to tell you what it said and when you read it you discovered that's not what james or peter or john or paul or jesus was talking about and now you free but your freedom is being judged by people who are still in the shackles of culturism rather than biblical christianity i just said something you better stay with me today it's our fault oh god so we've alienated generations of people who wanted to display their creativity and their artistry just like they do with beautiful clothes so brother you get to wear an expensive suit but she don't get to wear a little bitty pearls and yet your suit draws more attention to you than her little bitty pearls around her neck that's our fault oh goodness we taught you this we taught you duplicity and hypocrisy i told you some of you are going to get them uncomfortable stay with me today we taught you duplicity and hypocrisy church leaders elders deacons and yes even pastors said one thing and lived another kind of life i'm not talking about human beings making human mistakes and messing up from time to time please don't go there that's not what i'm talking about don't hide in that i'm talking about people who live a double life okay they were nice at church somebody knows what i'm talking about but mean as satan at home yes they were family life leaders at church or pathfinder leaders at the church but they were unfaithful to their spouses without remorse they talked about holiness at church but were unholy at home i can't tell you how many grown adults in their 40s and 50s and 60s that i talked to now who have been so damaged by the church not talking about the building i'm talking about the people who were telling them one thing from the pulpit but living something else not even at home in the parking lot that somehow between the pulpit and the parking lot they lost their holiness and now they're using four letter words that are not found in the bible now they're saying things to people and treating people as though they're less than and we taught you that duplicity we taught you to live in the shadows and to act like a christian while you're with the saints but not really live like jesus every day we taught you how to be two different people in the same body we taught you watch this how to be consistently inconsistent oh god you learned how to act at church there's a whole lot of actors the church has given birth to performers we taught you how to perform on a stage for people to act one way and to be another way at home and that's why your children please please please stop crying about your children who don't go to church anymore please put away your tissue and stop talking about how my kids don't love jesus and they're not in the church anymore could it be your duplicity told them to leave that your hypocrisy made them not made them nauseated at the sight of a church building could it be that it is it is what you did at home that made them want not to go to the house of the lord we taught you how to play a role without ever becoming the person you were trying to betray or portray at church which brings me to another thing that's our fault a double standard of dealing with sin okay so young women hear me my sisters young women were told to dress a certain way and to shun the very appearance of being a sexual being but we let young men express their toxic masculinity yeah we celebrated that and to espouse we told young men to espouse their sexual prowess and when young men one when young men got girls pregnant we dragged the young women before the church we might not do that anymore but back when i was coming up we used to do that you would bring the young women to a business meeting i can't tell you as a child what it was to watch young teenage girls 16 17 be dragged in front of the church at a business meeting watch this with people who don't even know your name and they're making decisions as to whether you should be disfellowshipped they never spoke to you in the hallway they never said anything to you when you were hanging out coming into the church they don't even know your name but they get to sit in judgment and tell you you are no longer part of this church because you did something that they did but they never got caught we never said anything we we dragged the woman in there and we were so mean with it can i tell the truth today i'ma tell it anyway we were so mean with it that when the sister when the young sister got pregnant by a brother in church we didn't say nothing to him but we punished her we didn't even have baby showers for them we wouldn't even provide the bare necessities for your children because we call we have the nerve the audacity to call your children mistakes illegitimate you had some churches that wouldn't even dedicate babies that were born out of wedlock because somehow the unborn child had something to do with these two knuckleheads getting together and having sex don't blame the baby we did that that's our fault and while we drag that young woman into a place of shame and isolation sorry my sisters while we did this to you we failed both you and the young man we failed to show love to you young women in the time you needed it the most we left you vulnerable we failed you and we also failed the young man because we could have shown him love through showing him that his masculinity is not defined by only one member of his body we could have stepped up to show the young man what responsibility looks like but because the church is run by dudes run by men we ain't gonna say nothing to that brother because if we were in his place and had his opportunity we would have done the same thing and by the way we messed up when we pressure when we pressured young people after going through that situation to run and get married almost as if marriage would be the step to kind of wash away the sin that they've done thus complicating the situation because they got two young people who weren't mature enough to have sex anyway and if they weren't mature enough to have sex they sure mature enough to be married so now we give that child who had nothing to do with it to immature parents who are married to people they don't even love that's our fault because the pressure to get married that wasn't on them that was the mama that was the daddy that was the elder that was the pastor saying throw this camouflage over your sin that's our fault but i'm not even through because now that brings us to patriarchy and misogyny that's our fault we taught little girls we taught little girls that in the most important hear me church y'all stay with me y'all say yes i know i know some of y'all getting liberated some of y'all frustrated yeah some of y'all it's really excruciating right now hang with me uh uh i want you to get this we taught little girls notice i'm not saying little boys we taught little girls from the time they were in sabbath school that the most important community they will ever be part of which is the church does not value them the same way we do little boys we teach that in very small but very real ways we talk little girls we teach them that that their contributions are not valuable as men even though they make up the majority of the church yes we do and we are often most we are often sidelining women who are oftentimes the most committed members in serving and in giving and we do not give them an equal seat at the table of decision making in the church there are some churches that only in the last 10 years finally got a female elder just one and you around there patting yourself on the back like you done done something and the reality is the women have been carrying the church the whole time we took women's ideas we took women ideas and acted like they were ours took credit for their anointing took credit for their ideas and then have the nerve to tell a generation generations plural of women that they could not be elders church board chair women and they certainly couldn't be ordained ministers of the gospel to lead congregations as pastors and yet strangely enough we're using quotes from a woman who was anointed to be a prophet which arguably theologically has a higher responsibility than even pastors so if god could trust a woman to be a prophet why can't he trust a woman to be a pastor i'll tell you why because men run this thing oh okay so why we say it's theological it ain't theological what it really is is cultural what it really is is patriarchy what it really is is misogyny and in essence we told women watch this that god loves them but he cannot trust them with spiritual leadership at the highest levels okay okay and then we turn around and body shame you oh lord and we talked about modesty and dress reform never applying it to men so while i was teaching at oakland university a few years ago i was in the preaching class had men and women in there and one of the sisters came to me one day because we would have different people preach one of the young ladies in the class came to me she said dr knight could you i i feel a little uncomfortable saying this but i need to say it can you please i know you talked about and this is this is on me she said i know you talked about dressing appropriately to preach you told us that we need to you know dress appropriately for the class when we do our video sermons when we preach brother class she said but could you say something to the brothers she said because our sisters our skirts you know and i didn't talk about the length of the skirt because i don't think a man should be telling a woman that so i didn't do that but i said just dress professionally and i'll leave it up to you to know what to do well the sisters knew what to do they came dressed in their very best it was the brothers that were a mess she said could you please dr knight tell the brothers quit wearing such tight pants could you please tell them to stop drawing attention to their crotch could you please apply the same principles of dress reform to them as you do us we did that and that's our fault but not only that we we really messed up when it comes to sexual abuse oh boy now revision church knows that i've talked about this and preached about this before but for those of you who are new and in this context i think it's important to talk about and since we have not talked about it for an eternity i think it's time we drill back into it again we we we really hurt you my sisters and we really hurt you my brothers because abuse goes both ways she does we didn't believe little girls and little boys when they said huh they felt uncomfortable around uncle so-and-so and we dismissed them we dismissed what they were feeling as the holy spirit was speaking to them yes to tell them without them having the language to say i don't feel good around the pathfinder leader oh jesus please stay with me today because this is truth that you need to swallow i have not been to any church i have not pastored any church that did not have this situation my god no you have not i have pastored in florida in georgia and california there is not one single church jesus i got some of my former members looking at me today there's not one single church where this did not take place we didn't believe you as a little girl my sister we didn't believe you as a little brother when you as a little boy my brother when you said i don't feel good around this person or he makes me feel weird we downplayed oh god we downplayed what the holy spirit was trying to tell you to tell us and we let this happen because of our own hang-ups and our lack of understanding about sex and appropriate sexual expression we let this happen oh y'all better hold on for this we let this happen because we were so desperate for someone to lead the pathfinder and nobody would say yes but the guy who likes to be around children he said yes and because nobody would be available to do the pathfinders we let the pedophile dress up as a pathfinder take our kids on campari and then we wonder why kids throw up the middle finger at the church and say i'm done jesus jesus just because people like being around kids doesn't mean they should be around kids thank you we value but here's why we did it it's our fault we valued our ministry more than your body we valued our church reputation more than yours we value our programs more than we valued your spirit or your future so we sold off your we sold off your sanity so that we can have our programs we sat down and we let you struggle with self-esteem and self-image and your sanity because we let you we let them twist your mind into thinking you are an object when you're really a child of god that's on us that's our fault and then when we when you did have the courage i'm talking to you because there's a whole lot of you who are out there when you did have the courage and i just spell the voices of the people who say well why didn't you say nothing a child doesn't have the language to say what's happening to them a teenager is shocked when they are being pinned down to the ground by an elder or a deacon who's telling them it's gonna be okay they don't know what to say and we let church leaders twist your mind that's on us and then we wonder why you struggle with sexual identity sexual decisions in and out of different dysfunctional relationships it's not just their choice it's not just a bad seed it's what the church sat down and watched happen to you and then we had the nerve to say well we'll just pray about it oh god there's some things we are never called to simply pray about in fact some of y'all might not like this i don't think there's some things you should waste time praying for because if you know what you should do yes the bible says this those who know to do good but do it not to them it is sin and we have sinned i'm almost through i'ma let you go but uh the church is not just the building the church is not just the church leaders the church is also the people and the people include the parents oh merciful god and parents who beat whipped and abused their children to act holy without them teaching what holiness is that's our fault i want to be clear i'm not simply talking about corporal discipline or whether you should spank your children that's not this discussion i'm not saying it's wrong for your parents to have disciplined you in some way that's not what i'm talking about but i can tell you this when you spank a child for not being dressed for church on time oh god i i'm talking real stuff this is nice these are conversations these are these are people that i know people i went to church when you spank a child hear me i don't care about your culture hear me today i don't care what island you come from hear me i don't care where where you if you spank a child for not being dressed for church on time or here's another one because they didn't know their memory verse oh jesus or because they fell asleep in family worship that you chose to have at 6 00 a.m in the morning or they fell asleep at your church service that lasts four hours jesus and you spank them for that that's not discipline that's abuse and some people are not in the church today and it's okay if you don't like it parent it's okay if you don't like it a fully grown adult it's okay if you think i'm coming a little bit too close that's the job that's my role yeah that my role is to please save me a seat i'ma sit right down beside you and tell you the truth because the truth is i want you to understand every blow you gave that child every blow you gave that child for things that they didn't deserve it for for not knowing their memory first not being dressed on time or for just being a child in church every time you did that what you didn't know you were doing is with every blow you were instilling into them that holiness hurts that to serve god always has to be painful and i'm not talking about trials and tribulations and afflictions that the bible talks about because that's the stuff the world does it shouldn't be inflicted by you some people are not in the church today because we beat them out of the church we whip them out of the church we yelled them out of the church and the anger and resentment and angst i understand of immigrant communities was taken out on their children or the desire to belong and to have your family look like a good christian family caused your parents to do things to you in order to please people my god and i understand because i can hear you right now i told you some will be frustrated and you're frustrated because you're trying to come up with reasons as to why the church did this and i understand here's one that i know you're thinking right now well our parents were from a different generation they didn't know any better i get that i hear you i hear you but or uh pastor you don't understand that's all they know that's the only example they had when you discipline you just spank you grab the pot spoon and you just go for it that's all they had i get you but i want you to get this not having a good example is not an excuse because if we're believers the holy spirit existed before your parents ever did you can't tell me the holy ghost didn't tell you put down that pot spoon come on you can't tell me the holy ghost didn't tell you pray before you go in that boy's room you can't tell me the holy ghost didn't tell you count to 10 calm down so that you can discipline rather than abuse we don't have an excuse it's our fault and so we run to the pastor pastor pray for my child he's not in church and what this pastor is doing is i'm praying for the parent that they will apologize to their child so that the child can realize that the god their parents says they're serving was able to get through to their parents and the reason i'm saying this today is in this pandemic oh yes people have been given a liberty and freedom from the building of church and the people who are the church and there's a whole lot of people who are deciding now that they don't have to sit in the pew with their violator now that they don't have to sit in the pew with their judge okay now that they don't have to sit in the pew and watch the hypocrite on the pulpit okay now that they don't have to be in the presence of people who don't even know their name but always telling them how to live now that they got some freedom they ain't coming back they're not coming back and then finally there is the injustice and indifference regarding leaders a lot of people left because they see that leaders who sin get different treatment than the rest of the people okay that happens we allow certain people to get away with sin because of their calling or position or title so if a church elder is sleeping around he is dealt with differently than the young person in the church and god help us don't let it be a pastor or a denominational leader oh boy because there's a different way we deal with that oh yes instead of having them confess their sins and own their mess we move them and transfer the pastor to a smaller church for a while not so that the person can be rehabilitated but so that the people will forget so that then we after they forget we now promote them to a bigger church y'all better hear what i'm talking about today we teach when we do this when we transfer the problem we teach the congregation that when you sin and hurt your family and your community the answer is to run that you never have to face the consequences of your sin my god you run from your responsibility and you run from your accountability and let me be clear in full disclosure i am a pastor yes i believe that pastors hold a high position and a high spiritual authority that is given by god that is unquestionable for me i believe that pastors should be held in high esteem because of their calling but if we have a high calling we also have a higher responsibility yes we do i'm not talking about the past and messing up because the pastor is a human being a pastor can mess up make a bad mistake because they're not emotionally healthy at the time they're not careful they're not humble i'm not talking about that can we be honest today okay i'm talking i'm not just talking about my denomination i'm talking about cross denominations oh yeah but it's certainly certainly it it does include us yes it does i'm talking about serial adulterers and predatory preachers who don't just mess up once because it's a mistake but plant themselves in congregations as shepherds that are really wolves praying on the sheep i'm not talking about a mistake a human weakness and making your wrongs right and then and then what really hurts the victims is that you church people oh god i'm talking about y'all oh god you church people go online yeah and show support for the predatory pastor oh jesus i'm the predatory church leader but you don't say nothing about the victims so y'all on facebook talking about praying for your pastor praying for your preacher ain't nobody said anything about the women and don't tell me you don't know their names you don't need to know their names if you don't post say i'm praying for the victims yeah and their families and the children but when we post only support for the pastor for the sinner we actually encourage the sin we co-sign and that's called iniquity [Music] so the church has a culture the church has a culture of protecting the predator and isolating the victim we give our beloved pastors are past by quoting texts out of context saying stuff like well all have sinned and come short of the glory of god let me correct you right now don't take that text and apply it to predatory people thank you don't don't take that text and apply to predatory people all have sinned some of not all of us are capable of doing that so many times it's not the same thing the truth is is that public sins of preachers and pastors has diminished the view of the church in the eyes of those who have suffered so much pain from the church and then you talk about evangelism evangelism really we want to bring people to this jesus like this jesus and we're wondering we talk about they just don't want to know the truth no they want to know the truth they want to see you live it first and finally i know i said finally before but i got i got to leave this one thing um it's our fault oh god it's our fault because we've done all of that we've either done it or saw it and said nothing okay we either co-signed it or enabled it we either perpetuated it or we simply turned a blind eye to it and the final thing we did was we hurt you by not teaching you that what you by only teaching you what you should do and what you should not do okay we taught you about the law but we didn't teach you about grace in effect it's caused you to have to one of two responses you either end up not caring about how you live in your decisions because you are so tired of being told what you can and cannot do i'm talking to somebody or there is the opposite those of you who stay you end up trying to please everyone and you never end up happy in your relationships you feel like you are never good enough your identity gets wrapped up in your performance we did that to you and it's our fault we didn't teach you about something called grace we didn't really teach you about god's ability to give you more even when you deserve less we didn't teach you that you could be saved by jesus now not by what you do but because of what he's done we didn't teach you that god's grace is greater than all your sin we sang it but we never believed it we're saying blessed assurance but then we turn around and talk to you you can't have blessed assurance we taught you a form of religion that goes like this i saw this on the internet today uh the other day i messed up my dad's gonna kill me that's the religion we taught you when in reality biblical christianity says i messed up let me call my dad glory to god so we have you running from a god that we created in our own miserable image instead of inviting you to see a god who created you in his loving image hallelujah god hallelujah so today jesus some of you are about to leave some of you are fed up some of you are done my god you've left mentally and spiritually your name's still on the roll but you don't really attend in person or virtually only reason you're listening to me is because somebody said you probably need to watch this and i'm glad you hung in here but here's what i want to say to you you got trust issues you don't even believe what preachers or church leaders say and i get it i absolutely understand because when the church doesn't teach the grace of jesus we teach you you can't trust the church so to everyone who's been hurt manipulated frustrated angry abused controlled forgotten by the church i am sorry i haven't talked to anybody above me i haven't talked to denominational leaders i'm not sanctioned to represent them i'm representing myself as a pastor who represents the structure of spiritual leadership of the church i am sorry that's our fault you deserve better you are worth more jesus proved it when he died on the cross for you you are a human being and you should have been treated humanely yes you are valuable not because of what you do but because you are here hallelujah i am sorry we failed you and even though i didn't get permission from the world council of churches or anyone else you deserve this confession and you deserve this apology and most importantly you deserve change amen and by god's grace i hope you get it i want to pray for you [Music] because i'm not making an appeal today i didn't get to finish today i'm going to have part two next week because next week i want to break down and share with you how we got here today we talked about what the church has done i want you to understand not so that you can give the church a pass but so that we can all hold the church accountable for generations to come tune in next week for part two but i want to pray for everyone who's been hurt yes if you've been hurt by the church in any one of the ways i've enumerated or others that we haven't yet talked about i just want you to say that's me whether you're still in the church or not that's me just put in the chat that's me that's me that's me and what i want to do is pray because that's what james 5 16 says confess your sins one to another that you might be healed hallelujah healing does not happen unless we first acknowledge yes and apologize yes i'm praying that god heal your hurt and please hear me this ain't no ploy to get you to join the church despite everything i said you are where you are and i trust the holy spirit to do things that i can't do hallelujah i just want you glory to be healed yes god i just want you to be okay yes god i just want you to be free from the past i just want you to be able to live the life god destined you to live and not live in anger and frustration whether you come back or never come back i want you yeah to be healed hallelujah let me pray for you thank you god father today we confess that we the church we the people not the institution we the people who make decisions who open our mouths who who practice things who teach things we have hurt your children [Music] and lord we know that we are imperfect we know that we're growing but we also know the power of the holy spirit has been trying to get us to do things differently for a long time and we confess we have been resistant recalcitrant we have been full of pride and arrogant yeah we talked about what we knew but we didn't live what we knew lord we confess to you it's our fault we've been wrong you gave us everything we needed you gave us your word you gave us the holy spirit you gave us angels that excel in strength yes god you gave us wise teachers and mentors you gave us some good examples and lord we ignored all of it and we hurt your people and we're sorry and god we pray and we believe that the same grace that heals us after we've confessed yes it's the same grace that can heal your people today yes lord so father for the person for the young woman for the young man for the older gentleman the older sister who's been so scarred by the church whether they left they're about to leave or they're just hanging in there god would you heal them oh mercy god yes from what happened to them and i pray god yes lord that your healing power yes lord would restore their peace and their joy yes god yes i pray this yes jesus healing over every kind of hurt oh glory and we thank you in jesus name amen thank you lord hallelujah god bless you stay with us as pastor houston is going to come and lead us in worship through giving these types of messages don't lead us for celebration or shout but what the bible talks about repentance yes the beating of the chest as they would do in the ancient days to acknowledge our wrong let us collectively yes god mourn over what we have done and who we've lost [Music] and ask god that the next generation glory will be the generation that does not give way to tradition or culture but walks in the way of jesus amen god bless you as pastor houston comes as we worship and i hope you'll join us next week for part two of this same message god bless oh thank you jesus thank you god praise god praise god can we just just thank god today for how the lord just moved and used pastor night what a well-needed sermon for for all of us and also a spark to a well-needed conversation listen again we hope that you share this sermon and that you tune in with us for part two next week listen this is an opportunity for us to engage in giving uh this is an opportunity for us to participate through giving again we encourage you to give a tithe and an offering we want to say thank you to each and every single one of you all for your continual giving i mean like none of this would have been possible if it was
