Going on vacation as a kid - - we always went somewhere
where my parents could find materials. I think this somehow influenced me. Coloured me, or shaped me
in some form. Made me a collector.
A finder of things. It has something to do
with being closer to nature. You know, to adopt and wear nature. To understand its language. To accept that we just borrow it
for a while. I love that thought,
that the world is not about us. We're just spectators. And I think that's what it's all about. Trying to bring people closer to nature. These are the materials.
The ingredients. I always try to find materials
that have some kind of irregularity - - or some kind of true shape
that is natural. That isn't manipulated
or shaped by hands in any way. Fantastic! Everything starts with the materials.
The materials dictate the process - - that you can only do by listening
to what the material wants to do. - What do we have here?
- Nice, right? Beautiful. Wow! Check the things, look at the stones. - It makes sense that it is oil.
- Yeah. This is so beautiful. This is something we have refined
a method for doing. Really working with the material - - rather than forcing it
or manipulating it too much. This is really nice.
I'm super happy with it. Can we use some of it in a new way? We talked about using some of these
for something... Or have one stone be the piece
instead of in combination. If we could find something
cool to support it. Nature offers
the most amazing materials. There's so much we can do.
It's amazing. So to me these are artworks, you know. Telling a unique story, each of them. But in art, you have to go too far.
You have to go across the line - - to figure out where it is. It's a matter of perspective as well. A very common misconception is
that to be perfect - - is to be simple and pure. But there's perfect chaos in nature.
There are perfect complications. True beauty can't be found in something
clean, nice and pure, but in contrasts. This is pretty incredible. My parents started this,
so in many ways I think it... It's in my blood, in a way. Look at this.
It's going to be incredible. So it's only on the back...? It's only on the back,
and it shouldn't lie down like this. When it's done, you can sort of... - It's going to be amazing.
- Do you think it's too matt? - Should it be more shiny?
- Yes. But it's up to you. We'll bring this one in.
It'll take some more work. This is if you want to brag. So the wire is revealed
and shows even more. If this is to represent us, what are
we missing? A gigantic amber piece. What about these? - Use these. That would be great.
- We ordered more amber, right? This language
that my parents have evolved - - over decades of working
with these materials - - I've intuitively adapted over time. This language will continue to change - - and I will change it
into something else, probably.
