[Music] that's right we are case lobbing my civic again i was up here last february i think at andy shop here in wisconsin where we case off the civic for the first time and now we're gonna do it again um because of a change in class regulations because i'm changing contact classes that allows aero now um i have to run a different engine setup so we're going to put this car in the dyno first see how much i currently make and then with the fully stock k24 that we're going to put into it we're going to see how much that engine makes and compare the difference it should be a little bit less power with a fully stock engine but we're going to get as close as we can and we don't know how close that's going to be until we dyno the car so first things first let's get this car in the dyno [Music] [Music] what's going on it makes less power now than it did when uh is that a year ago you're a little over a year ago right this is what happens annie leaves the car with me for a year and it loses 28 horsepower well as it turns out this car is not making as much power as it was making 14 months ago there's a lot of different variables that go into um you know dyno tuning and stuff and it looks like we're only making 239 horsepower which is like what is that 29 horsepower less than it made back in february 2020 you know it's a warmer day i'm running on different fuel from a different gas station you know engines change tolerances and stuff over time andy said if we retuned it we could probably get close to that 260 number again but that's pretty cool to see that our baseline number is actually a lot lower than i thought it was 239 which is now the goal for the new engine um so yeah we'll see if the new fully stock k24 engine that we put in here can make the same if not more power we're gonna tune it for this environment which is probably a better environment for track use in general uh maybe i was actually down on power all season last year when we actually go on track because we tuned it at like 15 degrees which it is never 15 degrees on a track day it's like 115 degrees so uh yeah all in all good things we're gonna make more power when we have arrow this car's coming together [Music] [Applause] is what you can't explain [Music] out with the old non-class legal frankenstein engine and in with the purebred fully stocked k24 there are a few mods that we can do to this engine internally within the class rules so we'll tear the engine down and go through everything first we are not allowed to do head swaps porting shaving the head or cam swaps but i am allowed to do any bolt-on modifications that i want so ben's pickian wants more power so we have to get rid of all this slow stuff for faster stuff need to convert a lot of stuff over to the usdm stuff we're using an rbc intake manifold which is the 8th gen civic si little better flowing intake manifold different oil pan different oil pump so you can rev it a little higher in addition to the bolt-ons all of my accessories on the engine have to be converted over to usdm spec thankfully advanced auto parts carries everything i need and we can have them deliver right to andy's shop maybe like two of them two of them maybe three depending on the price okay so this is a type s pump but we have to clearance the part of the block we have to cut away a little bit of this pump so these were made for a k20 [Music] [Applause] the type s oil pump isn't the only class legal mod that we can do to this engine we're also allowed to change the cam gears so we're going with a 50 degree vct cam gear to allow for more tuning this is the factory cam gear on the rb engines which is only it maxes out about 25 degree cam advance we're gonna swap in this guy which allows for 50 degree cam advance give a little bit more torque really it doesn't actually make a lot more peak power more usable power still [Music] with the small modifications made to the engine it's time to seal it up and this time we're going a bit extreme with the baffled oil pan after seeing ben blow up his evo motor i've gotten the unit 2 elite pan this pan has a 6061 billet flange that's been tig welded together with six compartments and 11 trapdoors to contain the ridiculous 9-liter oil capacity it has some nice baffle to it which is going to help keep a nice consistent oil pressure while on track when ben is going through the corners it's got all these little trap doors for left turns right turns acceleration braking keeping oil right near the pickup this oil pan is so huge it looks like half the size of the engine 9.5 quart capacity andy is bolting on the remaining accessories that need to go onto the engine some parts knew and some parts were reused from my old motor [Music] meanwhile i'm going to clean up the engine bay so i can spot any future potential leaks and so my engine bay stays looking fresh this is really what i like doing just you know cleaning everything up perfecting refining yes unfortunately my engine bay isn't as clean as it once was the oversized tires i've been running have been rubbing so hard they've burnt some of my engine bay paint off so we'll need to respray some of those sections but before we do that i'm going to hammer out the wheel wells to make sure i don't rub through the engine bay paint again [Music] believe it or not the advanced auto parts here locally in stevens point um actually mix paint into spray paint uh spray cans which is perfect for the scenario because i'm just doing small little touch-up stuff so believe it or not we've got championship white it's perfectly mixed for my color match before the paint even dries andy just about finished up with the new motor not even 24 hours after the last motor was pulled the new motor is going in the car this is the right map sensor this one or is it this one oh it's this one oh oh yay wow that's the most anticlimactic start hey it gets really quiet [Music] after some small tweaks on the tune andy got the engine to run smoothly but there's still a few more things that need to be done before we can get this thing on the dyno and see how much power it makes all right radiators in [Music] hey another five minutes and then change oil i'm adding a better radiator overflow tank and a radium catch can to help keep my intake air clean with this engine i'm doing a ton of small little mods that will hopefully all add up to netting slightly more horsepower over my competition [Music] we're far from done now but it's time to hop over to the dyno and not only see how much power we make but spend some time pouring over the spark advance and cam timing tables to squeeze out as much power as possible i'm hoping we hit 230 to 235 ben wants to hit 240. we'll see he's been right in the past we've made more than i thought so [Music] 228 first pull first pull with only changing a little bit of fueling keeping vtec at the same point which you can obviously see is way too late you get this huge bump i haven't changed anything else yet which i don't know how much more power is left there but even on our naturally aspirated engine tuning is everything when it comes to making the most out of your engine got a bunch of mid-range back we're just over 35 pulls on the dyno now and we've run out of fuel 10 gallons should do it but who knows vanna keeps on pulls might have to make another run for gas later [Music] [Applause] about 71 ethanol each one of these is a pull now that we've got the tune as dialed in as humanly possible it's time to start messing around with some things mechanically and see if we can make more power at 6900 rpm [Music] we'll start by seeing if my k-tuned intake is restricting any power by running without an intake at all [Music] everyone seems to think no air filter no intake pipe or whatever might be better because there's less restrictions but it's actually false 18 intake is better than no intake the working theory is that the air needs to be directed and smoothed out going into the intake manifold to maximize velocity so we're going to try a short intake pipe with a velocity stack on the end [Applause] [Music] no intake was an 18 wheel horsepower loss a short intake with a velocity stack is an eight wheel horsepower gain eight horse eight and a half horse from 55 to seven ish 75 so i mean that's it's clear that changing the intake setup will affect horsepower a lot thankfully running with an air filter on the end didn't seem to change the horsepower number but when we added the second intake bend we lost about one or two we've lost even more when we route the intake down into the bumper assuming that's because it's more closed off from free airflow so my best move will be to make an opening in the bumper or headlight to ram the air in and to keep the intake pipe short with minimal bends glad we took the time to figure that out as we were certainly able to squeeze out more power well it turns out that the car made more power than when we came in here with the other engine obviously that other engine will make more power if we re-tuned it and kind of just freshened up things a bit um it had some pretty old spark plugs and stuff like that in it so i think that's why it was down a little bit on power but i was probably down on power when i was competing as well um a little bit so i think all told i'm gonna have more horsepower this season than i had last season because we've really dialed this car in we did like 40 pulls on the dyno and we've gotten so much more mid-range power um i mean the peak powers is about the same which is great but i mean mid-range we're looking at 20 horsepower 30 horsepower gains under the curve so uh we're gonna have higher speeds on the straights and we're definitely gonna have higher speeds around the corners with all that arrow so all told we're gonna go pretty fast this year i'm really excited um but yeah we're not done yet we got more to do here's the part where i'm going to get a little bit crazy rather than running an oem hydraulic power steering pump that will rob the engine of power i'm going to try to run a much more efficient electric power steering pump and since my car is still underweight in the class i'm going to be adding the functional weight in the dead bottom center of my car to keep my center of gravity low [Music] custom stuff takes a lot longer to make work we're running the lines down underneath the car and up into the rear back seat where andy will fabricate a mounting bracket but unfortunately we can't film andy's fabulous fabrication skills because we have to take a quick six hour round trip up to minnesota to buy another go fast park all right so we're driving three hours north west of here to minnesota to pick up a cut open imported intake manifold should get us like five more wheel horsepower maybe that's what the internet says could make nothing um but we're gonna do it anyway so uh we've left andy shop to make a quick run up to minnesota six hours round trip hope hope it's worth it i think it'll be worth it my man just hooked me up literally a parking lot deal basically the same manifold that's on my car currently he cuts it open and then ports out all the runners in the intake manifold i don't think you really see it we'll show you when we get back to the shop but basically this intake manifold should flow more and make more power huge shout out to revline for getting me this sbs ported intake manifold on such short notice the internet says that this is the hot setup so i'm excited to get it on the car and see if it makes any more power over my non-ported manifold [Music] i know i've done everything that i can this is this is everything that the internet has told me the best way to make the most amount of power on the stockings so i've done everything i can we're matching our street intake power with intake bends let's put a straight pipe intake on with a velocity stack and see if we can make more run a straight intake pipe over 250 wheel horsepower i can't believe it we did more pulls just to make sure it wasn't a fluke and every time 250. all right so 250-ish is kind of like the real the real conclusion here yeah yeah high 240s low 250s that's phenomenal yeah i'm i'm kind of impressed we got that much power out of this yeah i mean that's only 10 realistically probably only 10 horsepower less than i had last season and that's also 10 more than i came here with yeah yeah the when you came here the engine i don't know if it was um the tune probably was off by a little bit maybe some other changes from when you're here last that affected that stuff as far as the engine concerned there's there's no other way to make more power on a stock block i i don't have any other ideas for a stock block stock head besides throwing some nitrous or something at it that's not allowed yeah yeah there's a lot that's not allowed in this class as far as power is concerned right i think 250 is probably the most anybody regardless of engine or platform in this class 250 is probably the most yeah yeah i think you're gonna have the advantage there just gotta do the driving part now yeah show me stuff show me something show [Music] yeah it should be it should be a solid engine i think it'll run all season no issues so yeah hopefully let's work on the suspension next yep never ends always making improvements all right i'll be back next week yep sounds good later
