[Music] [Music] hmm hey guys my name is luke and this is my 1991 nissan 240sx it's a little broken right now as you can see some parts are falling off but it's okay we're in the shop today and we are hopefully gonna get the car running and driving yeah and i'm gonna [Music] help [Music] so we've got a lot of stuff laid out here a lot of parts laid out here and if we look under the hood here uh there's nothing in there um so we got a lot of work to do this is uh this is the motor right this is a it's not a k series that's a k a c yeah this is a ka out of an s14 the bottom end is an s14k and then the top is s13ka uh we have some s13ka cams in here so it should make an extra 10 horsepower over stock not that it's already been lost because this motor was bought for 200 so i have no idea what the background is on this thing but the goal is just to get it like nice and refreshed you know and and running and running and yeah yeah running is important having it having it move is important this is kind of a weird project because we're like starting halfway in it this is luke's engine that he took apart obviously his car that he took apart it's been sitting like this for like roughly a year i mean he's been doing stuff to it but it's been about a year so we're kind of starting like right in the middle might be a little bit confusing for you uh watching this kind of starting out because you don't really know what's been done what hasn't obviously the engine is out of the car but the internals and everything are all together luke's friend did put this engine together so i'm not really sure what's going on inside the engine so we're kind of crossing our fingers and hoping that everything is good to go in there we just have to put the engine transmission and all that into the car and hooked up so that it'll start and run so that's the goal that's the plan um and yeah let's continue on i noticed that your cam caps aren't actually seated onto the head so i think that's the first thing we're going to want to tackle here because this probably isn't even uh yeah that's not torqued i think we're going to want to start from this side since that side has already got pressure and kind of work our way out this way tighten them down so the caps are actually seated put a torque wrench on this and uh hope that nothing else in the engine is incorrectly torqued [Music] all right so we got the water pump on and we got the alternator as well as the valve cover and now it's time to do the spark plugs or these from advanced auto parts at 9 30 on a friday and they showed up two hours later at my door dude nobody does two hours shipping advance is out here doing two hours shipping on the ka24des they have a lot of extra cool lines and a lot of extra vacuum lines that don't need to be there for the motor grab some 5 8 hose some little caps get this simplified so we only have to run a couple hoses on it instead of like the 10 or their stock all right so we removed the hood because obviously there's nothing in here and there probably will never be anything in here but i'm going to try to route this body harness back into its factory location i took it out when i painted the engine bay because i didn't want to paint it with it in there while ben is going to hook up the hoses to the engine and hopefully we can get some tag teamwork going on and then it should be done faster [Music] all right we got the engine on the ground we got to connect the transmission up to it uh so we're gonna put this flywheel on this is a looks like a lightweight flywheel loop is that right no idea it looks lightweight uh we're just gonna throw this back on without resurfacing it because we don't have time for that i mean it's stock power so you know all 20 wheel horsepower is not gonna mess up this clutch hey give it the generous 110 okay 110 is that what should we dyno this to find out what it actually makes exedy includes a new throw bearing in their kit um but you need to press it on and we don't have a press here and uh we'd have to go back to the other garage and that would just take too much time so i'm just gonna throw this back in like that let's be honest luke is probably gonna blow the clutch before he messes up this drop bearing yep there we go why are we lifting the car up luke i'm too low uh i tried to be a hot boy and uh my 15 my little baby boy 15's on my uh 240 caused it to be pretty low the sub frame is literally so low that the engine hoist won't clear under it so we jacked it up so the engine hoists will clear under the front subframe moral the story don't be a hot boy don't be a hard boy these are the things in video you watch and it's like super quick you just drop the motor in but in reality this is taking like 15-20 minutes yes hey ben what are we doing here nothing just uh installing the engine that's all [Music] okay well your frame rails aren't uh they are perfectly straight uh i've never seen it under a lift so i have no idea what it looks like under here 240s on the left now and we're going to take a tour through the museum of this 240. first up on the tour is this bent in gas tank because this car was probably driven over something because it was too low because all s chassis guys are too low oh right here uh the frame rail has decided to do a rainbow uh rainbows are good though so we can just uh that's a positive no biggie yeah it was supposed to be like that straight on that side no big deal yeah okay yep that's corded this thing probably will pop soon that probably needs to be replaced [Music] go wide open throttle oh yeah that opens all the way [Music] beautiful i'm not even lying this is the seventh time this week they know me by my first name we got this battery from advanced auto parts okay well we're not done with the wiring but just got a ground wire hooked in there ground wire hooked up there and there's a ground wire hooked on the [Music] alternator in this car ran previously the fuel pump was hardwired into a switch on the uh dash he had a bypass with these wires here this red wire was going to the ground and then this black wire here was the positive what we're dealing with here now in three two one go hey there we go it doesn't look like you have any leaks here that's good fuel rail is good still gaskets are good that's good i was worried about that you smell that fuel though that looks wet luke not in the good kind of way it could be either the ring here or your lines i wish you could smell in the camera while we smell here in person he's strong 4d experience what it's like to work on an s chest i don't think anybody wants to experience that so what are we going to be fixing first exhaust more exhaust patch because i have a bad exhaust more exhaust patch more exhaust patching oh did i not mention exhaust patching more more exhaust patching [Music] your like exhaust stuff dried on there yep now i get to cover it with this tiger tape tiger tape yeah pretty sick [Music] four days this car went from literally nothing to literally probably running hopefully it's dry if the cylinder walls don't collapse from themselves within the first five seconds of this car running which i am totally like expecting so if this car runs for more than five minutes i'll be happy like i'll legitimately be very happy i don't know the history of this motor i don't know if it's gonna explode at any second so i'm prepared for the worst not getting sparked i'm not seeing any power actually come into the coil pack hopefully the worst will not come and i'll be able to drive this car and live out all the memories of initial d in my own little car give it a crank all right like crank it over yeah okay it won't fire it off it runs dude well you don't even have a few having fuel pumps in my yet dude how did the car run the fuel pump's not even hooked up that's just residual fuel oh my gosh nice oh it's so cool [Music] so when you're building a car on a budget you don't always have to cut corners and uh the perfect example of that is this coia rad that i bought in the most recent video with ben's rotary rx-7 he installed a coil rad in his car this is a dual pass and flow same kind of design as ben's if it can keep his rotary cool i'm sure it can keep my little ka cool you know i think some assistance would be required oh but i'm filming luke sorry i'm sorry oh yeah all right all right i'll put on i guess i'll put it on this tripod here in hell it's gonna just vibrate in your foot well perfect all right [Music] let's bleed [Music] [Music] bro you got nothing try it again your motor has zero compression on cylinder too at least i know you have fuel uh i looked into your intake mission there's nothing clogged in there and there isn't uh you definitely have spark which you confirm with the timing light and you don't have any compression on cylinder two which could be for a number of reasons oh i brought an inspection camera so let's put that camera down that cylinder hole and actually look and see if there's carnage or what it could be maybe your head you didn't torque the head bolts down maybe your head gasket's just like never even torque so the air is just escaping right at the gasket tighten down your head bolts or just k-swap it luke did you tighten literally anything like bro bro yeah yeah yeah you see i'm moving the engine see how your cams aren't moving yeah so every bolt you touched on this car you never tightened down when you reinstalled or whoever did the work your friend or whatever i'm only calling people out but luke's friend what the heck man dude man oh my gosh yeah i mean this bolt is literally finger loose are you are you positive it's an interference engine yes [Music] i mean i will lock the timing down and everything because can't hurt to try but i am almost positive your valves have to be bent i mean if if if these valves are open like right here these two valves are open because the lobes of the cam are pointing down which means those valves are open and the piston is already almost near the top of the stroke which means that if it's an interference engine that piston will interfere with the valve and your valves are going to be bloop your valves are going to move not the pistons because the cams weren't tightened down there yep all right timed uh i mean yeah the cam gears and cam is back in place now but we still we haven't timed your distributor but in theory if the valves aren't bent it should run doing a compression test again before we try to fire it up all right stop 150 no way you got 150 on one cylinder let's check the rest well luke you don't have a healthy motor but you do have a running motor fast compression baby let's fire it up [Music] it sounds so much better it's literally like just idling so smooth i can hear from my office today dude i haven't even set timing yet truck motor man you can't kill him that welding dude luke your car literally won't fit out of the garage what can i say my exhaust has decided it does not want to uh release itself from the ground it likes to it likes to be married with the ground so uh i may have to give the uh the old exhaust the divorce from the ground i would like that i think i think maybe we should raise the car up [Music] uh [Music] [Music] [Music]
