good morning good afternoon good evening as we like to say here at shady acres wood shop howdy today we have junk wood this comes to us from me comes right from this property the piece is about eight by eight by four inches tall i call it junk wood because it grows all over this property and it grows for i don't know five or ten years and then it there's so many bugs you can see all the bug holes in it they just eat it to death and they fall over this will be my i think my fourth piece of this stuff that i've turned i don't particularly like it but you guys seem to like it i get all kinds of positive comments on the other uh the other videos that i did with this stuff so i'm turning this for you it does have a crack you can see that crack all the way all the way along there i have filled it with ca i don't expect it to do a lot of good that ca but it won't hurt either i debated about which way to turn it this side up make just a flat top bowl you can see it's missing a chunk of wood actually it's right here that's a piece of the pith that fell out of there when i microwaved this i always microwave these that have bugs in them anything that has bugs in it i always microwave it and i microwaved this for about three minutes so hopefully i've killed whatever might be in there if there's anything still in there i i don't know that i i don't really think i've run across any bugs in the other ones that i turned i think they've done their damage and left now some people just hate bug holes and i hear from those folks about that all the time this is not going to be a food bowl it's not meant to hold food this is just going to be a i don't know a container for whatever you want to put in it i don't recommend cream of chicken soup or anything i said i debated which way i was going to turn it you can see the color is here the heartwood that's that's the one good part about this wood it has nice color to it it's pinkish uh inside in the heart wood and you can see that pink in there and you can see it in here so if i if i turn if i make this the top i'm gonna turn all of that away as i as i hollow out the bowl i'll turn all of that pink color away so this is going to be the top it might still end up being a flat top bowl i don't know i might just flatten off that top it might be a natural edge bowl too i don't know i don't know until we start turning it what i do know is i'm going to take this over the drill press i'm going to drill a flat bottom hole right here in the middle and that's because it's not flat if i if i put a wood worm screw in there it's going to sit cockeyed like that and i'm gonna cut away a whole lot of the bottom that i don't necessarily want to cut away so this is what i've done i just used a forstner bit to cut a shallow hole so that i have a flat bottom for these chuck jaws to set against and then i drilled the five actually uh typically i'd drill a 5 16 inch hole for my 3 8 inch wood worm screw but because this wood is so soft i drove it uh 1 64 less than that so now i'm just going to thread it onto that woodworm screw and hope it holds i think it will we're going to be turning at 650 rpm 5 8 inch bowl gouge mask and face shield on it does have a lot of spalting as you can see you know i think i'll flatten off this bottom make a place for a tenon [Music] [Music] so we'll mark out for our tenon [Music] okay what kind of shape we're gonna go for i don't know why you asking me well i think i have a shape in mind we'll see how it goes i might see if i can pick the speed up any about 7.50 boy i forgot how dusty this wood is that's all the bug paraphernalia in there i mean it is dusty you see my shirt [Music] [Music] yeah that's pretty much what i had in mind i guess maybe i'll come back down here and work on the bottom a little bit time for sanding i'm going to start at 80 grit on my 2 inch disc with the lace spinning in reverse at about 320 rpm i'll show you what that looks like soon as i get my mask on well that'll be pretty easy i'll stand up through 400 and i'll bring you back when it's time to put some i don't know what kind of finish in a bit i'm going to go with howard feeding wax on this piece just seems like the right thing to do this always makes the wood feel so silky smooth and i put it directly on the wood i don't use a sanding sealer or anything i think the label says you can go either way so why go to an extra step especially for something like this it's not going to see a lot of use most likely i might have to brush some of this to get it into those holes wow that is some spalting and some pretty pink and i just have no idea what kind of tree this is it's kind of why i call it junk wood besides the fact that it is junk wood it looks nice well i don't know it just doesn't lend itself to being museum quality i guess as if anything i do is museum quality sometimes i just crack myself up so i've just put a little in this can and i've got this brush i'm just going to force it into all the bug holes and bug tracks and whatnot and then the way i'll get it out of there when i'm ready to buff this i will uh spin the piece slowly and i'll blow 150 pounds of compressed air on it to blow it out of these holes and then i'll take a toothbrush to buff it in in the hole and out of the hole like that and then i'll just take a a clean rag to buff the buff the rest of it i'm going to let this set up for half an hour i'll come out blow it out of the holes spin the lathe up to about 500 rpm and buff it with a rag and then it'll be time to start working on the inside and that's when i'll bring you back don't go anywhere i've turned around the piece and mounted the tenon up in the chuck i think for now we'll go with a natural edge we'll leave this edge as is we might change it as we go maybe it won't look as good maybe it doesn't look good now i don't really know i'm going to be using a 5 8 inch bowl gouge we're going to be turning at 850 rpm mask and face shield on you know i'm gonna go turn a fan on behind me here to blow some of this dust away this was the dustiest thing i've ever done let's see if that helps i hate having a fan on it's cold out here but i hate breathing the dust too [Music] i just want to see what that rim looks like so far well i better stop right about there or we will be taking down that the high spots like i say maybe we'll flatten it out in a while i don't know [Music] look at that dust nasty okay let's see natural edge or not i'm kind of checking out this crack that doesn't seem to be moving it does go all the way through there though if you can see it but i think we'll it does not go all the way through on the outside so i think we'll end up cutting it away yeah i i guess we'll go with the natural edge for now [Music] still [Music] i just want to check the bottom thickness here we've got about an inch and there's that pink color where we're hoping for down the bottom well i guess the thick wall is okay it's either that or or lose this i can flatten off the top and thin down those walls a whole lot more but i i kind of like the natural edge i [Music] guess i need to get up a little bit higher here [Music] [Music] time for sanding first i'm going to use my sandal flex to sand the top edge of this just kind of clean it up a little bit and also to round over this uh inside edge right here then i'll switch to my two inch disc at 80 grit and work up through 400 and i'll show you what both of those look like as soon as i get my mask on [Music] that looks a lot better already and then with the lathe spinning forward at about 340. that looks pretty easy so that's what i'll be doing for a bit and i'll bring you back when it's time to put some finish on there well the sanding wasn't too bad i'm glad for that i put too much stuff in my can here so i'm just gonna brush the whole thing and then i'll wipe it with a rag after i've got it coated and again this is the howard feed and wax that i'm using well i'm glad i went with the natural edge i would have just cut all that pink away had i gone the other direction so again i'll let this set up for about a half hour i'll buff it up and then we'll take that tenon off pretty quick pretty quick easy project which doesn't hurt my feelings for a second after that last one boy that was that was a tough one that was just tough wore me out okay see you in a bit [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] so so be sure you stick around at the end of the video so you can see the before and after shot to this little beauty if you'd share it around that would be terrific i'd really appreciate that thank you well here it is one junk wood bowl in the books what do you think it's just full of holes isn't it lots of spalting some pink color yeah it looks okay it's a nice little ball there's the bottom all finished up those bugs were busy weren't they there's a playlist with three or four others of these i'll add this one to it and put a link to
