brother troy weaver and uh brother philip watkins years ago and i'm gonna move on quick years ago this was about five years ago how many believe that god can still kill cancer how many believe that god can still perform the miraculous five years ago my wife was pregnant with her first child daughter she went to the doctor and she came back with some with a report doctor stolen told her that he had found some sales that look uh like it could be cancer now when you hear that report all these negative thoughts begin to go through your mind and you just kind of you know you don't know how to process this type of information because you just when somebody comes from comes back from the doctor you're not expecting somebody to tell you hey your wife has cancer but when she told me that i was like babe he's still a healer we didn't get sad about it we didn't get mad at god we i told are we going to pray about this we're going to fast about this thing and god is gonna give you a good report two months later she went back to the doctor and they just didn't know what happened i'll tell you what happened god did the miraculous because when god when jesus gets involved he is the way maker [Applause] i don't know what you're facing here today but i know that the same god they killed my wife and they probably heal a bunch of you in this place here today he can do the same thing all over christ is in this house i said jesus christ is in this house the spirit of the lord is in this house and where the spirit of the lord is there is liberty all over this place i want you to lift your healer is here the provider is here the waymaker is here so i feel like the lord wants to tell somebody something tonight there are some times where problems are chronic that means they don't go away you pray about them and they're still there and you pray about them and they're still there and their physical problems and their relationship problems some people have been praying about unsaved spouses or or problems with spouses and the days turn into weeks and the weeks turn into months and the months turn into years and there's a discouragement and there's a depression you can wonder where god is at in all of that but my bible tells me that the godly conduct of the saved spouse can testify and bear witness to an unsaved or a carnal spouse there are some chronic problems that god allows them to happen and just like was preached this morning you keep on praising and you keep on clapping and you keep on loving god i want somebody to lift your hands right now if you've got a need and the devil's told you that god can't hear your prayer i want you to lift your hands and say god i know you're with me in this house god i know that you're able and i don't know why but i do know who you are i don't understand the circumstances but i know that you're able and even if you don't deliver me you are still [Music] able somebody needs to hear that somebody's been in that circumstance a long time but there's a god in heaven that knows right where you are [Music] and he's going to give you the grace [Music] hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah oh let's put our hands was a breakthrough and the bible says they did it until the breaking of the day [Music] hallelujah it's the kind of a thing that when the high priest went once a year into the holy of holies that he would break through that veil and the bible says that is to say his flesh you got to break through the flesh if you're going to get to the outpouring of the holy ghost and there would be no breakthrough like the breakthrough that happened on the third day when the keepers of the tomb fell down as dead men and the stone rolled away and he rose from the grave triumphant and he broke through death and hell [Music] ah but that's not it ladies and gentlemen one day there's going to be a trumpet sound and when the trumpet sounds dead in christ are going to rise first and we that are alive and remain will be caught up together to meet the lord in the air so now you know breakthrough with my heart break through with my mind break through with my spirit break through with my soul trumpet and he broke that picture and that candle shone out that was the death burial and resurrection right there that was a precursor to the day when the enemies were all around us we'll be all around us and the trumpets gonna sound and when that trumpet sounds this picture's gonna break and the lights that on on the inside is gonna shine out and look well let me let me put it like paul said this mortal's gonna put on immortality and this corruptible is gonna put on incorruption and then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written oh death where is thy sin oh grave where is thy tennessee last weekend it was their northeast on southeast bible quizzing extravaganza there were teams represented from michigan to alabama so we did uh we did well i'd like before i go too far i didn't get a chance to do it last time i'd like to introduce all of our leaders and our quizzers if you would stan please um brother earl and sister nikki webb brother jeff sister melanie newton brother allen mullinex sister laura batista quizzers sinai griffis ann marie diaz drew fisher dana fisher and kirsten woods avery wright and juan beltran church these people have worked really hard they're doing the best they can we're working with them as best we can we appreciate your prayers we appreciate your support so this is where your efforts go and they're not in vain so thank you so from this past tournament we had two intermediate teams um one of our intermediate quizzers kirsten woods made the all-tournament team for an amended division congregate [Applause] and we had two of our um beginner quizzers juan beltran he made the all-tournament team but he doesn't have his trophy up here and avery wright was the highest individual scorer in the beginner [Applause] [Music] division [Music] and that team avery wright juan beltran and at the time was isaac verton they placed second in the intermediate division so second place trophy second place trophy and um very quickly i don't want to stand in the way of the word of the lord but i want to say something really quickly and i want to be deliberate um six of our seven bible quizzers are brand new to quizzes six months ago they knew nothing about bible quizzing or the concept so my my responsibility my focus and my commitment to god to my pastor and this church to the quizzers and their families is to help raise these young faithful respectful young christians it is my hope and my prayer that they can be built upon the principles of truth integrity commitment and character i pray that they not only build a godly respect for themselves but a sincere wholesome respect that is visible to those around them whether it be an authoritative figure on the job maybe a future boss or a future teammate or co-worker a classmate or even an individual within their home we are all i myself included or a work in progress so i pray that the indispensable nature of god will come upon all of us and help it become not second nature but more instinctive as though we were born with it so that as we go forward i know that if we build on these foundational principles that god will bless what we're doing god will honor what we're doing and he will water these foundational principles and the victories will come so stay patient with us pray for us as we go forward in raising these young kids into what we hope god because they're gone but if you think that felt good just wait somebody say just wait just wait till you get this holy ghost there's not enough good words to describe how wonderful the holy ghost is about yes and you could start a heritage if you didn't have one start it get in there get the holy ghost get baptized in jesus name get some teaching and you can have a heritage second to none because you have jesus in there i'm so glad i'm serving him i'm glad i could offer that to my children you know you can either make church a wonderful place or you can make it a dreaded place when my kids went they couldn't wait to go to church all their life they all didn't do good all the time but they worked on it and church was a happy place it was a place you could go and there was lots of love and the spirit of the lord and was there and you get your sins and your personality changed whatever you need some people do need a personality change and if their sins are gone that'll help them a whole lot but i'm so glad i'm here i've enjoyed each one of you that i've got to touch base with and i'm so glad that i know the healer the savior i'm not ashamed of this when i go out there i i don't feel like i'm living one bit beneath the millionaires i'm fine if i don't have nothing but jesus i'm still fine and i'm glad i'm living for him and it's been so nice the fellowship has been wonderful with brother and sister urshan and their boys i shouldn't call them boys but i am getting older so they're wonderful young men and i i can see there's so many excited faces here and that's that just and send no more i don't know why i'm hanging up on this but i mentioned earlier today that i went to 26 schools in the 10th grade they put me in college english classes you could never tell by listening to me speak and south bend school i went to was well this is where notre dame is so i'm the only non-catholic in my english grade and we had a professor named miss degroote who was born in paris france she taught diction and enunciation with a thick french accent which was a trip all by itself you didn't need lsd to go to my classes it was a trip one day mr groot said tomorrow i would like for you to bring a a sentence that you have diagrammed and i'll go the board and diagram your sentence or and you can correct your own paper or you can go to the board and diagram your sentence and i'll correct your paper i'm a nerd and i know i'm not a geek because geeks make more money than and nerds know i'm a nerd because i like things normal people aren't supposed to like i liked diagramming sentences i like conjugation you can't pick up any chicks with a line like that okay that no so i thought to myself what sentence would i make up could i get you to bring up on the screen matthew 28 19 if you would both of war i lapse into my native tongue every now and then and i thought since i'm the only non-catholic i'm going to put up matthew 28 19 so i diagrammed it said in alphabetical order so adams went first and he decided he wanted to go to the board and miss degroote diagram his sentence or correct his paper rather when it came my turn i said mr groot i would prefer that you go to the board and diagram this so she went to the board and i got down baptizing them in the name she said now we know that we're supposed to baptize people and whatever name this is but we don't know what the name is yet and i said of the father and she wrote of father the she said now we have a prepositional phrase modifying the word name we don't know what the name is but we know whoever has this name they have father she said father is just the title it's the description of who has this name i said and and she put the little slash there for that and put that in there and i said of the sun and she put of sun she said now we know that whoever has this name is not only a son but they're a father but we still don't know what the name is and i said and and she put the and in there i said of the holy ghost yes she but of holy ghost the she said here we have three prepositional phrases modifying the word name well we don't know what the name is because father son and holy ghost are just titles they're not names don't you love it when they do your homework for you she said martin what's the name i stood up and i said jesus is the name mr groot turned around and went i guess i need to be baptized in jesus name don't die till you get baptized in jesus name that's the way mary mother jesus got baptized that's the way the new testament church baptized that's how the apostles the disciples baptized in the new testament church was in the name of jesus lord jesus lord jesus christ okay there was no charge for that i just had to get that off my chest going back to my words take with you words jesus said it like this in luke 11 9 ask and it shall be given you when the book says shall you could take that to the bank it's going to happen just like you don't have to beg for the holy ghost he said you shall receive the gift of the holy ghost old saints used to sing a song jesus on the main line tell him what you want if you need a million dollars well we never sing that verse but if you need a healing if you need deliverance if you need a holy ghost tell it what you want i uh i got four sons and a daughter i got a 20 year old granddaughter i think she's killed about 19 deer whoever marries her got to step the game up a little bit but i have three sons that would rather hunt than fish i have one that would rather fish than hunt when i resigned church i gave away all my musical instruments i gave away all my books i gave away all my hunting and fishing stuff why would i give 22 long guns and six handguns to the the boy that would like to would rather fish than hunt and why would i give the fishing boat and the fishing gear to the hunters you want them to want what you give them god could have crammed every gift in the world down your throat when you got the holy ghost but he wants you to earnestly desire and covet the best guess why would i give 7 500 books i got two sons that love to read and i got two sons i'm glad they can read why would i give thousands of books to some guys you don't give a big quack about reading see what i'm saying god wants you to want what he has ask and you shall receive i've got a little disclaimer here if the way you're praying now is effective and it's working don't change but if you're praying more now i'm getting less accomplished then just hear me out you want people to sit on you when you preach preach on prayer or preach on holiness so tonight i'm going to preach on prayer but i'm not going to preach on prayer i'm a compromiser i'm just going to tell you stories about what i've seen what i've heard what the lord's allowed me to live through i was raised by a mom and dad who believed god could do anything let me just tell you what's a cattle prod in me right about now my sister nyla my my baby sister i had i'm the only boy the eldest i had four younger sisters i married a girl who had no brothers all she had four sisters i've been afloat on the estrogen ocean all my life raised in a girl's dormitory it's a wonder i didn't turn out precious and everything i i have lots of problems this is not one of them okay that's what i'm talking about [Applause] but my sister nyla brought me a suitcase big suitcase full of letters that my mom wrote to her mom her mom wrote back to her and whatever it takes me a long time to tell a story because i go off on rabbit tails trails motor tails too my mama was worse than i am and grandma held the trophy but when you take those letters and you're reading history it's a wealth of information all the little graphic details so i thought i don't want to be a hoarder and just keep this for myself i want to scan all these letters and you know share them with my children so they can see where they come from because my mom and dad were people of faith so i just picked the first letter up one i'm going to scan i just picked the first one out and said my precious mama i greet you the name of jesus that's my mama talking to her mama she said i just brought baby nyla home from the hospital today they lived in little daddy had just resigned columbus indiana they lived in a little town called hope half a dozen or so miles away she said they only let me stay one night in the hospital because we didn't have insurance and she said so today we walked the mile home from the hospital can you imagine walking home carrying a day old baby this is october in indiana it gets down in the 40s it gets cool she said when we walked in the house and i should say that this house had no electricity had no running water she said when we walked in the house we noticed that it was cool so carl my daddy went down to the fuel oil company to buy a load of fuel oil and when he came home he had a sad countenance and i said honey what's the problem what's the matter this is back in the day when my father probably made about 20 a week he said well when i got done paying for the fuel oil i only had one dollar left it's going to be two weeks before i preached my next revival and then i gotta preach a week before they pay me that means i've got one dollar to feed a family of seven for three weeks and my mother says in the letter honey that's such an easy thing for god and then the color of the ink changes and she says brother and sister lester mcfarland stopped by on the way home from general conference and sister mcfarland didn't know that i had a baby and she gave me ten dollars to buy baby nyla something nice and carl and brother mcfarland talked and we all prayed together and they left and when brother mcfarlane left she said carl pulled out a 50 bill and said brother mcfarlane said god told him to give that to me so there's the sixty dollars that they needed for the three weeks so when you have a mama who raises you saying that's such an easy thing for god do you believe my god can do anything i'd like to inspire somebody's confidence that sure god can my little six-year-old boy andrew said daddy bobby's bicycle doesn't have any brakes can you fix it let me tell you jack you got four sons you can fix a bicycle i said sure you have to bring it to the back porch and i got my toolbox and i sit down on the back porch and flipped the bike over back over and i saw they just needed to be adjusted and i adjusted his brakes i said okay bobby try that he got oh thank you mr balestero and my little pint-sized son stuck his chest i said see i told you my daddy can fix anything how come we can't have that same confidence about our god my god can do anything there's nothing impossible with him there's been a spirit of belief and hope and faith in this service tonight scripture came to mind while we all were praying one for another that the lord was present to heal and i would like to preach to you on this subject tonight just ask i i really hated that i was in your prayer service tonight because i didn't want anyone to think i'm picking on them because i i chose not to hear how you pray if you pray at all thank you but there's one church i went to every year for 15 years five services a week for a minimum of two weeks every year and a man about my age would walk back and forth in front of the pulpit and prayer service and this is what he would say your will and way god your will and way you're willing away god you're willing way and for 15 years i never heard him say anything else besides your will and way god you're willing away it's like he's saying whatever you want to do god whatever you want to do and i know we're supposed to pray not my will but time be done but surely in 15 years you can come up with one more line i would leave there and the next month i would find myself in a state west of here and a man would kneel in the front row in a pre-service prayer about my age there's something wrong with my age group i did and he would pound the seat he would say somehow someway god somehow someway well the first time i heard the man pray i felt so sorry for him i wanted to give him a hundred dollars or something but for eight years three weeks out of the year five services a week he never changed from somehow some way i still don't know what the problem was none of my business and then i would go to the church south of their ways about 90 men walking back and forth in a choo-choo line or something praying before church and one man just sat there quiet never said a word for 20 minutes or never opened his mouth i walk by him it's dark the women are praying in the sea just the men up there in this area here i walked by him and out of nowhere he went god decalcified my whole spinal column right like that the book said take with you words if it was written in our vernacular today it'd say spit it out say what you mean i grew up in a generation where we prayed move lord save the lord heal the lord very generic prayer my father had a he had strange evangelists that wasn't nice was it that was it his evangelist he had was a little different than the ordinary he had this one named brother verbal bean i'm a teenager sitting on the front row the first night brother beans said don't invite any guests until i tell you he said if mama's not healthy the baby don't stand a chance so we're going to get our prayer right we're going to get our worship right we're going to get our spirit right we're going to repent to god we're going to repent to each other don't invite anybody till i tell you the revival has started so for three weeks six nights a week we took monday off and we almost didn't because we was afraid to give the devil a you know advantage he prayed us under the altar one or two nights we crawled on our hands and knees to the altar we repented to god we repented to each other people ran they shouted our song leader i called him 4-4 timing because when he led song service he did it like this direct an angel trafficker or whatever he was doing and folks were shouting i mean they was doing the stomp the watusi the twist again like we did last summer baby i don't know what all they was doing but he stopped him such as such a bar such as such a measure observed that eighth rest note my father tapped him on the shoulder said observe that third row sit there and don't move till i tell you i'm going old school on you tonight okay some people get offended nowadays you know if you said yeah so brother bean gets up one night and he says after three weeks he said well i got good news tomorrow night's going to be the first night of the revival he stayed there so long we rented an apartment i'm 18 i think so he said brother marty could you get your father's chalkboard set it up right here for me he said tell you what i'm going to do you're going to give me the names of whoever you want to see get the holy ghost of this revival i'm going to write their names on the blackboard till we fill it up we're going to pray for these folks they're going to get the holy ghost and when they get the holy ghost they're going to get come up on the platform get the eraser and they're going to raise their name off and when they've raised all their names off we're going to fill it up again and i looked at my dad like he don't know south bend we just after three or four people get the holy ghost around here i mean don't be bringing those southern revival up in him we yankees we don't do revival like that that's texas style that's louisiana style mississippi or something that ain't indiana good saints when they hear preachers say something that they're not sure about they look right here to see his reaction if he ain't saying amen then you don't say amen okay that's how that works [Applause] you can shake your head it's okay my daddy could have been a poker player because i couldn't read his face he said okay give me some names and the first name out of the hat was paul mitten he turned around he wrote paul he said how do you spell mittens someone said m-i-n-t-o-n he wrote that down he said has paul ever been to church so yeah was the last time he's in church oh about a year a year and a half maybe it's all right and he filled up this column in this column in this column and it's called until the board was full he said now i'm not going to pray for the whole board tonight we're just going to pray for one person we're going to pray for paul mitten and the way we're going to do this is you're going to pray the exact words that i tell you to pray don't change one word he said we're going to pray a specific prayer because god doesn't answer general prayers and i looked over at my father like where'd you get this guy oh surely god hears prayers because if we're praying move god heal god save god surely he's going to do that he must he's moving somewhere healing somewhere and saving somewhere but what we meant right here is what we meant so he said prayer number one we're going to pray four prayers prayer number one god bring paul mitten to church tomorrow night so paul had 42 kin folks in the house and he's all pumped up about that he wouldn't have you know devil on wheels he's just a good old boy that needed to get in church you all know folks like that yourself so they got all excited oh god bring paul meeting to church tomorrow night man we prayed for at least a minute you know you hate to do it we go overboard prayer number two and before he got in prayer number two he said god don't care to you care he said think of all the problems that you've had and god didn't do anything until you got involved and you started praying you started asking about it then god stepped on the scene when you got involved god got involved okay i cut him a little slack on that one he said prayer number two god let paul mitten get under conviction tomorrow night well i've seen paul in church time or two but i'd never seen him under conviction so here i am the pastor's son zero faith on the front row god that paul mitten get under conviction tomorrow night if he comes so so help me i apologize to god and everybody else but that's where i was okay because we never seen this kind of revival well the folks got pumped prayer number three god bring paul mitten to the altar tomorrow night well by now prayers get a little bit more fervent and prayer was prayer number four was god filled palmitting with the holy ghost tomorrow night well his family was out there shouting and everything he said well that's all for tonight come back tomorrow night and watch palmetto and get the holy ghost my dad didn't allow for laws of averages on prophecies you missed it you're a false prophet hit the road jack and don't you come in most of the carnal people on the platform here tonight i knew i was going to have to drive him to chicago o'hare airport that's going to be a long quiet ride i'll just tell you that right now my dad just shut him down you stand up and prophesize something you don't have but you done jack he said the dairy queen was the closest thing to us that gets something he said y'all go home go the dairy queen whatever but help yourself good night come back tomorrow night watch paul mint get the holy ghost so i'm standing down to dairy queen sure hope paul mitten comes to church tomorrow night if he don't i sure would hate to be in big boy's shoes because i'm they're just going to have to do the chauffeur into chicago we get to church the next night and i'm on the front row i'm standing beside big al and we're singing some old dirge like won't we have a time trying to get over yonder and it wasn't really going anywhere and then they kind of picked it up just a little bit at least we could clap our hands to it and i hear big al say is he here i don't know why he asked me he had a neck nope i looked up at brother bean i looked at my dad i'm thinking of myself hate to be in your shoes big long quiet night and then we got to do a little something something else and i hear is he here yet i should have got a job with fox news or something and when folk saw paul bitten in the house faith moved up out of the basement and got on the main floor because if god can answer one prayer he can do two if he can do two there ain't no stopping the same guy that healed you of a cold can heal you your cancer when the saints saw paul in the house man there's some kind of happy they have to shout and then i heard what you doing now tears were coming down paul mitten's cheek oh four four time and was back in business again and when brother bean saw paul mitten cry he walked to the pulpit and to the credit of 4 4 timing he didn't wait for brother bean to be introduced brother bean didn't bring a bible nothing he just backed out as they say in some parts in my neighborhood he backed out the way let me tell you thank you for everything you do to help and assist in these services and any services but you don't own any position because it's not about you or me it's all about him and when the holy ghost moves we get out of the way and we let god take over brother bean probably talked 20 seconds [Applause] and paul mitten came out of the seat he'd come down to the altar lord you should have heard all the noise that went up men swarmed paul mitten like a pack of dogs swarming a three-legged cat the ladies couldn't see paul because the men just was crowded around him we had hardwood floors betw between the pews there carpet in the house those high heels sounded like machine guns in less than five minutes a guttural roar went up from the men why paul mitten was talking in tongues and when he got done he come up on the platform and he got the eraser and he raised his name off and i'm thinking lord that's so easy we're going to clean this whole board up i bought into it because i saw it unfold in front of my eyes and once you see god do one thing you can believe you for two things or three things why not why not revival in durham why not a hundred souls why not 200 souls why not why not here anybody believe god do they have ice cream trucks in your town i believe the technicians tweak the speakers on ice cream trucks so the six-year-old can hear it 1.3 miles away and that little rascal may be in the backyard into mischief but when he hears the sound of that ice cream truck it won't be long before the screen door slams i need five dollars for ice cream i need me and bobby want some ice cream daddy ain't deaf he heard the ice cream truck anytime you got that he said hey kids ice cream anybody want ice cream you get your little red crayola and you circle the calendar date because that's a good day sometimes the father knows your need before you ask he's just waiting for you to ask as a kid you don't have a problem telling daddy what you want and why you want it how come you got a problem telling god that i i'm coming home from bible school it's about may 1st to may or so i'm in the fair state of nebraska it's uh about supper time driving to 55 ford and i look in my rearview mirror and i see one of nebraska's finest advertising i pull over and stop 50 feet from a speed limit sign i looked at my speedometer and i'm doing 65 and that's what the sign said 65 and then it said 60 in the sign underneath it daytime and nighttime but it's several hours before dark so i wasn't worried about the nighttime speed the trooper opened his door and he pointed to 357 with a hammer pulled back on it at my head and i felt it would be appropriate to keep my hands at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel i just felt that in the holy ghost you know what i mean he's talking on the radio and he finally comes up with a hammer still pulled back pointing it in my head and he looks at me he walks slowly all the way around the car he comes back around the driver's side against asks for my driver's license the registration i hand it to him he looks at it lets the hammer down sticks his gun in the holster he said there's been an escape from the nebraska state penitentiary and your car matches the description of the getaway car thank you devil he said the law he said but i am going to have to give you a ticket for speeding i said how fast was i going sir he said 65. i said at the risk of sounding argumentative that's what the sign says right there oh he said that's daytime speed yes sir he said the speed limit changes at six o'clock to 60 miles an hour and now it says um 602 he said i said again i'm not trying to be argumentative but on the 60 speed limit sign it doesn't say anything about 6 pm he said ignorance of the law is no excuse follow me to hall county courthouse so i he had my driver's license so i'm following him to hall county courthouse and i'm on the docket at eight o'clock for night court i left california with 25 dollars and the gas card my dad had sent me to come home i bought me some health food on the way i had 15 left my health food was rc coca colas moon pies and free toes that's what i was i see you got some healthy people in the house too i was found guilty of driving 65 into 60 and fined 25 dollars i had 15. i said your honor i've only got 15 dollars would be okay if i make a phone call to my father and have him wire me some money western unions no absolutely but western union closed at eight o'clock and the high sheriff william um will provide you lodging for the evening and i looked at the high sheriff with the big iron on his head and he took me downstairs to the jail department where they took my shoelaces in my belt because they knew i was going to commit suicide they gave me a rolled up mattress or smaller some of my mama's waffles it took me into a cell block where there's ax murderers and wife beaters and everything else i found an open cell and i looked at all the guys like i dare you to come over here don't even think about it i wasn't in my cell too long before i heard bowstero sir it's time for your one phone call so yes sir so he made me walk in front of him to this little room you open the room and the only thing in there is a small skinny table with a phone on it that doesn't even have a dialer on it i know my phone call was monitored because he stood behind me like this the whole time i picked up the phone and the voice said this is the operator how i may assist you and i said yes i would like to make a person-to-person click called the reverend carl balostero he's probably at church right now the number there is and i gave her the number and she said all right and whom may i say is calling and i gave her my name and she said martin where are you calling from and i said i looked for the number and all it said was hall county jail and when i said hall county jail she cackled and when she cackled at me i became an instant member of the he-man woman haters club i didn't stay a member very long but temporary membership when my dad answered the phone i said you're willing way to add you're willing away somehow someway that somehow someway [Applause] i knew what i was going to say and how i was going to say it before daddy ever picked up the phone daddy said i just got done preaching for so-and-so they give me fifty dollars it's going to cost eight dollars to wire you the money there'll be forty two dollars waiting on you in the morning i said thanks dad i'll see you tomorrow at nine o'clock the sheriff took me over to western union he handed me my driver's license and i told the manager my father reverend carl ballesteros sent me 42 last night i'd like to pick it up and i showed him my identification he shuffled some papers and said i'm sorry nothing came here last night i said check again he checked against it like i said no money came in from anybody for anybody last night i looked at the sheriff and i said thank you for a place to stay last night i do not wish to stay there again i looked at the manager and i said if my father said there's 42 dollars in this house for me there's 42 dollars here so you have two choices you can either find my 42 or i can come over this counter and help you find my 42 dollars [Applause] and the sheriff realized he's dealing with an idiot so he backed up and he put his hand on the big iron and in 10 seconds my 42 dollars was laying on the counter i don't know what kind of scam they had going on there but i'm just telling you if my god said there's 42 dollars there's 42. if god made you a promise why can't you claim it so at the ripe old age of 24 my wife 21 and expecting our second child we started a church in oklahoma city and i had this strange evangelist taken after my father a blind evangelist from south louisiana his name was brother joe duke i'm talking about the kind of man walking in the first service said oh my god there's a woman here with a red polka dotted dress on my god i see the armadillos rooting in your grave and you hear a scream and the first time visitor in a red polka dot address comes running to the altar oh she got the holy ghost that's the kind of man that was in the house okay now my wife and i are broker than the ten commandments we poor we're staying in the back of the church the the fellowship um our bedroom is a former pastor's office my evangelist is staying in the sun is go room the small fellowship area fellowship hall that was our living room so brother duke would eat breakfast about eight o'clock or so and then he would sit down in a rocking chair and for four hours just sit there and rock and talk there was no moaning no groaning just talking now lord about this thing over here i need you to fix this and do that and we're trying to you know tiptoeing through in and out of the room or whatever my poor wife she's making peanut brittle and selling it trying to keep the boat afloat we at best we got 50 a week for us to live on and the church payment was like 450 the auditorium would see 400 people and you got like 30. we practiced social distancing back then even so along about 11 30 brother duke says now god these folks i'm preaching for they're doing me the best they can they're giving me the best they got but they're poor they ain't got no money tonight lord i like to have some pork chops i'd like to have some pork chops myself but you can only just give so much blood he said and i like to have some cat head biscuits now for all you city folk cat head biscuits is a biscuit as big as a cat's head that's what i'm talking about lara been good he said so i'm going to need about 10 pounds of flour and why don't you give me a one pound can of crisco he said uh i'd like to have a quart of cane sorghum you know what that boy's gonna do with his biscuit don't you and he said i i once give me a pound of butter uh make that two pounds and don't give me no olio or margarine like you did last time he said i'd like some fried okra some fresh snack green beans some corn on the cob they got a couple of babies so maybe we could use some alcohol why don't you give me two gallons of milk i said well that ought to take care of that he gave god a shopping list and just went on like he has nothing i'm looking at her bug eye like what in the world are we going to do about 2 30 a knock came on the back door of the church building where the kitchen was and before i could get there i heard the car take off i opened the door there's 16 sacks of groceries on the back porch of the church there's pork chops there was 10 pounds of flour a one pound can of crisco one quart of cane sorghum there was a our house was bugged or something there was two pounds of real butter fresh snap green beans fried some okra corn on the cob two gallons of milk and more besides now you think i'm going to sit around and think that it doesn't mean what it says when it says give us this day our daily bread i don't know what you need you may need financing for your house for a car you may need transportation you may need a job you may need a relationship book together put back together all you got to do is ask jesus on the main line tell him what you want can i get a witness from somebody my father pastored nine churches he started six of them we lived in a little two and a half dollar a week shack in yakima washington daddy started daddy mama started church in yakima it was a migrant workers cabin there's about two hundred or so used to be a former military base of some kind no water no electricity the bathrooms was like 200 feet away a shower house seven of us sleeping in that one room shack wooden cook stove no screens i slept on the top bunk two sisters on the bottom bunk heads facing different directions two babies toddler sisters on palace my mom and dad slept on a uh double bed the church is still going there today though thank you jesus but daddy gets a letter from a pastor in southern california said brother ballister i'm going to the mission field i want you to come and take the church the church wants you to come and be their next pastor so daddy resigned there we drove down in a little 49 pontiac coupe all seven of us we didn't have any furniture we just had some bedding and i said betty some blankets some plates a pot or two and about over 25 pounds i think of pinto beans the kind that talk behind your back and we we get to southern california daddy pulls up at the preacher's house lord i apologize whatever and when daddy stood there at the door the man opened the door the man went and even at 14 i knew that wasn't a good sign he said little brother ballister i'm so sorry i've changed my mind i'm not going and so daddy gets back to the car and i'm sitting in the front seat between mom and dad dad said well connie i got a friend named brother lehman reynolds and that's where i met you sister luke got a friend named brother lehman reynolds the kids can go to school that's a good church for you to go to and i'll try to evangelize again so we go to national city and they rent a house it was a formerly a duplex for 80 dollars and get all the utilities turned on for eighty five dollars and daddy doesn't even have one quarter left he is totally broke the next morning i heard a scream now you got to understand we don't have a couch we don't have a table we we ain't got nothing i went down to the grocery store safeway and i got four wooden orange crates i took a door off a utility room and made a table where at least we could sit and have something to eat off of but we slept on pallets on the floor we didn't know that the former renters had 16 dogs in that house my mother screamed because the torsos of my little sisters was covered with mosquitoes not mosquitoes was covered with flea bites and fleas the fleas were so thick we had electrolux the tube type vacuum cleaner mother had to vacuum the fleas off of their little bodies i went into the garage and i vacuumed the fleas off of myself that's how thick they were none of his five children had the holy ghost mama said carl we don't even have 25 cents for flea powder but the bible said if we'd pay our tithes that god would rebuke the devourer for our sake she said i'm not sure he meant fleas when he said devour but these things has eaten us up she said gather round children we're going to pray these fleas out of here none of those kids had the holy ghost my daddy was one of these quiet turned gentlemen he wasn't loud or boisterous my mother was the kind of woman that entered the room mouth first you could hear her coming she's one of those holy ghost women that went from zero to 100 miles an hour 2.3 seconds just zoom she's talking in tongues you you go girl mom was crying and praying i know the bible said watch and pray but i scratch and pray oh jesus oh god jesus i don't know how long we prayed couldn't have been much more than 10 minutes all i know is from the time we got up to 13 months later when we moved out no flea was ever seen again in that house that's the kind of stuff my mama put on me my daddy put on me i don't care how big your problem is god can he said if you've got faith as a grain of mustard seed put your thumb and your finger together show me how big you think a grain of mustard seed is he didn't say if you got faith as long as a cadillac see you should be able to say that man get out the way i fly into seattle three or four times a year the twisted part of my mind makes me look out the window on the left side make sure mount rainier is still there i don't know if one of the saints had a bad day they said hey you gone i know it's not talking about literally moving mountains but there's mountains in your life you can speak to in the holy ghost and god can move that mountain out of the way for you amen lord i got much more stories i want to quit with this last one i want you to go ahead and stand give yours i want to give you some hope within the last month or so my sister nyla and i drove to anaheim anaheim is the only church my father started that's still not going on today out of the six that he started but they rented a house three stories high had one room that we put up 40 folding chairs i'm 8 years old put up 40 folding chairs in it had a a real altar a pulpit a upright piano daddy's mama was getting ready to start church in the house and daddy said to mama uh honey i my mother's 30 years old she said i i got one revival i got to go finish and i'll be back and when i get back we'll we'll start the church so daddy goes i to this day don't know where he went or where the revival was i do know that in a few days mother brought some bedding blankets and pillows down to the main floor and she made a pallet on the floor in the hallway right outside the bathroom i'm clueless it doesn't make any alarms go off of my head then one day my mother said in a weak voice honey would you stay home from school today and watch your little sisters for mama well when you ask an eight-year-old kid if they want to stay home from school that's not rocket science right there yo oh yes ma'am yeah so i stay home now i had sisters okay and i can only tolerate so much of the imaginary tea party stuff and the little dolly stuff my escape from reality was to read didn't help me much but it was an escape so i stayed must have stayed home maybe from school 10 days or so and one night about 5 o'clock i was knocking on the back door and i opened her i can cook i mean i could pour milk on post-toasties and shredded wheat i could make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches we good and my mother wasn't eating anything and she was just drinking very little and her voice got weaker and weaker and weaker and when she went to the restroom she couldn't crawl or stand up or walk she would pull herself with her forearms and scoot on her tummy and that didn't seem right but again i'm clueless i'm eight knocking the back door about five o'clock and i went there and the nurse was standing there she said are you martin i said yes ma'am she said well i'm the school nurse we've been missing you at school i said yes ma'am she says have you been sick i said no ma'am then why have you been why haven't you been to school i said i've been taking care of my mama she's sick she said well where's your daddy i said i don't know she said you don't know where your daddy is they can't ask that question today i said no ma'am he's an evangelist he's preaching revival but i don't know where he is so when's your daddy coming home i said i don't know she said do you have any family or friends in the area i said no ma'am we don't know anybody here she said can i see your mama i said yes ma'am and i take her to where my mother was she introduced herself and she knelt on the floor she asked my mother some questions she took all of her vitals asked her some more questions put the stethoscope around her neck and with tears coming down her eyes the nurse took my mother's hand and hers and patted it she said mrs balostero i hate to be the one that tells you this but you have polio now when you're 30 years old you don't know anybody in town your husband's gone your family lives 1100 miles away you don't even have a phone in the house the death sentence of that generation was polio and to hear that you have it and you got three small babies i saw tears come to my mother's eyes the nurse stood up and she patted me on the head and i walked into the door she said now when your daddy comes back and you can you come back to school here yes ma'am i go back in the front room and i sit there on the couch and i pick up my book and i go back to reading it was about two hours later close maybe to seven it's still a little bit light and i hear marty party and i jump up and i run to my mother yes ma'am she said put your hands on mama's head and pray for mama i start crying immediately i said mom i can't pray for you i don't have the holy ghost or nothing she said you don't have to have the holy ghost to pray for me just say in jesus name i'm not trying to be funny here i didn't know if you said jesus name first or you said it last so i said i'm sobbing i said in jesus name heal my mommy right now in jesus name my mother's laying flat on her back not even enough strength to raise a hand up she finally got one hand up she's talking softly in tongues and she got a hand brought up like this and got another one up like that and she tried to get that one up and then she got the other one up and then she tried to roll over and push herself up in a city position i'm trying to catch her she don't fall she's swooning around and got her hands back up in the air she's talking to tongues her voice is still weak and then she turned around tried to get on her knees and she's wobbling and i'm trying to catch her let her make sure she doesn't fall backwards and she finally got one one knee up and then she got the other one up and she wobbled and she finally got all the way up on her feet her hands were in the air then her voice got loud my mother shouted all over that room talking in tongues we buried my mother at the age of 89 without one trace of polio in her body i don't care if you're eight years old god can hear your prayer even if you don't have the holy ghost and you're sincere god can hear your prayer i don't know what you need tonight i don't know what burdens and problems that you have but all you got to do is ask we got a god who can come through for you tonight you need healing in jesus thank you jesus thank you jesus god can't do anything i can remember standing in honduras looking at a an impossible set of circumstances that i had entered into i didn't speak spanish well enough to interpret properly and my interpreter was worse at english than i was in spanish we had a couple little folks that were just coming and we were just a pitiful little ragtag group and i remember praying god i need you to help me how do you overcome a language barrier how do you overcome cultural barriers and how do you build a church with this and we struggled through a couple weeks of service and one day a man walked into the back of the little pavilion where we held service and he looked at me and he said my name is hermano parstor gutierrez i loved how he rolled his rs he said i came from tegucigalpa because god told me you needed help that man's there today in his 70s helping build the church in roatan honduras i'm here to tell you you got to bring words to god he knows what you have need of but if you ask him for bread he won't give you a stone if you ask him for fish he won't give you a serpent if you being evil know how to give good gifts how much more will your heavenly father give gifts to those who ask him i want to ask in faith believing praise god thank you brother balestrell for preaching to us tonight thank you for [Applause] for the testimonies and the word of god [Applause] the ministry of the joel buxton last week and for the ballisterol this week i feel like god's getting us ready for some amazing things i feel like god is preparing and
