Jonathan Majors on Playing Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man, Working with Jay Z & Going to Cowboy Camp

our next guest recently became part of the marvel cinematic universe as future super villain kang but while he marinates in evil he stars alongside idris elba and regina king in the new western the harder they fall it's in select theaters october 22nd and on netflix november 3rd please welcome jonathan magers [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] how you doing boy you had some year haven't you really i mean you got your first emmy nomination for lovecraft country you got you are a marvel super are you a villain are you super villain because they're super villains super villain yeah yeah is it more fun to be a super villain than a superhero hell yeah yeah i think the superheroes get to stick around longer but the super villains make more of an impression agree yeah yeah what can you tell us anything you just came back from london you're shooting ant-man right i'm there now yeah we came in for uh premiere for the holiday fall and uh yeah i'm still in london no no we're not in london no no we're not in london i'm still here in los angeles you're in london i'm in that lake we're in l.a i felt your hand before it was very lifelike i don't so um uh you were shooting ant-man and uh you're playing kang the conqueror you're as nervous as i am well kane the conqueror go ahead you know i don't know what you can say you can't say that yeah i can say that did you know i'm playing craven the hunter in uh spider-man yeah um in loki you were what was it he who remains he who remains there yes and now you've blossomed shall we say into kang which is kind of like a thanos caliber villain yeah true okay interesting and it seems like no offense to ant-man but kang if kang is a thanos yeah it's like squash goodbye keep going right yeah yeah yeah yeah ant-man's dead we'll see yeah you've read the whole script you know i read the script this is uh [Laughter] how serio did somebody sit down with you and go listen you can't you're gonna have a lot of conversations you can't talk about this stuff you have to be super careful it's worse than that because there's no conversation oh there's no conversation no one says anything to you you just go don't say don't say really ever ever i've called my publicist so many times i'd be like i think i said oh can you back that up uh-huh yeah it's okay it's okay it's okay okay what about this now this is one of those situations where you're kind of being spied on this was a tweet that someone posted i don't know if you've seen this uh it's safe to say jonathan major's enjoying being kang and somebody i think at a restaurant said not me serving jonathan majors from loki and work tonight he has a picture of himself as kang the conqueror on his lock screen is that true did that really happen i do have a you do right now oh can i hold it up oh oh wait a minute oh yeah that's kang all right is that bad but it's it's for inspiration it's the it's to keep it keep it going and this is a comic from the comic yeah right okay are you dressed like that is kang no i think we should go back to this woman yeah oh yeah back to the woman yeah who uh her name is her name lainey and where is lanie back and maybe question some people bust a couple of heads you're a super villain now you can't let this kind of thing i mean where's marvel at that's what they look after me oh mark find her find her i'm sure they are on top of this wow you got this uh western coming out this looks like uh well first of all your character is based on a real character which is not almost never the case for a western true not love deadwood dick born in tennessee ex-slave or enslaved person um outlaw cowboy badass in the film uh i go out to seek revenge on this guy in his gang because when i was a boy that killed my parents if you read his autobiography there's all these uh episodes about how excellent he was as a cowboy uh he could ride better than everybody shoot better than everybody so when i read the script i went okay this is a badass story yeah and did you then go and learn to ride and shoot and do all that stuff so i'm from texas this is my texas stance it's like the city all right when you say you're from texas yeah yeah yeah i got it yeah um no i'm from texas my family we uh we have a farm it's not just it's not this extravagant type of farm we just had a farm it's just what people do a working farm or working a farm and we have horses on it i got to hang around the horses um and so i was familiar with pork you're very comfortable yeah that kind of stuff but i've had a lot of cowboy camps uh my first film i ever did had a cowboy camp um these are when they prepare you to be a cowboy right right yeah yeah so this one on holiday fall it was a cowboy camp outlaw camp and so we did a lot of gun twirling and a lot of horse riding so i was about i'd say a seven on riding the horse uh-huh i say nat love was about a 12. oh okay yeah yeah yeah yeah uh jay-z is one of the producers on on this film did he was he involved like was he there on the set with you no i mean we shot this at the height of uh the pandemic oh um but i tell you what what jay-z mr carter did do is we were at a party we were all hanging out and he was he was hosting a party and he did give me um the most emboldening thing you know like this cast is crazy you know idris elba regina king jazzy beast lake stanfield dion cole rj kyle daniel detweiler that's crazy and then me it's like you know okay you know i can ride a horse i can offer you that yeah i mean well no uh jay-z was very we were just grooving and he i hugged him i thank him for the roar i said thank you for the opportunity he said it's old baby going to kill it we're going to kill this thing you know what i mean and uh in the middle of the pandemic i lived in santa fe and stayed in santa fe when the film went down and i just thought about that you know jay-z says you're going to kill it we're going to make a classic you know you kind of believe in that and uh well that's exciting i mean you gotta you got a lot ahead of you i mean you gotta you're gonna kill that movie well you killed the movie now you gotta kill some avengers on top of it i'm a killer you're a killer we got to find laney what's her name and you gotta yeah yeah well finally you're the fine the final person on your list is laney as the chicken and
