[Applause] next guest is one of the youngest coaches to ever win a Super Bowl and is currently an analyst on ESPN's Monday night football here he is ladies gentlemen John Bruton John come on [Music] [Applause] [Music] good to have you here how you doing good good good to see you again watch watch part of that NFL Draft it's a big deal now the coverage of the draft win and why when did it become a big deal why is it a big deal well the draft every year gives you chance to get better and let's be honest those top 10 picks those are all instant millionaires so there's a lot at stake can the top 10 change your team you get the right guy yeah you know now you can make a mistake to set yourself back a long period of time but you got to do your homework and you got to got to be lucky a little bit something how many kids coming out of college or other circumstances are eligible for the draft well you have to have a little bit of background in college football but they're 53 Junior's came out this year I believe there was 53 which is unheard of years ago there were no juniors so this draft was a little bit deeper because of the underclassmen it came out now the guy that I was fascinated by this guy story and I've known about it for a couple years a place for Ball State played for Ball State 33 years old went to the Marines made some sacrifices on behalf of his family before he went into a college program still thinks he can get it done at 33 and I saw where he was in fact not drafted is that correct but he received an invitation to go to a trans training camp he was a free agent and that's what happens after the draft if you're not drafted you get a phone call if you're good enough now this guy was from your alma mater day 33 years old right I didn't realize it took 13 years to get a degree in once the Indian oh yeah it's it's not a it's not an academic slam dunk my friend it's we're they're working we're cracking those books buddy and at 33 is it reasonable to think he's got a chance that they just don't got him over there for a good laugh well you never know in this world that we live in but that has to be a long shot I would think yeah and and what will he will he be on the taxi squad is that what will happen he'll have a rookie minicamp what they do is they bring in all the draft choices and then they're gonna bring in 25 to 30 other players in a tryout camp I got a feeling that's what this young man is there to do and if he does something great spectacular he'll get invited to training camp but I highly doubt it oh really well just go ahead and crush his dream right here God coach yeah good clean out my locker clean out your locker do you know anything about the guy is he a good player you know I tried to study the guys that were under 25 days the 33 year old guys oh man they weren't on my list this year now hey that's cold I want to sound like something left over from Phil now first of all I've seen some things indicate to me that you ought to be coaching again how come you're not coaching are you gonna coach again how come you're not what are you gonna coach again I miss coaching I think you would that's all I ever did last time I saw you we won the Super Bowl yep now I'm the head of the FFC a the fired Football Coaches Association back in Tampa but I'm having a great time I'm really enjoying ESPN the guys I'm working with Mike Tirico Ron Jaworski the thrill of Monday Night Football and I had a chance to work with a lot of the top players well uh great that was great I came upon this show is it the first time you've done this show first time yeah and it's a what's it called John Gruden's quarterback camp or something yeah and he would take the what I saw was an hour of you talking to four college quarterbacks who were expected to go pretty high in the draft and you were their coach and these kids had had a great deal of reverence for you a great deal of respect for you great deal of fear for you they were calling you sir they were calling you coach they've never mentioned before in their lives it was hilarious that they were so worried about making an impression on you well it's great because we really wanted to help these guys that was the goal let these guys know realistically what they're in for there have been a lot of quarterbacks come and go high draft choices that didn't pan out and I felt it was a responsibility to try to help these guys get ready now when we saw the interaction with you and say like Colt McCoy or Tim Tebow or who have you Sam Bradford and and it was that the way you coach with your players in the NFL was that the relationship that you used is that where your success comes from oh pretty much I tried to stimulate these guys to get some emotion from them sometimes good and bad yeah see if they like to play do they understand a game plan and try to sell certain things to them and I wanted to have a little bit of fun it was fun because you start riding these kids but I loved it I just couldn't get enough of that because you never see these kids in that circumstance when you going to see them in that circuit you're just not going to so I thought it was a great insight into you how you operate and into them as well we'll take a look at a couple of minutes of that when we come back your Jon Gruden everybody [Applause] all right let's show I hope people understand the idea of the show you're talking to in this one-hour show four of the top quarterbacks in the draft and we're going to show this a little montage of your interaction with these college kids who at this point we're looking forward to the draft take a look here's Jon Gruden you got that Southern drawl man you're hard guy to understand you got that Texas huddle you yodel no huh no I mean you got to speak clearly man you got to try to lose that accent so when you get in there and you say hey flip right double x-jet 36 counter naked waggle at 7x quarter heads up for 358 Canon check on one we all understand you you can't be an we'll handle him you know you know what I said let's tell you what I know is what I know you're out of the game he's out of the game he's got a toe he got the wind knocked out of him he got a bad glute that's when all the girls come out on the other team Spiller's out of the game the game working on the kids that is fun you got you got kids your own playing ball how many boys got three boys I've got a 16 year old a 13 year old in the ten year old that's my job now I'm the assistant offensive line coach at Carroll would day High School at Tampa Wow good gig what's it what's it like for your son's having dad on the coaching staff well I think they like it you know I try to not get too excited at the officials but I've become a little bit more low-key and I'd do everything I can to get an edge and help them win and what is it like for the other coaches to have you on the staff that's got to be intimidating for them yeah that's all good I think I understand my role and I just want to help my kids team win mm-hmm good for you if you if you were to go back to the NFL right now where would you go any which team if you had to go to Indianapolis Indiana well yeah coach Peyton Manning yeah and that'd be a heck of a start yeah I could have you come and hang out with me after the games down in Indianapolis I would love paying another honestly I will let me show you that town but seriously pick you're not going to get that gig all right let's take Indianapolis off the table let's let's take New Orleans off the table where do you want to go they're taking the New York Giants off a place week ago we ought to talk about you bring him back football to Los Angeles you'd be a heck metal make it on the team we doubt our aim in LA and I'd go coaching okay so but I don't want one of those one of those expansion deals I want to uproot I want to kill a bunch of fans in some community I want to ruin the city and pull a team out of there an established team and move them to LA that'd be a perfect role right there you go buddy we get it all right that's it we got to go good night everybody [Music]
