John Veasey, Philip and Brenda Colletti vs Skinny Joey Merlino I Philadelphia Crime Family

Joe really knows out he's in Florida yeah that's funny I'm back in Philly he ain't huh who's more scared now you're a rat you know you're a [Applause] rat not only kill one another they would begin to tear down the very structure in [Applause] Philadelphia on one side the forces of mob Kingpin John Stanford who had the blessing of the New York mob lined up against stanfa skinny Joy Merino stanfa onetime Soldier and now his rival police believe it was skinny Joey Marino who ordered the hit at the diner the target was Stanford's second in command Joe chalini although chalini survived he was crippled stanfa demanded Revenge he ordered the murder both of Merlino and of merlino's number two men who just happened to be Joe chini's brother Mike the two brothers in opposing mob factions were sworn enemies stanfa personally outlined the plan for killing the two men openly orchestrating a hit is a peculiar move for a mafia do on usually the boss lets an underling give the actual order just in case the FBI might be listening in but Stanford did it himself bad move the FBI was listening as Stanford and a soldier switching back and forth between English and Italian planned merlino's [Music] murder going [Music] over there [Music] true you know the FBI must warn any potential victim of a murder if it knows of a plot against his life and agents did alert skinny Joey Merino Merino ignored the warning meanwhile to carry out the contract against skinny Joey Merino stanfa chose a young Mafia wannabe named John visi John VY was a South Philly born and bred neighborhood tough guy and he wasn't very big but he was he was tough Bey quickly teamed up with another young wouldbe mafioso Philip klei by day klei was a legitimate plumber By Night a mob Hitman no one in his nearby New Jersey town of Glassboro suspected the double life a lot of people didn't know all of our neighbors loved us we were constantly working on the house having barbecues every kid in the neighborhood was at our house was very normal then it was the dark side now the interesting thing about FTI is not only FTI but his wife Brenda Brenda the former uh nude go- go dancer is involved in the plots to kill Marino and the Marino Associates it was very unusual women aren't supposed to be part of this they're not supposed to hear things or or if they do they don't get involved and they just play dumb but I felt honored I felt privileged I enjoyed it I had a burning desire to be part of it that thrill and that danger the kti home was used as a think tank for the hits they would come over I'd be cooking my macaronis and pouring the wine and we would just be sitting there eating and drinking and plotting these things the question was how to kill berlino and his number two man one of the schemes even included Brenda herself the plan was for Brenda armed with poison in an eye dropper to visit bino's favorite hangout I was like you know I thought about it I was going to get all dressed up really sharp you know try and look all young and sexy hahaa go down there and uh shoot some stuff cyanide into their drinks I had more balls than half the guys that was working for John Stanford but the cyanide plot was vetoed instead the hit team decided to build a bomb they called their bomb the egg lucky for Merino the egg was a dead the hit team placed it under merlino's car and nothing happened it's in a box under the car it won't go off the car pulls out it's dragging the box with the bomb underneath it so in August 1993 Philip ketti and John VC decided to use the time honored Mafia method plain old bullets as Kenny Joey Merino and his second in command walked out of their favorite hangout at Sixth and Katherine kti and visi opened fire Michael chalini died on the spot they wounded Joey Marino shot him in the butt and then they took off Marino survived the Hitmen ran for cover at K's mother's house then Brenda helped them destroy the rented getaway car so that it could not be traced we drove a few blocks away and they took the car it was a brand new tourist and they torched it Brenda reported the car [Music] stolen as far as the Hitmen were concerned their message had been delivered don't mess with John stanfa okay and the rumor is is that uh two gunmen that were that stanfa actually hired were the ones who did it I have no idea that no I have no idea who shabby till this day they say this one did it that one did it I don't know I have no idea I don't even want to talk about it okay so nobody got convicted of that is what you're saying no not that I I don't know I don't know not that I know okay uh but I mean during that time there was really like a mess that was happening what do you remember the date that that shooting happened was it September 17th when I got shot yeah no I got shot the summer August August 5th I think yeah August 5th okay right because during that time it was it was a mess uh Stanford and his son got shot while on the expressway uh his son ended up getting shot in the jaw uh I think another one of your friends uh got shot in on September of that year no I don't know I don't know what you're talk about there okay I got charged with the I got charged with with that shooting and I got to quit it make sure you put that on there absolutely absolutely well but at one point this guy named Philip klei he testified in court do you know who that is no I never if he walked in here right now I never seen him in my life okay so a guy named Philip kti who was allegedly hired by stampa he testified in court that he planted a remote control bomb under your car several times but it never went off I guess he didn't know what the he was doing I don't know I don't know him I his wife said she tried to kill me too okay she tried to put sign out in my drink she was soing ugly I wouldn't even talk to her I mean how does it feel when all these people are trying to kill you it's all right it's all what about my day I mean did it make you think that maybe you need to just move somewhere else like get out of this area I didn't do nothing wrong okay went to dinner out drinking went to sporting events if that's a crime then I'm then kill me why go to do Brenda colleti she was the wife of mob Hitman Phil colleti how many people did your husband kill he's killed two people you said there were a couple of times when you could have potentially killed some oh yeah well I've had conversations with other people about uh actually pulling the trigger would you have would I have could you have that's a hard question I might have I might have she did come close to murder once planning to kill a rival wise guy skinny Joey Marino by slipping cyanide in his drink her husband stopped her then but she did help him burn a car he'd used in a mob hit lied to the cops to back up his aliis and stashed his weapons all this while living in a quiet Philadelphia suburb where the neighbors knew them as an average couple raising their little boy Paulie on a normal day it was we'd be out mowing the lawn and barbecuing and playing with paully and the dog and it was so normal it was great and then there was other days where we'd have people over the house um bringing ma tens with silencers for Philip to fix and uh a at one point we had a bomb in the house a bomb we had a bomb in the house there really was it was two lives she describes herself as a country girl from Massachusetts but there was trouble for Brenda colleti right from the start she dropped out of high school and was arrested several times for carrying a gun she married young and ended up working in bars and clubs on the fringes of Philadelphia I couldn't make it on a minimum wage job and I started dancing and what kind of dancing are you talking about stripping that sort of thing right yeah um it's not something I'm proud of but at that time I did what I had to do to keep my family alive and going in 1989 she left her husband for Phil colleti they married a year later colleti was an unemployed plumber with a Mean Streak he'd once shot a man dead in a dispute over a parking space and and he'd grown up on the streets of South Philadelphia well you know most of the guys that are Wise Guys grew up and come out of this neighborhood George Anastasia covers the mob for the Philadelphia Inquirer and is a consultant for prime time on this story yeah I mean you know guy on the corner who's booking numbers I mean so he's booking numbers and he knows somebody who knows somebody and to you he's a guy on the corner and you know uh you grow up around it you don't think anything of it Phil kle began working as a soldier for the crime family of John stanfa at first it was a good life for a mafia wife it's a it's a power trip you know you can just walk in somewhere and and they seat you right away and they just wait on you hand and foot you you feel like king and queen and uh it was nice you know so there were some attractive things about being involved with the mob oh yeah a lot of people um fear you and they respect you and that's all P part of that power trip and it just keeps you going police this afternoon combed the shooting scene at 6th and Catherine for evidence in 1993 a bloody power struggle erupted between the stanfa clan and the Rival Merlino faction on August 5th Joey Merino and one of his soldiers were ambushed outside their Clubhouse in South Philly Merino was wounded the other man was killed Phil colleti was one of the two trigger men weren't you shocked weren't you distressed yeah I was shocked I was there was a lot of thoughts running through my head um at the time honestly one of the thoughts was yeah we got one you know it's we were in the middle of a war it was a war it was them or us Brenda klei became her husband's partner in crime you carried a gun all the time all the time and at night I we both had one under the mattress under his side and one under my side that's right and you were prepared to use it in a heartbeat she says she never actually did pull the trigger but admits helping plan some of the rub outs with Phil and others stand for Hitman plans that often had a way of going wrong wrong shells and a shotgun they walk up to a guy point the shotgun pull the trigger nothing happened uh they stole a car one time to do a hit and and they couldn't get the car started that morning so they couldn't use it there was another hit where they used the car at least in their own name you know one of the lawyers said Good Fellas this is dumb fellas either way they were not all fellas Brenda was no mobster Mall not a typical Mafia wife who stays in the background she was a player once she was summoned to a rare audience rare for a woman with the Godfather John stanfa I was honored I mean I'm a female and he's talking to me about doing something illegal I mean and just being around all that power was just was very rare was a thrill but it wasn't but you won't see that in the news you'll never see the positive stuff yeah like the mid90s between you know dealing with the feds coming after you and them trying to pin you for all this stuff and then on top of that you have 30 different hits out on you 30 different attempted murders I didn't even know nothing about them I didn't even know it I mean it all came out in court I don't know these people I I I don't know none of them the only one I don't even know her that theing the ugly girl what's her name ket's wife she said she try to go poison in my drink she tried to poison him in a bar she says he's never even seen her oh really that's what she said she was staying outside the federal building with a bullseye said I was going to kill her I don't even know the like that's crazy she said she was going to put sign out in my drink she was so ugly she didn't have the chance to talk to me if she was if she was pretty I would have drank it like these are there real life stories like they're it's crazy wow yeah and when I'm on the podcast and he's telling the stories you see my reactions like your reactions like I'm listening to them like this is crazy Go real I'm only 32 so I'm here like my dad of course heard the stories before your time you know what I mean it's before my time so I'm really staring at him like wow stories are crazy yeah listen these Rats been around look Judas yeah it's look what he did beginning of time look what he did I mean it's stressful I mean it's stressful so even in that whole time cuz obviously there was the one driveby that actually you got C I shot and you got injured yeah would you mind just kind of taking me through some of the the steps of how that occurred no I was just walking down the street me and Michael in a car came and we got shot that was it I don't know who did it I didn't see no we didn't say it I mean talking I a [ __ ] looking and they drove away I mean that's a like and then it came out in court testimony they said they did it I don't know I I have no idea there who who shot us yeah I mean that's a brutal thing like that's the probably the worst thing that could happen to someone is like you were there cuz Michael end up passing away from right there well he was dying I didn't know you know at the time he went he went in the ambulance and I went to the hospital and then I seen it on news but Michael was a good man tough tough man good father young young kid for no reason yeah and did you even know what was happening like you heard this the the shots and you you run right down Joe Marino's out he's in Florida yeah that's funny I'm back in Philly he ain't huh who's more scared now he's not going to get a movie deal all right number two is he's not allowed back in Philly they don't want him back because they've seen all the greed and things he did do you think that with the upcoming racket Heering trial now do you think that they would try to bring you back to testify I would never testify I don't like the government I didn't make friends with the government uh some of these guys become rats and then they go on these speak arrangements to tell people how to fight crime I enjoy people that commit crime so what are you doing
