Nikki scarfer was probably the most violent American mafia boss in the past half century Scarfo was about 5 six what he lacked in height he made up for ambitiousness there was no room for negotiation with Scarfo Scarfo would kill his friends there were probably 20 6 to 30 mob guys killed during that Bloody era of the Philadelphia mob he was feared by everybody they heard His Name a Scaro was either you're going to do what I say or you're going to pay the price and the ultimate [Music] price [Music] February 15th 1978 Atlantic City former New Jersey municipal judge Edwin hont and his wife enjoyed a drink at a crowded bar inside the Flamingo Motel at around 9900 p.m. hant caught sight of a man in a ski mask walking through the poorly lit bar a snowstorm had just passed through the area but hant suspect Ed The Mask had another purpose 6 years earlier he had betrayed one of the most feared members of the Philadelphia mob nicodemo Scarfo a Scarfo associate named Nick the blade virgilio was up on some kind of second deegree murder choice and Scarfo wanted to ensure that vilo got a light sentence hont was a mob associate himself and told Scarfo he could buy virgilio a lighter Cent sentence by paying off a fellow judge but hell font never came through and virgilia was hung out to dry when virgilia got sentenced he got slammed there was no deal and so either hellan didn't bribe the judge or couldn't bribe the judge and just took the money Scarfo wanted Revenge but knew virgilia would want the pleasure of taking hant out 6 years later virgilio got out of prison it was payback time Scarfo and virgilio knew hant was a regular at the Flamingo while Scarfo waited in the car virgilio went inside he walked up to hont placed an arm around his shoulders and fired four shots into his body 15 minutes later hant was dead Scarfo had even the score he like things done in cowboy style where everybody could see you know the louder the better course puts more fear in the people he was vitile he was unpredictable he wasn't a businessman you know he was a gangster in a worst sense of being a [Music] gangster nicodemo Dominic Scarfo was born in Brooklyn New York on March 8th 1929 his parents had immigrated from Italy in search of a better life but found hard times in America in October of that year the stock market crashed leaving families penniless and desperate over the years to come scarfo's mother and father knew it was time to leave town they hoped to survive the Great Depression by taking up residence with their relatives in Philadelphia when Nikki Scarfo and his family moved to Philadelphia in an early 193 30s there was the presence of organized crime and that the gangsters were somebody really that were emulated that whole culture enveloped him from a very young age and he grew up in that environment and he flourished in it he loved it the crime family in Philadelphia the Philly mob was a branch of the New York mafia and ran operations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey scarfo's uncles the piccolo Brothers were heavily involved these were guys that were treated like celebrities they were the the movie stars on the street in 1947 Scarfo graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School and was voted most talkative by his classmates afterward he tried his luck at amateur boxing but taller boxers had a major advantage over the 5'6 Scarfo hung up his gloves he knew he could make more money as a gangster [Music] the Philadelphia mob though was doing its own scuffling in 1959 the boss in Philadelphia wanted to take out one of his own men Angelo Bruno but Bruno had connections in the New York mafia and instead of approving the hit the mob ousted the boss and put Bruno in his place it was a new era for the Philly mob Bruno encouraged his soldiers to avoid unnecessary violence and keep a low profile it earned him the nickname The Gentle Dawn the precedent set by Angelo Bruno was one of negotiation patience strategy as a low-level member of Bruno's crew Nikki Scarfo was not interested in falling into line in 1962 Bruno's consiliary Joe rugnetta took an interest in Scarfo because they were both from the same part of Italy he even tried to arrange the marriage of of his daughter to the young Soldier most members of the family would have considered it an honor but not Scarfo Scarfo scoffed at the perspective and told rugnetta he would not marry his very ugly daughter and that created again according to lur rug netta's need to go to Bruno to say I want this guy whack lucky for Scaro his uncle Nikki Buck Piccolo was then a mafia Captain so Bruno refused to sanction the hit but family ties are only so strong on May 25th 1963 Scarfo got in trouble again while out to dinner at the Oregon Diner in South Philly when Scaro and his cohort sat down uh nobody was sitting there turned out there was a long Sherman came over and he said that's really my table I just got up to say hello to somebody a quarrel ensues when Scarfo walked out of prison in 1964 the mob was waiting there are members of the Bruno organization who basically say to Angelo Bruno this kid's a hotthead he's nothing but trouble we should Whack Him to get rid of him because it's going to be a headache but Bruno decided that more violence wouldn't help matters instead the boss gave Scarfo an assignment running rackets in Atlantic City it was a clear slap in the face Philly was where the action was Atlantic City was a tacky Resort Town way past its prime the few hotels still in operation were empty Americans had outgrown the city's sandy beaches and saltwater taffy Scarfo may have been banished but he kept his eye on the Philly mob and when he returned he was a force to be reckoned with Philadelphia 1964 over the past 10 years Nikki Scarfo had gone from a street Punk to an upand cominging member of the m mob but Scarfo was Reckless he insulted the mob's consiliary and defied the boss's orders even among his fellow Soldiers the 35-year-old had a reputation for being a hothead to keep him in check mafia boss Angelo Bruno banished him to Atlantic [Music] City in the 1960s the city on the Atlantic had seen better days the main strip of retail and entertainment had gone from Boardwalk to boarded up it was a ghetto bft of its Glory Days where the mob would go there and weekend and party and meet with unemployment at an all-time high even the city's Mobsters had a hard time making ends meet Nikki Scarfo did whatever he could to get by he's trying to do some bookmaking but there isn't a lot of action down there so he's not making a lot of money he's tendon bar he's got a interest in a book story and he's poor scarone lived with his mother at this boarding house on 26 North Georgia Avenue Katherine Scarfo seen in this footage had a reputation for being a tough lady leave us alone we're not bothering nobody leave us alone in 1970 the New Jersey state commission investigated organized crime and subpoena mom ERS in the area everyone from the boss down to Nikki Scarfo on the stand both Bruno and Scarfo took the fifth and in response the feds charged the men with contempt and sent them off to Yardville prison in prison scarpo tried to bond with Bruno to no avail after serving a 32-month sentence Bruno was released but before he left he gave Scarfo 10 paper clips it was Bruno's way of telling Scaro that he was a worthless member of the Philadelphia mob not even worth 10 paper clips in July 1973 Scarfo returned to Atlantic City and met a smalltime crook named Nick the crow caramandi I did burglaries anything stole cars resold cars flim flams a lot of flim PL at the time caramandi wasn't a mob member but Scarfo didn't care the crow knew how to make money I would work with him sometimes and he would come up with the suckers and I would uh sell him to deal he was so happy because he was just a soldier at the time he wasn't making any money you know any big money in turn caramandi operated without fear because he had the backing of the Philly mob he gave me the okay to Rob anybody I wanted to and don't worry about nothing in those days caramandi got to see a different side of Nikki Scarfo while the mobster enjoyed high-profile hits he kept his personal life private he was just a quiet you know nice looking guy dressed well very like tailored clothes well groomed always meticulous about his clothes uh his hair qua behind the Swagger Scarfo HIIT a slew of insecurities he had a high-pitched voice and a complex about his height Little Nikki became a moniker that was used in his uh early days in the M but was never used in his presence that was an instant death sentence on November 2nd 1976 New Jersey legalized gambling in Atlantic City after decades in Decay the city changed overnight the skyline transformed into an Empire of casinos I I think everybody will profit from it really not just uh the big people I think even the small people will get something too but New Jersey governor Brendan burn sent a clear message to the Mob keep your filthy hands out of Atlantic City keep the hell out of our [Music] state but that didn't deter Nikki Scarfo who found a way to get rich off the casinos early on he recognized that Atlantic City sat at top of Barrier Island and casino construction would require reinforced concrete that year Scarfo and his nephew Phil leonetti started a construction company they called it scarf Inc developers soon discovered they had no choice but to hire scarf Inc going against Nikki Scarfo could be deadly if you look at the record in Atlantic City I think the first six casino hotels that were built scarfing did the subcontracting work the cement work but scarfo's business Ambitions didn't end there he teamed up with his friend Frank jeras who ran Local 54 the bartenders and hotel workers union with more than 10,000 members the union was the most powerful in Atlantic City with a simple phone call Scarfo could put bartenders and waiters on strike shutting down bars and restaurants across the city Frank jeras tightened his grip on Local 54 and paid the mobster to watch his back he was getting about 203 Grand uh a month just delivered in an envelope from from the union other union leaders knew to stay away from Scarfo and his goons those who didn't keep Scarfo happy paid the price the public execution of Judge Edwin halant at the Flamingo Motel sent a message to Atlantic City no one goes against Nikki Scarfo [Music] in 1976 gambling had been legalized in Atlantic City and Nikki Scarfo was there to stake his claim despite the efforts of politicians to keep the mafia away Scarfo found ways to benefit from the boom while he was becoming one of the most powerful men in Atlantic City the mobster still wanted more he wanted control over the Philly mob but the gentle Dawn Angelo Bruno was still in power something or someone had to give 1979 developers expected to spend more than $1 billion over the next decade in the construction of Boardwalk casinos that meant big money for Nikki scarfo's concrete company scarf Inc but a fellow contractor named Vincent Falcone thought Scarfo did subpar work and ran his mouth all over town he had no idea how dangerous talk could be he said in his opinion Nikki Scarfo and Nikki scarfo's nephew Phil dianetti were crazy and should be banned from the concrete business his comments annoy Scarfo to the point where Scarfo wants to whack him on December 16th 197 9 Scarfo invited Falcone to a New Jersey beach house Scarfo was joined by his nephew Phil leonetti his friend Larry Marino and a plumbing contractor named Joseph Salerno as the group settled in the living room Scarfo asked Falcone to go get glasses from the kitchen so they could mix some drinks he goes into the kitchen has his back turned to leonetti and Scarfo real big mistake there leonetti comes up behind him with a gun puts a bullet in the back of the head he slumps down scarel jumps up all excited leans over says he's still breathing give him another one and leonetti shoots him in the chest Joseph Salerno feared he might be next yet he complied with scarfo's orders to tie up Falcone's body cowboy style and right before they come and cover the head Scarfo looks directly at the corpse the head and says I love this I absolutely love this scarfo's men dropped Falcone's body in the trunk of his Mercury where the police found it a day later that captures the absolute blood lust of what Scara was all about it also captures what the problem with Scara was because he had a witness there Joseph Salerno terrified by the crime and its possible implications Salerno called the cops a week later New Jersey cops Tracked Down Scaro Larry Marino and Phil leonetti and arrested all three men Scarfo got out on Bond and though his trial was set for the following year he went about life as usual back on the street business was booming for Scarfo his concrete company scarf Inc had five new casino hotels under contract and with a strangle hole in the local bartenders Union the mobster had connections all over town scarel had a piece of everything that was going on the casinos the violence the money the bartenders Union uh the construction he was Center Stage Mobsters from New York came to Atlantic City looking for a piece of the action back in Philadelphia while the New York crime families reached in Boss Angelo Bruno looked the other way it was a sign of weakness and Angelo Bruno appeared to his peers to be ill prepared to take over the enormous responsibilities and also the opportunities to make huge amounts of money so his new consiliary Anthony bananas caponigro decided to take matters into his own hands on March 21st 1980 Angelo Bruno was driven home from dinner at cz's Little Italy a mob associate was behind the wheel they pull in front of Bruno's home right off the corner of tenth and Snider they're sitting there talking Bruno lights a cigarette and and the mob assoc pushes the automatic buttons to lower the window this a man emerged out of the shadows and put a double barreled shot gun behind Bruno's right ear and fired the gentle Don was killed instantly what was transmitted from the scene was a grotesque image of his mouth a gape and the you know bloody remnants of of a double barrel shotgun being discharged into your head the New York mafia was Furious they had not sanctioned the hit on Bruno capgro would pay the ultimate price for disobeying one of the mafia's Cardinal rules he died a horrible death I mean they hit him with hammers hatches pipes then shot him 13 times then put a $20 bull up his ass the message is this guy got too greedy and that's why he's dead after Bruno's murder his under boss Philip Chicken Man Testa was appointed boss Testa saw himself as scarfo's mentor and elevated the soldier to Consul yeri a dramatic jump for a man who came from humble beginnings Scarfo had proven he wasn't afraid of violence he used it whenever he felt the need he took a gun out and he put two in the back of the head or he had somebody else take guns out and put two in the back of the head October 1980 Nikki Scarfo Larry Merlino and Phil leonetti went on trial for the murder of cement contractor Vincent Falcone witness for the prosecution Joseph Salerno recounted the entire murder but the jury was moved by scarfo's key witness a police officer who vouched for The mobster's Alibi Scarfo received a favorable verdict not guilty thank God for the American Jewelry system an honest jewelry the mob then returned to the street they're really empowered they're really energized and they're beyond the reach of the law Nikki Scarfo was now ready to take over the family that had banished him the outcast wanted to be boss Philadelphia 1980 16 years after he was sent to Atlantic City Nikki Scarfo landed the role of Consul in the powerful Philadelphia mob the 51-year-old was known as a successful Money Maker a cold-blooded killer and a man beyond the Law's [Music] Reach In 1980 Scarfo earned more than $300,000 from Local 54 the union he controlled another Union Leader looked to get in on the action his name was John McCulla and he wanted to split Local 54 into two unions and control one of them but Scarfo wasn't about to share with anyone Scaro complained about mulla's efforts he was told that Mulla would be told to stop Mulla never stopped so Scarfo stepped in on December 16th 1980 a man arrived at mulla's front door with a surprise Christmas time delivery he's got like five or six plants carries a couple plants up to the door knocks on the door and Audrey McCulla mulla's wife answers she graciously asked the stranger inside and showed him where to leave the bright red poinsetta Arrangements while John McCulla chatted on the kitchen phone the delivery man went for his second load he comes back in with the plant and Audrey MC is turns to her husband John and says how much of a tip should we give it's Christmas time we should give him a nice tip but before Mulla could reach into his wallet the delivery man walked toward him pulled out a 22 caliber pistol and pumped Six Bullets into his head and neck the hit wasn't solely scarfo's doing recently appointed mob boss Philip Testa had given Scarfo permission to order the murder unlike former boss Angelo Bruno Tesa didn't oppose violence but less than a year into his Reign that policy would catch up with him against the advice of some Close Associates Tesa had selected an old school member of the Philadelphia mob as his underboss his name was Peter cassella under Mafia rules cassella would be next in line should anything happen to Tesa so cassella decided to make something happen on March 14th 1981 cassella ordered a nail bomb with 21 sticks of dynamite to be planted under testa's front porch Philip Testa arrived home in the early morning of the next day from across the street someone from cella's crew watched his every move the kid who built the bomb is sitting in a van across the street he's got a remote control Detonator and Testa walks up the steps and it's just as he's about to go in the door he hits the button and the bomb blows Testa through his front door Philadelphia police officer Francis Friel was the lieutenant assigned to homicide that night in the police administration building we could actually hear the sound of the explosion uh the homicide division responded there found the home in shambles tesa's lower body was shredded the police lieutenant and his Squad were told minutes later the mob boss had died the entire back of his clothing was burned off third degree burns on his leg and his back as a result of the explosion in the flame many in the Philadelphia mob suspected Peter cassella had ordered the hit and the New York mafia had not sanctioned it but cassella gets a pass cassella is older and basically he's put on a shelf he's told to go to Florida don't ever come back with cassella out of the way the New York mafia appointed Nikki Scarfo boss of the Philly mob the former Street Punk had no role in the Bruno in Testa murders and Rose to the Top by chance unlike his predecessors who lived in Philadelphia Scarfo stayed in Atlantic City and ran the mob from a distance no matter what the rank and file said the people here in Philadelphia resented and considered Scarfo as an interloper that was imported from Atlantic City having no real knowledge skills or ability to run this organization the 52-year-old boss surrounded himself with men he trusted he named his longtime friend Chucky Marino under boss and his nephew Phil leonetti Captain mob associate Nick caramandi was assigned to one of scarfo's extortion Crews we started a tax which Angelo brunal never had we taxed every bookmaker in the city anybody that had drugs anybody doing anything illegal they had to pay tax those who refused to pay were assaulted or killed and it created a level of violence that would rival anything in the country had seen in terms of murder and bloodshed on the streets for Philadelphia mob associate and major Money Maker Frankie Flowers Del fonso scarfo's demands were too much he would not want to pay the tax he would resist it and Scara would not tolerate such disrespect on October 29th 1981 he sent two of his men to beat up Delano just outside Philadelphia's Italian Market the attackers hit his legs torso and head with an 18in steel shaft and a baseball bat they just didn't beat up Frankie flowers they nearly beat him to death this public beating was a far cry from the days of the gentle Dawn they want everybody to know we're here we got the power and this is what we're going to do to you if you say anything to law enforcement when police questioned Alonso he said he had been run over by a truck but Scarfo and his goons were already on law enforcement's radar in Pennsylvania and New Jersey his frequent travels between Atlantic City and Philadelphia made it easier for law enforcement to travel his whereabouts we put together an intelligence base and we tried to know what he was going to be doing every day of the week to the best we could Nikki Scarfo loved the spotlight and showing off the luxuries a life of crime afforded him he would visit the local hot spots uh he was recognized as a celebrity as were many of his underlings Scarfo would take the whole gang out to dinner and they'd get them the good table and probably most of the time they didn't pay pay the check either they just got up and left and it was like a production in late 1981 a small time Atlantic City politician named Michael Matthews needed cash he wanted to be the next mayor of Atlantic City and turned to the Scarfo mob for help if elected he'd hand over control of the city's Planning and Zoning to the Mob everybody wanted to be our friends there was no limit to what he could do I mean that's how much power he yeah on June 15th 1982 Michael Matthews won the election and he made good on his promise to the Mob the mayor of the city would have did anything we said he was with Scarfo Nikki Scarfo seemed Unstoppable but as boss the mobster knew he had a Target on his back and became paranoid Scara was coming apart at the seams and willing to take out anyone in his way everybody knew who scorer was how treacherous he was how dis loyalty was this guy he the boss but watch your [Music] back Philadelphia 1982 53-year-old Nikki Scarfo was King of the Philadelphia Underworld the mafia boss had infiltrated the Atlantic City mayor's office and Local 54 the city's most powerful union he was raking in thousands and living a lavish lifestyle but this man known for violence and power was about to lose [Music] control in July 1982 the US third Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a federal gun charge against Nikki Scarfo it was a charge the mobster had been fighting for more than a year when police confiscated a daringer from his apartment Scarfo was found guilty for possess posession of a gun by a convicted felon and the authorities were able to prove it was really his gun and as a result of that he went to jail a month later the Philly mob boss was transferred to a federal prison in Texas to start serving a 2-year sentence from behind bars scarfield continued to run the mob's day-to-day operations and five of his most trusted men were in charge of overseeing its Street Affairs the group included Captain Salvatore Testa I used to see him socially my friends with his friends in the same night clubs and he was a fantastic person he had hazel eyes real long eyelashes but when he smiled and you saw those dimples you just wanted to grab him the 28-year-old was son of former mafia boss Philip Testa and a ruthless killer in his own right salvi testic became prominent in the Philadelphia organized crime family because because of his skill and his expertise Tesa proved to be very very efficient in killing people on behalf of Nikki Scarfo the truth be told about that he was loyal to Scarfo in 1982 a group within the Philly mob known as the Rick aini Brothers ranked first on scarfo's enemy list when Angelo Bruno was boss the Rabin were allowed to do business independently and didn't share their profits with the mob and while that worked under Bruno it didn't work under Scarfo but the riob beanis refused to give Scarfo any cut of their profits and in response Scaro sent out a crew of Hitmen to teach them a lesson we were looking for 12 or 13 guys and we go out every day and every night looking for one of these guys on the list the Rabin were hard to track down after two failed attempts on Harry The Hunchback rabini a Gangland stop war broke out on the streets of South Philadelphia on May 13th 1982 Scaro celi Frank Monty became the first victim of the war he was shot five times in the head and back by members of the rabini faction in retaliation scarfo's crew murdered several of their men many in broad daylight and within full view of the public the 2 years of bloodshed came to be known as the rabini wars the conflict ended when all the members of the rabini faction were either dead imprisoned or run out of town and the person who really took control and the leadership with respect to that war on behalf of Scarfo was really Sal Testa at one point he almost lost an arm because he got ambushed I mean he's out there doing stuff for Scarfo helping Scarfo solidify his hold on the family in January 1984 when Scarfo was released from prison in Texas Phil leonetti and S Testa traveled cross country to celebrate the boss's Freedom the next day news crews captured this footage of scarfo's return to Philadelphia no I have no comment please let me get two months later the mafia boss made headlines again but this time the news wasn't good a Federal indictment revealed the ties between Atlantic city mayor Michael Matthews and the Philadelphia mob scarfo's control of Planning and Zoning in Atlantic City was shattered just a month later another article investigated the Philadelphia mob this time the story was focused not on Nikki Scarfo but his young Captain s Testa in the article Testa was called the fastest rising star in Philadelphia's organized crime family the article also said Testa was on the brink of controlling the city's Mafia Scarfo was clearly bothered by his protege's Fame for Scarfo it was look at this guy look at the who do he think he is kind of thing at public Gatherings and parties others noticed a cooling of the relationship between the mafia boss and his Capo scarfi would be in one part of the room test and his friends would be on the other side and they acted as if they didn't even know that the other was there at the time s Testa was engaged to the daughter of Chucky Merino who was scarfo's under boss but in the spring of 1984 Testa got cold feet and broke off the engagement and they had all big wedding playing all the invitations went out Chucky Marino would not tolerate such dishonor and made sure the boss understood it appears to me said Chucky that this guy wants to take over your position boss he disrespected you he disrespects me he disrespects my daughter it didn't take much convincing for Scarfo to believe that Sal Testa might try to OU him as boss Scarfo assigned a crew to murder the young Capo we just had to go along with the program we made 17 attempts to try to kill we just couldn't get them in the end it took testa's most loyal friend Joey onori to lure him to his death on September 14th 1984 Tesa agreed to meet patori at a candy shop in Philadelphia's Italian Market inside the store a Hitman caught Testa off guard and shot him twice in the head carami was one of the men assigned to clean up the mess and dump tesa's body in a ditch in New Jersey we tried to throw him uh you know like on the side of the road pretty far back but somehow his leg was popping up afterward punitor and his crew went out to celebrate crazy is it kill somebody then you go out and have a you know party figure that one out but the party was over federal agents were about to move [Music] in [Music] Philadelphia 1985 when gangster Nikki scarbo took over his boss of the Philadelphia mob he met opposition within the family and then quickly wiped out his enemies the new boss even took out his most trusted associate a man who had never betrayed him Salvadore Testa no one was safe from scarfo's wrath he was feared by everybody they heard his name uh a [Music] show by 1985 Nikki Scarfo had cash coming in from Philadelphia and Atlantic City but the mob boss wanted more the following year Philadelphia officials discussed plans for Penn's Landing a multi-million dollar project that would revive the city's Waterfront before the project could move forward the developer Willard Rous the third would need to get the plan approved by that District's councilman Leland bellof Nikki Scarfo saw an opportunity he had contacts in boff's office and could help Rouse get his project approved for the right price scarfo's associate Nick caramandi scheduled a meeting with one of Rouse's men and made the Shady proposal if Rouse paid Scarfo he could guarantee city council approval of Penn's Landing and he said well what is it going to cost you know so I said at least a million dollars to start with so let go tell your boss his project manager comes back he says boss so they brought this guy to me who had a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and he tells me he wants a million bucks for this thing to go through and what are we going to do Rouse knew better than to take his chances and went straight to the FBI 8:00 a.m. the next day he was in the office and we were lucky enough to be able to say is this the guy you met he didn't know his name but he described him and it was Nick caramandi to a T from that point forward the feds assigned an undercover agent to pose as a rouse representative Scaro and his men had no idea the feds were building a case against them meanwhile the mob boss went on vacation to Fort Lauderdale Florida there he bought a luxurious mansion and a 40ft yacht mob Associates often visited as did his mistress of more than 10 years a cocktail waitress known only as Chicago but the beach getaway wasn't a cure for scarfo's mounting troubles at the time he was unhappy with his under boss Chucky Merlino a drunk who often skipped meetings with the boss scarel saw merlino's actions as a sign of disrespect and worried his under boss had designs on his job worse yet marlino had a group of loyal followers if he wanted to make a move against Scarfo he had the manpower to do it Scarfo called on his longtime associate Nick caramandi for advice and he wanted to see if we were part of any conspiracy and he knew I wasn't you know but he wanted to check it out Scaro considered killing Merino but settled for demoting him back to Soldier the boss called caramandi and asked him to keep tabs on Merino he said the first little thing he does wrong anything if he sneezes wrong he was going to kill him within weeks the problem was solved when Merino was sent to jail for trying to bribe a police officer in reality scarfo's under boss hadn't planned anything against the family the boss was losing it back in Atlantic City the FBI continued to build their extortion cases against Scarfo and his associates for their role in the pens Landing deal on June 16th 1986 the feds finally hit Pay Dirt a surveillance camera recorded these images of Scarfo caramandi and two other mob Associates meeting on the Atlantic City Boardwalk 4 months later Nick caramandi was indicted on extortion charges and karamad is sitting in jail realizing he's screwed up scarfo's real really annoyed Karam knew firsthand how Nikki Scarfo settled every problem he had seen the mafia boss take out others for Less yeah it took me 3 days thinking about it and thinking about it worrying about it I had no other choice I called the FBI and that's how I turned the feds now had one of scarfo's closest Associates in their back pocket and he was ready to share everything he knew in court on January 8th 1987 federal agents arrested Scarfo at the Atlantic City Airport the feds finally had the boss in handcuffs he was charged with conspiracy to commit extortion 4 months later Scarfo went on trial his longtime friend in mob associate Nick caramandi sat on the witness stand I'd be honest stand he'd be sitting right there where you're at I'd have to look at him and I had people in the audience making signs that would go like this it wasn't easy in his first six years as boss authorities had brought a murder charge against Nikki Scarfo but the boss had walked out of court a free man but this time was different karam's testimony was too damning the 59-year-old received a guilty verdict and was sentenced to 14 years in prison but law enforcement wasn't done with Scarfo the following year Federal authorities threw the book at him again they charged Scara with nine murders including the hits on Judge Edwin halant and Salvatore Testa and the attempted murder of Harry rabini you're talking about an indictment that would rival the the Manhattan telephone directory on May 11th 1989 the jury delivered scarfo's ver verdict guilty on all counts prosecutors added a 55e sentence on to his 14-year prison term Scara was going away for good we proved it was a group that was committed to Greed to Street tax to violence that's how they lived and that was the thing that eventually brought them down Nikki Scarfo ran the Philadelphia mob from prison for a couple of years years until John stanfa got the top spot in 1991 Nikki Scarfo is currently serving out his sentence in Atlanta Georgia his projected release date is 2033 but it's unlikely the Aging mobster will live to see life on the outside again the brief time that he was a shining star I think was probably the high point of his life and now the price he's paying is something probably he's willing to pay after scarfo's conviction prosecutors turned six of his men into Federal Witnesses including scarfo's own nephew Phil leonetti the Scarfo brought about his own downfall through his propensity for violence that's what caused his subordinates to testify because a fear of him doing to them what he had them do to others because the way Scarfo ran his mom there was nothing but treachery deceit double crossing triple Crossing and paranoia if there was a course on Mob management there would be a whole chapter devoted to Nikki scarel and his management would be called management suicide mob insiders believe Nikki Scarfo should never have been boss and his time at the top tells the story of the demise of the American Mafia thank you for watching this video please subscribe to our Channel and check out more of our content feel free to give your feedback suggestions on what we should do next
