John Travolta Explains Scientology's Silent Births | Friday Night With Jonathan Ross

please welcome Mr Jones [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you look great how nice to have John Travolta here it's so exciting I'm really I'm really genuine excited sir and it takes a lot to get me excited these days as I was saying you're like a proper movie star is this something that comes to you naturally did you always have this Charisma on screen or is it something you can learn oh gosh I don't know how to answer that I think you have to help me with that one I I was born with it I'm wondering whether you is that what you meant I don't know if it's explainable but uh well you've got a funny looking face but it's a very attractive face you know what I'm saying though because it's a face it's one of those places well it shouldn't work but it does it's harder it's true it's beautiful in its own way thank you you've been told this before I'm sure no I love looking at your face I can look at your face all day oh come on I've asked my wife to have it tattooed on her breasts he hasn't answered me yet uh John's over here because he's got a new movie out in the UK I've seen the film we're going to talk about in a minute but first of all did you fly yourself in did you fly yourself in under your own steam in your own plane I did ah I'm I'm incredible that must be just about the greatest feeling it can be yes I've been doing a long time and that's got to be a pretty big plane you're doing it from the US to here yes what size pain it's a Boeing 707 oh that's a proper big plane that's a huge Point how many people do you have on the plane with you when you're flying over well it used to have when it was an airline service probably at 150 but uh for me it has about 30 people uh possible to and what do you do with the rest of the space you've got a bowling alley bedrooms you've got a living room you have bedrooms in the living room on a plate this is the greatest thing I've heard in my entire life you can live on your plane you can uh there you are dressed up as a pilot and you are a proper pilot you can actually do that for will how long did it take you to learn to fly a play as big as that oh 57 years no no I've been flying for 35 years wow so it's mostly an adult life then and I've been flying jets for uh 25 years and is there and don't check this the wrong way but could you actually crash when Landing in terms of these days because the computer knows where the ground is doesn't it and you're kind of steering it I guess tell me if technically I've got this wrong but then you and you do that near the ground now but the computer can do that for you can't it Auto Land yeah does it do that on your plane no we don't have Auto Land that's but that must be telephone when you're coming in there must be a moment no no that's the fun part I wouldn't want to give that away to a computer yeah have you had any hairy moments any scary bits when you're when you're trying to land and it's well like accounts run out or something you know take off slam these are my favorite part but they're the most dangerous part aren't they before they are but they're also the most fun parts now this is one believe it or not this is one of John Travolta's house is that why sir yes that that's the house you can see why he's got parked where most of us have and you know a like a Previa or something is that the big plane that you flew over here on yes it is and so you've got a Runway leading up to your house you think that's braggadocious of me I think it's incredible do you let your wife reverse the plane and ever or do you know are you allowed to just fly when everyone can you just go yeah I'm going out darling I can fly whenever I want that's the beauty of it you've got the greatness life of anyone I may I may just have that you're like a proper superhero or something do you have more than one Pine I have two plants oh my God where do you keep the other plate right next to it what up it would be a nightmare living next to him imagine trying to keep up eholders have got another jet um it's a love of yours do you love that more than making films you think than acting do you think flying is when you're your happiest no I think it's one of the times I'm I'm happy but I love acting first and and it just happens to be another passion of mine you know I believe that you can have more than one yes this is yes true and the other planes kept ready sort of loaded with uh petrol all year round ready to go oh yes and you need another pilot sitting next to you when you fly oh yes okay and where do you get the other pilot from if you want to fly out in a hurry just go to the shops or something they either live uh on the premise or they live in a house nearby so you have you you have you bought some Pilots as well how many Pilots two planes and three Pilots I've got a scooter but I'm working I've got a car and a scooter when I'm working up maybe to a maybe I don't know a glider do you do I think have you ever done that without the powder because you do ultra light so do you know what they are are they the wing things they're the little tiny paintings in the James Bond movie yeah I like them a lot would you like to have been James Bond John I would have yeah I wanted to do James Bible although this new guy is awesome he's great did you like him don't you yeah fantastic although he looks a bit like Sid James do you know who said James he's the one I've liked the most since uh since Sean Sean Connery yeah Sean yes I danced with Sean Connery once you know everyone says that okay there was a party about uh about 10 years ago for Frank Sinatra's before he passed on obviously but uh I was about to leave with my my wife and he said John where are you going and I said we got to go home I'm going to work tomorrow morning he said not before you dance with me you're not and you're not going to say no to Sean Connery you better was it a pop-up was it a dance like that who was the lead he was an island but it was then everybody wanted to dance with me after that he made me popular John is does everyone saying to you I want to see you dance would you dance when did you learn to dance the whole dance some of it I don't know what senior but some of it I create too I mean I sometimes I just enjoy doing it you know so it's not always uh imposed on me it's a self-inflicted thing in Pulp Fiction when Quentin got you to do the the Fantastic dance with Uma Thurman which is just a sort of one of the defining moments of that movie uh that was something he scripted in already and you knew what you're going to do except that he only had the twist in mind and I told him I said you know there are more dances than just the twists I said when I was a kid there were novelty dancers like the swim yeah and The Hitchhiker and the you know the Batman yeah so I said if you're smart you would use all those dances and just uh film them call them out or something so he agreed to that I said just the twist might be too much for that length that movie really kind of turned your career around again though didn't it because you had the big hit early on and then you had a series of movies it didn't do as well did you ever worry anything okay that's it for me the acting more or less has gone away now was there a period when you stopped receiving Scripts not too bad I mean oh I think once you establish yourself at the level I did there's always scripts on your in your that are possible it's just uh what are they and you know whether you want to do them and what quality are they but uh yeah Pulp Fiction gave him my second Academy Award nomination and that gave me uh everything up till today yeah all the good uh films I've done in the last uh 12 years all right let's talk about the new movie because it's a very timely film in that uh your man of a certain age I'm a man of a certain age when a man gets for certain age he maybe feels that life's run away with him and he wants to have one last guard Freedom at wildness and that's kind of one of the ideas behind Wild Hogs isn't it sure well you know we're we're a bunch of guys that hang out on the weekends uh what we do is we have these Harley-Davidsons and we it's a hobby and when uh we get together uh it's just beer and and uh a chat you know so I uh I have the bright idea of taking uh the bikes on the road a long road trip across the United States and I seduced the guys into doing it uh except they don't know that I have a bunch of Secrets and I'm escaping something uh but they they fall for it and uh we hit the road the road hits back and you land them in trouble on the way but it's it's great fun it's a comedy more than anything else it's sort of a serious idea behind it as well uh what a great cast with you though I'm a big fan of Martin Lawrence I love Willie Mike Macy movies uh and I would imagine I would hope that it was much fun to make as it is to watch it was a blast we had a lot of time more laughs between takes and did you wind all your own bikes in it or did you have stunt bikers at various well we had some but most of them we had to ride because they were we were quite visible uh you know so I I enjoyed every bit of making it I mean it was long days and but with that all the energy of the those special talents it was a it was easy to keep going because I didn't think you did the long days I'd read somewhere and I don't think it was the first time I gave into the long days in a long time but and when you when you do these multiple star films you have to get concede it used to be I read somebody had a context and you wouldn't work past six o'clock at night yeah that's true I wanted to see my kids that's a great idea if you've got the power to do that why not well that's I actually got it from Gene Hackman he told me he I said you can put limits on these things and he told me he could and I said you know that's a good idea I'd like to have a family life too and not just work till midnight every night and it worked I got to see I got to put the kids to bed and I got to have dinner with my wife and I got to learn my lines and go to sleep and if I didn't do that I wouldn't have been able to so it was actually a very healthy thing and it changed a lot of Hollywood's thinking so he managed to get that balance and he owns two planes and three products isn't that a life you would like to know what is right to live hey John if Ricky was to ask you to be an extras and I don't know if he would have are you familiar with extras do you know when you in parts of Germany you're now officially married if you slept you have to do what he says Ricky would you like John on have you got a part for John yes and if we're married I'm divorced and I want the two planes hey do you have a big cleanup show I know this is a very personal question but in America you get married you've got to look after your planes I'm not telling you anymore go away what sort of Segway is that well you just mentioned divorce you know the way my brain knows it barely factions I just I want it to be an extras let's get this signed now this is a contract he's in the extra special deal okay sounds good brilliant in England that is binding you know what all right in a minute why don't you come out and you two dance together and then it will be official okay um uh John I'm just enamel of your work I love seeing you on screen um I I like the way you live your life from the sound of things so we've dutched it on your dancing in a roundabout way uh let me ask you a question here and I'm not going to mock this because um I know it's an important thing to you I want to ask you about scientology sure because you're one of the two most kind of famous practitioners I don't know if that's the correct word of Scientology There's Tom Cruise of course we will know about and you for many years have talked about it what have you got out of it and how do you make uh or what do you make of of the the scorn that many people pour upon uh Scientology it seems to be that you come in for more Flack than any other Faith or belief system out there well I don't know about that as much anymore but uh certainly um you know I've been involved 32 years in Scientology and it's given me all the tools to survive in life that I need and it helps so many people and we we're we're all over the world and we we go out of our way to help people and whether it's natural disasters or personal help but their their lives and I've always found it an enormous help and tool for me to survive better and right from the start I I always had a a wherewithal because of that their help to never self-destruct you know I could always use the tools to better myself and become more able and More in communication with people and and have more fun you know now one of the things that was in the news over here about scientology was recently of course um Tom Cruise and his lovely wife have had a baby uh and and he became a newsworthy in the papers that apparently scientologists believe that a birth should be silent if possible uh and I know your wife is a Scientologist did you achieve that did you have silence it's pretty simple stuff really all it is is when paint there's a lot of pain involved in a birth or there can be for the baby and for the wife and and often uh verbiage is recorded and in the mind so a baby maybe even if he doesn't understand what's going on we'll hear the sound or get the impressions of the emotions yes and they can be anything from what the doctors are saying or the fears or the concerns of the people around and uh it's just so even when a person has an accident uh or hurts themselves it's just better to be quiet when they're uh being but here's the thing I'm asking you how do you manage that because when my wife's of the baby there were times when she was calling me some things which are all right maybe history is prove to correct but the world noise is different than verbiage okay would be a bad thing yeah screams if you have to is fine but it's the it's the it's the same thing the content of the of the meaning of a word that could have impingement later on in life do you see and that's what you don't want but if you want to make noise it's fine uh okay now John like me yes that's why he's the constant struggle with his weight is this right Johnny recent years no yeah you'd get big and you get small again now you did I went you want a special diet were you yeah I've gained maybe you know 10 15 pounds and I lose 10 or 15 pounds but no I don't mean you're a grotesque and can't you needed a forklift truck together okay I mean you're a man who okay I would like to eat now because you've kept me here for 17 hours and I'm starved do you have anything to eat at all thank you not all have done that for me as well how many of those could you eat in one sitting do you reckon one because one one that's all what's wrong with you well if you had a pizza I'd eat the whole pizza all right have one do you have one I have one I don't really want one now I need got my hands dirty you don't want one now I bought your Donuts yeah I haven't had dinner yet and this is dessert stop whining [Music] no let's not talk for me let's just enjoy the moment [Laughter] [Applause] [Music] this is like we're making love or something or something how's John that's all I can't eat anymore I wish I bought you a pizza oh now that's a better idea look just just leave that there maybe leave it that's on eBay tonight John how long are you spending in the UK or when you go back to the United States and how do you intend to spend the rest of the year the sugar is kicked in yeah Ricky hey Gervais Ricky do you want to come out and dance with John before
