baltimore selects as the first choice in the draft quarterback john elway of stanford we had been in discussions with him two or three months before the draft that i was not going to play in baltimore that if that came to it i was going to play baseball for the yankees and i was fortunate to have an option i was looked at as bucking the system but i was actually the first guy to have a choice to do something else it happened so fast and all of a sudden you you had to grow up like that and elway with some protection throwing it to the end zone for samson he's got the ball touchdown we've been struggling all day offensively and we finally got some momentum and guessing things going and here comes the blood cell way throws into the right flat to miles 20 10 5 touchdowns gusty miles elway is back here comes the safety blitz first down well height at the tenth height at the five we'll hike to the goal being able to do that my rookie year helped my confidence and plus it was a great feeling to do against the colts i think that's what the broncos made five million dollars for he had the athletic mobility to get out of trouble and that's when he was really dangerous you let him get out of that pocket and all of a sudden somebody comes open somewhere running to his left on the scramble now stops still has all kinds of time to the end zone to steve watson for a touchdown here comes the blitz and elway throwing it to the end zone for butch johnson touchdown he's got the ball fakes the handoff to winder has to roll away from trouble shoots the pass to the end zone touchdown it was michael jordan in some ways just give him the ball and get out of his way saw john elway being doing the thing i think he does the best being a lucy back there you know he's able to move and throw and i think that's the sign of the ultimate passive john elway's in the shotgun with third down and 16 coming up for denver look at that rush by pitts but elway gets away from it on the run he's got watson open and steve watson's down to the one-yard line there's a time clock that goes off in your mind and from the back side it's just a reaction to where you think it's time to go he throws the ball across the field across his body like you're not supposed to do here's a blitz he gets it away he's got his touchdown denver elway back and throwing it up the near side sampson on the run with brown leaping catch by clint sampson at the 17-yard line you can debate on so many things who's the greatest who did this the best john's ability to improvise and to find a way to win is the greatest i've ever seen throwing it toward the end zone for watching he's open touchdown elway in the count takes the snap as a little protection runs up in the pocket throwing it toward the end zone for watch and he's open touchdown and hand the ball to sewell and sewell wants to throw the pass to john elway he does at the 14th of the pen at the back touchdown [Applause] always looking for seven he's got a man touchdown vince johnson still five minutes to go but they need something out of this drive his drive against the cleveland browns is legendary we walked in knowing that it was a do-or-die situation there was nothing else to either go to the super bowl we're going home elway's dropped the play fake runs up in the pocket running left john's across the 20 and out to the 26 yard line once we got a couple first downs at that point in time we felt like we were wrong the pass for sewell got it and keeps it at the 48-yard line and was he hammered the drive was an unbelievable thing he just kept making plays the snap to elway the look the throw touchdown the mark jackson 98 and a half yard drive ball is down carlos's kick is on the way and it is gone the denver broncos have come from behind to win it in overtime and the broncos are headed for pasadena two weeks from today jackson goes in motion elway up the middle touchdown no way with a lot of time and a lot of arm and a complete pass to steve watson that the giant 32 out of bounds stops the clock how many quarterbacks do you think can do that none go back scramble to the left throw across the field that's not an arm that's a that late game magic a lot of times wish i could play the whole game like they're doing a two-minute job just because there's no fear you can say what you want to i don't think i want anybody back for the fog right at the touchdown two of the three amigos already with a long recession and this is steve sewell who's gonna throw he throws back to elway the other way inside the 20 down to the 13-yard line john back to throw and throwing it long for mark jackson he's open ball coming [Applause] now the pressure and he's heaving it long up field for an open mark jackson and a touchdown elway looks throws and it is caught some touchdown the fake and elway rolling to his right here comes the pressure he steps away from it and heaves it long to a wide open mark jackson at the 18 at the 15th five touchdowns he was playing in a highlight reel where the spotlight was on him he just looked shinier brighter than all the other players elway [Applause] gets away again and throws for jackson touchdown mike shanahan said before the game he had a special blitz he thought we'd get there and it's going to get there there it is but elway breaks away his strength and gets a block [Applause] elway tries a deep one to jackson [Applause] touchdown regulation time need a touchdown to tie gets away from nash got a man open downfield with a flag down johnson to the end zone touchdown but there's a flag down decline touchdown broncos not too bad this time the luck's going to be very bad as porter can't put him down elway throws and it turns into a freak play as orson mowgli makes the catch second and long elway slipping but then alluding the rush and going long for jackson he's got it and out of bounds at the 25-yard line so from the 38 elway drops back he wants to go long he does johnson touchdown now on third and 10. that's michael dean perry he can't catch elway who now throws it downfield complete rona canton what a throw i can't believe it elway running full speed left and throwing the ball up to his left now this is where he's at his best watch how he just flips the ball right up over the top no way look at him dance in that pocket now he throws long for young again michael young all the way to the 20-yard line yeah we started today and welcoming you to denver talking about the greatness of that man john elway and it certainly it gives you shivers when a great players do great things and elway doesn't disappoint you often back to throw looks left scrambles left go to run runs to the 30 pulls up throws to the end zone touchdown denver these are the lone deep when your quarterback is making plays like that it lifts your entire team 53 seconds left fourth and ten for the 37 looking for mark jackson deep he got away from door and it's complete third and nine low snap elway gathers it and looks for the bomb he's got russell third and two denver the pocket holds up well elway's got a man touchdown michael young in denver didn't ask for more john elway has a chance here i remember running on the field going this is our one chance to prove that the yarder we did in cleveland 1986 was was no fluke from the end zone looks down the middle ball is caught by michael young across the 20. he'll wait a pass on this important fourth down play being chased out of the pocket scrambling to the left he will run and get the first down at the 35 yard line he's back to pass spoilers bring four elway scampers out now throws caught by vance johnson and down the sidelines do you believe that here's the snap the kick is good and this place has gone bananas as the broncos with one of their greatest come from behind wins always the 40 unloads at the 30-yard line it will be arthur michael into the end zone [Applause] he's kind of holding his left hand against the side he's all right [Music] second and five momentum of the offense for the charges here comes o'neil again and elway steps away from the gun la has four wides steps up and goes deep johnson has it to the 20-yard line 56 yards elway to johnson milburn in the slot to the bottom of your screen elway looked for him but he's not open so he goes across the middle and russell wide open for the touchdown 10-0 elway fires one deep and it's caught by did anybody touch him he gets back up [Applause] vance johnson this is where he's dangerous on the run he's throwing for here [Applause] elway has protection now he has to scramble heads for the end zone touchdown blitz coming has room to run pulls up and delivers the pass complete john elway with a tremendous play for 30 [Music] yards john elway he is the statue of david of quarterbacks he had the great arm strength john elway threw that ball a long way boy he did he just cocked the arm and let it go elway deep dropped the throw is gonna scramble runs right got a guy open throws it long the ball is gonna be caught by mike pritchard touchdown denver and the protection is there the pass to the end zone touchdown miller [Applause] elway firing to smith [Applause] goes with it what a throw what a catch fellow is in the shotgun he's looking that way steps up fires it along to the end zone touchdown anthony miller raiders coming after him again elway steps up he's going to the end zone and miller makes the catch for a touchdown second and one play fake no way looks to throw way downtown wide open touchdown anthony miller two-step drop steps away buys time ladder back edge yes emily is a magician look out look at him he can go deep double coverage is it caught six yeah elway makes it by buying all of that [Applause] [Applause] fake wants to go deep in the corner anthony miller does he have it and holds it yes he does touchdown [Applause] denver so it's first and goal delway throws the babe to mccaffrey third touchdown of the day for the former stanford receiver the second [Applause] elway will step up look for a play now twirls around still has the ball throws into the end zone it's going to be caught touchdown denver quiet day on the ground though for davis second down and once again in a crowd look where tally is look at that ball's thrown you got two linebackers in the safety and he puts that thing right between everybody [Applause] [Music] elway gets time going deep for rod smith he's out there he's got it touchdown tight ends in for the broncos everybody out throwing for the end zone the mccaffrey touchdown [Applause] no way goes deep shannon sharp picks it up double coverage it's to the end zone he is there with john elway he's in the shotgun they pressure away and fade into the corner and it is calm that's been true again today play action fate elway with time going for smith he's got it touchdown play action again by elwha can't find anybody now throws for the end zone touchdown qualcomm stadium awaits the denver broncos and the defending champion green bay packers brett favre the league's best player against the sentimental favorite john elway trying to undo those three previous super bowl experiences green bay has not allowed a touchdown pass [Applause] down inside the 35 almost offside but the packers got back on looking running inside the five-yard line for a first down is he only 37 how bad does john elway want to win this football game when you see that quarterbacks go down not elway it was just a reaction i didn't think about it and went over the top with my three-inch vertical jump the greatest eight-yard run in super bowl history by john elway on third down as far as anything that's ever happened in my life i'll remember when i saw that ball hit the ground and realized that we were finding a world champion there's only four words this one's for john as soon as you wouldn't want to people get a taste of what it's like to be a champion there's an insatiable drive to do it again everybody keeps congratulating me for coming back the thing is i never left [Applause] as time goes wide open i think john elway can play until he's 48. elway throws for the corner touchdown elway to throw on the run into the end zone touchdown elderweight in the throw for it has time down the sideline rock smith touchdown nice take by elway all day to throw mccaffrey jr doesn't blitz this time elway with all day to throw still can't find anybody still can't now to the end zone sharp touchdown [Music] and the denver broncos are going back to the super bowl they are afc champions for the second consecutive year that's ron smith on the move and elway drops and throws and has rod smith and smith breaks one tackle and heads down the sidelines denver's first play after the miss field goal elway going deep and he's got rod smith and smith's gone i think john elway this could be his last game but he could still gun that thing can he he looks like john elway that played 12 years ago second goal with the three elway quarterback draw close touchdown john elway on target to be the game's most valuable player and you know what that almost gives you a feeling that maybe this is his last game for the denver broncos that just may be the sort of champagne toast to an extraordinary nfl hall of fame career i really don't look at it as retirement i looked at it as graduation we all graduated from high school graduated college i'm just graduating with football i can't do it physically anymore and that's really hard for me to say the best quarterbacks ultimately find a way to win in the era in which i coached he was clearly the number one guy in that regard this guy will go down as the greatest player in national football league history
