several of you have been asking for an overall review of our 5075e we're gonna do that today let's get started okay before we get into the nuts and bolts of this review i want to give you a little history on this tractor we got this tractor i believe it was april or so of 2019. we got it from ahw it's a lease now we haven't had to pay the full lease payment well it was a huge amount ahw subsidized it significantly and we really appreciate that they did that as a part of a partnership for us to be able to show this equipment to you guys on youtube so that's the full transparency we renewed that lease i believe again in march and april of this year so we're in our second year now who knows what will happen next march or april but we'll see what happens then well i want to start off by saying this probably won't be a traditional review we're not going to go through just tons of different specifications we're not really going to be comparing to any other machine i don't have a lot of experience with other machines of this exact size direct competitors to this machine so it'd be hard for me to do that anyway rather what we're going to do is i'm going to talk about some things that i like about this tractor some things that i've experienced that i think are are really worthwhile features and we're going to talk about some things maybe that i think could maybe be improved a little bit or maybe they just don't fit my operation right so it's entirely possible that some of the things i'm saying may be really good for your operation maybe exactly what you need but they may just not be the greatest fit for me and vice versa you may find things that that i think are really incredible that you might not find useful at all so we're starting out here inside the cab and that's really my favorite part of the tractor the cab is quite spacious ouch the cab is quite spacious it's very quiet even though this is an entry level economy size tractor we just find the cab to be very very nice now our cab is equipped with a lot of options so some of the things i may show you may be options they may not be on the standard one and some of them well one in particular this buddy seat that i want to show you is not even an option on the 5e my dealer took it from the 5m or 5r i'm not sure which one and just made it fit on this 5e it works great it's a tight fit for someone for two adults to be in here at the same time it's a tight fit but it's still a great feature because having a buddy seat there's many times where you want to train someone or you want someone to ride just a couple minutes to see uh an example of what you're doing just many reasons why you might want a passenger for a little while and this one works really great now this machine is equipped with two doors i believe the right hand door is an option and i find that i don't use the right hand door very much mainly because of the joystick here is in the way it makes it hard to get in and out that way the other reason is the single point connector on the loader which i'll show you in a few minutes it gets in the way of the door opening and working well so that's that's a little bit of a challenge i still like having the door because oftentimes i open up that door to speak to someone you know i'll stop and and be able to open up and talk to someone overall this tractor by the way has 76 hours on it so we have some time in it obviously it's not not really worn out but it's uh you know we have enough time to have some experience in it from a transmission standpoint there are two options this one has the 12 12 power reverser that means there's 12 forward speeds 12 backward speeds you know this cat has not been very friendly to me for some time ever since i ran over him with the tractor but as of a couple of days ago our other cat mary disappeared and so i think martha here is kind of lonely he's kind of nuts today he's not been like this okay it's 12 forward speeds but it's not like numbered 1 through 12. there's a range shifter which is a b and c and then within each range there are four gears numbered one two three and four now if you want to try to shift while you're moving a little bit shifting between a b and c is is not easy right you'll grind the gears when you make that shifting if you're rolling at all but shifting one two three and four is synchronized such that you can shift from between any of those pretty easily you just clutch it and you can shift pretty easily that makes it very nice to to make a quick relatively quick at least change changing speed that you can't do within the ranges very well the ranges a one through four our first and slowest speeds b one through four are the middle speeds and c one through four are the fastest the tractor will go up to about 20 miles per hour in c4 it won't quite go slow enough for me using like the brush mulcher or some equipment that i want to just creep along with it it does not have a creeper transmission and i do not believe that is an option on this machine overall i'd like to see a hydrostatic transmission or a cvt or some sort of a transmission that i could go variable speed especially going really slowly on the other hand we do pull some heavier implements with this tractor the three bottom plow we have as well as the eight foot disc and for that i don't think a hydrostat transmission would be very good once you've selected the range and the gear that you want to use you have a couple of choices to actually make the tractor move you can just move this lever forward without the clutch and it will start to go forward if you put it back in neutral it will stop you pull it backwards it goes backwards you can also use the clutch okay if you use the clutch when this is in forward you don't move until you let out on the clutch that leads me to one thing that's not perfect on this machine or at least on my instance of this machine the clutch is just a bit jerky so as i gently let out on the clutch it doesn't smoothly start it it jumps my grandfather would have called it a fast clutch we had an old tractor a 504 international farm all tractor that had a fast clutch as he said and this feels the same way as you release the clutch it jerks just a little bit perhaps that's an adjustment issue if you know anything about that how to fix that let me know in the comments section okay another feature that i have used extensively is epto and that's a feature where you can set the pto to run faster than normal so that you actually run with your tractor not at high idle to be able to get the full 540 rpm probably not the best description ever but i hope you understand basically it allows you to run your throttle at a lower rpm and still achieve 540 rpm on the pto a lot of the attachments that we have don't require quite the full horsepower and so i can use that mode quite effectively mowing with that ts-10 for example is perfect with the epto feature speaking of mowing i think i could use a ts-12 or 12-foot mower i suspect a 15-foot mower would be too much for it but i'm pretty sure that i could handle a 12-foot with no issues this machine has some features of the really high-end machines the all the way up to the 8r for instance it's got places that you can have brackets built in so i've got a bracket here for my video monitor i've got some video cameras here from ag cam we got one up on the loader i have one in the cab and one pointed backwards i haven't shown these cameras in detail yet to kind of show you exactly how i use them but hopefully i can get to that at some point in the future meanwhile i just want you to see this bracket and this is a deer part that has a specific mounting here on the side of the cab and it you know it looks and works very well the hydraulic controls on this machine are mechanical so both of my hydraulic suvs as well as the three point have mechanical linkages to the actual controls this is much like the smaller tractors say the one two three and four series when you get to the 5m these become more electronic one of the advantages of the electronic feature is that it is able to isolate the cab from the rest of the tractor a little bit better so the cab on the 5m series for example is quieter than the 5e having said that i find the 5e to be incredibly quiet i mean i think it's rated at 78 db but it's you've heard some audio from other times when we've been inside the cab even at full throttle and you've been able to hear clearly it's it's very very nice the air conditioning system on this tractor has worked flawless for me it's it's uh kept it cool even in the hottest weather i had one time where i had to turn the fan up to the highest setting and that was when i had a guy even bigger than me sitting in a buddy seat and we were mowing and it was probably 95 degrees you probably saw that video we teased christy about being outside for that event i'm sure she probably didn't care for that i chose to have an air seat put in this cab this air seat is not even a deer air seat it's uh from grammar industries and my dealer put it in for me there's not an air seat option for this tractor but what we're finding is that because the cab is spacious enough and just overall built appropriately some of these higher end options can be made to fit if you want to get them standard features you'll have to go to the m or the r series but this is a nice way to be able to get certain high-end features and yet still maintain a relatively basic tractor if that's what you would choose to go with now as i was driving the machine this way i was reminded of one other oddity about the 1212 power reverser and that is that the reverse goes about 10 percent faster than the forward most of the time i would think i would like to go a little bit slower when i go in reverse than when i go forward that's just by moving the shuttle back and forth the reverse speed is slightly faster than the forward just thought i'd let you know now let's talk about this loader this is the 520m msl or mechanically self-leveling loader you can always tell a self-loving loader by this extra bar at the top and this extra triangle piece here this goes all the way back such that as the loader comes up the bucket or other attachment stays at the same position so if it's tilted back it'll stay tilted at the same angle if it's lean forward if it's level it'll stay level that works really great for using forks and overall it's a nice feature we're going to see some more of that with the one series coming up hopefully in just a few weeks as they've just announced a mechanical self-leveling loader for that tractor one of the other advantages of a self-leveling loader is additional lift capacity this loader is huge it will lift over 3000 pounds to full height and that's way up there i'm not exactly sure the total height but it's taller than i have needed to lift so far at ground level the bucket breakout force or boom breakout force is over four thousand pounds so in theory you can get over four thousand pounds off the ground with this guy with forks and you know that's a that's a lot of weight a loader with such a high capacity is going to require a lot of weight on the rear end and such is the case here and and that presents a bit of an issue the three-point ballast if you have no other ballast on the tractor even with the cab version is over three thousand pounds i think three thousand eighty seven pounds is what they recommend for rear ballast on this tractor if you have other types of ballast axle ballast or what we've recently added rim guard to your tires that number drops a little bit but it's not linear so in other words adding a thousand pounds to your tractor's axle is not the same as adding a thousand pounds on the three-point hitch simply from the way the leverage is made so you can look at the loader specifications in the loader manual they have pages for each of the tractors that is supported with this particular loader and it tells you the ballast requirements for this one i believe it's 2400 pounds if you have 600 pounds on each of the axles so we we now have probably 750 pounds of rim guard on each tire in each tire and so we think that the 2000 pounds that we typically run on the back should be adequate now we're not carrying full loads but i can tell you that we have noticed extra light weight on the rear end of this tractor this is a hefty loader you can do a lot with this loader some folks say that it's too large of a loader for this tractor and it possibly could be the case but i like it that way because i like that it's left to the operator to decide how much i can carry rather than running the loader at its max capacity and clearly not using all of your tractors capacity so i like this large loader just beware it's it requires all of the tractor to do it now on some of the smaller e-series tractors like the three e-tractors the loader is difficult to remove not so on this machine with the 520m loader we have a very nicely attached quick attach loader it's a little bit different than the one series you do fold down a lever on either side here it's not hard to fold it down okay you fold that down you pull these pins here it's not difficult at all you can be out of it in two or three minutes i find that with this tractor i do want to take the loader off occasionally for instance i don't like mowing with this large of a tractor mowing with the loader on maybe if i'm using a smaller tractor i need the loader for ballast or i need the loader to help me kind of push down some of the weeds a little bit to get over them but with this large of a tractor i really like not having the loader on it same with in like if i'm pulling my plow or my disc i just assume not have the loader there it works fine with the loader and it adds some nice front ballast but you know taking the loader off gives me better visibility and i just like having that option along those lines the single point connector is really nice in addition to the four or five it looks like hydraulic lines we have here there's an electrical connection for the diverter there's a diverter on this machine not a true third function it's a diverter kit but it is controlled with a joystick and it is installed as a factory option so it's not standard but it's not a third party add-on either overall this loader is great to me pretty impressed with everything it can do and how easy it is to install and remove one more point on the loader i mentioned how you could go to the loader manual and it would go through specifications for ballast it also has the suggested sizes for the tires and i find this a little bit confusing because i wanted the r1 the ag tires for this tractor they only offer one size they offer the 16 928's for the rear and the 9.5 24s for the front i get a lot of comments from viewers and i feel similar myself that the 9524s are just not quite wide enough for what i want to do i just don't like a narrow ag tire i notice that in europe even for a smaller tractor they put wider ag tires on them in the loader manual the loader says you need 12 424s 12.4 r24s as the minimum for this loader and yet deer equips this tractor with 9.5 24s so a little bit of that issue of maybe the loader perhaps being a little bit big for the tractor but yeah i wish i had some wider front tires this machine has a category two three-point hitch until just this last summer this was the smallest john deere you could get with a category two three-point hitch that would have been the 50 45 i believe the the 5e series would have been the smallest you could get with a category 2. just this last summer they introduced the 4m hd they call it heavy duty which has a category 2 3-point hitch a category 2 is is nice because it allows you to connect to larger attachments but it's equally nice because with just a couple of bushings you can still connect to category 1 attachments so i can connect this to any of the attachments we use for johnny two without a problem now some of them i might pull in half if we got serious with them but there's a feature on this three-point hitch that i really like it's an optional feature it's not standard but this is so much improved to me to allow me to hook onto an attachment i can release that i have a lot of room so i don't have to be backed up to the attachment perfectly it also allows me to raise or lower that lever then once you get attached you back the tractor in and it will automatically latch like that the other feature i want to talk about on the rear end of this tractor are these push-pull connectors for the hydraulics i have a lot of trouble with the one and two series moving the outside sleeve back so that i can insert the hydraulic connector that's a difficult problem these push-pull connectors are a lot more expensive but they are much easier to work with you just push hard and the couplers indent and then come back on their own and same way when you get ready to pull your your hydraulic hose out you just you just pull it out and it comes out much easier than the smaller tractors so this is a big step up they don't look hardly any different but they really are now we're not going to take the time here to go through all the differences between the 5e the 5m and the 5r i i don't have all that knowledge in my head anyway but i do want to point out one thing that that i think is important that you should consider if you're considering a 5 series machine and that is the turning radius the turning radius on this 5e is worse is not as tight as it is on the 5m and then again there's another improvement on the 5r now i haven't tried to study to figure out engineering wise what is different but i'm guessing at least my theory is that the way the front axle is designed costs a lot more to be able to improve that turning radius on those higher end machines just to guess if you know more about that leave it in the comments section happy to hear it but that's something you should consider because you can take one of these machines like we've done here a 5e and add a lot of upgrades to it and make it similar to a 5m in creature comforts but you can't improve things like the turning radius right so you you have to make that decision as to whether you want to start with an e and m or an r and add what options you need to add to make it work for you now if you're looking for a tractor in the 60 to 80 horsepower range you have a lot of choices and there's a lot of differences in each of those choices in the deer lineup so i think it's very good for you to take some time and drill down and try to understand what you need specifically before you choose one of these tractors i would not recommend looking at price alone for example this tractor or at least the 50 65 maybe even the 5075 here is probably less expensive than the 4066r so you might look at that and say hey i'm getting more horsepower for less money yeah you would be but it may not be the horsepower you need horsepower is not everything on a machine for example if you're doing loader work only not necessarily crazy heavy loader work but some pretty decent loader work a 4m or 4r tractor might be just what you need you can get that hydrostatic transmission at least in the 4r i believe you can on the 4m as well and the hydrostatic is going to make it much easier for you to to handle a loader right you can go forward and backwards any speed you want very very quickly and very efficiently if you're doing more ground engaging work like plowing disking cultivation work maybe a really heavy box blade you might find the gear transmission to be more appropriate for you and then you would need to go to the 5 series there are a couple of transmission options in the 5e series but both of those are still gear drive there is no variable speed transmission no cvt no hydrostatic transmission option available that's the biggest part of the cutoff now there's one other difference that you should consider as we talked about earlier and that's the cab the cab on the 5e is nice and big and spacious very quiet on the 4 series it's the same as the cab on the 3 series same exact cab so it's pretty tight it's still quiet but it's pretty tight if you want to have a buddy along with you if you want to just have that more spacious feel for me there's a lot more legroom in the 5e that's another reason to maybe consider this these decisions are tough don't just look at horsepower i just beg you not just to look at horsepower you need to look at the drivetrains of these tractors you need to see if does it have the right transmission for you does it have a turning radius that you're pleased with can it have the lift capacity that you're looking for can you handle the rear ballast requirements you've got to think through all of these items when you're looking at a new tractor i hope this has been helpful obviously we haven't covered everything if you've got more questions leave them in the comments below if if you can think of some more things we should cover in a video like this with the 5e tractor we'd be happy to do it we'll have this tractor for at least another nine months or so who knows after that just let us know in the comments your feedback is always appreciated well sometimes i get a little grumpy about it but i don't mean that anyway i hope you've enjoyed this thanks for watching everybody we'll see you next time on tractor time with tim [Music] yes he's he just wants you to pet him he just wants to be messed with today i'm just not used to seeing him like this yeah he's been different yesterday when he was meowing you could almost hear it like where is she where is he yeah you don't have anybody anymore do you
