Jimmy Evans – Exposing The Enemy – Exposing Satan

again this weekend I want to welcome all of our campuses and services we are so glad that you're joining us this weekend and I know a lot of you have been gone a July 4th for the holidays it's good to have you back but I'm going to continue the series that I've been doing called exposing the enemy if you have your Bibles there you can turn to first Peter in the New Testament a chapter 5 and this this series exposing the enemy we're going to talk about five names and titles of the devil and how we can overcome him and I want to say again this is not a devil glorifying series of messages this is a God glorifying series of messages and last week we talked about Lucifer and how we overcome him with worship he attacks us with pride the devil does he fell because of his pride but we overcome him through worship we're going to talk about another dimension of the devil today but I also want to remind you of something I said last week and that is this I was praying about this time last year and I was just praying about what the Lord wanted me to preach and it was about probably a 10 second period of time it didn't take very long but the Lord just in my heart he just parted the spirit realm and I could see into the realm of the supernatural and the demonic in the angelic and what I could see was Christians being just slaughtered by the devil just him attacking in marriages and families and people and minds and bodies just being attacked and defeated and the Lord said to me teach my people how to overcome the enemy let me tell you something God has given us authority over the devil somebody needs to say Amen we are not helpless we don't have to fear the devil but we certainly need to understand him so last week was called exposing Lucifer this week is called exposing Satan so every every name and title that the devil has their meaningful and the word Satan means adversary or opponent he is our adversary so I want to again remind you of something I said last week and that is according to Barna research 60 percent of Christians do not believe in the devil in spite of what the word and the devil loves them because you know adept an enemy that you don't believe in can easily destroy you and so the Bible if there's no devil why does the Bible have so much to say about him and the reason that the Bible tells us so much about the devil is so we can overcome him so we can understand him so this is 1st Peter 5 where I ask you to turn there listen to what it says about the devil first say be sober be vigilant because your adversary the devil walks around about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour now I want to stop right here and say may means permission it doesn't say whom he can devour that's ability he's not looking for someone who has the ability to overcome or to destroy he's looking for someone to give him permission he's prowling around seeking someone who will give him permission to destroy them resist him steadfast in the faith knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your Brotherhood in the world now this is Ephesians chapter 6 and I'll read this again later in the message but again this is the Apostle Paul finally my brethren be strong in the Lord in the power of his might for we do not put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against principalities against powers against the rulers of the darkness of this age against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places taking therefore therefore take up the whole armour of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and to have having done all the standard he's using now the symbolism of a Roman soldier against an enemy and he's saying put on all the armor because you're wrestling against demonic spirits against powers and principalities in the heavenly places it could not be clearer in the scriptures this is Luke chapter 10 then the seventy returned with joy saying Lord even the demons are subject to us in your name and he said to them I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven behold I give you authority to trample on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the what's that word enemy Jesus calls him a ninny he calls him Satan by name and then he says I'm giving you authority over all the power of your enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt you listen if you use the authority that God gave you nothing shall by any means hurt you what if you don't use the authority you're going to get hurt God has given us total authority over the devil nevertheless do not rejoice in this that the spirits are subject to you but rather rejoice that your names written in heaven now this is Zechariah chapter 3 and I wanted to read this because it's in the Old Testament then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord the angel of the Lord in the Old Testament is Jesus it's Jesus pre-incarnate it's the angel of the Lord and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him Satan means opponent or adversary and the Lord said to Satan the Lord rebuke you Satan the Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you is this not a brand plucked from the fire so we all have an enemy in the devil and we all have authority over him if we simply learn how to do with the Bible says that we can do so in this message and talking about exposing Satan I want to ask and answer three questions so that we can come to understand this issue number question number one is why is the devil our enemy why would why would the devil pick on us you know as sweet as we are I'm very sweet I don't know about you I'm super sweet everybody knows it number two question why can the devil defeat some people and others he can that's a question I mean why can he just lay waste to some people and other people he can't defeat number three how do we protect ourselves and our families against a those are three good questions so we're going to ask and answer those three questions let's begin with this one why is the devil our enemy why is he our adversary here's the answer Satan is the enemy of truth and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the way the truth the life in the eternal word of God and he hastened let me say this if you're not walking according to the Word of God he's not your adversary if he's just your master jesus said he who sins is the slave of sin and he's not talking there about you know all of us who fall short of the glory of God and we make mistakes it's walking in sin unrepentantly that's what he's talking about there Jesus said whoever commits sin is the slave of sin so if you're walking in lives and in deception you know like all of us did before we were saved he's not your adversary he's your master though but when you come to Jesus when you give your life to the Lord Satan becomes your adversary here's what here's what Jesus said to the Apostle Paul in acts 26 the Apostle Paul is telling us what happened on the Damascus Road when Jesus met him and he got saved and here is what Paul says Jesus is talking to Paul I will deliver you from the Jewish people as well as from the Gentiles to whom I now send you to open their eyes in order to turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in me so Jesus says to Paul here Paul I'm going to put a calling on your life and I'm sending you to the Jews and also to the Gentiles and I want you to turn them from darkness to the light you know what the light is it's this word right here I'll tell you just a minute I'll show you the Bible just man this is like about the devil is full of lies and deception and the Apostle Jesus said to the Apostle Paul I want you to turn people to the light and in doing so you will take them from the Dominion of the devil to my Dominion from the power of Satan to the power of God listen you're under the Dominion of the person whose advice you're following and when you're walking in lies you're under Satan's Dominion let me say this when you're saved by the blood of Jesus you're going to have the devil can't do anything about that but even saved people can walk in bondage even saved people that's the way I was I'll pay more about it in just a minute but I'm saying as a young believer I walked into section so when we get saved and and we commit ourselves to the truth of God's Word the battle isn't over really it has just begun because at the point of time that we commit ourselves to the truth that's really when he becomes our adversary let me say this as a young believer sometimes it can seem as though being a Christian is harder than being an unbeliever admit sorry is that true you get saved and you love Jesus and when I was lost I was very immoral I was very rebellious I was very empty on the inside the reason I turned to Jesus is because sin lied to me I was a good center I was extremely good at it I woke up every day with a goal to sin and I went to bed successful and empty and unhappy and the reason I turned to Jesus is because sin lied to me and when I looked let Jesus come into my life he filled my heart and Jesus has never lied to me in my life has been full for the last 44 years of serving Jesus Christ but I got saved and I was so naive I didn't know anything about the devil I didn't know anything about you know living for God and things like that and just immediately I could feel the opposition the opposition of doing the right thing the opposition of living for God I had no idea it would be like that someone read you a scripture here and I want you to see here Jesus is talking to the Pharisees and Jesus came and he says if you abide in my word you're my disciples indeed and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free it was extremely offensive to the Pharisees to hear that because they said to Jesus we're sons of Abraham and we have never been in bondage here's what Jesus said to him this is John a why do you not understand my speech because you're just you're not able to listen to my word you are of your father the devil did Jesus was hidden mince words did it you were of your father the devil and the desires of your father you want to do he was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him you know why if the devil would just read this book he would understand he's about to get it you know why can't read this book he cannot accept it peek under sentence that's why we have such an advantage over him when he speaks a lie he speaks from his own resources for he is a liar and the father of it but because I tell the truth you do not believe me which of you convicts me of sin and if I tell you the truth why don't you believe me he who is of God hears God's words therefore you do not hear because you're not of God so Jesus is preaching this message and all of a sudden the Pharisees start coming at him and opposing him he says ha you actually just like your daddy he opposes the truth just like you he is the opponent because there's no truth in him when he speaks a lie he's speaking out of his own nature because he's a liar and the father of it listen to me when you're living for the truth the devil is your adversary because he hates the truth and you say well maybe I shouldn't live for the truth no no when you're living a liar and bondage or you live a miserable life may actually second question because this is very important why can the devil devour some people and he can others and the answer to that some people were protected by the word and others aren't listen some people are saved but they're not safe faith in Jesus and his blood makes us saved faith in God's Word makes us safe and we need to understand that the Word of God Satan opposes us because we believe in the Word of God and because we're committed to the Word of God well how do you overcome it up through the Word of God so let me give you several examples here this is Matthew chapter 7 this is verse 24 therefore whoever hears these sayings of mine and does them well and does them not people who hear them but people who do them I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock and the rain descended the floods came to blew and beat on that house and it did not fall for it was founded on the rock but everyone who hears these sayings of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand and the rain descended the floods came and the winds blew and beat on that house and it fell and great was its fall well let me this is a little foundation here that the crew kind of helped me with so let me just say this is the Word of God let me just say that I'm going to build a marriage and I'm going to build a family and I'm going to build a career and I'm going to build finances and resources I'm going to build my life my future my destiny I'm a bill because you're building you're building something and you're building it based on some information your family heritage what somebody told you to do what you saw on TV what you read the book you're building your life based on some information but listen there's no promise that you're going to succeed apart from God's Word Jesus said a person who hears my words and does them is like a wise builder that built their house upon the rock you say well that was let me sub you'll admit and say why would a person choose the sand over the rock three reasons we just got back from California took our family out there for vacation we went to the beach great why do people go to the beach versus we didn't see anybody laying on the rocks by the way so why would a person choose sand over rocks number one is popular number two it's comfortable number three it's conformable you lay in the sand you get up it looks like you however unflattering that might be if everybody wants you to custom Jesus I just want to mat it want to count choose my own beliefs is choosing the Bible what I want bro away what I don't want I want a conformable Christianity well that's unfortunate see the problem with saying is it's unstable it may be comfortable it may be conformable it may be popular but it's unstable you can't rely on it in the bad times and if there were not going to be any bad times built wherever you want to build who cares but they're going to be bad times the wind will come the rain will blow on every single human being and God has never promised us a life without adversity he just promised us that we will be victorious he believed build on his word [Applause] [Music] let me talk about several areas for this minute let me talk about marriage well Karen I got married I met the preacher emeritus on the day that he married this I had no the only pre marriage counseling that I got was from my friends they said Evans you're making a mistake that was the totality of my pre marriage counseling I got saved a week before we got married I didn't know one scripture in the Bible the way I got saved by the way is Karen told me she wouldn't marry me because I was sore tomorrow and I gotta say not because of Karen but because sin lied to me and I gotta say we failed in marriage after several years of marriage we were on the brink of divorce see a lot of people spend tens of thousands of dollars on a wedding but they never planned for the marriage one of our photographers who works with marriage today he does wedding photos and he said increasingly when he delivers the wedding photos the couples are already divorced I don't care if he get married on the Eiffel Tower with a thousand doves being released in a chorus of children singing you're going to fail if you don't put this under your marriage Kennon almost divorced on the night that I told Karen to get out of the house I win the living room and I said Holy Spirit teach me to be a husband according to John 16 she said he'll lead you into all truth and I woke up the next day and I repented to Karen I woke up the next day and the Lord began to teach me his word watch I teach people all over the world today in the first place he took me was to Genesis to the four foundational laws of marriage my book is called marriage on the rock because this is the rock Jesus is the rock his word is the wrong we've been married for 44 years and we've been through everything like many of you have and the reason that we're standing today is not because we're smarter or better than any other persons because the Word of God is the foundation for a marriage what is the foundation for your marriage is it what you see on TV is that your mom and dad god bless your mom and dad I'm saying where did you get the information that you're basing your marriage off of I'm you're saying if your marriage is not based on the Word of God it's not going to last and even if it does survive the devil is going to do a tremendous amount of damage to you because it's not based on the word but when you build your marriage on the Word of God it's going to stand the test of time let me talk about children for this minute parenting proverbs 22:6 says to train your children up in the ways of the Lord and when they get old they won't depart from it okay well so let me let me say this I know you want your children to be popular but there's no promise in the Bible about your children being popular I know you want your children to be well educated that's great we all want our children to be well educated you go to high school to go to college to learn a career let me listen to me mom and dad your children to go can go to college and be well educated and be miserable and failures but Psalm 1 says if you live your life by the Word of God you will prosper in every single thing that you did we are commanded as parents to raise our children according to the Word of God we as parents doesn't mean being legalistic someone asked you one time they said is do you have family devotions they we were young parents at the time about maybe 40 or 35 and they say do you have family devotions and we sit down because every moments a teachable moment with children grandchildren and I'm kind of the end-times guy now I wasn't before I did that tipping point series now I'm finding in time you got so all my grandchildren asked me about the end times Pepi what about this factor what about this what about this what did they just wear me out and I loved every minute of it I loved teaching my grandchildren the Word of God the Word of God must be the foundation for our parenting I knew some people one time that they're Christians and they didn't raise their children based on the Bible they raised their children based on a popular psychiatrist book and they went and bought that book and they raised their children based on that not the Bible the unfortunate thing was about 20 years later the children of that psychiatrist came out and said he's a fraud he's the worst father in the world and he doesn't do anything he says his books and he was discredited unfortunately they had raised their children based on core information what the world believes changes and what the world believes is shifting sand this is the Eternal Word of God raise your children based on this what is the foundation of your children what do you make your how do you make your decisions by what's going to make them rich what's going to make them popular or what's going to make them bless this is what God blesses not being legalistic I want my children to be popular I want my children to be well-educated but I'm saying the most important thing is the Word of God I talk about money for this to minute God wants you to prosper proverbs 10 says the blessing of the Lord makes one rich and he has no sorrow with it you don't lose your health you don't lose your reputation you don't lose your marriage God God wants you to prosper God wants to bless you the richest man in the history of the world wrote a book called the book of Proverbs Solomon was the richest man in the history of the world he could buy and sell Bill Gates and all those guys ten times over he was filthy rich and he wrote every secret of his wealth in the book of Proverbs right there for us to read when pastor Robert teaches the blessed life you know what he's doing he's trying to put a foundation of the God's Word under our finances ken and I were we were we were in poverty our first house was a government house she had to be broke to qualify we qualified like in ten minutes our house payment was 106 dollars a month and we were broke and I have a poverty mentality and one day we went to church and the preacher preached on giving and Karen wanted to get $40 to the church I just thought oh Jesus Jesus I married a nut help me Jesus and she said can I get $40 to the church I thought by saying no God will strike me that if I say yes for going broke I said yes God began to do miracles in our finances and it was just a matter of giving was a matter of searching and we began to manage her money according to God's Word and we prayed about every important financial decision until we heard from God and hurt him together in 44 years later I look back and I say if it were not for the foundation of God's Word under our finances I think I'd be broke today I don't know where I'd be I think I'd be in poverty probably the Word of God is our foundation were saved because of the blood of Jesus were safe because of his word he who hears these things of mine and does them will be like a wise person who built their house on the rock and the rains came and the winds blew and beat against that house and it did not fall because it was based on the rock I say to you that the devil may not devour you if you live your life based on the Word of God that's what the Bible teaches let me say it something else about the word it's our sword it's our foundation Ephesians 6 take up the whole armour of God that you may be able to stand in the evil day and having done all the stands stand therefore having girded your waist with truth having put on the breastplate of righteousness having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace above all taking the shield of faith with which you'll be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one and taking the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God the only offensive weapon mentioned here is the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God everything else is defensive this is Hebrews 4 let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest lest anyone fall according the same example of disobedience for the word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword piercing even to the division of soul and spirit of joints and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart and there is no creature hidden from his sight but all things are naked and open to the eyes of him unless we give an account so let me have my sword here so I've got a bad boy sword here oh yeah oh yeah this is a Braveheart sword here so Jesus was in the wilderness for forty days didn't he imagine how you would feel forty days without even he was emaciated skin and bones and at the end of 40 days he was attacked by the devil himself and the devil of the devil himself came and attacked Jesus with lies and half-truths and Jesus himself defeated the devil himself after forty days without eating with no energy in his body it is written it is written is written a four-year-old that quotes the Bible is as powerful as any preacher on earth because the power isn't in us it's in God's Word a man who has no energy in his body after forty days of fasting can quote the Word of God and vanquish the devil because the word doesn't need our help it has its own power this is the sort of the spirit its living it's active you read other books the Bible read you and it says no creature can hide from its sight because when the Bible comes in you it's going to find every demon in hell that's trying to destroy your life it's going to defeat the devil this is powerful this is powerful and see what the devil before the devil defeat you has disarmed you he wants this to be in a drawer somewhere he wants this to be on the - here of your car on the your coffee table at home or something like that he just wants you to have a casual relationship with this because once he's taking this away from you you're easy pickings and when I talk about a two-edged sword I'm talking about the way we talk the way we speak the devil loves people who are negative who are doubtful her gossipy who are liars their mouths as impure they're vulgar he loves that because that's darkness and that's his domain and he can defeat it very easily he wants to sit around talking about our problems and how defeated we are and how bad things are and about all these things that are bad going on on my lumbago back oh Jesus God wants us to declare the word over every issue in our lives God wants us to pull the word out and not be not being you know holy jozin legalistic but for our words of our mouth to line up with a word of God and when the devil comes and tells us you need to kill yourself there's no reason for your life we need to tell him I'm the righteousness of God in Christ God has given me a future in a hope that's what his plan is for me when he comes to condemn us for our sins we say there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus he fears this not my opinion not my words he fears this because it's nuclear in the spirit realm this is the greatest weapon on earth nothing can defeat it nothing can defeat it so when you're a believer and your life is being built on the foundation of God's Word and you've got the truth and your heart in your mouth this is what you better not come around me done one other thing let me have my flashlight here so this is psalms and let me read the psalm real quick your word is a lamp to my feet and a light unto my path verse 110 skipping forward the wicked have laid the snare for me yet I have not straight from your precepts the Word of God is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path this is defensive this is offensive this is preemptive we live in a world with an evil devil and he's laying snares for us he has a method he has a plan and surely as God has a plan for your life the devil has a plan for your life - and this exposes him your word is a lamp unto my feet alighted to my path the wicked have laid a trap for me but I'm going to walk according to your precepts when you're walking in the word of God this is what you look like in the spirit realm you may not be devoured your marriage may not be devoured you may be attacked but you're going to stand and you're going to overcome you may be attacked but you're going to be victorious because the devil cannot defeat this you're going to defeat him he's your adversary but you're going to defeat him ken and I were young and we were probably in our mid 20s or so and I was in business with my parents I was in the ministry yet and we the Lord had saved our marriage and our marriage was doing better but we had moved into a new house and new for us and we started fighting and you say what were you fighting about I don't know cameras just on my nerves I'm sure it was her fault and we're just like maybe the week or so we just been at each other for a week and I was well I I we were in church and I would I would be around these kind of Christians that would always talk about the enemy and it turned me off is a big turn-on well I you know I tell you what the enemy has been attacking me I ran out of gas on the way to work today I think I think the devil is a little bit too busy to deal with your gas tank that's just bad planning you know and they always talking about the ice I don't want to be one of those people I'm not going to be one of those people so we were fighting it so it was time to go to Life Group and Karen came other thing I was watching football or something she walked in and said hey as times go to life three of us I'm not going and she said let's go to life givers you know the reason I said no is I know what bother I knew it'd bother you no and I wanted to bother because she's on my nerves so she went slack group Amanda Keys over here somewhere Amanda Keyes parents were our life proof leaders most precious people on her command as one of our pastors and Carolyn for life group and she came back a few hours later and she walked in the living room and sat down and right in front of me and very seriously she said I need to tell you something I thought well she's going to repent thank God you know she went the life grip they're talking about submitting to your husband she got convicted this is it good jesus answered my prayers she said I need to tell you something I said what and she said Sarah was praying for us this week and she saw a lion's head in our living room roaring and it was trying to break us up and we're supposed to hold hands and pray and take authority over the devil I'd never done that for I thought people who did that we're weird when she said it and it was right and for the first time as a husband I took my wife's hand and we prayed and we said in the name of Jesus we bind you Satan sarah key her word was a light that exposed the trap the enemy was making for us trying to destroy our marriage the instant we prayed that prayer it was like somebody sprayed Lysol in our house and opened the drapes the entire atmosphere of our house of our home changed in an instant and I looked at Karen I thought why am i mad at you then I started chasing around the house i I'm not stupid you know well he's an adversary but I'll tell you one thing we have a foundation we have a sword and we have a lamp and when we use them were victorious three question I'm done the third question that we asked how do we protect ourselves and our families against Satan total commitment to the Word of God total commitment 2nd Thessalonians 2 let's read this I'm done the mystery of lawlessness is already at work only he who now restrains will do so till he's taken out of the way then the lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will consume with the breath of his mouth and destroy with the brightness of his coming the coming of the lawless one is according to the work of Satan with all power signs and lying wonders with all unrighteous deception among those who perish because they did not receive the love of the truth that they might be saved the word love there's the word agape agape means a total commitment regardless of how you feel or the circumstances they perish because they did not receive the love of the truth mark 8 38 jesus said whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation of him the Son of man also will be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his father with his holy angels we've got to be committed to this we've got to take this seriously for homes our families every area of our life building our lives upon this letting the words of our mouth conform to this making our decisions based on this and when we do we will easily overcome our opponent Saviour we will easily overcome him and live our lives in victory the way that God has intended I want you to bow your heads with new if you would I want you to consider is you have your head down there what is the foundation of your life what are you building on you don't have to be perfect we're saved by the grace of God none of us are perfect but even though we're saved by grace we're safe we obey God's Word when we put it as the foundation of our lives what we come to you today and we say we are committed to your word we're committed to following your written word and pursuing your spoken word and basing our lives and our decision-making and our marriages and our parenting and our finances and our priorities and our morals and our values basing it on that and we see a world around us that is not just rejecting your word but vigorously opposing it and we know that the devil is on the loose with all lying wonders and unrighteous deception the God we commit ourselves to your word afresh in a new we commit ourselves to your word and we pray that you'd forgive us wherever we have failed fill us with your Holy Spirit and give us a renewed love and passion for your word we thank you for that in Jesus name all God's people said
