there you go thank you Marcus thank you ladies and gentlemen welcome back everybody folks my first guest is the youngest female egot winner in history and host of the Jennifer Hudson show please welcome back to the Late Show Jennifer [Applause] [Applause] Hudson I think I can do [Music] hey hey hey I got to say before I don't I don't mention this with every guest but those are some really good-looking shoes you got there they got they got those can we got a shot of those Sho they got steel toes on them you look like you could punch a hole in drywall with those if you had to I don't want to do that but no no but they look you know just in a pinch you like it thank you so much you could be you could fight James Bond with those on oh okay I'll be ready list um lovely to see you again thank you for having me oh pleasure uh Mother's Day was uh two days ago here you are right SE a with your son David my Monk skin he is 14 years old 14 years old that's my baby baby is your baby is he taller than you at this point yes I've been trying to figure out when I was last able to carry him because at this point he's carrying me like he wanted to be super tall right and taller than me so he's now surpass my height and a size 14 shoot he's huge wow and everyone still thinks he's a baby and i' be like that man right there is my child that's little David ain't nothing little about him does he does he take after you like does he does he sing does he does he want to be a singer he's musical but he's at the age when he starts singing and I pull out the camera to tape him he's like what are you doing so I have to sneak and do it but let me tell you one Mother's Day when he was really little we was in love with the movie greatest showman and it was a song from the film that I really loved so he decided to sneak in with my MD and record himself singing it and gave it to me as a gift oh ain't that sweet y'all I would play it for you yes but I would get in trouble if I did that so what I did was I took it and I made it the bell of my house so when you ring the doorbell it's it's him singing how did that go over not good but anytime that Mama take it D don't do that well the last time we talked uh it was the first year of your talk show the Jennifer Hudson show wow and uh now uh you're you're coming to the end of season two four Daytime Emmy nominations congratulations on that that hearing that is crazy yeah that's lovely thank you that's lovely well you were saying at the time that you were getting you know like you're having to get used to new lingo like you know the grind of the everyday uh uh you know uh working off of prompters like this how how is have you all settled in now is it all natural second nature to you now still I mean you know I'm learning I'm still learning I'm finding you know my group because I started out singing first so now I'm finding my balance as a talk show host and I learn from the energy of the audience that lifts me up and things like that like right now I'm watching you and I'm learning from you and taking it all in you know it's a different type of I think it's a different type of connection like as a host than as a singer because if I hit a another like ah I know people gonna clap right clap right clap right but what's strange being a host is when you start talking people be like and I'm like shouldn't they be clapping people get quiet they want to so it took me a while to learn that I hear that you don't really like the cold and we for for examples that I I know from myself and the other talk show hosts that I know we really like our Studios really cold it keeps the audience uh crisp like a stick of celery is that why you know no because it keeps people awake too warm and people get sleepy and and like a cold weather I call it comedy weather cuz if you're if it's cold like you know you almost will laugh as like a self-defense mechanism it's like chattering your teeth just to try to warm yourself up how do you get around is your studio cold yes and and and I can't concentrate when I'm cold like even now I'm like oh my God it's so cold in here but what I requested is like my chair to be built with like a heating pad in it oh that sounds a smart answer yeah so they tried it but then they said I couldn't have it because it was a fire hazard so now I'm just stuck with a cup of tea and then I wear layers and layers of Co clothes to keep me warm do you I I keep a pasmina back here for people guests who get cold would you like a wrap or anything you got a blanket I got a I do I have a you do I have a blanket back here oh I'm feeling come on here I'm feeling real at home I need it right here right here right here right here on my legs I feel real at home now thank you so much young man the Lord is going to bless you in the mighty IIs back here like no I'm okay you got a little tea in this cup and then I got this blanket child I'm so good right now don't get sleepy don't don't KN off on me now this is amazing to me do you have any pre-show rituals things that you like because there are things that I have to do like there three or four things I have to do every show and then I feel like okay I'm ready to do the show well um the tunnel of Memories We No that's the tunnel memories at home but the spirit tunnel is what we have the spirit tunnel is that is that the clip that you got here you sent how did this come about before we show to the people well it's like okay I'm all about energy and lifting people up that's what the happy place represents at the show and so like the staff and the crew is so amazing it's team J Hood all day long I feel like they be out there rehearsing instead of like right up the next scene they be rehearsing they have dance moves and even when I get ready to come out they have like a cheer song a different song every day that peps me right up before I go out on the stage so we're about to see this cheer song but it changes every day every day even for the guests Jim we gonna hype you up 1 two [Music] [Applause] see that yeah you need one I know we're got to get one here but you got the ban though they be jamming okay I'm back they they do they be jamming yes now I want to go back to uh This Moment wow 20 years since you were eliminated from American Idol there you go when you look back at that moment what what were you thinking cuz that did that seem like the end because you did you had any idea that it was just the beginning of of so much success wow that was 20 years ago I was I was I was 22 I'm 42 now but actually in that moment that is what kept me going for a split second of course you're GNA get sad of course you're like I didn't win or this is the end of the rad for me here but it was really brief and a few seconds later I'm like I still have my talent I still have my gift and I still have the passion to do what I love to do so long as I keep singing and keep at that goal and that dream it has no choice but to give in because I do it for the love you know and because of that I've been blessed thank you to do so many things you know one of the nice things about the kind of success that you've achieved and I'm sure you've had a few Pinch Me moments like meeting people who were Heroes of yours or artists that you admired is anything leap out as like like the first time one of the Monty Python guys asked to meet me in event he goes Eric Idol wanted to meet me and I thought there was a mistake how could it that be true have you ever had I'm sure you've had that experience yes and I've lived several moments like that on the show even like when the guests come in it's like oh my God this is such and such right but starting out in my career I remember it was right after the Dream Girls and I sang for event called carosella hope and I'm sitting in the hallway y'all and I'm waiting for the program to start and then all of a sudden it's like a army of men in suits walking by and I'm like you're like who are these people and in the midst of them is my idol the ultimate Whitney Houston y'all oh my God she literally stops this her of me and she say stop it is you you're the one and I'm like I could not move at all and my people are like get up get up it's what do you do it's Whitney Houston I can't move sure and that was that moment for me then one time y'all I got to sing with prince prince is wow Prince Right wow W I get to sing with Prince and he was performing in Chicago and I'm like you can't perform in my city and I not be a part of it he's like okay we're not going to rehearse we're going to come straight up on the lift I'mma hand you a mic and we gonna get to sinking that happens to me every day first of all like oh my God okay I'm just thr on the program but that time I put myself on program anyway so we come you got that we come up on the lift and we're singing on the stage and all of a sudden in the middle of song it hits me like I am singing with Prince and I start screaming in the middle of the song ah it's Prince so it comes and goes where it hits you you know what I mean yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah we have to take a
