as you're making your way to your seat be thinking of your coffee drink because i'm going to be asking you guys so denise what is your favorite coffee drink you were just telling me and i love it so okay so i don't drink coffee anymore i know this all comes from no caffeine right okay um so but anyhow i do this this natural drink thing that is totally approved by my naturopath and it is i take whole fat coconut milk and i put some in a little bottle and or in a little jar and heat it up while i start making the rest of the drink and that is a honking scoop full of cacao a little bit of himalayan pink salt some cinnamon and some squirts of stevia caramel drops and a little bit of vanilla then i put it through my hot water maker and get some hot water in it i steam uh the coconut milk pour it into it and voila massive numerations oh my gosh yum i already want that i need that in my life it sounds like you need to help train our baristas today how about you guys any favorite drinks out here what cold brew anybody else what's your favorite coffee drink green tea latte more one more chai latte that's my favorite actually i love chai and i thought i heard a hot chocolate too hot chocolate straight black and last last service raul says anything any coffee all right well um just to reiterate we have launched our cafe today the lovely hannah is doing such a great job go over and show your support even if you don't drink coffee buy a coffee but there's tea there's a great job huh there's tea there too there's tea there's tea there's water i don't know what else there is but there's all good things and it's really really good coffee i got to try some of it the other day and they're doing awesome so um announcements team church rally is tonight yeah who's coming uh more hands so clear your schedule team church rallies tonight so it's at 6 pm and what this is is just prepping our volunteer teams and anyone who wants to join a volunteer team so that we can get ready for easter we really want to put on a really good a really what's the word i'm looking for an atmosphere where people can feel welcomed in our community we really want people to feel welcomed and that's the goal here so that people can encounter jesus amen amen amen all right so come tonight it's gonna be lots of fun there's gonna be trivia there's gonna be some worship there's gonna be um a little breakdown of what all the ministries are doing it's gonna be great you don't wanna miss out it's gonna be so much fun right and then the first sunday of april is easter sunday and one of the things i love to say is he is risen and the next person said he is risen indeed amen and hallelujah okay well i just added that last part but anyhow um we have a sunrise service at 6 30 a.m now cute little story is i never grew up with the sunrise service so the very first time i went as an adult my children and i dressed up in our little sunday best little little dress and oh my gosh i did not realize it was outside and i was assay freo it was freezing so bring your parka wear your sweats put blankies around your legs be prepared and don't do what i did and then of course we have our normal uh uh sunday services uh for easter on at nine and 11 a.m and of course for you guys online too yes yep yep and um last but not least we have some volunteer opportunities for everybody so we want to highlight our camera team i know we've been hitting this really hard recently but really we have so many people who get the benefit of watching this online if they're not able to be here in person or they just live really far away and the way that we can serve is by manning one of these cameras so if you feel god tugging on your heart come tonight that's what tonight's all about is getting people involved so that we can serve one of the best ways to grow is to serve amen amen amen all right and we need greeters and ushers and i like to call them pps patio peeps so they're out there in the patio out in the uh the parking lot and if you're afraid of oh i'm afraid of someone coming up to ask me a question that i don't know how to answer they're we're going to teach you all the things that where to direct people but you know what there's a lot of us that you just reach out and say oh you know what i know someone that will help you and just bring them along so we got your back it's fun by telling you about some of our big three events that we have coming up at the end of this month the first on march 21st is our bring a friend sunday so make sure to go out and invite all your friends to be here we're going to have a fantastic time here at church full of fun and learning about god's word you and your friends do not want to miss out so make it a priority put it on your calendar and we will see you here it's easter it's the easter season yay this is so exciting because we actually have a few things going on but first march 28th is for the kids it is 9 00 or 11 a.m service or both is going to be our easter extravaganza egg hunt for all the kids so bring your kids your grandkids your neighborhood kids your nieces nephews anybody you want to just gather along and bring them on in we're going to have a good time and if you don't have any kids anymore which is sort of kind of me if you don't have any grad kids totally need i'm gonna go buy about five or six bags of candy drop them off at the church you can do that during the week tuesday through friday or just on sunday mornings they'll take it it gives the team a time to plan and prepare for all the kids that are going to be here for the eastern extravaganza don't miss it march 28th also one of our most special services that we have during this easter time is our seder service this is a service that is led by our very own eleanor specter as she walks us through the traditional passover in the jewish tradition so we really encourage that all of you come out to this event this year it is rsvp only new families joining our church every week we've added new families over this last couple of months and we're super excited about that and and if you're new we want to welcome you to the family if this is your first time here to our church today we want to just let you know that you're welcome here and we're glad that you're here and that you're with us um the coffee shop has been closed for a year we had to close down a year ago um when we stopped having services um remember they said we just celebrated the one year anniversary of our two-week shutdown so um yeah but that's what we're so excited about the coffee shop reopening and uh hannah and her team they're hannah's only about a year old to our church her parents were here this morning as well as some friends and uh i just want to encourage you to just dive in and grab a coffee today it's a grand opening go encourage hannah thank her for taking the step they've redone the entire coffee shop they bought all new everything and we have switched over to a new coffee called valiant and so we're super excited about that and just go give her a high five when you leave even if you don't drink coffee go buy a coffee and just you know tell them to pay it forward to somebody or something like that but i just want to say that and then i also want to thank and welcome to our church uh uh jason's parents um john and john is playing drums today up here he played drum last week too and um sandy's over there somewhere i can't see oh there you are sandy and um jessica right jessica that's jason's sister and um we love you guys we're so glad that you're here and you switched sides on me last week you said on this side so anyway we're glad that you're here and i just hope that you feel welcome here to the church as well so hey no one like him if you haven't met jesus yet i can't wait for you to do that because you're going to like him a lot jesus says everything that he declares that he is about himself in the word of god and much much more it's going to take all of eternity to really know him boy ever better that i know him i the more that i know him the more i love him and i know that's true for you too so i'm so glad that you're with us today and have a word on my heart to share with you that i believe is right from the holy spirit that will help us right where we are right now right where we're living right now so i want you to join me in a leaning into what the holy spirit would have for us today and not just have a goal of listening well but to put it into practice the bible says don't just be forgetful hearers but be doers of the word of god so our intent today is not just to spend some time giving you knowledge our intent today is to equip you to do what god has called you to do and we do that best from the word of god how that helps us know the battle that we're in how it helps us to know what the truth really is versus the lies that are so easy for us to to be tripped up by so we're going to do that would you join me father we come before you right now and ask you to open our ears to hear what the spirit is saying to the church today you've told us lord that you would give us those kinds of ears and so we're asking father that we can put into practice what we hear today spirit in a way that would make sense to us all help us understand what our opportunity is today what you have for us because lord we we don't want to just be puffed up with knowledge we want to be people who are learning how to put into practice what you equip us to do lord we thank you for your word we're so grateful for the word so grateful for the truth lord that helps us understand what is really going on and we give you praise ahead of time for all that you're going to do in us this week in jesus name we pray amen and amen welcome to all of you welcome to our friends online we're so glad to have you with us here today from wherever it is that you're watching uh oklahoma montana washington state oregon uh california across the globe we're happy to to have you join us today and i want to start by just making a statement to you that i believe is really true you're being lied to don't you hate that have you ever met anybody that said i don't mind so much when people lie to me uh most of us would say that's just one of those hot button issues for me when i get lied to i just see red it's just tough when i realized somebody that that you know would would do me that way they would it would they would lie to my face instead of you know they knew stuff they didn't share that i needed to know and i just don't like being deceived like that i don't think we're unique in in in that expression of emotion when that occurs because the lord has fashioned us for better than that the lord is fashioned us to live in the truth all the time and knowing that truth would make us free so we can have a free life from the things that would weigh us down but still it remains that you're being lied to and you're being lied to every moment of every day and the reason i say that is you have an enemy who has been on your destruction jesus said about the devil that he is he has come to kill and to steal and to destroy he's bent on your destruction he's been on accusing you of things to holding you two things that god would never hold you to and he's decided that he's going to continue to pound you with information that while it's not true is very convincing if you're not aware of what it is that he's doing now jesus said of the devil with his own words that he was the father of lies he's constantly whispering in your ears on truth designed to keep you in bondage rather than live in freedom look what he said in john 8 and 44 john 8 and 44 it says this the devil was a murderer from the beginning he's never been truthful he doesn't know what the truth is whatever he tells is a lie by definition he's doing what comes naturally to him he's a liar and the father of lies now why would jesus talk about that if that weren't true jesus is is choosing his words very carefully here and he's he's trying to bring us into an understanding that one of the greatest lies that the enemy has told you is that he doesn't exist at all and that's just for naive people or or people that haven't become aware but jesus is telling you the truth that though you can't see him with your physical eyes you do have an enemy who is going to be constantly whispering in your ear trying to get you to believe what he's what he's telling you trying to buy what he's selling and you don't want to do that because if you give in to what it is that he's saying to you you're going to find yourself paralyzed in fear and anxiety and discouragement and he's been doing this to people as long as they've been on the planet we're going to look today at a very familiar passage of scripture uh that talks about the story of david and goliath a lot of people have never read the bible i've heard parts of this story at least about david and goliath and we teach it to our children in sunday school as we should because it's got important truths in it but i want to take a run at it a little bit different than maybe the way you've heard it before because often when this uh passage is shared and discussed uh we kind of cast ourselves in the role of david the you know the kind of unassuming warrior that's big enough to take down the giant uh through what he what he trusted god to do and there's truth in that but i want us to see a little bit differently today i want you to see yourself in the role of king saul and of the warriors who found themselves unable to do what they were trained to do which was to fight the war the bible says that god will train your hands for war and yet they found themselves paralyzed by an enemy who was rigging the contest and i want you to see yourself in that role for just a minute because i think there are things that you're facing that feel too big for you that that you really believe like honestly if i could just be honest i'm not going to overcome this thing this thing's got me and i'm just not going to find a way around it if you if you're going to identify with that even a little bit this will help you today and how we're going to approach this because i believe that that if we recognize that we need a champion to fight for us it will help us to understand what it is that we're under in just a moment we'll get to that story but i want you to first start with what jesus said about himself he said that he was the way the truth and the life and that we would know the truth that could set us free when we did something look at his words in john 8 31 jesus said to the jews who believed in him if you continue to obey my teachings you are truly my followers then you will know the truth and the truth will make you free now we normally quote that second verse of verse 32 there we quote that a lot you'll know the truth and truth will set you free but jesus puts a condition on that he's not saying that all human beings will live free although that's his will and his desire for all human beings he's not saying that just because of the goodness of god that we would find ourselves living free from the lies of the enemy what he's saying is that when you make the decision to let jesus lead you he says when you continue to obey my teaching and recognize that god's ways are better than your ways and if you just practically think about that for a minute isn't that true haven't you had lots of good ideas that didn't work out didn't you say sometimes and your behavior is what tells whether you believe that your ways are better than god's or god's voice are better than you because when you choose to do something that you know is wrong that you know isn't the way god would instruct you to do when you do that have you had that experience uh in life if you've lived on the planet more than five minutes you probably have were you where you would say something like this well it seemed like a good idea at the time right and and yet you realize this wasn't a good idea doing this was not smart i mean why did i fall for this once again i had an idea but it didn't work out you'll never say that about god's ideas you'll never say man i wish i hadn't done it god's way because when you do it god's way it always works out because he's sharing truth with you about the way the world works and so jesus is saying here that if you want to live free if you want to be free in your life you have to make a decision to continue in his teachings rather than stubbornly holding on to your ways now what people do today in my experience my own life the temptations of my own life is that we tend to kind of pick and choose there's certain things we totally agree with god and go oh absolutely you know that that that's always true i'll always trust god for that things like our salvation we can kind of figure out we're not going to make that happen on our own but there's other areas of our lives where we say i think i got a better idea god's ways seem outmoded they seem out of touch they seem not quite in step with the time we live in and so maybe god didn't really mean it when he said those things it's those areas that we find ourselves becoming captured by and the reason we do that is because we've got a liar who is lying about the validity of those other options you might have we're living in a time when we we use these phrases well that's your truth and this is my truth if you stop and think about how illogical that statement is truth is either truth or it isn't you can't have a truth that's different well my truth is there's no gravity well good luck with that because if i were to jump off the stage gravity would become a reality oh no problem we'll just build a rocket and we'll go that's fine until you run out of fuel right the the the the insanity of saying that there that you might have a truth that would be different than my truth i kind of get what people are trying to communicate but there there's a touch of the enemy lying to you to try to ensnare you with well good for you i'm glad that jesus thing's working for you i'm just not that i don't need that i'm not put together that way that's a lie from the enemy that is constantly trying to get you to think that thought over and over until it becomes an automatic reflex to where you just respond with that thinking pattern every time you think about jesus so jesus is saying there's a better way if you'll learn to follow him and let him teach you he says come to me all you that are heavy laden burdened worn down anxious fearful exhausted overwhelmed he said come to me when you feel like that he said and and i will teach you he said i'm gentle in the way that i go about things but i will teach you my ways and those ways are so much better than the way you're trying to go about it now let's go to the account of david and goliath now in first samuel chapter 17 and verse one and you're going to see set up here as we begin to read this together that the enemy is attempting to rig the contest here to ensure the failure of god's people and that's typical of the way the enemy works in your life he tries to get you to believe something that's mostly true but not completely true and if you can get you to buy into that he can keep you from knowing the truth that will set you free if he can get you to believe the lie then he can trap you into believing that lie so that you have no chance to escape the web of deceit that he's spinning around you constantly look in verse 1 first samuel 17. the philistines now mustered their army for battle and camped between soko and judah and azika and ephistalman saul encountered are countered by gathering his israeli troops near the valley of ilah so the philistines and israelites face each other in opposite hills and the valley between them if you join us on our israel trip when it gets rescheduled uh we'll take you to this place you'll see this but basically what you're seeing here is the geography was such that the these two armies were opposing each other and they had arrayed themselves on either slope of a of a valley that they were going to fight in and the way that they were just waiting for the signal and the way warfare would happen is uh one side would blow the shofar they'd blow the horn and say it's it's time to attack and then they would just go at it in the middle and they'd go at it until the last man was standing and that's the way war was done but the geography allowed them to stare each other down and it was kind of a game of chicken and to see who would who'd kind of flinch first you know they're just staring each other and these are all seasoned warriors on both sides uh it was uh probably a fairly evenly matched battle that's about to take place and otherwise saul wouldn't have allowed his army to gather in the first place and so here they're ready to do war and saul is the king and he's the leader and he said come on boys we're going to go fight and so they're all ready to do that on both sides and then i want you to see how the enemy tries to rig this contest in verse 4 then goliath a philistine champion from gath came out of the philistine ranks to face the forces of israel he was over nine feet tall so he got noticed at a time when most adult males were didn't top six feet or probably closer to five six five seven somewhere in there here's a nine footer and he wore a bronze helmet and his bronze coat of mail weighed 125 pounds and he also wore bronze leg armor uh and carried a bronze javelin on his shoulder and the shaft of his sphere was as heavy and as thick as a weaver's beam was huge and tipped with an iron spearhead that the spearhead alone weighed 15 pounds and his armor bearer walked ahead of him carrying a bronze shield as well that was big enough for a 9-footer and the shield bearer to both hide behind that's how their shields worked so imagine this guy coming down out of the ranks of the army in the light of the the morning light and just having that light hit all that bronze and just blinds you with its brilliance and just magnified even his already incredible stature of how big he was and how powerful he was he comes marching down out of the ranks and he and he has some terms he's going to lay out in front of the israelite army here in verse 8 it says goliath stood and shouted a taunt across the israelites why are you all coming out to fight he called i'm the philistine champion but you're only the servants of saul one of the things you're going to know about the enemy of your soul is he'll always taunt you he'll always belittle you he'll always try to make you smaller than you are in your own eyes he will always try to degrade you he will always try to run you down he will tell you things like what kind of christian are you to do that kind of thing who what kind of christian looks at that kind of stuff online what kind of christian thinks those thought what kind of christian uh is mean like you were just mean to that person all those things taunting you trying to draw you out on into a fight on your own on terms that you simply cannot win he said you're only the servants of saul choose one man to come down here and fight me and if he kills me then we'll be your slaves but if i kill him you will be our slaves i defy the armies of israel today send me a man who will fight me now look what goliath is doing here he's being led by the enemy and he's he's setting terms that are kind of like heads i win tails you lose he's setting up the contest where he can't lose and he's saying if on some freakish chance your champion beats me then we'll all lay down our arms and we'll become your slaves for the rest of our lives if you know this story you know that was an absolute lie there was no intent to keep the terms of the deal should they against all odds lose you'll see that as we go through this but he lays down terms that can't they can't possibly overwhelm and makes it like that's the way it's going to go down now i've always am amazed when i look at this story because i think okay you got these two armies that are separated across this valley they're staring each other down here comes this goliath and lays down terms that were not conventional were not the way that wars were fought and says this is what we're going to do because he knew there was nobody in israel that was a nine-footer and there was nobody that had the power that he had it was a done deal if israel was foolish enough to accept these terms and the enemy of your soul will come to you all the time and say here's the only way you're going to get free from this thing that is destroying you is you're going to have to really pay penance for a long time before god would even think about hearing your prayer you're never going to find yourself free from these things and then points out the obvious that you're too weak to be able to take this on the truth is in this instance there's no way saul could have won this war on those terms he had no one that could possibly compare with goliath not in the entire nation there was no way they could win and look at the results of that conclusion when saul does the math looks at what's down and thinks if that's the way this has got to be worn uh god this war has got to be fought then we have no chance in verse 11 it said when solomon israelites heard this they were terrified and deeply shaken and that's what happens to you and me when we believe the lie of the enemy because he will set up terms guaranteed to for you to fail he will tell you that you have to operate on his terms and here's the problem with that he's right the best lies are 90 truth but they're leaving out a really important 10 that changes everything see he comes accusing you of your sin and telling you that you can't win against that temptation this bad habit will always own you this depression this anxiety this fear this broken heart this betrayal this addiction it owns you and it'll always own you and there's no way out and he comes telling you that day in and day out because this got repeated day after day after day because saul couldn't accept the terms but he didn't see another way out and it's always surprised me because here's what hindsight would tell you to do okay boys listen to me now tomorrow morning when goliath comes out the way he always does and does that boastful thing when he gets out far enough from the rest of his army i want every archer to fill him like a pin cushion i want you to shoot every arrow you've got and i want everybody here to go down before the rest of the boys can join him i want us all to go in there and we'll just hack him to death and a lot of us may take it on the chin but we're going to take him down when he's isolated because what the enemy says is he sets it up to where it looks like he can't lose but look how foolish this was if they had just responded wisely they could have wiped out goliath all by themselves but they got locked into believing the lie that it had to go down the way goliath said it had to go down your champion against our champion and the enemy will always try to set terms for you that you cannot win you have probably tried to stop a bad habit on your own and you find yourself failing over and over and over and then the enemy whispers this is going to keep going this is the way it's going to be you're never beating this thing you're addicted and that there's no freedom for you you're going to to go down with this you can't keep your eyes off that stuff you're going to watch it for the rest of your life the enemy will keep pounding you with those lies till you start believing them and he'll tell you things that are just true enough but he leaves out this one important truth that 10 that changes everything that will actually reset the odds in your favor you have a champion to fight your battles for you and his name is jesus christ and he's promised to never leave you or forsake you so wherever the enemy ambushes you you have got a champion to fight for you in your place saul had a david he just didn't know it yet and david had been being prepared for this fight as he will detail in the story by saying look i watched my daddy's sheep and there were a lot of a lot of predators that came trying to kill those sheep lions and bears and tigers oh my and i killed every last one of them i was training on them for this big dude saul didn't know any of that all saul's looking at i can't win i can't win this term he's right he's right he's right how did he know we didn't have anybody to match him there's no way we don't have giants like they've got this isn't fair god why'd you make me king over a bunch of these wimps like this they're probably fighting each other and going in on where what's wrong with you guys how come you're not tough enough how come you're not big enough how come i got settled with the losing side you know all like that he did not even know he had a david all along and never knew it and you've got a champion whose name is jesus christ who will never leave you and never forsake you he's ready for a fight every moment of every day and he'll train you to get in and do your part as well he's there to fight for you and when you understand that that truth the truth replaces the lie and suddenly you realize yes it is a rigged contest it's just rigged in my favor i can't lose because i got jesus and jesus already beat this guy at the cross 2000 years ago he's a defeated foe and don't don't get it twisted here the enemy knows he got beat at the cross he just hopes you never find that out or if you do you think it's a fairy tale or you think it's true for everybody else except for you you think that other people jesus loves enough to do that for him but he'd never do it for you because of the horrible things you keep doing or because of how weak you are or whatever you think you're unique that way that somehow you're the exception to scripture jesus is faithful and just to forgive us from all unrighteousness except you it's not what it says it says all unright little big everything in between he's faithful he's able to defeat all of that stuff and if if we had the time in the organization i could put a parade together up here people would say if you only knew what my life looked like before i met jesus christ i was a mess i was addicted to stuff i was violent i was evil i was vile i was a horrible person and i there was no way i was ever changing that until jesus christ got a hold of me and i am completely different i haven't arrived i'm not perfect but i'm telling you my life is a completely different life than the one i was fashioning for myself we could parade people across this stage many of who are right here in this room today are watching us online that would say yep that's my story man i was making a mess of my life uh is that your i i hate to think who i would be today without jesus christ i know what's in me guys and it's not all good i mean it's like oh man i i would just have destroyed my life by now if i'd even survived this long without jesus christ jesus has rescued me and he hasn't abandoned me either he's still here so whatever the enemy has bring it on because my champion's gonna fight for me and you've already been defeated why would i listen to you one more nanosecond when the truth the way in the life we had a friend this morning we were talking before the first service started and he said i had the strangest stream last night i said i dreamt that jesus christ was in a coffin dead and i said all that means is the enemy's getting real worried about you because we know the truth here's what you do here's a new picture look at that cross right over there we don't have a jesus hanging on it because he already came off that cross you just point that picture to him and go dude you must be afraid easter's coming enemy you must be afraid we're going to believe this stuff because there's no dead jesus and no coffin with his eyes shut he's already risen from the dead but he desperately wants to paint pictures for you that say yeah for most people but not for you you're a special kind of bad oh no we're not that unique the bible says there's nothing new under the sun there's nothing bad you've done that somebody else hasn't already figured out how to do worse than you that doesn't mean he wants you to keep being captive to that but it does mean that the enemy's defeated and you need to get used to regularly reminding him stop with that nonsense you're the one that's beat here yes it's a rigged contest but in my favor not in yours look at how how david responds here in verse 32 to saul's case of man there's just no way this can happen he said don't worry about this philistine i'll go fight him don't be ridiculous saul replied there's no way you can fight this philistine and possibly win you're only a boy and he's been a man of war since his youth notice how completely saul has bought into the lie that the enemy has told him there's no way you can win there's no way because god saw fit in this account to bring their champion before he looked like a champion he's just a boy now we we know from historical record that david ended up being a bad dude i mean he was a incredible warrior but not at this juncture he's just a young boy he doesn't look the part and see here's the problem some of you got the wrong picture of jesus christ you believe all those femi pictures of him it looks like he's a 97 pound weakling they couldn't you know punch his way out of a paper bag and then why would i put my trust in that i mean look at that guy ew and that's all a lie of the enemy trying to tell you jesus isn't strong enough jesus isn't strong jesus can't do it jesus doesn't want it bad enough jesus jesus won't do it for you jesus is tired of you he's just tired of fighting your bad he'll keep telling you that until you believe it but the truth is it doesn't matter what you think jesus looks like jesus is the champion he is the king of kings and the lord of lords he is the read revelation if you want to see jesus when he's going into war there ain't nothing standing up against jesus the the real jesus so if you've got a picture of him that's too small may i may i submit to you this truth your god is too small if you think you've got him all figured out he's definitely too small for you because you're not going to ever figure jesus out you're going to be glad he's on your side i'm so glad because i deserve to have jesus be on the other side fighting me but i'm so glad that he's chosen to put me on his team because we're good we're good we're good reminds me when i was a boy scout a hundred years ago we used to play tug-of-war every time we gathered and the other team had a a guy named mike fish now mike fish went about three and a half bills at 12. he was a giant man man child so whatever team got mike won the tug of war because he was just massive so me and my clever friends didn't get mike this time i thought you know what we'll do and we stalled and while we were stalling we tied our rope to the concrete wall behind us it was those old masonry walls where the top one was decorative and had kind of holes through it and stuff so we tied it through that thinking we're gold and we said okay ready go and to our shock mike pulled the entire wall down the whole wall i mean it just it ruined the entire wall we're like and there's our little rope tied around one block that got pulled out and the whole thing's down we're like wow there really was no winning without mike on your team but conversely if you got mike you knew this is a done deal i don't even i i just pretend i'm holding mike will pull him down your champion is so much stronger than that you're going to win as long as he's on your team why would you ever want to change teams why would you want to get on the other side and i don't know if i can still trust him you can trust him because he's he's he's good at war man he's good and david as a type of christ in our story here is helping saul re-believe by telling him the truth rather than then getting all stuck on the lie that he's bought that i can't win i can't win i can't win because goliath's so big and he's so strong and we don't have anybody that can match him and all that stuff and david says look we're fine look in verse 37 the lord who rescued me david speaking from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this philistine saul finally consented all right well go ahead and may the lord be with you what's what's david doing he's redirecting saul's eyes off of how big goliath is and he's redirecting him on the lord is the one that gave me victory over the bear and the lion it's the same lord's going to give me victory over this goliath get your eyes off the off the lie get your eyes off the problem get your eyes off the challenge and get your eyes on your champion and understand you've got this because he's got this and it doesn't mean it'll all work out exactly the way you want it to but it'll work out better than you want it to because what's coming at the end of jesus fighting your battles for you is great freedom where you're no longer captured by the lie that you can't beat this thing that is that is chasing you down when your champion jesus comes into your life to fight for you he empowers you to believe him at a different level that he really can set you free that's why his word to us this year is just believe when you understand your champion he will never abandon you what can separate us from the love of christ nothing right the bible says it goes gives the long list name me something that can separate you from your champion nothing and when you understand that it begins to empower you to think i'm good i'm good i'm good even though this is overwhelming what i'm facing even though this is really scary even though it's really difficult even though it's really hurtful whatever it is that you're facing we're not minimizing that the war is real we're not minimizing that the challenge is real we're not minimizing that there are giants like goliath that are bigger than you but what we are saying is your champion is big enough for all of that and he will not abandon you it will always fight for you when you do that that emboldens you and empowers you to believe i'm going to believe jesus because if i don't then this guy's going to take me down this is the one that's going to ruin my marriage this is the one that's going to take my business down this is the one that's going to take my health that that's how it'll be until you believe that jesus won't fail you and that's the truth he hadn't failed anybody yet and he's not going to fail you either his truth will always win out and jesus is going to fight the devil with truth just like david did in this instance look in verse 41 goliath walked out towards david with his shield bearer ahead of him sneering in contempt at this ruddy-faced boy am i a dog well i'm not going to get into a name calling contest goliath but you know you name it you wear it am i a dog he roared at david that that you come at me with a stick and he cursed david by the names of his gods well there's your first mistake right there goliath you got on the wrong team you're you're calling on the name of your gods as if they're somehow a match for the god come over here and i'll give your flesh to the birds and wild animals goliath yelled and david said well you got that half right somebody's going to be given to the birds and the animals but it isn't going to be me david replied to the philistine you come to me with your sword and your spear and your javelin but i come to you in the name of the lord of heaven's armies the god of the armies of israel whom you have defied and today the lord will conquer you and i will kill you and cut off your head and then i will give the dead bodies of your men and birds and to the birds and the wild animals because i know they're not keeping the terms of this covenant even though you set it up to ensure our defeat i know as soon as i cut your head off those boys were all taken running for the heels hills because that's the way war is fought and we're going to chase them down until every last one of them is gone just so you know because the whole world will know at the end of this day that there is a god in israel and everyone assembled here will know that the lord rescues his people and i not with sword and spear this is the lord's battle and he will give you to us that's exactly how jesus beat the devil in the temptation out in the desert you must be hungry jesus you've gone 40 days without any food tell tell these stones to be turned into bread because you've got that power from god and and jesus says yep i do but here's the deal the bible says man will not live by bread alone but by every word that comes out of the mouth of god i'm going to fight you with the truth devil oh you like the it is written game okay well let me take you to this outcropping here you just jump off because the bible says that god will send his angels to rescue you lest you dash your foot against the stone jesus said it does say that but it also says don't put the lord your god to a foolish test so if somebody shoves me off here he'll send angels to protect me because i'm not dying this way i'm dying on a cross that's going to beat you forever but but this isn't that day and uh and so i'm not going to put god to a foolish test and then finally he says bow down to me and i'll give you everything god has promised without the cross without the humiliation without the pain i'll give it all to you because it's mine to give and jesus said okay now it's we're done with the game get away from me because i'm not bound down to anybody but the heavenly father and that so this is done now we're done if you notice in that account that the devil has to leave when he's dismissed listen you have the same authority and power from jesus christ to tell the devil that's enough i don't want to hear one more word out of you if i hear one more word out of you i'm going to quote scripture that i don't even know because the holy spirit is going to pound you need to stop talking to me now i don't want to hear it anymore now listen i hope something's rising inside of you because that would be the holy spirit saying i will empower you with that kind of hood spa i will give you that kind of determination you do not have to keep buying the lie you don't have to keep listening to the lie you can just simply say i am all done listening to you enemy and my soul the only person i'm going to listen to is jesus christ let me get my bible out i'm going to start reading this bible every day i'm going to start feeding properly so that i'm not that weak weakling on the beach that keeps getting sand kicked in his face because what we'll see as we conclude this time together today is once the enemy's attempt at rigging the contest failed god's people were empowered not just to watch but to get into the fight now here's the cool thing because the enemy lied about the conditions when the tables got turned and goliath is killed they're all running at that point the champion david is leading the band to chase those guys down but he says come on boys get in the fight and they all get in the fight too and that's the way it works with you and me your champion will defeat the goliath of your life and then he will tell you follow me as we go into the battle i'm going to chase him all the way out of your life in this area that thing that used to own you isn't even going to have a the slightest chance of even getting its hooks in you again but come on get in the fight with me see he's not just asking you to please spectator for the rest of your life he's not asking you to live a passive life where you just stand by and whatever will be will be and the enemy gets to win here and when there the bible says no no you fight for each other when someone falls the bible says restore such a one gently but get in the process of helping them get back up when they get knocked down don't judge them the bible says humble yourselves before the lord not humble each other the bible says the tongue is a is a mighty force who contain it and so are the thumbs and with the thumbs you don't have the ministry of humbling others there is no such thing as a lie from the enemy makes you feel smarter makes you feel wiser makes you feel god glad i got that off my chest for a couple minutes but it doesn't deliver because the end of the day you just feel small and you end up with with isolated all by yourself which was his original intent anyway was for you to chase off anybody that has any similar beliefs to you so you're all by yourself but when you learn to do it jesus way and say okay you're my champion you've defeated the enemy now i want to follow you into the fight train my hands for war get me into the word of god allow me to know the word of god as well not in as a replacement for you jesus but so that i can follow you paul the apostle as he was beginning to share with people that they could have this freedom in their life too he said follow me as i follow christ he did not say follow me because i'm all that in fact he said i'm chief among sinners you can't believe how messed up i was before jesus got a hold of me he said follow me as i follow christ because we're going to follow christ right into the thick of it right into the war right into the battle we are not going to stand on the sidelines and just watch shaking in our boots we're going to get behind our champion and we're going to go wherever he's going and we're going to take down whatever he's taken down we're in this fight to the end because the fight is for people's souls that's why pastor joe said earlier everything we do is tied to a soul easter is a tremendous celebration i know you're gonna have so much fun celebrating all the truth of that tina great announcement i was just so captured the way we feel about it so great but can i tell you it's also a great opportunity for you to get people are being lied to day in and day out by the enemy that they can never be free and you can come introduce them to their champion on those services over easter and they can get free too and then they can get in the fight we can fight shoulder by shoulder pursuing jesus together our champion is not a member of a particular political party you know that right our champion is not flesh and blood our champion is jesus christ and our champion will enable us to fight when we're weary to restore us and to build us up but to stay in the fight so that we fight for each other not with each other so that when we fall we don't shoot or wounded we say oh you're down i got you and we you know we do the here let me let me do the fireman's carry let me let me pick you up bring it in bring you back in get you get your patch back up so you can get back in the fight it's not a passive position your champion's asking you to take he wants you in the fight and just like david and his boys chased down the enemy tell there was no one else to chase you are not to be a mere spectator in this war of the worlds you have a part to play in this war for people's souls you're to fight alongside other christians following your champion following his lead until the enemy is routed and on the run and jesus will teach you to fight the enemy's lies with the truth from his word and we're about ready to pray the promise of god is that the holy spirit will bring to your remembrance whatever he's taught you so as you put the word into your heart he'll bring it right up for you when you need it the most here's the problem the enemy has convinced far too many christians that once a week is enough eating in fact he's convinced you that if i go longer than a half hour it's too long you've you're stuffed to the brim thank you i don't want any more i'm full good lord right but every time every time we've done a corporate fast here i know how it is because the same thing for me we started let's we're going to start a you know 21 day fast we'll start today and by tonight we're like i am dying here if i don't get something to eat i've got 20 and a half more days i'll never survive this i must eat but the enemy says that only works with physical food he'll tell you once a week or once every other week or once a month whenever you can get yourself there you'll get fed and that'll that'll hold you it'll hold you over do you know you're starving just as bad for the truth and you need it because the enemy is going to keep lying it's not like you beat him one time and he's done goliath didn't have a head he was done but our enemy has been given permission to continue until jesus returns so until that day you and i have to feed on the word that's why we so often tell you get your life journal read with us this is the perfect time to get a live journal and read because we're just finishing deuteronomy so we've got leviticus behind us we've got numbers behind us we get into the wars and judges it'll be perfectly timed everything we talked about today you're going to get to see a whole bunch of it in judges it's going to be great so now's the perfect time to jump on board but can i tell you how powerful it is to know that you're reading with us because i don't know how many times i've said what did you get this out of the word this morning i did or you got something completely different i was like that's awesome what god showed you and that that'll help me too because the holy spirit's going to help you when you're in the fight following your champion right into the fight he's going to bring to your remembrance whatever you stuff away how does a young man or woman keep their ways pure by meditating on the word of god day and night why because that's your weapon it's sharper than any two-edged sword the bible says it's able to divide between the soul and the spirit it can separate out for you the feelings and the truth and it will set you up and you're going to find that the holy spirit is so good at this that he can bring to you remember stuff you've never really read i can remember really early on listening to the bible on cassette tapes you know how old i am cassette tapes over and over while i well i did mindless work in landscape just listened to the new testament over and over and over and over and i had never read it because i was just brand new to the faith i hadn't really read the bible through yet but i was listening to it every day and i would find myself talking to somebody and helping somebody in quoting scripture i knew i hadn't read yet because the holy spirit was faithful to bring it out for them because they needed the truth to combat the lie they were believing that's not because i'm all that that that i was just young and didn't know anything but the lord is that faithful to set people free he said i came to to deliver the captive to set the captives free jesus said that and you and i get to be alongside him as he does that that's what easter is all about in this western world we live in big celebrations where people are more likely to say yes to an invite at that time of the year then listen they're all cooped up they're so sick that being in their house they'll come even if they're still not ready to come they'll probably still want to come to easter that's got to get out of these four walls they're more ready to say yes to your invite than they ever have been you need to be with us in this and invite people who are being lied to day in and day out they are sitting ducks until somebody tells them the truth because jesus didn't say i am a truth i am a way i'm a life he said i am the truth i am the way and the life i know our world would love to believe there are many paths and i that'd be great if it were true but it's just not true if you wanted to drive to my house today you can't just go anywhere you want you need directions you can't just i'll just go north but if i really want you at my house i gotta tell you the way to get there god has loved you enough to tell you the way he's not going to lie to you like the enemy does and says there's many ways he's not going to lie to you and say there's many truths he's not going to lie to you and say there's there's all kinds of lives you can live and they're all equally great he's going to say i've got a destiny for your life i've got a hope and a future for you that is so far superior to anything you could fashion on your own if you will just allow me jesus speaking i will lead you into this life that's worth living i came you might have life and life more abundantly i want to give you a rich and satisfying life jesus says in his word he wants to show you what your life can be he wants to show you who you really are he wants to show you and equip you so that you never get lied to again the more truth you more the the more truth you know the harder it is to lie to you [Music] i'm gonna pray but you parents know what that is when you have a toddler coming you with cookies smeared all over their face did you get in the cookie jar really what's all these cookies all over my face no point to the dog because you've been there you know they're lying to you right the more truth that jesus can reveal to you the harder it'll be for the enemy to lie and i want him so incapacitated that he can't say one more thing to you that will ever have any effectiveness i want the enemy completely neutered in your life and in my life because he's not going to stop lying so we have to defend ourselves we have to defend ourselves and the way we do it is what jesus said if you choose to follow me then the truth you'll know the truth and the truth will make you free so that's our opportunity right now make a choice to follow him join me with you father as we come before you we're so grateful for the truth thanks that you love us that much to tell us the truth thank you that you don't just set us on our own way on our own path to figure it out on our own you've told us the truth about how things really go down and you've unmasked our enemy today you have you have taken away the element of surprise you've taken away his opportunity to ambush us anymore you've shown us he really is the father of lies trying to destroy us and i thank you so much that greater is he that's in us than he that's in the world i thank you jesus that you are so far superior i thank you that you've chosen to be our champion to fight our battles for us and then to invite us to follow you into the battles to come father we thank you for that today and we want to make a choice to make you in a brand new way today in a fresh new way today jesus i need you to be my champion i need you to teach me your ways i need to take your yoke upon me i need to take your purpose on i need to get in the fight the churches were praying god is listening and if you're one that would join me today because i'm going to raise my hand in a moment like i'm going to ask you to do but if you're ready to say jesus i need you to be my champion in a new way for me and i need you to help me with this lie i've been believing that i i've been victorious in most areas but not in this one area this one area has got me and it will always have me jesus i need you to fight for me here i need you to show me your way because it's better than mine if you're willing and desirous of that today i want you to shoot your arm up right where you are all across this room in your home in your car wherever you're watching us whether you're participating in this join me because i've got my hands in the air because this is what i want more than anything for me and for my family and for you because those of us that choose to have jesus lead us our lives get better our families get stronger our prospects get better our businesses thrive we do better with jesus at the helm than we at the helm so jesus we come to you saying we confess our need for you our desire for you and we need you to speak the truth to our hearts so that we never believe a lie again show us how to feed ourselves on your word god [Music] show us how to how to eat for ourselves thank you lord if we're just learning that you'll just keep spooning it in there but god we ask for you to help us to to learn how to eat ourselves let us be as eager as a toddler wants to learn how to eat that good stuff or let us learn however messy it gets far we're willing to do it thank you that you've defeated our enemy thank you that you've overcome him and all of us that are praying this prayer especially for our friends online there's information on your screen text believe to that number that's there for you we're going to be in this together because that's what god has called us to we're in this together we're going to hold each other up we don't shoot our wounded in this place but we do bind them up and help them to heal because we've all been there and we all know what that's like and we're all going to you're struggling with the lie that you're just not good enough you have been told that all your life and it look life seems to be bearing that out you're the one that gets passed over for the promotions you're the one that doesn't seem to have your ideas work out you struggle and you always have and the enemy has been lying to you to tell you that's the way it's going to be for the rest of your life and the lord has called you out today not in any way to do anything but to tell you the truth is he's got a plan for your life a purpose for your life and it's far better than you could ever dream and it has nothing to do with your capabilities or your abilities it's his will for your life and he's going to help you i promise you your past is a poor predictor of your future god has got better things for you than you know and he's going to show you what that looks like in the meantime he's given you a great heart for the hurting he's given you a heart for people who have been kind of pushed around by life because you know what that is experientially and god's going to equip you so you can really bring comfort and encouragement to people who are also getting pushed around in line it won't be in vain god won't waste this painful time that you're in right now god's going to use it in a powerful and a big way in your life this time you're in is not wasted god is going to use this for you he's going to use you in the lives of other people hurting the bible says to comfort others with the comfort that you've been comforted with and god is giving you comfort right now today and he's going to use you in a credible way those people will know you know because you've experienced it god loved you enough to let you feel it for them so that you wouldn't be clueless trying to help them they they're going through tough stuff and he's going to help you to help them that's god's will for your life don't you believe the lie that you're just that one that never has it work out god is with you he is for you and he's going to help you i promise you and this is a gathering of people a community of people who are learning how to stand by each other even when we don't understand each other and we don't do don't agree on everything we're in this together if that's you just take that to heart just let the holy spirit personalize this message today take it right to your heart it's okay that's me that's totally what i've been believing i'll always be a second stringer well maybe that's been true in the past it's not true for going forward god's got a lot for you father i just thank you that in that moment you can speak words of knowledge you can you can bring a specific and personal truth to our lives we're so grateful for that we're expecting a lot more of that going forward we're expecting you to direct our every step like you promise you will do you order the steps of the righteous and we are made righteous by the blood of christ not by our own accomplishments so we're grateful we're gonna worship you now lord because you deserve it you always do you you are worthy of our praise you are you're worthy of our praise we're going to tell you today god in conclusion of our time how much we love you and lord how much we need you we're so grateful that we have this opportunity to worship you and lord for as long as we have that freedom we're going to
