you know I think about that opening scene in the pilot a newsroom and you go into this speech this monologue that's amazing it drew me into the show like I was hooked from that monologue forward and I wanted about your experience of reading that pilot script initially and if that drew you in as an actor the same way as it drew me in as an audience member absolutely when I saw that speech I said I've been waiting for this speech for 35 years really and I knew what it was it was the opportunity to go back into that serious actors room in a big way all I have to do is hit it out of the park day three of an 18 day shoot on the pilot we shoot that scene and and it was a big deal because we don't have a series yet you shoot the pilot even for HBO even with Aaron Sorkin you shoot the pilot and then they decide and they have turned down and gotten rid of people bigger than then Aaron and me on the way to the set I jumped into Aaron's car and he leaned back and said you know as important as the speeches to you it's twice as important to me he was scared shitless and number two three and four from HBO showed up no other day there they are over at video village Sam Waterston Olivia Munn and Tom Sadowski drove an hour and a half north about they're not in the scene they're not in the scene they want us as Samson later yeah I wanted to see what you did but I also want to see if I had a job or not so now with all that with the HBO executives coming and the and the other cast members it's that add to your fire and make you more confident or does that make you more nervous yeah get out of the way which is my whole thing which is what happens when you move to the Midwest and you've been waiting for 35 years and you've seen other people get roles that you wanted when you've seen other people do speeches that you know you you are now given your opportunity it's the ninth inning bases are loaded you need to get a hit no preferably a home run no anything else is unacceptable flip it so it's not about two three and four it's the same thing with opening on Broadway though the press is here I'm here to judge you as much as you are to judge me keep up I flip it you just have to flip it but you got to do the work you can't do that and then not be prepared to not do the work you have to outwork everyone else on the show as soon as I did the first take of that when it was this way they were crying at video village apparently because of what Aaron had written so well and what it meant to the country and all that stuff but also because oh my god we've got a will McAvoy oh my god we've got a series and then take two was boom there's no avoiding those stakes in those moments no so you do the work and then that happens [Music]
