hi everyone it's donnell mcadams sorry we were a few minutes late i was in on another um live so i'm here today to talk with you about the janome set of templates and i've already done that a couple of times but i'm going to show you this again and today we're going to do a little simple project so you might want to grab a piece of paper and something to write with to take a couple notes because it's a real simple little pattern that you can do so for today i want to make sure that you understand that we are going to be doing a class with janome on the new m7 continental on saturday this coming saturday may 9th at 2 p.m eastern time so i want you to understand that this does not have to be that you own that machine we're going to have a lot of information we're going to be sharing a lot of hints and tips just like we always do and of course there will be a project that we're doing the main focus will be the use of these templates so you can see here this is the janome set of templates now if you don't have these templates you can go ahead and purchase them from a janome dealer or you can get the templates that you have and have them ready so that when i'm using something like this template you could use a circle because it's very similar in shape or you could use an oval so we're going to be using several templates and you'll probably have something that's similar to the template that we use so you would be able to use that so again you'd want to go over to the janome sewing i believe it's janome sewing.com and you're going to find information there i will also be posting it here and i'll be posting it on my facebook site all things quilting and sewing with donnell mcadams so the links will be there so that you can get joined up it will not be on their main page it will be on their classes page so it's going to be a lot of fun a lot of their educators are going to be online there people from so steady will be online and be able to answer your questions as we go and so i really would like to see that class as as full as possible so that we can get more information out there it's really been fun to start working with the sewing machine companies in an individual basis and we just had baby lock training this week and we're going to be doing more of that so i'll remind you that again before we leave today but what we're going to do first is we are going to be putting together some three pieces of fabric actually two pieces of fabric and a fusible fleece and so i have the regular foot on the machine right now you'll notice i have left my glider on because i can sew with that glider on so i'm going to take the templates off here and set them aside for a minute and i'm going to get a piece of fabric here that i've already cut this is 15 inches square you could do this in any size i don't think you'd really want it much bigger than 17 or 18 inches but this is a 15 inch square of fabric this is just a plain piece of fabric here right side is turned in this is the right side of this fabric and on that fabric i have fused a layer of pellon 987f and it's just a fusible fleece that i have fused onto that so i've already done that i did that with my heat press and have that already lined up so i went ahead and put them together rather than using pins i just use my little wonder clips and i want to show you a couple of hints because i think you can always learn more about sewing that's why i titled my facebook page all things quilting and sewing because there's always something to learn so what i'm going to do is i'm going to set my machine for a quarter of an inch seam so my needle is moving over there this particular machine has 90 needle positions so what i'm doing is i'm moving as far left that's putting it in a quarter of an inch now i could have put the quarter of an inch foot on here but i have a reason that i wanted to leave this one on today now on the project piece that i'm doing i am not using this blue green variegated thread that's what i'm going to be quilting with but i wanted you to be able to see what i'm doing so i'm going to go ahead and set the foot down so it's right on the edge so i've got my quarter of an inch and i'm going to stitch a few stitches forward and then i'm going to hold in the reverse lever and stitch a few stitches back i'm actually going to widen that seam out seam allowance out just a little bit because i think you'll be able to see it better so i'm going to stitch a few stitches forward wow i didn't widen it out very far at all so i'm going to put the needle down i'm going to go in reverse now back to where i started that's better and then what i'm going to do is i'm going to leave that needle in place and because we're going to turn this square right side out i like to go ahead and then put my foot back down well i've got this going in all different directions try this again doesn't want to go down oh i lifted it up by hand that's why this has a hand lever on the back and so to get it in the right position i had lifted it up by hand so what i'm doing is setting that needle down i'm going to sew to the edge of my fabric i'm going to hold my reverse and sew back to where that quarter of an inch is and then i'm going to just simply rotate this and what i did there is make it easier for me to press that opening when i turn you'll see what i'm talking about so i'm coming down to the corner and here's another hint if you want a nice corner when you turn it you want it to be nice and square if you will take a few stitches diagonally i like to take three so i've got one more to go straight and then all i'm doing is turning this diagonally and taking one two one more three and then that way when i trim that corner it will then turn to a better point if you've never used wonder clips they are great because they just you can take them in and out so much easier than you can with pins and you sure can't stitch over them that's for certain gisela from oregon would like to know where she can find the janome class is there a link somewhere that we can guide them we will have the link on the so study page it will be on my page and it should be right on the janome sewing page too good question so what i'm going to do right here is i'm going to go one more stitch i'm turning it at like a 45 degree angle you can see this point is headed out to the right and i'm going to go three stitches whoo that was almost i think four that's okay it still ended up in the right place and then i'm coming down keeping my quarter of an inch and so when we get it down here almost there we go turn it again one two three turn that we get to the corner again stop one two three and i am right here ready to do yes that's it right here ready to do my reverse so i'm going to reverse about three or four stitches and come back to that spot and then simply do this stitching here again and so i'm coming forward i'm going to reverse and then i actually like to go back this way just a few stitches to secure that and it doesn't matter if it's in this little allowance or not so now i'm going to go ahead and cut that and so when we turn this through first of all i would take and i would trim these so i'm going to trim those at that diagonal and you can actually see the diagonal there and then when i go to turn this this doesn't have a choice but to turn in because i have told it you're not going anywhere but you're going to turn in so i would turn that all through i would use my point turner to push the points out and i've already done one so that you can see it and so this is one right here let me find my opening there it is and so this just goes right in like it's supposed to because of those little stitches that i did out to the edge so now this is pressed and ready to go and i'm going to show you a little secret on that too so i'm going to get my pressing mat and lay it over here on there we go and what i do is this is right here this is just a piece of heat n bond light you can probably see the shine on it the little bumps and so what i'm going to do is i'm going to take that heat n bond light it's a real tiny little strip that's why i save my leftovers and i'm going to set that down so that it's going to be in there now remember it's got a side on it that we have to peel off but i'm taking my little steam fast iron here my little mini iron that always stays hot and i'm going to wait just a second for it and then when i open this up i'm going to take the paper there and i'm just going to peel that paper right off leaving the sticky in there it brought out a thread with it and so now that sticky is there so i can actually just go back and press that and it's going to stay right together for me now i'm going to be edge stitching this so i'm going to turn this like so you're going to get a sneak peek at what we're going to learn today but i wanted to show you how i can use an edge stitch a lot of different machines have solutions for this this particular machine i am using the foot that has a little edge over here and so i'm going to set that there sometimes you have a blind hem foot that works i missed we did have a question what was the foot you had before that was just my regular um uh multi-purpose foot there we go and so what i'm going to do is i'm going to leave that thread so that you can see it i would rather change the color but it'll be better that you can see it and i put all the way to the left and so what i'm going to do is i'm just going to simply hold my thread to start with i'm going to put my foot down and we're just going to get to be able to sew right against that edge now on this one i do want a nice square corner so i'm going to check it i need to come one more stitch and then i'm going to make that turn and then we'll come down this side but by having that on there i can easily do my top stitching now i'm not going to go all the way around because you know how to do that and i want to spend time talking with the design so i'm just going to cut that but look to see what you can use to make it so it's easy to go around that um design cindy would have loved to know that trick on closing that up for all the masks she's been making yeah and i'm making masks too and i had promised you guys some of you were on the other day and you had asked about the mask i'm doing i made several of them over the weekend unfortunately they're all gone right now but i'm gonna do a tutorial if not tonight i'll get it done and i'm gonna my all things quilting and sewing with donnell mcadams page and you will be able to see why i love it it is so easy to do and i don't even need to close that because of the way i do the folding and everything so i invite you to you know keep a check on that so that you can see that because it is a very it's actually the pattern that joann's has distributed on their site but i do it quite a bit different because i want it to be easier i mean it's just really easy the way i'm doing it and i think it looks a whole lot more professional so anyway nothing against joanne's thank you for their pattern because it comes in four sizes but i'm going to do it just a little differently so can you tell us what machine you're using right now i am using the m7 continental from janome and this is the one i'll be using in that class so now i'm setting this for ruler work i've put my ruler work foot on and i have set it up and just that easy it's just like four touches of buttons i changed the foot the feed teeth have automatically gone down and i'm ready to start now i went ahead and drew this on here and for those of you that may be joining us for the first time i sprayed this with in this case it was actually starch savvy from june taylor and i sprayed that twice so it has two layers of this on there this is what the bottle looks like and it has two layers of that on there and so now whenever i mark this looks like i just used a sharpie but it's actually one of the frixon markers the frixon markers are the ones that have the felt tip i used this one for this particular one the other day when i was showing you the mini designs i used the one that are called fine line now normally i do just use fine line but the fine line tend to be a little light i can see them where i'm at but you wouldn't be able to see it so that's why i went ahead and did this and for those of you that have not seen this before i'm going to move this so you can tell this is what is called a crosshair grid and so what i did is i centered i found my center point i centered my crosshair grid on that piece and i went ahead and then simply drew those lines in and then that one was skinny so i put the or as a fine point so i put that in the middle and so this is what i've ended up with so again when we started we had a 15 inch square so obviously it's a little smaller now actually i'll tell you what mine is was a 13 and a half because i wanted to get all my pieces across so this is a 13 and a half inch square but you could go up to an 18. so what i did is on the diagonal marks here the four diagonals i measured out five and an eighth inches from the center and put a little line here now we're not going to be using that until the second step that we do but i just went ahead and did that so five and an eighth inch out i made a mark all right so here we go with our templates and the one i'm using today is this one here that i'd say looks like a light bulb it's actually a spinifex 11 this comes in multiple sizes but in the janome kit it just comes in this one size so what i'm going to be doing is when i point put this in here i am going to make it so on the ones without this line i am doing the points so i'm going to come to the center here and i'm going to put my foot down and i'm going to put it right in the center my needle down my needle up my foot up and i can't remember whether i cut yeah i did so my thread's short so i need to get those bent tweezers and pull that thread out of there now my bobbin thread on this is white because the background of my fabric is white and this is going to show on the bottom so i'm going to go ahead and set my foot back down and put my needle into that spot and then i'm just going to get these threads out of the way in the back and as you can see this is more of the pointed end of it this is rotating back here off the back of my foot and there is a line right on my template that's etched that i'm lining up with this black line so we're going to go around and we're going to stop i'm going to rotate the whole thing so you can see it if i was just sitting here by myself i would have just turned the template around and done it to the back but i want you to be able to see it i'm going around this direction and this is a variegated thread that has the colors of my flowers from the other side i'm going to rotate to this one so carol has a question about the foot you're currently using she has a janome um and wants to know the name of the foot that you're using to see if she has those as well this foot is one that comes with the m7 it comes with the 15 000 it comes with the 9450 and it would come in the upgrade on the 9400 the rest of them i don't know if this foot fits or you i know you can buy it separately i do know that but those machines that i talked about it comes with so you need to talk to your janome dealer i don't know if there's a janome person on right now they might be able to answer that if there's an educator on watching but it's a great question but this is a ruler work foot so this is what my design looks like here the next way i'm going to do this is i'm going to pull this out and instead of doing this straight which i could easily do i'm going to turn this around and i'm going to make it so the wide end is out toward me so the bigger part of that light bulb is out here there also came in the question of how far does this wish table extend past behind the needle um it depends on your machine because this particular machine if you can see my fingers here the bed of this machine is good size it's big and so this is put the table is custom fit which i'll show you in just a minute but it's custom fit so it depends on how big this bed is how far back that goes so that's a great question and you're going to get as much use out of your table because they realize that they need to put it in the position where you're going to have the use from your table so to answer that question it would depend on your machine correct it depends on your machine and they custom fit all machines so tables are made as you order them and since we're talking about tables let me write remind you that this is mother's day weekend and we have a mother's day special going on where you get the glider which is 25 you get that free with your purchase so i've done all four of those i'm going to bring my needle up and i'm going to bring my foot up and you can see the design that i have there and i'm going to go ahead and clip that thread and i'm going to take the time to hide this because i want to be able to use this project when i'm finished so what i'm going to do is this is a cinch needle this is what the packet looks like and there's side threading and so what i'm doing is i'm threading it into the side of that neat or into the side the side of the needle is holding my threads and i'm going to the back right down through that center so when i flip this over i always take the time to make sure i got all my threads through because sometimes you think you do and there's one still on the other side let's see well they all came through this time and what weight of thread did you use i'm using 40 weight cotton quilting thread on this one and i'm not sure what brand i have wonderful and so what i'm going to do is i'm going to then i did it too fast there we go i'm going to make a loop got to get all my threads not just part of them i'm going to make a loop and i'm going to take the point of my needle i've got to figure out where this little guy is coming from and i'm going to hold that in place till that goes down to the spot there in the center and i'm going to take all of these threads now you'll notice my needle is about a quarter of an inch or maybe even 3 8 of an inch away and that's okay because what i want to do is i want to pull this through and when i pull that through there i want to be able to pull my knot you'll watch it it just popped right in there so my knot is actually about right there because it popped into that and this way i've buried everything i give it just a little bit of a tug so i when i cut it i don't have to be right at the surface and if you watch real close boom it just goes right back in there so i've secured those threads so in the project that we're making this is actually going to be the bottom on the outside so it's going to sit on our table like this and this is what's going to show so now what we're going to do is we're going to go out to these points and i haven't marked all of them i said the diagonals but i actually want to mark all of them so what i'm going to do is i'm going to take this ruler and i'm going to put it at that inch and 5 8 right or excuse me 5 inches and 1 8 and let's see nope i don't need that so just scratch what i just said lots of questions sure i guess we've got questions so let's go for them okay so i was mistaken with what carol was asking earlier she want to know about your feet that you used before that you use the ruler for the ruler foot excuse me this foot here that one and the one you started with okay this is an edging foot and wherever you you can see in here my openings and so it allows me there's several markings there's one here and there's one on this edge and so what i was doing is i was guiding that right on that edge now this foot i brought over because this is one from another machine but what it is it's a left edge top stitch foot so if i were to come over here on the edge let me get it up here so you can see it it would be high on this side and low on this side another great foot for this is simply to do this edge stitching is simply using your hem foot your blind hem foot probably some of you have never even used that for anything but it's great for getting close to your edge the foot before that these all snap on this is just my regular all-purpose foot many of us have one that looks like this on this one it's clear in the middle and it has the full nine millimeter opening then barbara wanted to know what the tape was that you have on your template okay the tape i use on my templates to hold the gates closed because that's what we open up the gate there is what we call rnk embroidery perfection tape this tape was originally designed for in the hoop embroideries so it is not going to leave you any residue it sticks it holds i probably only replace this tape about once every three months for you that probably once every six months because i'm on the road and use these almost absolutely you know every single day but what it does is it allows you to just pop this open so that when you need to get into your template you can get around the foot and then close it back up now you can imagine if this was still the scotch tape that was on it when you got it this scotch tape would be a mess and it would be breaking and all that so it's a very good tape very clean tape and the hint i'll give you because you'll do it the wrong way and then you'll realize oh i should have done it this way is always take time to cut the tape because you want this to be a clean cut so when you open it up you don't have all of that mess all right another one um kelly joined us a little late want to know if this was two pieces of fabric and batting put together okay what it is kelly is this was mine is 13 and a half inches because i wanted to get enough across the width of my fabric to make my samples to show you because you really i only needed one but you can do 15 16 whatever size you want but this if i turn this back you can see this is just a plain piece of fabric it's right sides together and then this which is going to be my bottom which is the same as this one right here has a fusible fleece on the back so you have fusible fleece on the wrong side of one of them and then this piece doesn't have anything on it so it's two pieces of fabric and one piece of fusible fleece instead of using the fusible fleece could you use a thin foam instead of that batting i think you probably could yes or you could even use batting that wouldn't make the reason that we're going to do this is we're going to be shaping this into it's not going to be a bowl because it's going to be square but we're going to be shaping this into a a container type thing so that's why i wanted something a little firmer but you could just use batting i guess last question from geraldine for right now is what machines does this template work with this these sets of templates that's a great question geraldine because it's a janome set but and each of the templates has the word janome let me get one that i can show you right down here is one that says janome and so all the templates say janome on that but your machine doesn't know it so it doesn't really matter so if you have a high shank machine you can use these templates now i don't know the answer to it yet i'm still working on finding out whether we're going to be able to get those in low shank because i know some of you have low shank machines and you certainly would love to have these templates okay so the next step we're going to do doesn't have anything to do with this dot yet at all so don't worry about that dot we are going to take our spacing gauge and remember those of you that have been with me for like the last six weeks now that's really a lot of fun too so what we're going to do is we're using our spacing gauge yours would be clear and from the end of the design no matter whether it's a point or like this we are going to measure one inch i'm going to go one inch here there's nothing nothing magic about one inch it's just that it's what works with what we're doing and it's an easy way to measure with our spacing gauge so all i'm doing is rotating this around making sure i'm at my one inch so now what i'm going to do is i'm going to use the ark and i really do like this arc now your sampler set came with an arc but it's not quite this big but you could use this one so if you're joining me on saturday at two o'clock eastern time and we happen to be using the ark you can get out the ark from the sampler set so i'm picking one of these dots that i made or crosshairs i'm going to pull that thread up i'm going to raise the foot and i'm going to pull this out now you saw i just kind of floss that underneath there and got those threads out i'm setting this back down in that same space and i'm going to set my template against that now no matter where i am on this it's going to be the same arc but i find it's easiest if i just go ahead and kind of find the center of that template there's actually a center there because that allows me to have my hands on in a good position to actually hold my template comfortably and in place and then i'm coming down to this particular spot i'm using my quarter of an inch and i'm measuring because i have to allow a quarter of an inch space so when i stitch from there to there i end up right back in the spot that i wanted to end up on and i'm going to come to this spot this one is going to be so much fun you're going to see nancy thinks all of the spacing gauges should be colored so they can find them easier just let so steady know you'll notice i do have a little wrist lanyard on it i actually sell those because i couldn't do it without it now this is not making an exact circle and it doesn't matter and so now we're coming right back to the spot we started and so i'm going to come around in that same spot and then what i'm going to do is i'm not good at using my template like this so that's what's the beauty of these is i can just turn this around because i want to make this come like that so i'm still using my template the same way and i'm measuring but i want you to focus in real close right here on this spot because i'm actually going to make it darker so you can see it because when i set this template like this so it's on that line and against that spot i don't have flat to flat so if i stitch this around here my needle is going to end up over here so what i need to do is i need to put it at an angle so this flat side is against the flat side of my curve so as i go around here like this you can see how that direction changes so if i'm right down here the direction has to be the same way so now what i'm going to do is i'm going to come to that spot right there the only reason i marked these is because that's the one i don't know why i even told you the five and an eighth because that doesn't matter what i'm doing so what i'm going to be doing is taking this particular template that's the oval and if you're in class and i'm using this you could use a circle and i'm going to just do this oval space like that i'm going to open it up like i said forget about that five and an eighth inch mark i don't know what that was all about and i'm going to set this back in place and i'm going to set it at that funny odd angle and i'm going to stitch to the next one i don't do that design on that one because it's going to be in the way if i do because the next step would eat it up so i'm going to come to this one that i've marked i'm going to set this towards me i didn't close up my oval because i knew i was going to use it again and so now i close it up line it up now those of you that have been with me when i did my template class my template class where we cut out this would be a great design to do for template quilting also and this would be something you could make in a pretty short quick little time if you had a hostess gif you needed to make or something for mother's day you could do this so i don't want one here i'm coming to this spot and i'm gonna take this to the side again come in from the side and line this up the whole idea is thinking these designs through so that when you stitch them you don't have a ton of starts and stops so you can see from the first time i picked up what clear back down here i haven't done any pulling up of threads or tying of threads or anything so i can do a lot of stitching when i think ahead as to what i'm going to be doing so this will be the last of the what actually is called the pointed oval which i think is a great name because it is a pointed oval now if i had one and two in each of these as i went i could have put a little bit of a flare into them so i would have put little feathers in there that would have been nice to do but since i didn't do it on the originals i won't do it on oh yeah i can do it because i can go back and do that on the other so this way you'll get to see it so what i'm going to do is i'm going to take the edge here come in so that this edge is touching so my acrylic is touching the stitching and i'm going to come up and go back i'm going to pull this in i'm going to come up but not as quite as far and go back i'm going to pull it in one more time and go back and so now i take this out and before you do this next one i have a question from lillian on this arc what do you do if it doesn't reach from point to point you either have two options there are bigger arcs because i have one that's about 12 inches or you need to put a different point in there for example if it was too far from here to here put another point in here so we don't have to go from here to here we just go from there to there so you could have rotated your crosshair grid and gotten more points to join up so that's a great question if i had all my projects here i'd show you because i did a little bag that has this on the front of it and it has little tiny of these because i did it so that it was in between each one of those so it's a little tiny so what i'm going to do here is i'm going to pull up my thread or pull it out i should say and you can see how i embellish that i'm just going to quickly go back and do that because this might happen to you and you'd have the same concept and we know what do i do next so i'm going to set that down put my thread or needle in pull it up i left it long because i'm going to tie them later so i'm pulling that out foot back down and i'm just pulling this in so this is the way it was when i did the design i'm pulling it into the edge there now you would not want to do this if you were going to be doing template quilting where you were cutting it out because that's not going to cut out so i'm going to raise oops raise that up marge wants to know where she can get the template set where is it available you would need to contact a janome dealer i know that you're going to be able to and as you well know a lot of dealers are not open right now but i bet if you looked on their website you can contact them via email i do know that you will be able to get those templates on the there will be links to go to your local janome dealer on the class on saturday also will directions written directions for this project be available definitely i'm working on the this project no this project won't you'll just need to watch this again but it's just that square and you'll be able to you know see the picture of it at the end i'm going to go ahead and just cut this because those threads went back and forth several times what about people in canada can they get the janome in canada yes i would assume so yes okay let's see oops gotta pull it in okay so what i'm gonna do is i'll tie those threads later and this one i know i can cut how do you know when you can cut them versus have to bury them well if i've gone over this back and forth multiple times and when i finished this i just kind of did a two in a circle i was talking so you didn't see that and and so that one is secure so i can just cut it i don't know if there's any on the back yeah you can see it's just two little threads right here and i can cut those so if you if you have it so that it's not going to be like i wouldn't over here i wouldn't want to go back and forth that's just personal opinion but here there's multiple threads this one will need to be buried so what i'm going to do now so you can see this is get that iron pressing mat back there and i usually use my wool mat but it's over here on the table but i'm just going to come over here if you want to take a look at this right here and i'll just tell you we're going to set it up nice and square for you and if you want to just take your phone and take a picture of it or you can refer to it later so there it is what the design is this is just same sim the same spinifex 11 just in two different positions and then this was just using the arcs remember that five and an eighth doesn't matter because we didn't i don't know why i said that but now what i'm going to do is i'm just going to press this out some of you were worried about those heavy black lines but i told you i have that starch savvy on there so there's my design now the way we're going to finish this up is we are going to fold this in half some of you may meet almond joy she's our little sewing friend here and she's sneaking her feet into the picture so she might just come right on screen here in a minute or curl up and take a nap we're not sure which so what i'm doing now is i'm taking these like this and i am going to be marking on this one i'm going to mark up three inches and that's probably what you would want to do on about any of the sizes so let's see let's go this way so i'm going to put that mark on here and i'm going to go to the other end and do the same thing now all i've done is fold this in half and then to prepare it for the other side i'm going to fold that in half because by the time we get here it's going to be just a little wonky to work with so there's a mark and there's a mark so that's three inches up from the fold and so now i have to switch back or i can actually stitch with this in here with my sashley [Music] tool but i don't have that handy i'll have to show you that sometime because it's a really neat tool that allows you to stitch regular stitching with your ruler foot so i'm going back to my straight stitching and and which foot are you going back to i'm going back to the one that has the edge guide on it because i'm going to stitch right on top of the stitching i've already done but i have to get my guide lined up so always take the time to use your screwdriver and give your foot a little bit of a tightening because nothing is more frustrating than to be sewing in that come out so i'm going to be starting right there so i'm going to move my needle over to the right until it's lined up with my previous stitching which is right there and i'm going to go ahead and put that needle down get my thread out of the way and i'm going to stitch forward and then i'm going to stitch backward and then to the bottom and reverse and i'm going to go ahead and cut that thread i'm going to take my little scissors here and cut this and on this one i'm simply turning it around but i'm still sewing the part down here and if you've never been told this it's always good when you put your foot down to stitch a few stitches forward before you reverse because that allows things to get seated in the right place so that they will not make a mess or go down underneath some of you are probably like me it's really hard for you to leave threads unclipped right at the time i just always have to go back and clip them right then um the questions come through are your feeds are your feed teeth still down no my feet teeth are up now my feet teeth are up so now because i have already pre-marked that other side there it is i'm going to turn this and how wide of a seam is that this is right on top of my previous seam and i did that about a quarter of an inch from the edge kinda looks like you're doing a little bit of origami yeah it does right here but i'm right on top of that previous stitching that i did when i did the very first piece here's what i did i left that color in so you could see it that's what i'm stitching over so i've already done my back stitching so i can go ahead and cut my thread and i've got you can see what i got going here i got one more side over here to do real fun simple project go forward and then go back i want to make sure i see where my line oh yep right there but i'm going to take a second chance and measure it yep it's right and we're going to come down i'm going to reverse remember i got a few threads to tie off but i'll do that later before we go any farther i'm just going to take the iron i don't even need my pressing board because i'm just going to press out that little you see how easy that came out and because the way i marked them i'm just on that edge got to find the other one there it is and it comes out that easy and then this is just going to fold down like so and you can see down in there ignore my threads that pretty stuff that we just did and you can see how this just most people then take this and tack it i could also take this like so and i could put a mini design here or i could have done that before i actually finished it so you could have done one of the minis from like the other day and you have this fun little container that actually has these little wings that stick out now if you didn't want those wings that stick out you could re you know stitch this down but i actually like it like that because then i can look in and i can see my design in there so now this is totally up to you how you work this i wanted it so my design was pretty in here i can put buttons on the edge here i could do whatever i wanted to hold that down but i can almost tell you if i go over to my iron and press this this is going to stay down by itself you wouldn't necessarily have to do that so you can see just by me doing this that it's like it's going to stay down so now the other thing to remember is you don't have to make that into that little project there you could continue this is the beginning of it you saw me do that this is the beginning you could go ahead and do that other design that i did and then add something out here in the corners and then this is just like a little candle mat it's really nice to have something like this and then you can set your candles on it so i just wanted to show you some of the templates that come with the janome set you can look on a couple of weeks ago i did a whole set on the janome so i showed you these hearts this is a continuous heart design i showed you that one and i also showed you how to do this little design right here actually let me show you a thing that i had an idea of doing with this real quick before we quit and while i'm doing that again let me invite you to the janome sewing page we're going to have a link on this page and also a couple of other places probably on westley so that you'll be able to see that there that class is going to be a two hour class with a project megan if you want to show them that project tell me where it's at well right here this is the project that we're going to be doing and this is a bag that will hold your templates on the back you'll notice that it has cross hatching we'll show you a couple of ways you can do the cross hatching and there's a fun zipper there we're going to be showing you how to put that zipper in because we're showing you some features of the machine and i just put the link on so it's on a couple times on this feed okay she's put the link on there so you can find that so what i'm going to do is i'm going to set this up again for ruler work and yes only four touches of buttons and we're ready to go so what i'm going to do here is i'm going to show you how i was what those five and a half or five and an eighth inch marks were for because it would have put you right there and so what i was going to do was i was going to start here no actually i was doing it this way here we go there's a line right there and that's where the five and an eighth is and i'm going to go ahead and in this channel i'm putting my foot down and the first time around pardon me not pulling it up i'm just going to go around the bigger side and this time i'm going around the smaller side and then what i was going to have you do would be to turn this we'll bring it over this way and we're going to do the same thing now at this point to get back to where we can move on we would be retracing we would come across here so does this turn into like a border this would be a border and you can do this same thing on anything i was just trying to figure out how we could miter it i'm not sure i had it exactly figured out would you be able to do this with the little project that you made or is that a lot of stitches no you could do that because i think if i figured this out right this is pretty close i'd have to do a little bit more figuring because i need to bring it down a little bit but you can see i'll go one more round i agree with lori she says it looks like the enterprise ah star star wars friend right there thank you lori for that one so i'll show you how you could do this to measure it so you can see here this is a little off-center so now that i've actually stitched this out i know that from here to here when i measure that i have four and a half inches so three of these is four and a half inches and i know for some of you gonna go hey i can't deal with all that but trust me it works so if that's four and a half inches that's why i use my centering ruler what i would need to do is know where on this i'm going to put my zero and i would mark out two and a quarter this way and two and a quarter that way and then i would have had that exactly centered instead of this way so it's something that you can do to get these centered and this makes just a great border just like that let me turn it this way so you can see it and you're just you just keep going back and forth or you can just use the outer one and keep going this direction but i kind of like doing this way because what happens is your inside one looks a little bit heavier so in other words you're going to start in the upper left or the upper right it doesn't matter but you're going to start if you're on the left in the left come back down and come to here move your template around the big one come down move to here move your template and you can do a whole border like that i think this is cool for a corner too so you can see how that would work in a corner what carol just said is that three of those in each corner would look really pretty right and so that's how i play with my templates now if i really truly and i could make this into a class where we do that i would work out the exact math where we would be able to turn this corner and have this one mitered just like that one and it would have to do with measuring here and then figuring out what other distance we need so it can be done that's a little bit more than a tuesday evening class is going to be but this gives you an idea of how you can play with your templates and what you can do with them so remember our mother's day special if you're looking for a table now is the time to do that and get signed up for saturday you may not even sew at all you may just watch but there's a lot of things that we will be sharing and you will learn from that many of you have been taking a lot of our classes and so some of this is becoming old hat and that's a great thing we want it so that you get it and you're like i've already heard that before so um those are the temp or those are the rules that you know not necessarily rules but that's the information that helps you become a better template quilter so any other comments or questions they would like to see the wish table before we go perfect so for that i'm going to go ahead and take the camera off its stand so i can move it so while she's doing that i'm going to go ahead and take off the glider and this glider the green grit grid glider is a clean you can see that it's really clingy and it has a back that i will be putting on it before i store it and since my back is not right here i'm just going to take it and lay it upside down behind my table here so i'm going to move some things out from under because i want you to be able to see the full concept of the table i keep my bobbins for my machine right underneath there so that they're handy and this is the nice big blue drawer that goes in the table and so that blue drawer stores a lot of things so what we have in here now is i have my feet the foot that i was using a while ago i can put that right there i have other plates for my machine because this machine has several plates that go with it i have my accu feed foot here that goes with that and then in here is a part that comes with this table and this is called oops the circle sewing tool and so what this does is if i wanted to sew a circle i would pull this out and wherever i put this this is the center of my circle and so i would put my fabric there and it would allow me to sew a circle and i'm going to reach her that blue piece right there megan this one no the above that blue there you go this is a sample of circle sewing right here and so when i was sewing this particular circle i had it in a lot closer than that and the center was right here and so then when i had my regular foot on this was just going around in that circle and i stitched a straight stitch first cut off the outer edge and then went back and did a decorative stitch so you can see over here i'll put it so you can see up close you can see the decorative stitches that are on there and this tool only fits the wish table that's correct the wish table and the giant wish are the ones that come with this the the holes in it now there is what's called the large deluxe and the large deluxe is a smaller table without the nice big drawer but it does have that those holes cut into it but you would need to purchase this extra because it does not come with this piece right here and so you've got the holes you can put this anywhere i've done circles up to 18 inches before so or actually 18 inches um radius so this the circle is actually 36 inches so again for all you math people right so i have in the university on so studies website there is a circle sewing class there where we actually do several different projects and there are patterns and things that you can do because there's so much versatility with this circle sewing and i will tell you if you're in doubt go ahead and get the wish table and then down the road when i do a circle sewing class you will see why because i've had so many people tell me i went ahead and just bought the large table and now i wish i had the wish table and so that's my little joke it's like if you don't get the wish table you'll wish you had but this little piece when i store it i store it right back on this piece of corrugated cardboard because i don't want those two little pieces to get bent but the wish table is 22 and a half by 25 and a half all of the edges are beveled and then you can see how it's custom cut it actually goes clear back to here it goes clear back to that area so that's how big it is and right there you can see aj she's turned our back on us or her back on us but she's getting as close as she can for us so i hope you have enjoyed today learning a little bit more about templates in general but obviously the templates that we use for the project and you can make something like this you you don't have to bring this up two inches or three inches you could bring it up to and have more full back you can see that you can see your design down there in the inside of it so thanks for joining me today i hope you'll be back tomorrow because guess what i'm going to show you how to use the weightless quilter and the weightless quilter is the way that you can easily quilt even up to a king size quilt so we'll see you again tomorrow at 2 p.m pacific time or 5 p.m eastern time thanks for joining us i'm donnell mcadams with my daughter megan we really enjoy bringing these to you bye for now
